Many may think that writing about an experience at your standard Mexican restaurant is not worth the effort put into it. Without being too sentimental, this restaurant brings me back to my childhood. For as long as I can remember it has been in this location and the source of one of my favorite nacho dishes. To put it lightly, I am a nacho fiend. Making it at home many nights of the month, my eyes get diverted to a nacho dish on almost any menu. Most of it can possibly be attributed to the post-church Sunday lunches that I remember but after my visit today I clearly see nothing has changed. There's not much to say about the decor, service, and location. There are several things to say about the food. The salsa is not a bland, tasteless jar of blended tomatoes. It is slightly spicy with good hints of cilantro. The menu is large but very well put together and in a good format. Similar to Corona's (also in Greenville), taking the effort to get a dish that does not have a number next to it is worth it. On to the food. I ordered (obviously) the nachos supreme with beef instead of chicken. The cheese is very well made and has a hint of spice on it. It is one of those stomach-filling dishes that is just simply good. Nothing spectacular as far as toppings or the chips, just good. Friends ordered many other dishes and one particular friend said from now on "the burrito is what I'm ordering." So for your quick, easy, tasty Mexican on any day of the week it is my go-to place. 3.5/5.

Good Mexican food, cheap prices...been eating here for 20 years. Best Monterrey in town. Nothing fancy about this place. Chips and salsa brought to your table when you arrive.

You know how there's a certain type of cheap Mexican restaurant that, no matter what its name is or where it is, it has food that's exactly identical to every other cheap Mexican restaurant in the world? If you've ever eaten at Monterrey's and then eaten at nearby Corona's (or if you ever had the pleasure of eating at the El Cactus down the street near Greenville Tech before it closed) then you know exactly what I'm talking about. If that's what you're after, you can't do much better than Monterrey's. Eating lunch here on a hot day is always a pleasure, as you get to hunker down in the cool shadows of the brick enclosed booths and drink your glass of Pepsi and eat the familiar cheap Mexican food you're expecting.

Reasonable prices, friendly service, surprisingly and pleasantly hot salsa - I recommend for causal Mexican lunch.

Typical Mexican restaurant with the same menu fare as all the others. Service was okay. But, I won't return... I watched a server drop chips on the floor and pick them back up put them in the basket and proceeded to take them to the table he was serving. He saw me see him and just shrugged his shoulders and smiled. Nasty!!

I have been eating at this restaurant for years and LOVE IT. ALWAYS great service and food! I had the taco salad last night and a Frozen Strawberry Margarita, ordered cheese dip for an appetizer. The cheese dip came moments before the food and of course I ate my food first - I was stuffed. Other places I get a taco salad it barely fills me but this one was packed with steak, cheese, guacamole, beans, etc. Great place, comfortable and pleasing! And it only took one try to get a perfect margarita ;)

Iama Critic Rating - Monterrey Mexican Restaurant - 2 Stars 1813 Laurens Road, Greenville, SC Our Experience: If you close your eyes while eating at Monterrey you could not discern the difference between their food and the vast majority of Greenville Mexican restaurants. I am starting to wonder if they are all owned by the same guy! And that guy is obviously not Mexican because he seems to be adamantly opposed to using Mexican peppers or spices in any of his dishes! I have been to Mexico, this isn't Mexican. But should it not be at least a facsimile? The Service - 5 Stars (22% tip) Some other reviews have mentioned poor service, however that was not our experience. Luisa was one of the best waitresses we have had in quite some time. She was attentive, social, helpful and diligent. The very epitome of what we all deserve in a waitress. For her phenomenal effort we provided a 22% $7.00 tip. We typically provide 20% or more for 5 star service on the pre-tax portion of the bill, 18% for 4, 15% for 3, 12% for 2 and 0% for 1 star service. The Food: $0.95 Extra Salsa - 0 Stars Out of the hundreds of Mexican restaurants I have dined at, a few do not offer "free" table chips and salsa, and I avoid those restaurants. And a few charge for their chips and salsa, and I avoid those restaurants like the plague. But never have I seen a Mexican restaurant charge for extra salsa. Seriously? A Mexican restaurant's calling card is their salsa, and you are going to charge for the one thing you actually put spices in? Table Chips and Salsa - 3 Stars Monterrey's table chips and salsa are average at best. There is nothing special about either. The salsa is nice, with a decent flavor, just like most. We did not order any hot salsa after we were told additional salsa was a buck for every tiny cup! $7.75 Combo #26 - 2 Stars This entree includes one burrito, one enchilada rice and beans. It is all so boring and lifeless that the entree screams for spice. For the price of this single entree I could have eaten at La Fiesta's fabulous buffet. My guest critic was amazed that a Mexican could create such a bland dish. $9.00 Chiles Poblanos - 2 Stars The menu says "stuffed" pablonos. They were not stuffed. The pablonos where slit, splayed open and laid on top of the "stuffing". And the menu didn't mention burnt. $10.50 El Combo Special - 2 Stars According to their online menu this combo used to be $8.75. And it should have stayed $8.75. This combo comes with one chalupa, one taco, one chile relleno, one burrito, one enchilada and more boring beans rice and beans. This combo is three plates of food and if it tasted great it would four or five stars, but it is painfully bland and boring. Why do so many Mexican restaurants make the same, identical, boring, lifeless stuff when it would be so easy to add just a little spice or a few ingredients and you could set your restaurant entirely apart? Throw some corn and onions into that rice. Add some spice into those beans. Anything but make the same stuff as one hundred other Mexican restaurants. For goodness sake the Mexican rice at Golden Corral is better than 90% of the Mexican restaurants we go to! Total Bill: $41.67 for two adults including tax, a generous tip, and two $1.95 soda fountain drinks. Final Thoughts: Fear not dear readers because Chef Iama Critic has already found and reviewed several great Mexican restaurants in Greenville. Just search his reviews or drop him a Yelp message. They range from high end restaurants to value buffets.

After helping my friend move, Mexican food sure sounded good. She recommended this place, saying that it's her favorite Mexican spot in Greenville. I don't think I can say it's my favorite, but they do have some decent, authentic Mexican food. My fellow movers and I came for a weekend lunch time. I ordered the Pollo Fundido, which was basically a fried enchilada stuffed with chicken and covered with queso. I was surprised that it had no vegetables inside - just meat (which seemed a little odd to me) - but the chicken was moist and well-seasoned. My partner got a combination with a tamal and an enchilada. The beef in the enchilada was good but the tamal was rather unmemorable. One of the best things about this place is that they have thick chips and decently chunky (and slightly spicy) salsa. Both tasted pretty fresh. I did not try them that day, but my friend swears by their margaritas. I noticed that they serve a 44 oz margarita, and I think I would swear by that too. :-) Service was great and friendly. This location is a little run down, as the bathroom reflected that, but at least it was reasonably clean. I would definitely come back and try this place again. Next time I'm getting the fajitas, though!

The rice was greasy my tacos or not very flavorful the cheese dip I ordered never came the hot salsa tasted sour and the regular salsa bowl was empty hey majority of the time. The server did a horrible job and I will not go back to this place.

There's a Monterrey in my hometown that is just about the best Mexican food ever. So, I wanted to give this place a try in the hopes that it would be just as awesome. It's a old Western Steer or Denny's or something similar and the carpet doesn't appear to have been part of the renovation. The inside is dated and dark. The outside is similarly in need of a facelift. The food is on the lower end of your typical strip mall or food court Mexican joint. Nothing inedible, but nothing to rave about either. The chips were warm and plentiful. The fajitas just okay. The service was good. When the thing that stands out most about a restaurant visit is the dirty carpet, well... that says it all.

Look, I get it. This is a divy little neighborhood Mexican place where you order one of the 83 combination plates smothered in queso with beans and rice and pay $6.50 for the privilege. That's totally cool, and it's exactly what we were looking for when we pulled off I-85 for a dinnertime pit-stop. I don't expect service to be stellar in a place like this. But I do expect for both my water glass and my chips n' salsa to be refilled. At least... once? Is that too much to ask? Apparently so. The entree combo plates were old and reheated. The rice was chewy and the taco shells were ridiculously stale. The complimentary chips n' salsa were the highlights of the meal, but as previously indicated, we couldn't even track someone down to refill the basket. I didn't visit the ladies' restroom for reasons that should be apparent, but my wife tells me it was flooded and disgusting. Don't make the same mistake we did. If you're driving through SC and you get the urge to eat around Greenville, there are other Mexican places near I-85. I can't vouch for them, but I can almost guarantee they'd be better than this dank pit.

I visited just before closing time and service was still great. I ordered the Nachos with beef and thought they were great. The tomato slice on top was something new I've never seen before on Nachos - cool! Food 4/5 - Yay, I'm a fan Atmosphere 3/5 - A-OK Menu Pricing - 4/5

don't go there if you want good service! The staff was so rude. It was 5mins late before they opened the restaurant and he chose to open the other side of the door and asked us to walk around with young children. Absolutely not acceptable. After this "F U" treatment, we will never come back here again!!!

Had my first experience here tonight. We got in just in time since they close at 10:00 and we rolled up at 9:30... we were seated promptly and my first impression was that I was taken back to the 70's and where was the disco music....however, the food was very good! I had Arroz con Camarones (thats rice with shrimp for those who dont know) it was cooked perfectly and generous with the shrimp! Hubby got the #30 combo platter, i think it was enchiladas..he ate it so fast that I didnt get a chance to check it out. He said that he was pleased and that it was as good as he remembered it a decade ago. Two other observations I made were that they serve Mexican Coke as well as Fanta...the difference is that it is made with cane sugar not synthetic, you must try it!!!! The other thing i noticed is that our server actually pulled the tables out from the walls to clean under them. I have never seen that done at a restaurant in a long time! Oh yeah, you can see directly into the kitchen at any time, it was spotless! Before I forget....there is no alcohol served on sundays here. Not a problem for me :0) Overall I was very pleased with my dining experience there and will return soon for lunch. Our bill was 26.00 and that included 3 drinks, 2 entrees and chips, excellent value. Thank You Monterrey!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
