the pizza is pretty good, and you can order by the slice so that's a plus. the blue cheese burger is good too. the guys in the kitchen are great! they have a ton of beers and the staff is knowledgable...which is maybe why they're all jerks. the service here is consistently horrible. this is probably due to the fact that my friends and i are early-20s. we all serve tables and are polite enough to not let stereotypes influence our behavior while on the floor. unfortunately for barley's, bad service trumps decent food.

Such a great place for a Belgian beer and friends. And actually some of the best pizza in the Upstate. Love Barley's

A great place for pizza, calzones, salads, sandwitches with over 50 plus beers to select from. Roughly about 35 plus beers on tap, mostly microbrews. The upstairs has pool tables, darts and few other things but eating is prohibited. The upstairs also has beers on tap. Lots of fun if you're into that sort of thing. Family friendly and the service is typically great.

Best tap beer selection I had in downtown Greenville. Service is a little on the slow side and you probably don't want to piss off the red head. The food is a monster carb load and I'd recommend waiting until the very, very end of the night if you want to fill up on bread and bloat. Overall a good place to have a couple beer flights and get a feel for South East Brew.

fun atmosphere and lots of beer options, they let you sample so even non beer snobs will have a chance to find something they like

Best Pizza in Greenville... and around for that matter!!! Everything from the dough to the cheese to the toppings SCREAMS freshness and quality. If you're looking for great pizza and an awesome selection of craft beer this is the spot. The dining area is reminiscent of a German atmosphere, it's open and filled with long tables, good for large groups, but I would recommend calling ahead so they can try and make room for you. Also be sure to check out the Trappe Door below and the Pool Hall above, both with their own selection of great environments.

Hey! What's up? Barley's is kewl. They are the craft brew OG of Greenville, so give them the props! Still the best place in town for air conditioning, snacks, AND getting tapped! They also have some of the best service pros in town: JP, Zach, Kimmy, Callie & Christian are the bomb diggity, but they don't suffer fools lightly. Tip #1. Sit at the bar for best service. Just don't be an ass. Consolidate empties and make room for others. Sit at the bar upstairs if you aren't eating. Tip #2. Avoid family fun time 5-7 when crackers let their kittens run wild. Thank you I know.

Disappointing at best. Attended with a large group of friends that meets regularly. We had the entire upstairs, which has several pool tables (fun) but not a lot of seating (not good for a large party). Our group organizers worked something out to where each person attending (I believe there were around 40) would pay $18 and have a buffet, and the group organizers wanted to take care of the gratuity. While trying to pay my $18 the bartender informed me that there is a 18% gratuity for each person, so all 40-50 of us needed to pay our organizer b/c "The 18% gratuity is just too much for us to keep up with". Oh really? So you want ONE person, who just did you a huge favor by bringing you 40-50 people on an otherwise slow weekday evening, who's already volunteered to pay you the 18% gratuity for the entire party, so handle this? Instead of you, with your register, and the ability to make change/charge credit cards? Lazy. Lazy. Lazy. To top it all off, the food came out slowly and wasn't enough for the group. So I had a slice and a half of pizza, with no table service (just the one bartender, no servers for such a large party or even anyone available to deliver waters), for $18. Oh, and then two more pizza's arrive at almost 10pm. No thank you. I detest leaving bad reviews, and do so infrequently. Hoping that an owner/proper manager sees this and rectifies the way groups are handled.

I stopped in here on a visit to Greenville and had a few beers but did not try any food. On my second beer, I thought I would try the local stuff and found Quest Golden Fleece and my co worker tried Ellida IPA. I can not remember the last time I could not finish a beer but both of us took a long drag and looked at each other and pushed it aside. When the server returned we told her we did not like the beer and she made no offer to refund or replace the beer. You select it you buy it, I guess. I asked for the tab and we proceeded to another beer establishment.

What's to hate? What's to love? The beer selection is nice. The pizza prices are a bit heavy on the pocket book. Almost $30 for a big pie. For a college town too. That's quite a statement. The service is superb. They're all nice. Chatter birds actually. The upstairs is quite a different scene. The one bartender is NOT a chatter bird. In fact, you may feel uncomfortable just asking about the beers. Is there a list? It's easier to just read the wall he says. Of course it is. Not a bad experience. Not a great experience. But good if you make before 6 for hh. Cheers.

We met some friends here during our last visit to Greenville. Pizza and amazing craft beer? Yes please! My friends picked the perfect place. Pretty good beer selection downstairs but the secret is you need to go upstairs to get the really good stuff (they don't sell what is upstairs to you downstairs). The upstairs bar was closing early for the night for a private party but luckily we were able to try some of the upstairs beers before they closed - including some really hard to get beers! Beertender upstairs was pretty cool too. He gave me tips for bottle trading in case I come back into town. Definitely will revisit this joint.

Good pizza, horrible garlic knots. We ordered the Meats pizza with 12 garlic knots (way to many for 3 people lol). The beer selection was great and the beers came out fast. The knots were the worst ones I have had. They lacked anything that resembled a garlic butter flavor. I would more relate them to a roll with some unmelted cheese sprinkled on the top, served with marinara dipping sauce. They were over crispy (to crispy for garlic knots) almost like consistency of pizza crust. Luckily this was not the only thing we ordered. The pizza took longer than anticipated for a lunch time fare. But when it arrived it was worth the wait. The crust was crispy and the balance of toppings were just right. The cheese stuck to the pizza and it was a joy to eat. The crust was bland and could have used some seasoning. I just left the crust on the plate. The peppercorn ranch was really good on the pizza. The staff seemed busy, which is to be expected on busy downtown day. No one carried a smile on their face, which was disappointing. Everyone looked annoyed. Not truly enjoyable experience. But the pizza was good!

Wow! Anybody that knows barleys in spindale, you know they have a great beer selection. But it pales in comparison to the beer selection here. I have learned that each barley is owned by different people and there are many similarities and many differences. The decor is similar and the pizza looks just as amazing here along with the garlic knots, but there are a few menu items here that are not at spindale. My wife is having the voodoo pasta. Which is in spindale and I'm having the pasta bolenese which is not. Both are very tasty. The restaurant is off Main Street so it doesn't get as busy in the day but this place cranks at night.

The service wasn't great, but the food was incredible. Wow. We got a calzone (which was massive) and a blackened tofu focaccia sandwich. It was awesome. The blackened tofu focaccia sandwich was unlike anything I had tasted before and it was seriously incredible. We would definitely go back. Pricing was good, too. Both items were about $8 each.

HUGE beer selection!!! Tasting privileges & knowledgeable servers if you need help deciding. I enjoyed the artichoke dip & the guacamole & pineapple salsa appetizers & then a yummy calzone. Lots of seating & clearly a Greenville fav.

Well, the outdoor tables may leave something to be desired, but our final impression of Barley's was overwhelmingly positive. They have a great beer selection, and plenty of pizzas for every taste. We ordered the 14" Caribbean Jerk Pizza, which was perfect for two people to share. While not as spicy as the name implies, the flavor was there. It made for a great (albeit expensive at $21 for the small size) lunch. The outside table we sat at was extremely lopsided for some reason, and when our pizza was on one of those stand things, we almost lost it because of the slope. But since there was only two of us, there was enough room to lay the pizza flat on the table. They might want to rethink those tables.

  • Christopher E.

The beer menu is larger than the food menu by a long shot... and that's not a bad thing. The pizza and calzones are very good.

  • Marlowe W.

We went for lunch today and there were only 3 other groups there, so I thought we might have good service. Wrong! Our server took her sweet time taking our orders, then the food took forever to come out. Most of us got the special: one slice and a salad. I have no idea what took them so long in the kitchen, because there were seriously only about 10 other customers in the restaurant. She finally came around to bring our checks, and by the time we left we had been there for 1 hour and 30 minutes. That is insane. The food was tasty but geez- not a good experience overall.

Was there last Sunday night before closing. Beer service up stairs was okay. Ordered a pizza and went down stairs as a group to all grab a slice and eat real quick. Was approached by a manager/server will some attitude. Apparently we were eating in an area that, had been "cleaned". Instead of offering another area to eat real quick, we were told they were closing, even though there were people still seated eating. We ended up standing out front eating their pizza we paid for while they were still open. Little moody staff spoiled an enjoyable evening of beer and pool. The Asheville location on the other hand is a lot more accommodating and friendly.

Stopped by on a Saturday night. Many places up town were full but we were able to get a table at Barleys. I had a meat lovers pizza and it was great. It was hot with a delicious crust. They also have a good selection of beer. They have a good menu so I'll definitely go back.

  • Cole D.

Plenty of items on menu! All good! Got the pulled pork sand. W/ provolone cheese, greens, tomatoes, and the blue cheese cole slaw on the side. Loved it! It did take an hour to come (we had 22 people so I cut them some slack) but it was worth it!

  • Monica R.

Made it right before last call for the kitchen. I hate doing that to them but we were so hungry and had an hour and a half drive back to Columbia after watching Book of Mormon at the peace center. We ordered sandwiches as they are quick and easy. For a sandwich that took less than 10 minutes to make, the Philly cheesesteak was awesome! Would like to try their pizza next time. Service was ok, all the employees looked tired and annoyed but it didn't really affect our service or food.

  • Caryn F.

Will NEVER go here again. Manager was ridiculously rude because our friend from out of state was still waiting on his new ID and only had a paper version with his expired ID and they told him to leave. Keep in mind he is 28 years old!!!! There was also supposed to be a free event going on at the upstairs bar that would include free pizza yet when we came upstairs with the pizza we ordered downstairs, they KICKED us out?? What restaurant kicks you out for eating their own pizza????!!!

    (1)
  • Cary A.

I a big fan of their beer selection, which encompasses the entire universe of beer pretty thoroughly. If you can't find a beer you like here, then good luck. The food is great with the Italian Sub coming in as one of the best in downtown. Their pizza is on par with Mellow Mushroom however, so are the elevated price points. This place has a great location right on E. Washington street with outdoor dining on the sidewalk and plenty of space inside at tables, or one of two bars. I definitely like eating here a little earlier in the evening, usually serves as the starting location for a night out. Enjoy!

  • Patrick W.

Everyone speaks of the beer. I'm not a beer drinker. The food has always been superb every time I have ate here and the employees at the establishment have been top notch. One thing that keeps me coming back are the calzones. They are incredible and the best in Greenville!

  • Matt R.

Saw this place on yelp and thought with all the taps had to check it out. Unfortunately I didn't really find the tap selection all that impressive. Possibly because I am partial to Belgian triples and golden ales and wheat beers and they didn't have that many. Service at the bar was not that welcoming and the pizza slice of bacon pineapple recommended by the bartender seemed like it was heated in a microwave. Really went in trying to like this place but disappointed in all fronts.

Barley's is one of my favorite spots in town. I love the black bean hummus and they have my fave beer, Golden Monkey, on tap.

I don't know what the problem was but our food tool forever. The kitchen was so far behind that people were walking out. The food and drinks were fine and the waitress was doing her best but lunch took 90 minutes!

    (3)
  • Tim G.

Good beer selection but terrible pizza. Our pizza came out looking like it was heated by a blow dryer - cheese barely melted and still very "doughy". I didn't see the $20+ value in this pizza. The waiter didn't seem very happy to be working on a Friday night, but who is. I'll probably be back anyway since I like beer.

  • brice b.

I'm back and in huge favor of Barleys. New menu is great and the pizza crust has improved greatly. The service as alway seems hot and cold but I do love the place. I think the best thing that could happen to get it to the next level is for the owner to actually be here :)

  • Tamaria W.

Pizza crust was nice and crunchy...the slices are HUGE. I got 2, but couldn't eat both. Pretty crowded for a Saturday afternoon...glad I stopped in.

Good bar food! I recommend the pizza. A little too much of a bar atmposhere for client lunches, but good for a Friday lunch with colleagues.

Service: It was not the greatest, waitress wasn't that friendly she was just there to get her job done. She was eating during her shift and on her phone as well as her coworkers. 2 stars Atmosphere: Nice atmosphere, great selection of beers on hand. Had a tavern type feel to it with an Italian menu. 4 stars Food: I had a Caesar salad which was your typical salad but the lettuce was dry and the dressing came in a container which wasn't classy in my opinion. I also had a 14" meatlover pizza which was very good. It was fresh and made to order crust was thin and crunchy and they gave me a nice portion of toppings on my pizza including beefalo. 3 stars Overall: I do not see how this restaurant got 4 stars with the service being that bad. This would be a great place if your looking to grab some beers with your friends, but as far as dining I do not see myself coming back here. Overall:

    1) When I'm looking for a good place to eat, my primary concern, counterintuitively, is the beer list. This place has a phenomenal selection of rotating taps featuring local, regional, and national brews. A+ 2) The food is also very good. I had the spicy focaccia chicken sandwich, which had a nice balance of flavors, with the blue cheese slaw as a side. I have a love-hate relationship with cole slaw. Good slaw can be excellent, but bad slaw is terrible. The slaw at Barley's is excellent. If you put beer first, Barley's is an easy 5 stars, but the food backs that up.

Great Pizza, Great Beer, Great atmosphere! My husband and I love to eat here. The perfect stop for dinner while exploring downtown!

Great pizza and awesome beer selection. I'm vegan and there are a ton of options. I got the soy cheese pizza with jerk tofu, tasty!

Atmosphere is nice and the waitstaff was good. The pizza I ordered arrived at my table and was more warm than hot. It tasted passable but I wasnt overly impressed. My friend had a pasta dish and enjoyed it.

This place use to be good along time ago. But I have given this restaurant many recent visits and to sum it up warm beer and cold calzone Blue cheese 10 dollar salad came with sparse greens, with tiny bit of blue cheese. The waitress had to bring a small side of it. The prosciutto was horrible, salad gone wrong. Calzone looked great, how disappointing the ricotta cheese was cold inside. The beer is served not so cold, what has happened to this place?? Prices have gone up and food prep has gone down. I will never return and absolutely do not recommend. Went to another restaurant!!

  • Tara G.

First things first: I'm only giving Barley's four stars because it's my go-to beer haven. I would *not not not* give the food here 4 stars. I would give it maybe 3, but more likely 2.5. It's all just bland, and I've tried a couple of their pizzas (cheese and one of the specialties) as well as the garlic knots and artichoke dip. I have no idea who is voting this the best pizza in Greenville, but even in a city that has far too many crappy pizza places, this is pretty far down the chain of places I'd choose to go for pizza. But the beer, y'all. THE BEER. I've been to a lot of places in Greenville that boast good beer selections, but you'll never find one as good as Barley's. The employees...well. Lately (like in the past year or so) I've been really pleased with the friendliness of the bartenders, but then I know plenty about beer and am usually just ordering outright or maybe asking for a suggestion based on something I've already tried. Previously I'd met with some pretty rude bartenders here, but hey, there's a reason they're the 'most arrogant bar' in the US or whatever ;)

I've been to hundreds of bars between Chicago, Jersey, Cleveland, and my global travels and this place is terrible. Place had below average service and food and smells like puke sometimes. I love dive bars but the smell is just a turn off. Maybe I came on a bad night but food and service were not so great. I rather goto Barley's or Universal joint. Still searching for a legit sports bar in this town. Missing Chicago for that sole reason. Greenville rocks otherwise.

  • Mike R.

Let me preface this. This place has good beer and decent food, but the food is downstairs and beer is upstairs. I brought an excellent beer from upstairs to the dining room downstairs. The beer went empty, and I ordered another, yet was told by multiple servers that that was not possible without having to LEAVE MY DINNER with my people and GO BACK UPSTAIRS BY MYSELF to WAIT IN LINE and ORDER A BEER. You have got to be f***ing kidding me! Good beer but won't get my drink. Absolutely, positively unacceptable. There is no excuse for this bad service, even if it is the owner's fault, which all my friends agree with. So do not go here if you want good beer with decent food. Only go here if you either want crap beer with ok food, or great beer with no food.

  • Richard R.

Awesome place for Pizza!!! I'm a native Chicagoan and can be a bit of a pizza snob... but this is some of the best pizza I've found outside of Chicago. We enjoyed the outdoor seating during our visit and had a large half cheese / half sausage and pepperoni pizza that filled me, my wife, two young boys and grandma too!!! Met some fantastic people here at the tables next to ours that made it really feel like an old school hang-out joint for friends. Looking forward to our next visit to Greenville and to Barley's for some more great pizza.

  • T R.

Slice of pizza with onions - good flavor, thin crust, grease-free. Side salad - spinach, tomatoes, onions, peppers, and mushrooms. Fresh. Smithwick's Irish Ale. Many craft beers on tap. One negative - the men's room needed attention.

  • Eric B.

Waitstaff good, knowledgeable. Great beer selection, pizza is alright. Manager is an insufferable prick.

I was in Greenville on business and continued my never ending quest for interesting beer joints. Four stars on Yelp Brought me to the door of Barley's. First impressions were great. 72 taps of nice choices. My second impression was even better as my bartender was Kendall and she was excellent. Cute, competent, and a great conversationalist makes for one great bartender! Much has been said about the pizza. I was telling Kendall I was going to pass on it as it was just too much food for one person. A fellow patron overheard my comments and graciously offered me two slices of his! He had ordered the 14" Meat eater version. It goes for $19.50 and was delicious. One of the toppings was beefalo which was a nice touch. Great pizza, great beer and great service. Four stars!

Consistently good food and friendly service for years, huge yummy beer selection. What's not to like ? I don't give out 5 stars lightly but Barleys deserves it. Been going here for at least 10 years w the family.

  • R S.

It's a good place for a group. Plenty of open space. Pizza is decent. Have had multiple experiences of poor service from the waitstaff. Get the feeling they are just punching the clock.

    (2)
  • Jill B.

I would give Barleys 5 stars if they were consistent. When their game is on, they are GAME ON! A couple of those perfect little bubbles on the end let me know the crust is spot on. No bubbles ( which you get there from time to time) means too dense. My only other complaint is the lack of decent wine. Decent wines can be inexpensive and will not compete with the fine selection of beers.

    (4)
  • John C.

Had the pizza this time and raised the score - but the beer is the real star - still 5 stars for the beer!

    (4)
  • Aimee B.

Huge selection of beers both on tap and bottled, and a reserve list as well. Amazing hefe-Weiss if you like wheat beer (Weihenstephan). Tons of unique toppings for pizza like green chili, beefalo, jerk tofu, green olives, and a ton more. You can choose from their pizzas or make your own. They also have a ton of sandwiches and wraps. They tend to stay pretty busy, but we've never had to wait long. The servers are hit or miss, but tend to be on the good side...typically.the place is a darker tavern look, but it feels rustic and homey. If you've never had it, stop being ridiculous and try it. It's really quite good.

First of all, this review must be divided into 2 sections: food and drink. Food- I would actually not give 4 stars if that we're the only thing to consider. We started with the garlic knots, which left much to be desired. They were dry and rather flavorless. They required a lot of condiments to try to enjoy, so I gave up very soon in that endeavor and decided to use my allotted calories on the main dish: the calzone. Our waiter boasted the calzone as one of the best. It was okay. Not much to be excited about... Pretty run of the mill as far as I'm concerned. Now for the better news. The 4- star news. The exciting portion of the evening. The BEER!!!! So many options! So many ways to enjoy a frosty beverage! I enjoyed that I could tell the waiter my beer preferences and he gave some very viable options to meet the mark. The mark was "son of a peach" and must say it was delightful! I will definitely be looking for it to enjoy on a more regular basis! So crisp and delish!

    (4)
  • Carmen T.

Beer list is ridic!!! I don't do well with too many choices, but excited to try the seasonal options. I passed on the pizza, however, the Black bean hummus was tasty and the wait wasn't long considering it was a Friday night.

still the best value and bang for you buck for lunch in downtown Greenville under 6 bucks for two huge I mean really huge hang over your plate slices of ny style pizza for under 7 dollars during the week includes your soft drink or tea and if ya like beer if they don't have it you don't need it but I mainly go for the pizza mmmmm mmmm good

I gave Barley's a try at the suggestion of my friend Richard R. I figured he would have a good opinion on pizza since he is a Chi-Town native. My guess was accurate, the man knows his pizza. We ordered an extra large Pepperoni and Sausage pizza. The crust was very good, the cheese tasted good and the pepperoni tasted good. Honestly, I was not wild about the sausage as it was the type that is cut in a sort of disk shape like a slightly thicker pepperoni. Next time I will replace it with another topping. The pizza was really good and the place has a pretty cool atmosphere. I did not drink any beer but I did see a ton of taps for draft beer. The only thing I did not like were the garlic knots that we ordered. Those were pitiful actully, so save your money and do not order them. However, the pizza made up for it. I can definitely see myself coming back to this joint whenever I am in Greenville again. I give this place a thumbs up and suggest you give it a try. For people 40+, they have a pretty cool little juke box with CD's from the 50's, 60's and 70's as well. That did not appeal very well to my 7 year old or my younger wife but I would have enjoyed some of the music selection had I been there with friends or something. The service, although the waiter was not very friendly, was still pretty solid service. Although I was not impressed enough to give it that coveted 5 star rating, I can definitely see myself coming back to this joint whenever I am in Greenville again. I give this place a thumbs up and suggest you give it a try.

Simply put: the best of the best. The beer selection is unrivaled in the upstate, and the sourdough-based pizza is 2 legit 2 quit. With its friendly & quirky staff, the pool tables and jukeboxes, I don't see how it could get much better. This is my favorite place in G'ville, bar none. BTW my pals and I have developed a "bootleg" pizza menu, so feel free to order the following options: 1) The Super Mario - Italian sausage, portabella mushrooms, fresh basil 2) The Count Dracula - pepperoni, garlic, red onions 3) The Home Runs - bacon, jalapeno peppers, diced tomatoes

  • Kirk W.

I like barleys, its not great its not bad but the bartenders dont need to be snobs. I also just paid $7 for a stone IPA. A Stone IPA!? and the bartender ignored us upstairs, the place was empty except for his freind so he ignored us. I think his jeans were too tight but regardless its not a destination. its a place to go when others are full.

  • J S.

We were very disappointed with Barley's pizza. It was very bland and not worth the money (even tho it was cheap). Although the beer selection is very impressive, we will not be returning. We felt that Barley's wasn't worth the the trip.

  • C S.

Pizza was okay. Too much of a sourdough taste. Calzone was better. Cool atmosphere, nice building and location. I prefer Tony's or Vic's pizza in Greenville.

    (4)
  • Christine B.

Missed out on the pizza that everyone is talking about, but tried a few local beers. The upstairs is a really nice spot to hang out with a big group. We played pool and darts and got to hang out. The bartender seemed a little annoyed with us, but we ordered a fair amount of beer and we definitely weren't out of control, so not sure what his deal was.

  • Cory M.

This is the spot to go to if you love beer and you truly enjoy trying and finding new beers. Probably the best selection I have encountered in the Greenville area so far. Not only do they have a phenomenal tap selection they also have a quite extensive aged and specialty bottled collection that reads more like a wine list with each beer having a year bottled and a description of characteristics not to mention most of these bottles have a much higher price tag you would normally find on any beer, but for a beer lover like myself it is well worth it. Great atmosphere and friendly staff. O yea and the pizza is pretty damn good as well!

    (5)
  • Nate L.

39 Beers on tap! I could stop there but the Pizza was a great meal. I ordered just a slice and it filled me up. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is for the service, it was about 4-star quality so still not bad. Highly recommended. I will definitely go back the next 38 times I'm in Greenville. BTW, I had the Quest Ellida IPA, a local Greenville brew, and it was a solid IPA.

    (4)
  • Stephanie H.

Definitely a fan. The beer list? Something to call home about, for sure. I love trying new beers, so this is a great place to go if you like beer. The pizza is good, but the best thing I ate there was the black bean hummus. Loved it! The upstairs bar is good for big groups with pool and darts and the like. Also, the kitchen is open later than most restaurants in Greenville, so if you're hungry at midnight, it may be the only place you can get food.

  • Elizabeth R.

You locals are so lucky to have this place. I just loved it. A trend that I'm seeing among pizza snobs reviewing this place is that I'm not alone. (I'm from Philly and tend to prefer NY-style pizza.) A pizza joint that offers dairy free cheese is brilliant- my poor lactose intolerant, but pizza loving in-laws would be so happy to find this place- not to mention my vegan friends. Anyway, I got two slices, one with jerk tofu crumbles, and another with olives. The jerk tofu went really well with pizza, actually. And the crumbles didn't overwhelm the sauce/cheese. I enjoyed my pizza so much that I had to get a jerk tofu sandwich to go. This was my first real experience with jerk flavoring, and I loved it. The problem was "to go" meant "to take on the plane" for me, and not only did I make a mess toting this sandwich through security (looked like a biohazard if you ask me), I probably annoyed half the plane by eating it on a wee little aircraft- the smell of that thing wafted. Embarrassed to be the moron on the plane, I scarfed it down like I'd stolen it. Thankfully for me, I didn't have anyone else sharing my cluster of plane seats. They'd have killed me and used me to make jerk tofu. Anyway, it was spicy-sweet and really worth a try- especially, I'd argue, if you think you don't like tofu! I had one of the local on-tap beers here too, and it was awesome. If I lived anywhere near here I'd be here all the time, feasting on calorie laden American pub food with a hippie twist.

What a piece of **** never got to order food because my wife Lisa got carded. Server and manager said it was South Carolina state law. Since Lisa didnt drive and had no ID, we promptly left and went around the corner. Had a wonderful meal at a table 301 place. It included delicious drinks.. This place s&*ks!

Best pizza in Greenville. Next to Papa Johns. ...kidding, thank god. DAMN good beer list. Very impressive. Service was not superb, but it was Sunday and Artisphere. Even still, it honestly wasn't that busy.

Loud, crazy, fun place for happy hour drinks. The place was slammed the other night so it took over an hour to get the pizzas we had ordered. In addition the pizza order was messed up, but to their credit, they gave us another large pizza free of charge, apologized to everyone, and made it right. Fun place!

Barley's is a mini chain? I never knew: so good job, Barley's. A friend who lives in Greenville first took me to Barley's and I stop by there now whenever I find myself in town. Likes: Solid pizza, fun atmosphere, tons of beers on draft. Dislikes: I've been there when it's pretty crowded. And as with everywhere in Greenville, you cant always find free parking nearby and may have to walk a bit. Take it or leave it: Take it. Solid pizza, fun place.

Been going here for years. Love the pizza! Staff isn't super nice but the beer selection makes up for it.

I've actually eaten here a couple of times now. The first time was a disaster...the waiter completely ignored us, even though the place was only 1/3 full (we could see him hiding in the backroom) and we ended up having to ask the hostess for drink and water refills. Well, we haven't seen that waiter there again, and all our other experiences have been good. Their sandwiches...meh, I've had better...but I really, REALLY like their pizza! It's not my favorite style of pizza (which is New York style thin), but the crust and sauce are flavorful, and they have a good selection of toppings. So far, my favorite pizza in Greenville.

Came in for a late lunch and my friend wanted to sample some of their beers. We both ordered a slice of pizza and beer. The pizza came and wasn't good, tasted stale and didn't look very appetizing. I then looked back into the kitchen and saw a large mound of pizza slices that had been made for the lunch crowd we had just missed. So, let's get this straight, they pre make the pizza for people that order pizza by the slice, add whatever topping they want and put it back in the oven. WTF???? This was appalling, all the employees in the kitchen were milling around the pre cut pizza, it wasn't covered either, right out in the open, yuk!!!!!!! I asked the waitress and she said they do that to help speed business through when their busy. Well this was about 3pm and they weren't busy, so the slices had been sitting there since before noon. My friend said their pizza is normally good, so I gave them another chance by ordering a whole pizza, which the waitress assured me would be made fresh. What a difference! The pizza was good and worth the wait. My advise, don't order a slice! The whole pizza is worth the extra wait and cooking time.

Amazing beer selection. Food was on the average side but well priced. The waitress was pretty bad. If I'm in town I will come back for the beer selection.

I finally had some booze in South Carolina. It took a good three weeks, but Barley's was definitely a solid choice, especially since I enjoy trying a lot of new things. I am not the person to walk into a bar and order a Bud, even if it is something like $1. Normally, a joint like this would earn my complete devotion, but the food just could not hold up to the amazing beer selection. I could not believe that a place in South Carolina serves such a wide selection of beer, but then again, I have been in Pickens...not Greenville. Seeing the amount of North Carolina and South Carolina beers totally made my night... (fuzzy). There is no point in going over the numerous beers that I tried--they allow you to try 6 at a time in sampler sizes. Great option! Now the food... I went with a bunch of the snack offerings for the table, and none of them were appetizing. Now, you know the food is not terribly spectacular when you are slightly inebriated and the food still tastes reminiscent of cardboard. Sure, I am a food snob, but I know what bad food is if I cannot enjoy it when I have had a few brewskis down the hatch. The garlic knots were simply balls of dough. No garlic, and the marinara sauce tasted of canned tomatoes, without seasoning, of course. The black bean hummus lacked any sort of flavor. The chili was a steal at $3 for a very large serving, but it was lukewarm, too tomatoey, and way too bean-heavy. Not a good complement to beer. If you are craving an awesome beer selection and do not mind a wait, Barley's is a great choice. Just do not expect much out of the food. I waited all week to have a real meal after eating elementary school cafeteria food for 1 week, and I was not pleased with the grub. Beer, beer, beer: that is the key.

I've found my home very far away from home. Barley's has a beer selection to rival some of Atlanta's Taco Mac locations, and their bartenders know everything about everything. Top it off with the best pizza in SC and you've got a definite winner. As you will read, you can get almost every beer in the world here. Ok, so at least it kinda feels like it when you walk in. If you're a true beer snob (yours truly) you may have trouble finding your niche favorites, but The Trappe Door is right downstairs for the Belgian lovers. Barley's hosts a wonderful selection of American craft brews that have made names for themselves and worked their way onto distribution lists - Left Hand, New Belgium, Highland, Victory, Rogue, Sweetwater, Terrapin, you get the point. You'll find a smattering of European beers as well. And be sure to check the upstairs bar if you can't find what you're looking for in the main dining room. I've been here with large groups - 10-15 people - as well as just coming to the bar for a beer, and we had no issues with wait times (group dinners have been Thursday nights, ~15min wait) or service. Bartenders are very attentive, especially given the number of stools and size of the bar, which I've never seen even close to empty. Their website hasn't been updated since 2009, so don't go there looking for the most recent arrivals on tap. I'm guessing the food menu is essentially the same, but you'll need to show up in person or give them a call to find out if your favorite beer has arrived yet. As for food, the pizza is excellent. I haven't tried anything else because "taproom & pizzeria" translates to "if you want something besides beer and pizza go somewhere else". Not like they didn't warn you. As a recovering vegetarian I had a pizza with half meat lovers and half loaded with veggies, and both were delightful. I can't wait to go back and try something different. I think a calzone may be in order on Thursday...

Went there following a walk in Greenville. Have been here before and service continues to slide. Have had corporate events there and know how it has been in the past, yet fails to live up to past reputation. Bar service is poor at best. If you are a regular, you might get recognized and served. Don't mind asking for a beer list, this is your place. No meet or greet, no suggestions, no appreciation for the business. Was walked right past several times as were others. If your bartender does not recognize the empty glass do not expect the other (male) to assist. Never was offered food or a food menu. If you want something better be prepared to ask for it.... and Wait. Great beer list and selection, service is just POOR. Food was good in the past, not even offered a menu tonight, ate elsewhere........

This place has a HUGE beer selection...probably one of the biggest ones I've seen. I ordered the purple haze for a beer and it was nice and light. The appetizer w had was the artichoke ale which came with bread and that was just ok. The artichoke flavor was lost within the bread so that is why I usually like the chips with the artichoke dip. Other than that the artichoke flavor was light so it really did get lost within the bread. For the main course I ordered the jerk tofu sandwich. OMG the jerk tofu was sooooooo good! The tofu was so smooth, soft and rich and tasted fresh. The spicy brown mustard sauce with mayo and ketchup just added the perfect flavor. I wish this place was in Chicago! I also tried my friends blackbean tofu sandwich which was also good but not as good as the jerk tofu sandwich. The service was pretty slow but then again this place was packed for being a Tuesday. I would definitely come back!

I've been to Barley's a few times and I'll keep going back. The pizza is fantastic - where else can you get Beefalo as a topping? The tipping point for me is how knowledgeable everyone is about the beer. The bartenders and servers are supremely knowledgeable as well as friendly. The upstairs bar has a different beer selection than the downstairs bar, so make your way to both for the best variety.

If you like beer and pizza, this is the place for you. The food is great and you can order beer samples to taste every single beer they have ... as long as you have a dedicated driver :) I had a Meat Eater Pizza and was pretty much stuffed after it. Overall our group had 5 different pizzas and everybody was happy.

I'm not a beer person, but I can tell you that the selection was wide and varied and the rest of my party appreciated that, especially the sampler sets. Even though they didn't have time to actually have much beer, they would have if they could have! The food was fantastic. The pizza had many, many different options for ordering (whole pizza, specialty, slice, different topping options, whole wheat dough, etc.) which made it easy for each of us to find exactly what we wanted. You can order by the slice and pay for extra toppings, order a whole pizza (medium or large) with just the basics and add toppings, or order a whole specialty pizza. The whole pizza comes with about 9 large slices. The toppings are incredibly cool and diverse, from the normal mushrooms and pepperoni to the interesting jerk chicken/tofu and artichoke. I ordered a Caribbean chicken, which came with olive oil, artichoke, jerk chicken, onion, and mozzarella. It was so much that I was easily able to take most of it away as leftovers and eat for another three meals. And that was just a medium! It made the price well worth it. They even offered me a choice between a pizza box and aluminum foil to take my pizza to go. The menu was also extensive in other areas, such as appetizers (the artichoke dip immediately drew my attention) and sandwiches. Another person in my party ordered a jerk tofu sandwich, which they gladly wrapped for her to go and smelled delicious the whole way back to the hotel. The atmosphere was warm and friendly, and seemed like a great place for families and to hang out. Our server conversed and joked with us and put us - all people from out of the state/region - at ease. There were many TVs spread out around the restaurant so we could watch the football game too. Definitely a place I would go back to the next time I'm in Greenville!

If you love beer and pizza this is your Mecca. The beer selection is HUGE and the ones on tap (60+) change often. I love IPA and there are always a ton of choices. I suggest the Andouille sausage and jalapeño pie. The place is also very kid friendly for lunch but is more for adults (read BAR) in the evening. This is a popular lunch spot for the downtown work crowd. There are many lunch specials for a couple of slices and a soda, etc. Also, this place is beer only with no liquor.

Barley's has a great drink selection and the pizza is fantastic. Some of the biggest slices I've had around Greenville. Very moderately priced, especially for lunch. Love it.

I entered this fine establishment accompanied by a party of 14 thirsty no-necks which is normally a sure-fire recipe for disaster but Barley's wasn't phased. Our gender bent waiter (who looked just like Carrot Top) consistently kept our mugs full and our food arrived without an issue. Barley's has a huge selection of outstanding beer on tap. Their beer list reflects some of the finest micro-brewed selections available across the U.S., Canada and Europe. The food was standard, but good pub fare and pizza. Another nice feature of Barley's is the "flight of six" tasters you can order representing different categories of beer. If you find yourself in Greenville for an evening and you're a beer lover you couldn't do much better than Barley's.

My wife and I decided to take a random trip to South Carolina one day. I wanted pizza and saw this place had really good reviews so I had to go. We went and it was so cold in the place we couldn't take our coats off. Pizza was good.At first I thought it was lacking flavor but I was wrong. I actually had to let it cool down a lot and then the flavors really come out. Would reccomend trying this place out.

    (4)

The flight of tasters is amazing! You get 6 and they are all half pints (or darn near)... Love how they have Stone Brewing on tap! And their meet pizza with beefalo was AMAZING!

I've been in bars with more beer options(Charlotte). I've been in other Barley's restaurants (Knoxville). I've had better pizza(Chicago). All that said, this Barley's has a certain something... a mix of all the right ingredients. Every draft choice is superb. The bar was clean and cozy downstairs, loud and exciting upstairs. I didn't eat on this visit, but being from Knoxville, I've had Barley's pizza about fifty times. The service was fast and friendly. Located right off of Main Street, this Barley's has something for everyone, from pool tables, darts, and Foosball, to beer, more beer, and great atmosphere!

    (5)
  • Sharp H.

The main thing that would make this bar better was if fewer people knew about it, or maybe if there was an identical one on the other side of downtown. I say that because the biggest drawback to coming to Barley's at any given time is how crowded it's going to be. If you want dinner, you're either going to have to show up real early or eat at the bar most of the time, because the place is packed. Other than that, absolutely no complaints. I've always liked the food here, especially the pizza and the garlic knots, although nothing they serve is earth-shattering. The beer selection is great, although it would be nice to have something to go slumming on, like MHL or PBR. The atmosphere is great, in the way that all the old converted warehouses and factories in Greenville are, with the old wood, exposed bricks, high ceilings and towering windows. I wouldn't recommend sitting outside after dark, though, because you're going to be swamped with pedestrians and cigarette smoke. And make sure you spend time upstairs shooting pool or playing darts. I had no idea that the upstairs existed for years, and when I found out about it, it was a revelation. Also I have no idea why you'd bring your kid here, and I don't often see them, but according to some of these reviews you run into them sometimes. If you want to avoid that, just go upstairs, since no one under 21 is allowed up there.

Overall, one of the best all round bars in Greenville. This was usually where we kicked off every night out in college, and it still is every time I come home. While it is a taproom and liquor is not on the menu, the pizza is top shelf along with the 50+ beers they have on tap. The coolest part of this bar is definitely the second floor. Not only do they serve a different 30 beers on tap from the downstairs, but the floor is decked out with 8 billiard tables, 3 dart boards, shuffleboard, and fusbal. So if you're into playing games, drinking beer, and eating awesome pizza you won't find anything better in Greenville...or anywhere for that matter. The pool is usually free on the weekdays too.

This is my favorite place to grab some fantastic pizza and just about any beer i could possibly think of.. my most recent visit was last week. My boyfriend and i tried the Caribbean .. white pizza, topped with artichoke, onion, spinich, and jerk chicken.. SSSOOOO GOOD!!

    (5)
  • Amy C.

While the white pizza was decent, and just like my two stars says I have put better stuff in my mouth...what killed this "taproom" for me was the atmosphere... We arrived close to 5 pm on a Saturday and were seated immediately and were shocked to learn no "domestic crap beers" were available...only the "best" here...(what about those of us that like "crap beer" and what's with the no liquor as well?) We settled on the least micro-brew-y of the selections and tried to enjoy our pizza and beer in a "taproom" only to find ourselves eating at what became an isle for people to peer at us while they were waiting to be seated...and oh..don't forget all the screaming children in tow with fellow diners and waiting patrons. In an attempt to escape romper room we headed upstairs to the "bar"...and I still chuckle saying that... because the wait must have been impossible for the impatient families to bear as they started standing on the stairs to the "bar" upstairs and in some cases carrying their toddlers into the bar area... Maybe if I enjoyed drinking microbrew with children I would have liked this place better...

This is one of my personal favorites. The selection of calzones, pizzas, pasta and make beer never let me say no to this place. Service wonderful. Ambiance very good. Crowd always looks cheerful. If you go there after reading my review try the Voodoo Pasta. THE BEST!

  • Robin D.

I really like the pizza here and love that you can get it by the slice! They have a great beer selection! We've had some really good servers and some really distracted servers, so we never know which to expect. It's definitely a bonus that's it's within walking distance.

    (4)
  • Jason R.

The pizza, not so much. Ok crust with a kinda bland sauce and a vague (not browned) cheese. If it were a review of the cheese pizza, my benchmark, only two stars would shine above. The beer... That's the point. I couldn't try any of the cellared beers; I still had to drive. But the selection of local and microbrews on tap and bottled is excellent. The focus of quality clearly is the beer, and there they succeed.

    (4)
  • Jonathan T.

Didn't realize how much I liked this place until I moved away--to Chicago, of all places. The beer selection is in a league of its own, the pizza is great, and did I mention there's pool and darts upstairs?

  • Aaron C.

Cool atmosphere, Great place to hang out, oh yeah the Pizza is good too!.. The only thing I don't like about this place is they skimp on the sauce. I order my pizza with extra sauce and its good to go.

  • Erin W.

Yum! Barley's always seems to please - whether you're with kids or out for a date night. i love their draft selection and their pizza cannot be beat. Calzones are great too, and (usually) can be made into 2 meals...

  • Ruben L.

For the area, this is pretty decent pizza. My wife and I lived in SC for a year, and took a couple friends here one evening. We had the Jamaican jerk pizza which was pretty good. They also have a HUGE slection of beers. My wife tried the chocolate beer, only to realize there are some things that chocolate doesn't go well with. A nice sized place, a nice place to take out of towners for a casual beer and pie.

    (3)
  • Allison F.

Wait - the pizza is SO GOOD here! Order the WHOLE PIE and you're guaranteed to have a piping hot, flavorful, five-star pizza experience! Barley's has a wide variety of fresh toppings and the best service around. Go upstairs for a game of pool afterward - fun!

    (5)
  • Rachael L.

Poor atmosphere, bland food, and apparently dirty. There was a cockroach wandering across the bar upstairs while we were waiting to be seated, and my knife at the table was disgusting. We then waited about an hour for our food to arrive, and conversation was difficult due to the noise level. Seating was uncomfortably close to the people behind us - my chair was maybe two inches from the guy behind me when I sat at a comfortable distance from the table. The Pasta Primavera was supposed to have alfredo sauce on it, but the alfredo sauce seemed to have been refrigerated and then reheated, rather than freshly cooked, since the cheese and oil had all separated (y'all know how leftover alfredo sauce heats up...). I tried my husband's slice of pizza...it was alright. Nothing to write home about if you know what I mean. I can't for the life of me understand why this place would be so packed since the food tastes like leftovers and the atmosphere feels like an aging suburbanite attempting to impress a hipster. Perhaps it is the sheer number of taps...but coming from Portland (with tons of local breweries), and not actually particularly being fond of beer, I don't consider this to be a draw.

    (2)
  • Michael T.

If you love standard Domestic Beer, I'm sorry, but consider Barley's a good opportunity to venture out a little. You can definitely find something you like, or like better. This is a great place for what it is. I usually end up finding yet another beer I really enjoy thoroughly, and really, what could be more fun than sampling more beer? Ok, don't answer that. I can't write about atmosphere and all that. It's what you'd expect from a 'taproom'. I CAN say however, if you are a freak like me that can't enjoy the Mozzarella cheese on Pizzas' without seriously paying for it later (and I'm not even lactose intolerant!), you have GOT to try the soy cheese pizza here. You will fall to your knees in gratitude to the Gods that you can finally enjoy again that perfect marriage of Pizza and Beer....with ZERO consequences! ...and you won't even know the difference unless you are fixating on it and it that case, you'll only appreciate that it's actually good. Kinda unbelievable, because nothing that is a 'substitute' is generally that great. I give them 4 stars for being Good at what they are and not trying to be something else. It gets another star for even having something as ridiculous as a "soy cheese pizza" and having it taste really good! I feel like I should be doing yoga and hugging trees for even eating soy, and I can't believe a beer joint converted me (and kudos to my wife for literally forcing me to try it). For those of you that have 'issues' with some dairy more than others, get in the car, and be very excited.

If you like beer, then you will LOVE this place! I recommend the upstairs bar. Whole different set of taps and a very knowledgeable bartender. Amazing beer selection.Especially if you love IPA's. I don't quite remember the food, but I think it was excellent! (I ate after drinking). As far as beer is concerned... 5 stars!

    (5)
  • Todd J.

Barleys, Moretti's, and Happy Pie are the best pizza joints in the area. However, Barley's wins on atmosphere, and is the only place a beer lover in Greenville will ever go. The problem for me is that I normally turn an $8 calzone into an $18 tab by adding on two craft beers. These beers are definitely worth it, but I have to keep myself away. The service is top notch, but if you show up on a Friday, you had better expect a wait. The atmosphere is reminiscent of a german beer hall, so enjoy every second of it.

  • Laura M.

I go to Barley's to check out the beer list. They just introduced DogFish Head and always have a great selection of brews across the country. I prefer to sit at the bar and find the bartenders are very informative and passionate about beer. They have more taps upstairs where there are also darts and pool tables. I don't go here on Fri/Sat nights so not sure how crowded the upstairs gets but it has a good vibe. Of course you can always enjoy the pizza - I can't resist a wood-grilled pizza. Also interesting note, they do not serve french fries at this institution. No fatty fried food here - just good old beer.

  • Tom G.

Good pizza. Usually very happy with it. I have been here many times over the last 4 years. CALL AHEAD if you need soy cheese on your pizza. It's on the menu but not always available. Calzone is good. Good atmosphere.

Horrible-Horrible service!!! Late lunch on a Saturday--server was clearly irritated about having to be there. Place was barely occupied. I figured in this slow economy, and after busy lunch the place would welcome us in. NO!! Ordered food and beer--no beer. When I asked about it, it turned into an all out denial. Why not just say, "sorry" and get me a beer instead of arguing with me over IF I ordered it or NOT. Lousy!!! I'm planning to return to G'ville for another 30 days of business, but none of my $$ will be spent at Barley's!!

    (1)
  • T E.

Decent beer selection, but that's about it. The pizza is sub par. Sadly, Papa Johns is better. Mellow Mushroom is far superior pizza. The place is dark and dirty. Bartenders have an attitude. I've been to the Barley's in Knoxville and Asheville and they are much better.

    (2)
  • C P.

Definitely a fan. Great choices of beer and pizza!. How can you go wrong with pizza and beer, especially imported beer... Not that I have anything against Miller or Michelob, but sometimes change is good. The assortment of pizza was amazing, good portions giving any variety of ways to make it.
