The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. For lunch today, the salmon was perfectly grilled. Broccoli was excellent and seasoned well. Possibly the healthiest lunch in town(if you don't eat the garlic rolls), and for $8.00! A group of servicemen and servicewomen were meeting to say goodbye to their comrade over lunch. They seemed to be enjoying their lunch and were well taken care of by the staff. Dining room is unpretentious but clean and neat. I plan to have the salmon for lunch every time I am in town.

I must preface my review by mentioning that I recently relocated to Sumter after 14 wonderful years in Italy. Moving from Italy to Sumter is culture shock in itself but imagine my dismay to find that there is only one Italian restaurant in the entire town...and it is owned by a Greek couple. Overall, Sambinos is not terrible, they do have a couple of dishes that are actually quite tasty. But to call this an Italian restaurant is a bit of a stretch. The first time we went I ordered the grilled mahi mahi which tasted good but was served on a big old pile of cheese grits. As I mentioned, the owners are Greek and that comes across in some of the food that is served here such as their Greek salads, which are very good. The one thing on the menu that I love is the Chicken Fellini (chicken with artichokes, mushrooms and tomatoes served with angel hair pasta) but it is completely overpriced (15 bucks for a dish that should cost 10, tops). My kids love their pizza although I think it is average at best. Another problem is the wine - they have a couple decent options for red wine but they serve it too warm. Red wine should be served between 60-65 degrees, not at room temperature, which is at least 70 and causes the wine to taste flat and lifeless. You expect that from chain places like Chili's or Applebees but a place that bills itself as fine Italian dining should know better, especially when they are charging me $6 per glass. They have a Sunday "buy one entree, get one free" which sounds enticing but do not be fooled. You must choose from a set menu and the price of one entree is $16 and the portions are pretty small so you're not really getting much of a bargain at all. Sort of like doubling the price and then advertising it at 50% off so people think they are getting a deal. We eat here semi-regularly because after so many years in Italy I often crave Italian food and this is pretty much the closest thing I can get without driving an hour. I will say that the place is usually pretty full so it seems to be very popular with the locals. They can get away with overcharging for their small, mediocre portions because let's face it, they really have no competition for "Italian" dining in Sumter but if a decent Italian place ever opens up here, I wonder how long Sambino's will be able to compete .

Pretty decent Italian food for the area. The Veal Marsala and Greek chicken were good.

Dinner service was super slow even though there was only three other tables. The garlic knots were under cooked, the chardonnay was warm, and the Chicken Fellini just mediocre. The server was nice, but didn't know anything about the food on the menu or the wine selection. Save your money and go someplace else!

For the most part the atmosphere and service were great, but we ran into several snags that brought us to give Sambinos such a low score. Snag #1: We didn't order starters just entrees, and yet our meals took 40 minutes to make it to the table. There were only two other tables seated when we arrived so this delay was a shock. Snag #2: The portion to price ratio is definitely off. My meal was the Southern Fried Scallops and Shrimp. There were two scallops cut in half to make four pieces and about six shrimp. While it was definitely tasty it shouldn't have had an $18 price point. I've paid less for a scallop starter at the Blue Marlin in the Vista in Columbia and received five full diver sea scallops (roughly only $9). Snag #3: My husband ordered the Mediterranean Seafood. The portion was small and included a nice LONG WHITE HAIR. All for the whopping price of $18. They did however remove the price of this entrée from our bill. Snag #4: There was a water leak from the AC onto our table. They brought a napkin and placed it on the table, but we weren't offered another table. Given that there were only five tables seated at this point (including ours), there was plenty of seating.
