Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Sooooo good! And very affordable. Lunch buffet is all you can eat for $7.99. And it has good stuff in it.

My family and I have tried to become regulars at Compadre's downtown location. We usually get a lot of take out but one particular Sunday we decided to eat inside the restaurant. The 4 of us stood at the WAIT TO BE SEATED sign for 10 minutes without any acknowledgment from staff, even though there was an available booth! After being seated, without menus, N0 ONE EVER came to our table to serve or acknowledge our presence. In order to give the kids closure we tried again. The same situation happened all over again. Now we have to try to answer the question of an 8 & 10 year old, which is: Why didn't they want us to eat there? The restaurant was completely full with white patrons, we were the ONLY Black family BOTH times. Even while getting take out for a year we were only treated decently by Tavo, BUT we always thought it was because they were busy that we were ignored. I can now UNFORTUNATELY say it could ONLY be because we are BLACK. Sad but true. For whatever is worth, I responded directly via email as requested and I NEVER RECEIVED A REPLY BACK. Wow! I waited 7 days.

The food was fresh and delicious. Items you don't find everywhere like cactus. The table side fresh guacamole made with mangoes and cucumbers (fresh jalapeños optional) is not to be missed. There was live music and the whole restaurant was singing along. Such a fun, upbeat and family oriented atmosphere.

After perusing some of the other reviews for Compadre's, it seems I had a very different experience than a lot of the people rating this restaurant 2-3 stars. I'd eaten at Compadres before and thought it far superior to the other Mexican restaurants in downtown Greenville (though certainly not the best I've had or even the best in the area as a whole). And then recently I had dinner here with my family at around 5 PM on a Thursday night. We were practically the only people in the restaurant. Service was timely and friendly. The manager stopped by our table at one point to make sure everything was okay (it was). In terms of atmosphere and service, this restaurant is far superior to Cantinflas and Guadalajara on North Main. It also has better margaritas than them, and I used to think Compadres had better food as well. But it appears they've revamped their menu since the last time I ate here, and I wasn't overly impressed with anything this time around. The fajitas and flautas were okay, though the beef for the fajitas was pretty dry and tough and the chicken in my flautas was dry as well. The rice served on the side was so bland it was sad, and why in the world do I have to pay extra for sour cream at a sit-down restaurant? It seems that they may have stepped up their service game, but overall I'm disappointed, especially compared to how I remember enjoying Compadres the last time I ate/drank here.

The tortilla soup was disappointing. There was only a thin broth and a handful of chips- no beans, corn, tomatoes, or chicken at all. Service was fairly prompt. If I had noticed the buffet first, I probably would have chosen that. The server didn't mention it though. I will definitely go back to try the buffet.

Good food. Loved the atmosphere. Went at lunchtime and enjoyed the buffet. Loved everything that I tried. Will definitely be back. Service was very attentive and friendly!

Iama Critic Rating - Compadres Mex Mex - 3 Stars 929 South Main Street, Greenville, SC Overall: Another run of the mill Mexican place --- "Yawn" with the occasional 4 star entree. Check out Papa's and Beer instead! Table Chips - 3 Stars These chips are just like the ones you have eaten a thousand times. The salsa was more like picante, too runny, and the hot was simply not hot. Give us chunky hot salsa or give us death! $16.99 Parrillada - 4 Stars This combo appetizer comes with Grilled Steak, Chicken, Shrimp, Chorizo, Fried Bananas, Potato Chips, Onions, Poblano, Bell Pepper, Jalapeños Toreados, with Tortillas and Black Beans. We have had this at various restaurants under various names and it is always expensive. Compadres Mex Mex Grill is no different, charging $17, but their mix of items and flavors were fantastic. All the veggies and meat were cooked perfectly. What a delightful dish, and just look at that pablano! Now this is Mexican! Sadly the bowl of black beans it came with were seriously boring. Burrito de Puerco - 3 Stars This burrito is filled with Pork, Onion, Bell Pepper & Pico de Gallo, topped with Green Sauce and Melted Cheese Served with Rice or Beans. They say it is a special recipe, we say it needs a little work. Like some actual spices would really help. The Pico de Gallo was top notch though. $10.99 Steak Fajitas - 3 Stars These fajita's were a mix of green and red bell pepper, (because bell peppers are Mexican, don't you know!), and onions with the steak on top to hide all the veggies. The entree was serves hot and steamy, but too al-dente. unfortunately the flavor was as average as the mix and presentation. Nothing at all special here, although the price is slightly below average. Guacamole Appetizer - 1 star (due to health hazard of bowl) This guacamole is a seriously interesting combination of finely chopped ingredients, although it was a tad too salty. The guacamole itself is worthy of three stars. However, none of this matters because the guacamole is served in a completely porous, seriously rough Molcajete bowl. Food particles enters all those porous holes and there is no way for a restaurant to clean this bowl. They can kill the bacteria but they can't get it out of the cavities in this bowl. We have eaten out of Molcajete bowls hundreds of times, but they always have a semi smooth, non-porous surface on the inside of the bowl. This bowl is flat out dangerous! You might as well eat off your concrete driveway which is much smoother! I have never seen a bowl this porous used for the serving of food.

Super good Mexican, we came after a baseball game at Fluor Field and it was really nice. Our waiter was very good and attentive (but not overly so) and made us fresh guac right in front of us. I had the street tacos which were delicious and fresh tasting. My husband had a crazy burrito which he really liked. We also had chorizo/habenero queso dip which was delicious! We will definitely be back.

Meh, food-wise this place was A-okay, but service-wise, it was definitely lacking. I'll start with the food first. I got the chicken burrito and asked that it come with lettuce and tomato. It was entirely decent, good, Mexican food. The chips on the table were nice and thin/crispy, and the salsa was a biiiiit on the spicy side but not overwhelmingly so. Everyone around me seemed pretty pleased with their orders. I'd say the dish that we ordered that looked most appealing was the grilled chicken breast covered with tomato and mango salsa. Nice on the eyes, for sure. I'm a big sucker for a quickly-refilled cup of water, so I was disappointed when I kept having to ask for it to be refilled. I had to leave in a hurry (I'm always late) but when I needed to ask the waitress for my check, she was nowhere to be found! ...this was to the point that, after giving the waitstaff plenty of exasperated looks, I decided to ask the busboy for the ticket. It got the job done. BUT then there was a biiiig mix-up with what we were charged for, and basically I got charged an extra $22. They assured me it would be taken care of but a few days later I looked at my bank and no dice. Eventually, after I called, we got everything worked out. But it was a needless hassle. DO ask for their "suicide margarita", though. It's well worth the visit in itself.

I'd give this 2 1/2 stars if I could. I was excited about the new menu, disappointed with the food. Compadres used to be so fresh and different. Tonight's food tasted tired and blah. The salsa was not nearly as yummy and "cilantro-y" as it used to be. The service was the pits, too.
(3)Amanda P.
On nights where they have live music make sure you don't sit too close to the front because it gets LOUD. Such a fun place to come though, especially if you have a birthday or celebration. The taco salad is a safe bet and while it has never disappointed, the real reason this place gets my business is the suicide margarita!!! A blend of margarita flavors and packin' some punch, this drink is for the pros.
(4)Andrea B.
Good mexican. The burritos are huge and good margs to wash them down. The best before a Drive game.
(4)Mary D.
For your typical Mexican restaurant, I think this one is pretty good! Staff is friendly and seems pretty clean. If I was trying to decide on this type of mexican in downtown Greenville this would be my pick.

Pretty average, but good Mexican food. There wasn't anything spectacular about our meal, and I have an aversion to places that use "Mex-Mex" in their name. Especially when said place has a "Tex-Mex" page contained within their menu. Confusing. I tried a few dishes around the table, and there are some interesting choices. The Carnitas tasted great though were a bit dry when delivered to the table. A dish that I was not familiar with seemed interesting enough to order, and that was the Molcajetes. Upon further investigation (i.e., Google) I found out that the name of the dish refers to the stone serving dish, also used in Mexican cooking as a mortar and pestle. It came to our table looking impressive, but there was a lingering confusion on how to actually eat the dish. Tortillas upon request? Do we eat the cactus? Eh, I'm just glad I didn't actually order it. After much indecision I went with the fajitas..real original, right? I will say that they were very good and this place seasons their steak well. It went even better in my breakfast the next day. Everything was fairly priced compared to similar restaurants. Another note: the menu says that you can only get one refill on your soda, and extra chips will cost you. The first hit is free, however.

Geez... Ok lets begin. Atmosphere: Nice. It's right next to the baseball park and has some local art on the walls. the bar looks nice and everything looked more or less clean. Service: According to the wife, "Horrid, absolutely horrid. It was gawd awful. There are no words to describe how bad it was." Well, Thats one way to put it. Let me start by saying, My wife and I have worked in the service industry for a while now. We're very understanding people. We don't look for problems. I should have know when it took us 10min to be seated(not a 10 min wait. I'm talking 10min before someone came to the host station to see what we wanted), in a resturant with lots of open tables. Upon being seated it took another 20min for anyone to take our order. To get our order was, no exaggeration, another 40 MIN! In case your keeping track, thats 1 hour and 10 min. from door to food in a restuarant with open tables. In the years I've known my wife she has never complained at a restuarant... Tonight was the FIRST time! To make matter worse they blamed the bad service on "an unexpected crowd", on memorial day weekend.. with a baseball game going on next door.... did I mention we were seated at an empty table? By the way, If anyone wants a coupon for (2) free margaritas (small) let me know... I will not be using them. Food: Honestly, I've had better mexican food from taco bell. The burrito's were dry and lifeless and without cheese. the chicken tamales (btw we ordered pork and they got it wrong) were SO SALTY it was beyond human consumption. We passed bites around the table to see the reactions and laugh as they looked for a napkin to spit it into. The chicken nachos.... for some odd reason tasted like fish. How chicken tastes like fish I have no idea, but it did and it wasen't a good thing. I'm trying to think of something nice to say about the food..... well, the beer was wet. Bottom Line: NO! NO NO NO NO NO NO NO! Avoid at all cost. Not worth your hard earned time and money. Why would you do that to yourself? Just go somewhere else. You'll be happier. I just want you to be happy...

In our constant struggle to find somewhere decent we stumbled upon a review of this place...as usual the review promised great food, wonderful margaritas, stunning atmosphere...all your standard garbage... So we got a mixed bag here...atmosphere...not so much... has the typical shopping center storefront suburban feel, and yup, I know this is "downtown"...can't fool me there Upstate...it feels just like a shopping center in this restaurant. There seemed to be a decent amount of customers for a Saturday, not overwhelming, but enough to know the place might have promise... Let me stress that we like our margaritas...and these were decent on the first margarita...a little tequila burn, not so mix-y-mix-y...and they listened that I hate salt...we ordered mediums...had two of those bad boys...and we had two small margaritas after those two mediums...we felt the drinks became weaker and more mix-y as the evening went on, but we overlooked that...because we were having a decent time, before we became the only people in the restaurant at ten o'clock at night...but I digress... For food...Well, my cheese dip never had that magical moment of "thickening" that I enjoy while I am at a restaurant...I want that crap the consistency of glue so that when I mix it with the salsa, it doesn't dribble on my clothes...and it was served in this greasy little "tortilla shell bowl" that reminded me of Taco-Bell taco salad bowls, just the mini-me version...my husband said his burritos were generic... To sum this one up, we didn't see what was special about the food...average and slightly on the tasteless side...margaritas were decent... What wasn't decent was the eighty dollar bill we got...I know we had a few margaritas...but it's not like we had these margaritas made "top shelf" or had them at a swanky place with a view...or were provided with particularly comfortable chairs to sit in... There is a Rachel Ray cookbook (and I can't believe I am actually suggesting this, but she doesn't talk in her cookbooks so that makes it okay in my head) that has a decent quesadilla recipe with smoked cheese in it...I suggest eating those with some homemade blender margaritas with a splash of orange juice and triple sec...and you can save money and drink a lot more...

Although we didn't order the sunday brunch buffet, we noticed the eggs they used for their omelets were not kept cold or refrigerated in any way. Just sat stacked on a table. With the recent salmonella outbreak, and the fact this is a big food safety no-no, buyer beware and look out for "Montezuma's Revenge" come Sunday night. Surprised they haven't been shut down for this infraction.

Nothing bad, but nothing extraordinary.
(3)Galen C.
The food is good and it's by the stadium. Fresh guacamole and the best margaritas. Sit out back.

Maybe I'm a little unwearied, as this is my first (and long awaited) experience with a Mexican buffet (we hit the Sunday brunch bar), but I thought the food was better than some of these posters are giving it credit for. Yes, the service was a bit slow. We were seated immediately, but it took several minutes for anyone to come and take our drink orders and offer us a menu (one guy brought out chips and salsa but just dropped them off and left). There was only 1 other table occupied and my usually-patient daughter was becoming less than... And yes, the burritos were just a bit dry, but nothing a little salsa (which was dynamite!) and sour cream didn't fix. And cheese? There was an entire bowl of shredded Asaredo on the bar (it went on everything!). The real highlight of my meal (and what pushed me over the edge because they brought more out when I thought I was done, and I couldn't pass...) were the bacon, egg & potato quesadillas! Wowsers! Atmosphere was nice and staff was friendly.

Had Tavo's Special Ceviche with Mango and it was absolutely PERFECT for anyone watching their weight! Completely delicious! Next time I will ask for extra slices of avocado, because it is so delicious - but this is a MUST TRY!!!!

Best chile relleno that I've ever had. Was quickly met at the door, sat where we wanted, the waitress was great, all around great evening. I've had better fish tacos, but these were good too.
(4)Chip D.
Fish tacos where pretty good but nothing special. They could of used slaw or something else on them. Besides fish and lettuce. Maybe a chipotle mayo or something. Chips and salsa where good and my wife had beef nachos that where spot on. Most important, the beer was served ice cold. Great location that is not real crowded unless there is a baseball game.
(4)Dan B.
i have had a few friends that rave about this place, but I have to say it is just so so. This is downtown Greenville, and so I expect better. It may be half a notch better than the worst of the worst in Mexican food around here but that is not up to par for the neighborhood. If you want good Mexican food, go to El Jimador in Clemson or My Taco in Anderson. If you want great service the veteran waitstaff at Pancho's in Liberty SC is the place to go. If you like stale chips, tasteless salsa, dishes with absolutely no flavor, this is your place.
