I have eaten here many times, started with the Hot chicken and have since moved onto the hot catfish. I like the Cry Baby level hot, anything hotter hurts the next day. Everything I have eaten has been great, so why 4 stars and not 5? Simple no beer. Because of this I order to go (online ordering) Favorite side is the white beans. The fries are well fryed too. One day I will try the shrimp burger!

Good Food , but be prepared to wait and poor customer service. They need better customer service and a way to handle pick up orders. I called 30 minutes ahead and still had to wait. After waiting 20 minutes I asked how much longer and was told they gave my order away to someone else. I had to wait another 25 minutes to prepare the order again. After calling ahead 30 minutes and waiting an additional 45 do you think they offered anything for my trouble and time? NOPE.... They have awesome food but I have to be prepared to deal with incompetency.

My favorite hot chicken place. So glad we finally got one in Franklin! I've been to all of the hot chicken places in Nashville, and this one is MY favorite because the medium hear doesn't make my mouth fall off. My brother is a hot chicken enthusiast and when we eat together, we always come to Big Shake's because he can get the high heat to satisfy his taste and I can get medium and still enjoy my food! Love the owners as well!!

The chicken here is very good. I've tried both of the hotter sauces. The cry baby is the best to me, it's just hot enough but not overboard. Both the chicken pieces and tenders are great. I'd go somewhere else for fish, but it's still pretty good too. Most recently I got some potato salad there that was really disappointing. The potatoes were crunchy and it had no flavor. Just to reiterate, the chicken is really really good.. go for that. This place has minimal parking. Especially if you go during lunch.

My first experience eating "Hot Chicken" was excellent!!! I loved it. The portions are huge and I could hardly finish my "cry-baby" leg & thigh. I don't know where the pickle idea comes in but it was a great addition. The chicken was hot enough to make my nose run & eyes water so I will definitely be back!!!

I was looking for hot chicken where I didn't have to drive to Nashville. So glad I found this place. Not being from Nashville I have been told many times about hot chicken. I went to Hatti B's and remember liking it but after having Big Shakes I wouldn't go back there. I waited to review till I had been here many times and it has been consistent. I took my family here when they visited they all loved it. Talked about how moist and tender the chicken was. I always get cry baby and its not to hot I want to try the hottest but haven't yet. The vibe is nice as well, nice staff, sometimes a local singer performs. It is small so be prepared to wait or call ahead.

Found this place through Groupon and have been back 4 times since. I'm afraid I will never try the shrimp burgers because I like the hot chicken so much. I go for the "stop, drop n roll" - not as spicy as other hot chicken I've had, but the flavor is great! The sides are amazing! Best white beans, greens, and cole slaw I have ever had. The deep fried Oreos are amazing, especially if you get a glass of milk to go with them! They just added a couple if outdoor tables.

Was fantastic.. the Cry Baby was similar to Hattie B's medium (can't remember what they call it) but tasted "fresher" somehow. Guy who waited on us was very friendly. Don't live too fay away, so we'll definitely be back (just not when their small store-front is super-packed like it definitely is most days from 12-1.)

It's no frills inside, but the food is classic comfort food. Can be slammed at the lunch hour, they do take phone orders. I would return to Big Shake's.

Very good hot chicken! Food was hot and fresh. Sides were just as good as the main course. Will absolutely be back. (Have been there at least 5 times in last month). Can't get enough of their delicious chicken. The cry baby has great flavor! Perfect amount of heat!!! Terrific!!! Would easily get, and deserve, 5 stars if they had better service. They are really slow getting you through the ordering process. Also, my most recent order for the office was totally messed up. Ordered chicken quarters and got chicken tenders. Even so, the food is sooooooo good it is easy to over look the service issues. Could be they are still a little new and getting kinks worked out. Their food is terrific! Worth going anytime.... Highly recommend going Big Shakes for a good Nashville Style Hot Chicken Meal!!! My friend, from out of town, got the shrimp burger and said it was truly amazing! Two weeks later and he still talks about wanting to go back next time in Franklin.

Another great experience at Big Shakes Hot Chicken. Stop, drop, and roll chicken with jalapeno mayo and dill pickles was over the top delicious. Greens were tasty. Another home run.

Picked up lunch to go yesterday, the post church crowd had the place slammed. Chicken was excellent, got medium heat and was very tasty, crunchy and cooked perfectly. Fries and Cole slaw were a nice accompaniment. Would put it behind princes but ahead of Hattie B's.

Very, very good. Good food, clean place, Very nice employees. Just proves you don't have to be treated rude to get great hot chicken in Nashville. The greens and white beans are worth the trip itself. Love it!!

The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is the lack of parking. This was my 3rd visit and I wasn't disappointed. We got 3 fried whiting platters to go. Came out quicker than usual and was perfectly fried and seasoned again. Huge portions and always friendly service! Got there at 5:45 and by the time I ordered our meals, it was filling up fast!

First visit to Big Shake's today. I do like heat, so got the "stop, drop & roll" level of heat on my chicken tenders = perfect! Seasoned fries and slaw were also good. Service was friendly and faster than some of the other hot chicken joints in the Nashville area. I lucked into a parking spot and empty table inside - it's a small place! I will be back to try the fish!

Just found the best hot chicken in Franklin. The food was great. I tried the cry baby which is the second level of hot. Which I really enjoyed however next time I will try the third level which is stop, drop and roll. The collard greens were really good and seasoned well. I was disappointed the mac and cheese is only on Mondays. Just gives me another reason to go back and visit. The staff was nice. They even had live music. Chef Big Shake came out to bust some moves. Our meal came with deep fried oreos which I never had. They are scrumptious. I give this hot place 5 stars.

This chicken is delicious and addicting! Perfectly crunchy on the outside and tender/juicy on the inside. I had the cry baby sauce on my chicken. While I could do much spicier, it did have some nice build over time...especially when I added the habanero mayo! Yum!! I think I will go for the stop drop and roll sauce next time. I also love that it is a nice family owned place. It doesn't do "fast food" so you may have to wait...but it's worth it!!

Been wanting to try this place out since I saw Big Shake on the tv show "Shark Tank" pitching his shrimp burgers. To make a long story short I was in the westside of Franklin & was hungry. I decided to call in my order for take out ahead of time since it was friday & figured they would be busty. That was an understatement. I walked in & the place is the size of my bedroom @ home. I was jammed packed in their with 20 other people waiting for their food. I paid and said wheres my food. They said "oh were backed up because of large orders". I was a little anxious considering they said it would be ready for pickup in 15 mins. I ended up waiting another 15 mins inside this whole in a wall & had to grab a glass of water to cool me down. One because it was like a sauna in there between the body heat of 20 people & the heat coming out the kitchen. Finally I get my food. I ordered the southwest shrimp burger with 2 sides. Boy was it good! It was spicy delicious. The sides added to this stellar sandwich. Despite my rant of waiting the food is GREAT! The people are friendly & did I mention I ran into a famous country singer? 4 of 5 stars because of the wait. I have no idea why Big Shake decided to open this hole in the wall off the beaten. Nevertheless I will be going back with a friend. I could eat Big Shakes shrimp burger again & again. Bravo Big Shake :)

Good food, especially if you're in the mood for something out of the ordinary. However, not worth the hour wait. We'll give it another shot after they (presumably) get their operations under control.

Over all, the food was pretty good. They had really good fries and so was the hot chicken, but there were a few flaws. For example, the chicken wasn't that hot but that depends on the spice you can take, also, there was skin still on the fish. All in all, it was quite good. I hope to again soon!

This place is truly a Gem! The food was by far the best. Not only was our meal fresh, and served pipping. The portions are large and the staff was Fantastic. Normally, I am not a fan out Hot and Spicy food but I decided to live on the edge and go for broke and try the "Cry Baby" Chicken tenders. Well. I must say that it truly brought tears to my eyes and i was so thankful that the staff was attentive and constantly offering refills for my beverage. This was only my 3rd visit to Franklin, Tn. but thanks to BIg Shake's Hot Chicken and Fish, I will make sure that whenever I am in town they will be my 1st stop.

I was very excited when I heard that Franklin was getting a hot chicken joint! The location as well as the building lend some credibility to the term joint and the chicken and fish were cooked as well as any that I've had in Nashville. My problem is with the spice, which I assume is playing to the Franklin market. I go to hot chicken places to get that special lard and cayenne concoction that no other area can seem to get right. Overall the meal was really good but not the "Nashville" hot chicken that I was hoping for. The hottest spice they have is what a normal order would be at Hattie's, the fish was akin to a mild order at Bolton's. It was good food from good people and i'll be back but i'll eat "Nashville Hot Chicken" in Nashville.

I have visited Big Shakes 3 times. My first visit was on their grand opening night and they were slammed. The service was slow, even for a call in order. The food was fantastic. My second visit was a call in order as well. The female that was waiting on me was more focused on some friend walking in the door than getting my order right. Subsequently, when I got home, my orders were incomplete. Service was obviously, still lacking. My third visit was again, a call in order, check out service was still slow and there always seems to be confusion going on between the register and getting orders out. Not sure why this isn't getting smoother with time and experience, so expect some delay when picking up an order. This visit on Saturday evening, the meals were just OK, the fries were on the cold side (temperature) and the chicken too. On the fence about returning at this point. I like having a hot chicken place in Franklin and the food started out great! Hope they can figure out a way provide hot, fresh food in a timely manner.

Cry baby for me! My co-workers and I stop in for lunch at least two or three times a month as it is right down the street from our office. I'm addicted to the jumbo hot chicken tenders but I can't do a lot of heat so the crybaby level is perfect for me. I've also had the chicken breast and it is great also. Sometimes I get the seasoned fries or if I want a few less calories I get the turnip greens. Both are fantastic. If you don't like any heat you can get the original heat level. Crybaby level is next. If you want more heat you can get the stop, drop, and roll. The hottest level is the executioner and I wouldn't recommend that to anyone. I can't imagine. There are pictures of people eating that one of which was carried out on a stretcher to an ambulance. Not for me but love my crybaby heat level.

This might be the best chicken I've ever had -- and I'm from KY. Great dive atmosphere. Quick service. Food was awesome. The chicken, at the medium spice, was plenty for me.

On a trip to Johnson City, My husband and I, on the advice from his cousin Sharanda, decided to stop by and give Big Shake's a try. I absolutely loved the Shrimp Burger. My husband ordered the fish and of course I sampled his and it was good and spicy. The prices weren't bad, we both ate for 20 bucks. You can't beat that. The staff was very nice and accommodating. The only low point was the air conditioning not working properly. On the drive back home, we will get our food to go.

Food quality and promptness is hit or miss. Some parties in our group got their food fairly quickly, while others didn't get theirs until the rest were done eating. The chicken wings were a little dry and didn't have enough enough seasoning. The crust on the chicken thighs wasn't very crispy. The fries were well seasoned and flavorful. The white beans needed more salt and tasted a little chalky.

Wow - finally a place in Franklin that does both hot chicken and fish, and do both right! In terms of the meats (chicken and fish), it's a tie with Bolton's, but Big Shake's trump card over the existing hot chicken establishments is their delicious shrimp burger. My oh my! Their sides are tasty and not made with pork grease etc, so it is pescetarian friendly. In terms of spice levels, their Executioner is appropriately named - don't attempt unless you know you have an iron stomach. It is a family run business - its nice to see the owners working hard to make great food a reality in this area. They are a super friendly bunch that cares about whether their customers are enjoying their meal or not. Food is made fresh to order so be prepared for a (worthwhile) wait. They have live music performances on some nights of the week. It's always a treat to eat here - the quality of food is pretty consistent. I heart this place!

Wow... what a find?!?! I found a Groupon and decided to give it a shot. The prices are reasonable and comparable to Hattie B's. There menu is a little bit for diverse that included shrimp burgers. It sounded really intriguing so I got that with turnip greens while Mike got the half chicken (cry baby spicy level) with white beans, mac n cheese (not available everyday). Everything was delicious. The chicken had the perfect crispy skin while the meat inside was moist and flavorful. The shrimp burger was fresh and really good. The turnip greens were buttery and creamy. The beans were really good too... I think Mike said that the mac n cheese were good. They do charge $0.10 for the cup but the water is free ;). The dining area is small and cramped. There's also tables and seating outside but it was too cold to sit outside. It is near downtown Franklin so it would be a drive from Nashville for some HOT CHICKEN.

Chicken is great, but this restaurant has no A/C, totally unacceptable but chicken is great. It must be over hundred degrees inside this place, don't bring your kids it's a health hazard

Their chicken and seasoned fries are on point! The new restaurant on 96 is a lot nicer than the one on Main but it's also quite a bit busier.

My co-worker told me to try the "Shrimp Burger". I thought it sounded crazy, but I did try it and loved it. Very well seasoned and a little bite to it with the ghost pepper mayo and fried jalapeños. The fries were not bad with spicy seasoning... I will try their wings next.

This food is fantastic! Loved the chicken breast, and the white beans, but have to say the catfish is the best I've ever had - EVER!! I cannot recommend this place enough :)

This was my first time to this restaurant. I love hot chicken and was excited about trying this place. I ordered the leg quarter entree hot.. I wanted potato salad, but they were out. So I ordered fries. My husband ordered the shrimp burger but they were out. So he got the catfish. He wanted mac and cheese but again they were out. It is 330 in the afternoon and to be out of so much was disappointing. I taste my chicken, ready for a burst of hotness, since I ordered stop, drop and roll (hot) and was quickly disappointed again. There was no spice. Did they run out of that too? On a positive note, the chicken was juicy. My husband's catfish was ok. I was very disappointed with my first visit. We drove 30 minutes to try a shrimp burger and hot chicken. This may be my last.
Decent Hot Chicken and nice being in the Franklin area. White beans were good and good to see on the menu. But no threat to Hattie B's and Princes.

It's always exciting to see how subjective an experience like eating hot chicken can be! Obviously I look forward to going back to Big Shakes and experience what ALOT of my fellow yelpers have. However based on this first visit I have to say, I just didn't get it. First of all, you can be a hole in the wall and still hire one person to handle the register. Having both the boys ringing people up AND taking orders AND fetching the food is just lack of management and easily fixed. I had to wait for my Styrofoam cup and plastic fork and knife even after my food arrived, which was annoying. The pricing is a little steep, in my opinion. It was clearly priced by the business owner who might be more concerned with making an immediate profit on material versus building a large clientele through superior quality food. I am not used to paying more than $7 for a single piece of lunch chicken, unless I'm drunk and it's a food truck. The parking sucks, as if you were in downtown on Broadway. I doubt the barber shop needs 5 spaces at lunch time. The flavor was just not there. The chicken meat was underseasoned and oily, the skin was soggy with oil and spicy (I ordered CryBaby, the minimal hot setting) and something else was off. I am not sure what oil is being used, whatever it is I could taste it, which is not how grams taught you how to fry it. Switch to peanut oil and up the temp. The fries were well seasoned and well fried, but unfortunately I don't come out and pay $10 for fries. The Sweet Tea was good, and the ice is large so it doesn't melt fast. With all the 5 stars on this place I may need a second trip to compare, maybe it was a one time issue.

Family owned business and it is easy to tell because from the kitchen to the front house you can tell they care. They are short handed but the food is worth the small extra weight! If you want a fine dinning sit down experience go to Red Pony, if you want some killer southern food with fantastic spice then you are in for a treat! All our dishes were " Stop Drop and Roll" spice level and it was exhilarating! Catfish: Big Flavor, Great Crunchy Corn meal breading. Chicken Strips: Pow Crunch Juice White Meat! Shrimp Burger: Never had one and it was fantastic! Sides: Potato Salad-Good, White Bean- Great, Coleslaw- Refreshing next to the heat! We Tasted The Love!

Good God Almighty! I was really hoping the "Executioner" heat level was the perfect step up that I needed from the "Stop Drop and Roll". SDR heat was awesome but not quite got enough for me. I'm a chili head so rarely is anything hot enough for me so the average spicy lover would probably be content. Well I just tried the Executioner level whole wings and it's not a step up in heat; it's TEN friggin steps up. I've never found anything that I couldn't eventually eat despite sweating, tearing up, and burning pain but after one bite I was all done!! I'm hoping that somebody just made an accident today and tripled the pepper power cause there ain't nobody that could eat that. For a point of comparison I would give the usual SDR level about a 7 and in today's case Executioner would be a 12. I could smell the pepper when I put my order in the car. Even if it wasn't inedible because of the heat level, the flavor sucked. Way overpowered by the pepper power to the point the chicken wasn't good. It was also over fried which is a common problem here. (I try to specify "light fry") But when they are on their game there is NO other hot chicken placethat can touch Big Shakes. I guess I got two wings that will be thrown away. Thank goodness I at least got 2 SDR that I could eat. I would have bet $1000 there ain't nobody that could have eaten the wings I got today! I dont care how bad ass you think you are. BIG SEAN, you got to put a heat level b/t SDR and the E if this is truly how it's gonna be every time.

came to restaurant at 8:50pm on a Tuesday and was told at the counter by employee that they are closed very poor service. People were still eating & sitting outside & door sign said open till 9pm!!!!! They suck!!!

Came here an hour before they close but they said no problem. So first impression was really good. Had the sampler with hot chicken (level 4 of 5...stop drop n roll) and catfish with greens and coleslaw. The chicken had a nice bite to it., but not overly hot for me. The catfish was fried to perfection and tasted great. My young son loved it too. It was perfectly seasoned even with the mildest spice level. The greens was a bit mushy and coleslaw tasted pretty good. The service was AWESOME and they were so friendly. We got done eating just in time for them to close but they kept telling us to take our time and not rush. This would've been a 4 star review but I added 1 more star for the friendliness of the service.

Not sure how I've lived in Franklin three years and just now found out we had our own hot chicken option! Well, thanks to Yelp, I came across Big Shake's Hot Chicken tonight, and that's where my husband and I came to dinner. Located about a mile from downtown Franklin off West Main, it's easy to not notice this place even exists. It's definitely a hole in the wall and by appearance and ambience similar to Prince's Hot Chicken in North Nashville (the original hot chicken). My husband and I both got the chicken breast quarter prepared at the heat level of "stop drop and roll," which is the 3rd hottest out of 4 levels. Like others have mentioned, I would agree that Big Shake's is about one level of hotness below Prince's for that given level of heat. Stop drop and roll will definitely make sweat beads form on your forehead, but so does "medium" at Prince's. With that said, the chicken was perfectly cooked, comes out piping hot and tender, and the crust was nice and crispy. The sides were very good. The turnip greens were fantastic, and mildly creamy in texture. The potato salad was also satisfactory, and were most beneficial in calming the burn after the three pickles were long devoured. The prices were fair, maybe a little higher compared to other hot chicken places. But the portions were plentiful and quality was worth it. We will return, but I have to have adequate time go by for my stomach to handle another round of hot chicken (so much for following my gastroenterologist's recommendation for me to follow a strict bland diet).

In my pursuit for something with heat, I found Big Shakes. Now my definition of heat varies from most. On my first visit, I tried the "Stop, Drop, and Roll" style. Every bite was delicious and flavorful as the last. The breading was consistent and beautiful in color. Now one thing about the chicken at Big Shakes: it's not necessarily "wet" with hot sauce. It's dusted with spices and seasoning and then finished off with a certain crispness to it that leaves you wanting more. That being said, the chicken is moist! I'm not from the south and I typically don't care for southern food, but the side of beans was so flavorful, I wish I could eat it everyday. The fries were your run of the mill commercial French fries. The only "complaint" that I have is they give you a big piece of Texas toast for your chicken to lie on. That piece of toast is mush by the time you finish all the chicken (chicken juices being soaked up). On my next visit, I tried the hottest of the hot, the "Executioner." The staff looked at me like I was crazy and asked me if I liked really hot stuff, of course! In terms of heat, the "Executioner" was only marginally hotter than "Stop, Drop, and Roll." Definitely not a big jump like I had imagined, but still quite flavorful. I will definitely be back whenever I need my fix of spicy foods!

Better than You Know Who in Nashville! Don't get stuck waiting in line in Nashville for some darn good hot chicken AND hot fish AND shrimp burgers! I tried the shrimp burger for the first time today as well as the white beans and both were fantastic. The Southwest shrimp burger has a ghost pepper mayo sauce! The white beans are served warm in a smoky sauce. They were so delicious. As far as the chicken goes, it's awesome. If you get the chicken fingers you will get more crust and thus it will seem a lot hotter than if you just do 1/4 chicken! They have a new location closer to I-65, on Highway 96 aka Murfreesboro Road in Franklin. Haven't had their official opening yet....just soft opening!

Good food although the chicken hot scale is a little unreliable. Sometimes the medium is hot then the next time it's bland. It's expensive and seating in the old franklin store is not great.

Had big shakes for first time at new location. It was awesome! Got the stop drop and roll. Just the right amount of heat. If you don't like spicy, don't get it. Get something milder. Awesome be establishment in Franklin. Franklin needs more places like this.

If you get a to-go order, do not eat the bread. Got some reasonably spicy chicken to-go for a friend and I. The chicken was AMAZING. Perfectly tender, perfectly fried. Just enough kick. Wow. Fries were a little soggy. Figured they might help with the heat. Could have just been the to-go experience, but they really don't have enough space to dine-in. Ate the bread. It soaked up all the heat. Immediately regretted my decision (besides, it was soggy and greasy and really gross. I'm warning you!) Would definitely eat again- I cannot rave enough about their food. 2 meals to-go for around $22 bucks (with tip!) was pretty dang reasonable.

The food here is amazing. I really love hot chicken and Big Shake has put a lot of love into the product he puts out. The Hot Mess sandwich and fries is a great way to start your first trip here. The crispness of the chicken along with the flavor makes this one of the best hot chicken joints in Nashville. We showed up about 30 minutes before closing on a Saturday and the staff was more than welcoming. I highly recommend this place and will pass the information on to friends and family. Personally, I can't wait to go back and try some more items.

After 4 visits, I manned up and tried the Executioner. I teared up, my throat closed. I was on the verge of sending for a priest. I love this place! I like hot stuff, but the Stop, Drop and Roll is plenty. The chicken is as good as it gets and the shrimp burger is unique. Think of an awesome crab cake sandwich...but better. You won't be disappointed..

My husband and I had a late lunch in Big Shakes recently and ordered, what else? The "Hot Mess" Chicken Sandwich. We managed to arrive just in time because right after we ordered, a huge line started to form continuing right out the door. When our food arrived, it was hard to notice anything other than the chicken sandwich because it was HUGE! And boy was it tasty. The chicken was moist and seasoned perfectly. It was spicy but not out of control hot. As a side, we ordered fries that had some sort of seasoning on them that I wish I could have asked for a little bit more of, but overall any side dishes paled in comparison to that glorious sandwich. We'll be back! Oh, and the musician was outstanding. :) Two things, I wish they offered beer with their hot chicken. Sweet tea works, but sometimes nothing cools you down as well as a good glass of ice cold beer. Also, as a suggestion it would be great if they had biscuit sliders for a little "to-go" option.

I was visiting from out of town and this place was recommended to me by a local bar tender. The chicken was delicious! I had the Cry Baby seasoning because I wanted to play it safe. It wasn't as spicy as I thought it would be, which was nice. The girl who took my order recommended that I get the ranch sauce with it, so I did. Let me say that it compliments the chicken well. If I'm ever in Franklin again, I'll definitely come back.

LOVE this place. Best hot chicken ever. They drop the chicken every 20 minutes only, so it stays juicy. You might have to wait a little bit because of that but it is worth it and they let you know that up front which I appreciate. Menu items you HAVE to try: Cry Baby Chicken Shrimp Burger white beans (OMG) And the Fried Oreos.

5 stars for the food, absolutely. I had the whiting platter. As good a fried fish plate as I've ever head. Added on 3 butterfly shrimp: very good. Why only 4 stars? Service was 2 stars at best but the food was so good that I ended up not caring..... that much. Took a while to get the food, which is understandable since it's made from scratch, but 20 minutes off-peak hours? Too slow. It took several tries to get my order right when I ordered at the register. "I'll have the whiting platter with seasoned fries, an add-on of 3 butterfly shrimp and a soft drink." "What side would you like?" "Seasoned fries." "Whiting platter w/ cole slaw and a drink, anything else?" "That's a whiting platter w/ seasoned fries and a butterfly shrimp add-on, plus a soft drink." Few more iterations and he finally got it right. When my food delivered to the table the runner dropped off my dish w/ mustard and ranch dressing for dipping. I requested tartar sauce and cocktail sauce. "Got it." He returned with, drum roll, mustard and ranch dressing! "Thank you, but can I get tartar sauce and cocktail sauce as well." "Sure, no problem." It's a good thing the food was so good, because the service needs to be improved.

This place is the real deal. Awesome hot chicken and deep fried Oreos. The owners are local - live right here in Franklin and we like to support local business. Friendly staff and live music when we were there on a Friday night. Supposedly the shrimp burger is awesome but was sold last time.

This place serves fried chicken not "Hot Chicken". I've had Stop Drop and Roll which at the time was the hottest, and there was basically no spice. Mild at best. As far as fried chicken goes it was good, not great. The fries were generic and greens were ok. I found it overpriced for what I got.

Hot Chicken is a Nashville specialty, and Big Shake's does it well. I got a breast and it was moist and full of flavor. I got it "hot" and it was hot, but not overwhelmingly hot. Perfect! Then, when you get done there is a flavor soaked piece of white bread that tops it all off.

I ordered the Cry Baby Breast Quarter Platter and the Original Big Shakes Combo Platter. Everything was great. The food was well seasoned and it didn't take all day for it to be fixed like other Hot Chicken Restaurants. It's a nice spot to go eat great food and hear some good music.

I hesitate to give it 5 stars for fear that the lines will grow long and I will have to wait to get a table. It's a small hole in the wall, as others have mentioned, but seems just the right atmosphere for a proper hot chicken joint. This is joint food for sure. If the digs are too nice, it just ain't right. The fried chicken breast was juicy and perfectly seasoned. I had it "Cry Baby Style" which is the milder of the hot seasonings. The crispy fried skin carried just the right heat yielded to a generous portion of breast meat. The rest of my party raved over fried catfish with house made tartar and hot chicken fingers. The turnip greens were unique and delicious, with a nearly creamy texture. Coleslaw was good and crunchy. The kids have raved all afternoon over the fried oreos. They are conspiring now to start a deep fried everything restaurant bubbling with enthusiasm for anything that could be battered and fried. When asked what they were made of, one of the kids said "deep fried heaven." I'm not sure I'd go that far, but I'd go for another.

Hot Chicken is addictive. If you've never had it before, you need to know this is so much more than the buffalo hot wings you get at some run of the mill sports bar or with a pizza. This is something completely different altogether. Hot Chicken is fried chicken, perfectly cooked, hot and juicy, and seasoned with a liberal amount of cayenne and other"secret" spices. Hot Chicken comes in different heart levels or "strengths". The hottest levels are akin to napalm (Or so I'm told), but the mildest levels are more "well seasoned" than spicy. There is a level for most people, except for those who like their food bland. (Not me) Prince's Hot Chicken Shack is credited as the birthplace of true Nashville Hot Chicken, and their legend has compelled celebrities and common folk alike, from all over the world, to travel to their ghetto culinary Mecca. Google their name and you will find articles and video clips all paying homage to the Prince's Hot Chicken Legacy. There have been many imitators, but (IMHO) no true competition for the Hot Chicken "Crown". Prince's Hot Chicken Shack stood apart from the competition that emerged over the years because of tangible differences between their product and the product of those mimicking their creation. Whatever the differences are, they have kept all other comers at bay. While tasty, other "hot chicken" just hasn't compared. Until, perhaps, now. Big Shake's arrived to a field packed with pretenders and contenders, most of them with little packs of "fanboys" and groupies. Hattie B 's, Pepper Fire, 400 Degrees, and Bolton's are the most recognizable names from the past few years. They all have had their own spin on the dish, arguably each bringing a new riff to a classic fave, but none have truly cracked the" Prince's Code". I entered "Big Shake's Hot Chicken and Fish" as a skeptic. I did not imagine there would ever be a true and authentic option for real Hot Chicken in town. The popularity and legend of Hot Chicken has become more than a culinary dish. It is now a veritable culture. And the working class culture associated with most Hot Chicken seemed to clash with the posh environment of Franklin. Authentic Hot Chicken, consistent with that culture, should be reasonably priced large portions, freshly prepared to order, and served out a small window, set in the wall of a small "shack" or dive in a sketchy neighborhood. Franklin Hot Chicken options have been more appetizers and sandwiches than entrees, and really have been served as more of just a trendy nod to the dish than a true presentation of it. I imagined that "Big Shake's" would just be more of the same. However, inside the small but comfortable restaurant, there were more signs that the proprietor understood the CULTURE of Hot Chicken, not just the dish. Simple, even sparse decor, a campy but deliberately "country charming" collection of mismatched tables and chairs, A simple menu featuring the star of the show in all the appropriate strengths, as well as a slightly larger collection of accompaniments and sides than found at most Hot Chicken Shacks. I tried the Leg Quarter in their "Cry Baby" (Medium) strength. For my two accompaniments with the platter I ordered, I selected the French Fries (Crinkle cut, another sign that the owners understand the Hot Chicken culture. Virtually all the top Hot Chicken Shacks followed Prince's in serving the dish with crinkle cut fries.) and the Macaroni and Cheese. Both sides were OUTSTANDING! The french fries were hot and crisp, perfectly seasoned to complement the chicken. The Macaroni and Cheese was amazing, a wonderful flavor and creaminess. A perfect contrast to the spice of the chicken! And speaking of the chicken: This stuff is INCREDIBLE! The chicken was hot, juicy, fresh, and packed with flavor! Just the right amount of heat. Not so much to overwhelm the dish, but enough to bring it to life! But what struck me immediately was that this was the most in line with Prince's (the Godfather of Hot Chicken) that I had found ANYWHERE! I didn't think it was possible before, but I actually think they may have cracked the "Prince's Code"! Amazing! As sacrilegious as it seems to put in writing, I may actually slightly PREFER Big Shake's to Prince's! And, if I factor in the cleaner digs, the better side dishes, that they accept cards, and the shorter drive, it makes Big Shake's the CLEAR WINNER! (Hard to believe, but true.) I will always respect Prince's as the originator of this dish. Prince's was my "first". (LOL) It will always be a fave for me and countless others around the globe. But this Franklin upstart has, at least for me, "hit number one with a bullet"!

Some good hot chicken here in the frank town! As others have observed, no, it is not as hot as the options in Nashville(got the hottest level, was about as hot as Boltons medium, maybe a little less); but that's not to say it isn't absolutely tasty and well done. Splurged and also tried the deep fried Oreos and cookies, and those basically twice baked my noodle. Will be returning to try shrimp burger at some point! Edit: went today and said "as hot as possible" and it was twice as hot as normal. So it is possible for them to compete with the other options in that aspect.

Would be good if they had items in stock that were listed on their menu. Oh well... might try them again in the future, might not.

I brought my husband to Big Shake's because he loves hot / spicy food. Our dear friend already warn us " chicken is good, but be aware it take minimum 30 mins if they are not busy!!!!). We decided to go anyway because we are in Franklin. Frist , parking is limited second, as soon as we got in two boys at the register told us " we are almost at closing time so we can only take it TO GO", yeah, it is close to closing time, but you are not closed yet, right? I work in restaurant and have my own before, but we never and ever turn customers down by the reason like this. Third, we pick three items to order, " sorry , we are out of those" Fourth, I feel sorry for my girls , so I order Fried Oreo for them. and Yes and Yes and Yes , it took 20 mins for my order. You know what, if you work this slow , you should change your hours and close at 5 pm, so you have time to make orders for customers who order at 3 pm and get their order by 5 pm. By the way the Fried Oreo, is oily and still raw inside. Wasting my $$$$ and time. They have a very tiny window A/C, so it is pretty hot inside.

Williamson County's hottest new restaurant is BIG SHAKE'S!!! This place has everything. Perfect fries, crispy chicken, fried oreos, catfish so fresh and succulent you'll stand up and proclaim it to the restaurant! Set in a small space that you expect for a classic hot chicken joint and playing classic '80s funk, this place lives up to its billing. SNL skit aside, EVERYONE has told me to go try Big Shake's and THEY WERE RIGHT! It's sparsely decorated, simple the way it should be, you can read about how Shark Tank missed the boat on this multi-million dollar idea, and I'm pretty sure they were playing Rapper's Delight when I strolled in with my wife. Everything I wanted and expected! The staff is incredibly nice, very welcoming and friendly, and you can tell this franchise is on it's way up! The chicken is definitely better than legendary Prince's AND newcomer Hattie B's, second only to Nashville's 400 Degrees for me. The hot chicken is perfectly juicy on the inside, perfectly cripsy on the outside, absolutely fresh and served with the most perfect crinkle-cut french fry you'll ever taste!!! The hot catfish is so perfect; cripsy, flaky, exploding with flavor, seasoned perfectly, deep fried in batter that you'll dream about the rest of the day. I've enjoyed hot chicken and fish all over the southeastern United States and when I'm not in the mood to drive more than 15 minutes, Big Shake's has become my new official local chicken place!!! Note: I would actually drive 2 hours to eat at this restaurant!

Very good fried chicken and fish. Three stars, though, since my "stop, drop and roll" (the second hottest listed heat level) chicken was not hot. It had a bit of spice to it, but wouldn't register as a mild at any of the hot chicken places in Nashville. Heck, when I order the second hottest option at a hot chicken establishment, I do so with the expectation of extreme pain with discomfort lasting 24 hours. So, as a fried chicken spot 4 stars? For hot chicken, though, it left me wanting. My bathroom might be happy, but I'm not.

Nashville Hot Chicken may be all the rage -- and Big Shake's version is really good -- but my favorite item on the menu is the Shrimp Burger. Amazing!! I've never had anything like it. Where else can you find a hamburger with shrimp. I ordered it because I heard it was Chef Davis's signature dish, but was skeptical. No more! I can't get enough. Tender, flavorful, shrimp cooked perfectly -- done but not rubery. And did I say flavorful? Available in two versions -- I like the BBQ better (mainly because my belly is way too sensitive for the really hot stuff). Oh, and don't forget the White Beans as your side. Oh my gosh... tender, creamy, great flavor. I order at least one side every time. And my wife and I fight over the one side, so I really have to order two. I'm running out of adjectives to describe the food at this dive. As others have said, it's a small place on W. Main not far from Downtown Franklin. My problems is I live almost walking distance. It is wayyy too close. It's not a fancy place. They have some rough edges. Everything doesn't work just right. But the food -- Ohh the food is so good.

Excellent shrimp burger today and some of the best sides, turnip greens and white beans, that I have had in the South. And the chicken tenders are great too! A short wait, under 10 minutes, while they cooked fresh to order. I highly recommend stopping by for a great meal!

Players gonna play, haters gonna hate, I'm gonna Big Shake. Really good chicken, sides, and staff. High quality good at a good price and a simple atmosphere. Very nice meal for my wife and I, we will go back.

This was one of those spur of the moment lunch choices that paid off big! I got the Hot Mess chicken sandwitch (crybaby sauce, lettuce, onions, pickles, ghost pepper mayo) the chicken was amazing nice heat to it and the Best crispy breeding I have ever had. Loved it! My wife got the Southwest Shrimp Burger (topped with fried jalapenos, onions, ghost pepper mayo and lettuce) it is formed into a patty much like a crab cake but full of flavor. Would definitely buy it again. Also have a good season on their fries. For a little hole in the wall place I was very impressed. I will have to come here the next time I'm in the Nashville area.

This was our first but not last visit to BIg Shake's! I have driven by for at least a year and never thought about trying it,but am glad we did. Went last Friday evening and they were fairly busy, with lots of takeout orders. We tried the catfish platter and the half chicken, and shared the greens/fries/slaw and the white beans.Everything was great! The food was all fresh, and the chicken was not greasy! Employees were very friendly.

This place is awesome, best fried chicken I've had. I had the tenders platter and plan to go back to try the fish too!

Chicken is fair. The fried Oreos are great. I could eat a million of them. They reminded me of something that I would get at the State fair. Definitely worth a visit for these little guys. My chicken tenders were fresh. I got the cry baby which was hot but not as hot as 400° hot chicken. Mac cheese was ok and my fries were fresh and hot. Two stars for the tasty dessert and one star for food tenders and fries being fresh. My friends breast was not that good to him and my girlfriend said that the fish was not as seasoned as she wanted. She disliked the Mac and cheese and my friend did not his white beans. I will be back for fried Oreos and I might give the chicken another try.

This place is AWESOME!! Owners are very friendly and the whiting fish sandwich and the jumbo whole wings are off the chain. No other place in the Nashville or surrounding area comes close to Big Shakes. We live in Antioch but the drive to Franklin is well worth it..You will not be disappointed!!! .

First off the hot chicken is great 4 stars. The location is 1 star and the service is 2 stars. Hence the 3 star review. The location is on south Main Street (down by government center). The eatery is small, sandwiched in between a barbershop and the laundromat. Parking is scarce but shouldn't be to much of an issue since it only seats about 20 people. They offer both take out and sit down service. Wait staff take your order at the table, we went on a Saturday for lunch and the kids working there were all young and very green, it took a while for them to get to us. We ordered from the soft opening menu, my kids had basic wings and tenders, I had the ¼ chicken breast "stop drop and roll" hot, the highest level. There are no fountain drinks, sweet tea or adult beverages. They have a fridge with bottled soda, Gatorade and lemonade. Food came out piping hot. In a plastic basket lined with wax paper. The seasoned fries are crinkle cut and delicious. My chicken was perfectly cooked crispy crust and moist inside, it was served with slices dill pickle and on top of two slices of white brakes to soak up juices. The spice level left a pleasant tingle (I think it should have been hotter) if you like spicy foods the hottest level here should be a walk in the park for you. The kids loves the chicken tenders and wings. It took a while to get our check. They do take plastic. I will be going back, however, just not to sit down. I will call ahead and get take out. I forgot to mention the music! 5 stars for the classic 80's playlist.

Such a great find! Some of the best fried chicken I've had. We had the cry baby whole chicken with fries, white beans, and greens. The heat on the chicken was perfect, fries were delicious, and the other sides were great as well. Great value for the money! Low key location (somewhat easy to miss), seemed comfortable enough to eat there although I got ours to go. Highly recommend!

Awesome! The best food I've had in TN. The ingredients were high quality, chicken was fresh (not frozen), friendly staff, and great musician. We sampled quite a bit of the menu and everything was fantastic. We went with a group and had fried chicken, greens, slaw, white beans, chicken tenders, shrimp burger and catfish. Cry baby was hot enough for me. Will definitely go back on our next to TN.

I got the leg quarter platter with the "Stop, Drop N Roll" heat level. My order was to go, so I did not get to eat it until over two hours later. The outer crust on the chicken was still crispy, the chicken was moist and flavorful, and the heat level was just slightly above spicy. The chicken is served sitting on a slice of white bread, which absorbs all the juices and spices. The bread was almost better than the chicken, but, be warned, it contains a potent level of heat. Slaw and potato salad are usually "seen one, seen 'em all," but these folks have tweaked the flavor just enough to make the taste new and inviting. Three hours after picking up my order, I got to try the fried Oreos. Anything this good has to be bad for you, but you only live once. I can't wait to go back and try the Oreos fresh from the fryer. The shrimp burgers and fish sandwiches are also on my "to do" list. Be prepared to wait, as your food is cooked when you order. There are only seven small tables inside, and four outside tables, so takeout is my preferred option. The staff are very friendly and courteous, and the place is very clean. It is great to have a real, quality hot chicken restaurant this close. I live in Fairview, and it would be great if they opened another location here.

Hot chicken in Franklin! Granted, there are a few other places in Franklin now that have it, but this is the real deal, as close as you're gonna get to a Prince's experience. This ain't your yuppy restaurant, this is as real and down home as you can get. You got the daughter taking the orders at the front and the mom overseeing the cooking in the back and bringing orders to the customers. The dad is the impetus and creator for the concept and recipes. He was on Shark Tank, I gather, a few years ago to promote his shrimp burgers. Now on to the food... Waiting for our orders, I observed plates piled high with big pieces of hot chicken all around me. They looked perfectly fried and glistening with that deep red that promised a nice burn. I asked a few how it was and they all said great. We got the whitefish sandwiches (since we became pescetarians last year) so didn't try the hot chicken, but man that fish sandwich was legit! Big pieces fried up with that thin cornmeal batter, on 2 pieces of white bread, loaded up with onion, pickles and mustard. And spicy too! I got the 2nd level of heat, called cry baby, and it was a nice medium level heat. My hubs had the Stop Drop N Roll which packed more serous heat. We got fries but they have other sides like homemade mac n cheese, green beans, cole slaw, maybe a few more. I asked for some of that spicy goodness on our fries, so they gave us some small cups with it so we could dip our fries in it. All in all it was super tasty and plentiful, I couldn't eat all of mine so hubs gladly dug in. (word of warning - check for bones in your fish. I had a few in mine) The owner/wife checked on us and asked how it was, if the spice was ok. We told her, frankly, that the Stop Drop N Roll was not the hottest - we've had hotter at Prince's. Granted most people can't take that level of heat. But for those who crave that Nashville style napalm, and many do (including the men in my family) we told her she may want to take it up a notch or two. She was very happy for the feedback and open to suggestions. She told us about the shrimp burgers which they don't have on the menu yet but will in a few days. Her husband crafted the recipe after their daughter became pescetarian and they are supposedly the bomb! I can't wait to go back to try them too, and take our sons - who are SERIOUS HOTTTT Chicken aficionados. Nice family run place! Located more in the Franklin 'hood a few blocks south of the Admin Complex, next to a family wash. So pretty basic as far as decor, but good solid food at good prices. The food is cooked up fresh when you place your order so be prepared to wait. (may want to call ahead to place order) Oh, and did I mention they have Deep Fried Oreos?!!!!

I was so excited to try this place, but I was not impressed. First of all, the place is a little sketchy looking and since they make everything to order, most tables are occupied by people waiting for to go orders, but the ambiance doesn't really make you want to stay any longer than possible. The tables didn't exactly match and the one we were at wasn't balanced. Something simple that a new place should have done. They had to write the sides on the receipt since the register doesn't do it apparently. They also failed to include our order of deep fried Oreos and we didn't notice until we got home. Bottled pop and a large water jug with ice in it are the drinks. Now the food. We had the dark and white chicken quarter at the cry baby heat setting. It had a lot of short term intense heat with no relief. It didn't last long after the meal, but during was a little numbing to flavor. The chicken was crispy and moist. Well cooked. The sides were hit and miss. The green beans were good and peppery (according to the other half) and the fries were frozen crinkle cut fries which I like, but the crime was the mac and cheese. The noodles were cooked to death, almost to paste. The flavor may have been okay, but the starchy mush that was the noodles made it inedible. The white bread and two pickle chips were there. I want to try the shrimp burger that he brought to Shark Tank but they don't carry it yet. Kinda makes the points the sharks made about distribution seem real.

I love hot chicken off the bone but tried the chicken sandwich cry baby style and it is amazing. Chicken breast is also great but the sandwich is a must try. One of my top hot chicken places and doesn't hurt that delivery dudes delivers in franklin.

I am a big fan of spicy food that puts my mouth on fire. This place delivered!!! When I walked in and saw the four different levels of heat I knew I found the right place. The staff was very friendly & offered me a sample of the sauce to try to see which level I wanted. I tried the chicken sandwich with the stop, drop & roll sauce. I enjoyed every last bite of it. I will be back again.

(4)T L.
(4)Cailee O.
(5)John R.
(4)Dawn S.
(5)Robyn L.
(4)Leanne B.
(5)Joe B.
(5)Pete D.
It's no frills inside, but the food is classic comfort food. Can be slammed at the lunch hour, they do take phone orders. I would return to Big Shake's.
(4)Keith B.
(4)Mark B.
Another great experience at Big Shakes Hot Chicken. Stop, drop, and roll chicken with jalapeno mayo and dill pickles was over the top delicious. Greens were tasty. Another home run.
(5)Brien W.
(4)Will W.
Very, very good. Good food, clean place, Very nice employees. Just proves you don't have to be treated rude to get great hot chicken in Nashville. The greens and white beans are worth the trip itself. Love it!!
(5)Susan H.
(4)Margaret F.
(4)Sarah G.
(5)Mallory S.
(4)Michael R.
went to the shack for catfish tried the medium heat called crybaby was awesum will be back tried the white beans and coleslaw both very good
(4)Cody R.

(3)Kelli S.

(5)Bill D.

(4)Sam L.

(5)Robert D.
Chicken is great, but this restaurant has no A/C, totally unacceptable but chicken is great. It must be over hundred degrees inside this place, don't bring your kids it's a health hazard
(4)Rachel P.
Their chicken and seasoned fries are on point! The new restaurant on 96 is a lot nicer than the one on Main but it's also quite a bit busier.
(4)Bryan H.
My co-worker told me to try the "Shrimp Burger". I thought it sounded crazy, but I did try it and loved it. Very well seasoned and a little bite to it with the ghost pepper mayo and fried jalapeños. The fries were not bad with spicy seasoning... I will try their wings next.
(4)Katie H.
This food is fantastic! Loved the chicken breast, and the white beans, but have to say the catfish is the best I've ever had - EVER!! I cannot recommend this place enough :)
(5)Meredith W.

Definitely a "Big Shake" to your taste buds when you bite into a crispy, tender & juicy "Crybaby" Chicken Sandwich. Two battered and perfectly fried chicken breasts on an oversized roll, dipped in their signature hot sauce (or plain for the faint of tongue) and garnished with a little bit of raw onion and dill pickle slices. This sandwich packs the heat (and doubled up in heat when I added some "Stop, Drop & Roll" sauce). Beautiful greens sautéed in butter were some of the most unusual (best) I've ever had. Usually greens are done in fat back or bacon, but these were quite different; so tender they almost came across as creamy. Really, really good. Seasoned fries were crispy and savory, very nicely seasoned. Two minor drawbacks: One--the chicken seasoning relied heavily on the heat...which covered the chili, pepper, garlic and paprika seasonings. But the overall taste was great. Two--parking is at a premium (check out back if front of building is full.) Also sample fried catfish...another winner with its golden brown cornmeal crust and moist, flaky body. Get it! Staff: Friendly and courteous. Service/wait time: average for made on demand.

Had to leave another!!! Had to stock up for the weekend via grubhub.com .... 12 wings x 9 Jumbo Tenders!!!!! AMAZING GRACE!!!!!!!! Best chicken in TN!!!!! Hands down!!!
(5)Robert B.
(5)Craig L.

(1)Joanna F.

(5)Michael C.
Good food although the chicken hot scale is a little unreliable. Sometimes the medium is hot then the next time it's bland. It's expensive and seating in the old franklin store is not great.
(3)Tyler H.
Had big shakes for first time at new location. It was awesome! Got the stop drop and roll. Just the right amount of heat. If you don't like spicy, don't get it. Get something milder. Awesome be establishment in Franklin. Franklin needs more places like this.
(5)Maggie M.
(4)Merrick S.
Nice and Hot just like I like it!
(5)Allen R.
(5)Blu S.
(5)Bill D.
Back on track. Best hot chicken in town . Just finished feeding my craving . I would eat here everyday if I could. Love the family atmosphete. You can taste the passion for making great food in every bite.
(5)Kimberly B.
(5)Elin H.
(5)Liz J.
(5)Randy B.
(4)Meg P.
This place is the real deal. Awesome hot chicken and deep fried Oreos. The owners are local - live right here in Franklin and we like to support local business. Friendly staff and live music when we were there on a Friday night. Supposedly the shrimp burger is awesome but was sold last time.
(5)Ryan M.
This place serves fried chicken not "Hot Chicken". I've had Stop Drop and Roll which at the time was the hottest, and there was basically no spice. Mild at best. As far as fried chicken goes it was good, not great. The fries were generic and greens were ok. I found it overpriced for what I got.
(2)Paul J.
(4)Malcolm R.
(5)Elliott W.
(5)Ted B.
(5)Dylan F.
(4)David T.

Nice folks. Good for family visits and carry out. Call in first, and you are good to go! Yummy!

We live in Antioch but the drive to Franklin is well worth it..You will not be disappointed!!! .

Pros Huge portions Great tasting food Table Service is great Cons The place is small with not enough seating at times Parking is tight The wait for food seems long $9 chicken tenders w/ sides
