Direct from the name of this place you should first know the rolls here are HUGE! I scoured Yelp to help find a true sushi bar and this was the best of the lot. For good reason too because the place was just perfect. The rolls were great and I couldn't be more impressed. Most importantly they will always leave a mark with me based on being served a sushi roll that was literally on fire when presented to the table. That was a first for me and hard to forget! Service was great and the decor was trendy chic.

We ate here for lunch and came back as suggested. The night crowd is WAY different with a live DJ, great drinks and the same great service. This location is less touristy than the Broadway location but still packed and a lot of fun!

There is nothing special about King Kong Sushi. Their regular sushi is decent, absolutely nothing unique or special. They appear to pride themselves on dozens of specialty rolls, most of which appear to be various combinations of avocado and spicy mayonnaise. If you really, really crave sushi, it's fine. If you don't actually like sushi and want rolls filled with not-sushi, it's also fine. If you want mediocre hibachi grill, go to any one of the dozens of other places in the area for half the price. Meh.

Good food, fun atmosphere, ideal location. We tried a couple different rolls and they were pretty good. It wasn't the BEST sushi I have ever had but it was decent. The menu was creative and there were a lot of unique flavor combinations. The service was very good. The manager approached our table a couple times to make sure we were okay, which was really nice! The drinks were a little "weak." I didn't feel like their drink specials were all that special and the "mixed" drinks we tried were heavy on the triple sec. We actually asked the bartender about the drinks and he was a little "too school for school." I think someone told him that all bartenders are considered hot so he had a right to act like an arrogant punk because every girl would be pining after him but what he failed to realize is that he didn't fit the movie star hot bartender stereotype at all. So, that was annoying...needless to say. However, our manager-friend resurfaced and doctored up our drinks for us so we could actually enjoy our cocktails. After 10:30pm a DJ showed up and the restaurant turned into more of a lounge. I think this is a popular time among the locals but it is also a fun environment for any visitors. There really wasn't much of a dance floor but there were certainly a few wasted individuals that made their way to the front of the lounge to showcase their interpretive dance moves. Great people-watching if nothing else!

So I'm kinda a snob when it comes to eating Sushi and didn't want to try this place because of it's location in a strip mall. I'm glad I went in and gave it a try. The atmosphere is relaxed. Tables/booths are available. I sat in the bar area at a high table. I ordered their specialty drink...can't remember the name..it comes in a huge bowl and the middle of the 'bowl' has a flame. My husband and I had to make a serious effort to finish it. It is a lot of alcohol. still...Yummmmm! I ordered two typical rolls and one specialty roll. Prices are fair. The food was very good. The sushi tasted fresh and I was very happy with my selection. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. This is definitely going to be on my list to return to when in the MB area. I have zero complaints.

I went here with my husband last weekend and was pleasantly surprised. They have a large sushi menu but also options for those who aren't into that. We ordered the sushi boat special which was had a small order of edamame, an appetizer, 2 soups or salads, 2 nigiri, 4 rolls of sushi and a dessert. That was easily enough food for 4 people and all for about 50 dollars before tax and tip. (Check out the pictures, I posted a few). In my opinion it was a great deal but since I've lived in northern Virginia where the same amount of food would've cost double what we paid, I'm not going to complain. The service was friendly and patient. It took us a while to decide on what we wanted. Their menu is rather extensive so if you can, check out their website first. They have pretty much their full menu online with pictures. I haven't tried their location in Broadway at the Beach but I would imagine that since this is a little more out of the way that it'd have a calmer atmosphere.

Creative, fresh sushi and creative, delicious drinks! I can't say anything negative about this restaurant. The food was terrific, the service was impeccable, the atmosphere was classy. I tried my first riceless roll wrapped with cucumber and was not disappointed. The only downfall to this restaurant is the clientele. Even on a weeknight, an influx of teenage girls in 4 inch heels paraded in after 7 p.m., showing off their too-tight, too-short dresses... annoying!! If you're around the Broadway on the Beach area, be sure to check it out!

I booked a hotel for a 1 night business trip, where I knew there was a japanese hibachi & sushi bar right next door by foot. So driving from Charlotte NC, looking forward to some fish and/or sushi for dinner, wouldn't you know it.... the restaurant was closed, apparently it seemed for good. Total bummer!! I didn't want to drive far since the sky's opened up with rain/thunder/lightning and so within less than a mile I came across King Kong Sushi. I really enjoy sushi but can not say that I am an expert. I just know that I love seafood and for sushi: tuna, salmon, and eel the most :) I was determined to have some fish tonight! I was impressed with the atmosphere. With the dark tinted front windows, you never know what the inside is going to look like. Opened the doors and it was spacious with tasteful lighting, decor, and very neat & clean. They had a large bar and friendly staff. I was only going to have food to-go, so I sat at the bar. There were 3 young adults at the bar and that kept the bartender busy with their experimental "shots". She was still very attentive and friendly with me, however. I arrived also at a slow period between late lunch and early dinner, so it was not busy. I can imagine, however, that this could be a fun place to hang out. Picture it? Atmosphere, drinks, and finger food.... perfect! The menu is extensive and I love that they have pictures and a nice description of their different rolls/ specialty maki's. They serve dinners (cooked meat/fish) too along with pictures - which is nice if someone is not into raw fish. I am impressed with the take out I received because of the portions relative to the price I paid. I did notice that they have daily specials and the night I arrived, it was 20% off all fish orders. I ended up ordering some appetizer shrimp shumai & tuna tataki. I also ordered their chilean sea bass dinner. The Shumai was rather mushy; I am used to munching on firmer pieces of minced shrimp. And the side sauce was rather oily. The tuna tataki was grilled adequately. I like it raw in the middle which it was. The slices were very thin but overall, it was a good appetizer portion but perhaps just slightly overpriced. For the amount, I would expect to pay maybe $8-$9 not $12. They did include sliced ginger, wasabi, and shredded turnip with the tataki. The Chilean Sea Bass Dinner was very satisfying. The sea bass was simply steamed with a "special" sauce over it, but the 3 fish portions was very generous and was "sufficiently fresh". I am not sure if it may have been frozen but I can usually tell... the fish still flaked easily and chewed "fresh" not frozen and there was no smell. In all honesty... I think that if I had "ate in" rather than take out, I suspect the meal would have been even better. Perhaps it was just slightly overcooked being in a take out box. The sea bass laid on a bed of asparagus with a topping of cooked spinach - wonderful :) The sea bass, asparagus, and spinach was all I needed and tasted great. I didn't need the miso soup, white rice, and a small garden salad that came with it. Since this dinner was 20% off, resulting at $18 - a great deal. Next time, and notice I said next time.... I will likely try their sushi or sashimi and ohhh... maybe their hibachi! Some of the other reviews say that it isn't the best sushi they ever had but perhaps the "king kong" implies the portions will satisfy a king kong appetite?

I really liked the menu here with the photos of all the rolls. We went for a late lunch and service was disappointing. Considering no one was there, this shouldn't have been an issue. Our waiter was helpful with recommendations and helping us narrow down selections from the extensive list of rolls, but once he delivered our food we didn't see him until we were finished! We also didn't have napkins that whole time. Obviously, no refills on water or anything. Now, we can eat a lot of sushi very quickly, but this was still poor. The recommendations and good food saved his tip. I'm a softie.

Given that the lady working at my resort recommended this place (her other recommendation was a bust) and this place is located in a tourist trap, the sushi was actually pretty good. I ordered crunchy shrimp and spicy scallop rolls and they were both tasty. Glad I went.

They had toro. They had uni. Fresh real wasabi grated to order for the toro. The hamachi was like butter. They have natto but you have to ask for it. Sit at the bar. The chefs are friendly and fast. I will go back every chance I get. I have not been to broadway location. All good sushi costs money.

Great staff and unique rolls. The decor is nice as well I quite enjoyed all the photos of King Kong. My fiance and I dined outside and made friends with two lil' duckies...well geese. We fed them rice and panko which they loved. Anywho, back to the point, great rolls, friendly attentive staff and its own atmosphere. The experience was very enjoyable. I must say I'm a bit of a sushi snob and I don't handout compliments which is saying a lot for this place. Try it you'll like it.

This is literally my favorite sushi restaurant of all time. I have never eaten sushi this good in my life before I visited here. Me and my boyfriend went on a vacation to Myrtle Beach, and a waitress from the Joe's Crab Shack there actually recommended this place to us, for sushi. Their menu has a big variety of sushi selections to choose from. Also, tastewise, the sushi is AMAZING. Best sushi hands down. I also ordered this mussel appetizer which was very tasty. The waitress we had was very friendly- my boyfriend left his sunglasses here by accident, we came back 10 minutes later and she actually saved it for him. If I lived in Myrtle Beach, I would be hitting this place up 24/7 to fulfill my sushi cravings.

King Kong's may be the "King of Sushi Rolls," but everything else at this cozy sushi restaurant, just off Highway 501, leaves much to be desired. It's staffed with friendly college types, so don't expect too much in the way of attentive service, as they spend much of their time chatting each other up. The sushi chefs themselves are extremely cold fish, and the bartender ignores more people than he serves. To make matters worse, they carry zero in the way of a cold sake selection, so we went with Sapporo beer, which wasn't cold. If you go sit at a table, which will improve you chances of getting decent service, and stick with their amazing sushi roll selection, because everything else needs dramatic improvement.

Maki rolls were good. Place plays their music very loud. Very hard to talk to someone at your table. At 10:30 pm. a DJ sets up and starts playing dance music at an obnoxious level. Place doesn't have dance floor. This made it uncomfortable. We ate and left quickly feeling we walked into the wrong place.

Just like Erin, I ridiculed my boyfriend for wanting sushi at King Kong =) but my constant craving for raw fish won. Amazingly fresh, good choice of rolls and sushi and awesome cocktails. I think they have a deal for half-priced drinks from 10 to 11. My only concern is that the music was way too loud, but I guess I didn't mind it too much. Overall, def worth the money!

my boyfriend and i laughed when we first saw king kong sushi. the name alone made us think that we would never want to eat from there. he takes his sushi very seriously. somehow one day we were in the area and decided to try it and we were pleasantly surprised. they have some great selections, the maui roll is our favorite. the first time our waiter was new so he had to ask someone else when we would ask questions but that's understandable. two times we've gotten free edamame just because. and generally good service. it's not cheap, but then again i'm always sketched out when sushi is cheap. i definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for sushi.

The food here is really nothing special. The presentation is below average and the quality would get two out of five possible stars. Combine that with terrible service and this is a place that I would definitely not recommend or visit with friends. I went here due to a social function with friends. We had a fairly large group and sat in the bar area. Menus were scarce and the servers and bartenders were almost non-existent. Two of the key rules for a restaurant is that your guests shouldn't have to track down a server for a drink refill and they shouldn't have to wait to pay. We had several people in our party who had mistakes on their checks (overcharged) and the concept of removing empty dishes and glasses seemed to be completely foreign to the staff. When you are serving an overpriced novelty item like sushi, you need to be top quality and make people want more. In this place, even the edamame and the salads fell flat. This place is best left to the tourists who are looking for a place to eat and don't care about quality or service.

Wow, what a surprisingly fantastic sushi experience! There's a location at Broadway at the Beach as well, but avoid that one if you wish to avoid the tourist traffic. This location is a bit more out of the way and isn't as annoying. I was originally living in Albany, NY, and my wife and I loved trying out all the different sushi restaurants up there. What we found at King Kong definitely blows Albany's sushi places away. The menu was very extensive with tons of rolls to choose from. The food definitely had a nice, fresh taste to it and we can't wait to go back. We highly recommend the "Golden Boy" roll, which was topped with these amazing sweet potatoes that just really gave the roll a unique texture. The rolls are big, and I'm not sure if it's a King Kong thing or a Myrtle Beach thing. A 1/2 roll at King Kong was the same size as a full roll in New York, so we were getting the same quantity of food at a much lower price. Also, we went on a Thursday night since Thursdays are 20% off all rolls. Three of us shared seven rolls, and it came out to something like $45, which is amazingly cheap for sushi. Highly recommended if you're looking for sushi in Myrtle Beach!

This is a great place to grab sushi. You can dine in or order to go. They have an enormous amount of rolls to choose from.

We went here for lunch one day in the off season. Everyone rants and raves about this place so we had high hopes. Unfortunately, the food was less than stellar and they certainly did not live up to their reputation. Our server sucked and hated life. I had the veggie hibachi and my boyfriend had the chicken hibachi. The entrees were overpriced and terrible. We will not visit again.

Great sushi. We were on vacation and were really craving sushi. This place had 2 locations so we thought it would be a good place to try. Between the 2 of us, we split 4 rolls and had to take some home. The atmosphere was a lot more like a bar than an Asian restaurant, which was great for us because we wanted to see some college football. It's just one big room with a bar at one end and booths on the other, so if you don't want to hear people cheering, that might bother you. Service was great - quick and friendly but definitely didn't bother us too much. We're real low maintenance at restaurants but didn't have to ask for anything extra. All in all it was pretty good sushi for the price. Plus, their menu has pictures of all of the rolls which really helped us decide which we wanted. Their lunch special looked really good too. I would definitely recommend this place to friends and will keep them in mind when we don't want to wait for a restaurant at Broadway.

Well done, King Kong Sushi, well done. I was in Myrtle Beach for the weekend to attend a wedding and we needed something to eat on a Friday night. We strolled thru the 'Broadway at the Beach' area and could not find anything that looked decent and not terribly touritsy filled with woman carrying penis cups. We settled with King Kong sushi and were not expecting much, and man were we shocked. The rolls were GREAT, which is a lot for me to say being that I live in NYC and each sushi at a minumum of once a week. The food was so fresh and delicious. The presentations were great too. Also, there was a DJ which made dinner really fun! I definetly recommend!

Despite the reviews they do have the best sushi in myrtle beach. Expect to pay a premium for it, but very good.

My husband, Andrew V., reviewed this restaurant in March of this year and only gave it two stars. At the time that was a very accurate review, but King Kong Sushi has really improved. The biggest change seems to be the new management. They have muted the TVs and subscribed to a satellite radio service that does not have constant annoying DJ chatter. The restaurant has been expanded, and the new section provides quiet dining seating away from the main bar. Most importantly, the new management seems to have much higher standards for the wait staff. We have not had a single unpleasant experience since we started visiting this restaurant again a few months ago. It looks like they are still doing a good job of serving the college bar crowd. I always see announcements for upcoming specials and attractions. We rarely go during "nightlife hours" so we don't have to deal with that atmosphere when we're trying to relax. Overall I think King Kong Sushi has really matured and is doing a great job of segregating its mutually exclusive customer bases while serving both very well.

Excellent sushi! There atmosphere was nice as well. When we asked for extra wasabi they provided 2 types - the standard sushi bar type and a different 'more natural' kind that was awesome. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for some good sushi in Myrtle Beach. I also recommend getting the hurricane roll. It was fantastic!

This place did nothing for me. They couldn't give me what I wanted and offered me something they claimed was the same but it def was not. I don't understand if a sushi chef is making you a roll from scratch how can he not be able to leave off one ingredient ? Waitress seemed annoyed. The restaurant is nice but if this is the best sushi at the beach I guess I won't be eating sushi again.
