Grilled cheese with bacon, Brie, tomato, and cheddar? HEAVEN

First place my wife and I ate when we moved here. Super cool and delicious. We still remember the piece of chocolate cake like it came out of a movie.

I came here today with some family members. We got one of the chicken paninis with chicken veggie rice soup combo and the chicken salad on texas toast with pasta salad. The chicken panini was quite good, especially if you like food on the more creamy/cheesy side. The chicken salad was okay. I wished it was sweeter like panera's napa almond chicken salad sandwich. The pasta salad was okay. It consisted of pasta and olives and the dressing reminded me of asian sesame dressing and was too sweet for my liking. I wished I tried the potato salad instead since a lot of reviewers raved about it. Overall, food was pretty good and the kindness of the staff made the place even more likeable!

Great meal! The turkey brie and apple sandwich is to die for and I couldn't put it down. Friendly staff all around! Will definitely come back when in the Summerville area again :)

Not many vegetarian offerings so I ordered the Greek Salad. The salad is overpriced because it was sprinkled lightly with feta cheese and they don't use high quality olives. Croutons are rare on Greek salad and they tasted like they came out of a box. The salad was fresh and crispy. Greek dressing was acceptable but not the best I have had. My daughter had the chicken Caesar wrap and she said it was okay. I doubt I will be back. There are better places around.

I grabbed lunch here today and I'm so glad I did! I got the Turkey with Brie, Bacon, & Apple with a side salad and a sweet tea. The sandwich was amazing; the type of bread they used was perfect for the sandwich and the apples were crisp. I was pleasantly surprised by the side salad; it was a good-sized portion with fresh, quality ingredients. I chose raspberry vinaigrette as my dressing. My eyes lit up when I realized they have an iced tea bar! You can choose raspberry, peach, or regular sweeten and unsweetened tea. Also, counter service is a plus!

Really good place for lunch. Great pricing. It's a walk up and order type of place. Had the cobb salad and chicken/veggies/rice soup lunch combo. The soup was amazing, only one that makes soup this good is my wife. Lol. The Cobb salad was great, nice chunks of most chicken breast, crisp fresh all sorts of greens, thin crispy bacon. So good. I would definitely visit again. Oh yea forgot to add, I bought a piece is coconut cake to go and was really moist.

Sometimes food can take you to a special place and make you reminisce about your childhood. I'm not sure if it was the picturesque Summerville setting, the gorgeous weather or just a damn good salad. Easy, unassuming food with excellent execution. Everyone around me was saying "mmmm". I have to agree.

Good place for lunch. The blackened chicken caesar wrap was very good! The special sandwich was a turkey and cheese with a sun dried tomato pesto. One problem, there was no sun dried tomato pesto on it. It was a good turkey and cheese sandwich though. Great selection of iced teas. We bought some blueberry muffins out of the display case for the next day that looked amazing. Unfortunately, they were rather flavorless. Will visit again when in the area.

This hidden gem is great for lunch! Such great homemade dishes packed with so much flavor. Highly recommend!

Since moving here 3 months ago, eclectic chef has been on my list of places to eat. Often, with all the great restaurants in Charleston, that is where we go when we want to eat out. However, I'm starting to realize Summerville has a lot to offer. Eclectic Chef did not disappoint! The food was so incredibly fresh and flavorful. You could smell the greens the moment they landed on the table, but it was the goat cheese that made the salads. I love goat cheese, and the warm soft, flavorful goat cheese here was one of the best I've had. Really complemented the vinaigrette dressings. Also tried two of the sandwiches, the turkey with Brie and the Tuscan chicken panini. The Turkey and Brie was good, but I didn't think it was worth all the hype. The bread to meat ratio was a little high, but good flavors. The Tuscan panini was on point though, and was everyone's favorite. I will go back for that sandwich and those salads! Thank you for the great meal.

I've tried Eclectic Chef half a dozen times, and it's always been a let down. Their desserts are their best options they have; their lunches aren't anything special.

Stopped here for a quick lunch. I had the Joyce wrap; it was amazing. Very fresh; and full of flavor. I got the pasta salad too; it was good. The gobs were good too! And so was the sweet tea. It's a very cute little place to grab a fresh lunch.

What a magical little find! I took my Mother-In-Law here for lunch yesterday, and we were so pleased that we ate at The Eclectic Chef. They have a very good selection of soups, salads, sandwiches, and wraps. The menu caters to omnivores and vegetarians alike, so finding something delicious is not going to be a problem for anyone who eats here. The dining area is small, but there is a lot of seating outdoors in the courtyard, and fortunately for Summerville, the weather is lovely enough that sitting outside most of the year is comfortable. We arrived about 11:30 and grabbed a pair of menus, seated ourselves and looked over our choices. My mother-in-law decided on the house salad with chicken, and I the portabello, chicken, and goat cheese wrap with a side salad. You have to go to the counter to order and pay, but then they do bring the food out to you, so its not terribly inconvenient. How was the food? It was, without a doubt, one of the best lunches I have eaten in a very long time. My mother-in-law's salad was a perfect portion with tons of chopped chicken on the top. I was stunned when I bit into my wrap! The flavors and textures were to perfectly balanced. There was not too much mushroom, or too much goat cheese, the chicken was marinated PERFECTLY, and the arugula back note was like someone singing 4 part harmony to my taste buds! I cannot wait for my next trip to The Eclectic Chef to try something new! As a veteran Charleston chef myself, I can say that this little gem in Summerville, makes me happy to know that great food is alive and well, not just on the peninsula, but around the entire Low Country!!!

I've been wanting to check this spot out for some time and finally got a chance. I tried them for lunch last Saturday with my mom, daughter and niece. There was a variety of sandwiches, salads, sides, drinks and sweets to get a good idea of what Eclectic Chef has to offer. They use quality ingredients, the end result is very tasty and the prices are wonderful! I tried a bite of my daughter's potato salad and her grilled cheese.. yum! She said it was the best grilled cheese she's had in her entire life AND took home half of it, but ate it moments after getting home. I ordered the half salad/sandwich combo of the black & bleu salad with the turkey, brie, bacon & apple sandwich. That salad was massive! No skimping anywhere on the toppings for the salad or sandwich. Very, very good. My niece thought her cuban was just okay and didn't seem to care for the sweetness it had, but she did like it. My niece and mom both enjoyed all of their lunch. We tried the coconut cake, red velvet cupcake, brownie, something that looked while a whoopie pie but they called it something else, and a orange lemon bar. The whoopie pie thing was okay, the brownie was more like a spice cake with lots of additions so didn't read as a brownie to me at all, but the other sweets were very good. The coconut cake was AH-MAZING!!!!!!!!! Hefty portions there too. Normally I don't give 5 stars to anyone if I've only tried them once and if there are any negatives however Eclectic Chef earns 5 stars from me for a combination of tasty, quality ingredients at excellent prices. Oh I almost forgot! I don't even like tea, but tried a sip of my niece's flavored tea (peach mango?? can't recall) and it was REALLY GOOD! I plan to try their flavored tea next time because I was that impressed.

Chef Ben's Eclectic Chef is a little gem that you don't always think about, but you are so happy you did when you get there. Tucked away in the little walkway of downtown Summerville, EC churns out lunches that are really bigger than life, both in size and flavor. Take the Turkey and Brie. I have seen this sandwich while I lived up north and was constantly underwhelmed by a dry lack of flavor hidden amidst a world of pretention. This is not Ben's; fluffy, well seasoned focaccia holding immense portions of juicy turkey and creamy brie. That's what I love about EC, there is a lot of sophistication without pretention. It's honest flavor, talent, and care about details. Example, I ordered an ice coffee, and the ice cubes were made out of frozen coffee so the last sips would not be watered down!!! EC is perfect for a lunch with the family or on your own. And they also cater for any kind of occasion, of which we have taken advantage of on countless occasions.

Great food, good prices, friendly staff, nice atmosphere! (And free parking right around the corner)
(5)Dariel S.
I just ate lunch here and had the Tuscan chicken sandwich which was great but the barbecue pork and white bean soup was over the top. Nice place for lunch.
(5)Kayley K.
It was delicious! I got the french dip sandwich and it was unique in it's own way and simply one of the best I've ever had. Everything seemed very fresh. The salad was good too and I really liked their ranch dressing. I can't wait to return. I don't even typically like lemon water and even that was great!
(5)Reba C.
Love EC! Chicken, bacon, ranch sandwich is my go to. Soups are also delicious! You can't go wrong with whatever you chose. They always have great daily specials.
(5)Todd S.
This is about the best sandwich shop I've found in the Charleston area. They use better ingredients than your typical chain sandwich shop. The roast beef sandwich is phenomenal. They have an indoor eating area, and there is an outdoor eating area as well although I am not sure if that is shared by other restaurants or not. The only thing that keeps me from giving this place five stars is the layout of the place. There's not much they can do about it, but the line to place your order is literally right next to where a lot of the indoor seating is located. So close, in fact, that people cannot squeeze by. This is the same path to the drink fountain and restrooms. Seems like seating people and taking their orders instead of having them order from the counter might be a better game plan.

I have ate here many times....never had a bad meal here...they do have out door dining...everyone one eats here...families...kids...everyone!
(5)Jackie O.
I think Eclectic Chef is amazing! The food is always so good and so is the service. My favorite menu item is the Turkey with Brie, Bacon & Apple. It's has the perfect balance of flavors and the perfect addition of crunch from the apple and bacon. I also love the D'Anjou Pears & Warm Goat Cheese on Mixed Greens Salad. I tend to get the Sandwich and 1/2 Salad combo, which is more than enough food. Their desserts are also delicious. Haven't had anything that I dislike! My only negatives are that the space is kinda small, so it always looks cluttered toward the back.
(5)Hillary B.
What a delightful find! Great salad and half sandwich combo today while seated outside in the shade. Large portions , many selections of iced teas, varies selection if sandwiches and wraps, very enjoyable!
(4)Ann H.
Stopped at this charming deli on our way to the Biedler Forest. Had a great Cuban sandwich with potato salad and Greek salad.
(4)Tracey H.
Their potato salad is as good as mine, and I make the best potato salad in the world. This is my favorite summerville restaurant. So far, everything I have tried was delicious. Fun vibe in the courtyard with an a 70's mellow music station playing.

This review is based on two visits to the Eclectic Chef: Let me begin by saying I like everything about this cute little eatery, the concept, menu and location. EC is nestled between a few other quaint shops and restaurants, away from any cars whizzing by, or sidewalk traffic, which makes the outdoor seating experience quite enjoyable. The powerhouse daily record Post and Courier's rated the EC ''Lunch Counter of the Year 2005''. As a rule of thumb--I don't put much stock in that paper's opinions, and somehow they manage to keep serving up the reasons keep giving me more. No wonder paper media is dying. Living in NYC I have many food memories of great lunch foods being served at counters. EC shares in the category of wonderful lunch offerings, each menu items seems well thought out, balanced flavors and textures with a little occasional risk thrown into a panini (IE: sun-dried tomato mayo) or in a sandwich (warm goat cheese and pesto mayo) are a few simple examples. Thus far I have had the Pork Cuban and the Chicken Parm panini's both were a little light on the meats, and just didn't have that flavor intensity I felt they would upon reading the menu. I would not say the items were bland, but they seemed to be missing an X factor, something to turn a B- sandwich/panini into an A+ sandwich. I had the tomato soup (possibly with basil), I do not see it on the internet menu anymore, which was a bit clumpy and not hot. I realize the climate here in S.C. is more hot than cool-but that should not change the fact that soup is served hot barring gazpacho and a few others I imagine I am unaware of. The Tomato soup's flavor was just OK as well, so all three menu items are getting the same grade. Inside EC it is a wonderfully decorated, unpretentious atmosphere-the flavored H2o is a nice touch. The website is clean, well laid out and smart with interesting services, such as the Personal Chef and a nice bio on the EC himself, clearly a intelligent, hardworking man with vision. I will keep going to EC, as I feel I may have just not chosen well off the menu, I have little concern my re review (update) will express the true greatness that is the Eclectic Chef.

I am not rushing to go back there. Everybody talked about how great the food was and it was good but they forgot to mention don't go hungry because it will take forever to get your food. We waited over 30 minutes for a salad and there wasn't many people in there. We were all done eating before my daughter got her food.
(3)Kristie S.
By far the best sandwich place. They have the most interesting combinations on their specials every week!
(5)Josie N.
I am generally not terribly impressed by the fresh and fancy food in this area, but the eclectic chef was a nice exception. For example, I find that most goat cheese salads I've had in the Charleston/Summerville area either have far too little goat cheese or are drowning in the stuff. Eclectic Chef's had some wonderful proportions in everything we ordered. Their veggie quesadilla was equally delicious. Their potato salad could use a little punch, but was a decent base standard version. As a vegetarian, I liked all the options (again, somewhat rare in this area), but the menu was largely meat-friendly. A good deal for the price; I'll be back!

A really great place to stop by and get lunch or dinner with a quaint outdoor setting if you prefer to eat outside. I had the portobello mushroom, goat cheese, grilled chicken with roasted peppers and brie on a panini, and it was awesome. So awesome that we went back just a day later and had another. Try the unsweet raspberry tea and mix it with the sweet peach tea. There's a 10% military discount too.

My sister just moved to Summerville, and the 2 experiences I've had with lunch venues (here and The Mustard Seed) have told me that just being 30 minutes close to Charleston = excellent food. This was another terrific lunch choice. Frito pie! They had frito pie! Chili and corn chips and cheese and sour cream--a mix of tasty goodness. My dad got that, and it was wonderful! I'm sorry I missed it. I misread the menu and thought I could get a half sandwich and a half salad, so I got the french dip and the black and blue salad. But instead it was a WHOLE sandwich + the salad, which was a lot of food. The French dip was quite tasty, as was the salad. My mom and sis both got the chicken salad in a wrap, but i was hoping someone would get the potato salad--i love potato salad. They both got the pasta salad, but it was a little odd (i rarely have good pasta salad, and this didn't really change that fact)--brown (I think they used balsamic vinegar?) and kind of heavy. Again, I'm not a big pasta salad fan, so I'm not the best judge. But they loved the chicken salad. I loved their sweet tea, and they had sweet cold chai, too. Very tasty. I heard great things about the desserts, but we were too full to eat another bite. Seriously though--get the Frito pie, man. Delicious!

So I just discovered this place about 6 months ago and I'm kicking my self for not trying it sooner! I have been about 6 or 7 times so far. The food is so delicious! I try something new every time I go and have not been disappointed yet! It's such a great place in such a perfect location!
(5)Julia R.
I was disappointed today. Read the reviews and expected better. The menu looks amazing and the selections are varied with lots of healthy options. Unfortunately, the service was not great. I waited in line with no menu so I had to quickly decide upon arriving to the counter. The cashier was not very friendly nor was he helpful. When I got my order, it was not the bread that was listed on the menu. Perhaps this was just an off day, but I was disappointed. The bright spot was the really nice guy who delivered my food. Very friendly and nice. I did not feel welcomed as a new customer.

We stopped here for a quick bite to eat while walking around Summerville. What a cute place! We ate outside at one of the umbrellaed tables. We ordered inside and then our food was brought out. The staff is very nice, friendly and helpful. I had the turkey, apple and Brie sandwich on foci bread. It was delicious, the bread tasted homemade and it was huge- I had to take half home. My daughter had the strawberry blues salad which she said was very tasty and my son-in-law had the chicken barbecue quesadilla which he said was very good. A very pleasant lunch experience, good food, relaxing and nice staff. A hit!
(4)Jenn A.
Had the turkey, bacon, Brie, and apple on focaccia...it was so delicious and fresh! There's a Saturday farmer's market right around the corner, so it gets a little busy, but totally worth the wait!
(5)Trinity M.
Wonderful food and equally fantastic staff. When in doubt choose the pasta salad!

The Eclectic Chef is a nice little spot on Short Central street in the heart of historic downtown Summerville. They closed off the street, placing some tables out in the middle and are trying to do more with the area to recapture the vibrancy and "community feel" that Summerville used to have back in the good 'ol days my wife's octogenarian patients wax poetically about. - The desserts are outstanding. We're talking village bakery-level (Old Village). Sure, there is better in the entire metro area but this gets you to the 95% level in terms of pure and unadulterated awesome. Roaming about town for that extra 5% of awesome can sometimes be more trouble than it's worth and other times outright painful. - ladies or even men that don't mind me calling them a sissy will love the salads. Heck, I think the salads are great - cool combinations of ingredients. - Sandwiches... almost earned them a 3 star but I've only had one kind. I do not recommend the cuban pork panini - looked great but the marinade tasted like bottled vinaigrette salad dressing and the meat had no flavor whatsoever on it's own. Potato salad was pretty good. The rest of the sandwiches on the menu look great though and they take risks with their specials. The chicken boursin sandwich had watermelon on it and got good reviews from my friends. - owner is super-nice. He used to trade us desserts for foods back when I worked at a competing restaurant. That restaurant went out of business and so did the next one or two after it, but the Eclectic chef is still going strong. Good for them - that is the trick of restaurants. Find a niche and completely own it. - If you like coffee, they have "Seattle's Best". Coffee turns me into a spaz so I don't know if that brand is good or bad - gourmet meals to go. I love to cook so it will probably be awhile before I try this but rock on - many people don't like to cook so that's a good service. - they handle catering and even will be your personal chef. When I look at all that entails, all I can think is "Wow! How much does that cost?" - free wi-fi. Looks like I found a new place to get some work done. - seem to recall the hours being a bit quirky so call ahead to make sure they're open. I always seem to pass by on a Saturday 10 minutes after they closed but forgot to lock the door. If you go for lunch get there early or late because it looks like Summerville has finally caught on. That is good because nobody can keep a business live over on Short Central unless they're pouring booze. That is a shame (not the booze part), because it is such a cool spot with a few fun activities and big shady trees in close proximity.
(4)Rob L.
A friend and I stopped by for lunch one Saturday and saw they had Frito Pie on the menu! I had not had that in years! It was excellent, much better than what I make at home, and the restaurant has such a friendly atmosphere. The owner and executive chef even visited our table to ensure we were enjoying our meal. I recommend The Eclectic Chef to all of my friends.
