Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

I went here last week for lunch and really enjoyed it. It doesn't look like much from the outside and the inside looks like a throwback to the 70s or something, but don't let it detour you. I got the Baja fish tacos and they were delicious and inexpensive considering the large portion. Good sauce, as well. Our server was very friendly and outgoing. The only reason I'm giving it four stars instead of five is because my drink was left empty for a little too long and it would've been nice to have been offered dessert. Overall, I will go back and I definitely recommend it.

Three stars at best. Late lunch matched the service. Beef taco cold chicken taco too juicy...water & Oil ran out as eating. Smoke smell filled the restaurant & my clothes. Yea wasn't refilled offer either. Took a salsa and chips home and the salsa opened and spilled everywhere.

Great Mexican food. Friendly service. Get the Carne Asada it is fantastic. Not the cleanest restaurant but still very good.

Service was great, food was good, the only complaint, and its a major one, is the place smells like stale smoke. I really dont know why any restaurant allows smoking anymore. I can understand a bar but not s restaurant. If it were for that I would have given it a higher rating.

Look, you know what you're getting into before you walk in food-wise. However, the staff at this location will do everything they can to make your experience enjoyable. The manager, Eric does an excellent job at keeping the place running efficiently so that your enchiladas come out fast and hot. What really sets this place apart for me is the cocktails. Eric (same guy from above) is an awesome bartender. I double-dare you to have him make you a surprise cocktail. They usually contain tequila of course, but they never disappoint. A solid choice for when you can't be coerced into cooking anything for yourself.

Many a meal and a margarita have I consumed at Monterrey's on Poinsett. They are always accommodating of larger groups as well as couples and families that dine there, and there's never a wait to be seated. The staff is friendly and considerate. The menu selections at Monterrey's are simply your average numbered-combo Mexican fare, but taken at face value, everything is palatable. The chips and salsa are always a highlight, and the rice is particularly well-prepared and delicious. My friends and I always jump at the opportunity to order $5 "big beers" (32 oz.) and margaritas during dinnertime. And for special occasions, a fishbowl margarita with the girls gets the job done right. The only time Monterrey's booze ever failed us? Once, the Dos Equis was just too dang cold and the pipe froze, so they couldn't pour us any. We forgave them. Eventually. I wish that Monterrey's were a bit cheaper, since the food isn't notably special or different from any other Mexican chowhouse. But as long as the plates are big, the chips are never-ending and the drinks are cold, I'll continue to stop in every once in a while.

Great place - cheap food, good atmosphere, and a Furman hangout. Delicious food of the typical cheap Mexican variety: great enchiladas and plenty of chips and salsa before the meal. Probably a little out of the way unless you're in the area already for some other reason, or are a Furman student.
