So pleasantly surprised to find this gem! 9 of us of varied ages and tastes came in for dinner at 7 PM. It was quite full so we had to split our party which was no problem. We frankly had minimal expectations considering we were in a small resort town. Our group was comprised of well travelled foodies. The blue cheese bruschetta started us off with a winner. Despite the full house we were waited on promptly. We ordered 8 different main dishes and every one met or exceeded expectations. Even the side salads were noteworthy. Desert? Amazing. So good I had to ask about the pastry chef as they had to have been made in house considering their freshness and uniqueness. Turns out he was from Minnesota was working for 6 weeks during high season. I want to move this guy to my hometown. Great food and good prompt friendly service. I'd be a regular if I lived here!!

I have eaten here several times over the past 5 years or so on my trips to Custer. The atmosphere is nice and staff has been always friendly and professional. I recommend their salmon. In addition, they have a nice selection of wine to choose from.

Very tasty GF options! This is a neat cafe' with some really cool dishes and good service. I enjoyed the Jamaican Chicken Fricassee; my partner enjoyed the pork with mango salsa - both were very good! I would happily stop here again and recommend it!

Nice atmosphere & awesome food! We had the Bison burger and open-faced wild sockeye salmon patty melt all served with a side salad with a balsamic vinaigrette. We also enjoyed the vegetarian noodle dish. Everything was fresh and tasty. Average cost per dish= $13.

Sat at the bar since it was crowded . Service was good. The Jamaican chicken Fricasee was awesome. It had some spiciness and a little bit of sweetness and was oh so tasty served with rice that complemented the dish. The Korean buffalo burger was cooked to perfection..medium rare and the sauce was not overwhelming.

Nice atmosphere, competent service and kid friendly. Among our group we had the quesadilla, the angel-hair pasta with lemon butter and the Thai pasta. Everyone enjoyed their meal. Nice wine and beer list as well. We enjoyed our time here!

Delicious perfectly prepared wild Alaska salmon! We ordered two different salmon dinners, Cajun pasta salmon and creamy risotto salmon - both were wonderful. We would give this restaurant five stars if it wasn't for the extremely loud atmosphere, we could hear everyone around us plus people at the table in the back of the restaurant. It didn't spoil our meal but it was difficult to hear each other occasionally. We also recommend the hostess take names when people are waiting, the couple that came in after us were seated first when the hostess got confused. The location on the Yelp map is not correct, the restaurant is located on the Main Street in Custer not on a side street.

Cute local business in downtown Custer. Very interesting decor.. I would recommend they invest in their decorating. They have a beautiful rock wall leaving no room for bar storage so it's crammed into a metro table. They have posters in cheap frames and laminate bar tops. The service was good and food was delivered timely. We ordered the Caesar salad with house made dressing (nothing spectacular), and the Pot Roast sandwich (kind of dry and nothing to get excited about) and the red potatoes which were ok. The side salad add on was HUGE and for $5. It was almost as big as the entree salad so that was great.

Probably a pretty nice restaurant in Custer, however the food was average. We had a pot roast sandwich with Halvarti cheese and horseradish mayo and roasted potato (ok), salmon filet open face sandwich with coleslaw (better) and a cheese pizza kids meal ( no complaints). The waitress we had was nice however some of the staff seemed to suffer tunnel vision were people needed things and they'd get passed by. I saw both a table & person at the bar not being waiting on & while it was lunch time, it wasn't crazy busy & they were staffed appropriately.

Picked up take out on an overnight stay in Custer while visiting Mt Rushmore. Cute place, seemed a bit more upscale than the surrounding eateries, which catered more towards fast food and family dining. Had a glass of wine and the hubby had a local beer while we waited for our order - good selection of both wines and beers. Ordered the Spanish Shrimp small plate, which was very good, although a bit heavy on the bleu cheese. But definitely a good choice. The mixed field green salad was phenomenal, although they forgot the grilled chicken I ordered on it. This was still my favorite out of the meal. The wild salmon with Parmesan risotto was a little disappointing though - well cooked but rather bland, and the risotto had no taste either. Overall, a nice place for dinner if you're in the area! We'd definitely return of we ever are passing that way again. PS- the website is out of date and the menu is rather different than what is currently posted online.

Wonderful. We had the salmon with risotto entree and pot roast sandwich. Service was fast. No microwave on site. mint chocolate cake and chocolate pudding (pots du creme)- yummy, yummy!

Very much enjoyed! Blue cheese walnut bruschetta was a delicious appetizer. Dakota Bison burger, Caesar salad and Cajun pasta were all delicious! Pot de creme and creme brulee were fantastic desserts! Highly recommended while visiting Custer!

We were visiting Custer for a family reunion and found the Sage Creek Grille to be the best restaurant in Custer (and beyond). The staff kindly accommodated our large group and our waitress, Jolene, helped to make our experience wonderful. The food was delicious and the ambiance delightful. The wine list provides excellent choices to accompany the creative variety of menu options. Highly recommended!

What a little gem! Wandered in here and were warmly welcomed by 4 different servers. Everyone was kind, quick and had a smile. Food was delicious, way above what our anticipation was. Wonderful stop!

Was so grateful to come across this place while visiting the Black Hills - finally some healthy meal options and inventive dishes. We had the angel hair pasta with shrimp - excellent flavor. The field greens salad with pecans, cranberries, mandarin oranges, goat cheese and the house-made poppy dressing was exactly the kind of healthy and tasty meal I was craving after days of heavy food (you can add chicken, shrimp, etc.). The kids had two kids meals - pasta with parmesan and butter and the kitchen obliged my request to add broccoli - together with the carrots and ranch, toast, and cookies this was such a value at $6 per kid's meals. Definitely recommend this place.

Excellent meal. The tomato zucchini bisque was so good! The service was great, and everything tasted very fresh.

Sage Creek Grille is an interesting duck in the town of Custer. It's very well regarded by the yelp crowd, but strangely seems to lean toward the silver haired. The decor is fairly sparse and feels a little country kitchen, but it's simple and clean. The menu is a little on the pricey side, but they offer high end dishes featuring locally raised buffalo meat. You can't go wrong with a buffalo dish. I ordered the burger, the misses got some buffalo pasta and were pleased with the meals. The burger seemed a little small, but i'm accustomed to half pound pub style burgers. No french fries, but the grilled red potatoes were aight. Drink selections were limited, the best looking beer on the menu was out :( Service was friendly and prompt. Overall, this place was solid, but just not my style. If you see something on the menu that intrigues you, give it a try. It definitely could be a place you enjoy, it just wasn't my style.

We have really enjoyed this restaurant both last year and this year. Food is freshly prepared and tasty. We've had several different dishes and have never been disappointed. Buffalo burgers are excellent as well. Menu does change so don't expect that an old favorite will still be on the menu.

Excellent meal each one of us had something different and it was prepared fresh and was excellent. Definitely will come back the lunch was the best we have had in Custer.

Winner! Good, healthy food cooked well. Beats the typical burger and fries joint. Wait staff excellent. Interesting artwork on walls showing before/after in area. Food cooked perfectly. Salmon was delicious and tasted fresh. Sweet potato soup great too.

Great Service, great food. Had the seared tuna and the tamali with pork..... Portions were perfect. Nothing wasted. Also got the kids chicken, not deep fried. Healthy vacation food. Worth the price but actually reasonable.

We were staying over near Hill City, and drove twice for dinner at Sage Creek (and tried another night but they were closed for July 4). At the lunch I found the Turkey Reuben so inspiring that I tried to recreate it at home: it's a savory mix of turkey and cheese and homemade 1000 island dressing. In the evening there's a pleasant vibe in the dining room, and the servers are friendly, hustling to take care of tourists and local diners. Entrees give you a choice between "real" dinner items - like a perfectly cooked salmon - or a selection of sandwiches (BBQ pork was also good). But it was the desserts that REALLY brought me back ... two nights in a row I had a chocolate torte that was just decadent. One night Chef included a cabernet sauvignon as part of the flavoring, while the second night I think it was port. Whatever ... they were delicious. I certainly was surprised by all the choices available

Stopped in for lunch while staying nearby. Overall, I would try again but I was not blown away by anything in particular. Decor is nice; some local flavor with visitor-friendly photos of before and after scenes in Custer and the Black Hills. Benches were chisel-detailed and gave it a nice touch. Almost empty when we arrived. Service was friendly but after seating it was unreasonably slow; not sure if wait staff was new or just busy. Food time was significantly slower than expected for a few salads, chili and a sandwich. That being said, it was tasty. Reuben had cole slaw and catalina - a little strange but it was good. I wish the turkey portion were a little bigger for the price ($10ish). The watermelon tea didn't have much distinction from regular tea, but it was the same price so I think that's a wash. Others I was with got the buffalo marinated salad. Its a chicken breast salad with bleu cheese and with buffalo sauce on the chicken. Unremarkable but the portion size was good. Bison chili was reasonable, but seemed underseasoned and came out warm.

  • Chrome Grille E.

3 stars for the food 1 star for the service. I had the chili which was excellent except for the fact that it was barely warm. I told them and they were apologetic but if this were my place I would have comp'd the patron a drink or dessert for having to wait while they warmed it up. My partner had the chick pea and barley burger described as average tasting nothing special. We split the carrot cake for dessert which would have been better without the powdered sugar they lumped on top of it.

  • Lucinda H.

Overlooked chicken, undercooked medium rare steak, the wrong wine and hard black beans in the chili. Way too pricey. Eat at the Bakery and go to the Purple Pie Place for dessert.

  • Crysta W.

Blonde grilled Cheese was very veey good. Fresh salad with balsamic vinaigrette. Buffalo black bean chili was really tasty. I think there was a hint of cinnamon

Very good salad and sandwiches! Try the poppy seed vinaigrette. Very enjoyable. Food surprisingly good.

Arrived 10 minutes before closing. The friendly staff welcomed us and gave us great advice on which dishes to choose. I had a pork medallions over polenta dish that was amazing and delicious and worlds apart from anything else we've eaten in the area. My companion had a bison burger that was very tasty. Nice beer selection, excellent salads, great service, nice atmosphere. Highly recommended.

I don't know if it was because we were really hungry or just tired of fast food, but this place really hit the spot on our way to Mt. Rushmore. Salmon sandwich was amazing--even the next morning. The tangy sauce just oozed with flavor. The Turkey Reuben was decent. I guess it was as good as a Reuben can be when it's made out of turkey. The wait staff was incredibly nice. Would stop here again if anywhere near South Dakota.

When traveling we try to eat at local establishments. We also wanted something fresh, nothing fried. We found it at Sage Creek Grille. It's a small place. The atmosphere is just ok. It seems like it could have a lot more personality. It's almost like they just moved in. The menu was great!!! Not huge, but a good selection. I wasn't thrilled with the kid menu, I think there were three choices. The service was good until the place filled up then our server was a scattered mess. Also, all of their drinks come in a can. I prefer free refills on soda if I'm paying 2.50 for a can. If you go, order the artichoke dip. The bison burger was good as was the chicken sandwich and potato salad. Give this place a try, you'll be happy you did.

Just stopped in for lunch after driving thru Custer State Park. I had a Turkey Bacon Avacado sandwich with a side salad and garlic parmesan dressing. For dessert we shared a peanut butter pot-de-care me and it was delicious. The others in our small group (4 with one child) also thoroughly enjoyed their meals. I would highly recommend to anyone in the area.

I had the pan crusted Canadian Walleye. Very good. A little rich for my liking, but it was well prepared. My husband had a delicious steak. We shared bison chili for an appetizer. It was amazing! It was very simple, no "fixin's" (cheese, onions, sour cream). Just bison and special spices.

  • Greg S.

Spinach artichoke dip: A bit oily but still tasty. Worth ordering. House salad: Homemade vinaigrette dressings were excellent. Buffalo burgers: Asked for medium-well and received very well done/extra crispy and dry. Very disappointed unfortunately. Grilled potatoes: Could have had just these for dinner and been satisfied. Seasoned and grilled to perfection. Couldn't have been better. Family ambiance. Simple. Would definitely give this place another shot if I were in the area.

I think most of the reviewers were allowed to enter the restaurant and have the food as the waitress did not even allow us (a party of 6) in to the restaurant and asked to come back after 1 hour even though there were a lot of vacant spots. It looked like she had a strong dislike for our skin color and her tone was very rude and sounded racist. I was shocked that a tourist location had that kind of attitude towards people of color. I would have given 0 stars if yelp gave me a choice.

  • Jason N.

The Buffalo Chicken sandwich with herbed, grilled potatoes was great. I couldn't taste the buffalo sauce or blue cheese. However, the contrast between the red onion and cucumber was the perfect contrast. My only complaint is that a canned Coke was $2.50. I needed a refill so I paid $5 for my drinks alone. That's ridiculous!

Delicious walleye! Pesto chicken and Asian noodle dishes were just adequate, but we really appreciated the range of choices on the menu. Good service.

(July 2013) Staff was friendly, but took a while to get seated. Menu is limited, so definitely check out the one in the window first to see of something catches your eye. Food was okay. White Russian Tiramisu was amazing!

We went there based on the positive reviews, and let me tell you how wrong they were. If you want frozen mixed vegetables. If you want under-roasted potatoes. If you want dry-as-a-dinosaur bone salmon. If you want unseasoned, over-cooked, over-priced sirloin. Limp romaine. Un-ripened tomatoes. Pretty good house-made dressings. Decent prices on decent bottles of wine. If this fancies your tastes, then by all means. The inside of the restaurant is attractive, but it's a set up. I expect frozen, ocean-going fish in South Dakota, but I don't expect a pre-cut hunk of bad beef. The salmon was $22 and the sirloin was $28, I believe. They got us for $5 on a limp-leafed side salad. All of these were fine until the entrees arrived. They were both terrible, and I do like giving places the benefit of the doubt. This experience, though, has made me create my own Yelp account, so I hope that tells you something. Taste coupled with price made me lose it. We expressed our distaste for the salmon to our waitress, who appologetically offered to take it off our check and or cook another. We opted for the first. I couldn't bring myself to say how bad BOTH dishes were. We drank our bottle of wine, chewed through the sirloin, tipped her out, and still left feeling swindled. Save your money, please. Go to the State Game lodge or eat burgers all weekend at the Burger & Bun--by far the best experience.

Best food for many miles. If you are visiting Windcave, Custer park or Mt. Rushmore it is well worth the trip to town. My friend and I had soup and sandwiches and everyting was very tasty. This place is as good as the rest of the restaurants in the area are bad. I'm amazed at the poor quality of most of the restaurant foods available between the cities of Hot Springs and Custer. They have lots of photos and books around on the history of the area to look to kill some time.

Loved the walleye! My husband had a steak and did not care for the marinade although it was cooked correctly and was tender. He had them leave off the blue cheese as he doesn't care for the taste. The veggies we got were fresh and well cooked and the potatoes were excellent. Service was friendly. My husband accidently left his credit card and they called our card company immediately to let them know to put a hold on the card, we really appreciated how the restaurant handled the situation and when we returned the next day (before they even opened) they opened the door and returned to card.

This restaurant was recommended to us by a bartender in town. I am so glad we listened. The best food in Custer! YUMMY! We started with a salad, the poppy seed dressing was so good! I had the Parmesan crusted Walleye, what a treat! My date had the olive oil and garlic penne with chicken, also very good. Everything was fresh, and flavorful!

Sage Creek Grille is top notch, and not just for the small tourist town of Brandon, South Dakota. My mom and I went for dinner on a Tuesday evening while in town on a road trip. The interior is simple but classy, and features work from local artists. We were seated right away and greeted by a friendly server. The menu had tons of incredible options. We started with a blue cheese and walnut bruschetta and glasses of Riesling. The bruschetta came out quickly and we had a generous portion of six pieces of bread with plenty of delicious cheese melted on top. For dinner, there were so many options, even for my mom, who is a vegetarian. We both decided to go with salads. My mother had a salad with pecans and cranberries which she happily devoured. I had a salad with buffalo chicken (warm and fresh from the kitchen), bacon, and more blue cheese. Both salads also had homemade dressings and high-quality dark leafy greens. We thought we had no room for dessert until our server told us that there was a pastry chef on staff who made fresh desserts daily. I am not a huge fan of desserts, but I got the Kahlua tiramisu by the waiter's recommendation. It was served in a tiny crystal mug with a Kahlua-soaked cake at the bottom and topped with a rich coffee-flavored cream. It was incredible-- very rich, and a perfect portion size as not to be too decadent. (By the way, the waiter also noted that this dessert was for those of legal drinking age only due to the high Kahlua content.) My mom had a chocolate pot de creme which perfectly satisfied her chocolate craving. The only drawback to this restaurant was the fact that there were some flies circling us during the meal. However, the food and service were so excellent that we barely noticed. We had a much-needed decadent meal during a long road trip and it was a pleasant surprise for such a small town. If you want a high-quality meal that is well-priced with delicious ingredients, stop by Sage Creek Grille.

I've only eaten here twice, both times I ordered the pulled pork sandwich. It was excellent, twice. Service was friendly, atmosphere was upscale clean. Call ahead, as they don't believe in fast food. A bit pricey.

Sage Grill (as it's often called by the locals instead of the full-out Sage Creek Grill) was recommended by the lovely hotel owner of Calamity Peak Lodges. It was on my top Yelp Trys for my Wild West trip, and for a good reason. While I was strolling the paths of the Gold Rush, Custer's glam with small town feel won me over, however, Custer wouldn't be what it is to me without Sage Grill. Sage Grill is partially a wine bar with a great selection, but I gotta complain that it creates a tiny bit of disappointment that they had no local selections. All those rolling Black Hills and no vineyards?! I got over it quickly because as I enjoyed the debated decor which I found quite pleasant and as wonderfully simplistic as the menu which changes weekly and/or very often. Prices are a bit steep and unexpected ranging between $15-22 a dinner entree but once it's served the fresh flavors allow you to forget about your shrinking wallet. One tourist warned me to avoid fish at all costs while in South Dakota (mind you, this was coming from someone who lives in sea-side Seattle), but Sage Grill turned that upside with their Pistachio Encrusted Halibut with a Wasabi creme. Gosh was it perfectly crisp and full of flavor. My partner ordered the Buffalo Country Fried Steak with gravy. When in South Dakota...you guessed it, can't go wrong with Bison anything. If I'm ever in the area again I will go out of my destinations way to pay another visit.

I was out in the Black Hills on vacation and had heard that Sage Creek Grill has good food. So one evening, I stopped in for dinner. Since I've had a history with gout (can't eat meat), I opted for the egg, bacon sandwich. It was pretty decent. I'd rather have a steak or something though. I had a bite of pork chops and sauerkraut that my gf ordered. That was delicious! I had to take away 1 star bc the staff, while courteous, is rather stone-faced. The hostess didn't break a smile. The waitress wasn't smiling either. They were pretty serious the whole time. It was kinda odd. I'm used to the wait staff at least give me a obligatory smile welcoming patrons to their restaurant and checking on the food. But nope. These two were pretty much like Mt. Rushmore carvings.

Loved it! In a town with few really good dining options, this is a nice find. Really enjoyed the salmon-green salad-dill havarti dish. It sounded a bit odd, but was very good. Also had a nice glass of wine recommended by my server (a white! no less - not my usual taste). It was a well-balanced riesling, as I remember (writing a month after my meal). The true highlight of the meal, though, was the appetizer. The blue cheese bruschetta, like the salmon, sounded a little unusual, but it was absolutely fantastic. Highly recommend this dish, and this restaurant. A very nice place for dinner, especially if you're looking for something a little more creative and upscale.

Fantastic! I had the top beef sirloin, the wife had the salmon. Both were awesome. Kids menu is standard, but the ingredients are fresh. Great list of beers and wine. Staff are nice and great with the service. In a word. Yes!

We're staying over in Hill City and all the reviews in that town were dismal so we're happy to travel a few miles to this charming restaurant. We split their Jamaican chicken fricassee main course, and we had the Cesar salad and the soup of the day which was a delicious split pea. The chicken had a nice flavor, not spicy at all, which was too bad, and a lot of potatoes. Not too much chicken, I'm dinging a star because the Cesar salad had the preshredded Parmesan cheese you buy in bulk in a bag. And the apple rhubarb crisp for dessert had waaaaay too much cinnamon Other than that, the service and everything else was great. Not five stars but a solid 3 1/2 to 4 We arrived very hungry after driving from Greybull to the black hills, Mt. Rushmore and then onto the Badlands. It was a hot day and I don't believe this restaurant had air conditioning. It was warm inside,

Seated quickly and service was immediate. Everyone ordered differently and pleased with the selections. Their version of a grilled cheese sandwich had mushrooms and artichokes on it and the bread was perfectly grilled. Yummy, satisfying lunch for all.

Found this gem on the way to Custer State Park while on vacation. We were tired or fast food and burgers so wanted a relaxing place with fresh fare. This was it! Great restaurant in a scenic town. Family friendly and a nice variety in their selection of lunch items. I had the "grown up grilled cheese" and could only finish half as it was such a generous portion. My husband had the Cajun pasta and raved about it. Kids meals were good too! Highly recommend stopping in for a nice break and a wonderful meal.

I went here only a week ago on a "first date" so I didn't feel it was appropriate to whip out my camera and photograph my food like I usually do, but I wish I could show you the lovely dish I had. I had the grilled salmon on a piece of dark bread (sort of an open-faced meal), which was recommended to me by my date. It was DIVINE. Firstly, they were careful not to overcook the salmon and it was cooked perfectly. It was a large piece, so you get your money's worth. Then they covered it with cheese (provolone?), and then the most delightful thing. They serve a wild mixed greens salad on top of that with homemade dressing. Sounds weird, but the end result is delightful. The bread we asked for, so I'm not sure if it's on the menu or not, but it was a freshly sliced bagette. Yummy. I only have one complaint. It's VERY loud, and there's no booths. I'm a big fan of privacy and love booths, but this place is wide open. Since there's so much wood everywhere, every noise is magnified. Also, it's pretty busy, so we had to sit at the bar, which normally I do not like to do. But if you want good food, come here, then find some place else in Custer for an after-meal cocktail and privacy. The best part of the dish was its price, especially for a dinner menu. Get this, it was under $10. Simply amazing.

We chose this restaurant because it seemed to be only one of two restaurants nearby that had vegan offerings, and this one had at least two vegan menu items...or so we thought. When we tried to order the chickpea burger, we found out it had egg or dairy in it. That's no good, so we had only one choice left - the Garlic and Oil Penne Pasta. We asked for it without cheese and it turned out to be excellent. Our vegetarian friend had the chickpea burger and he said while it had a very good taste, he didn't like the texture, it fell apart too easily, it was too hard to eat, and he didn't finish it. The server was very pleasant, but very slow, and that was odd because the place had about 7 customers in it, including us, and at least 3 servers wandering around. Took a long time to receive our food, waited at least 30 minutes. But the decor was nice, it had very interesting before and after photos of the area on the walls, and the family sitting at the table next to us did not have obnoxious kids, so we had a pleasant time there. All in all, I recommend the place if you're not in a hurry.

Stopped by here for dinner based on a recommendation of a friend and was pleasantly surprised. We were greeted by the hostess with a big smile and she even brought us drinks while we waited for a table. Sat down to dinner and got our order in pretty quickly. It took a little while for dinner and when it finally came out, I was a bit perplexed as there was Blue Cheese on top of the Spanish Style Shrimp and Penne, which I did not know. The staff was very accommodating and quickly got me another version of this dish minus the Blue Cheese. The entire wait for the food was well worth the wait. Very tasty dish with a roasted spice flavor that came out quite well, shrimp that was quite tasty and to top it all off, BACON pieces!!! BACON!!! it is the food of the Gods!!! LMAO!!! My wife had the walleye and said it was one of the best walleye dishes she has ever had. Both of our children loved their penne with butter and parm. It was well work the time to stop and really had a great meal here. When we come back to Custer again, Sage Creek Grill will be a must stop for dinner at least one of the nights we are in town.

We made two trips to Sage Creek Grill in four nights (and we were staying in Rapid City). I enjoyed the buffalo burger, and my wife REALLY liked the wild salmon sandwich. The soups were tasty and filling, too. The side salad is not a strong point. The atmosphere was pleasant, and the photos on the wall are great. We were too full for dessert, but what I saw looked enticing.

This is a very impressive place. My wife and I shared a mixed greens, feta, and pecan salad. Everything was extremely fresh and exactly the right proportions to the mix. The poppy seed vinaigrette was suburb. My wife got a salmon BLT that she said was perfectly cooked in all respects. The other two persons at our table got an open face meatloaf salad. They continued to exclaim that they've never had meatloaf that tasted so good. I got a grilled cheese sandwich with mushrooms,, onions, and tomato; it was very good. The sandwiches came with grilled potatoes that were well-seasoned and cooked to perfection. The service was attentive without being intrusive, and our server was tremendously patient with our group. My only criticism (and it is a mild one) is that their deserts do not live up to their other food. They were only okay.

We just tried out Sage Creek Grill on our first night in the Custer area. Overall, we were pleased. Given the location, this is probably one of the better restaurants around. Food was pretty good, with salads being the low point. We really enjoyed the mixed vegetables and mashed sweet potatoes. Service was friendly though we had issues with our server being timely. She probably had too many tables that we keeping her busy. Dessert choices were cool. We tried their carrot cake and chocolate chili pot de creme. The carrot cake was one of the best I've had and the pot de creme was very flavorable and we liked the spicy touch of the chili but a bit too heavy and thick for our expectations. All in all, this place is worth visiting especially if you're looking for something lighter and healthier than your typical western steak joint.

Potato soup is really good and everything was reasonably portioned. Husband ordered bison ribeye. I had a burger. We were both quite happy. This was probably our best dining experience in Custer. Great place to stop on your way to Mt Rushmore or after a drive through Needles Hwy.

This place was the absolute highlight of a one week trip across the country. Possibly the best burger I have ever had. Get it (the bison burger) with blue cheese, mushrooms, and bacon. Also, the soup of the day, a cheesy steak something or other, was fantastic.

Good food and Fresh! Their food has a unique taste and feels fresh (did I mention that already?) The buffalo chicken sandwich was really good, as was the salmon-melt. Priced right for the quantity and quality.

Yeah, not so much. Service was surly. Honestly, she literally threw the check down and turned away without saying anything. This was AFTER she brought my penne with feta ... without feta. No compensation offered. She also never offered us drinks. While I was yearning for a salad in the land-o-meat, it was fair, like something I would throw together at home, although the dressing was homemade and tasty. The wait for service was long, given the two waitstaff and only a handful of tables. The homemade bread was good. I liked the quiet atmosphere, the knotty pine paneling, and the local artwork, but we watched four - count 'em four - parties come in, only to turn around and walk out.. Two of these groups actually sat down and waited for service and then left. They're trying here, but they are missing the mark.

What a lovely restaurant to find in South Dakota. I was traveling through and was so glad I stopped. The food was wonderful, I had the steak (cooked to perfection) and my sister had the Cajun fettuccine and both were delectable. The wine list was affordable and delicious our beautiful waitress gave us excellent suggestions. Plus, our meals had tons and tons of fresh roasted vegetables which is a rarity I feel like! Anyways, I couldn't say enough nice things about this restaurant if I lived in the area I would use it as a great special occasion or date restaurant. Great job!

They do a small menu very well. Portions are just right, service is excellent and the $20 bottle of French Chardonnay went well with the Walleye main course. Terrific value.

Loved to find a restaurant like this in Custer! Great fresh food. Tried the salmon special, salmon sandwich, and pork sandwich. All were amazing! Affordable wine list as well. Be sure to try this place out.

A welcome oasis in bison burger hell. Our meal was fresh, inventive and yummy. Great service helped to add the cherry on top.

I found this place from a Budget Travel travel guide. The food was fabulous!! The atmosphere could use some help, too much wood and not as cozy as it should be. Almost like 5-star food with 3-star atmosphere. But it's the best place to dine in Custer. It wasn't crowded when we walked by which made me question the goodness -- but it turned out to be a very, very good meal. I had a pork chop -- one of the best I've ever had. My hubby had the buffalo -- very good too. For a very nice meal in the Custer area this is the place!!!

My husband and I ate at Sage Creek Grille during our recent trip to South Dakota. I highly recommend this restaurant! My husband has special dietary needs and the cook was very accomodating. Our meals were delicious and the atmosphere was great! It is not that easy to find a good eatery in the wild west but this is one!

If you're traveling through Custer, SD- STOP and eat here!!! The food was great and perfectly priced; I had the Buffalo Burger and it was to die for. I tasted the Elk special, also amazing- as was the veggie pasta. The service was good, not exceptional but you can't expect 5 star, celebrity owned, style service from a local place on a limited budget and resources (aka Waitresses in Custer, South Dakota!) The artwork on the walls was really nice and by a local artist and the place had a really low key and peaceful ambiance. I highly recommend this fine establishment!

A very good meal, and we also thought that our server was attentive and good. The food seemed a little dry, and the buffalo burger wasn't cooked as we requested (it was overcooked). The restaurant is beautiful, but it's loud because the sound bounces off all that lovely wood. Still, the food was good, and we'd definitely recommend it if you're traveling through Custer.

We ate here for lunch and came back for dinner. The food was excellent and so was the service. I hade the potato soup and pulled pork for lunch. The potato soup was awesome. The pulled pork was also tasty. My husband had the balsamic chicken salad. He really enjoyed it. For dinner I had the Cajun Cream pasta with chicken - very tasty. My husband had the buffalo sirloin which he said was excellent. This was one of the best meals we've had on our trip including a couple of good meals in Boulder.

Mixed feelings.... delicious, fresh salads (field greens with cranberries and poppy seed dressing, house and Caesar), but below the mark on the entrees. Sirloin was cooked exactly to my daughter's preference, but the potatoes were under-cooked. My husband ordered the Cajun fettuccine and added shrimp to it. The shrimp was steamed with no seasoning whatsoever, and the fettuccine had absolutely no flavor or seasoning. Not sure why they call it Cajun! It was blah and bland. I'd never order it again. As far as the service goes, the hostess was very friendly and we were seated quickly. We waited for quite some time to have someone take our drink order. Finally the hostess took our drink order, as apparently our server was busy. When the server did come to our table to take our order, she was efficient, but not friendly, but any means. Over all, an average experience. Not worth the $100 that we spent.

This was one of the best meals we had while visiting the Black Hills this summer. Glad to have the option for real lettuce instead of iceberg for our salads. Enjoyed both our entrees but dh's pulled pork sandwich was definitely the winner. Appreciated a beer selection that included local breweries.
