I have to say that with all the variety and options for Mexican food, Poblano's definitely stood out. We are new to the area so we decided to give them a try. The location is in what I consider a nice area in Chattanooga right next to the river. The building isn't large but just big enough. Outdoor patio seating available. The interior was pleasant, not like most traditional mexican restaurants filled with exaggerated amounts of decor and loud playing merengue and bachata music (which isn't Mexican btw) The service was on point, and our server was very attentive, polite, and courteous (thanks Mckenzie). The food was just right in my opinion. I must say that for Chattanooga the prices are reasonable in my opinion (based on what others wrote about being overpriced). I respect restaurants that charge more, are less busy, but focus more on quality. The Mexican rice was probably the best I've had in some time, the poblano made to order and a huge one!! It looked like a big roasted chicken on my plate. We wrapped everything up and took it to go since there was leftovers and ordered a quesadilla which was also good. Topped it with the fresh poco de gallo. Overall great experience and look forward to another Poblano visit!

Very nice place in the North Shore area. Had to wait 15 mins for a server and the hostess set us there. We sit outside on the porch she was very nice pleasant evening and the food was outstanding

The masa on the tamales is way too thick, but the red sauce that's served with them is delicious. The burrito is good and big enough for two (comes with quest and pico). The tacos are fresh and delicious (pork and beer chicken). I'll give them another try but won't get the tamale again.

My boyfriend and I went here on a whim. We didn't want to do anything too crazy for Valentine's Day and were craving Mexican food. Let's just say, this place was awesome! I grew up in Texas so I have high expectations of Mexican food and this place exceeded it. He had the chicken torta sandwich and I had the zucchini entree. Both were mind blowing and delicious. If we are ever back in the area we will stop by again.

Have eaten here several times now and have enjoyed it each time. This last time we came in on a Saturday afternoon and we sat out on the patio as we brought the pooch with us. Service was great and they even brought water for the dog! While the chips are salsa are a great starter don't pass up the guacamole dip...always fresh and delicious!

I am so surprised by the positive reviews. The food was mediocre and the service was very slow. The place is half empty and it too 30 minutes to get 2 soft chicken tacos. Beans were warm, rice was not close. Very odd experience.

This place was pretty good and is worth a try as a lunch spot. I had the poblano burrito and my only complaint is that they could have made it look slightly more appealing (garnishes, maybe). The burrito itself was spicy, had a great sauce, and super flavorful mix of fillings. Pros: Good patio, good service. They had a yelp deal which was pretty great. The food itself all sounds phenomenal (although some of it falls short of description). Decent value, even without the deal. They also have some great specials around brunch time on the weekends. Cons: Guacamole wasn't very flavorful. The atmosphere seemed a little too much like a sports bar for me. They ran out of veggie tamales, which my girlfriend wanted, so she went with chicken tamales (which were dry). Overall: Good value, good porch, tasty flavors, but just felt a little off on the service and atmosphere. I'd definitely go back, though.

We had a server named Jesse who really took good care of us and was very personable. He suggested some vegetarian items for my wife, good kids meals for the girls and some suggestions for me. We all liked the thick cut chips and salsa and Jesse brought me a salsa verde which was very good. My wife had the vegetable tamales which she said were excellent and I agreed from the taste she gave me. My poblano fajitas were very good-I got them with the chorizo. What I couldn't finish was gladly finished by my eleven year old daughter. Tiger shrimp was an option for the fajitas that I bet would be super fantastic. I've been in no rush to try this place thinking there was only one vegetarian option for my wife. I'm so happy that she requested it today for her birthday meal when we were walking around the area. Jesse told us that most any of their items can be made vegetarian. I'm looking forward to going back.

Went with family and friends. For appetizers had good salsa & guacamole, and mediocre queso. Had a trio of enchiladas- chicken(ok), cheese(ok), and steak(good) - with sides of black beans(good) and corn(very good).

Enjoyed the steak burrito on the patio great service. Guacamole needs less salt but over all great food.

I was a bit skeptical of trying this place based on previous reviews but SO glad we went. Kids and I were playing in Coolidge Park and this was the closest Mexican food we could find to walk to. We went at 2:30pm, so had the place to ourselves. Our server was very sweet and took the time to offer up additional suggestions and entrees as I am a vegetarian. She was accommodating to my 2 kids and very hospitable as she made other recommendations for local dessert places and other kids activities in the area. The food was really good, too! I'm all about supporting local (non-chain) businesses and will gladly come back during future visits!

Excellent fresh made from scratch good. Incredible service too. Fair prices. A must go-to place while in Chattanooga!

Likes: Warm multi-layer chips, excellent entrees, great margs (although cocktails aren't listed on any menu), and sweet location one block from my abode. Dislikes: view off the expansive deck includes the apartment building that you would say has "a great personality" or is "really really funny". Clearly no fault of the restaurant, but if I'm searching for weaknesses, I'll reference that eyesore. We've been here several times now -- enough for me to confidently declare that Poblanos will be one of our regular haunts. One problem they are having is that no one knows they're there! I recommend they do some cross-promotion with athletic events in Coolidge Park, because going to Poblanos is doing yourself a favor. Imagine finishing a race and knowing that you are only steps from a flauta and a salted rim beverage... Another bennie: they were very smart and converted the deck into year-round seating with windows and full doors. There might be a little business that shifts from Taco Mamacita, but in all honesty, the two restaurants satisfy almost mutually exclusive joneses. Taco Mamacita is California-style Tex-mex whereas Poblanos is tex-Mex, capitalization intended. Give it a try -- you'll be back.

Good food and attentive service at lunch. Parking is nonexistent at the restaurant so you'll need to find a spot on the street. The bar appeared to be well stocked (though I did not have a cocktail, so I can't comment on quality). Overall, it was a pleasant experience. I would recommend it to friends and coworkers.

Small portions and over priced. Our food came and it was cool. We ordered the double fajita and they brought the same amount as a single order. No kids menu on Cinco de Mayo when all they have on kids menu is tacos or burritos. A lot of good Mexican restaurants around so I probably will not be back.

Yelp had a deal, so my boyfriend and I decided to give Poblanos a shot. We weren't disappointed. They had dollar mimosas on Sunday afternoon and homemade chips and salsa that kept coming. I originally wanted to try their veggie tamales, but they had run out, so I gave the chicken ones a shot. They were good, but I have had better. The chicken was a little dry and not as a fresh as some of the better tamales I've had. They also were lacking a little in taste. Boyfriend got the poblano burrito, which was delicious, however. Spicy and saucy and just yum all over. Service was quick and it wasn't crowded. Plus, there's outdoor patio seating, which was perfect for a nice Sunday afternoon.

The fresh ingredients and flavorful recipes would have been enough to bring us back again but it was the stellar service, provided by Teddy, that we can't stop telling people about. He was friendly, knowledgeable, attentive, quick, and gave wonderful recommendations. The shift manager, Rachel, stopped by a few times to make sure we were enjoying everything. A restaurant is only as good as the experience they provide their guests and we left Poblano's blown away its genuine service and fare. Things we loved: Ceviche Chips and salsa Grilled Fish taco special Rice and refried beans Steak fajitas (I added guac and sour cream for a nominal charge) Grilled veggie side (squash and zucchini) Side salad (this was way better than I expected. Romaine, tomato, cucumber, jicama, cotija cheese?, mango, and I got the mango vinaigrette). I loved how our food WASN'T swimming in oil and everything tasted fresh and full of flavor. The margaritas are made with either crushed ice or frozen and weren't overly sweet or acidic. I don't know if they are squeezing fresh lime for them but regardless they are much better than your standard margarita. We can't wait to go back! Thanks for a great experience, Poblano's!

Fantastic, fresh food...from the chips and salsa to the main dish. Had Mahi & Tiger Shrimp mixed fajitas...soooooo good!!!

My wife and I visited here by way of Groupon. We loved it! Homemade tortilla chips, authentic Mexican offerings (e.g., mole), good service. We went back the next day (Sunday) for brunch and it was very cheap and good. My wife ordered something she was less than thrilled with and the waitress immediately replaced it with the menu item she had ordered the day before and thoroughly enjoyed...again. Chattanooga has just a handfull of decent Mexican restaurants, but I put this on in the top three with Tacqueria Jalisco and Ovalles. Not the Tex Mex crap that you can get just about anywhere else in Chattanooga. Don't come here expecting $5 combo meals. Here's what we ordered and enjoyed: Mole Chicken tortilla soup Tres Amigos Guacamole Omelette with chorizo and peppers (brunch)

Alright, I love Mexican-inspired food. And I really wanted to love this place, but they wouldn't let me. I can overlook parking being a PITA because I'm a local. I get it. But what I don't understand is why on earth we were seated outside, in below 30 weather, when there wasn't another soul in the restaurant. Our group thought we'd stick it out because they have patio heaters. Our service was awful. When our waiter finally returned for our drink AND food orders, my teeth we chattering. We asked if we could be seated inside, he said "I'll see what I can do." When he finally returned, with food, it was cold! By this time my teeth were chattering and my appetite was nil. I can't even tell you what the food tasted like because I was too busy trying to stay warm. I'm a three-strikes kinda gal, but they hit all three in one visit.

The food was great! Almost reminded me of San Diego. I had chicken, shrimp and pork enchiladas the at were very tender. The service was good but slow. No one was there but we're had to wait extended periods of time for entrees and checks. Overall a 4 and would eat there again.

Although not authentic Mexican, the food was delicious and the service was even better. They accommodated our dietary requests of vegan and low carb/fat really well.

This is the place I always go to now due to their margaritas and ceviche. The margaritas don't have that overly sweet mix taste...they say they create their own mix and I believe them because it is refreshing and tasty. The chimichangas are large enough to share. I'm always looking for a new Mexican place where the food doesn't look like mush on a plate. This has satisfied that quest. Really love Poblano's and hope it does well. The patio is perfect for a view of Chattanooga, which is such a picturesque city.

"Nuevo Mexicano" food, and I don't mean the state. They put a contemporary spin on traditional dishes. There food is ver fresh and tasty. I hope their business grows because it is one only a few Mexican restaurants in Chattanooga that tries to be different. Keep an eye out for Groupon deals - the are priced up a bit.

Poblanos is the best Mexican Restaurant in Chattanooga. The food is always fresh, flavorful and beautifully plated. The prices are more than reasonable for the food quality. You will not be disappointed.

After a horrible experience at another nearby establishment attempting to get reservations we ended up going to Poblano's for dinner instead. First, the Bad: Poblano's parking is a frustrating experience. The lot directly next door cannot be parked in due to signage and threats of towing/booting. The other empty lots nearby are chained or gated preventing access to the public. You will be parking along the street and we ended up parking a block away. I recommend parking elsewhere and perhaps taking a nice stroll through the nearby parks. The Good: I had the Mole dish and it was a fantastic experience. Very dark rich and full of cocoa flavor. I also had one of their mixed drinks and the tequila was as smooth as butter. My date had the quesadilla which was tender and full of cheesy/chicken/avacado goodness. The shrimp cocktail appetizer was a little too sweet for our taste but the salsa cocktail went very well with our entrees. Their chips are also fresh, flaky and crisp. There was only 3 other tables while we were there and the waitress was attentive and checked on us frequently. The waitress was knowledgeable on the menu items and answered our questions accurately and confidently. Overall, I think this establishment is one of the premier dining experiences in Chattanooga. My date mentioned that the food here was truly authentic Mexican cuisine rather than the standard tex-mex "beans and rice" that you might get anywhere else. It is tucked away in the corner of this district and due to parking issues perhaps it has not been more widely discovered by diners yet. If your looking for an authentic Mexican cuisine experience in Chattanooga it is absolutely worth the stroll to Poblano's.

Poblanos is a good all around place for some Mexican/TexMex. The place has a laid back atmosphere - inside's pretty simple w/ chairs, high tables, a TV. They've got covered seating outside on a wooden deck with a view of the market st bridge and walking bridges, but you can't actually see the river/water below unfortunately. There isn't a private lot as far as I could see, only some nearby parallel parking, and then farther away paid parking for north shore. As far as the actual dining experince here - the service here has been great - nice friendly people - pretty attentive and helpful. Food's certainly worth the trip - Great chips n salsa First big recommendation is the Ceviche - it's a must order for those who like a fresh cool appetizer I also had an excellent soup here - a shrimp chowder kind of soup. The beef fajitas were very good (nicely seasoned, good portion size, nice vegetables/bell pepppers, pico, etc with it). Refried beans w/ the fajitas is recommended/good/standard fare I'd say. Thumbs up overall! Good luck on the parking my friends!

First visit ... Great chips ..cold beer....off to a good start. We had a variety of apps and entrées...burritos, tacos and shrimp cocktail were all great. A bit tucked away, but worth finding! PS ... Beats Taco Mamacita

Average fare dressed to impress. My girlfriend and I swung by for dinner. The first batch of chips and salsa was free, but ask for a refill and it'll cost extra. my girlfriend got a taco salad with tilapia ($12) and I got a steak with chimichurri sauce. I was very excited because the menu said "mexican corn". I was expecting corn on the cob with mayo, lime, chili powder, and queso fresca. What a letdown. I got boiled frozen corn that had diced tomatoes and parsley flakes.

Wow. Wish we had found this place sooner! The best salsa I've ever had. The the pork was perfect.

I saw this place when I was on lunch and said I was going there. My wife and I did that very thing. First off, the parking is kind of small but not bad since the restaurant isn't very big. So let me say, to put your name in you have to walk through a small eating area, so don't feel like you are walking in the back door. Okay! The food and service. The menu was a little out of date, meaning I ordered a Pepsi and they have coke and the quick menu items said they came with rice and beans and do not now. Soooooo saying that, the service was great and very friendly. The food was great, I had the tamales, one with chicken and the other with pork. Awesome, I could tell they were home made and my wife had the tacos *note* they are not hard shell. So in summary, I will be back!

Fresh and tasty dinner. Everything was house made, including the chips and salsa. Enjoyed the enchiladas and $! Street Taco. The deserts were great and drinks great. Service was very good. Enjoyed it and will go back.

This is probably one of the worse Chimichanga meals I have been served at a Mexican restaurant. The Chimichanga it self was good, but the trimmings were missing. For example there was no topping of avocado, sour cream or salad mix served with the meal. Additionally, they bring small containers of salsa requiring that we ask for more twice during our meal.

Delicious food!!! And my goodness those chips. I would go there for the chips and salsa alone.

Great Mexican food. Nice variety, decent price for the serving size and a fantastic place if you're a fan of chimichangas. Be prepared, the chimichanga is CHEESY but very tasty.

I am 22 years old and they refused to serve me a beer with my food because they couldn't figure out the correct date for when people turned 21, a year younger than me. It wouldn't have been a big deal but they even brought out a calculator and still could not do the math right. The chips are really good but food is over-priced for how good it actually is. Will never be back.

Wanted to love this place...just couldn't. Average service (several orders at the table were wrong), a little below average food, but a good outdoor seating space with football on the tv. So not a total loss. The owners seem like good people with a passion for their work, but Chattanooga offers much better Mexican food at a variety of locations.

    (2)
  • Stephanie T.

Margaritas are the bomb. The owners are originally from Santa Ana, in Southern California, so they know real Mexican food. This has some of the best Mexican food in town in a sort of more upscale setting. This isn't a taco stand, or Amigos-like. The tamales are great, and the red-wine braised beef is so delish!

  • Melissa F.

The menu looks amazing and I ordered the zucchini entre. It looked amazing but was so full of spice I could barely eat it. The service also very lacking. I was with a group of people who all said their food was amazing. I was disappointed the spice ruined my meal - I like spicy food but this literally made me ill and this entre was not marked HOT on the menu. Beware if you are sensitive to too much heat.

Good food, poor drink. Ordered the Burrito Poblano (jalapeño cream sauce burrito w/ pulled pork) for $8 for dinner. Delicious. You can get it filled with a variety of meats (pork, beef, chorizo, etc). I thought the portion of dinner was going to be too small, but turned out to be just enough because they provided plenty of what seemed to be home-made chips an& salsa, which were appetizing. Ordered a mango margarita (special) for $8 and husband ordered a blackberry one. They were more sweet than anything and tasted more like a nice smoothie. They provided other drinks on the menu ranging from $6± Overall, good experience.

Very good casual Mexican restaurant in the Coolidge Park area. Service is usually quite good -- friendly and attentive. They have indoor, screened porch, and outside patio dining. Excellent margaritas.

We went to Poblanos on 8/19 our first Restaurant when we arrived from California for our family vacation. Our server Holly gave us good service. She was new, it was her 3 day at work for what she said. She needs to learn the menu but I understand she is new. She helped by bringing the cook to explain about the Carne Chamuscada. Food was ok not authentic since my husband order Camarones a la Diabla( spicy shrimp), which in Mexico this plate is made with spicy sauce and does not include bell peppers, or onions in the mix. He order black beans, he got fried beans. My plate was Carne Chamuscada (I can say will be well done stake) with veggies. I tried it thinking it has a good taste to it. It was ok, is just stake. It has a sauce Chimichurri (which that sauce is from Argentina, not Mexican). My son's chicken chimichanga was ok he didn't liked the tortilla it was to thick, so he ate the inside only. The restaurant needs a lot of improvement. One thing we noticed the dishwasher comes to pick the plates ONLY. And the Owner or Manager comes to clean the rest of the tables and he as well is behind the small bar. This is not how a restaurant should run. The servers have to clean their tables in my opinion since they have no busboys. Since when we were there they hardly had 4 tables plus ours. Not busy at all to not clean and do something. I hope the owner or manager read this and do something about it.

Seriously the freshest Mexican food I've had in a long time. It's the closest authentic Mexican fare I've tasted since moving from from Los Angeles to Chattanooga! They have a great happy hour, awesome specials and super easy parking. If you haven't been here, you're missing out. The margaritas are handmade fresh everyday and are delicious!! They also have an app that gives you coupons and allows you to view the menu and order food. It's nice! This is Chattanooga's best kept secret.

Tasty lunch the other day when looking for an available place with a nice deck. Has some tasty Mexican classics along with a nice cold beer. Chips and salsa were good and the guacamole was fresh and delicious. Service was pleasant...nice lunch!

It is a standard Mexican place but over all pretty good. The salsa is a cut above the other places and everything we have gotten has been good. I like the pollo loco better than any other Cleveland place.

  • Melody B.

Great atmosphere! Small enough to feel intimate. And the music was not too loud so we could have a normal conversation without yelling over the music. Blood orange margarita which is seasonal was one of the best margaritas I've ever had (more sweet than sour). Everything was very flavorful! Especially the chicken tortilla soup and marinated meats like the braised beef brisket and pulled chicken. Very tender and made the entree extra tasty. I had the six dollar gordita. And despite the slim price tag, it lived up to its name. The masa pancake was over stuffed with ingredients. With the soup, margarita, chips and salsa, I could only finish half of the gordita which reheated very nicely the second day.

  • Nora C.

The food is ok, but expensive for a Mexican restaurant. The margaritas are expensive $7-9. The lack of tequila is masked by fancy infused liquor. The service is horrendous. Every time. After waiting over an hour and watching multiple tables receive their food first (we ordered before them) but then leave we asked our server about the ETA on our food. He told there were still 3 tickets before us (consensus is that he forgot to put in our order). He didn't bus the table during the meal, did not top up our water or refill the chips. When ordering as many drinks and food as we did, I really expected the service to be more attentive. This is now three for three an awful experience. There is no way the food will ever make up for the poor service.

AMAZING! First time there and so much better than Taco Mamacita! I hate that it took us so long to find it. Our server ASHLEY was phenomenal one the best servers in Chattanooga! The tamales are authentic and the best I have had. And the Margaritas, oh my the Margaritas are out if this world! The spicy one is awesome! Thank you for such a great experience.

Given...I've only been there once I'll say this is a great place to dine. Given...I ordered a steak quesadilla that was amazing AND and Patron Marguerita to accompany it....and it too was superb. Top that off with a BANGIN deck and atmosphere....makes for a good time. See you there! Oh yeah....the service was great.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
