Last Monday night, August 31st, I pulled out of Smiley's Acoustic Cafe parking lot and ran over a sharp metal object sticking up several inches out of the asphalt. It punctured my tire. A very nice young couple began to help me change the tire. I went inside the business to alert the owner to the fact that he had a dangerous hazard in his parking lot. He immediately because rude and condescending. By his words and actions, I can only surmise that he doesn't give a rip about my tire and worse yet, doesn't care if anyone is hurt on that piece of metal! He simply PATTED MY ARM and said SUE ME and walked back inside. If that piece of metal sticking up out of asphalt can puncture my tire, it can puncture a person, too! As a community we should demand he take care of it! p.s. the food ain't so great either.

Smiley's has a decent beer list and usually the live music is very enjoyable. I've also eaten lunch here and the food is good - not amazing by downtown Greenville standards, but worth a try for sure. I had the Pesto Pizza Points, but I'm definitely hoping to get back and try the Cafe Curry with chicken! The reason Smiley's gets just three stars from me is that the restaurant/bar area itself is small and horribly designed. There's a half-wall that splits the restaurant seating area from the bar, and the bar itself extends into a sort of hallway/narrow area in the back. It's no big deal when there's no one in the restaurant (like the day I went there for lunch), but at night - both weekends and some weekdays, depending on the band and whatnot - it's insanely crowded, next to impossible to get to the bar to order drinks, and there are never seats available (and often any empty tables are marked "reserved").

Our favorite place downtown for a cold beer, excellent burger and great music! Don't forget to try the pimento cheese. Don't waste your time looking for a parking spot on the street, park in the lot next door.

Smiley's is a great laid, back hangout that typically has an older crowd. Good place to go if you want to hear some good music and have some good food. I've only eaten here once and it was pretty good but 'nothing to write home about'. Service can be very slow at times due to only having 2 bartenders where 3 are really needed. People tend to camp out at the bar stools on busy nights making it difficult to get a drink. Overall, I always have a good time here and it's a shame that Greenville doesn't have more venues that have live music the way smiley's does.

you can always count on some kind of good jam band playing here. good selection of wine and beer. my only complaint is that its by far the slowest bar service I've ever had in my life.

Where you will find me on a free Friday or Saturday night after 10pm - almost always. If you are a live music fan - this is the place to be. The name of the place is miss-leading. Maybe the early show or during the week is acoustic, but the late shows on Friday and Saturday are full on plugged in Southern / blues rock - think Drivin n Cryin meets Hendrix with the owners savant cousin from the mountains of NC. Service is very good....especially considering the tight quarters, loud music and dealing with people that late at night. The bartenders and servers really keep their cool. I hear the food is excellent but have not tried. Couple drawbacks.....one for the patrons - the space is choppy - you either get a spot at the bar, a table or you will be standing in a awkward position. If I owned the place, I'd consider a re-fit of the room. I know not cheap, but I think it could be done much better. second - for the owners. I saw this in nashville as well. I call it the public library effect. I notice a lot of couples (That you would not typically see out on a friday or sat night), taking up table space and watching the free music. They may have ordered one round of drinks, but those are long gone. I almost want to say something myself - 'Hey people, they are running a business and trying to make money. This is not thursday night at NOMA square. No corporate sponsor here." lastly - for the girls - there seems to be a consistent creepy group of guys that kinda hang around and jump on the dance floor any time a group of girls start to dance. Thats fine, but you know the type - dancing a little to close with a little too much touching. I've seen a number of girls leave and it is clear they were annoyed. Smiley's - you know who these guys are. I think it keeps some women away - Deal with them. all in all my favorite place in greenville. but thats just me

Non smoking venue and non hassle environment leads to a return visit to listen to live music and inexpensive brews. Very comfortable space. Small stage provides intimate setting.

Great bar. I'm a big fan of live music in my bar of choice. This is the place! Great music, good drinks. I have never eaten there, but from what I've seen the food looks pretty good. Great place to just chill out with good tunes and a great drink.

Great place and long time customer....however, recently left credit card there and someone on staff took my card and charged over $800.00 worth of various merchandise and getting nails done. BEWARE !!!!!!

BEST Bacon Cheddar fries on the PLANET! This place has a very fun atmosphere and the food and music is great. The beer selection isn't bad either. If your looking for a really fun local hang out this is one of the best places in Greenville!

Eclectic cozy spot in the West End with decent food. Cost to worth it ratio: 3.5 Highlights: - Personality: made me feel more like Asheville or Berkeley than becoming trendified Greenville. It's hippie-ish: even the sign in the back of the place notes that. Guitar theme surrounds: hung from the ceiling and the shape of the bar. On the wall opposite the bar there are warhol-like bright colored paintings of people's faces. - Live music: a duo of guitarists playing country-esque classics (think Johnny Cash). Pleasant entertainment with a friend's living room/campfire community feel. - Staff: we called a few hours earlier for a dinner for a party of 10 and they went out of their way to accomodate us, saying they have another sizeable party at that time but they could bring some furniture up from the basement. - Black bean dip: pureed version mixed with hummus and spices and served with blue tortilla chips. Midlights: - Limited menu: mostly chicken and steak prepared in a salad, sandwich, or entrée with a few other items - Grilled jerk chicken salad: good flavor, but not really spicy jerk that I was expecting. Also salad is a loose term here--it's more of a bed of black beans with a few pieces of lettuce. Lowlights: - Lighting: very low so a bit inconvenient for dinner - Service: hard to flag down a waitress It's a cute place, but not sure I'll be rushing back. Maybe it'd be better for a mellow place to hang out and stop in for a few drinks.

One bar that my girls and I've been able to go and feel welcome EVERYTIME :) Their fries are to die for... they recommend the smiley's sauce, but i just prefer the piping hot fries as is. When they do have shows, live acoustic music, it gets sooo crowded that it's hard to enter, find the bar, find a seat, use the bathroom... but it's all worth it. Like the reviewer below, and being raised in san francisco, it does feel like berkeley'esque joint. Wide range of age group, some are on dates, some come for the music, some are there for the IPA beer... The only reason why I put the moderage range for the price is calculating the cost of alcohol into the factor.

Great Music & Food last night! After touring the fashion stores of downtown on the Passport Tour, we landed at Smiley's for a drink and food. I had the Asian Stir Fry Vegtables with Chicken and Crispy Wontons. It was excellent! The sweet tea was very good and refreshing, the music started before we finished the food and we could still talk. Small and intimate place with good food and music, great end to a great day!!
