The food was fabulous! But honestly it was so dark and loud in the place we could barely see or hear each other. Order the French Dip -- it was so juicy and tender the meat practically melted in your mouth.

I always get amazing service from Kevin and Travis whether seated at the bar or at a table. The food is consistently delicious and the staff always has a smile on their faces! I recommend this spot to anyone and everyone!

What can I say, J Alexander's is great! While on a business trip, my boss insisted we come here for dinner to get the club sandwich. As he said, "this is the BEST club sandwich that I have ever had." I don't know about you, but I don't want a club sandwich for dinner. Apparently, others feel the same way, as this item isn't even on the dinner menu. However, before I could speak, he ordered me the sandwich. Oh well, a sandwich will work just fine. So the club sandwich with a side of mac 'n cheese shows up at my table. WOW! That is not like any sandwich I have ever had before. The restaurant got quite, the world slowed down, and a southern baptist church choir started singing. Every bite seemed to be better then the last. The honey mustard sauce pulled all of the meats, and cheeses together in a way that can only be described through interpretive dance. To add to this decadent meal, was a side of crispy, creamy mac and cheese served in a crock. Between this, and the Everest size lump of slaw that we ordered, I was a happy man.

Last night while dining with a large group, we had a great dinner. Chattanooga does not have a great deal of good restaurants that could compete with larger cities, like Atlanta or Nashville, but this one comes about half way. The salmon dip with chips was so good. It was creamy and flavorful and the chips were crispy to perfection. Great appetizer. I chose, for my entree, the nightly special, swordfish with a lemon butter sauce and a side of Macaroni and Cheese. I am a MAC snob, and this place competes nicely with Mary Mac's in Atlanta. The mammoth chocolate cake/ice cream for dessert was shared nicely among five friends. It is a huge serving. If you're in town, think about this joint.

My last few hours in Chattanooga were spent here and I don't regret that :-). My party and I sat at the back bar and just happened to have to the BEST bartender I have ever come across ! TIM ! He MADE my trip ! Suuuuuper friendly and up beat. What a bar tender should be. He recommended something great on the menu. Fish of the day was Red Snapper with a side of Isreali Cous Cous.....So good! I also had the "smashed potatoes" I love love love this place. Tim was nice enough to honor my request of a special drink-The Dirty Girl Scout...Man I had one and a half of those and I was a NEW person :-) I LOVE TIM !

Have never had a bad meal here. The steaks are perfection, and I highly recommend the grilled asparagus and rattlesnake pasta. The only negative for me is the price, which has gone sky-high since Ruth's Chris came to Chattanooga. As a retiree on a fixed income, I will rarely eat here in future. But if you can afford it, the food and service and ambience are excellent.

Wow I had such a great time at this restaurant! I went to Chattanooga for a night and I made reservations for Saturday through my Yelp app based on the high ratings they received. We showed up and were seated shortly after we arrived. When we sat down we were greeted by a pleasant gentleman whose name escapes me. He gave us great suggestions on what to eat. As an appetizer we had the spinach and artichoke deep. It was super tasty and flavorful. Definitely an enjoyable experience. The chips were a little salty for my liking but my partner thought they were perfect. I ordered the City salad and it was the only thing I took a picture of because the setting was so dim and intimate that I didnt want to disturb people around me with the flash from my camera. Usually I dont really worry about that too much but I was trying to be classy and not ruin the mood LOL. The salad was sooo good. It came with romaine lettuce, bacon, blue cheese crumbles, eggs, croutons, and I beleive it was ranch dressing. I could have just stopped there but I ended up also getting the steak tacos (servers recommendation) with macoroni and cheese. Both of those things were very delicous as well. I couldnt even finish everything! My partner had the filet mignon and from what I heard, that was tender and flavorful as well. Overall, we were very pleased with the food and the service we received. I dont think anything was overpriced either. The bill came out to about $90 with 2 drinks. Not bad for a nice night out on the town. One last thing I will say is i thought I would need to dress up to go in there but overall the ambiance (at least on a Saturday night at this location) was pretty casual.

Romantic date setting with candle light, dim lighting and romantic decor. The prices are high I must warn, this is a fine dinning restaurant. Reason for 3 stars the food wasn't extremely amazing for the price it was. I had a steak and it was grilled in a way where I felt like I was eating the char and no seasoning to it. Would I come back... Nah. This is coming from someone whose travelled all over the world and ate many things. So wanna amaze a girl with typical fine American fine dining sure open ur wallet here.
(3)Greg A.
Great Ahi Tuna and wine selection!! Service was great. You have try the smoked salmon dip....awesome
(4)Frank A.
Awesome salad, burger, beans & rice. No complaints, definite return in the future! Great service too:)
(5)Rose L.
Must say was quite pleasantly surprised for a multitude of reasons. First where else but chattanooga and J Alexander's can you feed 10 from a work event for $300 plus tip! Yes some of us had a drink. Some had steaks. I mean wow. So I had the ahi tuna salad. Quite excellent. Perfectly rare as expected. Apps were queso and chips and flatbread pizzas. The queso is beyond amazing. Recommend to all Great atmosphere and food. Great service
(5)Yvonne K.
First time here not knowing what to expect. Nicer and more on the modern side than I expected. Cloth napkins and excellent service, if you ask where the restroom is they will escort you!!Went for lunch the food was very good but the portions are too large and pricy for lunch otherwise a 5 star! I ordered fish tacos it came with 3 at $16... I could only eat one and I have a healthy appetite, took the rest home, good but could have used more sauce.Husband had the cheese burger & fries...perfectly cooked to order, good size and very tasty.Shoe string fries piled high were good too. We only had iced tea for drinks and fresh glasses replaced without asking. I think if they cut there lunch portions and the prices I would be happier to go back for lunch and not feel like I needed to celebrate a special occasion!!!
(4)Matt G.
Management is rude. Does not resolve problems. Do not order to go, portion sizes absurdly small. I don't mind paying for quality, but I don't like getting ripped off either. Also, this place seems like it's supposed to be one of the nicer restaurants in the area and the atmosphere is fairly nice, but it doesn't seem like people treat it as such. We always get strange looks from people and then we realize we're usually the only ones that actually dressed appropriately (ie not wearing football sweater and cap) to go out to a "nice" restaurant. And last point, be prepared to get attitude and/or subpar treatment if you look the least bit young... As if you're not good enough or can't afford to eat at such an establishment. That's not to say that everyone here is rude, it's just a general attitude.
(1)Mark D.
Food portions were great. Throughly fulfilled by the prime rib. Died and went to heaven
(5)Debby B.
Best meals and best service ever at our favorite place tonight. Big Thank-you to our waitress and all the many people there who work so hard to make everything perfect for their customers
(5)Matt M.
I mean J Alexander's is pretty much the same in terms of food no matter where you go. Staff is pretty good. This location has 2 bars, one in the front, and a smaller one in back near the kitchen. Our server was Brian, and he is top notch. Very attentive, and takes care of you. If you go here ask for him. Otherwise, just what you'd expect from J Alexander's...
(5)Fred H.
Great costumer service!! We had a bit of a wait before our waitress greeted us. Partly because she was new and the other part was because she had a difficult table in her section beside us. Micheal the manager quickly noticed and offered his apologies. Not only did he stop by once, he went beyond by checking in several more times and even cleaning our table. To top it off he brought us our favorite desert on the house. Being a business owner myself I cherish establishments like this. Sometime you pay for what you get. J Alexander's has again earned a long time customer. Thanks Michael.
(5)Kwayne B.
My friend and I decided to take a trip to Chattanooga to sight see and grub. We were recommended by a massage therapist to eat here. The service was excellent, the ambience was cool, and the food was not as good as I expected. I had the prime rib with Mac and cheese. Our waiter, Paul, added bacon to the mac and cheese and it made it 10x better. The prime rib was cooked to medium well, but it looked more rare. I ate it because I was really hungry and it was an expensive dish. If I do go back, I will try something else.
(3)Shelby C.
This place just makes you feel high class. The food is impeccable. Their steak can't be beat, and you've got to try the salmon or you'll regret it. Service is lovely & always smiling. If you're in town, and wanting a hot date, check this place out. Hubby and I eat here whenever we drop into Chattanooga!
(5)Emily H.
LOVE this place. I always eat here whether in Chattanooga or out of town because I know I can count on consistency and great food. The rattlesnake pasta is to die for and the salads are expertly prepared. The vegetables are very fresh and I was told that they get them from a local farmer. All of my clients want to eat at J Alexander's when we go out to lunch.
(5)Kimmy N.
Whenever I first walked into this place...I absolutely wanted to throw up. Just the smell of raw cattle was not appealing at all, I am very sensitive and know it's a steakhouse but didn't think it would of been that strong. Beside that, my experience along with 12 other family members was noting but TOP NOTCH!!!! Our waitress went above and beyond! The food was phenomenal! I had the salmon and rice as a side. I'm not a huge rice fan but wow, thAts the best rice I've ever had at an American restaurant!!! The salmon was also good! My bf had the prime rib. Cook perfected and tasted very good too! We also had calamari which was good, and for dessert we had carrot cake and creme burlee. Both great! Everything was delicious here! We had nothing but great service and great food! We will deff. be back!
(5)Kristi R.
Holy moly! I can't remember when a meal was so delicious or when I have received service that was so incredible. Every single bite was delicious. For our appetizers we shared the deviled eggs and the smoked salmon spread. The rotisserie chicken and smashed potatoes had me about to burst but I somehow managed a generous sampling of the carrot cake and the chocolate cake. I left in a partial food coma feeling thankful that I had chosen elastic waistband pants. My new favorite restaurant!
(5)Mysti R.
I ate here twice. First time I had just a terrible look from everyone who worked here. They looked at me as if I was the not of age to drink, broke, college student. Let's get things right... I'm not some broke looking college student. I was there to get some damn good food and enjoy a few drinks. The bartender looked at me in such a dirty way and didn't even acknowledge me for service. I had to flag him down and ask him for a freaking drink. I sat at the bar to enjoy a couple of drinks and still he just looked at me as if I was the idiot. This is his job... to serve customers. Well, don't look at me like I'm not there seeing your expression. I'm there for a reason. Finally after asking him for a menu and a drink menu, which he resisted to give me, I finally got them. Service sucks soooo much here. Getting drinks is slow and ridiculous. It was like I had to just go back there and make it myself. NEVER have I ever had such a terrible time ordering anything. When ordering my dinner I asked what the crab cakes were made from, what kind of crab. The server just looked at me and said "jumbo lump crab." Clearly she isn't smart. The manager didn't even know what kind of crab meat they used. It was just so sad and ridiculous. Managers should know all ingredients in all their dishes.. EVERYTHING. That's part of the managers job, especially for those who have allergies. I finally got an answer by reading the container myself. It's a horrible way to even start the night such as so. I ordered the crab cakes just to give it a try. They were delicious!! Finally true crab cakes! They weren't over filled with bread crumbs or other fillers. It was mainly CRAB. Giant crab pieces and extremely flavorful. They were delicious. Drink was not great at all. I asked for something off their drink menu and the bartender pretty much just gave me the drink "sex on the beach" which I did not want that. I want something unique not something that a dirty club would give me. Bartender was just dumb and treated me terribly. I will forever hate that guy. 2nd time I dined here again the night after. I brought my co-worker with me and we had the crab cakes and the salmon. Crab cakes were delicious. Their mac and cheese was out of this world, crazy good. Salmon was over cooked and just pretty bland. We had some high expectations for this place with their food and overall experience. I would give this place a 2 star rating but the only reason why they're getting a 3 star is because the crab cakes and mac and cheese was good. SERVICE SUCKS HERE!! EXTREMELY BAD SERVICE. If I could give a rating for the service I would give them nothing. HORRIBLE SERVICE
(3)John G.
Way too expensive for what you get. $11 for a Moscow Mule? $19 for a French dip sandwich. 2 people; $100 meal(with tip). Last time I will be there.
(1)Bryan M.
Well unfortunately this will be a tough review. I went to get a steak or prime rib... waitress talked me into the fish selection of the day... salmon with the bam bam sauce. .. I was not impressed. It was not bad but wasnt good either. Service was standard nothing special... guess I expected more since a lot of people rave about this place. I ll go back again just to try a steak but I will not order fish again.
(3)Judy V.
I had the steak tacos and they were FABULOUS! Three large tacos! Husband had the cheeseburger and said it was really juicy! Love the French Fries. Friendly place! We will be back!

For some reason (partly fact-based and partly longtime reflexive habit), I have always considered J. Alexander's a watered down version of Houston's. That said, maybe that is just the two locations in Atlanta because Chattanooga's location is pretty close to top-notch for a small city without a lot of nice dining (especially by HP). Think Houston's menu (grilled artichokes, a Biltmore like sandwich - theirs is called the Hyde Park - steaks, fish of the day, etc). Add some southwestern touches - tacos, a spinach artichoke dip that also has jalapenos and onion in it - with a little Asian fusion thrown in . . . Wooden decor and accoutrements, mens-clubby atmosphere, two bars for comfortable dining. Lighting just dim enough where you feel cozy, romantic, or just pleasant, whatever your aim is, but you can still easily read your menus. Everything we had was excellent. Our server, John, was terrific - funny, knowledgeable and while there were some things we could tell where our tastes differed from his, he was spot on from start to finish. My parents and I ate there last night after some time at the mall, and enjoyed the fire grilled artichokes - not quite as tender as those I love at Houston's or at Brooklyn Cafe in Atlanta, but better than those at BrickTop's, another Houstons' spinoff/former employee started chain - then Dad got the Hyde Park and fries and Mom their Asian chicken salad. I had a filet with a baked potato (here, I have to say whether they copied Houston's exactly or not, that is my gold standard for a baked potato tied with NY Prime in Atlanta and it was perfect); my steak was supposed to be medium rare - it came with a quite charred outside and a rare center. After John and I conferred, he left me to enjoy my potato while having another filet prepared, butterflied, so we would avoid charring and undercooking. Parfait! Mgt came to deliver my new meat, and check on us. A-OK plus some for all three of us. Classy, welcoming, delicious. Three great ingredients for a lovely meal. [PS - For some reason, my parents intensely dislike me taking pictures of mine or anyone else's food and I was aiming to please them last night, so I have no digital info to share with you.]
(3)Richard E.
Great steaks. The Prime Rib Sandwich is my favorite for lunch! Although I am NOT a big dessert fan, they have the BEST Carrot Cake anywhere. Warm, fresh, and plenty to share with at least one other person. When my staff takes me out for bosses day or my birthday, J. Alexander's is my first choice.
(4)Saray S.
This is a great place to go on a special ocasion or on a date its pricey but its good their calamari appetizer is the best their steak and fries are so good and the prime rib is the best we have had here . We enjoyed so much go give them a try
(5)Julia S.
Visited this location while on vacation in Chattanooga. We always enjoy J Alexanders, but we had a particularly lovely experience here! We got into town kind of late, so we didn't get to the restaurant until about 8:30 (I think they close at 10 PM). I always feel kind of bad going into a restaurant that late, although I knew we wouldn't take too long to eat so as not to make it harder for the staff to begin closing. We were seated right away and our server was prompt bringing us drinks and taking our order. The ambience was lovely, very nice lighting and relaxing atmosphere, which was nice after a day on the road! The server was wonderful and attentive, he didn't make us feel rushed at all, even though we had come in kind of late! We ordered our usual, the half roasted chicken with "smashed potatoes" and a side of mac and cheese. The chicken was perfectly cooked and seasoned, and the potatoes and mac and cheese were delicious, as usual. They got the food out to us pretty quickly, so we were able to eat slowly (well, sort of slowly, we were starving!) and enjoy our meal. Overall just a great experience!
(5)Matt R.
Although it is a 90 minute drive from home, my wife and I have made the drive to eat here twice. The Hawaiian Rib-eye ($28), mashed potatoes, mac n cheese, and salads are all very good. The setting is large and very classy including two separate bar areas, but the attire is varied from casual to formal. While our kids prefer a Longhorn steak, this is our favorite steak place.
(5)Johnathan D.
I absolutely love this place the atmosphere is low lighting and I love it. It is the perfect spot for a romantic dinner. I had the filet mignone and it was so tender. I will definitely be coming back.
(4)Chris G.
Great place for a quiet dinner with friends or family. Good variety available making this a family favorite to re visit for special occasions. They used to have crescent rolls with drizzled honey and butter, but unfortunately stopped that practice about two years ago. This is the main reason we visit less often now, and why it failed to receive a higher rating. The rattlesnake pasta is a favorite, and in general the food is quite tasty. The salads are only adequate however.
(3)Don S.
The prime rib was fantastic !!
(5)Nancy H.
Went to J Alexander's as we were staying nearby overnight. After a 45 min wait on a Fri night, we were seated with great service but small appetite. Shared a delicious side salad (so good on chilled plates) and then shared delicious chicken soft tacos with rice and beans. Just the best for a very reasonable price. However we wish a glass of decent red wine in the bar wasn't $11. That is nearly $25 for 2 including tip, so we shared a glass. So we are rating a 4 when the food and service deserve a 5 rating.
(4)Kela W.
Best place to eat in Chattanooga. Large portions and the carrot cake is the best thing you will ever eat.
(5)Arun K.
Okay, I will likely get a lot of flak for this review, but I am a big boy. I was in Chattanooga for work and I went to this steakhouse and had shrimp tacos. I agree the choice was questionable, but if you're going to put something on the menu and charge $15 for it, it better be good. The tacos I received were nothing but a tortilla with fried shrimp (not grilled as the rest of the world and mexico uses for shrimp tacos) and a bunch of cabbage. Apparently it also came with Thai 'Bang Bang' sauce which is a weird name for the sugar syrup they gave me. Overall, I could not eat much of it and quickly quit forcing fried shrimp and raw cabbage down my throat. The best part here was the water. Why the two starts you may ask.. well I liked the service and the ambiance.
(2)Cat S.
This place never disappoints! Grilled artichokes...amazing gazpacho...MollyDooker wine. We couldn't be happier! Nothing more needs to be said!
(5)Mina C.
Great stakes and Orzo&Wild rice. I really wish they will make some Croissants again...
(5)Ron F.
I have literally been to this J Als hundreds of times over a 15 year period when I travel to Chattanooga on business. I always get the same thing - lunch cut of salmon, orzo rice, and Wente chardonnay. It is always excellent, and 90% of the servers are excellent, especially Kevin and Steven.
(5)Jaydrea L.
We love this place. The Maui steak is pure awesomeness. We usually get the crabcakes which are always good. I have also tried the salmon...bomb.com. oh and last time the ribs with some extra bbq sauce. I mean the place never disappoints on any dish. Great atonosohere with a team of waiters that makes sure you get great service. One of out favorite places.- Jay
(5)Mikee R.
I have been to several around the Eastern Time Zone. They are all just as good. Try the fish tacos and rotiserie chichen.
(5)April T.
J. Alexander's just doesn't serve inferior food! Everything is always top-notch, delicious, and the servers are delightful. Highly recommend J. Alexander's to friends and family.
(5)Rebecca R.
Never had a bad meal here. Portions are huge and quality is always top notch. For a chain restaurant they do everything right. I love their steaks for dinner but their club sandwich is fantastic for lunch with their homemade honey mustard. I am not usually a huge fan of carrot cake, but theirs is AMAZING!!!!
(5)Sarah B.
We are "regulars" at J. Alexander's in Franklin where we live, and in an odd coincidence have now visited this location twice in the past six months. Both trips were delicious. We loooooove the orzo salad, and their house salad is always perfect. We have always had great service at J.'s lcations (think we've been to five now around the South) and delicious entrees no matter what we select. This trip I tried the ribs that the hostess couldn't stop talking about, and they were exceptional. Hubby went for his favorite chicken tenders and they were hot and delicious. We had another exceptional server, Adam, who is one of those servers that will cut up with you if you appear game for such. He was hilarious but also attentive, and you can tell he loves his job. If you have not had their carrot cake, you are missing out. We got one to go, as we often do when we're treating ourselves, and enjoyed about an hour after our hearty dinner while watching the Olympics opening ceremony in the hotel. Our server knew that, and took the liberty of not only including disposable flatware, but also adding to go iced teas for us. Awww.... Their very best chocolate cake is also awesome if you're not a carrot fan. This location is larger than ours at home, so we were very pleased there was no wait at 6:20 on a Friday evening. What could be better?
(4)Santiago R.
Best. Food. Around.
(5)Tony H.
I always wanted to check this place out and it has a great look, from the outside. When we entered the restaurant the first thing I thought of was Houstons restaurants that I've been to in Atlanta, very similar decor, nice. The service was great our server was pleasant, attentive, but not hovering. My wife had a salmon dish with baked potato. She loved it! The portion was sufficient without being the normal huge monster portion. I had a salad with grilled chicken and it was great, lots of flavor, everything was fresh. The menu was priced right and there were a lot of options without overwhelming with 5 pages of everything under the sun. If you haven't been, check it out!
(4)Joe G.
The food was great. We had salmon and it was cooked to perfection. The service was nice. The one thing I could not stand was the noise. I have been to a lot of places and very few were as loud as this place. I could not carry on a conversation without almost yelling in my dates ear. I don't know what could be done about that but it would make me think twice about going there. The food..no problem..the noise was like a club.
(3)Lyndsay K.
Let me preface by saying that I am not one to send something back...ever. But steak is serious for me. And when my steak came out medium I had to send it back. I like mine red and barely dead, which is why I order medium rare...and as hungry as I was light pink just wasn't gonna do it for me. I was so pleased with how they handled it and my second steak was perfect and delicious. I appreciated that the manager brought it to me himself and checked back to make sure everything was ok. It was better than ok. One of the better chains I've been to.
(4)Melissa W.
I really love this placed. My family was in town for a competition, and decided to celebrate my mothers bday. Food, service, & atmosphere was great. Waitstaff was spot on and helpful. I will always stop by when I'm in town.
(5)Julie C.
Just recommended J Alexander to a Inbound Relocation Client. After a full day tour of Chattanoga looking for a nice home to lease, my incoming HR Manager seemed dishearted. Single and 50ish, where would she meet friends to socialize with? Coming from Virginia Beach, Suburbia was not for her. Downtown too expensive. When dropping her off back at the hotel near Hamilton Place Mall, I suggested she drive over to J Alexanders for Happy Hour and dinner, then meet the Locals. Ask other singles where she would be most happy living in Chattanooga. Sounds like I gave her the right advise. Who's Who, What's What's where to go, and where to live if you are new intown and looking for other Single and Social People. She said she would. Thanks J you do more than good food - you connect people.
(5)Jerry M.
Always excellent for lunch. Great service.
(5)Shardul S.
It's a chain restaurant...BUT...they are good. Very good. Steaks, wine, service, all of it. Very good. The carrot cake - bring it to me again. I will be here often...
(4)Erinn C.
The last time that my husband and I went, the restaurant was very classy. It had the appearance of what you might expect a much more fancy restaurant would have. The staff were excellent, the food was great, and in general the atmosphere was just wonderful. I don't think that they would have done anything more excellent with the place. We want to go back soon.
(5)Kyle B.
J Alexanders is known for their steaks... and they do have some great steaks! I ordered the special and it came out perfectly cooked and perfectly seasoned. In addition to my steak, I got a huge mound of smashed potatoes, which were also great! Be prepared to pay for this plate of perfection though. J Alexanders is *very* proud of their steaks and rightly so. The service was also excellent. The server was very personable and wasn't just a stiff taking orders and delivering food. He kept the drinks flowing and made sure our meal was perfect in every way. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for some great food, especially a great steak!

While in Town for business several co-workers and I were looking for a place to eat and decided on J Alexander's. When we walked in the place looked very clean and upscale. We were seated immediately. Our server came to our table very quickly and took our drink order right away. We ordered our meals and our salads came in a very reasonable amount of time. My salad came and it looked excellent. I don't believe I have ever had such a fresh salad ANYWHERE. It was perfect, although maybe just a tad bit too big. However it was a $5 salad so the size was probably appropriate for the $. I ordered the fire grilled salmon and it was outstanding. It was cooked to perfection and the seasoning was just right. There was a slight bite of spice too it, but not over the top. I had a baked potato which was good, although it's hard to mess up a baked potato. Several co-workers had the prime rib and also loved their meals. Another co-worker go the pork loin and said it was awesome. For dessert I went with the chocolate cake with ice cream. It was good, however the ice cream tasted a bit frost bitten and the cake had a slight odd after taste, almost like it was store with another type of food, but I couldn't place the odd flavor. I would give this place 4 1/2 stars, but it's only 4 or 5. Excellent place and I will defaintely go back here when in Town again.
(4)Scott M.
My wife and I had Easter dinner here and all I can say is WOW!! The best steak and salad I've had in years. Adam, our server was polite, attentive, and friendly. My wife had the prime rib and she loved it. The food and service were superb.
(5)Mark W.
Haven't been to JA for a while and it was refreshingly good return. We have dined at this local a couple of times driving to/from Atlanta. Convenient to I-75 and this local has the more traditional JA decor that we prefer. Waiter was excellent, attentive to our needs and always prompt and courteous. We enjoyed the spinach queso appetizer and chips, simple but done very well. Shared a JA House salad, cold and full of bits of everything. Don't forget to ask for the complimentary flaky croissants! I enjoyed one of the best Prime Ribs in a long time along with a baked potato. My wife wasn't as thrilled with her crab cakes but the Not Your Everyday Macaroni and Cheese was delicious even though it was so rich you couldn't eat an entire serving by yourself. This is what dining for upper middle-class (albeit at a 'chain') is all about. Fabulous food and good prices and knowledgeable staff.
(5)Gabe F.
Great restaurant. Food is great. The deserts are on another level. Why I go there...I usually don't like carrot cake, but the carrot cake here is probably the best thing I've ever had for desert.
(5)Steve S.
J. Alexander's is always good. I've never had a bad meal or service at J's. I had the prime rib with a baked potato and a bowl of clam chowder. All excellent. Atmosphere is lively and not too loud. Will not hesitate to return over and over.

When I want the best steak ever...I get the "steak maui" from J Al's....it's the best!! I just wish there was one where I live now!

Found this place by accident. We were driving back from Florida on Saturday night and needed to stop and eat. I didn't feel like fast-food, so we started trying different exits while passing through Chattanooga. The first exit looked like a Projects area, with empty gas stations and pawnshops. The second exit (over the ridge) was much more inviting. J. Alexander's has a WIDE variety of wines to choose from, but I didn't partake since we were planning to drive another hour or so after dinner. I ordered the Steak N Fries which was yum-my. The service was good. The atmosphere was dim and quiet. Service was pretty good... Who knows? If I wasn't half-dead from driving, I might have enjoyed it enough to scored this a 4.5 (possible?). Everyone at the table enjoyed their meal and were glad we'd made the stop/find.

This place was so great, we ate here twice in one week while in Chatt for business. The service was great, food fantastic. The housemade Ranch dressing was amazing and something as simple as a crouton was just delicious and made the salad. In a land of almost only chain restaurants (Hamilton), J. Alexander's was a pleasant surprise and worth every penny.
(5)Camp H.
Great food! Better than expected service!
(5)Julie B.
Mmmm. My husband and I had a wonderful meal here. Their by-the-glass wine list was robust and our waiter was very knowledgeable about the wines. My roast chicken with smashed potatoes and au jus was SO delicious. Juicy and flavorful. My only criticism is they don't include a vegetable as part of the entree.
(4)Doug D.
Excellent food. top notch service. I'd try it again in a heartbeat. I overheard a prospective diner say no place was worth an hour or so wait for a table, while we were waiting for a table. Well, I beg to differ. I think this place was worth it.
(4)Sherry M.
Great dinner...too much food to eat. Great service, I had the French bistro steak. So much reminded me of Paris. Love to come here when I come to Chattanooga.
(5)Jason Y.
A fine place to dine. I've never had a bad meal here. Oddly enough, my favorite item on either the lunch or dinner menu is the cheeseburger. The meat is fresh ground on the premises and can be ordered medium rare if you like. Then there's the shoestring fries. Outstanding.
(4)Next M.
Have eaten here three times, and it is awesome. I have eaten at all but one of the top 50 restaurants in the US and this restaurant, staff, service and food ranks extremely high for the price. Excellent food, reasonably priced, and service that is usually only at a much more expensive restaurant. Keep up the good work!

always good.

O M G ! We had dinner with friends the week between Christmas and New Years, and it was off-the-charts-GOOD! I had the prime rib sandwich and fries, and couldn't resist the Mac-n-Cheese (because it said on the menu that it wasn't your ordinary mac-n-cheese, so of course, I had to find out....). They were right. It was not ordinary....it WAS extraordinary. I would go back again JUST to get the mac-n-cheese. Now I am going to resist going on and on and on about that (although I could), and move on. The Prime rib was ordered rare, and delivered perfectly so. It was seasoned well, and cut so there was a bit of the carmelized outside as well, nestled in a beautiful baguette, served au jus (which was rich and flavorful), with some horseradish sauce (I prefer mine with just a bit more horseradish, but the flavor was excellent). The French Fries it came with were matchstick fries--my favorite, and yes, a little retro, but it was a very happy surprise for me! it apparently was a surprise to everyone else too, since we all shared them. I don't usually share fries, but I had ordered way more than enough food for me. Hubby ordered the Roast Chicken, which was seasoned spectacularly, with mashed potatoes which were a very good compliment to his dish. (He wasn't feeling inspired this night, but that is his fault, not J Alexander's). Friend and Friend's Hubby ordered the Grilled Salmon which comes with the Orzo and Wild Rice as a side, and both are magnificent in preparation, taste, and presentation! The salmon was cooked perfectly, and even had the perfect hash-marks from the grill. I had to ask my friends if it tasted as good as it looked because those marks were so perfect; it seemed impossible that it was not just airbrushed that way over raw fish, like they do for food pictures in magazines and advertisements (you know, the ones where the Big Mac looks like something you would actually want to eat....). But no, just by looking at their dish when they cut into the filet, I could tell that it was perfect in every way (and next time we go, that is the dish I am ordering; I have already decided!). The Orzo and Wild Rice that accompanies it was out of this world! Be warned--it is a cold dish. My Friend insisted that I try a bite, and any other time I have been surprised by a hot/cold reversal, the dish falls short of expectation, but THIS time, there was nothing that could have turned my taste-buds! It is that good. Although I didn't see anything claiming that this is one of J Alexander's signature dishes, it just has to be. The server was top notch. He was attentive, enthusiastic in a muted way (a very difficult balance to achieve!), and observant of our table's needs on a higher plane than I have experienced in much more expensive restaurants. Even though this is a "chain" restaurant, they do what they do SO well that I couldn't have had a better experience. I highly recommend! One note: the general review at the top here says the noise level is "average", but the night we were there (and yes, the restaurant was almost full capacity), the noise level would have been more accurately described as "flight deck during sorties". That said, I cannot give less than five stars anyway, and am looking forward to returning to this restaurant as soon as I can! It is a bit on the expensive side, but when you experience flawless service, presentation, taste, quality and quantity, J. Alexander's price point is quite reasonable!

Best ribeye ever! Maybe not as big, however, it was so fresh, juicy and tasty that I were amazed. The place is pretty quiet and the service was great! My advice is to take your order with the baked potato that was awesome!
(5)Bryan M.
(5)Janis J.
(4)Mysti R.
(1)Steve L.
(5)Tracey C.
(5)Leanne E.
(4)Duana M.

(5)Kela W.
Best place to eat in Chattanooga. Large portions and the carrot cake is the best thing you will ever eat.
(4)Carrie Neal W.
(5)Chris G.
(4)Arun K.
(5)Erika K.
The food was fabulous! But honestly it was so dark and loud in the place we could barely see or hear each other. Order the French Dip -- it was so juicy and tender the meat practically melted in your mouth.
(4)Jaclyn W.
I always get amazing service from Kevin and Travis whether seated at the bar or at a table. The food is consistently delicious and the staff always has a smile on their faces! I recommend this spot to anyone and everyone!
(5)Jerry M.
Always excellent for lunch. Great service.
(5)April T.
J. Alexander's just doesn't serve inferior food! Everything is always top-notch, delicious, and the servers are delightful. Highly recommend J. Alexander's to friends and family.
(5)Lyndsay K.

My wife and I had Easter dinner here and all I can say is WOW!! The best steak and salad I've had in years. Adam, our server was polite, attentive, and friendly. My wife had the prime rib and she loved it. The food and service were superb.

Great restaurant. Food is great. The deserts are on another level. Why I go there...I usually don't like carrot cake, but the carrot cake here is probably the best thing I've ever had for desert.

Excellent food. top notch service. I'd try it again in a heartbeat. I overheard a prospective diner say no place was worth an hour or so wait for a table, while we were waiting for a table. Well, I beg to differ. I think this place was worth it.

Great dinner...too much food to eat. Great service, I had the French bistro steak. So much reminded me of Paris. Love to come here when I come to Chattanooga.

A fine place to dine. I've never had a bad meal here. Oddly enough, my favorite item on either the lunch or dinner menu is the cheeseburger. The meat is fresh ground on the premises and can be ordered medium rare if you like. Then there's the shoestring fries. Outstanding.
