Is this place gourmet, No. Do they have typical beach bar food, fair prices, and great location, Yes. Most places sitting on the beach will jack up their prices, serve sub-par cuisine, and staff the joint with serves who act like they are doing you a favor. None of these are the case with Surf Diner. It's a great place to grab breakfast or lunch before, during, or after hitting the beach. I have tried several menu items and the Flounder is my favorite, simple and fresh. Things to note....They do not have a private lot so you will have to pay for parking and they do have a full bar but you cannot take your drinks onto the beach. If you come with lowered expectations and are fortunate to get a seat outside I think you will enjoy yourself. * First time Check-In on Yelp will get you 10% off you bill.

How do you screw up breakfast??! Went to eat there for breakfast and wasn't expecting much and got even less than that. Great view but that's a given being that you are on the beach. Service was good and friendly but the food was awful. I had the french toast platter, french toast was very eggy and no flavor, eggs over medium were sunny side up, sausage links were over cooked and dry. We ordered silver dollar pancakes for our kiddo and they tasted like playdoh I mean literary like playdoh smells, yuck, her sausage patties were hard as rocks. My father in laws Ham was saltier than the Atlantic Ocean we had the pleasure of viewing during breakfast. The only high points in the meal was the grits and my wifes breakfast bowl, however she said she wouldn't be going back for just that.

Great place to stop when headed to Surfside Beach. I prefer the the takeout option. Nothing like eating a Bacon Biscuit or Bacon Egg and Cheese Breakfast sandwich and listening to the waves.

Had breakfast there this morning and I have to say it was the most delicious breakfast I hsve ever had. Chicken fried steak, grits, pancakes are all amazing. Also our waitress Betsy was super sweet. Love this place

I won't go back. Such a shame, because the location is amazing. I asked if there were any drink specials. "No." Along with awkward silence. Oh, so no happy hour? "Not on Sundays." (Wicked Tuna has them everyday.) Oh, okay. 60 seconds later: "Can I get you a drink?" Sure... Iced tea, and a Diet Pepsi. 60 seconds later: "Do you know what you want to order?" (I hadn't barely looked at the menu yet.) No. Just the check, thanks. 6 bucks with tip. Wow. I've been a waiter, bartender, bus boy, cook, bar back, bell hop, doorman, and a manager with 12+ years of experience in the industry. You all need to teach your servers basic courtesy, timing, and how to politely offer alternatives and talk up the menu if you expect to make it in this business. We went to Wicked Tuna instead. After spending $50 there, I had almost forgotten the poor service here. The second star, by the way, is for the view.

It would be hard to screw up a breakfast and this place was no exception. There is seating outside with a great view of the ocean and beach. We did not have to wait at all for a seat (we arrived around 9:30 a.m.) inside. Our waitress came by shortly after being seated to take our order. We did wait awhile for our food but that was understandable because of the crowd. Breakfast arrived. Eggs, bacon, grits and toast. Pancakes and bacon for Mike. It was good and came out warm. A tip for people who have never had grits. You must put butter and sugar in them to make them edible. All in all, a good visit and I would go back there.

A great choice for breakfast on the beach. A good view and reasonable prices. Service can be a little slow. If you are back for any other meal, then please let me know what the go to's are because I went back to split the seafood nachos and they were awful. Please note - if you are a pain killer fan (the drink) they feature this and it's not bad. No where near as good as one you would get in the carribean mind you, but a main lander can only be so picky, plus they at least use Pussers rum which is a deal breaker at most places ;) They also feature fun rum voodoo buckets for two. I have noticed this as a drink trend of late and it seems to be a real lady pleaser. The service is friendly and like I said, great view, right on the beach, within walking distance for most of surfside and I would stick to breakfast and drinks.

Had breakfast here, my wife and I both had waffles, scrambled eggs, and sausage. Food itself was okay minus the sausage. I don't know if they were just from being old or what, but when we had them they were super tough and cold, the rest of the food was warmer. But I'm rating this over the service. Very very bad. Everything we asked for took forever and when we finally got the bill, I paid with a credit card. She came over to get it after we were flagging her down for a while. The waitress brought It back after she wrung in the other 5 tables she just got outside in the deck. However it was lacking my card? So again we waited while she searched for it because it was lost in a book. Left annoyed and disappointed. Won't be back

Usually a restaurant attached to a hotel is not very good, however this one is fantastic! Stayed here for a wedding and ate here three times in two days. Breakfast is awesome and the is friendly. Had the Boom Boom shrimp tacos and they were just the right amount of heat. Drinks and cocktails available also. With defiantly come back and recommend!

We have been in Surfside for 15 years and have experienced every restaurant in the area. I'm always amazed to see the difference in attitude during the winter months when the restaurants have to rely on "locals" to support them versus summertime when business is booming and the waitstaff could care a less about repeat customers. Today was one of those days at Surf Diner. We got up early to have coffee on the beach and watch the sunrise. After our coffee we decided to run down to Surf Diner or another restaurant for breakfast. When we arrived at the pier we realized that Surf Diner didn't open until 7:30. We debated on weather to stay and wait until they open or go somewhere else because the last time we ate here the food wasn't very good, wait was long and we felt it was over priced. Because we were already there we decided to take in the views and wait 40 minutes until they opened. At 7:30 there was a crowd at the door to get in and fortunately we were there early to get a great spot on the deck. As the other guests were seated we noticed that every table was waited on immediately and served coffee. We waited patiently thinking someone would be over soon. When we noticed that everyone was seated and already drinking coffee the waitresses were now taking food orders so I tried to waive a waitress down several times but seemed to be ignored when I know that they saw me. Hmmmm, what the heck? So we decided that this was our last time to step foot in the Surf Diner! It's unfortunate since is so close to our home but enough is enough! When I got up to leave we were still ignored by the waitstaff so I went inside to tell the woman who seated us that we were leaving and why. Her only response was "sorry"! When I walked outside to head down to the beach I thanked the waitress who ignored us several times and then heard another waitress say that "I'll be happy to serve you now". All I could do is laugh. Hey, if you want a place with a great view of the ocean that serves mediocre food that's overpriced this place is where you should go... Otherwise, try one of the other great restaurants along the beach!

The only thing good about this place is the location. Absolutely horrible service! They over charged us then even the manager argued with us even though the menu clearly stated the price. And the food was not even mediocre. The fries and hush puppies were what I could get in the frozen isle at the grocery store. I can't imagine this place staying in business. If so, it must be from tourists trying for the first time because nobody would go back for seconds. Try Bubbas Fish Shack across the street. Amazing!!!

Last summer, I heard constant pounding of hammers and could not relax on the beach. When I found out they opened an outdoor diner on the beach, I was excited to check it out. My husband and I went for breakfast yesterday. I ordered two eggs over medium, and specifically stated, I do not want my egg whites loose. I ordered my bacon crispy, wheat toast and home fries, along with orange juice and coffee. My husband ordered bacon and a swiss cheese omelet, with rye toast and fried potatoes. After a reasonable period of time our breakfast arrived. My eggs were runny and the white was uncooked. It kind of grossed me out and I couldn't eat them. My bacon was nice and crispy, but borderline burned. My toast was very light, but I ate what I had. My husband was not crazy about the omelet and fried potatoes. The coffee was ok. He just wanted to get out of there, because I think he was disgusted looking at my eggs too. I mentioned it to the waitress before we left, and she just said, "Oh, sometimes it is hit or miss. I can ask them to cook them again". I told her no, I lost my appetite. I will not go back.

I have been to this place a couple of time and each and every time I leave disappointed. While the view this place offers is amazing the service unfortunately is not. I would not recommend this place to anyone. There are multiple restaurants nearby that offer the same view with way better service. I was hoping to see some improvement because the food and view are wonderful but with the consistent lack of good service I will not be returning.

Great view. That's about all I can say, average food. Had the blackened flounder salad which had nice flavor but the flounder was greasy on the bottom and made the salad a little greasy. Brother had chicken tenders-typical deep fried frozen tenders. Mom had a burger- she asked for medium but got well done. Mostly bread. We also had the crab bisque- very watery Clam chowder- cream looked separated (see photo) but still tasted good. Ultimately this is a great spot off the beach and by the pier for a decent lunch. UPDATE: decided to come here for breakfast and had a very good dining experience! Eggs perfectly done, huge tasty breakfast for a great price.

While on vacation, I walked down the beach to eat here a few times. The helpings of food were ginormous and well worth the money. When you check in, you even get a nice little discount! The drinks were a little high, but it's worth paying for when you get such a lovely view of the beach. I came and read on the patio for a while and munched on their nachos. It was a thoroughly awesome experience.

Wanted to give the restaurant a try after looking at all the reviews on Yelp. We had breakfast each morning I had waffles, my daughter silver dollar pancakes, and my son had the smiley that consisted of two pancakes, fruit, whip cream, and 1 slice of bacon. I was disappointed that I was charged $5 for a plain country fried stake. I have special dietary needs and told the waitress this and ask if I could substitute the bacon she said yes only to be charged a price for a meal. Overall the food is great the pricing is not so great.

Hostesses were extremely rude. When I first entered I was wearing shorts and a bikini top. The hostess asked me if I had a coverup and I said no (mind you we were also going to eat outside) and she said I would need to come back when I had one. The surf diner is RIGHT ON THE BEACH so why would you make that kind of policy for average food? We went across to another place to buy a myrtle beach t shirt and when we returned the hostess said "nice t shirt where did you get it?" So rude and uncalled for. Our waitress was extremely friendly but unfortunately the two hostesses made the experience horrible. I would not recommend here.

Chicken tenders platter with Mac n cheese and sweet potato fries. The location was perfect. However, that's about all this place had going for it. The server was incredibly inattentive and we had to get up to track her down several times. They forgot my hushpuppies so I had to remind them, but I shouldn't have bothered. For the first time in my life, I had gross hushpuppies. My Mac n Cheese was very soft, but there was a suspicious crunch right in the middle of it. The bathrooms seemed clean, but the smell was atrocious. Would not recommend, especially when there is a Bubba's Shrimp Shack just across the street.

Great food and a great addition to surf side. The breakfast will leave you full till dinner! For lunch the chicken philly is amazing!!! The beer is cold and they have lava flows! makes me miss Hawaii :( any how...come for any meal you won't be disappointed. Make sure you have shoes, shirt, or a bathing suit cover up if not they won't seat you ... Found that out the hard way .

Don't go there hungry...waited over 30 minutes for breakfast. Heard all servers at nearby tables apologizing for the wait...guess it wasn't just us. Other guests were serving themselves...getting ketchup, salt and pepper, creamers from other tables...ridiculous!!! After 3 cups of cold coffee..my husband and I asked our server David if they were short-handed and had the nerve to ask me "Why?" and I said because it's taking a long time for our food to come out. He said "Fridays and Saturdays are busy"...Really??? Poor excuse and it is the off season...6 empty tables near us! Kinda sad really, as the view is awesome- could be a booming business if management/owners knew how to run it!!!

We stayed close by and ate here several times. The breakfast was good. The fried pickles were good. The hamburgers were good. The drinks were good. And the service was good. We especially enjoyed being waited on by Betsy. She was very friendly and attentive and even though she only worked there for 1 one month you would never know she wasn't a local, You can't beat the view!!

This is my families favorite restaurant. We eat here atleast 3 times a month. The crab cake sandwich is my favorite, full of juicy crabmeat, not that stuffing mess. The food is always delicious, and the servers are attentive and extremely friendly. Especially, Rachael!

Tried lunch - would like to try breakfast. Think the other reviewers are spot-on... They need a couple of doors to cover the kitchen; views of ocean are not what you expect given it's beach front. Food is 'solid' but nothing to shake your rocker. Nibils had a great business and the Owner slipped out when the town was forcing him to spend a fortune to bring his dated systems up to code. It's a great location - hopefully they can work the kinks out over time and be prepared for a great 2013 on the coast.

Horrible service and average food. They don't care if you get your food or not. I will never eat there again and I live just down the street. Plenty of other good places close by. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time or money eating at this dump.

Me and two friends decided to go to Surf Diner for dinner while on a weekend trip to the Myrtle Beach area. We will never go back. The experience was bad before we even sat down. The host led us to a table outside that hadn't been cleaned yet. We had to awkwardly stand around while she attempted to clean the table. After we finally sat down, service was so incredibly slow. I gave them some leeway because it was a Friday night on Fourth of July weekend, but it should still not take 10 minutes to get some waters and teas after we ordered them. It took a good 45 minutes to get our food once we ordered it. When it came, half the food wasn't even hot. My corn on the cob was not even slightly warm. My shrimp was hot and good, though. The worst part of the whole night came when we attempted to pay. After our waitress took our plates away, it took 30 minutes to get our checks. No joke. Absolutely ridiculous. That's not even the worst part. When we said we wanted our checks separate, our incredibly smart waitress decided to take the total amount of our check and divide it by three....instead of splitting it up by the meal we each ordered. We were so blown away by the stupidity of this. We attempted to explain to her how to properly split our check, but her face was completely blank. She didn't understand. We didn't want to deal with her anymore, so we paid and got out of there. I ended up paying less for my meal while my friend ended up paying almost $6 more for hers! Then...then....she charged us TWICE!! Looked at bank account the following day and there were two charges of the same amount taken out by Surf Diner. I understand the restaurant was busy and she may have been swamped, so I'm not to concerned about the slow service. But to split our checks evenly instead of by meal is pure incompetence. Then to charge us twice...wow. Do not go to Surf Diner.

No wait at 7pm on a Wed. Sat on the deck to eat with my kids who thoroughly enjoyed a burger and chicken tenders. I had the seared yellowfin tuna which was over cooked and dry. Service was great once someone alerted our waitress she had a table waiting for her on the deck. All in all kids want to go back and I'd go back and try something else off the menu.
I was at the beach, starving, so I decided to go grab a meal at the surf diner...I asked first if I could get it to go...no..... Ok, well can I just sit out here on the deck? Ok ma'am...so out comes the waitress.. She asked me if I had a cover up I could wear over my bathing suit because they don't allow bathing suits .......I didn't, so I left...quite stunned that I just got refused service because I had my bathing suit on at the BEACH.....later I couldn't help but notice all the other people wearing swimsuits and eating there just as I had tried to do myself....when I asked why , she began to say, it is silly but if your bathing suit looks this way, you can come in, but no bikinis..ok...I wish for you people to get sued for discrimination. The place across the street beside bubbas fish shack is delicious, they fed me, quality food too...unlike the disgusting stuff you would get from surf diner...

Not even as good as McDonald's...My family and I visited the Surf Diner for breakfast within the first week it was open. We had also visited Nibils which was previously in this location. Surf Diner was very clean and a friendly staff. They had several breakfast options on their menu. I ordered the Surfside special which was 2 eggs, meat, potatoes, and toast. The potatoes (hash browns) were bland with no taste. I have had better brown and serve sausage than the sausage I ate that day. Eggs were good and toast was ok. My son had pancakes and they were equally bland. My wife enjoyed her breakfast sandwich but was charged 2.99 for a small plate of bland, tasteless hash browns. I thought that was a little excessive. Overall, I gave them one star for being clean and friendly, but based on the food there is no way I will return. One or two summer max on the pier until something with taste replaces them. It just seems like they get everything out of the box rather than trying to specialize in something. How do you screw up breakfast?

After Nibils left, we missed being able to eat overlooking the beach. That spot has been filled in a great way by The Surf Diner! The food is excellent, the atmosphere is pleasant and the staff is friendly!! We went for breakfast one day and went back for dinner the next. We were pleasantly surprised by how good everything is! We look forward to coming back and enjoying their desk which is currently being set up!!

I have eaten here on many occasions and have never been disappointed with the food or the service. The last time I ate there was 7/29/13. I find my sunnyside up eggs always cooked right and I asked for the home fries to be well done, which they always are. I sat outside for the first time, looking at the beach and taking a picture of a parasailer. I recommend this place highly for their friendly staff, excellent service and great food.

We had breakfast here this past Saturday and wish we would have chosen another place. The location is great as its on the pier and you have great views, but that's it for good things to say. Al of the waitresses seemed overwhelmed even though there were empty tables and not very busy. I ordered a bloody mary that had a sweet tomato flavor and was much more juice than vodka in it. Ordered the Cakes and Eggs which were two large pancakes and t eggs. My eggs were sunny side up, but were so under cooked and runny they grossed me out and could not eat them. Pancakes tasted liked can spray butter as it was most likely used on the griddle. Should have used fresh butter to cook them. My husband ordered the Southern Benedict which was english muffins topped with sausage and poached egg then southern gravy on top. Instead of putting a little gravy on top as you do in benedicts, the gravy was ladeled on top so all you saw was gravy. Looked terrible and unsatisfying. The bill was close to $40 as we also had a child's meal for our son. Go someplace else and just go back to walk on pier.

Surfside Diner must do better. Went there tonight since most places had an hour or more wait. Ordered the seafood sampler basket-oysters and shrimp. The 5 pieces of seafood (2 oysters, 3 shrimp) were mushy and obviously pre-breaded and frozen. So was my sister's shrimp and the baby's chicken strips. Seapak shrimp is just as good. I specifically asked whether the onion rings were freshly breaded and they obviously were not. I felt like walking in the kitchen to see for myself! Whatever you do, don't lie to your customer. Before I could leave, they were busing my table. Although he asked whether he was rushing me, well, at that point, it didn't matter. I might try going there for breakfast to see if it's any better. But, apparently someone tried breakfast and didn't like it. Considering the angst over Nibbles closing and the space being vacant for a season, there's a lot more to be desired. Not sure why freshly prepared food is so hard to do. Well, it isn't!

Pretty nice diner off the pier, enjoyed the breakfast. Unfortunate that Nibbles left, but this place was enjoyable either way. If you're looking for a good omelette, nice stack of pancakes, or a breakfast sandwich next to the beach, Surf Diner is worth a shot

The old restaurant, Nibils, was always a favorite breakfast place for us, so we had to try Surf as well. The new decor is clean and bright, but it's a shame they put booths in front of some of the windows, blocking a great view. It's also a shame that if you're in a seat facing away from the ocean you're looking at a big open doorway into the kitchen. Kitchen views can be great when you're watching food preparation, but here you get to see scraping and prepping of dirty dishes. Yuck--who planned that layout??? But the breakfast was good--scrambled eggs, grits, bacon, toast. The waitress asked how we liked our bacon cooked so it was served nice and crispy--I liked that. It was good enough to go back a couple days later for lunch. I had the shrimp tacos and they were delicious! Lots of lightly breaded tender shrimp wrapped up with lettuce and pineapple and a yummy dressing. We went again for lunch a few days later and I ordered the shrimp tacos again, and so did another person in our group. They were just as delicious as the first time I ordered them and our guest was really impressed as well. I'll go again and would recommend the restaurant to others--just be sure to face the windows!

Amazing!!!

Fantastic little place. Beautiful view. The food was as good as home cooked. Staff was very friendly with my requests.

Perfect location and prices are good but service and quality of food is important too.

I've only been for breakfast. Anything I order is fast to arrive and delicious. And service is great! And you can beat the view!

The new Surf Diner's décor was nice but preferred Nibil's more rustic look. Breakfast was very good except for the very weak coffee. Between the 8 of us, we had about everything on the breakfast menus and there were no complaints. My biscuits and gravy were very good. We were kind of scared going in for dinner as there were only four people in there for dinner at 6:00 but the food was not bad. I had the Penne Polo Vento and was not disappointed. Overall, the service was very good, prices were very family friendly and the food wasn't bad but could use some improvements. Hopefully by next summer they will work all of the bugs out and it will be the place to go. I wish them luck.

"The view is amazing right on the pier overlooking the beach. The food was excellent. Fast service and fair price. Will definitely be back."
