Passing through town and got carry out. Between all of the local pizza options, I'd be surprised if there was anything better around. Service was friendly and very fast. Facilities are unique for a pizza place and I could see dinning in a nice experience. Ordered "the usual suspects" salad and a "Scarborough Fair" pizza. Clean and fresh quality ingredients throughout. Very tasty. 4 out of 5 stars only because I've had better pizza over the years. Overall, was not disappointed and would love to try more of their different pizzas!

Easily the best pizza in the Black Hills, with friendly staff and a great beer selection. Yet, while the pizza cannot be praised highly enough, I often choose not to eat there for two reasons: 1. Not particularly kid friendly, at least if we're talking about smaller kids eating inside. Tight quarters, dark, etc. Your mileage may vary. 2. The inability to pay via credit card/cheque card is extremely frustrating... yes, they have an ATM inside, but why should I pay an extra $2.50 in ATM fees for the privilege of saving the owner some merchant fees? On several occasions I thought I was a brain surgeon and planned ahead by hitting my bank's ATM on the way... unfortunately, the bill was more than I'd thought and I STILL had to use the ATM. I wish the owner would realize that people would spend MORE money at this excellent restaurant if they didn't have to worry about how much cash they have on hand. Other than this reservation, this is an excellent choice for dinner in Spearfish.

Read the Yelp reviews and tried it out. Very nice dining room, almost too nice for a pizza parlor. Anyway, we ordered the "Heaven Sent" cheese bread and two pizzas. Everything was very cheesy and very delicious!! Service was very good as well.

Great pizza. We got the whole wheat crust & it was very light. We got a salad & it was really good as well. Really nice patio & friendly staff. They do not accept credit cards.

My brother and I were staying in Spearfish on a bike trip through the Badlands and Black Hills and wanted to eat someplace local, not a chain. We found Dough Trader by the good Yelp reviews and we were not disappointed. The pizza is delicious, a nice thin crust and I'm a huge fan of their sausage. We got the Luigi's Hidden Star and the King Leonidas, both good options. I was a little put off by the atmosphere inside the building - the outside patio is relaxed while inside it is warm, a little stuffy, and possibly the nicest decorated pizza place I've been to. It's just a little weird to me. I'm also not a fan of them not taking credit cards. If the owner doesn't want to pay the processing fees, then they should just raise the prices to build those fees in and assume everyone will pay buy card - this is 2015 after all. Overall, good dinner option - for the more relaxed (and cooler) feel, sit outside.

While looking for food in spearfish we stumbled across dough traders and were pleasantly surprised with the pizza. They only accept cash, but no near to fear because there is an ATM in the store. Definitely worth the stop!

After reading the reviews we couldn't wait to check it out. Unfortunately we found it about 95 degrees inside the restaurant. We stayed and ordered two pizzas. They brought the first in about 15 minutes and no one came back to check on us ever! After another 10 minutes or so we inquired as to the status of the second pizza. After checking the ticket, they said they missed it on the order and would make it right away. I asked for a coke and a refill on the waters. They refilled the waters but never brought the coke. We didn't make a scene or want to complain much. They did comp the 2nd pizza but they ruined our pizza nightm we took the second pizza to go. Disappointed with our visit to say the least.

The food is delicious, but it's too pricey for me. I'm from DC, and the pizza isn't even this expensive out there.

Great pizza and nice atmosphere. We had the "gentleman and scholar" and it was really good. Ingredients were fresh, and the wood fire crust was the perfect crispness. Prices were also pretty reasonable. Only Bummer, cash only. Had to pay a 3.00 fee to use their ATM.

Cheesy sourdough breadsticks were delicious. Pizzas (Mahalo, dancing with goats, and another) were great. Handmade and totally worth the wait, even if we were starving from our hike up Crow Peak!

Excellent pizza...the crust is awesome! A really unique atmosphere with a fireplace. Accentuated with some really tasty micro-brew!

Love this place! The pizzas are fantastic and made with farm fresh ingredients. The atmosphere is warm, cozy and romantic. If you are looking for a great pizza you simply cannot do any better than this in Spearfish!

Loved the pizza. Crust was great and not too hard. Small place but good atmosphere. They have good beers and good music playing. Best time we are in spearfish we will have to stop in!!

  • Brad S.

The pizza is fantastic. I would say in the top three pizza places in the hills. The only reason I held back a star is because it is a little on the pricey side.

We are never disappointed when we come here. Wonderful pizza and friendly employees. You can watch them make the pizzas too.

Took a chance on a local pizza resturant in Spearfish SD. As you enter, you find an upscale environment- stacked stone fireplace- granite bar- comfortable chairs and cool lighting. A very intimate feel. The pizza is excellent- thin crust, standard but excellent marinara and Alfredo sauces provide the base. Imaginative toppings- all made right there. The Americana included marinara, burger, standard things and pickles! Excellent. Dances with goats was tasty- Alfredo sauce, artichokes, Roma tomatoes- however some of the chicken was tough and chewy. A great glass of wine and local beer rounded out our meal. Will stop here again!

Their Betty Rizzo was a special for the night. It was incredible! If they have it, order that. Second favorite was The Sting, but I like jalapeños. If you like meat, you can't go wrong with The Jeffersonian.

Great pizza and good atmosphere on the way to Yellowstone as a family. The sourdough crust is super yummy.

It was okay... Hey I am in Spearfish and wanted pizza, it took care of what I needed. It was much better than Pizza Hut which was located a couple hundred yards away.

  • Casey T.

We ordered the Jeffersonian and the Toga party. Salad was big enough for two but had fresh greens and plenty of flavor. The pizza let me say was worth every penny and they could stand to raise the price for fresh ingredients and the perfect match of sauce and sourdough crust. Go here for excellent food

Excellent pizzas. We had the strawberry, reduced balsamic vinegar, mushroom and bacon pizza and it was the best pizza we ever had. Went back for a second one.

Dough Trader is without a doubt some of the best pizza I've eaten in my life. The key here is to be a little adventurous. Sure, the King Leonidas is all fine and good, but try the monthly specials, or my personal favorite, order a Bushido! The interesting pizzas is where Dough Trader truly shines.

If you think a pizza should be piping hot, cheesy, greasy, salty, bubbly, and delicious then this is the place for you! Great crust, quality cheese, delicious toppings, and fun atmosphere. You can sit inside (fireplace) or outside (fire pit). Friendly service and exceptionally clean establishment. Quickly becoming my favorite.

Some of the other reviews here may be overstating the case for this place just a bit. But we were extremely pleased to find a decent pizza place in this area. As I've mentioned in some other reviews, we were sick of steak, and as elitist as this sounds, a little scared of South Dakota Mexican food. So we decided to give this place a try based on the reviews. It was not the best pizza I've ever had. But it was pretty damn good pizza, made better in comparison to the rest of the food in the area. They have a lot of interesting ingredient combinations, which I'm a fan of, and they make their own sourdough...dough, which I am a fan of. The dough was really good, had a nice sourdough flavor, and the pizza was cooked to crispy perfection. We had the Dances with Goats, which is a bit of a Mediterranean-inspired pizza. It was very good, but something about it (the sauce? the lack of meaty artichoke hearts?) kept it from reaching the upper echelon of pizzas I've eaten. I've eat a lot of pizzas. The restaurant inside was a bit dark and hot and stuffy, so we ate outside on the nice patio area. The restaurant is off of the street a bit and so there's really no traffic to annoy you while you eat. They have a decent selection of microbrews on draft, including a few from the local brewery in town. Definitely come by if you're in the area. I have no doubt that this is the best pizza place for miles, it just might be a bit of a stretch to call it the best pizza place in the world. If we're back in Spearfish, I'll probably come get another pizza myself.

Stayed in Spearfish overnight and almost went to a chain pizzeria before checking yelp. Dough Traders was highly recommended and they lived up to the reviews. We ordered the King Leonidis . Pizza crust was fabulous, thin, airey, crispy and had a subtle sourdough flavor. The meats were spicy but not greasy. The marinara had the right sweetness and savory blend. What a terrific find on a cold and rainy night. Kudos to the staff.

We had great pizza and the service was also great. Our waitress (Natlie) was the best and she had some good food suggestion too.

Average Pizza, but the people out here probably feel that it doesn't get any better than this. It was decorated nice and was a lil dark and warm inside. They don't wait on you, which is not really a big deal but a lil odd. I mean, there are only 8 or 10 tables to eat anyway so its not like the hostess could not take your order and fill your drinks. I had my boys with me and they are not very adventourous so we ended up going with King Leonidas. Pepperoni and sausage. It was pretty decent, but the crust was a lil on the bland side. I don't mind that it was not chewy but it really did not have a taste. What I was a lil put off about was the selection of apps or sides. No cheesy bread, bread sticks, salad, etc. They had some artisan bread bowl with goat cheese. Really? That's it? So I got it, and the goat cheese was great but the bread was so strong of rosemary that my son actually asked me if I was trying to posion him with pine needles (9 years old and as fond of the huge stalks of rosemary as I was.) So, not a bad place if you are looking for something not Pizza Hut or Papa Johns, but if you are comparing this to great pizza you can't get in Spearfish you will be dissapointed.

Sometimes the holidays come and you're just not feelin' it, right? I mean, maybe you are recently unemployed (true) and you are back home, tryin' to feel like you fit in when you know you don't and never did (true), wishing that you could spend a bunch of money on gifts for friends and family without feeling guilty, but you can't because, you know, you were just involved in a hit and run while trying to walk across Colfax and you aren't sure how much those two CT scans will cost without health insurance (also true). To top it all off, it's a blistering high of -5ºF for days. And after you weigh all of these things, you realize that life is pretty desolate, pretty sad, pretty strange and difficult, right? So you put on your stretchy pants and you go to the Dough Trader, where everything can feel okay for awhile. Because you're putting so much hope into an eatery, you're probably afraid that any defect might send you over the edge. I mean, you're fragile right now (both inside and out, as those bruises across your face can attest to), so let me prepare you: 1. BRING CASH. This is a no credit card zone, people. They have an ATM that charges $3.00, though, if you need. 2. Sit where you want, but don't expect them to come to you when you're ready to order. My goal is to come here every time I'm back in South Dakota and they'll just -know- what I want and they'll bring it right to me. The staff is so friendly that I think this is not just plausible, but probable, too. Aim high in life, right? 3. It is sort of expensive. But the worth-it kind. A friend and I shared a 'Sister Marguerite' (half with pepperonis, half without - which we demolished, obviously), a soda and a beer and it was $20+ (pretty typical). I got a 'Sting' and a 'Veggies are for Lovers' to go afterwards and the bill for THAT was about $30 (a bit high for two medium-sized 'zas). You DO get what you pay for quality-wise, but unfortunately I would not be able to eat here every day of my life. 4. I wasn't really feelin' the refrigerated leftovers the day after (especially for the veggie one). Maybe try not to over-order. Kind of a small dining area, but it's a nice atmosphere - especially during the holidays. There's a fireplace, a nicely lit (real? I couldn't tell-it IS the Black Hills, though, Dough Trader; there's no excuse) Christmas tree, and a candle at each table to provide JUST enough light to show your face without highlighting the awkward bruising from your car accident. So, you know, you can still bring a date even if they aren't into your (hopefully temporarily) damaged above-the-neck goods. Maybe reconsider the stretchy pants, though (unless you really want to impress them, that is).

Recognized as one of the midwest's best pizzerias....the Dough Trader in Spearfish!

Loved it! Definitely a top ten in favorite pizza stops. We had the "meet me in Venice" appetizer and loved it. The patio was great for dining...very cool atmosphere.

It was great pizza. We arrived a little later in the evening and had good service at first but than it seemed they were eager to push us out the door. The staff sat and watched tv when the could have bussed the table next to us so we didn't have to look at dirty dishes. The pizza was that good that this can be overlooked.

What an awesome addition to Spearfish's food scene. Good pizza and a fun atmosphere. I think the addition of table service might ramp it up a bit but I enjoyed my visit and will go back.

Service and atmosphere is very quit and nice. Service was very good with limited help. Pizza was really amazing and being a pizza guy, this was very good pizza and the would put fresh PARM on it. Eat here it was worth it. Bring cash though.

Where ever I'm at, where ever I go, I'm always looking for thta great pizza place. I wish Dough Traders could be closer to Rapid City, I would be a very frequent customer. It does take a bit to understand whats going on when you go for the first time, and if you're not familar with Spearfish, it's a bit hard to find. All that being said, GREAT pizza, definitly in the top 10 of MY favorite places for a good slice, I've had most of the menu selections, and have never been dissapointed.

Big fan of "non-chain" restaurants so getting a local pizza joint is awesome! Crispy crust and fresh ingredients made a perfect pie!

I'm with Anne T. This may be the best pizza I've ever had. I live in Washington, DC and was out in the Black Hills for four days in October. Unfortunately, we discovered Dough Trader Pizza Company our last night in the area, but I'm confident we'd have eaten multiple dinners here had we discovered the place sooner. The interior is very homey and cozy, yet simultaneously provides an elegant atmosphere. This is not at all what we had expected, given that a neon "PIZZA" sign identifies the restaurant and it is located in what seemingly is a parking lot for neighboring bars (after eating at Dough Trader, stop in Sanford's Grub & Pub for a drink... it's worth it just to see the decor). Prices are extremely reasonable. The menu offers many options and the wine list complements it well. Even if you're not staying in Spearfish, be sure to check Dough Trader Pizza Company out - you won't regret it.

This may be the best pizza I have ever had. I'm a South Dakota native, so it's great to have something this great at home. I had a fall veggie pizza, which was so delicious, and to compensate for no meat we also got the King Leonidas: pepperoni and sausage. Delish! Make it a stop on your next trip to the Black Hills.

Outstanding, non-chain pizza. Cozy atmosphere. Outdoor seating available with outdoor firepit. A must stop if you're visiting the area.

I set out to find this wondrous place called Dough Pizza Trader Company. Fortunately, unlike Custer, I have GPS. It was easy to find and offered plenty of parking. Out front, there is an inviting dining deck back dropped by Lookout Mt. As I entered, my eyes adjusted to the soft light of the dining room. It's comfortable. Cozy. I sat at the bar overlooking the dining room. The witty menu offered savory options including classics with a twist and creative signature pies. I went for the Jeffersonian. That's right, a tribute to T.J. with all the fixin's! What I couldn't finish, I took with me. The next day it was just as good. I wish I had some now. Overall, a comfortable atmosphere, friendly service, great food, and reasonable pricing made for a great experience.

I'm NOT a native South Dakotan, and have had great pizza in Chicago, New York, San Francisco and elsewhere. This is a delightful place -- terrific staff, interesting pizza selections (and you can "design" your own), decent beer and wine selection. A nice cozy fire was going this evening, taking the edge off the chill outside. This is a terrific local place for pizza. Highest recommendation!
