My boyfriend took me here for my birthday. We didn't make reservations but found great seats at the bar. Love the exposed brick and woodwork in the bar area. Be careful how much your order -- portions are generous. Gnocchi was fabulous! Veal scallopini melted in my mouth. My boyfriend had Mediterranean Sea bass and it was wonderful as well. We live in Hilton Head and tend to enjoy the restaurants where flip flops are proper attire but this will be high on our list for special occasions (not to mention the strong need to go back and make our way through the pasta menu).

By far the best meal I had while in Hilton head. While traveling here with a large group they were very accommodating and split checks for us. The salmon special topped with crab meat was amazing, as is all of the pasta dishes. The service was amazing and we could not have asked for a better experience

If someone else is paying, go for it...if you are paying, hit Michael Anthony's instead. The years of SERVICE Michael Anthony's staff have did not transfer over to Ombra. We had far less than stellar service through the entire meal. The service was so bad that it distracted from what should have been intimate conversations. The seafood was fresh and well seasoned. The Chicken cooked under a brick had good flavors to it. I was slightly putt off that in a "Rustic Italian" eatery potatoes were piped onto a plate(?), but they tasted good. Bread service at the tables. Extensive Wine List. Tables are very close together.

Omg! Simply amazing. This place is fabulous. I was with a party of 3 and all of us had nothing but the chef features. Ron was our waiter. The only concern we had was that the bus boys kept wanting to pic up our plates when we were not finished with our food, but after correcting them a few times, they got the picture. This place is the former Antonio's, which was also good. The restaurant was very full and the food and service were fabulous (minus the busboys), My only grip is the wines and prices need amended. The prices are way out of line,so we just had a lower price bottle w lots of table water.

Excellent service, and the food was unbelievably delicious! Great wine selection as well. A definite must if you are in the area.

Amazing service and food! We messed up our reservations but they still got us in AND I messed up my order but the kitchen and waitstaff still got the food out in time. Oh and the food was top notch. So great to have a place like this on Hilton Head.

Very comfortable. Very accommodating, no problem at all finding an alternative sauce for my gnocchi. Broad menu. Super service. We shall return.

After reading all the reviews of this place, I expected so much more. We came in late September assuming the holiday crowds would be dying down, and were surprised to see how busy the place still was for dinner. The restaurant has a very nice, charming ambiance with a nice bar. The menu has an incredibly extensive wine selection which was really impressive - the bottle of red we ordered was also perfectly chilled. One really strange thing our server did right off the bat, right after we tasted the wine, before she poured both glasses, she put the cork back in the bottle and shook the bottle up, and then proceeded to pour our glasses. Me and my dinner partner must have looked at each other funny because she immediately said that she was instructed to do so. Kind of strange!! As for the food, it was good, had a decent taste, but we definitely felt we've had better. I enjoyed the meat sauce on my tagliatelle. My dinner partner got the penne and felt like it could have been a dish from Carrabbas. With so many other Italian restaurants on the island, I definitely feel like there are better places out there.

Ombra Restaurant in Hilton Head, SC is phenomenal, from the greeting at the front desk, awesome waiter (Ned) to the exquisitely prepared food, by the talented chef/owner. My mouth is still watering 2days later. Highly recommended! A DO NOT MISS restaurant! Thank you again, Lilo Cooper

All around quality and service was incredible. Home made pastas, the pork entree is amazing and you have to end your dinner with some of their home made lemonchelo. If your in hilton head and your looking for amazing italian food this is your place.

Came here for the boyfriend's birthday dinner. Mike and Alex were extremely attentive, the ambiance and setting are perfect! We had the grouper livornese special, along with a caprese salad & half portion of gnocchi. Everything was delicious. For dessert, there was grappa, limoncello & a berry panna cotta. Also, the wine list. Extensive, impressive list of Italian reds. We cannot wait to go back.
(5)
Tony S.
The wine list was great as was the wine. The food was excellent. The service was good and responsive. The problem was the crowded seating, and the noise level. Maybe better table placement is needed rather than squeezing more people in. Will definitely return.
(4)
Jacquelyn L.
A must! Wine, food, desserts, it's all good. Highlights, besides the wine selection, antipasto plater, homemade pasta, and of course the seafood. If for some strange reason I am ever back in HH, this place is definitely top of my list of places to eat.
(5)
Suha V.
The gnocchi with Gorgonzola was the best. We also tried the ravioli stuffed with spinach. The whipped potatoes were very fluffy and delicious. We also had the tiramisu was delicious. Would definitely come back again. Also tried barbaresco. Italian wine

Been here all week and on our last night found this gem. Great fresh pasta, fish etc.
(4)
Katie M.
The food was fantastic. We had spinach ravioli and tomato mozzarella for a apps. The ravioli is all homemade and melts in your mouth. Then we had veal and fish special (salmon)- both delicious, in amazingly rich sauces. Gloria was our waitress and she was thoughtful and helpful. Only wished we had saved room for desert.

Beautiful atmosphere. Very cozy be inviting. Nice wine selection. Wonderful Italian dinner. Tasty appetizers, fantastic prosciutto. We would definitely return to this restaurant.

I had read great reviews and was excited to try this restaurant on our first night in Hilton Head. The restaurant website said they were open until 10pm - my husband and I arrived at 8:15pm and were told that the restaurant was fully booked for the rest of the evening (despite the fact that we could see several empty tables from where we were standing and there was no one else waiting). The hostess's tone seemed falsely sweet to the point of being condescending, so on a hunch, I checked Opentable. Sure enough, there were multiples reservations available for that night for a party of 2. We are professionals and were not shabbily dressed by any means (I was wearing a knee-length dress and my husband was wearing a polo shirt and slacks). Not sure why the hostess lied to us, but I would never step foot in this place again.

I would give it 6 stars if I could! Fantastic service, fantastic food, and fantastic ambiance. The server knew his wines and the food. The food was amazing and the desert was incredible. We had a party of 14 and no one was disappointed. I want to go back!
(5)

Michael's truffled mushroom risotto is exquisite. I also love his gorgonzola gnocchi.

One of the best Italian meals I have ever had! The food was outstanding and the service was also excellent, they clearly have a passion to deliver something special and they did it for us. We will be back for sure

We cannot stop talking about how fantastic this restaurant is - the food, the service, the wine list... all amazing, thank you so much Anthony! Hahaha it was so great we're actually going back tonight... this time, I promise to post a pic or two! Grrrrr... is it dinner time YET???!!!

We went here on a recommendation from our charter fishing boat captain. He had us drop off the massive cobia we caught for the chef to cook up for us, which turned out to be an EXCELLENT choice. The chef made us a 5 course meal for 10 that was creative, beautiful, and delicious. It was an experience that we still talk about fondly to this day. I knocked off one star only because our waiter was kind of rude and seemed annoyed when we asked questions about the drink selection and dishes. The hostess, however, was extremely friendly and helpful. Food was a 12 out of 10, and we will most definitely be back!
(4)
Mark C.
Quite simply the best fish I've ever had. Have the halibut with the 600 year old recipe. You won't regret it. Great service. Mary who answered the phone worked us in on a busy Saturday night (make reservations in advance) and could not have been nicer. Ned, one of our waiters (we had three), was helpfuland hilarious. We will be back EVERY TIME we come to Hilton Head.
(5)

We dined at OMBRA on Easter Sunday. From the moment we arrived the entire experience was truly exceptional. Chef/Owner Michael and Mary have assembled a wonderful team of staff professionals who take great pride and care in delivering a culinary experience each time we visit.

The greatest dinner experience ever, sat at the bar or bartender Nicole was great!! The halibut special is amazing!!

Fantastic dinner; 10 diners were all very pleased with our service (Ned was very helpful) all our courses, wines and deserts were top of the mark! Best restaurant in HiltonHead!
(5)

Simply the Best! We visit Ombra every chance we get for a special occasion or a quick bite to eat and to sit at the bar. They staff is always knowledgeable about their wine selections and specials. It is difficult to choose from the menu because everything sounds delicious.

Outstanding service. Fancy without being pretentious. Best dining experience I've had on the island so far. Even though we had a large party of 6, the food (which is cooked fresh to order) came out almost all at the same time. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. This place is great!
(5)

We went to Ombra last night for the first time. Since we are gluten free we usually avoid Italian restaurants. When I made the reservation the hostess suggested we bring some with us in case the kitchen ran out of the pasta. We had a wonderful meal . Our server Anthony was great . The food which included a seafood pasta and a veal with lemon and capers was terrific. ( they did have gluten free pasta). We liked it so much we made a reservation for next week. Great experience! We usually come to Hilton Head several times a year. We will definitely add Ombra to our favorite restaurant list.
(4)
Sasha O.
Ordered take out here. Got something off the menu, chicken Alfredo with broccoli rabe. It was very tasty. They did give bread with take out, but no olive oil & Parmesan/butter. Only complaint is price, $25 for chicken Alfredo
(3)
Scott M.
Outstanding service and wonderful appetizers and entrees! Had the special tonight - essentially a soft shell crab piccata. Wifey had the gnocchi - tasted great! Service was attentive but not overly so. Second time here - great value for what you get.

My husband and I TRIED to eat there last night, just a party of 2. From the minute we walked thru the door, I knew it was a mistake. The woman working the hostess desk, an older woman was extremely rude. We were told they had no tables available, and it took her a good 10 minutes of us standing there to tell us she could possibly fit us in around 30 minutes. I asked if we could sit at 2 of the 4 unoccupied seats at the bar, and was told they were reserved!! I am a local bartender, who, in there right mind reserves seats at the bar??? Guess this will be the one place I leave off my suggestions when I get tourists or even locals that ask my opinion of other places to eat at while on Island.

Liz M.
This is always a staple restaurant when were in HHI. The nicest staff & always welcoming. I know other reviewers mention the server Ned but we had Alex and he was excellent & great w/our children too. Definitely recommend!!
(5)
Tina S.
Came for nye and they were able to fit us at the bar at the last minute. The bar was beautiful and now I'm so glad we ate there. Light created a very nice ambiance and service was excellent. I had the spaghetti alla vongole and it was perfect! My husband got the seafood marinara and although the flavor and seafood was abundant, the linguini was over cooked. Will definitely come back!
(4)
Len L.
Our first impressions were very positive. The appearance, decor, overall look and feel was great. From the moment our server greeted us , all went downhill. She seemed rude and obnoxious . We were discussing the type of wine we were comptemplating , and she seemed completely dissinterested, and rudely asked " So what do you mean, and do you want wine or not" I was shocked and wanted to get up and leave at that moment. The food was great to mediorce depending on which dish we ate.. So in summary, my "return for another " rating is " no way" .. I am rating at 2 stars only because, I'm thinking we probably had a really bad server..

One of our highlights on our trip this year. Fabulous meal great atmosphere and the staff is top-notch. Ask for Ned or Anthony you won't be disappointed.
(5)
Jonathan F.
It was a toss up on a Sunday night and we pretty much nailed it. Our meal was fantastic from start to finish, and our waiter, Ned was absolutely tremendous in recommending wine and each of our three courses. Try the scallops for an appetizer and the ravioli second course. I don't normally eat dessert but the La Brombata chocolate dessert was out of this world. Come and visit. Bon apetit!
(5)
Hannah B.
Absolutely love this place! We have gone there twice and the food and service were impeccable. If possible request a seat in Anthony's section, he is a very entertaining server and stand up gentleman. The food instilled the true authenticity of Italy yet incorporates the local essence of Hilton Head.
(5)
Myra H.
The old saying, "your only as good as your last meal" unfortunately applies. The chicken piccata I ordered was the worse I have ever been served. The actual breast was thin, heavily breaded & dry. I had to ask for extra sauce to try and eat it. I Gave up and left it on the table. My husband had the special ravioli of the evening, his was good but not memorable. Too pricey of a place not to be consistent with quality. Not sure if we will try again since the area has so many other dining choices.

Michael S.
Just had an excellent meal here with a party of six on a busy Friday night. Genuine Italian cuisine, with aromas and taste to match, all beautifully presented in a hospitable ambience. Service was excellent, but I cant agree with the previous reviewer that Ned was the greatest server on the island, as Anthony our waiter was attentive, knowledgeable, entertaining and accommodating and definitely a contender. For starters the Ribollita (bean and veg soup on Rustic Tuscan bread) was memorable. Veal tenderloin was also really wonderful as was the homemade peach sorbet, but all the items brought to our table were great including the cobia in lemon butter with capers. Limoncello made a wonderful digestif. Definitely recommended.
(4)
Lillie P.
Two visits. Excellent food and service. Ned is the best waiter on the island.
(5)
David J.
excellent food, excellent service, the owner was present in the restaurant and involved in the service, there was a clear concern for good quality, ambiance good, a nice table and a nice atmosphere, they did not charge an automatic service charge whereas many lesser restaurants on HHI are levying the charge for poor service.....I look forward to eating here again

Group of 9 went their for dinner on Sunday, December 29th for my wife's birthday. Food and service was unbelievable. Some of the best pasta of my life. I had to try the desserts....delicious! Would go back in a heart beat!

Had dinner there New Year's Eve. Food was really good - enjoyed chicken and veal. Loved the sorbet - great presentation. Place was little cramped - could have been New Year's Eve seating.

I have eaten here twice, both meals were excellent, ambiance is good. Wait staff was excellent, wine menu is very good. I used to go to Michael's old restaurant Michael Anthony's which has been good in the past but I was disappointed with my last meal. This is my new favorite Italian restaurant on Hilton Head.
We are from Michigan and have been coming to Hilton Head for over 15 years but never stumbled upon this gem before. Our server, Mike (from Queens) was wonderfully informative, professional and friendly at the same time. His recommendations were spot on and every course was better than the last! If you are in the mood for a special dining experience with wonderful ambiance, great food and magnificent service, you won't go wrong with Ombra!

Came here during restaurant week for my birthday. Delicious! Very generous portions. I had lobster bisque which was silky and flavorful, hubby had carpaccio again generous portion and very good. We both had osso bucco with risotto, very rich flavor and tender veal and risotto was light and creamy-loved it! Panna cotta with fresh berries for dessert - I thought had a little too much gelatin which made it too firm for me but it tasted very good. A little homemade limoncello and espresso finished a wonderful meal; we will definitely go back! Service was exemplary too.

For context, a 5 star restaurant doesn't exist in SC outside of Charleston so 4 is very strong. The antipasti were outstanding. Order the Panzanella salad and the beat salad. Are on part with some if the best that can be had. the pasta course stars were the gorgon zola gnocchi. The gnocchi was perfect lyrics prepared, excellent texture and melted in your mouth. The gorgonzola cream sauce was truly indulgent and the crumbled bacon was a nice touch and the smokiness was a nice contrast. The ravioli was very well done also. The star of the second round was the Scottish salmon with blood orange beurre blanc sauce. One if the most luxurious entrees I've had. The veal chop is the I signature and very good but nowhere near stellar. Wine selection was adequate. Chose a nice Babaresco. Bottom line- best Italian on the island but if you're coming from NYC, Philly, Cjicago, etc... you should save the coin and go local seafood ..

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

This is always a staple restaurant when were in HHI. The nicest staff & always welcoming. I know other reviewers mention the server Ned but we had Alex and he was excellent & great w/our children too. Definitely recommend!!

Bon apetit!

Absolutely love this place! We have gone there twice and the food and service were impeccable. If possible request a seat in Anthony's section, he is a very entertaining server and stand up gentleman. The food instilled the true authenticity of Italy yet incorporates the local essence of Hilton Head.

Two visits. Excellent food and service. Ned is the best waiter on the island.

excellent food, excellent service, the owner was present in the restaurant and involved in the service, there was a clear concern for good quality, ambiance good, a nice table and a nice atmosphere, they did not charge an automatic service charge whereas many lesser restaurants on HHI are levying the charge for poor service.....I look forward to eating here again

We live in DC, where there are quite a few delicious Italian restaurants. I didn't expect a restaurant in Hilton Head to compete with them, but it did. Our server, Mitch, recommended we start with the prosciutto appetizer. It was delicious. He also made excellent wine and entree recommendations. I had the gnocchi and my fiancé had the veal tenderloin. For dessert, we ordered limoncello and profiteroles. Mitch had at least 4 or 5 other tables, but he made us feel like we were his only customers all night. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for great Italian food and fantastic service.
