The Ultimate Conductor.... Yep, pretty good. Stacked super high. See pic. Nice seating out back on the tracks.

Cool building & ambiance, and great service. Sadly that's where it ended. Food just wasn't good. 4 of us and everyone's was mediocre & luke warm. Nothing special, very bland. But nice waitress & great service.

One of the worst restaurant meals I have ever had. My cod was over cooked on the outside and under in the middle. My waffle fries were severely overlooked. My wife had the Jack Daniels shrimp Alfredo. I am concerned I will never get this taste out of my mouth... Prior reviews state this restaurant is kid friendly, couldn't be further from the truth. They offer lighter portions but the servings are minuscule...

We were on a long road trip through Mitchell and decided to stop for some late night food. They were really great and went above and beyond to help us out. We had a steak and beer which at the end of a long road trip really hit the spot. I highly recommend this place as the management was superb and the food was also great!

Thanks Yelp for showing us this nice gem of a place! Great menu & impressive 26 beers on tap! Bailey was our server - she did great! My kids were filled easily and both my wife and I were impressed with our meals. I had the Jack Daniels breaded shrimp Pasta, and she had the Chimichanga. I also had the French onion soup, which was dark and maybe not the perfect bowl (I only finished half) but we devoured everything else!

Tons of beer on tap. Service is hit or miss depending on how busy it is. Food is not the best but have had worse. The atmosphere is cool with the whole depot feel. Trains pass from time to time as well. Good place for kids and groups. Great place to sit at the bar and enjoy some sports.

Found this place after a long drive. The engineer's steak and conductor sandwich were awesome! We ordered an appetizer called chislik (fried steak bits sprinkled with garlic powder) which were also great but I'd skip them if you're having either of the entrees we had as it is just too much meat. The service was great and the place looks pretty cool. Definitely recommend if you're in the area!

Cool, historic, family-friendly place. Although half bar, it is very nice for large groups and have a good selection on the menu. The Ruben was excellent! The onion rings were good also, but 4.50 to sub fries for them, a little steep I thought. They have a great beer selection on tap and although I'm not a beer drinker everyone else enjoyed it. All in all, it was a fun and friendly place to stop after the corn palace.

Very good! Jamaican Prime Rib Melt was awesome! Real good service and very nice atmosphere! I'll be back!

We loved the atmosphere and our server guessed a good dark beer for me. I ordered the special which was some weird nacho plate. The chips were stale, haven been fried earlier in the day, and were cold. For the price it was not great. I enjoyed my beer and lovely setting and the company I was with. He enjoyed his Angus burger but neither of us felt like it was our favorite.

I have to say I'm sincerely impressed. 25 YRS ITB. (In the biz) - After a long day traveling, we checked in at our hotel (review that later!) at just minutes before 10. The OTHER place was nice enough to tell us where we could possibly eat, since they were closing at 10 (in 5 min). They didn't mention this place. But I called JUST IN CASE. Chris was super polite. Said they'd wait for us to get there even though they were closing the kitchen in 5 minutes. We were 5 minutes away so we ran over there ASAP. FIRST-Excellent, warm, friendly welcome. SECOND- my margarita was PERFECT. Super picky, and Chris made it perfectly. Delicious! They have a great variety of beers on tap. Husband had the Angry Orchard Cider Beer. We ordered the spicy pepper balls(?). Fried pepper jack. Delicious. Served w ranch. Dinner was steak tips for me. Cooked mid rare, to perfection. He had the Depot Cut. Also cooked beautifully. THIRD- Service was warm, fun, friendly and never for a second did they make us feel like we should rush. The kitchen stayed open LATE FOR US! With NO WORRIES! LASTLY AND FOR THE OWNER- It is very hard to find employees who treat your establishment as if it were their very own. You have true gems with Chris and Alicia. They were equally smart, fun, funny, interesting, personable yet professional and accommodating. We could not be happier that we couldn't find a room in Sioux Falls and we will ONLY be staying in Mitchell when we come this way again. Thank you Chris and Alicia. So much! Made our whole long road-trippin' day!

Good stuff! Stopped passing thru and was very happy. Pepper Jack cubes were awesome. Had the French Dip which was as good as I've had anywhere. Great beer selection both on tap and in bottles. Check the place out if you get the chance ... you won't be disappointed!

Love their soups and burgers. My honey always gets the chislic. Great place for a bite and the building has great history in the town.

Excellent food!!!! Substituted the buffalo patty in the patty melt. French onion soup is fantastic! Great service!!!!

We were visiting from out of state. We all ordered fairly easy food to make. Everyone at our table got their sub-par food and had FINISHED it before they brought my turkey club sandwich. My husband ordered a steak and it had turned so they brought him a burger. After speaking with the manager and telling him I no longer wanted my food since it took well over an hour to get to me, he was very rude and wouldn't take it back nor would he take it off the check. We left the whole plate untouched at the table.

the soup was amazing. we were there twice, and I'd say all the food is good, but the soup is something you shouldn't miss. I had the avocado jalapeno soup
(5)Russell H.
Steak was not great. Didn't get a very historical feel from the building. Had plenty of beer on tap though. Waffle fries were good.

I sort of like the Depot. The problem though is the food is only okay. When I have gone there for drinks, it has been a good time. When I have gone there for eating, the food is just okay. The service is fine.

The last time I went here was when my hubby and I came here to get half priced wings. We literally sat there for 10 minutes to get our water, then after that no one even came to take our order for another 15 minutes. We just left and went to Culver's to have a hamburger. What a disappointment. We been here twice before and the service was decent. The wings are small and very heavy and greasy, not even worth half the price.

We rarely travel to Mitchell without going to the Depot- atmosphere is great, whether dressed up or down. Kids love it, softball teams, girls gymnastics...cheese soup is especially good. (I love the bloody Mary's). Full menu with appetizers, sandwiches, steaks, pastas. We love it!!!

We stopped in Mitchell on our way during a road trip. Ugh. They may have a great beer selection but they had bad service. The bartender was very sweet but our waitress was rude, brusque and made us feel unwelcome. The food was alright. Nothing to write home about. The Mac and cheese were out of a Kraft box and the fish sandwich was a seven day old frozen fish thrown in the fryer! Avoid this place.
(1)Tyler K.
There is nothing about this place that makes me want to yell from the roof tops. But there is something to be said for consistency. The food is never bad, the service always seems to be good, and the environment is ok. Don't go expecting a 5 star restaurant. Go expecting to not be disappointed and you will like this place just fine.
(4)LORI S.
I have actually been to the Depot two times and have had a great experience both time. They have a wonderful beer selection and very good food. They restaurant itself is in a very fun building and the service is good.

Great food! Especially the soups. Great Beer selection! Smoking is not an issue now as previously noted.

My husband and I had dinner here recently for the first time. Our neighbors had suggested we try it..... we had planned to eat at another Mitchell restaurant we'd been to a zillion times, and the idea of trying something new sounded appealing. Even though we saw some of the negative reviews on here, we still decided to give it a whirl! And I'm sure glad we did- we were very happy with our meal and the service, and will certainly come back in the future. We came on a weeknight, in the early evening.....it was not super busy and our server was friendly, attentive and right on top of our refills, etc. There is a HUGE beer selection, a few I hadn't seen since I moved out of a large city.... and there's also an interesting list of mixed drinks on the menu....our server was fairly knowledgeable about the beer, and she also gave us good suggestions for which mixed drink we might like to try, after we told her what kind of drinks we usually like. She suggested the "Whipped Captain" for me, made with Dr. Pepper instead of Coke, and it was absolutely delicious :) Food came out promptly and as we'd ordered it. Hubby got the ribs and he was happy with his meal. I ordered the ridiculously huge "Ultimate Conductor" sandwich- mostly because I'd been told it was enormous and I kinda wanted to see for myself. And yeah. It's enough food for three meals, but it's delicious, and it makes everyone turn and look as the server walks it through the dining room LOL. I couldn't even finish half, but brought the leftovers home and finished it for lunch the next day- still tasted great. Definitely an enjoyable experience, price was reasonable considering we both had a few drinks and I'd been served a sandwich larger than my head....we walked out spending about $60 with tip. Definitely worth it and we'll be back.

We had eaten at this old train station bar and grill before a couple of years ago and enjoyed it. After having it recommended again by the service manager at the local Chevy dealership, we went for lunch. It was terrific! I had the barbequed pork sandwich with waffle fries and both items were very good ($6.49, take that franchises!) Wifee had the philly cheese steak soup, which I would have to say was incredible. It was $4.50! Creamy, richly flavored and no doubt unhealthy mouth-smacking goodness. The waitress was charming, the place was clean and attractive. Definitely worth a try.

The Depot is located at the entrance of Main Street in Mitchell in the beautifully restored original train depot. The staff is always friendly, the choice of beers a wide array of tastes and the food is always fresh, hot and great! Try the daily specials- always thoughtful entrees . And my favorite is their spaghetti and the bloody marys are always just right. Overall, the staff, atmosphere, drinks and food beg you to linger.

The Depot was recommended to us while in town, so we gave it a shot. The food was decent (though a little skimpy). The best part of the meal, perhaps surprisingly, was the draft root beer, which was some of the best root beer I've ever had. If you're in the area, this is a good option without costing a ton of money.

Very fast and good service. Had the buffalo burger, very small for the price

It's important this review isn't filtered.... I stopped here for dinner with my family (4 of us) and had one of the worst dining experiences ever. Where do I start? We waited forever for a server to wait on us. They got my order wrong, but I just ate what they gave me because we waited so long. I ordered pork ribs, but I received either beef or buffalo. It was dry. The sauce was OK. Next, they switched servers on us. Our new server seemed OK at first, but then he stood at the table right next to ours blathering on and on about politics. His manner was horribly rude and totally ignorant. Next, I informed the server that the rolls they served (which must have come from some corner store) were moldy. After I mentioned it, he looked at them and said, "Oh, really?" and that was it. No apology or anything. He moved back to the other table and continued talking politics. The bill never came. We waited and waited... Finally, I just went up and asked for my check. I waited and the girl brought it to me. I sat down at a booth to make sure it was correct and to sign it. As I was walking up to the register to return the CC slip, I heard one guy murmur to another guy at the counter, "If you gotta look, you probably can't afford it." I just put the check down on the counter and didn't say a word and left. This was the worst place I've ever eaten - both the food and the service. I reserved my anger at that time because I was afraid of what I might say... I probably should have asked to talk to a manager, but I really don't see what good that would have done and didn't want to put up with any more ignorance from these bumpkins. I appreciate this opportunity to let others know what a horrible experience this was and I urge you to try a different restaurant if you are in Mitchell, South Dakota.

The serving sizes here are Midwestern huge. The "side" soup that came with my burger was a full sized bowl. The soup was "comfort" food--Tuscan potato, a little salty, heavy on the cream, OK on flavor, but nothing surprising. The "small portion" burger (1/3 lb instead of 1/2 lb for the regular size) was average. I ordered medium rare, and it was medium well; the veggie toppings (tomato and lettuce) seemed fresh. Prices were reasonable...I think it was $8 or so for the burger and side soup. So, overall, much better than fast food down the street, but not super fancy or unique.
(3)Richard F.
This place was just bad. My steak was so over cooked that it was nearly inedible; my wife's hamburger was a frozen patty and over cooked. Others at the table commented that it was a very poor place to eat. The service was merely okay. I cannot recommend this place to anyone.

Good pub & grill menu options. I chose the lime Cajun shrimp wrap, very good. I wasn't expecting deep fried shrimp but it was good - reminded me of a shrimp po boy in a tortilla wrap if that's possible. Travel companions had soup and sandwich combos. Good. Nice tap beer selection as well. I would go here again.

Had lunch here. Nice building, great beer selection, half pound burgers, decent salads. Service was fine. I would eat and drink here again.

In a hurry? Go somewhere else. A business owner on the main drag in Mitchell recommended The Depot to us as a good place for lunch. The decor is great, the food was average, the service was poor. A friendly waitress can help a customer overlook some shortcomings but an unfriendly one tends to open the critical eye. The place was not busy but still we sat for quite some time before the waitress finally stopped. Without a greeting, she asked what we wanted to drink then disappeared again for ten minutes. She plunked down the drinks, took the food order, and disappeared again for 20 minutes. We finally flagged her down to ask if it would be much longer. Ten minutes later the food finally arrived. I asked for the check, she brought it back, and that's the last we saw of her. I hope employers in Mitchell are okay with two-hour lunches. That's what it would take if you ate at The Depot.

Buffalo Burger was very good. Service was marginal. Smoke from smoking area infiltrates non-smoking area. Probably will try some other restaurant next time.

After spending 6 years coming to Mitchell for work, the Depot was one of my favorite spots to drop in and grab a bite. Dinners are fairly priced and lunches are tasty. Nothing memorable about the place, but I can say I never had a bad meal.
(3)Paul M.
Refurbished train depot is lovely building. Steaks are aged U.S. Choice, tender and flavorful. Full bar. Relaxed atmosphere. Inexpensive; $16 for 5 oz. beef tenderloin. We will go there again.
