The food is fresh and has lots of flavor. The atmosphere is great and the servers are very nice. I've tried many things on their menu and I have never been disappointed. All of their salsas are fantastic! The spicy ranch chicken tacos and the vegan burrito are two of my favorites.

Every time I come to Greenville this is a must stop place! The food is great along with the atmosphere. Service is always fast and gracious. If you don't want to eat bar has great selection and the bartenders ROCK! If you are visiting Greenville you must put this on your list to stop at.

Very good food at a reasonable price. Free chips and salsa during happy hour. It's a small place and easy to miss walking down Main Street. The crab cake sandwich is solid. The downtown spot is better than the Mauldin location. Satisfaction is all about expectations. If you expect a low key spot with good food then you'll be happy. I'll be back.

Great meats and fresh fruit salsas, good beer selection, great location. I really like chicora alley.

I am visiting Greenville and came here because I saw they have vegan options and they have a bunch! All burgers can be made with either a black bean or jerk tofu patty. They also have several options (burritos included) fully vegan already. Delicious. I ordered the Mideast burger with the tofu jerk patty and it was so great! The non-vegan friends I went with also loved their meals, none of us could finish the food and have delicious leftovers for tomorrow now :)

Jerk tofu plate is awesome!!! They have very good selection of vegetarian and vegan options. And the good thing is they are open late.

A friend was raving about this place and we finally gave it a try. It is modestly priced; and the food is modestly good (at best). Would go there again....

I'm probably here once every two weeks and am always satisfied. Chicora features caribbean/southern/southwestern style food at a great price. Burritos with collards and sweet potatoes are right up my alley (pun somewhat intended). Usually gets crowded on weekend evenings but it's definitely worth the wait. They have a lot of bar space when the back room is open and good selection of booze. Recommend shrimp and grits, shrimp quesadilla, and chicken burrito. Definitely worth multiple visits and always a good crowd.

I enjoy coming here for the food, but that's pretty much the only reason. So we'll start with that. The food here is great. I guess it's kind of a carribean fusion place. I really like the sweet and spicy flavor combinations that they use. The salsa is killer. I love that they utilize a lot different flavors with cheeses and fruit. So good. Now, the service is pretty terrible. They're really slow, even during non-peak hours. I went for a late lunch on a Saturday once, maybe 2 pm? We probably waited for 45 mins for our food. And the server didn't come by to check on us very often, and I kept running out of water. I've also been at night, when it's a bar only. We were there for nearly 20 mins and no one would serve us. It looked like the bartenders were super busy, so at least no one was standing around doing nothing, but all I wanted to get was a beer. We ended up just leaving. So, I'd go for the food if you've got the time, but I wouldn't visit the bar again. There are plenty of bars in Greenville that will serve you.

Wow...incredibly bad food. The Menu is very limited and mostly bar food. Asked waiter what was good and I knew that I was in trouble when he steered me away from most everything except the brisket burrito. Brisket? Should have just called it stewed meat burrito. It was without flavor..watery and soggy wrap. Wife had mile high nachos and it was just as bad. I could see this place being good when your buzzing and hungry. Not a good destination. A gathering place where you come to drink and maybe eat..although I wouldn't recommend eating

We are crab cake snobs!! We would never have tried the crab cake sandwich at Chicora if Justin, our amazing bartender, had not convinced us to try them. Love, love!! An absolute must and top of our list for Greenville's best Crab Cake!! We have always loved Chicora and their amazing nachos, tacos and burritos with a twist but hands down this is our new favorite!! Thank you Justin and the amazing staff at Chicora for another delicious meal (yummy house margarita included!!)

Took a group of friends here this week. I made a reservation as I was unsure of how busy they would be, and we were a group. No problem making a reservation and they had the table ready when we got there. The service was friendly, but they could have been a bit more attentive. I had a burger and was really unimpressed. Though I thought the sweet potato fries were great. You get a complimentary basket of chips and they were pretty standard fare. I think everyone else in my party enjoyed their food. We had a bit everything- quesadilas, the vegan burrito, Mama's Chessy Chicken Enchilada, and fish tacos. The restaurant was pretty loud, even though the place was not really busy. The vibe was very laid back and hippy-ish. Kind of reminds me of a Mellow Mushroom, but the food wasn't quite as good.

My wife and i both had taco plates. The food was very fresh and the service was excellent. I thought the rice and beans were a bit plain, but my wife loved them. Overall i thought the food was above average and the service and atmosphere were great. I would go again, but probably just for apps and drinks.

Amazing mix of Caribbean and Southern! Shrimp and Grits were great! Best crab cakes...ever! Curried collards...while sounds like something sacrilegious to most southerners where a great twist on one of my favorites. Staff (Justin) was one of the best servers we've ever had. Helpful on explaining the menu (which has a ton to choose from and all unique). Great beer selection, too. Not sure what there was not to like! Quit bitching about the wooden chairs...it's a bar and grill...not Morton's...and I'll come here again before I'll go back to Morton's.

Went yesterday evening, party of three. Our first visit to Chicora Alley. Pro: Food was great. I had the Mom's Chicken Enchilada, and it was very tasty. Meh: Service was just okay. Bar ran out of House chardonnay after one glass. What? This was early in the evening (6:15) and they didn't have another chardonnay. If I am the manager, I am sending someone out for several bottles to cover the evening, if I was inept enough to not check stock prior to opening. Con: Hardwood floors, solid walls... no acoustics. The restaurant was maybe 3/4 full, and you could only be heard by talking very loudly with others at your table. If the owner reads this: Perhaps you should consider carpet or cork panels on the walls or ceiling. The noise level was uncomfortably high, and despite the great food, we won't return until this issue is addressed.

Went here for a snack and some drinks on this gorgeous Tuesday we just had. We ordered the brisket nachos, as I've heard and read many great things about that appetizer, and wasn't impressed. I wasn't expecting pineapple on nachos, and it was quite a bit. The brisket wasn't hot and the chips weren't crispy. We sat at the bar, and the service was excellent. I just don't recommend the nachos, but I would come back to try something else.

Best nachos in town (if you like the kitchen sink in your nachos). Has everything, I love them...but not for your meat and chips people though.....Never had anything bad here...one of my favorite hang out spots downtown. If you don't like the front stairs go in the back door people...Just saying...Good food, ice cold beer hey you can't go wrong...

Food is always good, but I had a horrible experience with one of the server "Lauren Aka lolo". To order a drink it took 10 minutes, another 10 to make it and get to our table (and it wasn't even crowded)... Another 15 minutes for her to come back and take our order. After our food arrived, we called her service a "drive by service" because as she walked away she took our glasses without asking for another, had to ask for refills. Had to flag her down for our bill, which she swiped my credit car for someone else's table, then voided, then charged my table- without any apologies. I love their food, but next time I go back and she's my server, I'll be asking for a different server or walk out.

If it weren't for a local telling me about this place, it would not have been found. Being on the second floor, I walked by this place numerous times and didn't realize it was restaurant because it wasn't on the first floor. We ordered a few appetizers, the deep fried macaroni and cheese, and conch fritters. Both were a first and were very good. For my main dish, I ordered the Jerk Chicken bowl. WOW!!. Loved the mango in it. However, overall, great flavor and prepared nicely. Will definitely go back next time in Greenville.

One of the best dive bars I've been to. The first Mexican/Caribbean fusion dive bar however. The Gaelic Red was amazing and the Jerk Shrimp with rice and beans and plantains was unforgettable. Try their homemade salsa and hot sauce if you like spicy. A must when in Greenville.

Walking up stairs to what looks like an apartment, you open the door (on the right) to find a really cute place. Nice vibe and vegan-friendly. The vegan burrito was delish! Our server, Star was amazing. The prices are reasonable and the food portions are great and flavorful. We will be back when we visit G'ville again.

Chicora Alley has the most amazing and mouth watering 'Mile High Nachos' you will ever find in Greenville, and quite possibly, any where else on Earth! It comes with a combination of several different salsas, which are different (such as the one with grapes) but wonderfully delicious. Though it is an appetizer, there is so much of it that you can have it as a main course. There are many other scrumptious dishes on the menu worth ordering as well. The atmosphere is relaxing and the wait staff is very friendly. There was a time when my to-go order was mixed up and they were went out of their way to fix the issue. That alone would be a reason to visit this lovely restaurant.

It's in an odd spot- upstairs over other businesses and through a door that doesn't look at all welcoming. After I decided to try the door and found that I was not in the storage room, as I suspected, I was quickly seated. I had a super quick lunch- the veggie plate. The plate included a small salad with a yummy white dressing, spicy black beans, a creamy sweet potato mash and rice. All of it was excellent, served super quick and less than $8.

I like Chicora as a bar to hang out in, and I love some of their menu options (the house salad dressing is great, as are the fried mac and cheese and the roasted red pepper quesadilla). But I think it's just a bit too loud to be a good place to eat dinner; also, while I've always experienced stellar service at the bar (especially the one in the back), table service is okay at best. The employees are friendly but always seem to be a bit absent-minded, as every time I've eaten here I've had to ask at least twice when ordering another beer. Speaking of beer, though, they have a good beer selection, as well as some great (and numerous) vegetarian items. Prices are decent as well, especially for downtown - on my last visit I had the aforementioned quesadilla and two beers and with tax it came to under $18. I do wish they had a better entrance because I always feel weird taking people up there for the first time, but once inside the noise level is really the only 'issue' with the location.

Had dinner with my daughter service was great Attentive and not hovering but always available! We were there and had free chips and salsa due to being there at happy hour Meal #1 fish tacos ... Daughter loved and were fresh and yummy served with rice and black beans Meal #2 California Burger Toppings of spinach , roasted red pepper ,grilled onions and goat Cheese were great! Bun was fair and simple , burger was well done --BTW I was not asked how I would like this cooked. Burger was fair and came in two pieces as if the cook was unsure as if it was done I accepted it but probably should have sent it back Sweet potatoe fries and jalapeño ketchup rocks I will go back but avoid a burger next time !

This place has very friendly service, and some great vegetarian options. I really enjoyed the hummus. I loved the Vegan Burrito, especially because it had plantains in it. And, there's just something about the *Veggie Quesadilla* that blew my mind. The drinks are good, too, and they have some nice beers on tap.

They have a vast menu, which is nice, and many vegan and vegetarian options. The food though is mediocre and bland, but decent. The main appeal is the diverse menu, and I really enjoyed the location and decor. The price is a bit much for the quality, but they also give fairly large portions. Overall a decent restaurant, but nothing great or special at all.

I've been meaning to review Chicora for months now. I have to make a trip every time I'm visiting friends in town, this usually being stop number two or three in my West End Bar Crawl. The Mile High Nachos are an absolute must. Scotty beat me to the punch on describing this masterpiece, so rather than repeat what has been stated, I must concur with everything he says. Scotty, you are dead on the money with the brisket! I've had it with the chicken as well, but nothing comes close to the brisket. This appetizer is a must try if it is your first visit. Just bring some friends to help you eat it all! I also have to push the Donkey Punch if you are trying to get your drink on. The cocktails and shots list is combined, so we thought it was a shot. The bartender told us that one will go a long way, and she was not kidding. On her suggestion, we ordered one donkey punch five ways, and we got five shot glasses filled to the brim... and man, it was tasty! Amaretto, Gran Marnier, Peach Schnapps, pineapple juice, and Redbull. It's pretty sweet, but it will get you going. It's a great deal so we always order another round, as soon as the first one is brought out... and the second... and the third, etc. Needless to say, we always have a blast at Chicora. Service has always been phenomenal, and I have yet to meet someone who hasn't had a good time. Chicora Alley is an absolute must if you're in Greenville for the weekend. Odds are you'll probably run in to my wild crew and get invited in on some Donkey Punches.

I love coming to Chicora Alley anytime I come to Greenville. The Tower Nachos are enormous and delicious. Six types of salsa, Mexican, Grape, Melon, Mango/cucumber, Pineapple/kiwi, & Bean & Corn cover each side of the tower and are all fantastic. Last time I added the Brisket and it brought the Tower to the next level. I would pretty much get anything with the brisket on it... unbelievably tender and exploding with flavor. A large order could have been enough for dinner for two and still had leftovers. Foolishly, we also got an order of the Mom's Cream Cheese Chicken Enchilada because we thought we would still be hungry. If you're getting this dish, you better love cheese. Great for me, because I bathe in cheese every morning and then brush my teeth with it before bed at night. This was almost too much cheesy goodness - I said ALMOST! If you aren't a cheese fanatic I could see how this dish could be a bit much. They always have a great craft beer selection and my service has been on point every time. I am a big fan and cant wait to get back to Greenville for some more nachos.

Traditionally I love Chicora Alley and often bring friends and work clients in for lunch or dinner. Tonight however was an unsatisfactory experience. We walked in and were greeted with a bouncer, which was new but ok, he marked our hand and then we asked to be seated. He said sit anywhere, so we found a table and sat. After being ignored for five minutes or so we asked if someone could wait on us. What followed was a scolding on how we needed to see the hostess to get a table, we explained the discussion with the bouncer and were told he was new (no apology offered) and that there were signs we should have seen. While the food did come out quickly and was as good as always the service left something to be desired. Very disappointing.

  • Rob J.

Wanted to give it average only in that it has been great in the past, but I was very disappointed. Pros: The waitress was good and the environment is always nice. Cons: Meal began with a list of all the beers they were out of. When I finally chose something, she ended up coming back to inform me they were out of it as well. Jerk chicken sandwich was served on a bun that could easily be found at a backyard cookout. The lettuce on my sandwich appeared to be from grocery store prechopped salad. My date had fish tacos with black beans and rice. Neither had any flavor until you doused them in hot sauce. CA has always been a great restaurant, but if I am going to drop $30 for the two of us to have lunch, I expect better quality. I hope this is a fluke and not a trend.

If you're looking for a laid back restaurant, open late, with a diverse menu, this is your place! They have a good selection of beer and everything I've tried on the menu has been good. There is also a music venue connected to the restaurant which has a variety of genres roll through.

  • Amanda P.

The roasted red pepper quesadilla with goat cheese and fried Mac and cheese appetizer are my favorites. Seriously good. I like to sit by the window to have a nice view if possible. Narrow stairs. Can get noisy at night but its not one of the more popular late night venues downtown. Also, my friend says amazing things about the mom's enchiladas if that's your jam.

I've never wrote a Yelp! review before tonight, that's how strongly I feel about this. Wow, was tonight miserable. This is the 3rd time I've been, and never had a good time. Tonight we stood for 4 minutes waiting to get seated, despite a number of the employees not being too terribly busy just a few feet away. Then we (myself and 2 friends) get our appetizer the guy who brought us our food didn't acknowledge us, he just slammed our food and plates down without saying anything. Then while one friend is in the restroom our food comes. We finish eating, and realize no one ordered the sweet potato fries. We tell our waiter when he brings the checks that we didn't order them. He says, "Sorry" then picks up the 25-30 minute old fries to the table next to us and says, "Sorry for the wait." To recap: employees that were inconsiderate, rude, and disgusting.

We always seem to go here when we can't decide where to eat down town. I've eaten at CA about ten times so there you go. Can get really crowded which slows down the service. Nachos are fab with all of the fruit salsas piled on it, wife always has a veggie something. Burgers are good too, but 9 bucks may be 2 bucks more than they are worth. Friends from out of town like it always since the menu is so varied, they always have a beer for 2 bucks or less and they have a good selection of brew on tap too. Cool funky place for lunch or dinner, good for children unless it is really crowded, young ones might get restless. Great location by Falls Park but out of the way door and stairs can be hard to find the first time.

I ate here for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon and it was great! The place was not crowded but it was starting to fill up when we left. One of the reasons we ate here was because of the menu, they have a lot of vegan/vegetarian which was great! I ordered a chicken taco, which was more like a wrap with a Mexican twist and the spicy ranch was AWESOME. The bar looked like it was well stocked and priced as well. I looked over several tables and their food looked awesome (especially the burgers). My friend ordered the nachos and tofu chili and it was great according to her. The staff was friendly and the music was not too loud although I'm sure it was going to get louder the later it got. The hardest part about this place was to find it! It is up some steps and there's two entrances so don't give up if you can't find it. It is worth it! Definitely a great location too right across the street from the falls.

Hmmm. This used to be our favorite spot in Greenville. Loved the Carribean fusion infused flavors. But today both our dishes were just OK. Looked the same but the flavors lacked the interesting complexity we always enjoyed. Actually my wife's fish tacos were awful-musty tasting. Sooo is this just an off day or?? We will try again and see. Used to always rate five stars.

Came for the weekend and dropped in here three times. (forgot to check in :( ) Great drinks. very comfortable bar. great meeting place for friends. had a quick app with cocktails before going out to dinner and just loved the place. Fun, bright and hip. Cool spot.

Food for all kinds but truly a great place for vegetarian and pescatarians alike. Great fresh ingredients that feature a southern caribbean fusion. Staff are a fun eccentric bunch who add as much spice to the environment as the jerk sauce does to the food

I tried Chicora Alley this weekend on the recommendation of a friend, and the dinner was really wonderful. I didn't encounter any of the issues that other reviewers have reported. Our group of three was seated without any wait for dinner on a Friday night. We started with nachos, spicy queso, and grape salsa, all of which were tasty. The sweetness of the grape salsa paired with the zip of the queso was a great combination. My friend, who prefers vegetarian dishes, said the Roasted Red Pepper quesadilla was her favorite entree, and the goat cheese made it outstanding. I tried the Beef & Greens quesadilla, which wasn't bad, but I wish I had taken the server's advice and replaced the curried collards with spinach. Both of my friends enjoyed their dishes very much. The "hidden" upstairs location and the view of Main Street's string-lit trees give Chicora Alley a cozy, secluded, and special feel. Our server was swift and helpful, giving us advice on meals and frequently returning to fill our drinks. The food seemed very fresh and genuine, relying on natural flavors instead of fried and fatty constitutions. To top it all off, the cost was surprisingly reasonable for a downtown restaurant, with many entrees priced at $10 or less. I wouldn't hesitate to eat here again!

Love this little gem tucked away upstairs on Main St. The atmosphere is right up my alley: laid back, fun, and a place I can pull up at the bar and order a good beer. The staff is really friendly...they may need to hire a few more people though because they do seem to be running around quite a bit and sometimes it was hard to get their attention. There is something on the menu for honestly everyone and it not, well I'm not sure what would make them happy then. The nachos are delicious as well as the tacos. This is the type of place that we'll be back to many times over the next two years we're in Greenville! I'm craving those nachos just thinking about them as I write!

We went there for dinner and to grab a couple of drinks. The service was extremely slow and we had to ask for the server to bring menus to the table--not a good first impression. We had a large group (7 peeps) and it was Monday night--so I will give them a little break. The food was descent. Nothing to write home about, but good. I had the jerk shrimp salad. The shrimp were very good, but the salad itself consisted of lettuce, melon salsa and jerk shrimp--nothing too special. All in all I was not overly impressed with Chicora Alley.

UPDATE: Some friends dragged me here again one weekend. The service was fine, our waiter was very friendly and helpful. But this was during lunch, so I still stand by my prior review. I'm just updating my rank because I guess the place isn't THAT bad, so long as you only come for lunch. ---- This place has broken my heart. Used to love it because it was one of the few places to get vegan fare in downtown Greenville, but the service on my past few visits has been horrid. For lunch time, the service is fine. But if you arrive in the evening, looking for food, you will pretty much be ignored by the staff. They are only interested in slinging drinks. I don't plan on coming back here for lunch or dinner. Service is just too unpredictable to be worth my time. Especially when I'm hungry.

After waiting to be seated for almost 20mins (while employees continually walked by and never even spoke to us) we finally sat ourselves. Waited another 15mins for a server to tell us he would be right by to get our order. After another 10mins I finally got up to get menus (kinda hard to order if you don't know why they serve). Finally got drinks but no straws, had to search myself for one behind the bar. Placed order after confirming menu item had no ingredients that I was allergic too. Food came but no silverware, yet again I had to go in search of things that should have been brought by server. Almost took a bite of my dinner when I noticed that there were 2 items in my dinner that I was allergic too (even though I confirmed with my moronic server beforehand). Informed server of the issue where he stated "we make all our food with those ingredients". So even though the menu made no mention of these ingredients AND I confirmed it before I ordered I was brought food that I was highly allergic too AND I was charged for it. With so many dinner/bar choices downtown you would think businesses would understand that customer service is key to keeping.......and in the case of Chicora Alley losing customers.

Good on the feng shui; not so much on the food. Chicora Alley's 'Caribbean Fusion' menu is big and just about everything on it seems appetizing (key word: seems). I like the concept, but the food didn't taste nearly as good as I had hoped. The first few bites of my roasted chicken burrito were okay but pretty soon the whole thing started falling apart due to the enormous amounts of liquid soaking into the tortilla. I ended up picking the chicken and red peppers out, which tasted fine, but I was really grossed out by the grainy plantain chunks hiding in there. After wrestling with the burrito for some time, I was left with an extremely soggy chicken pot pie-esque blob which was basically inedible. Side items were a bit of a letdown as well. I had never heard of fried mac 'n' cheese and thought it might be delish, but these over-breaded macaroni and cheese nuggets actually tasted like they came straight from Lunch Lady Land. I also love the idea of Granny Smith apple cole slaw but they went overboard with the mayo, and the cabbage shreds were way too long and stringy therefore making it very difficult to eat. My BBQ black beans were tasty and were definitely the best part of my meal (although probably doctored Progresso or the like). As with several other places I've visited only once, I would like to go back to Chicora Alley to try something else on the menu or maybe just enjoy a beer and some chips & salsa. The bar area looks neat and there is also a small patio out back. I'm sure the scene is hopping on certain nights of the week.

Awesome menu and great, consistent food!! A lot of delicious options to choose from. My favorite is the roasted red pepper / goat cheese quesadilla - to die for! The service is friendly although it may not be the quickest I've ever experienced, however, the food definitely makes up for it!! Check out the back entrance to avoid those steep stairs that seem to prove too much for some of the fellow reviewers.

I like Chicora Alley. The Chicora Burger is great, and the sweet potato fries are amazing. I've had one not so great experience, but I'm pretty sure that it was a fluke.

Besides having a great Jamaican/Southwestern fusion menu (MAKE SURE TO GET THE SWEET POTATO FRIES) this is a great place to hang out as well. In Greenville's West End district Chicora Alley is a great place to have a good lunch or dinner, but also a great after hours place on weekends. Packed with a young professional and generally diverse crowd, it is a fun place to run into friends. Draw backs are that it is now so crowded some nights it will take you awhile to get a drink, and it tends to be pretty loud. Smoking is allowed only on the deck out back keeping it easy to breathe inside.
