I side-tripped to Pierre to see the state capitol building and it just happened to be around lunchtime when I left. Looked on the GPS for nearby restaurants and picked the first non-chain that looked interesting -- La Minestra. This is a downtown restaurant and does not have its own parking lot. I found a parking spot about a block away and there were plenty of other parking spaces available. I ordered the pizza slice and Caesar salad. The slice must have been a quarter of a whole pizza. Because of the size of the portion, I couldn't eat it New York style (folding it over) and it was hard to cut with a fork, so I wound up tearing it in two and eating it that way. The crust had a nice chewy texture to it. The sauce and the cheese were excellent.

Great authentic Italian options abound within a great atmosphere. Unique flavor offerings mixed with traditional greatness. Prompt, courteous staff that appears to really care about their guests. As an out of town visitor, I would happily return again down the road.

Very nice spot for lunch. We had the mushroom barley soup (Craig H., they were serving soup) and flatbread sandwich, and the pit ham sammich and rosemary fries. My wife enjoyed the soup and flatbread sandwich. I found the pit ham sandwich, which included egg and cheese, to be a bit salty, but it's ham, eh? The Rosemary fries were better than expected. Coffee was quite good! Service was friendly and energetic.

This is easily the best restaurant in Pierre, nothing else really comes close. Atmosphere is great, especially if you sit at one of the high tops in the entry way. Mark's Favorite is unreal; get anything with homemade Italian sausage and homemade pasta. Pizzas are New York style, and are wonderful. Steaks are second to none.

Fresh herbs and veggies. Homemade pasta. I wanted to lick my dish! The service was equally divine. I am a vegetarian and the chef made me a special dish -- so amazing! I will be back!

I grew up in Pierre but left when I was 18. I have dined at some outstanding restaurants in California, New York, Boston LA, and also Europe and Asia. That said, La Minestra is one of the best restaurants I have ever experienced anywhere and I make it a point to eat here at least once on every visit. Creative menu, fresh ingredients, great atmosphere and attentive staff. Mark has created a real gem in central South Dakota and if you get anywhere within 100 miles of Pierre you need to visit for lunch or dinner.

Had a nice diner and enjoyed a conversation with the owner. The sausage with wild mushrooms was good. The sausage had a little bite to it which I liked. I don't think the mushrooms were wild but it was flavorful. They brought Italian bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar for dipping prior to dinner. I'd definitely return. No parking lot but ample street parking is available.

Service was horrible, prices too high, and food mediocre. New Italian Restaurant in town am going to try. Too Bad.

I been here twice in one week. It was a good place for lunch. I had pasta both times and it tasted good. Busy place with pick your own seating. Waitress I had was very positive and always refilled my drink. Recommend this place if you like pasta or Italian.

Nice Italian place with more atmosphere than I expected. Friendly and helpful service. The food was really good, but not over the top. Will go back there mainly for the atmosphere. The pasta is cooked in chicken broth. If you are vegetarian request them to cook it in water; they will accommodate you.

This is my favorite restaurant in town. Waitstaff are always friendly, helpful and prompt. The cooking is scrumptious! Save room for dessert (but that may mean you need to eat only half of your meal because servings are mega!). I prefer to show up right at opening time when it's less busy.

Stopped here for lunch on our way through town on a road trip from MI. Excellent food & service. I had the pit ham sandwich which includes shaved ham, cheese, a fried egg & Dijon mustard, with the rosemary fries. One of the best sandwiches I've ever had. My boyfriend had the chicken cordon bleu ravioli- nice chunks of grilled chicken & sliced ham in a heavenly white cheese sauce with the ravioli. I also had a Caesar salad- a little heavy on the dressing, but very tasty. Service was great- enjoyed watching the cooks in the open kitchen. Would definitely recommend!

As the Cattleman's Club does steaks, this place does Italian. Locally owned and operated, La Minestra is definitely a bang for your buck. Although the place is spendy, as far as Pierre is concerned, it's worth every penny. Definitely worth checking out, if you're planning on being in the area.

I have eaten here once and ordered a pizza once. There is a reason I haven't been back. The pizza was good, but that's about it. The food was nothing special (I ordered the shrimp scampi) and I was really dissapointed because the actual restaurant seemed like a nice place. Next time I want a nice Italian meal I will cook it myself.

Came with my parents while on a "roots" trip. Possibly the best option in Pierre (we didn't get a chance to try anywhere else). First, La Minestra has no soup. I wonder if they know what "La Minestra" means... Second, flavor of everything we had was fine; portion sizes were insane. My dad had the eggplant Parmesan, which nominally was supposed to be on a bed of Penne, but in fact was on a bed of about a pound of Linguini, into which the eggplant ended up mooshing. I'm not sure why it was necessary to add a pound of pasta under the eggplant, tomato and cheese. Lots of cheese. I had the "Thai" chicken pasta. It was chicken sliced too-thinly and then overcooked, a few small pieces of broccoli, and then some sesame oil. One of two bites had a whiff of ginger, so I think there was probably some ginger in there. Again, about a pound of Linguine. At least the linguini was reasonably correctly cooked. If they'd had some sriracha or something it might have been a bit better. My mom ordered the "Matt's Favorite" which was describe as pasta with red peppers and tomato. When it arrived, it turned out that it was about as close to soup as "La Minestra" has to offfer. Very liquidy sauce which she said was not too bad of peppers and tomato, but the noodles that were soaking in it was so overcooked they were falling apart. Again, there was about a pound of pasta mooshing its way into the soupy sauce, way more than anyone could reasonably eat. All 3 dishes took an incredibly long time to arrive at the table; the restaurant was not especially busy. I suppose they needed the extra time to really boil the crap out of my mom's noodles and to really make sure my chicken was as dry as possible without burning it. I might go back if I were to return to Pierre some day, but only because by the time you reach Pierre, you've already eaten so much steak and pork on the road that the steakhouse in town seems less than appealing.

The staff was friendly. The food was super pricey. They must have changed their menu recently (the prices, not the items) because everything was about $5 more expensive than it was on the website. The pizza is enormous though, so splitting a pie between two or even three people is a good way to have an economical visit. The pre-dinner bread was cold and a few days old, and I personally get a bit annoyed when people bring me oil and vinegar without any Parmesan cheese. In conclusion: Decent, not great, probably not worth the price.

We stopped in here for lunch on my move to North Dakota from Colorado. When the place next door was closed for lunch, we gave this place a try. What a delight! As a vegetarian fearful of the meat-centric cuisine of the Midwest, I had the yummiest grilled veggie sandwich. My partner had some of their homemade sausage and it was incredible. The rosemary fries and bread were to die for. The service was fast and friendly and they let me use their wi-fi until closing. I'll be coming through Pierre several times a year and I plan on making this place a must-stop. I'm only withholding the fifth star until I try their dinners....

fantastic, fresh pasta from a real italian family. An unexpected delight. I will be a regular here while business keeps me coming back to South Dakota.

This place is a complete nightmare. Very rude and inexcusable behavior. I placed an order to go that included a couple of salads and a pizza. I wanted it delivered over the lunch hour. They called me several times to inform me they can deliver it, then they all again to say they cant, they call again to say they could deliver it at 11am...finally I tell them I will just pick it up. When I arrived they had given my pizza away to another order and they did not have any more dough. It was noon and i had called at 9:30am! I was fine with that and was on the phone with the person who requested the pizza to find out what they wanted to eat. Suddenly one of the owners walks up to me and rips up the bill and throws it on the bar in front of me. I was dumbfounded. I was never upset about the situation and to be completely honest I really didn't care. I just wanted to feed one of my customers. I asked the waiter for my bill for the food i had received. He talked with the lady who tore up my bill and they said everything was free. A month later I get my credit card statement and they charged me for the food I received. I called there today and inform them what had happen, and I get a call back from the owner yelling at me how I must need the money more then he does! He hangs up on me! If he would have given me time to explain i needed an itemized receipt for the food I received in order to expense it on my companies account we would be in great shape, But instead he hangs up on me! Nice customer service! I should have known better when they kept calling me over and over about a simple delivery.

La Minestra is my savior when I'm in town visiting family, one of the few places in town with good food for someone that doesn't eat red meat. Would this be a 5 star in a different (more urban with more choices) context? Maybe not but it would be a solid choice most anywhere.

I was pleasantly surprised with this restaurant. It was off of Main Street in the main drag of Pierre, SD. From the front, the restaurant looked a little shady. But the portions were good (my coworkers and I did family style) and the food was very good. I wasn't expecting much from this place but it was a'iight.

My first night in Pierre (I am here for work) brought me to La Minestra. This place came to me from several recommendations. I had just enjoyed a weekend in North Beach (San Francisco's Little Italy) before coming to Pierre. The exquisite tastes of the City were still on my mind. But, this place is good. Sure, Its a far shot from the best Italian I have enjoyed - even as recently as the night before my dinner here... but a little wine and light pasta did the trick. Plus, La Minestra seems to be a local hot spot.

Was in town for work recently, and had dinner/drinks here. Bartender was very friendly and recommended some other good spots. I had the greek chick pasta dish. Food was good, although a little more expensive than most other restaurants in the area. Probably one of the best places to dine in Pierre.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
