Burger King is terrible but I still eat there because I'm a shameful fat pig and some chemical compound in their mayonnaise causes simultaneous uterine comfort and ecstatic euphoria. Fast food hangovers are a small price to pay for BK (early death from cancer-diabetes-obesity is, admittedly, a larger price, but I haven't gotten there yet....) Anyway, I'm reviewing the Brookings location, not the entire chain. So here's the thing with the Brookings BK that never ceases to infuriate me: THE STRAWS AND LIDS ARE CRAMMED INTO A CORNER ABUTTING BOTH A WALL AND THE SODA DISPENSER. Now, when I say in all caps that the straws and lids are crammed into a corner abutting the soda dispenser, I don't mean that they're conveniently located next to the soda dispenser a la the suspiciously clean McDonald's down the road or every other fast food restaurant in God's own country. I mean that they are crammed into a corner, abutting on one side a wall that blocks anyone's reach from any angle except "directly in front" and on the other side the soda machine, where proud BK consumers - large men and strange women and dirty children and elderly veterans of WWII - stand and push and shove to gain access to the soda machine, while you who have already dispensed your own soda must wriggle your way backwards (because wide consumers crowd on all sides of you, elbowing their way to the pop pop pop) and then wriggle BACK into the chaos to retrieve a straw and lid. Recently I visited this BK to sit alone in shame (except this is Brookings so if you live here and leave your house, you invariably run into someone you know - wave and smile at your friends and colleagues, you fat slob!!!), and I managed to make my way to the register. This is no easy feat - the register line seems clearly and logically drawn, with barriers and everything, but the excitement of being at Burger King apparently confuses the patrons, who waddle about in concentric circles orbiting the center of what would otherwise be an orderly line of customers. People who've paid mingle with people who haven't ordered yet, who mingle with people who already have their food but are still mingling nonetheless. This always happens at the BK, where there is a clearly demarcated line, but never happens at the suspiciously clean McDonald's, where no clearly demarcated line exists. EXPLAIN ME THAT, STEPHEN HAWKINGS! Anyway, I don't blame BK for the disorder of the register line (though they have a separate counter for desserts, located across the room from the regular food counter, which doesn't ameliorate the general confusion). But as for the design flaw at the lid/straw dispensers, there is no excuse. On my recent visit, I waited three full minutes after filling my soda cup before I finally retrieved my lid and straw, because I mistakenly used the Diet Coke dispenser located ten full inches to the right of the lids and straws, so I had to step back and move to the left, at which point people stepped in front of me from all sides. Some had to fill their sodas, some needed lids and straws, and others just wanted to chat with each other and scratch their backsides. At a normal BK, I would simply walk AROUND the horde and politely snatch my lid, straw. But at this one, a random WALL prevents any such maneuver. After waiting three minutes for a slot to open, I came within reaching distance of a lid...at which point, an elderly man's arm curved around my torso - from my spine around the love-handles to my naval, where his age-spotted hand reached forward to grab a straw - because the structural insanity of the whole set-up drove him to inappropriate physical contact. And at a fast food restaurant, any physical contact is inappropriate. They have an entire extra counter just for fat slobs like me to pick up their whip-creamed-and-maraschinoed milkshakes. Why not put some straws and lids there? Why cram all of us into one dark, fleshy corner, where our fat bodies touch and potentially congeal into one terrifying amorphous blob of Midwestern salt gluttony? Tear down! Rebuild!
