My husband and I have been going here the last 7 yrs during the rally. Reservations are a must and we make them every year. Every year it gets harder and harder to get in. They are extremely inflexible. After a long ride with our companions we waited in the town of Deadwood (a ways off from our camp) for our reservations which i made a week before. The reservations clerk woman said she couldn't find me and didn't know what to tell me but she remembered speaking with me. Will NEVER eat there again.

Service is alway outstanding but there tips are at the mercy of the cooking staff. My family has eaten there three times, once last year for Christmas that was less than a present. I think Kevin Costner should take an interest in his investment and protect his name. I would rather pay three times the prices for his themed restaurant one floor down than one quarter the price they charger for the lackluster bland over priced food. Kevin try to pay the same prices for your food that you enjoy at restaurants elsewhere. I'm sure you'll agree, besides visiting your building would be VERY uplifting to your staff that is starving for your attention. Take responsibility.

Partner and I with four friends for dinner. Special ordered by two was the 14 oz ribeye. One thought it juicy and flavorful, the other thought tasty but a bit chewey. Two had Veal Marsala. Veal cooked perfectly but sauce (we both agreed) was quite salty. One had a salad which was fine. And one had the Filet Mignon which was outstanding. Melt in your mouth good. Deserts were excellent. Service very attentive without being intrusive. Water, soft drinks etc. Never went empty or had to be requested. Great ambiance. A little pricy, but nice evening with piano playing in background. BTW service was geared to our conversation, coming just at the right time.

This place over the years has been the highlight for us foodies during the Sturgis Rally. Start our trip with a few old fashions, great steak and service with this top notch 5 star resturant. July 2013 visit showed a great server but the entrees were a bad choice for us. We went with a dish the server suggested; which was the special. We all didn't enjoy this dish as much as their mouth watering steaks. We chalked it up to a bad choice of entree but still had a great time. Early dining time. July 2014 party of 2. This is a pre-rally crowd and the place is packed. Once seated it was 10 minutes to be acknowledged at our table before the server came over. She tapped her hand on the table and said sorry for the delay. 10 minutes later we were still waiting for them to take our drink order. Simply said this is unacceptable at a 5 star rating. Almost 2 hours till the entree came, and at best the steaks ($42 each) tasted cold and like a cheap store bought hunk of bad beef. Not only for us it was the whole place. Terrible. We couldn't help watching others tables to see if it was just us, but others complained of serve time and bad taste. Too bad Jake's you lost my business and time to re-access your delivery. Thank God we didn't bring our clients there. There are too many restaurants in the area that are good consistently to go to a place and pay top $ not to enjoy the meal. The 50% off of the meal was a nice gesture but the meal was worth the cost of the cheapest steakhouse I would have never gone too. Kevin to the rescue! Hurry before they lose it for you...

Sat at the bar. Bartender was not friendly or inviting. Quite awkward actually. Blt was typical, chicken salad was all iceburg, bleh. There are definitely better places to eat in Deadwood.

Everything here was great. The service, the wine, and the steaks. My husband thought they had one of the best ribeye steaks he's ever had.

I'm not going to mention his name. This restaurant should stand on its own terms, not forever known as you-know-who's restaurant. He's just the guy with the money and all those clothes in the display cases. He doesn't chop the lettuce in the salads or pour the Godiva liquor into all the girly drinks. If you have the option, which going by the other reviews you likely will, ask for a window seat. Don't worry about the memorabilia, you can still see that too. I ordered the steak, because if a restaurant in South Dakota can do anything right, it's steak. It was the best I'd had in the state. My aunt had the salad. She liked it, but would have liked something a little higher up the leafy totem pole than iceberg lettuce. My drink was stiffer than most girly drinks I've had, so kudos on that. ALRIGHT. You twisted my arm. I didn't realize Kevin Costner was in SO MANY MOVIES that I hadn't heard of before.

I am so disappointed. After hearing so much about this place, we decided we just had to try it. Apparently, Kevin Costner owns the establishment and many here gave it raving reviews. I heard it has 3 zagat stars; I give it a whopping 2 stars. I expected so much more and got so little in the food. The only reason they received a 2 and not a 1 is because the service was great and the location was unique (it is atop an old saloon). I ordered the "avocado and grapefruit salad." sounds like something made primarily with avocado and grapefruit right? Nope! What I received was a balsamic drenched spinach salad with what looked like dried cherries and measly bite size slices of avocado and grapefruit.

Wow. Over the past 15 years, one of the highlights of our annual SD trip is Jakes. Too bad we won't be back. The host and server were fine. It's not their fault the entrees were blah to terrible. My son and I ordered pasta. I had the Alfredo and my son had the ziti. The Alfredo was unremarkable. My son, a soldier recently back home after 7 months of training, is not a picky guy. He said he didn't like to complain but the ziti was bad. We switched plates as Alfredo is his favorite and he, like me was disappointed. He said something was missing but neither one of us could put our finger on what it needed. The ziti was AWFUL. The sauce tasted like a corked bottle of bad red wine and it was smothered SMOTHERED with red bell peppers. I tried one of the meatball which was not remarkable. What a disappointment! The waitress was ok and the host was a nice gentleman so that was the only saving grace of the evening. We did have a good laugh after and decide we at least had a good story to tell...

This was the first time we took our kids to a "fancy" place for dinner. They were in awe the entire meal which made it that much more fun. The artichoke hearts and Asiago appetizer was delicious and good sized. I had the buffalo steak and it melted in my mouth! My son had the Filet Mignon and it was by far the best thing any of us ordered! My husband had the prime rib special which he wasn't thrilled about but it was good. The most disappointing thing was my daughters cheese pizza off the kids menu. I'm not sure how to screw up cheese pizza, but they did it. She ate one tiny piece and didn't want the rest. The tomato soup was fantastic! The drinks were interesting with lots of unique options. Dinner for 4 came to $185 which I thought was a little high since two of the meals were off the kids menu. The best thing by far was the service. The guys that took care of us were fantastic! They joked around with us and our kids and really made the experience.

During our last night in Deadwood we decided to eat here after seeing it was the place to go for fine dining in Deadwood. Prior to coming here we visited the new Saloon No. 10 and had a few cocktails, then we gambled a bit at the Midnight Star which is the casino that Jake's is housed in and I had a few more cocktails...needless to say by the time we got up to dinner at around 9 I was ready to get some food in me. One thing that was a bit annoying, they insisted that we made reservations and when they ID'd us upon arriving in the casino and we let them know we were going to eat dinner there they asked again if we had reservations. We got up to the top floor where the restaurant is and the place is 1/3 full if at all..and we looked at one another and said, right we really needed those reservations. Anyhoo, we wanted a bottle of wine so I wanted to go with a Beaujolais which was around $25 and the waitress upsold us to another bottle that was $10 and I am not entirely sure that it was a better choice. We ordered our entrees, I got the duck and my bf got a buffalo wellington dish with foie gras on top of it. They had some decent sounding specials, but I wanted to also try the bacon risotto which came with the duck and I love duck. She then asked us what kind of salads we wanted so I went with the hearts of romaine and he went with the pancetta. It wasn't until after we got the bill that we realized salads weren't included and were 4 bucks apiece...it wasn't the price that bothered us it was the sneaky way that she went about getting that in. And we knew it was sneaky because he started to ask about it and even before he finished with the question the waitress said that salads aren't included but they reduced the price of all the entrees to make up for it...that isn't the point you shouldn't give the impression that something is included with your meal when it isn't, it detracts from your experience of the place and puts a sour taste in your mouth even if the food and service were phenomenal. End of my rant, the aforementioned salads were not that bad. I really enjoyed our entrees, my bf didnt realize he got a huge chunk of foie gras on top of his dish and took a bite out of it before he realized what it was. It all worked together well on his dish though. My duck was divine, it melted in my mouth and the bacon risotto was really good...but you put bacon in anything and it's pretty good. For dessert I wanted to try the creme brulee and it was pretty good from what I remember. I would have given this higher ratings because the food and service were excellent but there were a number of other factors that took away from the experience. Maybe if they dont set themselves up as being the place to go to for a great dining experience in Deadwood then I would have given it a higher rating, as it is now I couldn't recommend going here for the amount of money it is based on what you get.

Great food, wicked good service & great atmosphere! My wife had the duck and she pleaded for more! My Cajun seafood and pasta was awesome and made me want to dance with wolves... The only less than stellar moment was the dessert. But still 5 stars. Some nice surprise moments with sorbet and bonus casino tix Meal for two with drinks and shared dessert about 100 bucks. Thanks to Jake Mr. Costner and the team!!!

This restaurant is a great one. Not just for this area, but over all. Having recently moved to the area from a larger city when we tried Jakes we were pleasantly surprised, not only with the excellent and varied selection of local and international food, but also with the service provided. The wait staff here is well trained and cares about your experience. To top it off Jakes is located in Deadwood, SD a great little town for a weekend get away. Tip: We loved each course, but would suggest the local bison steak it's wonderful!

Well, I was looking for a good place to take my extended family for a nice dinner in Deadwood and decided to return to Jake's. Previously, Jake's had been an old favorite especially since my cousin worked there until a few years ago. Although the service was good, I've got to say this visit was really disappointing. Our party ordered one of the tombo tuna specials which was presented well and appeared to be cooked properly; one ordered salmon from the menu that was definitely overcooked and dry; then, I ordered rib eye steak special. I was trying to choose between the buffalo shank and the rib eye steak special of the day and decided, unfortunately, on the rib eye, ordered rare. It was served with garlic mashed potatoes, with a few caramelized onions with a reduced red wine sauce on the top. In a land with so much free range beef I was amazed my steak was tuff and lacking flavor, the reduced sauce seemed too heavy for the steak, plus the meat was cooked more toward the medium rare range than rare. Having grown up with a family owning and working a cattle ranch in the area for the past 100 + years I grew up tasting some amazing beef. This left much to be desired. We also ordered the butter lettuce salad presented with a few raspberries and the crème brûlée (a few more raspberries). The salad was fresh but heavy on the dressing and the dessert would have been better if the custard was cool and the melted sugar was hot, unfortunately, it had been prepared way in advance so it was all cold. The wine was good, albeit from California. Jake's has so much potential, it was once a great restaurant but, things have changed unfortunately for the worse. It surely would not survive, except for the name of its celebrity owner.

I really wanted to love this restaurant! I really did! It is owned by Kevin Costner and was in every single one of my travel books as the place to eat in South Dakota! It is a fancy, expensive restaurant so we had high hopes after eating terrible meals through the plains/west on our cross-country drive! I split the spinach salad with bloody mary dressing with my husband but neither of us could eat it- way too salty! It was probably the worst salad I've ever had. The artichoke dip was very tasty - hard to get that wrong, I think! I got the chicken piccata dish with ravioli. The ravioli were not great but the chicken was amazing! That is, until I got halfway through and ate RAW chicken! Yes, half of it was more than undercooked, it was raw. We called the server over and after explaining it, he laughed in my face. He said, "sorry this is awkward." Um, yeah. And it is going to be real awkward when I puke all over you! He comped both our entrees, which was a nice gesture but we still paid a bill of $60 for three mixed drinks and appetizers. Sorry Kevin Costner, but this is a major fail!!

We got the Artichoke hearts and Asiago, My husband isnt a fan of artichoke but he ate this and LOVED IT. It was the best I ve had anywhere. My husband got he Buffalo Wellington he said it was so tender and the sides for both our plates were amazing. I got the special, prime rib, never in my life have I had meat that was so tender it basically melted in my mouth. Service and cleanliness was 5 star, the setting and ambiance was so much fun and had great views of Main street.

My mother is from the area and had dined here before. She had made reservations based on her previous experience and we were not disappointed. This is one of the finest restaurants I have ever had the pleasure to dine in. The wine list is good, and the food is spectacular. The dishes rotate frequently, and there were several different dishes from the previous time my mother had been there only three months prior. I had the butcher's selection of the night, which was a Kobe (Local Kobe-Style) beef fillet. It was cooked perfectly was was one of the best prepared cuts of Kobe I have ever had. I also had the avocado and chicken salad, about which my only complaint is that the chicken was a little on the dry side. I usually have wine with a dinner so well appointed, but Jake's has an excellent selection of craft beers available in 750mL bottles and I could not resist (I'm from Portland, beer is a big deal for me). I went with the O'Dells Woodcut No. 2 and was blown away by the excellent quality of it. The server even knew enough about fine beers to bring a snifter for me. I was impressed with our server over all, she had a wonderful knowledge of the menu and wine/beer selections and made excellent recommendations for everyone in our party. Overall it was a wonderful dinner and I would definitely return if I find myself in the Deadwood area again.

In Deadwood, this is about the only place you can go for your anniversary. That being said, for us, it was a WONDERFUL experience. The customer service alone beats out anything that I've had in Los Angeles. Everyone was so gracious and caring. They showed genuine interest in how we enjoyed each course. They allowed us to bring in a bottle of Champagne from our wedding, without a corking fee. The food was FANTASTIC. The atmosphere was airy and ballroom-esqe. As far as the pricing goes, $110 covered hors d'oeuvres, dinner (husband had a steak, I had some sort of amazing chicken dish), and dessert. I consider that a bargain. I wouldn't expect an elegent establishment to have a name like "Jake's", but I was very impressed with the quality of care put into every detail of the entire evening. If we ever return to Deadwood, we WILL return to Jakes. (I'm marking dressy, but there is no dress code)

Two of us arrived at 8:40pm for a nice dinner. It was during Sturgis week and we had on letter jackets. Three tables appeared to be available. We were ignored for ten minutes while the hostess attended to other patrons. She walked passed us three times without acknowledging us. She then informed us they wouldn't be able to accomadate us. We indicated we could come back. We were told they close at 10 pm and it wouldn't work. The hostess was rude and short with us. We were looking for a good experience and were extremely disappointed.
