Pizza
Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.
Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.
Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

I'll start off by saying that I'm originally from NY. They should rename this place Long Island Pizza Department, since it was reminiscent of every mediocre Nassau/Suffolk pizza joint I've eaten at. New Yorkers know the drastic taste difference between places there and places actually in NYC. But a native southerner wouldn't be able to tell, so i suppose they've got a chance. I ordered the Napolitan and Captain Cheesy. Both were soggy and pretty loaded with oil. The cheeses had a strange chewy texture, and the sauce was just ok. I'm not going to complain about the service because that was fine. I left with a mild feeling of shame and regret, much like being arrested as a teen. Lupi's downtown will remain my default pizza restaurant for a less greasy, less pricey slice.

My family always enjoys eating here; it's one of our favorite places to eat together. The pizza is amazing! The prices are reasonable, and the staff is friendly.

I liked the variety and the atmosphere, but the pizza was just ok. Oddly, instead of being soggy like others have reported, my slices were completely stiff and felt like I was eating cardboard. NY style pizzas should be somewhat floppy and fold-able, their pizza was neither. Nice for a change, but average at best.

I can't believe how many bad reviews there are :/ I love this pizza, I always get cheese and honestly it was very soggy like the other reviewers have stated. The only thing I do not like is the long wait for a pizza pie. Otherwise, great pizza :)

I'll start by saying I really wanted to like this place. What could be better than New York style pizza? I met my friends here for dinner... five of us. We had to pull some tables together... the dining area inside is not very big, so groups much larger than eight might have trouble finding a place to sit together. The people behind the counter were not that friendly. I didn't even get a hello when I walked up to the counter. I just placed my order and moved on down the line to pay. It was pretty pricey too... Most expensive couple of slices of pizza and a coke I had ever bought.... even airport pizza is less expensive. The pizza was okay, the slices are massive, but forgive me when I say that they are soggy. You can expect big slices of pizza to not be soggy. I've seen it done... in both New York and Atlanta, Georgia. Which reminds me, I should review that place in Atlanta where they do big pizza slices right. What saved this from a complete disaster is that the topping combinations are interesting and I did get some enjoyment out of the slices once I got past the soggy middle. Would I eat here again? Eh... maybe if my friends are meeting here... but I'm not going to stop in here by myself.

I had high hopes! It really is hard to get a good pizza in the suburbs of Chattanooga. This...I now realize...is a chain. I had a romantic hope a couple of the "boys" from back home actually came here to enlighten and offer us the real deal. Like my friend Mary has told me, "Tennessee doesn't do pizza. Get over it." ... to translate ... fugedaboutit. Now that I have said this, understand that this is a passable pie.. There is much worse and not much better around here. Crust: Disappointing. Flavor factor: Okay. Ingredients are a decent quality. Oily? a little. The decor is tacky (goes with the theme of NYPD) but cute. There is a small dine-in area and it was packed at 5 pm on a Friday night. I think they will do just fine here. There is very little competition. I am too critical because I am overly homesick for NY/NJ pizza. Also, I could have grabbed a couple of steaks to throw on the grill and a bottle of Chianti for the same price of a large pie.

I live in the area and am all about supporting local businesses. However, though this establishment has the potential to be charming the counter service was just bad. That was the 1st thing I experienced and service is important to me other wise I'd just cook at home. Ok, the pizza was soggy and they got our order wrong too...like forgot the slice of pepperoni pizza I ordered for my kid. Yikes. I will give them another chance as they have only been open a short period of time. I prefer lupi's and their helpful, kind waitstaff and great pizza.

After a lackluster first try, Kurt invited us back for a second chance. We were blown away from the moment we walked in. The place was PACKED which is a really good sign --especially for a small pizza joint in the Hixson area. We ordered our family favorite, a standard pie with onions, pepperoni, and sausage. Even with the huge amount of customers, the wait for our freshly baked pizza was no more than 15 minutes. This is a HUGE pizza, folks. Don't bat an eyelash at the prices --when you see the size of this thing, you'll know you're getting a good value. Furthermore, I think they got as close to hitting the nail on the head as you possibly can outside of NYC. And yes, I've had NYC pizza in at least 3 out of the 5 boroughs. While I suppose they could import the water and charge everyone $75 per pizza, this is the next best thing. It's definitely unique for Chattanooga and it beats any of the other big two in town without any challenge at all. Most importantly, customer service was CLEARLY in focus tonight. EVERYONE, from the bakers, to the dining room staff, to the cashier were genuinely concerned about everyone's experience --no small feat when it's almost standing room only. Kurt made us feel welcome and his staff let us know they shared his commitment to hospitality. NYPD has gained customers for as long as they stick around!

Visiting a friend in town and her parents wanted to order pizza for dinner tonight. Pizza on a Friday night is quite a gamble, but I went along with it. We got a Convict Concoction, carryout. It was AMAZING. The crust was crispy and tender. The meats and cheeses were delicious. Best pizza I've had outside of NYC and Chicago.
(5)Brandi N.
I am a huge fan of New York style pizza, so I might be a little biased when I say this is hands down the best pizza in the Chattanooga area. Be warned when I say these pizzas are HUGE. But I can't complain, just one pizza will feed my boyfriend and I for a couple of meals. I saw some of the other reviewers were saying they couldn't fold their slices or that they were soggy - these are problems I've never encountered here. My slices always fold and are never soggy or cardboard-like. The atmosphere isn't the most glamorous, but who cares? It's not terrible, the pizza's great, and they offer shakers of parmesan, oregano, and garlic powder. What more could you want?

Thanks to my husband's military career, we have lived a lot of places. Each time we move, we go searching for our new favorite pizza joint. I have to say, hands down, NYPD is it in this area. In fact, I think it bumped a couple of the others from some really big cities we have lived in off our top fav list, too. This pizza is nothing like any chain pizza joint you may be used to. That is fast food. This is real food. I love all the combinations that they have out every day for by the slice ordering in house. Our family is super picky and hard to please with one meat eater, who refuses veggies, two vegetarians, one of whom oddly refuses most veggies as well, and a couple of kids who just like pepperoni. We all find something we love here. Whole pies are awesome, too. We recently did a very large order for our massive Girl Scout troop after I realized that with the size of the pies, I would spend just as much ordering from one of the big chains as I would with them, and I would much prefer to give all my girls the real deal. Just as good as their pizza, though, is their devotion to the community. For that alone, they would get a bump in extra star credit if I had any left to give. This is one of those places that you truly feel good supporting, because you know they are going to support our community right back. Love the pizza and the place.

Pizza rust was thin and crispy. Huge salads. Really enjoyed the food and decorations. Very busy and will definitely need more seating as word gets out.
(5)Bill P.
Soggy, overpriced. But the taste was good. Better than Papa Murphy's next door at least. Ann says it is a chain. Where are the other locations?

When I get done with my 2 mile long swim at the Y what I crave is 3 FDR rolls and a slice of pizza. I don't really care which pizza, as long as it is vegetarian, so my wife picks. I do like plain cheese though. I drink 75% unsweetened tea and 25% sweet tea. The tea and the sodas are consistently the best here out of all of the places we go out to eat. I am thankful for New York Pizza Department and have eaten so many good meals here. It is a part of my wife and I's life. This is good pizza. Great fettuccine. Great and different than Lupis Calzones. Great salads. Great variety. And an ever expanding menu at times which you will not get at a chain. Sure. There are details about it that some people will not like. On average though what do people think about it? Quick. Shut this site down. This site would like to say 3.5 is what people think about it on average. Is this true? If you expand the reviews and count the ratings not counted in the average, as yelp is protecting you from reading fake reviews (is facebook, tripadvisor, and urbanspoon really full of fake reviews?) And if so well it is still a comparison on the same scale with every other restaurant. The reviews here on yelp are as follows: 22 that are 5 stars 7 that are 4 stars 3 that are 3 stars 6 that are 2 stars 3 that are 1 star Is wait for it. Not 3.5. 3.95 22 x 5, + 7 x 4, + 3 x 3, + 6 x 2, + 3 x 1 = 162 Divided by 41 as that is how many people took their time to come on to Yelp and write a review. Does not everyone's time and opinion matter? We know the deal by now. I mean the people that look at your site do too. Customers know. I am one. I am not related to this place in any other way. The 3.95 is much lower than tripadvisor or urbanspoon. Which brings me to the next point. Out of the 3 star or less reviews. 5 of 41 are from heavy users of yelp that do not live here in Chattanooga. You draw your own conclusions. Some quick research will reveal a 92% listed on one website. Maybe urbanspoon for the 92%. The 4.7 average on Facebook. And the 4.5 ish average of tripadvisor. Yeah sure. Nypd didn't subscribe to yelp's extended services. I wouldn't either. Oh well. People do not like to be lied to. I am sure your own policy is dooming you as people actually trust urbanspoon and tripadvisor more. I do think your motivation is financial and I do wonder if perhaps it is illegal. When people cannot trust that their positive reviews will be shown, or will not be removed for failing to meet yelp's guidelines, they do not write them here on yelp. Which is another reason you have a 3.95 average here. If I were Yelp I would begin to ask myself how come I had 42 reviews of this restaurant while Urbanspoon has 77. My recommendation to Yelp is: Don't change at all. I am enjoying seeing you lose. But hopefully one day someone rectifies the unfairness and injustice and dishonesty going on here on Yelp, and exposes the parts of this operation that pretends to care about users' trust and instead just serves the hidden interests of the Yelp company. Look at your stats compared to urbanspoon and tripadvisor. You are losing. 70 for Yelp's stock price. Headed higher? 101 for tripadvisor. What do you think a site that isn't in the habit of sneakily filtering out peoples' content such as Urbanspoon is worth? Do you think Facebook got to be Facebook while acting the way that you have? Do you really think you will be successful in the long run with your current approach? I don't.

Decent pizza place but nothing extraordinary. You walk up to order your pizza (they have slices available as well), then wait for them to call your name. We didn't have a server bring our pizza over so I walked up and picked it up when it was ready. Service was decent but nothing to add too much commentary about. It seemed to take a while for our order which was a basic 14 inch pepperoni. When it came out is was misshaped, they noted that it got stuck or something. I wouldn't drive out of my way to dine here again but I would eat here if I was in the area. It's worth at least checking out.

Great pizza but really retarded hours. For an idea that comes from New York it would be nice if they mimicked the hours also. Pizza is needed most after 10pm!
(3)Andrew H.
Only been one time and it was excellent. The pizza is some of the best in Chatt area and the service was great. Can't wait to go again

This was the first time my mother and I tried NYPD. Was curious after reading the reviews. Customer service was fantastic, the restaurant was clean and I loved the NY "vibe" it had going on. Not to mention the pizza! We ordered a 24in (HUGE) Supreme and it was DELISH! Needless to say, can't wait to try the other pizza selections! BTW-The ladies' restroom must get a notable mention as well! Very boutique-like!!!! Loved it!
(5)David W.
Great burger at a pizza joint! Wife is trying the Philly cheese steak made just the way they do in downtown Philly, can't beat this place
(4)Dave J.
Bad day at New York pizza today... order the slice of pizza, was kept waiting twice as long as normal.... Found out that they have lost my original slice, was given a really horrible substitute slice.... All without asking me before they presented my slice... Too bad I kind a like this place
(1)Erica M.
I just recently moved here from NY, so I am a little hard to please when it comes to pizza. First off - the decor of this place is awesome! Even the bathrooms! yes... the bathrooms! Pizza wise: I was super excited when the pizza was just as great as the decor! The sizes are classic NY slices - LARGE! The garlic knots are good and the mushroom soup is AMAZING! The only reason why I am not giving this place 5 stars is for inconsistency. My husband and I have been there 4 times so far and 2 times it was amazing and another 2 times it was good... but not as good as before. Maybe it was the pizza maker - not sure.
(4)Tony B.
Slices are huge. Never had a soggy piece. Weve been here as a family of 4 and a birthday party of 12. Service an quality has never let us down. Keep up the good work guys! And by the way Im from NY so I do know good pizza. Thus place is the BEST around..
(5)Shane K.
Although I mean to, I don't write reviews as much as I want to, but I feel compelled to share my experience here. The pizza is GREAT, but that isn't why I would come back. I wish I could relay in words how amazing the staff is. First, I walk in with my 3 year old daughter who was making it clear she wanted cheese pizza. The gentleman behind the counter moved another pizza out of the way to show her the cheese. When we pick it up he shows her the pizza to make sure it is okay. Then helps us out to the car (I couldn't hold the pizza and baby myself) The service is amazing, the food is better

This...is not...a chain. It just has an unoriginal name. I don't know what anyone expects the middle of a massive 24" pizza to be other than soggy. If you don't want that, then this is not the place to go, except for probably a slice that gets heated back up. But really, meh, pizza that's just been sitting there. If sogginess is such a problem for you, the menu does say you can get anything as a take and bake pizza if you think you can do better. All the specialty pizzas cost over $18-25, but they feed 6+ people easily. There were 5 of us and we ate 6 of the 8 slices. To me, that's not really overpriced, considering in the end it'll be 7 meals overall. I wouldn't bother with a whole pizza here if it wasn't for that many people. They do also offer plain cheese for $15, but if you want more than one topping you kind of enter better off with a specialty one territory. We ordered the 911, which had salami, pepperoni, bacon, ground beef, green peppers, onion, black olives, and mushroom..I think that covers everything. It was way too much stuff for one pizza, which is a positive for any dogs around. Overall the pizza wasn't that bad, but it's hard to make pizza taste terrible. A lot of the pizzas sound really interesting, so I'd like to come back and try a couple more in the future just because it's something different around here and better than the pizza my parents usually pick when I'm back up here. They also have sandwiches, calzones, and salads. edit: whoever put the address in completely missed a number. This is up across from the 153 Wal-Mart, not all the way down by the river. I submitted a change to Yelp but yeah don't go looking for it based on the map on here.

We have been to NYPD a few times. the first two times the pizza was very good at least 3 or 4 stars. The last time we went the pizza was bland with a very soggy crust. It may have been a bad day, or they might not be able to handle the new larger restaurant.
(3)Stacey T.
This is my son's favorite place to eat so we go there often. The pizza is consistently great! They have all the traditional pizzas as well as some very unique combinations. I haven't had a slice I didn't like. The whole pizzas are enormous so it's a great place to have a party or for large families on a budget. The menu has expanded as well as the actual restaurant which is a huge improvement due to their high volumes of customers. When I am craving pizza, NY Pizza Dept is the first place that comes to mind, out of all the great pizza places in town. I definitely recommend trying it out!
(4)Shawanda M.
I'm not from New York but I've had authentic NYC pizza while visiting New York on multiple occasions. Regardless of if you think it's really traditional/authentic pizza, this place is legit. The staff is really helpful and super-attentive (at least in the two occasions that I've visited they were). Insider tip: the last time I visited we were told that there's a dude from Philly in the back making authentic Philly cheesesteaks. Now, I can't vouch for them since I hadn't tried them yet but I'm super-excited to go back and try it. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

We came from 2 hours away to attend a funeral service. We we asked about a pizza joint that came highly recommended, NYPD was top of the list. So we put it in the GPS and headed there. It was located in a small strip center on 153 directly across the street from Walmart and just south of the Olive Garden. From the outside, this looked like the real deal. Inside, it was the real deal. The glass display had at least a dozen different types of pizza by the slice (huge slices), bread knots (garlic knot equivalent) and of course whole pizzas made to order, calzones, stromboli, salad, and dessert. Get there at lunch time between 10:30-3:30 and you can have 2 cheese slices and a 20 oz. refillable Coke for $6.00. The pizza slices were heated in the oven, served at the window on paper plates (one slice per plate), and the soda fountain was located inside the dining area. We ordered 4 slices of pizza, 6 bread knots and $2 drinks for about $21. It was love at first sight, love at first bite, and hands down a place we will pilgrimage to when we're in the area. The pizza crust was perfectly baked, easy to fold in half, and the cheese and toppings were fresh and high quality. If you're used to eating LIttle Caesar's or fast food pizza, tasting this pizza will take your taste buds to a new level. It's mouthwatering and worth savoring every bite. Two large slices was ample per person. The staff was nice, checked us to see how we liked our first visit, and was happy to share their pizza story when I ventured over and asked all about them. CONS: Two hours from my house. PROS: Two hours from my house (makes it a special outing).
(5)Joyce T.
NYPD - YUM! Thin crust, seasoned sauce, and all the toppings you could imagine! One slice is lunch for most, teenage boys will probably want more! Always fresh, always friendly! Fortunately, they are located just up the road from me!! Worth the trip from anywhere!
(5)Karen H.
The whole freshly ordered pizzas are delicious. I don't know about the slices though. I'd order a whole pie instead. It was fantastic!
(4)Robert B.
I was disappointed in this place. I've had NY style pizza in Manhattan and also around the country. There are many good places for this style of pizza, but this place is not one of them. The reheated slices were still not hot. My wife's slice had a hair in it. I had the Philly cheesesteak which was mediocre. You can get better at Jersey Mike's. I wanted to like this place but I won't be back.
(2)Taylor B.
I had the most wonderful experience here while in vacation. The pizza was just as pleasing as the service from Aimee and a few others for helping me get to know the unfamiliar menu and making excellent recommendations. The 911 was a big hit , thanks guys!
(5)Jack D.
stopped by here thinking I would regret it. very surprised by excellent/helpful staff and delicious pizza. Will be back again!
