If I could give no stars I would. The last two times I have gotten food there, something was real bad about it. Had food delivered to my house and the shrimp in the shrimp fried rice was rancid. Then when I went inside to order yesterday, only to get home to find out the dumpling sauce tasted foul and smelled putrid, and the egg drop soup was so bland the not even rice or salt could make it better. Also it smelled like concentrated urine....this place used to be really good two years back...what happened???

Pretty good food though their cold food was much better than the other food. I especially enjoyed the pig ears and the cold noodles. The tripe and bamboo dish was okay but lacked flavor. The sautéed string beans were just okay. Also had a fried pork dish that was okay but had a bit to much filler veggies with it. Pork though was nice and crunchy. Fried tofu was also okay but I have had much better. Texture of tofu was off to me. Decor and service was pretty good overall.

First time at Mulan with some friends. They've been open for 8 yrs and had currently changed their menus with a variety of Sichuan dishes. Its really good and I believe they have stepped up a notch for Traditional Asian cuisine in Memphis. Prices are pretty decent and reasonable. There is also a live piano bar in the middle of the restaurant. Something different and romantic. After around 8-9pm the karaoke becomes lively with customers singing while eating. Even the staff joins in later on. Can't wait to go back again!

I've been told that I need to write a more detailed review of this place since this is my most frequently visited Chinese restaurant. Mulan has a good mix of authentic Chinese and American Chinese. If not for Mulan, many of the previously exclusively American Chinese (Royal Panda, Wangs, etc) places here wouldn't have started making authentic dishes for foodies or folks like me who like authentic Asian foods. The service here is excellent. The folks here are really friendly. I've always had a good experience. The decor here is modern Asian I suppose with a piano in the room. There are fake plants, however. A "new" thing for you foodies to try: REAL HOT POT!!! The hot pot is $40, and you get a selection of 2 meats and 3 vegetables out of a huge list of ingredients. The hot pot arrive on the table, with your choice of just broth, mala (spicy) broth, or both with a split in the middle of the pot. I prefer the spicy. Unfortunately I can't eat this by myself or with just one other; it's a meal for a party of 3 or 4. In my previous review I mentioned my usual dishes. Yup, those are still my "goto" dishes, and I should probably add the Mao's Braised Pork and Beef Flank with Tofu to the list. That said, the authentic dishes here tend to be on the oily side. I've tried sushi here once; I would say it's definitely presentable and passible for the Memphis average. There is no good "REAL" sushi place in Memphis, with the most passable ones being Edo and sometimes Sekisui (not consistent). Sushi isn't supposed to be bulky, and we're supposed to taste the ingredients, not have it covered up with sauce. Better than nothing I suppose!

Disappointing, mediocre food. Much better Chinese (or Americanized Chinese) at other places. Tastes like frozen food with too much salt to hide the poor flavoring.

THE BEST Chinese in the Memphis Metro area. The fried tofu is a fave of mine. The sesame chicken is to die for. They even have a piano player on Sundays. The food is fresh and light, not overly salty or greasy and you get a lot of it. The soups are also fresh and really good. Love the shredded carrots in rice wine vinegar as a palate cleanser. Definitely a go to place. The little alcoves offer almost private seating.

I've only been here once and the food was ok. I loved the atmosphere and the décor. Ok, I LOVED the décor. It was so intricate. It gave the feel of a a really fancy authentic place (I'm not a valid source for what's authentic though). I thought it was neat- but a little odd- that they had a lady playing songs on the piano all throughout the night. I recognized a good number of them even if I couldn't remember their names. I tried their mixed vegetable soup. It was ok but I'll be getting eggdrop soup next time for sure. I wasn't all that impressed with the sushi which is why the rating is 3. It may be what I chose, but it was just ok. I got spicy shrimp and the Collierville roll and wasn't really struck by either one. I will say this: They have the BEST crab wontons I have ever had. First, they're made flat, which is unlike anywhere else I've ever been. This means the filling is spread all throughout the wonton and you don't get that nasty crunchy part at the top which always ends up being like half of the wonton. Also, their wonton filling is amazing. It's not overly sweet like I've had at other places- I actually could taste the crab. The sauce that comes with it complements it perfectly, but if you don't agree, they're also great just by themselves. I would love to go here again and give a review of their food (and snag some more wontons!), but I think I may go elsewhere for sushi. Summary: Buy the wontons. DO IT. Want to try: Chicken Tofu in Hot Pot or Bamboo Shoots in Hot Pot Loved: - Crab Meat Wontons Ok: - Spicy Shrimp Nah: - Collierville

Awesome crab meat wonton!! Chicken fried rice was delicious. And the waitress was there every time I needed a refill!! Awesome!

OK food and pricey as usual. Happy Family had a nice selection of shrimp, beef, and chicken. The american version of Mapo tofu was quite tasty (the szechuan version is too oily for my taste). And the Seafood tofu soup was quite good...piping hot and loaded with tender seafood. The seafood combination in a hot wok was a waste of time, however...two shrimp, a few bay scallops, and loads of imitation crab with lots of veggies...certainly not worth the premium price. Service was quite good as usual. Overall, OK.

We have become regulars at Mulan. We typically always order the same dishes: the mixed veggies, the chicken hot pot and the crispy tofu. All very good. The service is good and 80% of the times we've been there, there has been an older lady playing the piano. She's really good too. :) Can't attest as the authenticity of the dishes but they seem pretty authentic to me and there are always Chinese people dinning there, which I always take as a good sign.

Shrimp rolls are great. Sushi is average. Everything else is very bland! Way over priced for what you get.

Ordered delivery and have always had a great experience... Fast easy friendly. Our delivery today was late and I called. I was told the manager was out and spoke to Chris. He said they were "busy" and my order was waiting to be delivered... 50 minutes after ordering and they would get to it. Then hung up. I called back again- nicely- and asked Chris politely why he hung up on me ... And he denied it and said he'd make it right. Click. Husband had to call back and confirm they were crediting our account, and he said they were just "too busy" and "blamed staff"for over promising. It's now 8;45 and super disappointing.

Eggplant with garlic $8 is worth the trip alone. Sweet with a kick of Szechuan peppercorns yum yum. My toddler loves the house fried rice and egg foo young hubby likes the "happy family" and hot n sour soup. Note we've had different versions of "mapo tofu" here some is American style which is much milder and less chili oil than the Chinese menu version. Dishes are pricey but if you are dining in the service is great and the live pianist on the weekends is terrific. She plays standards with ease and takes requests. She's very very good. They have sushi here and offer takeout and delivery as well. We've been coming since before the baby. This restaurant was our first meal out with a newborn. She's literally grown up here haha.

My food was pretty good. One of the meals at the table was too spicy for humans (the perfect combo) Be careful. We had to wait too long with no service up front and the bartender didn't care but after we were seated our waiter was good and they had a piano player which we all enjoyed.

Really like the Szechuan food here! Asian food in Memphis is not too great besides here and Asian palace. Over the years I think Mulan has turned into a more authentic restaurant instead of just catering the taste of Americans. My favorite dish here is the water boiled pickled fish and the eggplant. My parents throughly enjoy the spicy seasoned beef slices. I think for what Memphis has, this place is definitely one of the better ones. If you're in the mood for spicy Asian food, this place is a good pick!

I hear and read so many accolades for this place, but just don't get it. I've now dined in twice and gotten take-out twice. In all cases, the staff was very polite and attentive, but the food is just...bland. Not much seasoning at all. When folks write that "it's the best in town", it makes me wonder what is the limit of their Chinese food experience. Two stars for politeness, attentiveness, and clean restaurant, but that's all.

This place is one my favorite spots in Memphis! I've been coming here since 2006 and the food is consistently delicious. My favorite roll is their volcano roll (old style- they do it differently now days, and yes it's as delicious as it is different) with a side of pink sauce! The pink sauce is also really tasty when mixed into your fried rice. Mmmmm The bomb roll is HUGE!

I have to say that this is THE best Asian takeout experience I've had in Memphis, and I'm a native! At this moment I did not have transportation, and didn't want to just have pizza today. Although I had to order $20 for them to deliver plus $4 in gas. Honestly they've won me as a Customer, because of this! I called in asked questions about the menu. The woman was patient with me regarding my questions. The Delivery was express I did not have to wait the full 40 minutes. The order was precise, HOT!, Fresh, and the taste of everything was better than I've had previously! I ordered the Young Zhou Fried Rice, Wonton Soup(The clearest I've seen ever made), Shrimp Egg Fu Young (Not over done at all). I can not express Fresh Fresh Fresh! Wooow came to mind upon all that I tasted! And they have Sushi as well. I will drive and fellowship with friends there! Great job guys! Great job!

I've been going here since it opened, I love it that much!! Seriously the best sushi in town for an affordable price $5 for 8 rolls can't find a better deal then that. Plus their crab wontons are the best wontons I've ever had. They are perfectly balanced crab to cream cheese with a hint of garlic and are best when paired with the spicy shrimp roll. The staff is fantastic and if you don't feel like dining in, they have a fast take out service.

I live right down the road from this restaurant, therefore being able to order online very easily and then picking up the food is GREAT. The Ma Pa Tofu was also very good. However, I can only give them 3 stars because my hot and sour soup was SWEET! Ugh. Probably the best Chinese restaurant in Collierville though.

Do not order any tofu dish, this location uses store bought tofu. The tofu at the midtown location is made fresh. The other dishes seem similar.

Mulan has the closest to actual Chinese food in Memphis. Each time I go I miss working in Shanghai and Chengdu. The Diced Chicken with chillies is very good, as are the hot pots. While I usually like Midtown restaurants, the Collierville one with the piano player is my favorite of the two.

Food isn't bad here. We ordered spicy beef hot pot, tofu with seafood, and westlake beef soup. Everything seemed pretty authentic, but of course we ordered off of the authentic szechuan menu.

I have taken my family to this restaurant for several years. It has been one of my children's favorites. This all changed on our last visit, however, as my daughter found a roach in her portion of Beef & Brocolli. We showed it to the manager and he was extremely apologetic, but it doesn't change the fact that I will now always question the cleanliness of this restaurant. What a disappointment.

I've wanted to like this place but it's always just average. Portions seem huge and last meal was very salty. Friendly staff though.

This is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in the area. Unfortunately for me, they are in Collierville and I don't get out that way too often. But when in the area - this is my go-to spot for Chinese. They have over a hundred items on the menu which makes it crazy hard to decide what to order. But some of my suggestions would be as follows: Hot and Sour Soup Crab Wontons Spring Rolls Mulan Shrimp King Pao Chicken Walnut Chicken Those are my faves, but honestly, I've never had anything here I didn't really like. It's fresh food, never greasy and the service is wonderful. On, and as a side note, they have Karaoke most nights from 8 to midnight.

While most of the food items are good, so is the environment. But please take a closer look of your bill as they always add tips to your bill regardless how many guests in the party.

Both mulans in germantown and in midtown location are the best places to get chinese food in town, both authentic food and americanized! i am surprised to find out how mulan, unlike most chinese bistros in america advertising on their authenticity, promotes its Sichuan style of chinese cruise. Sichuan (spelled Szechuan in the once common Postal Romanization), is a style of Chinese cuisine originating in the Sichuan Province of southwestern China famed for bold flavors, particularly the pungency and spiciness resulting from liberal use of garlic and chili peppers, as well as the unique flavour of the Sichuan peppercorn ( huajiao) and Facing heaven pepper ( cháotianjiao). Peanuts, sesame paste and ginger are also prominent ingredients in this style.

Great place to eat when I lived in Memphi. Kinda miss it, though I live in the Bay Area now. I feel like it's one of the only notable Chinese restaurants in the Memphis Area.

I don't understand how people can rave about this place. The hot and sour soup we ordered was gummy and missing both the hot and the sour flavors. The shrimp in the shrimp lo mein tasted bad, and the lo mein itself was the worst I have ever had. We got a crunchy crab roll which was tasty, but I didn't like the strange pink sauce that came with it. Grand Buffet has far superior sauce for their sushi. My daughter is a General Tso expert and didn't like what they served. This is the second time we have tried Mulan and won't be back. China Garden on Riverdale has the best Chinese in Memphis. Unfortunately, I don't live that way anymore and have to make do with Yums. :(

Ordered something for take out and the order was wrong. Had sweet and sour chicken instead of sesame. The first time we called the staff was nice and offered to bring us the sesame chicken since we live right around the a corner. Then the manager called back and said that the chicken is the same and they would just send the sauce which is supposed to be cooked in a pan with the chicken to use as a dip. And to make it even worse after all of this, we got food poisoning from the chicken as well. Staff was nice, but will never eat here again.

best restaurant this side of the Mississippi! Try the Walnut Shrimp, Golden Sesame Chicken ... there is a reason that this restaurant is in the top 100. One of my favorite Dim Sum restaurants in Seattle is trying to get in so this is the real deal!

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
