Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Still on a quest to find decent Mexican faire in our new town, we tried Puerto Vallarta on the recommendation of a Mexican national patient of mine and it didn't disappoint. I ordered the steak Tacos Al Carbon and it was very tasty, the corn tortillas seemed fresh, and the meat was done but tender. The rice was light and flavorful. There are two kinds of salsa offered, a mild and hotter one. I thought the hotter of the two had more flavor and I liked the consistency better but pretty soon my mouth was en fuego. If you're like me, you'll need to keep the water coming...which they did because the service was great. The chips were thin and not too salty, either. Well done. Prices were reasonable, too. Nice job, PV. We'll be back!

Salsa was just ok, nothing to write home about. Same for the taco salad that I ordered. Just didn't care for the taste or the beans they use in their food. Just all around "ok", somewhat below average. Probably won't be back when there are far better Mexican restaurants in town.

I judge Mexican restaurants by their salsa...theirs is very good. Plus $7.99 for a large pitcher of Dos Equis...staff is very friendly, service quick. I'll be back here for sure!

good for a order by the number tex-mex restaurant. One of the best in town of that type. Really large selection and friendly service. Not much more I can say. I have never been to Monterrey's so can't comment on the big chain here in Greenville.

The other reviewers got it right here on this one. It's not the best Mexican I've ever had, but it's way far from the worst.

Well, the line was wrapped around Chick Fil A a couple of times so we drove around the corner to try Puerto Vallarta instead. The wait staff was very nice and their menu is quite extensive, but we didn't get exactly what we ordered. Maybe there's too much on there for them to keep up? My Pollo Loco was supposed to be a chicken breast with sauteed onions on a bed of lettuce with sliced avacado, tomato and a pickled jalapeno, with beans and tortillas on the side. I did receive a nice sized chicken breast, well seasoned with onions on a bed of rice (huh?), with a side of lettuce, guacamole instead of avacado, a tomato slice, and pickled jalapeno. Again, it wasn't bad but just not what I expected. And my husband ordered a supreme chicken burrito and the waitress said chicken burrito when she sat the plate down but when he cut into it, it was beef. Oh well. With so many other places from which to choose, we'll just keep going on down the road next time. Darn, and I really wanted a peach milkshake too.

Serviceable Mexican place - probably a better choice to go to Monterrey's up the highway towards Furman. The food is a little below what you expect from your typical cheap Mexican place: A little blander, servings a little too big. I've never been impressed by the service, and the interior doesn't have the intimate, lived-in feel that Monterrey's has.

Iama Critic Rating - Puerto Vallarta Mexican Restaurant - 3 Stars 3207-E5 North Pleasantburg Drive, Greenville, SC Overall: Slightly above average overall but they serve an entree or two that might be worthy of four stars. Table Chips and Salsa - 3 Stars They serve mild and hot salsas right off the bat. The chips are very light and crispy. My guests like thin chips, I find them aggravating, especially if you are going to eat your beans or rice with them. Personal preferences aside, Puerto Vallarta's chips and mild salsa are just a slight step above normal. However their hot salsa is excellent. Hot Salsa - 4 Stars Puerto Vallarta's hot salsa is great! Some of the best hot salsa we have ever had. It is chunky, it is hot, it is delightful! This stuff is so good I would like eat a bowl for breakfast! Super Hot Salsa - 4 Stars Puerto Vallarta's hottest salsa, and baby this stuff is HOT!!! Serious folks, we love hot salsa and Kudos to Puerto Vallarta for offering it. Just be real careful with this stuff. It don't exactly taste great either, but it does what it is supposed to do. Bring The Pain Baby! Bring The Pain! $12.99 - Super Fajitas - 3 Stars These SUPER Fajitas and not so super. They are served with beans, rice and your typical lettuce, guacamole, tomato and sour cream condiments. My guest who ordered these fajitas is a fajitas connoisseur. The man has eaten more fajitas than most people on the entire planet. He said this fajita mix had all the right meats but it was missing the typical onions and red peppers. In fact there really wasn't much spices at all to remind him that this dish is supposed to be Mexican! I don't know why so many Mexican restaurants refuse to cook with Mexican spices and Mexican peppers. When you have Poblano peppers why would you ever serve green bell peppers. Very Sad. $7.50 - Entree #16 - 3 Stars It comes with a chalupa, a chile relleno and an enchilada. It does not come with boring beans and rice. However this is the same Mexican fare you have tasted a hundred times. And doesn't a chile relleno come stuffed in a Mexican pepper? Because I didn't find any pepper of any kind, just the stuffing. $8.50 - Mixtecas - 2 Stars This entree comes with tree enchiladas with cheese (Really? Where?), pico de gallo, chorizo, and salsa, and is served with rice and guacamole salad. Wow, I was really excited when I saw this entree on menu because it looked so different. But it turned out to be the biggest "Fail" of the night. The menu said this entree came "Smothered in Chorizo". I dream of being smothered in Chorizo! Did I just say that? And my friends, this is not what any of us would call "Smothered". At best you get a slight smattering of tasteless meat. How can you even make Chorizo tasteless? And to make maters worse it came with utterly terrible, RAW corn tortillas. Disgusting. If you saw the pictures we took you would wonder how any entree that looks so pretty (although very meager) could taste so bad? Gratis Desert - 4 Stars Puerto Vallarta's gave us a freebie desert. I am not sure if they give all their customers a free desert or not. Restaurants sometimes give us free stuff without telling us. However this little desert was really nice, a tiny dip of ice cream, a little whipped cream and two puffy tortilla looking things and a drizzle of chocolate. Just one thing missing, a pinch of cinnamon. Final Thoughts: (The Bill) Forget getting an itemized bill at Puerto Vallarta. They gave us a hand written, unreadable bill and a credit card receipt. This really adds to the time it takes to write a review but that is irrelevant to my readers and regular customers. Puerto Vallarta's prices were exactly the same as every other, run of the mill, Mexican restaurant. And Puerto Vallarta is just a slight step above average.
