While visiting Tennessee, I stopped in here for lunch with a friend this past week. His parents recommended we try here and we were glad we did. I got a brisket sandwich with bull strings. I loved the sandwich and the bull strings were delicious! We shared fried pickles, which the portions were huge! They were super hot when they came out, so don't try to eat them too fast. My friend got the pork, sausage, corn on the cob and the loaded potato salad. The potato salad was a big hit. The waitress was super friendly and made our experience a pleasant one. I just wish there was some live music playing, but there weren't many people there for lunch, so I can understand why there may not have been. I also wish we sat outside, but it was really hot out so the air conditioning was much appreciated.

I wouldn't recommend this to my worst enemy. The loaded baked potato salad was horrible. The pork BBQ was disgusting and I found a bone. The mac & cheese was cold. The service was okay but the food was not worth the 18% gratuity.

NEVER again! I think Mickey Roo's has a new owner. The menu has changed completely- Prices went UP portions went DOWN. The decor has changed as well and looks pretty awful. Chairs were very uncomfortable. The food was less than superior quality- most items were either dry or greasy, and served on plates that remind you of a hospital cafeteria. We used to go here a lot, but we will never be back.

Never. Ever. Again. Food was meh. Environment was awful. 18% gratuity? For what? The beer we had that was sitting in kegs for how long?! Once again, never again.

Continuing our tour of BBQ in the Nashville area. This time, my bbq partner in yum and I decided to keep it local for us ie BBQ on our lunch break. Plus I had a coupon, and while I like my meat smoked to perfection, I also like the delicious taste of savings. Our standard order - pulled pork & ribs. BBQ buddy wanted to try the brisket too. After all, this place claims to be "real Texas" BBQ, which means brisket, baby. Thank God he added that to the order because these folks know brisket. The brisket was definitely my favorite meat. It wasn't caused so it wasn't wet. However, it wasn't dry either. It was a melt in your mouth good which tasted a lot like amazing beef jerky. Tasty, tasty. The pulled pork was pretty standard affair. Again, served before saucing, it was moist and smoky. Pretty good stuff, but it did need some sauce. The verdict is still out on the ribs. They were cooked just right - not fall of the bone, but not too dry, not too juicy. They weren't wet. They didn't have a dry rub. I think they were just smoked. The flavor of the meat was good, but I like a dry or wet rub. Something to add a bit zing. As far as atmosphere, this place is DARK inside. There's not much for natural lighting, which is a bit shocking for a midweek lunch. From previous experiences, I know they have live music often, which matches their full bar. That's not really my scene so I don't think I'll be going back at night unless it's to pick up a to-go order. The service was great. Normally servers seem a bit annoyed when you come in with a coupon, but our server didn't mind at all. She kept our Styrofoam cups and checked in often.I Fun note - on our way to the car, I noticed an old guy out back chopping wood. I know their food is smoked, but there was something reassuring about that. Overall, we had a great experience. Like I said, this place is close to our house so it might be a great quick dinner to-go spot for us.

Our dinner was terrible. My family used to go to Mickey Roo's all the time for the great Texas bbq. We found out it is under new management and we will definitely not be going back. We ordered cheese fries with brisket. The fries had a runny cheese sauce and the brisket was bland, boiled beef. We had cheeseburgers which were fine but nothing to write home about. We ordered coleslaw for a side which was bland and dry. I agree with the review that said the plates made you feel like you were in a cafeteria. We are sad to see that the quality had declined so much. Mickey Roo's used to be a Franklin staple.

Ordered pulled pork plate, $10 and have to say new owner has reduced quality. Bbq ok but not as good as before, quantity went way down. Beans tasted like Vancamps and potato salad was strange mix of something I cannot explain. Don't call it potato salad when it's not. Will not return. We stopped in for a drink about two weeks ago and one stall in woman's bathroom was out of order, again same stall was out of order in women's bathroom my wife said And had to wait for the bathroom this trip also, does it really take that long to fix bathroom. We ate at the bar and the owner came over and was talking to the party next to us and was talking about how he was growing his hair to give it to locks of love, that is a great thing to do but he needs to worry less about his hair and more about his shitters.

So called owner Ricky is very unprofessional and rude , he took a fun place and turned it into a morgue, I hear the food quality has diminished , avoid if you can

Texas BBQ in Tennessee. Yep. On my recent visit I had four meats and all meats were smoked well. This is a bar/restaurant and they feature live music. I left just as the music was kicking off. The Ribs were very good, moist, and meaty; smoked well and not overcooked! They did a very good job with the ribs. I love Sausage and their sausage was pretty good, excellent actually. The Pulled Pork was moist and tasty. I love the fact that it came without sauve. Oddly enough being a Texas BBQ joint the Brisket wasn't as good as the other meats. Baked beans and potato salad for sides. Very good. I'll return! 7/16/2013

After a very long work day.... Time to grub!

It's the real deal. The BBQ is amazing and so are the beans, slaw, potato salad! It's all so good! Usually they have good music too! It can get pretty bar-ish at night so beware of that if you are with your kids but it's such a fun place! The brisket is delicious! And I am from Texas so I should know!
(5)R O.
Hit the hot cakes as a side... Pure money.. Plus live music with some barbecue... What can you say.

I echo the other review regarding my two recent visits since ownership changed. Prices went up, service went down, and management is not responsive to customer's needs. My first visit after management changed was at dinner. Food was more expensive and greasy. I ordered Brisket Tacos, which I always ordered in the past-- and they had a small dab of guacamole with greasy brisket. I asked for some guacamole and was told I'd need to pay extra. Crazy! Today I returned for lunch- the management told us not to put two tables together because we wouldn't be able to hear one another and to sit at two separate tables. A few minutes later I understood why when at lunch, in a BBQ place, piano music was played- very loud- throughout all of lunch! We were charged a quarter for water and my friend's water had a bug in it and they still charged a quarter!! Our orders were messed up. They charged $0.75 extra for guacamole as a side even though it doesn't say it on the menu. The food again was greasy and staff seemed frustrated that we asked for things like: a new water without bugs, silverware, our correct order, or a refill. Won't return again!

NEVER AGAIN! A large group of us were there at around 5:00 to celebrate a birthday. I think the sound system has one volume, BLOW-YOUR-EARDRUMS-OUT-TOO-LOUD! We couldn't hear each other talk, & supposedly the band didn't start until 8:00. I asked the bartender if there was any way to get the sound turned down, she pointed at the owner & she went & asked him...she came back to me & said, "He said no." REALLY????? Who does that? Our group wrapped up our drinks, paid, & left. As we left, I saw two other tables of people holding their hands over their ears. I'm not some old fart who doesn't like loud music, I just don't like it when we're trying to talk & eat. And I don't like leaving dinner w/tinnitus in my ears.

I feel like this place has somewhat of an identity crisis. Inside it was very inviting and typical "BBQ joint" decor. Outside seemed geared more towards a bar type scene, lots of drinking and cigarette smoking occurring in that area. They offered live music while I was there and it seems to be a nightly occurrence. The food was okay. I had the brisket plate with cole slaw and the regular baked beans. Great portion sizes but some parts lacked flavor. I enjoyed the "chunky" style of cole slaw but it lacked in taste and sauce. I felt like I was just eating big chunks of cabbage for the most part. The beans were pretty good and the brisket was smokey with a good flavor. Service seemed to be the biggest downside, I only saw two servers and one bartender while I was there. Our server seemed to have tables at every end of the place, even outside. She was nice enough but a little scatter brained when it came to checking in on us. One thing I did enjoy is that it seems the owner is regularly in the business and checks in with patrons. A personal connection between business owners and their customers is an often missing factor in the food industry and it is a big plus for my possible return to the restaurant.

Had The brisket cowboy sandwich and it was mouth watering. Zach our waiter was very kind and attentive to detail. Kudos to you bud excellent service.

We were hesitant, being Tennessee BBQ lovers. This is a Texas BBQ place, but the pulled pork is quite good. We had the BBQ beans and potato salad as sides--also good. The only negative is the atmosphere. It seemed a little on the not so clean side. Very friendly service. We might try again .
(3)Jack B.
Best Texas BBQ near Nashville by far! Great environment and since new ownership 3 weeks ago, service improved and the brisket is ridiculous! I've had Texas BBQ in Austin and this is just as good. Highly recommended.
(5)Joy S.
The brisket quesadillas and the sin dip are both favorites. Great spot to take the kids for a quick, albeit unhealthy, meal!

I recently had dinner and drinks at Mickey Roos with a large party of friends after a local event in Franklin. I had the brisket tacos which were fantastic and my husband ordere the pulled pork and ribs which were off the chain. I had never been there before, but will definitely be back!!!

Awful!!
(1)Phil B.
We really like this place and you will too if you like Texas barbeque. I'm more of a Kansas City barbeque guy myself, but this is really good. The service is good as well. The Texas tacos are worth the trip.
(4)Steve S.
Been here a few times. Great BBQ and fast service. Sit anywhere. Live music on weekends. I've always gone in during lunch so not sure what atmosphere is like during busy hours but def. like to pop in when I'm in town.

Saved the best for last... was it the brisket? nope! the rib? Nope! It was the good live music on stage! Too bad there wasn't much of a crowd to enjoy it!. Other than that, I didn't find much else impressive here.. Let's start with the food: I should've been leery with the fact that my food came less than 5 minutes after ordering.. I'm almost convinced some (if not all) of it was nuked in the microwave... (It must've been a huge microwave though, since my plate was monstrous)! The next table also had the quick serving. Unfortunately, the brisket was mostly dry and bland. Lacking flavor (and smoke rings), applying sauce was my only remedy for this meat. My verdict: 2 out of 5. Fried Okra, bull strings (aka onion rings), chicken wings, bbq sauce all mediocre (2/5). Ribs were marginally better 3/5. (Although some of it was moist and fell off the bone, other pieces stuck like chuck till you used your teeth to grind the muck.) This joint's saving grace (from an overall 2-star rating) was the pig, as I happily scarfed-down the pork sausage (4/5). oink! Thought process: I couldn't decide what to order, and since this was my first time eating in Tennesee, I wanted to sample everything.. so I got the $30 "Sampler" ... As soon as it arrived, I knew this was a big challenge - it could easily feed 4 adults. But like Kobayashi's apprentice, I wolfed down half of it myself.. Ahh, the stupid stuff guys would do to impress a decent looking waitress! (and there were a couple of them here on a Monday night) In the end, I admitted defeat.. as I struggled with the pain of a stuffed gut, I came to my senses and realized this waitress's challenge wasn't worth jeopardizing my health. Alas, I let the flies finish-off the meal (I was tired fighting them, and at least they appreciate the food better than I could!) If you're looking for a lightning fast BBQ fix, or find it fun to shadow-box with winged insects over your plate, I would totally endorse this place! Otherwise, spin the wheel (or GPS) and try your luck elsewhere.

Dam good Brisket

i have always enjoyed the show and the food here----love the environment and each time we have seen performers here they always come out and chat with you on break---which is really cool---you better get there early to eat though because the first time we tried to go there for a late supper and entertainment we only got to hear a couple songs and the band packed up an the kitchen was closing--so it is not late night place-----my children are all grown up now so when i go out I like to go places that don't have young families and little kids----but this place is a wonderful place to take a family to and the kids like getting up dancing along to the live music---i would recommend the ribs and the beans...delish! If you ever see lee gibson or erikya nash on the marquee well worth trying to go

Great deal!

Not bad, not great, just okay. The decor was cool, felt like the BBQ places in TX I've been to. Great beer specials during happy hour. I has the pork and sausage. A little dry and nothing special. My wife loved her brisket tacos. My potato salad was bland and the onion rings were actually onion straws. Overall, a good little place to grab a Shiner and BBQ sandwich, but not a must try place for BBQ lovers.
(3)Randall F.
Love Love Love Micky Roos! Not being from TN it is hard to find TX style BBQ that is worth eating... Micky Roos is fantastic. Definitely try the brisket and bull strings.
(4)Elliott W.
Mickey Roos is a solid passable score. If they were more consistent in quality I'd give them more. Any day of the week Roos is better than Strouds, Whitt's, etc. there is a big pit out back, smoking with actual wood. On a good day, they stand out against anything in middle TN, but they don't seem to cook fresh every day, so you might get some dried out or overcooked leftovers. The onion rings are pretty much my favorite anywhere and practically worth the trip on their own.. Roos' other sides are good, but don't stand out.
(3)Otis R.
Best barbecue east of the Mississippi. Get some good texas style brisket here. During happy hour they have $1.50 Shiner drafts. Usually some live music as well. Should also say that the cheese fries are excellent as well
(5)Leah W.
If you love a bar type of place then this is perfect for you. It's not my ideal hang but it's close to the soccer field so we go there after games & practice. The food is pretty good & they have clean bathrooms. It's an ok place for kids.I've only seen one bar fight there so far....

I visit Mickey Roos for dinner frequently. I love their food! I have tried everything on their menu except three things (Their salad, chicken fingers, and chili). Their ribs are fall off the bone delicious! I get their wings and cheese fries frequently. (get the cheese fries on a plate, if you don't it comes in a basket and the cheese and paper stick together). The wings are not the normal wings at some other places I have visited. They are larger here. The brisket is moist and perfect. I like the brisket quesadillas! They have a sandwich called the Texas Heart Attack. One night I had tried so many things I couldn't decide what I wanted so I asked them to just bring me something and I will try it. Well, that was the sandwich, and luckily I am still alive to tell the story! It was definitely as it is named. Brisket, sausage, and pork all on one sandwich! It was great but ask your doctor if a sandwich like this is right for you! :) If you like queso dip, they put brisket in the dip! Very good! I could list their whole menu but I can tell you I would eat everything on their menu again! I cannot say that for many restaurants! Before I came here, I was not a big barbecue fan. They do it right! Now for the staff and owners. The reason I go back so much is because the staff and guests are all friendly, and I know most of the people who go there now. Mickey and Kala come by and say hello every time I am there. All of the servers are just wonderful, and they all come by to say hello too! This is a family restaurant. There are "well behaved" kids everywhere, and families enjoying themselves. There is a live band playing there every night, and also live karaoke is a blast to watch on Wednesday nights. See you there!

I walked in about 5:30 and almost all the tables are empty. Bar is full. Sign says seat yourself. Every table had a sign on it saying RESERVED. I go back up front to ask if there was any place that wasnt reserved so I could get dinner and couldnt get anyones attention. I tried to flag down a server a couple of times and even though she saw me she ignored me. They were setting up for the band and the tables were reserved for the bar crowd they expected for the show. They are more a bar than restaraunt I guess. They really should have someone at the door to help people.
(1)Greg S.
Texas themed. Large portions from the 24 oz sodas to the piled high plates. Lunch Saturday was fairly empty. Ribs are excellent, brisket and chicken are ok to good. Kids prortions will feed an adult. Service was reasonabe, prices are on the steep side. Lunch for 2 adults and 2 kids (no booze, apps, desert or full racks) was north of $50 with tip.

I could do better "BBQ" in oven. My wife, kids and I stopped there on the way through town on Fathers day for lunch. We were returning from vacation, and I was in the mood for a good bbq brisket for lunch. The google searches indicated this place would be worth a try. WRONG! Everything we had there was mediocre at best. The brisket tasted more like crock pot - pot roast than bbq. The chicken was so dry it was hard to swallow, as were the ribs. I really think we were served the leftovers from the prior week - but the waitress did not return after she dropped our food of, so I couldn't voice my concerns. The sides wee not fresh - beans from a can and slaw that had absolutely no flavor. I have had BBQ all over the country - good and bad, and this was by far the worst I have experienced. Among the worst food I have been served in a restaurant.
(1)Phil T.
Went here on Sunday night. They were out of our first 3 beer choices. The ones we got were good and cold. Had a variety of items, sampler platter was very large and everything on it was good but ribs almost too smokey for my taste. Bologna sandwich, excellent. Chicken dinner was good and all of our sides were nice. The spicy beans were not very spicy, I expected more. Fried pickles best of trip to Nashville so far. Football game was on, sound was playing. Decor was country cowboy. Steer head on the wall.
(3)Mr. F.
Maybe it was an off night. The ribs were dry. The brisket was burnt, and dry. The chicken? Dry. The onion rings were excellent, as was the service.
(3)Joe F.
Can't say enough about the food! They give out plastic forks and that's all you need! Fall off the bone goodness! The Texas Trio did me in perfectly. Simply awesome! Shiner Bock and Fat Tire on draft, too! Jenna was a great and informative waitress!
(5)Joe S.
Working my way around TN on a quest to find the best BBQ. Had the sample plate with brisket, pork, coleslaw and beans. The meat was very good and had a nice char with decent smoke rings. As far as the coleslaw, it had no distinct flavor, almost like a storebought slaw, very dissapointed (I love good slaw) and the beans tasted EXACTLY like Hormel chili with some jalepenos inside. The meat gets four and a half stars, the sides get 2 stars, sauce was decent.
