India is the birth place of Chicken Tikka Masala and Curries. Indian foods are prepared with a blend of finely mixed spices quite popular across the region. The spices develop the rich taste in Indian food enough to boggle your mind. The ever-increasing fan base of Indian food around the New York city is steadily increasing because of the large number of Indians who traveled to the land of dreams. The Indians also brought their very own vibrant, colorful, and aromatic authentic dishes for the people in the West. While most of the Indian population is Vegetarian, Indian food is great for people who are looking for vegan or vegetarian food option. If you are a Meat lover, don't get disappointed yet. Indian food also boasts of some popular non-vegetarian dishes too. Few examples are the famous Butter Chicken, Mutton Biryani and Tandoori Chicken are enough to satisfy your taste buds.
Indian food has gained reputation all over the world especially in the United States. You can find many places serving the appetizing Indian food across all major cities in the US. India is a diverse country with different food culture originated from different parts of the country. While the Northern region boasts tandoori dishes and korma offering royal taste, the Western Ghats offers sea foods that is made in naturally sweet tender coconut milk. The South Indian food servers a quality of different dishes made from rice accompanied with spicy chutneys, curries and famous sambhar. Also, the Indian sweets are a delight to relish. If you ever want to have a burst of sugar syrup in mouth, don't forget to try few Bengali Sweets. Be it spicy, tangy, or sweet flavor, you can find everything in the Indian cuisine. Be assured that the melody of spices will surely bring delight to you.

Handi Indian Cuisine is conveniently located on Main Street in downtown Greenville. When my friend and I arrived for an early dinner, we weren't greeted quickly, but the wait wasn't too long. It's nice when there is a hostess ready and waiting as soon as you walk in. The good news here is that this was probably the main negative. The restaurant is quite spacious and we ended up sitting in the section of the restaurant near the window that faces the street (it is slightly elevated). It was quiet and provided the perfect backdrop for our conversation. I had a dish that consisted of cauliflower and potatoes and it was very good. I had the mild version and in hindsight, I think I should have upped the spiciness a bit to a moderate level (you can specify that). I also had the garlic Naan. The slightly irritating thing here was that they forgot to put the Naan order in so I had to ask for it twice. It's a little unsettling to me when waiters take your order and don't write it down. And this is why - because at some point they will forget something. Thankfully the restaurant was not crowded, so the Naan didn't take too long after I requested it again. My friend enjoyed her meal as well as the mango drink she had. Both of us had vegetarian meals - they had a lot of vegetarian options here and that is a major plus for me. Overall, if I am in Greenville again and craving Indian food, I would definitely return. Thumbs up to Handi Indian Cuisine.

Had dinner with my husband while visiting Greenville. Excellent service. Attentive and friendly. The food was delicious!!!

having spent some time in India, I'm delighted every time I go to Handi and get the smells of India as I walk through the door. food's great, though like every Indian restaurant around the south: pricy. I'm a huge fan of chicken tikka masala and there's is spot on- a wonderful butter sauce. of course it's a must to begin or end with a cup of chai. chai tea latte my butt, get that out of here!! just chai. there's (though it may seem less flavorful then an American Starbucks latte) is exACTLY like the stuff I had during my travels. so yes. have a cup!

Are you kidding me? This place is a joke. I've been there twice within the space of 6 months and it was the same experience both times. THE SERVICE IS HORRENDOUS. The servers are unprofessional and clueless. I see the owners hanging out at the bar doing nothing while diners wait for drinks and food. I complained to one of the supposed owners and they blamed their own waitress for the poor service. I don't know how they stay in business. What a disgrace to Greenville. Saffron on Woodruff Road is the better place for Indian cuisine if you're in Greenville.

Don't let the outside patio fool you. Was very hesitant about going in when walking by. But we gave it a try. Food was amazing. Sauces were perfect. They asked us our spice level based on 1-10 and we told them 7. Food was spicy but not so much it we couldn't enjoy. And we like a lot of hot spice. They have a nice selection of wine. Patio dinning is a big part of downtown, wish they would make patio more festive... But definitely going back for the food!

Mmmmm yummy Indian food buffet. The food was fresh, tasty and nicely cooked. The restaurant was very tasteful and the staff were quietly efficient and very friendly. Plus I saw an Indian family eating here too so that's got to be a good sign. They were enjoying the food and going up and down for more. I did the same till I nearly popped. The food here is delicious and not expensive. Enjoy.......

Yummy Indian food, large area for seating, would eat again. Some friends and I got a table for 7 and ordered many curries to share family style. I can't take lots of spice, so I stuck with the milder curries, but I enjoyed them a lot. I do think that each of the curries were saltier than they needed to be, but everything else was great. The mango lassi was lovely: creamy, flavorful, and refreshing. The staff was friendly enough, but there weren't many waiters there, so they were spread thing. The atmosphere isn't anything too impressive, fairly modest I'd say, but there are a lot of tables, and the restaurant was accommodating with our large party. I'll be coming back again the next time I'm in Greenville.

Love this place. $9 buffet, amazing flavored, cozy decor. The food is so flavorful and slightly more spicy than other buffetts I've tried. The staff is attentive and quick when an item needs refilling or a guest has a request. The space is cool, dark and quiet, which is a welcome break from the bright, noisy bustling Main St just outside the door. I love everything about it.
(5)Suzanna Z.
Not the fastest service but the food is great. Recommend lassi-yoghurt, lamb saag ghoht(I think that's how you spell it. Spicy level is adjusted to your desire.
(4)Chris G.
The lamb vindaloo was v excellent. Ordered "Indian Hot" & was not disappinted with the heat. Garlic Nan bread also a treat. Every time I eat here I wonder why I don't go here more. Place should be moe crowded.
(5)Jeanna B.
Me and my friend ordered the dinner for two and there was lots of food! It was all very tasty. We did order it mild but they accidentally put the order in for medium, so it was spicy when we got it. I didn't want to bother changing it, but it was no problem. We traded out the spicy curries for mild ones in no time. The waitress was very friendly and had no problem changing out the order that was messed up. They have really good spiced sweet tea also and sweet rice pudding for dessert!

Overpriced leftovers from lunch buffet. Had chicken masala, was overcooked, small portion for $14. Naan w garlic $3.50 for one piece. Won't go back.

This place was soooo good. I came here as the first date I've had in years, so most of the awkwardness was gone, and we could act like weirdos. Which we did, even though it was a semi-fancy occasion. We had reservations, but came about 20 minutes early and we were seated immediately. Surprisingly, there weren't a lot of people there. Maybe one other table when we arrived, and then two more groups of people were seated after we arrived. Despite the fact that Indian food is one of my favorite types of food, I really don't eat it as much as I eat other kinds of food. I love the rich array of spices they have. It's as much smelling the wonderful aromas as tasting the spices on your tongue. The atmosphere is cozy, intimate, and a very interesting combination between casual and fancy. Casual because it seems like there's a buffet down the hall, and fancy because you get linen napkins and a linen tablecloth, and there's soft lighting for people that choose to order off the menu and are seated in the main area. But we decided on the Dinner for 2 Options, which had a good mix of food that I was interested in trying, and didn't pigeonhole me to one particular entree. It was around $35 for that. We chose the medium spiciness, I think? Samosas - There were fantastic. Unfortunately, only two were provided. I would order these as an appetizer in a heartbeat. Chicken Tikka - Really good flavors. Tandoori Shrimp - Really bright orange, and it looked way more spicier than it tasted. The shrimp had a shrimp flavor (cue, not the freshest), but the sauce was really good. Chicken/Lamp Patia (we got chicken) Generous chunks of chicken, in a spicy sauce. Vegetable Masala - Really rich flavor, despite the lack of meat. Basmati Rice - Huge portion of rice. We were able to add rice to almost everything, and still had a large amount to take back home. Garlic Naan - I think it was two slices of this, each one cut into quarters. (My favorite was the Samosas, Chicken Tikka, and Chicken Patia.) PROS: The garlic naan is wonderfully fluffy and not burnt! The food is generously portioned. Wonderfully spiced (though I guess we could have gone up in spiciness). Large chunks of meat (there weren't any bones, which has been an issue in food I've gotten at other Indian places). Lots of flavorful spices in the sauces and meat. Large portion of rice. Quiet, intimate space. Low lighting, very nice. CONS: Water wasn't always filled. I got the sense they weren't as attentive as other restaurants out of a respect for their patrons, not out of laziness. But still, while I could have done with more spiciness, the desire for more water to accommodate that would not be near enough. THE VERDICT: Here's why I'd rate this place 5 instead of 4 stars: the portions are generous AND the food is flavorful. A lot of the time, you'll get a tradeoff or a so-so. Great taste, but small portions (the most common at good restaurants), or okay food with okay portions. This place did a surprisingly good job on all fronts. We were able to eat until we were completely full that night. Then the next day, we had additional leftovers where we were both able to eat more food. AND then the next day, there was still one more good sized portion left over. Essentially 5-6 meals, and if we're being mathematical here, that would average out to about $6 per meal. TIPS: We added the rice with what was left over, and left to marinate in the fridge 24 hours or so, the spices really kicked up a notch! Also, it would be a good idea to get an additional order of Naan for your leftovers.

Good food, friendly staff, decently priced. My wife had the salmon, and I had the lamb tandoori. Both good. The restaurant itself is a nice change from the commercial places around.

I went here while on a business trip in Greenville, SC. Our hotel was conveniently located on main street, which houses a plethora of Asian restaurants (sushi, hibachi, Indian, Malaysian, etc.). I ran into a colleague who said the Indian buffet was delicious, and that it was run by Indian people (which is always a good sign). I decided to give it a try. The atmosphere was nice - the place is huge. When my coworker and I arrived, we were the only ones in the restaurant (it was pretty early for dinner). The waitress promptly brought out some of that tortilla-ish bread with the green sauce. Then a man took over our service. I'm not a fan of lunch or dinner buffets... I prefer my Indian spicy, which they can't really do if it's in a buffet. I ordered the chicken tikka masala, my favorite dish, and some naan for dipping. I had read tons of reviews on Yelp describing the tikka masala as delicious, so I knew I would be making a good choice. Both dishes were out of this world. I ordered medium spicy level, knowing it would be spicier than most places consider medium. The spice level was perfect, and the dish had the most wonderful flavor and contained big pieces of tender chicken. The basmati rice and naan went perfectly with the sauce. Per usual, I couldn't finish my entire dish, but I came close. This Indian restaurant has awakened the beast in me and I have been craving it ever since eating there!
(5)Sam R.
Hidden treasure downtown, lunch buffet is delicious. Personally I love the Marsala and naan bread
(5)Ursula G.
$8.95 for unlimited lunch buffet. Large variety of great options, very delicious, clean & friendly workers. Would definitely come back here. It always looks empty from the outside, but most people sit in the back closest to buffet - might help if they moved buffet to middle of room so people would be more likely to sit outside & make the place look as busy as it should.
(4)Craig P.
We work near here and go a lot. It us never crowded which is surprising because it is quite good. Handi and Saffron are the only Indian places in town where i go. Service is great and the buffet is always good and well stocked.
(5)Helen V.
We were visiting downtown Greenville and found this place. Great atmosphere and service. We ordered from the menu (not the buffet) vegan dishes. The ingredients were fresh and it was spiced just right.
(5)S S.
I came across this restaurant while jogging. All of a sudden, there was a wonderful curry smell in the air and I has to stop to figure out where it came from. I got back to the hotel and showered quickly so I could get back to restaurant before it closed. I'm glad I did, because everything was wonderful. The food was absolutely amazing. Also, the service was non-rushed as I ate at my own pace. I had the Handi Special since it had a little of everything...and it was a lot of food. Glad it was, because I ate it all. Next time I'm in town, I'll be back!

Went up to Greenville for the day and we were craving Indian food. We've all tried Handi during lunch for their excellent buffet. So we went for dinner. I ordered the Tandoori mixed grill. It had lamb, chicken, shrimp and fish. My friend got the chicken masala, and a few other dishes that I honestly can't remember the names. Our food came out about 30 minutes later, sizzling hot. All I could say is wow. The food was delicious. The tandoori mixed grill was so good. The fish and shrimp were my favorite. The lamb was alright, kinda on the dry side. The chicken masala was also very good. And everyone else seemed to enjoy their food as well. Also, the portions sizes are HUGE! Enough to fed two people and still have leftovers. I however didn't enjoy finding not one, but two flies in my water and $3 for nann? Why can't that be free? Still though, for dinner, Handi makes an excellent choice.

I love this place. Great Indian food. Lunch buffet is great. Go and get your fill!! The rice, chicken and flat bread and sauce go great together.
(5)Shurajit G.
Just a wonderful restaurant! Great food, great service, and great ambiance! I have been a very long time loyal customer of Handi Indian Cuisine and so are many of my students, colleagues and friends that I have I have introduced to this awesome restaurant. If you are looking at this review, just GO for it! You will love it!
(5)Alex X.
I tested the fresh made nan bread and yes it was delish!!! Unfortunately one of the ingredients ghee indian butter has salicylates which Im allergic too... oh so sad... I miss eating Indian food so much... but good bread means good food! Enjoy for me too... if my 99% food allergy goes away... I will be back. Indian food lover for life! :)
(4)Laurel R.
I absolutely loooooove this place. The food is expertly prepared. The staff are polite and knowledgeable. The flavors are excellent. Their tikka misala is amazing. And if you have time go to the lunch buffet. I eat here at least once or twice a month and Handi has never let me thus far.
(5)Erin B.
Stopped in for take out one a weekend day during the lunch buffet. The staff was extremely accommodating and gracious though I know my request was not convenient. The food however? The food was amazing!! Chicken tikka masala & vegetable korma. Asked for it hot, made my nose run. My only critique is that it was a little pricey. Nothing outlandish just a bit more than I would usually want to pay. Will go back judiciously.
(4)Monica H.
This is a great Indian restaurant. The owners are awesome, the food is tasty, and the ambiance is spot on. I love its convenience (right on Main Street!) and the variety of its offerings. I think it's a big testament to the owners' talent for making delicious Indian food that every item on the buffet tastes different; it's not just a buffet full of identical curries without any pizzazz. The food will satisfy both Indian food connoisseurs and newbies alike. I liked absolutely everything I ate there. Try it!
(5)Vang H.
I've been to (3) different Indian restaurants in town and this is hands-down my #1. Reasons being (1) they serve meat (2) they don't serve beef. This review isn't about the other places, so let's focus on Handi. Extremely clean and simple restaurant here. The owner and staff are polite and attentive. Enjoying variety, I always order the Thali plates for dinner - they come with a variety of items. They dishes come out served fresh and ready to please the taste buds! I've found that there isn't much spice in their dishes, so no need to worry there. Two months ago, I discovered their lunch buffet and haven't been able to bring myself back for dinner. Their buffet has such great quality products at such an incredible price. I would put it against any of the Indian restaurants in Atlanta in a heartbeat. The buffet offers your standard - tandoori, tikka masala, paleek / pea paneer, goat curry, etc. but it also has dosas and (veggie) samosas. If you enjoy Indian food, pay the $1-2 to park downtown and go here! You won't be disappointed. Be forewarned - you might need a nap afterwards.
(5)Donna K.
My sons introduced me to Handi and Indian Cuisine. I must say I was skeptical, but once I tried the food at this restaurant I was hooked. The staff and the atmosphere were both excellent. I have been when you had your choice of table and when they were full too. In my opinion, they should always be full. They seem to put a lot of love in their food. We try to go at least once a month now. The prices are moderate and the portions are generous. The food is always outstanding.
(5)Leo R.
This place is the real deal! The food is great, the customer service is stellar, and the food is served family style so it is easy to share. I didn't think I would find authentic Indian food in Greenville, but I sure did! Sampled a few different items that were good, the Somosas are great (I know basic, but it is a must have). The naan wasn't my favorite but it all washes down with mango lassi!
(5)Katie H.
I'm not good at remembering the names of all the dishes I've tried, but in my limited experience, I think Handi's food tastes the best out of all the Indian places I've tried in Greenville. Not to say that other places aren't good, I just think Handi tastes the best. I've never tried the lunch buffet, only the dinner menu, and mostly vegetarian dishes or the fish tikke masala. The naan is amazing; I always order the garlic. Since our first time, we've brought friends and family there who have enjoyed it as well.
(4)Isabella M.
This is my favorite restaurant downtown. The lunch buffet is reasonably priced and crazy good, and dinner service is lovely. Get the chicken korma and a mango lassi!! You will not be disappointed.
(5)Phil C.
I can't say enough nice things about this restaurant. The service is always wonderful (prompt, attentive, and they'll do stuff like throw in more rice if you decide to take home leftovers.) They're super vegetarian friendly (it *is* an Indian restaurant, after all) and have vegan options, too. If you've only been here for lunch, think of Handi for dinner as a different restaurant. While I love the lunch buffet (and it's a relatively cheap way to try a variety of dishes, particularly the desserts), the food is a little different (it sits out and the veggies can get a little tired, plus it's all mild on their mild-to-Indian-hot spice spectrum). So if you have the lunch buffet and aren't impressed, come back for dinner and get the full experience. You do need to order a bread (roti or naan) separately, but the waiters are usually good to prompt you. I always get the plain naan and I've never been disappointed, although the garlic naan is nice to change it up. The menu is expansive--it's organized into entire pages for chicken, fish, vegetarian, and then goat and lamb--and has pretty solid descriptions of everything, so you can take people who don't necessarily like Indian food here and let them scan until they see something that sounds good. This restaurant is a great opportunity to get goat in Greenville. If you do order it, keep in mind it's bone-in and can be a little messy, so order it when you're with someone who won't be embarrassed by you getting savory red sauce all over everything* (i.e., not on a date, or on some kind of low-stakes long-term-relationship date where this kind of thing is not a problem.) The mattar paneer is fantastic. I think my girlfriend gets this every single time we go. It's particularly rich compared to others I've had, and it's worth whatever ungodly milkfat calories that make it rich. It just might be Handi's best dish. The lamb rogan josh is amazing, and just clovey enough. I can also vouch for the chicken tikka masala (but seriously, branch out--chicken is the most boring meat), the lamb vindaloo, and the paneer kofta. They have a pretty complex kheer (rice pudding--nut warning!) that tastes like some kind of amazing cardamom ice cream. They also have mango firni (lovably wiggly custard) and gulab jamun (deep-fried sweet dough, think funnel cake, soaked in simple syrup). The best part is that they always have one of these three desserts at the lunch buffet, so you can try them out that way. They also do takeout, and they're pretty generous and throw in papadum and mint chutney just like you get if you dine in. * I think I have probably single-handedly ruined like ten linens here. They still like me, or they have a great laundry service.
(5)Susan A.
My husband and I chose Handi Cuisine of India for a Sunday lunch because it was a cold day. We were disappointed by many of the items on the buffet line. There were two dishes with potatoes; NO DAHL; no spinach paneer; and there was no naan for the longest time!! The flavors of the items we ate were good, but we realized we are spoiled by the Indian buffets near our home in North Carolina. We will not return to this Greenville restaurant the next time we visit.
(3)Kevin A.
We took advantage of the lunch buffet during the Saturday farmers market on Main St. The restaurant was surprisingly slow so we were not expecting much but were shocked by how awesomely fantastic the food is. The authentic flavors are wonderful and all food was cooked to perfection. The lunch buffet was modestly priced and worth every penny . Highly recommend Handi Indian Cuisine if you visit downtown Greenville.
(5)Anthony L.
For those who eat Indian food, this is THE place to go in Greenville. In summary, this place has an excellent variety of Indian dishes, very fresh food (including the lunch buffet), and friendly wait staff. My favorite dinner dish is Chicken Biryani (Indian Hot), and lunch Chicken Tikka Masala (Indian Hot). I've tasted their side dishes (potatoes, rice, mixed rice, vegetarian dishes, tandoori chicken, misc appetizers) and found them all to be excellent in taste, consistency, and fresh. I've been eating Indian Food for years in different states and I can tell you right now this place is by far the best I have ever been to.
(5)Calvin T.
I just had a wonderful lunch at this restaurant. I was born in India and travel extensively, and eat in many Indian restaurants throughout the USA, Canada and even Europe and I would simply say that this is definitely one of the finer Indian restaurants I have been to. Thank God I do not live here, or I would gain too much weight eating at Handi every day. You are fortunate Greenville, I hope you support this restaurant Kumar TB
(5)Sheridan P.
I ate at the lunch buffet. The food didn't look or taste like it had been sitting out unattended for hours, so that was great. Plenty of naan too! The servers sort of hover like birds of prey, ready to attack. But that was cool. It wouldn't have felt like an authentic Indian restaurant otherwise. When I told the server this, he let a half-giggle escape and put the bill on the table. So, double tip for that response.
(4)Will M.
For starters, I had the place to myself. Rainy and dark night. The waiter was in good spirits and sat me down next to the best painting in the place. The food was amazing and was delivered quickly. The dessert, mango kulfi was also perfect. Highly recommend it.
(5)Drew C.
Location was very nice and spotless. Service was very prompt and friendly. Had the lunch buffet and it was great! Mostly vegetarian but still a few meat dishes to choose from. Food on the buffet was very fresh and very delicious! Would def recommend it as a lunch spot downtown!
(4)Paul A.
This is a great place. My Vegan daughter eats here regularly and recommended it. Family owned, great service, and reasonably priced. I would not have guessed that potatoes and cauliflower could be a delicious entree (Aloo Gobhi). I had the lentils with garlic (Dal Makhni) which was also delicious.
(4)Janice G.
Cute restaurant, yuck food! Worst Indian experience I have had! I ordered Roti, tomato/onion chutney and the broccoli/mushroom dish from their veg menu. The Roti was tough like it came out of the microwave, the complimentary pappadums were stale, chutney inedible. The most disgusting part of my meal was the gravel-like texture of the mushrooms that I'm pretty certain was dirt. Really gross, and very disappointing.

I was visiting a friend that moved to Greenville for work at the beginning of the month. He suggested we go to Handi for lunch on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. I was hesistant because I have never tried Indian. (Weird because I work in NYC and there are a plethora of Indian Restaurants). I was pleasantly surprised by the decor and the service. The owner (a former New Yorker himself), was very friendly and accomodating. They have a buffet lunch and it was outstanding. Now, I must say that I played it safe but what I had was amazing. The tandoori chicken was just wonderfully prepared, the nan bread was delish and the rice was perfect. To end this experience, I tried the gulab jamun. It was AMAZING, not too sweet, the texture was perfect. Now, they had a lot of variety at the buffet but as I said above, this was my first time and I really enjoyed it. I was surprised to have enjoyed my new food adventure in Greenville, SC. If you live in the area, or are there on business, I highly recommend Handi Indian Cuisine. Victoria.
(5)Juliana S.
This is one of my favorite restaurants in Greenville. The lunch buffet is great and has a good selection of the menu, all mild spicy. The food is always fresh and has a homemade taste, so I can't get enough of it and will never get tired of it either. Staff is very friendly and they are authentic Indians. The atmosphere is cozy and the dinner prices are also fine. More than recommended!
(5)Phillip S.
Fantastic food! eye catchy insides oh did I mention the fantastic food! Best place Indian cuisine in 2 cities (Cola/Vegas) that I've found so far real tasty and safe
(5)Eric S.
Excellent Lunch Buffet. Everything was delicious. The restaurant was a few short blocks from the Reedy River Park and worth the walk.

SUCKS!!!!!! This ain't Indian food. Take it from an Indian!!!! Had to give it that one star cuz that's how yelp works.
(1)Michael B.
First time eating Indian Cuisine in Greenville, SC and it was fantastic!! Had read a Yelp review and decided to try it, so glad I did!!! Met a friend there for lunch (she's vegetarian) and we both loved it. The staff was wonderful, the lunch buffet had a great selection of items and all was fresh.

Hey! Whatsup? Sat nam! Handi Indian is kewl, but a little assey. Kewl: The food is good Northern Indian, with a wider selection of meats (goat, lamb) than you might find at other places. Unlike some Indian restaurants, they don't charge extra for rice, but include a nice, big helping with your food. The samosas were the samost-est! Assey: The service was a little mixed: despite mentioning it twice, they didn't understand that my bigs' were actually the first half of a party of four. Then, maybe to make up for it, they were a little over-attentive during the meal, refilling drinks and water and checking in a little too often. But that's just being picky. My bigs are pretty picky. You know how the gays are. Overall, it's kewl! And I should know, because I have a guru in my snaggletooth. Thank you I know.
(3)Mark R.
Handi has some of the best indian food I've tasted. Indian dishes that I don't normally care about are surprisingly good here. If you are new to indian food or would like a low risk way to try new thing you should go to their lunch buffet. It a good price and you can sample a large variety and see what you like. The quality of the food in the buffet is good too, probably due to it's popularity and the food getting turned over quickly. I definately recomend it.
(5)Julie S.
Enjoyed our meal here with friends. Shared chicken tandoori and masala veggies with my husband and I think we polished off both plates (good thing we were really hungry, because that was a LOT of food, too!). One of our friends had some kind of spicy shrimp that was also pretty tasty. Service was friendly but maybe a tad on the annoyingly attentive side.
(4)Hardy E.
Great buffet at lunch.
(5)Marco S.
I have travelled all over India and adore Indian food. Handi serves up excellent grub, similar to food that you'd get in an Indian family home. It isn't Indian food designed for westerners like some places serve, but the real deal. It's a family-run restaurant and the service is good and friendly. There's always a great selection of veggie dishes, including masala dhosa, brinjal, and bhindi. Breads are good and fresh from the tandoor. They use what's fresh and seasonal too, which is a big plus in my book. They'll also serve you a very good cup of tea. Just ask for masala chai (Indian style) and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Five stars from me.
(5)Sez A.
I am a big fan of indian food and I thought the food was consistently tasty at Handi's. So 5 stars for the food. Not so much for the service and the atmosphere. It might be the decoration but the place has a dirty look! Also, when i was there the last time someone from the kitchen came out to clean the tables with filthy cart with dirty dishes and silverware piled so high things were falling from the cart. And this was being pushed through the dinning room where we were eating. Disgusting!!!

Go for the lunch buffet! Best bang for your buck. There are so many options at the lunch buffet - samosas, chicken tikka masala, chicken curry, goat curry, vegetable korma, biryani, palak paneer, dosa, etc. There are also a few dessert options including indian rice pudding and fruit. The service is great and the staff are very friendly and accommodating. And its family owned :) The lunch buffet pairs perfectly with a cold mango lassi! Added perk: you can get delta dining rewards here!

Stopped in for the lunch buffet on a Sunday, barely ahead of the rush that occurred about 1:30 or so. Enjoyed everything on the buffet. The atmosphere is okay, if a bit loud due to plenty of hard surfaces. Everything on the buffet was fresh, with enough traffic to force frequent turnover. The service was fine, with all three servers stopping by the table at one point or another. Price was more than fair, given the quality of the food, and all you can eat.

I went for lunch with a group of Cognizant developers for a holiday celebration. I had the buffet. It was excellent. In particular, I enjoyed the Vegetable (Navratan) Korma. It is my favorite Indian recipe. Each restaurants recipe is different. Sometimes significantly different. This recipe was excellent. Service is good. Parking is a little difficult but the downtown atmosphere is worth the inconvenience. I am not sure of the pricing because I did not pay but I expect it is reasonable.

Handi's lunch buffet was great and well-priced. Although the selection was modest for an Indian restaurant, the food was fresh. Eating at the buffet was only about $7. I've also had dinner here before. If you're looking for an Indian restaurant in Greenville, this is a great choice, especially because it's downtown.

I like their buffet's, it might not be extensive but it's got pretty good food.

Fantastic Indian food, and my waiter (who sounded a lot like Don Corleone) was superb.

Pretty darn good! I was somewhat skeptical about ethnic food in G'ville but this was great... Clean, tasty, varied, and pleasant wait staff.

This is one of the restaurants that my husband and I come back to time and again because of its consistently delicious food, terrific service and pleasant ambiance. We love the samosa appetizer and the vegetarian dishes.

I stopped by and sat on there patio, which is dog friendly, and dined on Sunday evening. The service was wonderful, it is a family owned and run place. I started with some soup that had wonderful flavors but a touch too salty for my palate. Then the vegetable vindaloo had great flavors and fresh vegetables. The long grain basmati rice it was served with was a bit sad, but the garlic Naan and yogurt dip was lovely. I never saw the mint chutney the dish was said to be served with? I will definitely go back, I would like to try other items on the menu.

We ate here after enjoying the downtown shopping experience. Had excellent Chicken Masala, a very good broccoli/mushroom dish, excellent excellent carrot dessert. We each had two plates from the buffet, a real bargain at just under $10 each. Definitely a new favorite restaurant for us!

Lunch Review. Had the Buffet with a drink which works out to about $10 dollars. Food choice where small salad bar, about 4 veg choices and 4 meat choices. Nothing was terrible, Nothing was memorable. As far as I know the only choice for Indian in downtown.

My firends and I went here to celebrate out friends birthday. We arrived for the lunch buffet (which has upped in price, I believe) and it was nt too crowded on a weekend. They were constantly bringing out re fills for the buffet dishes, so nice to know everything was fresh. The service was nt so great.

3.75 stars. In a nutshell: the food is at the higher spectrum of "decent." The quality of the meat, spices and sauces is very high but overall too salty. The atmosphere and overall dining experience were great. Great interior decorator! Wood, subtle lights, nice tables. Classy. We arrived on a Wed. night, at about 6:30pm, and were promptly seated. They offered "chilled" or "regular" water, which was surprising since I have never encountered such an option. We went with the "regular" water, which is basically water with no ice. I'm not sure if "chilled" means bottled. We received the paratha as a complimentary start to the meal. It was perfectly peppery and was accompanied with a mint sauce. I'm usually apprehensive about sauces because they're generally overly-sweet or overly salty, but this was perfectly balanced. It was slightly sweet but had other complex subtle flavours. Very good. The paratha was light, crispy and flavourful-- not stale at all. For appetizers, we ordered the Pishawri Naan ($3.25) (coconut and cherry filled) and the onion .. Although the thought of a sweet naan initially turned my stomach, the more I thought of it as a dessert naan, the more appetizing it became. The verdict was a fifty-fifty draw. There were 4 people in our party and 4 pieces so we each had a slice. The pishawri naan arrived sliced in half (like a sandwich) with a sprinkling of coconut and a light glaze of cherry (probably jelly) inside and accompanied with a raita (cucumber sauce). Ex-nay on the raita. I had a half of a half of a piece and had had enough. Just like the previous sentence, the pishawri was repetitive and boring. It could be much improved if there had at least used cherry jam with the chunks or even cherry pie filling. Instead, it was as if they had scraped the last of the jelly from the bottom of the jar. My friend M took one bite and gave the rest to G ... because she doesn't care for coconut. G and R both enjoyed it. A much, much better appetizer was the Onion Bhajia ($4.95), which are sliced onions coated with yogurt and gram flour and fried. Delicious! The accompanying tamarind sauce was delightful. The portion was immense and although the onions were fried, they were not limp or greasy nor overly salty. I would definitely return for this dish! Following the appetizers, we ordered the Handi Biryani ($15.95), which is described as "long grain basmati rice flavored with saffron and cooked together with shrimp, scallops, chicken and nuts in a delicate blend of spices." It was good but not great. I couldn't really taste the saffron (which is an extremely expensive spice) and the rest of the spices blurred together but in a bland way. I've definitely had better biryani. Needs a couple of cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods and SAFFRON. On a positive note, the seafood was very moist. M ordered the lamb tikka masala ($14.95) which was probably the best of the dishes. It was creamy with the perfect consistency but it was too salty. It was obviously seasoned but lacked differentiation between the flavours. I ordered my favorite -- lamb vindaloo ($13.95). It was ok but not phenomenal. The sauce needed more vinegary tang and WAY LESS salt. It was too salty. Although it was ok, I would not order this again from here. It was so underwhelming that as I ate it, I wished that I had instead ordered the palak paneer. The chicken madras ($12.95) was good. It is a mild chicken curry with cinnamon and lemon. Slightly on the sweeter side. The sweet is emphasized by the cinnamon. I ordered a roti ($2.50) and was disappointed. Instead of the fluffy poofball of a bread, I received four FLAT pieces of bread that reminded me of a thicker whole wheat tortilla. Besides that, the roti slices were greasy--slicked with oil. Aside from the slightly better than ok food, the service was good. M wanted a chilled tea but was initially concerned that it would be too sugary. The waiter was very patient and offered to change the tea if it arrived too sugary ... which it was. He promptly returned it ... and this time it was perfect. Our water glasses were refilled quickly and the waiters often stopped by to make sure dishes were cleared. I was disappointed because prior to ordering, I inquired about a side of hot sauce in case "hot" proved to be insufficient for my taste buds. I again asked for a side of hot sauce while ordering the meal. I did not receive it. However, post-meal, one of the waiters brought me a to-go container of hot sauce to enjoy with the boxed left-overs, which I thought was a nice gesture. In addition, we also received two complimentary desserts-- the kulfi and mango kulfi, which are Indian ice creams. Amazing. I couldn't decide which I liked better. Both are superb. I would definitely return but next time, specify "easy with the salt." Flavours and spices should be given precedence. Handi offers good food and a great dining atmosphere. A very good place to take a date. The kulfi is not to miss!

I have eaten here several times for the buffet, but it is clear to me immediately that this is possibly the best Indian food in Greenville. Depending on what they have on the buffet on a particular day, it's either a little better or a little worse than Saffron Cusine. They offered samosas and (empty) dosas with tamarind sauce and green coconut sauces as appetizers, and many vegetable and meat dishes on the buffet--chicken krahi, chicken makhni, chicken tandoori, matar aloo, bhindi masala, goat curry, naan bread, and a delightful carrot halwa dessert. Everything was seasoned elegantly. The decor was clean and tasteful; the music was pleasant. The servers were polite. The buffet is reasonably priced at only $10 for such good food. I got there fairly late into lunch, but the buffet was fully stocked and each chaffing dish was filled with tender, fresh dishes. Overall, it was just a superb experience. The only drawback is the location--good luck finding a parking space on Main St. Unless the parking gods smile on you, you're going to have to park elsewhere and hoof it down town. Handi isn't handy, but there is a public parking garage across the street behind Mast General Store. Can't wait to go back. Kheer rating: 4 out of 5 stars--very good but needs a touch of rose water. Mango Lassi rating: 3 out of 5: it comes with ice and if you put a straw in it, it will fall over. ( Straws will stand up in lassi at Saffron Cusine: 5 out of 5 there.) The items on the weekend buffet have been the same since I've been going, so, while they're good, there is less variety than what you'd get at Saffron Cuisine, where they change things up more.
