The food was decent. Took a long time to bring us our food though. Wait staff was friendly but lazy. Our waiter was essentially absent during the meal. Too many other good places to eat to go back.

Atmosphere is awesome here. Food is good also. Cool place to stop after riding on the Swamp Rabbit Trail. And they have ice cream and Hawaiin Ice! Service was awkward and slow however.

Everyone was very pleased with their meals, and the food was excellent. I had the ribeye and it was very tasty, even though the waiter failed to ask how I'd like it cooked. It wasn't seasoned, but a dash of salt brought it to the edge of perfection. I tried a bit of my wife's corn pudding, and it was also very good. The decor is nice but a bit cliche with so many Marilyn Monroe and James Dean pieces, and not quite consistent with the train theme. The booth seats seem a bit low to the ground, so I opted for a chair at the table instead. I'm looking forward to trying more of their menu.

Five us for lunch on the roof. Service was really slow. I had the chicken salad. It was good. We had to get up and get our own silverware though before we could eat. We never got drink refills. Third time and this was the best experience. Don't know why we came back.

This place is wonderful and just what Travelers Rest needs. When reading their menu, which we had stopped to do on a Swamp Rabbit Trail ride one day, the descriptions sound delicious. I was hesitant, wondering if it was going to be like airport food - wonderful descriptions, and more than sub-par food. It took us about a month to go and try. I'm ecstatic to announce that the food we got was exactly as described. I got a variety of different items because I couldn't choose. The mozzarella sticks (I got mine done in the wood oven) are absolutely homemade and the fire roasted marinara was on point. I've never had a better mozzarella stick. We also got the Brussels sprouts, my boyfriend a chicken plate (he got mac & cheese as a side = awesome!), and my sister the Asian salad. I suggested they create a "sides only" entree because there is such good variety. The only reason you would find this place pricey is if you are from down south. As a Maryland native, the quality (and quantity) of the food was well worth the price - and I've lived down South for 7 years now. The atmosphere (we sat upstairs outside) is fun and unique and the service was excellent. It's clear there has been a lot of work put into the decorating as well as the food. Give it a try and support them because TR needs places like this to stick around!

Good burgers and fries. Travelers Rest is a great up and coming town next to Greenville. This is a good stopping place for a cold beer and bite to eat.

FIVE STARS! This place is incredible!!!! Ask for Roby to serve you! It's guys night out with my little man! Totally kid friendly! Choo choo trains ery'where!!!!! Got the cheeseburger slider for the champ and bacon Mac n cheese! I had to try it and it was a party in my mouth! Cheesy wonder!!!! Order the pork chop, lobster mashed potatoes, and candied red cabbage! SO GOOD I ordered extras to go!!! Not kidding! God bless you Whistlestop! FIVE STARS!
(5)Phil H.
This is an Incredible place to eat! The Wait staff was friendly and kept drinks filled and food was fantastic and filling! I definitely recommend them to others and I will go back again as well!!!
(5)Drew S.
The whistle stop meets all of my expectations for a small town joint. Specializing in a variety of foods, I found myself appreciative of their fish and enjoying the atmosphere.

We stopped by the day after the Greenville Small Plates Crawl ended so we did not get to try the offerings for the crawl. We ordered from the menu which truly has something for everyone. I had the BBQ Cheddar Burger, but the 109 Burger made the decision a tough one. Both possible selections included bacon and some form of cheese. The Onion Ties in the burger stack I chose were the deciding factor since I enjoy good deep fried onion rings (or ties) as the case may be! I even had a side of Onion Ties with my burger. Their Sweet Potato FF are also as good as you will find anywhere... I had a few my wife could not finish. The other fellow in our foursome considers himself a "hotdog snob" and has driven far and wide searching out good dogs with a crisp snap in the bite. He declared the pair of Junior's Original Hotdogs with the secret chili recipe to be "excellent" hotdogs! Tasty good food and the train motif is a fascinating theme for kids of all ages. What more is needed for a fun lunch stop? The restaurant is very clean; the wait staff is friendly, helpful with menu questions, and attentive.

This was seriously one of the weirdest dining experiences I have had in a long time. It seemed there were too many leaders and not enough followers. They had just started selling liquor and it was a little slow on making drinks but that is to be expected with a new menu. The food menu is also all over the place. It has a variety of cuisines and didn't seem to specialize in anything in particular. I assume what was the owner was sitting next to me getting a lesson on varietals of wine. It was just overall a very weird experience. I left feeling confused about the identity of this place. And why the need for so many managers many of whom were standing around anyways. The location of this place is awesome. Right in downtown travelers rest and right off of the swamp rabbit trail. I'm sure it gets busy and I think with the right combination of management, food, and identity this place could really excel. I love travelers rest and hope this place gets it together to make it for a while!

We waited almost an hour before they brought our food to us. By the time that we got our food, it wasn't cooked all the way, didn't have the proper seasonings, most of it was cold, and I am never going back there again. I don't recommend it to anyone.
(1)Sarah O.
VERY friendly staff and great food. Portions were huge. Will be back!
(5)Natasha H.
The Shrimp & Grits are one of the best in town! And I have had shrimp & grits from just about any and every restaurant in the upstate lol Also the service was wonderful! The place has a cozy atmosphere that is warm and inviting. The menu was a little higher than I expected but well worth the money! My husband and I will definitely be back and I recommend everyone stop by and try their food.
(5)Kayla M.
Not only was the food absolutely amazing but the customer service was excellent best eating experience this year hands down.
(5)Jonathan W.
The ambiance and staff were great. However, the enormous amounts of smoke and general lack of restaurant experience is apparent. I ordered the snapper and while it was a nice piece of fish it want prepared with much flavor. The red peppers on it were tiny pieces like the size of pimento in an olive. My beer was warm, no biggie they got me another. The grit cake served with the snapper was raw in the middle. For a $30 meal in TR they better step up their game I think if they are also trying to be upscale dining with the menu. Next time maybe if it try it I should stick with a burger or a pizza?
(2)Barbara A.
Great Fried Green Tomatoes! I really loved the goat cheese and dipping sauce was perfectly tart and spicy! Great burgers! Great BLT! We loved the downtown location and the decor was so cute and perfect!
(4)Derrick T.
So far this has been a great place to eat. The ambience is excellent the decorations are engaging in interesting. Great place to take the kids as well as the rest of the family.

The owners have done a nice job refurbishing this historic building. Our first visit was very good, my wife got the hamburger steak dinner and it was delicious. I got the pepperoni pizza, loved the thin crispy crust, just enough cheese and pepperoni over a very nice tasting sauce...loved it everything about it. So decided to return for another pizza, invited some friends to try it out. Two of us got the pizza, what a huge disappointment...what we got this time was nothing like the previous one I got. This time the pizza was thick crust, chewy, and the flavor not nearly as good as what I remembered. I mentioned this to one of their employees and their reply was...."ah, well, we have two different pizza cooks and they make the pizza differently, will mention it though". I realize that some may like the thicker pizza better, but having two very different pizzas depending only on who cooks them that day does not seem like a good business model to me. Not knowing what pizza I will get next time will not be visiting for pizza again. Very disappointed as the first pizza was sooooo good. We found the food a bit pricy.

We made reservations with a "manager" for 25 at this restaurant a month and a half ago for our dog owners group. Upon arrival we were told by the general manager there was no reservation, and we were not welcome to come back. The wait staff was friendly, but ownership doesn't want our business. I will never go back here for any reason.
(1)Diane R.
One of the best places in TR. Having had the original hot dogs from the American Cafe, I must say the family is keeping the title of best hot dogs in TR. Junior would be proud!
(5)Stephen F.
Excellent!!!!! My wife and I had date night and decided to try this restaurant since we live in TR. The service was great and the food gets 2 thumbs up. The atmosphere was pleasant and friendly. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
(5)Carolyn C.
Dined on the nicely decorated deck. Waiter was very nice and attentive. I ordered the "homemade" chicken salad. It consisted of pecans and cranberries mixed into CANNED chicken served over lettuce with more pecans and cranberries. One can only eat so many pecans and cranberries. We won't talk about the chicken!
(2)Adam B.
This place was outstanding! My wife and I have family in Travelers Rest and they couldn't stop talking about it so we had to try in when we came into town. I had BBQ and my wife had a Burger. Both of our items were cooked to perfection. Our waiter was outstanding and made everything was okay. Not only did we enjoy the food but really enjoyed the decor in the restaurant. If anyone is ever in or near Travelers Rest I would highly recommend eating here!

After reading all the Yelp reviews we were very skeptical of this place, but frankly, we were pleasantly surprised when we stopped in for dinner. We dropped in at about 8pm on a Saturday, and it wasn't crowded at all. We quickly found a table on the roof, which was open and comfortable. The wait staff was extremely friendly and on top of things. The prices were a bit more than I was expecting, which is what caused me to give 4/5 stars, but the food was good. We ordered a salad, chicken and pizza for three of us to split and it was a good amount of food. I would say the portions were average, not too small or large. Overall it was a good experience - I'd say it's a bit over priced, but the food is decent and the upstairs seating area is very pleasant.
(4)Jeremy M.
Incredible food service and reasonable price. Shrimp and grits are nice flavor. Amazing. Fired chicken was good. Good roles.
(5)Carolyn C.
Great find! The two of us had salads and shared the potato fried chips. Would definitely go back.
(5)Gil G.
The pizza was very good. The service (Theo) was first rate. Definitely going back for more soon. The roof top setting is a delightful option on a nice evening.
(5)Joe H.
I ate here again yesterday with a friend, this time we sat in the rooftop seating area. As per my usual experience, it was a great experience! This time I had a bacon club wrap and 1/2 fries / rings. The service was good, the food was hot and fresh, the waitress was attentive and the decor upstairs is as well planned as that inside. Well done!
(5)Matt D.
My wife and I were very excited to try the Whistle Stop as we live nearby and eat out often. We were looking for a new go to spot. We thought because it is always so extremely crowded it must be good but we were sadly mistaken. I must say this was the worst service I have ever received, one would think we were at Dicks Last Resort a restaurant themed with rude waitstaff as a joke! We never received napkins or a knife and we were eating messy foods like a half chicken and pizza and we requested these items several times. The food was okay but not worth 50 dollars by any means especially with the horrendous service. We complained to the manager but he only offered us a dessert voucher we declined as we have no desire to return. Save your hard earned money and go to Shortfields down the street better food and great service!

My boyfriend and I ate here for the first time tonight. We were so excited to try a new local restaurant with an interesting history, but sadly extremely disappointed. When we got there, the hostess told us there "weren't any tables open" so we would have to sit at the bar. When I asked how long the wait for a table was, she said she didn't know and seemed confused as to why a hostess should know this information. Thankfully a couple was leaving as this conversation took place, so we took their table instead....only to realize that there were five open tables in the adjacent dining area as we walked by it. The food was terrible and extremely overpriced for the quality. I ordered the shrimp and grits ($16) and was dismayed to have a bowl of instant grits and frozen shrimp, sausage, and red peppers brought to the table. My boyfriend ordered a 12" cheese pizza ($10 plus $1.50 for every additional topping) and it was made with generic canned tomato sauce and a mound of plain mozzarella cheese. My food was so bad that I ended up not being able to eat it, which is something that I can honestly say I've never done at a restaurant before. Our waiter was very apologetic, but obviously extremely inexperienced and had no idea how to handle the situation. He didn't offer to take the shrimp and grits off our bill or even alert his manager to the problem. I will definitely not be eating here again after the awful experience of tonight.

I had dinner here with a client. We were looking for something casual but with good food. This place hit the spot. We each had the Shrimp and Grits. They were very good, slightly spicy, which is how I like them..and the serving size was perfect. Pleasant waiter and hostess. We had a couple of beers ....decent selection, but only had one of what I was drinking...disappointed I could not have another. Bottom line, if you are in Travelers Rest you should check this place out.

I have been to the Whistle Stop 3 times. Twice for lunch and once for dinner. Got the Swamp Rabbit Wrap for lunch both times with fries on the side. Good portion of food for lunch and the Chipotle wrap was a nice lunch item. I had the 12" Italian Sausage Pizza for dinner and had enough left over to take home. The atmosphere is nice and I was treated well during every visit. The first lunch visit was during the peak of the lunch traffic and I waited maybe 15 minutes for my food and the other two times I got my food in less than 10 minutes. Looking forward to going to this Cafe every couple of weeks.

I have to say... it's not often I review a restaurant especially one so far from my home in Michigan, but my young family of 4 had such an amazing time I had to spread the word. First off we were in the area for a wedding and needed a place to eat dinner. We arrived and were seated right away!! The decor is so cool. My kids loved the train going around and around. The wait staff were over the top nice to our kids! They brought their food in a train box and gave them balloons with a rubber ducky tied to it... It had their initials on it! Who does that!!! So right off the bat, this let us relax knowing our kids weren't going to "ruin the night." Looking at the menu everything sounded so good, so it took us a while to decide. We finally settled on the pork chops with lobster mashed potatoes and candies red cabbage and the catfish dinners based on recommendations from a lovely couple near by. Holy cow! We basically split both meals because they were so good! The portions were very awesome without being over the top. I couldn't believe the flavor of the pork chop... best I have ever had... BRAVO to the chef! I then tried the catfish from my wife's plate (I'm not usually a fish fan) the flavor on this thing was out of this world. Oh I don't want to forget the fried green tomatoes!!! I'm from the North, so I didn't know these existed! All I can say is WOW! Five Stars for the Whistle Stop this is just another reason to visit our friends and family in South Carolina!
(5)Chuck W.
I finally stopped in for lunch. Sweet tea needs a bit of help. I had the bbq burger. The sauce was delicious. They cook the burgers to order and your preferred doneness, not too common anymore. It came out just as ordered. Onion straws are a good side. The waitress was very nice and kept my tea glass full, a definite plus.
(4)Patrick W.
I was very excited that this establishment was finally opened in my hometown. The inside decor is truly charming. I thought to myself, it's about time TR got something like this. I decided to go for lunch only to find a VERY minimal menu. I ordered the pizza since there was little or no vegetarian options. I ordered a small pizza with black olives, onions, and mushrooms with an ice tea to drink. The pizza was nothing at all to brag about but I ate it. Then I received my ticket. $17.00! So small lunch pizza with three toppings and a sweet tea ended up being a twenty dollar lunch after tip. I do believe this place has potential. Let me know when the menu expands and the food is finally worth that type of money.

Don't want to waste time on a review. Cool building. But just keep driving by until it fails and something descent takes over.
(1)Janis P.
Food, just okay. Had to wait, someone was taken ahead of us. The waiter was slow taking our order and we waited 45 minutes for our meal . The onion rings were cold but we're guickly relaced. The owner just made excuses in stead of apologies .
(2)Chip D.
Food is excellent but kitchen is really slow. The wood fired chicken is really good on a salad. And the fried green tomatoes are great.
(3)Matthew E.
2 stars only because the design and atmosphere is awesome. The food...not so much. I had the hand partied burger which was tiny for the price. My friend had the beef stew which was more like a vegetable soup broth with a little beef. The servers are great and friendly but it's clear that the management has gone the cheaper route on food quality. Also, the lady behind the bar was drinking a personal tumbler in front of the customers which should not happen. I often ate here when it was the American Cafe but the current business will need to step their game up to stay here. Good- servers and building, Bad- amount of parking and Ugly- food quality and pricing. Please improve because I really want this to be awesome. We need food options in TR.
(2)Bob C.
Very nice decor with a lot of potential, but the food was awful! I know this place is new and hope it is successful, but they have to make huge improvements in their food,
(1)Terrence S.
Place is unique and fun; service was friendly and pleasant, but unfortunately the food was a bit lacking. Similar to preparing frozen meals - not restaurant quality. Perhaps another item would have been better.
(3)Jimmy M.
Had a burger, the quality of the product was not good. My wife will NOT return and left her meal unfinished on her plate. Too bad as we had really hoped to like this place. We were given the excuse, "we are about to close." To explain the unsatisfactory experience. About to close is no excuse! If we are allowed to pay we should be allowed to enjoy a good experience. I gave two stars instead of one, simply because the decor was exceptional. But atmosphere does not make up for poor food product. We will not return.
(2)Matt D.
ribeye cooked perfectly, sandwich and experience all great. ask for theo, he was a great server.
(5)Jessie R.
My husband and I ate here twice in as many days. First for lunch, which was amazing. I had the chicken salad, and for $6.50, expected a tiny scoop of chicken salad and a handful of lettuce. It was a HUGE mound of delicious chicken salad on top of this oversized plate of greens, nuts, cheese, and dried fruit. It was so much food I couldn't finish it. My husband had a burger and it was bigger than his face. The waiter/bartender was awesome and hilarious! The second time we brought our kids and they had a fit over the kitchy little meal boxes shaped like a train, plus they got toys with the meal! The food and atmosphere here is filled with southern love and charm. I highly recommend them!
(5)Timothy F.
Great place to eat in Travelers Rest. Wood-fire grilled fare. Friendly, attentive staff.
(4)Amanda K.
went for an early dinner. food was just ok...pretty much no veg options. kids meals come in a cute paper locomotive. kiddos enjoyed the trains outside.
(2)Chris H.
I have eaten lunch and dinner there. I have tried something different just about every time and have enjoyed every thing. Great atmosphere and dining experience.
(5)Skip T.
Well, we drove from Greer to try The Whistle Stop. We arrived a little after 2. Walking in behind us was a group of two families and a couple. Upon approaching the hostess we were promptly told..."we are closed for lunch now. But you can come back at 5 for dinner.". Only open over a month and they turned away 12 people. All those turned away were shocked and disappointed. As my husband and I were standing outside the front door discussing how the management has most certainly started out on the wrong foot by allowing this to happen... She said, "we usually let two stragglers in around this time of the day if we would like to come in.". We thanked her then declined. The hostess attempted to explain why they close mid day. She said they have limited seating, limited staff, and need to get ready for dinner ". The entire experience of driving 25 minutes, being turned away, then bring told all the reasons they have for turning away customers is due to one thing. Poor management. We will not return unless new management akes over.
(1)Roy H.
My wife, son and I are here for dinner. Fabulous, excellent food, reasonable prices and cool atmosphere. It's new which may explain a few glitches noted in other reviews but we were very pleased. We travel and often spend quite a bit more for comparable quality.
(5)Mimi K.
We have eaten here for lunch and for dinner. Lunch was good. I had a chicken salad and cup of soup. My husband had a hamburger. We ate for dinner another evening. We waited for about 15 minutes and a couple with their daughter was sat before us. My husband had a pizza which was very very bad. The crust was thick and doughy and the ingredients were not great. I had roasted chic with Mac and cheese and collards. These sides were really wonderful and the chicken was dry and barely seasoned. Prices were a little high at dinner. Service is so-so. We barely saw out waitress at dinner and it took forever to bring our check. We'll stick to lunch!
(3)Jon H.
We had dinner with our friends and could not have had a more enjoyable experience. Dining room was packed, so we asked if we could be seated on the rooftop area. While it wasn't really open, they accommodated us and the Manager and hostess served us. The setting was great, they fell over themselves providing fine service and really good food at fair prices. They're not perfect, but it's a new restaurant and there may be some bumps, but it's a good place with super atmosphere and a young staff that tries very hard. We had a wonderful time and can't wait to go back.
(4)Trish H.
Had lunch today and was disappointed. My friend and I had the beef stew special which was a few cubes of over cooked beef and a lot of potatoes. No vegetables or seasoning. Very bland and dull. My husband had a lunch meat wrap with sweet potato fries. The fries were good, the wrap ordinary. Service was slow, room very noisy. No fried green tomatoes at this whistle stop cafe! There are several better choices in TR for lunch.
(1)Kathy D.
Some friends told me the Whistle Stop was a place to try. We were very pleased.Atmosphere was very nice & food was great. Waitress very efficient. Shrimp & grits were very good . My husband had the fire roasted chicken very moist. We will try this restaurant again.
