I was TDY for a 5-week class at Shaw Air Force Base when some classmates suggested I try Baker's Sweets for a healthier meal. I came in very skeptical about finding a bakery in Sumter. I was not ready for how good this place was. Talk about a treat! Being extremely critical, the service is not phenomenal, it is a bit slow and awkward, however the food makes up for the service. I highly recommend the Baked Potato Soup, as well as the pasta salad. However, nothing I ate here was anything short of delicious.

Well I messed up. I moved here to Sumter 2 days ago. My apartment is on the same street as Baker's Sweets and their tantilizing sign quickly caught my attention. I resisted the urge for all of 20 hours. Being that I'm in a new city with no friends and not much to do, I decided to indulge in some baked goods. A lemon bar, red velvet cookie, and fun-fetti cookie later, I'm full, happy, and satisfied. I'll be back, more times than I'll probably admit. I can't wait to try everything else in that display case.

I had high expectations coming here and had a MASSIVE craving for red velvet. They ran out of red velvet cake earlier but still had a few red velvet cupcakes left. Knowing they ran out of the cake I was SURE this was the real deal! I was happy to get the cupcake since they told me it's the same recipe--- as soon as I got back to my place, I took a bite and... It tasted like bland barely-any-chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting. WHY??? the bakery looked legit AND fancy! Why would you serve such... such... disapointment?! Just to be sure, I called to make sure my taste buds were correct. I called and asked if they used vinegar making red velvet... they said no. WHY WOULD YOU MAKE FAKE RED VELVET?????? Your bakery is a cheat. No real bakery makes red velvet without vinegar.

We have had the desserts from here quite a bit. Never a meal before today. We will be back here for lunch. Ray had a philly cheesesteak that he raved about and I got a veggie wrap with a great red pepper feta cheese spread. Just enough heat.

Awesome place! The chicken salad is delicious, as is the coffee. One of my favorite places to head when I need a midweek treat!

Their food is okay, but a little overpriced. Their coffee drinks are not prepared the way that they are supposed to be, although they taste pretty good (for example just using chocolate syrup for mochas). The quality of their food seems to have gone down since their expansion. The service there always feels rushed and the servers are kind of rude. They don't acknowledge you when you come in if they are busy. A simple "I'll be right with you," would be nice. Their special occasion cakes are good though. I liked the peanut butter one.

I'm slowly working my way through their menu, and have yet to find something that I haven't liked. While I would say it's a little bit on the expensive side (compared to other options in the area), the quality is consistently good, something that can be difficult to find. There's something for everyone. Their selection of sweets is enormous. The macarons are always perfect and the cakes are heavenly. The atmosphere inside is great- it's nice and cozy. There's some construction going on right now so it can be a little difficult to get to, but the extra effort is worth it.

Pricey menu... Had the spicy turkey and salami sandwich ... Way to much salami, not enough turkey

It hits the spot on everything. It is in my opinion the best bakery in Sumter. Always very friendly and everything is always fresh! From the best cheese Danish to their amazing skillets. It's never a let down. Almost too good!

I had such an unforgivably awful experience my first time here that unfortunately I will never visit again. From the front to the kitchen it was a disaster for me, and it was so bad that 3 strikes were delivered in one fateful takeout order. After ordering and waiting 20 minutes I was eager to fly home and eat lunch with my family. I arrived home and saw that the two slices of coveted cheesecake that I had paid for were missing. I flew back, and was met first with incredulity then a half hearted apology as my cheesecake was still sitting out on the counter. I flew home. The kids meal had two paltry pieces of chicken and a mound of soggy, unappetizing fries. His butter muffin that was supposed to be included was not there at all. My husbands' order of an Italian dip was ok, nothing special, and again with the soggy fries. My Reuben was ho-hum, with barely any dressing, and the broccoli salad I was looking forward to was replaced with- you guessed it- another freaking mound of gross fries. I'm too pissed right now to even try the cheesecake because if it sucks I'm gonna lose it. All for $40. I've been had!! I didn't have the energy to go back for the third time today or to give a spit enough to call and complain. Complain for what? A comp meal at a place that I won't go back to? Nope. Nopity nope nope. I'm so, sooo very disappointed as I had waited a while to finally try this place, it's close to home, etc. C'est la vie. :(

Love this place for breakfast dates with my family! The breakfast skillet is delicious!

Excellent food. Everything is homemade and delicious. I could've eaten there everyday.

I've visited this establishment many times in the few years I've lived in Sumter. Never had a bad baked good. The red velvet items can be a little dry other than that its all good! For a child's first birthday they will give you a free jumbo cupcake. Now that they've expanded not only in size but also the menu they have a coffee bar, larger dining room and baked goods counter also serve beer and wine. Service is always good but they can take a little while on the food when busy. Lunch menu is good but not amazing. Sandwiches are good and food is always fresh. Wish they were open on Sunday mornings bc if you want muffins and such on Sunday you have to buy them on Saturday. One of the few restaurants in the area I'm going to miss when I move.

I am one tough critic, mainly because I have a restaurant career, but I am hard pressed to find something even slightly out of place. Just enough decoration for a bistro, music selection perfect, super clean, service friendly and honest, small but eclectic beer and wine selection (all anheuser Busch), the food of course is good-- literally the best burger I have ever eaten-- don't get me started on the sweets! And last but not least beautiful easy natural light and the price isn't bad either. It's a must for out of towners and locals alike.

I had previously given this place a less than stellar review based on my first few times but after the last few times I feel a correction is in order. The shortcomings I experienced before seem to have been corrected and I must say, this place is becoming one of our favorites in town. They updated their menu not too long ago and the new offerings are really good. My oldest son usually only orders burgers and fries but he has become a huge fan of the roast beef and fontina sandwich and gets it every time now. Myself, I am partial to the Tuscan chicken wrap. They also added beer and wine to the menu which is a welcome addition as I usually enjoy a beer or a glass of wine with my meal although admittedly their wine selection is not very good. It's mostly fruit flavored sweet wines with one mediocre chardonnay on offer. They do have prosecco which is perfect for their brunch although they sometimes run out. As I said, they have improved markedly over the past couple months and every visit there has been spot on in that time. It seems like they added staff as well which has helped and of course the wait staff has always been great. We are grateful for a place like this in a town dominated by cookie-cutter chain restaurants.

Baker's Sweets is delicious, and surprisingly great for any meal of the day! They have tasty sandwiches and amazing pastries. They have different menu options for each meal of the day, and you can always have dessert! (I know everyone out there might not be as crazy as me about sweets, but having the option to eat a cookie at 8:00am in the morning is always nice.) They are a little more pricey then the standard bakery, but it is worth it. I highly suggest their pasta salad as a side with your meal. :)

I loved it here! I've only been once but the experience was nice. The people that work there were really friendly. The food was also really good I had a chicken salad and the dessert was amazing cheesecake strawberry swirl! Must try in sumter sc.

Love bringing folks here for lunch, the atmosphere is always cheerful and the ambiance is bright. The sandwiches are absolutely delicious, made with high quality meats and cheese. They also don't tend to go overboard on the dressings, so the tastes are subtle. I also think I may be addicted to the broccoli salad. The deserts alone deserve a whole review of their own. The "oozy-gooey" brownies are a particular favorite of mine. My birthday cake this year also came from here and I will admit I polished it off in just a few days with almost no help. Friendly service and consistent quality keeps bringing me back here!

This place is great. The historic district needs something like this. Coffee, deli sandwiches, soups and freshly baked goods. I wish it were closer to me! I would come everyday for coffee!

Bakers Sweets has been around the local area for about 15yrs. They have some really good deserts that are sure to please almost any one's palet. They can create custom cakes, wedding, thematic style and generic cakes. They also do a variety menu of lunch menu items, soups and salads, as well as some specialty items that are more seasonal in nature. The issue I have with this business is first and foremost, pricing and expense. Though the Quality of the deserts are above average, to even well above average, The price points for a generic cake starting at 20 dollars is really high. Maybe I dont know much about the baking industry, but I can bake at least 10 cakes, with all of the standard ingredients for under 15 bucks. Granted, this is a privately owned business and they can charge whatever they want for a cake, but I find that I , as well as many others I have spoken to about this place say the same thing, and they have strayed away because of that same issue. I'm not saying its not good cakes and pies... because they are.. I do think that they could adjust their pricing a bit though as I have had as good of cakes in other bakerys' that are several dollars cheaper and just as good. Thus my review of a 3... otherwise this place would easily make a 4 rating. Their coffee selections are good, though some of their barista's need more training or possibly just have attention span problems and have led to several incorrectly made drinks or just overly sweet. That said, starbucks has the same issues with their drinks some of the time as well, since that establishement would be their most direct competetor for coffee. all in all, this is a good place, that just charges a little too much for some items, but they do a good job at what they do.

Visiting from Arizona!!! My husband is stationed at shaw afb and lives right down the street from this bakery/restaurant and took me there for brunch . it's amazing!

One of my favorite places in Sumter!!!! Love all their sweet treats! Service is usually fast and friendly. Great coffee too!

Baker's sweets was one of the best restaurants to hit this one-horse town. When I lived there a few years ago, I was having a serious relationship with their baked potato soup... I mean good gracious that stuff is good. I often reminence of the times we shared, my soup and me. I have searched near and far to find a place that emulates it... not even close. This is one of the only reasons that would bring me back for a visit to ole Sumter... and maybe a few old friends!

Great atmosphere and customer service. Asset to the Sumter community. Most amazing cheesecakes!
(5)Joanna B.
I stopped in here Friday afternoon looking for a little special something to celebrate the weekend! I've never in my life experienced such rude service. The girls working behind the counter, while young, should certainly display better customer service. The customer service I experienced here alone are the reason for the 2 stars. I don't feel as if I should be made to feel like I'm inconveniencing you because I'm asking you to do your job. Now on to what I purchased: my husband loved the red velvet cheesecake and I thought the triple chocolate layer cake was very good, very moist. My daughter did not care for the M&M blondie, as it was more like 1/2 brownie, 1/2 blondie. My daughter did however love her Orange Creamsicle smoothie! Hope that the customer service can be improved greatly in this location.

Good food, Best coffee in town. Try the iced Americano!!! Great sweets. Service is ok though very slow most times. Don't go if your in a rush
(4)Lindsey G.
LOVE IT! A bit pricey but worth it to treat yourself. THey have so many yummy things and a fun coffee selection. Snickerdoodle coffee is alright with me. Pretty sure the "carmelita" gave my husband diabetes - but he still enjoyed it. We haven't personally had lunch here but I've heard it is very good as well. For Sumter - this place gets 5 stars for sure.

This is one of the best bakeries in SC. If you are in Sumter, stop in. Pineapple, Coconut, Rum Muffins are the best.
(5)Kyle K.
As far as sweets this place is the best in town. A Starbucks is opening in town and I strongly urge you to skip them over and find this cafe/bakery just a few blocks over. Their drink selection is just as good as their baked goods. Their Red Velvet Cake is a favorite in our house so be sure to try it! Like I said skip the chain coffee houses and be sure to check this place out! They also have a lunch menu.

When I was stationed here, I couldnt get enough of this place. I had to stop because I started gainng weight. Their pastries and turkey wraps were scrumptious. I took my sis in law and she fell in love. If I ever come back to Sumter, I will make a stop here. The workers are super nice too.

The ONLY thing I've tasted is the Praline Cake (not sure if thats the right name). It is amazing. You only need a small slice to get your fill as it is very sweet. Its similar to a caramel cake but kicked up to the next level. I bought an entire cake for only $24. (With the Military discount on Monday) This cake is sure to last a looong while because a little goes a long way. Once you taste it...you will never forget it! Theres a small sitting area in the shop. The bathrooms were clean...thats always a positive. The place very quaint and cozy. Looks like a great spot to meet friends for a chat. They also have a deli menu, gourmet coffees, and a large variety of sweet desserts. Great lil local spot.

Amazing. So much so, I slapped my mom for never baking like this. :-P More serious though, this place really is worth all 5 stars! It's amazing. My girl and I grabbed treats to eat ASAP, and for a bit later, so we had big eyes. The place is small, but not in a cramped way. More like a small cafe way. Their display case both in front and behind the counter has a good selection, and there is a small coffee/espresso bar in the corner. We skipped to coffee (we're not fans), but had picked out some deserts. Going with the chocolate chunk and sugar cookie(s), a brownie, and banana pudding. But, before completing check out we asked the girls behind the counter if there was a desert we might be missing out on. They both, quickly and almost in unison, raved about the praline cake. So, we added that to the box. This stuff was great, the praline cake was just heavy enough to taste amazing, but not so heavy you felt you couldn't finish it. Very tasty with the occasional 'light' crunch from the mixed in pralines. Just devine. The cookies and brownie were soft, not to rich, and just great. We enjoyed every bite, and followed ALMOST each bite up with "mmmmmmmmm"'s. The pudding didn't taste quite as great as others we've had, but still very good. We plan to continue to visit this location and try more of their desserts or even sandwiches. Highly recommended!

I eat at Baker's Sweets about once a month and am really a big fan of the place. Overall, it's an excellent restaurant and bakery. Favorite items include the vegetarian quiche, ciabatta club sandwich, and loaded baked potato soup. Within the last year they have expanded their space and their menu and I have been less than thrilled with the new offerings. I've had the chicken tenders, shrimp and grits, and today had the cinnamon roll French toast and while each one was good, none of those items excited me enough to have them again. The breakfast skillet that I had last month was quite good though. It really is impossible to "go wrong" with any item here though. Especially the desserts. I highly recommend the Nutty Praline Cake.
