I've been going to Edisto Island in August for the last five summers and one of our traditions is that I take my nieces out to lunch at least once. Their favorite place for lunch is The Waterfront. The original location of The Waterfront was on Big Bay Creek (hence the name) and when they moved the restaurant a number of years ago they kept the name, but it isn't on the water any more. My nieces enjoy any salad bar with lots of green olives, and any place that has good grilled cheese sandwiches. On our recent trip I had an Oyster Po' Boy sandwich, and another time I had the Low Country BLT (with green tomatoes). They were both very good. Last year I had the crab cake sandwich which was okay but I found it to be a little soggy. Their dinner crab cakes I liked better. I've also had the Pimiento Burger, which I enjoyed. The Waterfront has a reasonable selection of local beer, and my favorites were the Charleston Lager and Palmetto Amber, both from the Palmetto Brewery. The sweet potato fries make a perfect accompaniment to Charleston Lager. The owner's family runs Flower's Seafood Company, and his wife's family owns King's Farm Market, both on Hwy 174 north of town and both places we ALWAYS shop at during the week.

The food was great and the service was great!! Shrimp had a lightly battered and the slaw which is not usually good was also good. At night you have to pay for hush puppies by the basket but they r free at lunch. I know some of the reviews were not so good but we really enjoyed it.

Our family has frequented Waterfront numerous times and it has never dissapointed. The fried flounder, fried oysters, and hushpuppies are an absolute must-order! Service is friendly. Can accommodate large and small parties. Great for kids. The place was packed during all u can eat crab legs so I'm assuming those are good too. We've eaten at just about every establishment in Edisto and we keep finding ourselves coming back.

My family and I just came back from a vacation on Edisto beach. We decided to eat out one night and ended up at The Waterfront. We weren't sorry we did. The portions are huge, enough for two people to split. The food is great. The people in my group who had the grits say it was amazing. I had a combination platter with grilled shrimp and a crab cake. The crab cake was a little dry and clearly not made from lump crab meat. The shrimp were cooked well and it came with a huge portion of cole slaw, green beans, and another side. The cole slaw was some of the best I've ever had, a little sweet and peppery. Oh, and the hushpuppies were to die for! We went back for a second visit with a bigger group on Friday. Not super busy, considering it was 6pm on a Friday night. We had a group of 10 and were seated right away. Everyone was very happy with their meals once again. The waiter was the same gentlemen from the first night we went, very polite and personable. Everything went very smoothly until it was time to pay the bill. The waiter didn't tell everyone that an 18% gratuity was already added to the bills we received. It was also very small on the actual bill. So my mom paid in cash, leaving an additional 20% without knowing the tip was included already. The waiter didn't say a word about it, I guess assuming she meant to leave nearly 40% tip. I paid with a credit card, as did the rest of my group. We noticed it before it was too late. But it left a sour note at the end of the meal for my mom, who felt ripped off.

The food is always great. The servers are very attentive and pretty fast. I've been coming here since I was little and Waterfront has always been one of my favorite places to eat. The gift store inside has cute affordable peices. A couple days ago, I went in with a group of 11 and we got seated quickly and were served right away.

The complaints about service seem to have improved the waitstaff but not the food. This was our first stop for seafood and we left let-down except for one of the four. The good: My wife ordered Calamari and she was very pleased as they cooked it properly and had more than enough for a meal. The salad that comes with meal is pretty nice size with cucumbers and tomatoes. They bring the dressing on they side which helps the customer distribute how much they want or need. The rest: My in laws both ordered the Low Country Stir Fry and were less than impressed. Now I wouldn't have ordered stir fry from a seafood joint but it had shrimp in the stir fry. Neither one really liked their meal. The hushpuppies were nothing great either. They had bits of corn in them. The Bad: My Tuna was cooked to medium or so it seemed on first bite. Then I realized that one side was done about perfect but the flip was not executed very well as it barely touched the pan. The Tuna steak was also very fatty, stringy, and just low quality meat for $19. I did not enjoy my steak at all. I bought a tuna steak in Ohio that 3 times better than this and cheaper. The ginger rub and teriyaki glaze didn't work for me either. I should of complained but I was trying be optimistic and hoping that the next few bites would get better. Then i felt like I ate too much to send it back. I like my tuna pan seared to be honest but this one wasn't even hot enough. Either that or they let my tuna sit too long in the window. If I am spending close to $20 for a plate then I expect quality with my food. I felt like this place did not own up to their price point. If the meals were around $12-$15 then they would go up a star. They have a nice idea with the All you can eat ($18.99) which I think I should of tried.

The food was great as well as the service. There's a few good options if you do not eat seafood. Also, they can pour a good drink ;-)

We had an excellent dinner at The Waterfront. The service was friendly and the seafood and sides were fresh and delicious. We started with fried green tomatoes which were tasty and served over creamy cheese grits. Salads were fresh and the dressings were fine. I had the roasted trigger fish special (a rarity in seafood restaurants) that was served with a spicy sweet glaze. The fish was flaky and flavorful. The glaze was great but overpowered the fish. Better to be served on the side. My wife had a seafood combo of crab cake and grilled shrimp. The crab cake had plenty of crab and the shrimp were grilled perfectly. A good combo. All the sides, especially the cheese grits were very good. The Waterfront is a nice place to eat and a good choice while in the area.

Nice atmosphere. Calamari is nice and lightly breaded, Marinara sauce is light. Servers were accommodating. The dinner was overall good. I would return. A good nite to remember is to go early, you have quick service and parking is a breeze.

Excellent food and service. I had fried shrimp and flounder. They where so fresh. I will be back next time that I am in town!!

Ok...so I am always a bit suspicious of "seafood joints" even at the coast. But, this was excellent! Thursday after Memorial Day, party of 7 seated immediately....service was awesome! Thanks Belle! Go Tigers! We ordered hugely... Fried green tomatoes were fabulous and a first for our friend from New England. Pimento cheese was a good appetizer as well. The various seafood combos were excellent.... Fried flounder, oysters and shrimp were so very good. The broiled scallops were not to my liking, but others liked them. Shrimp and grits were classic and delicious! Shrimp Alfredo was great as well. Can the best fried oyster ever v. Not such tasty scallops raise this from a 4 star to a 5 star? YES!

Had dinner here one night with the family while we were staying out at Edisto Beach. The food is OK. I had their pasta that's advertised as a restaurant specialty on their menu. I was hungry, so I ate it all up, but it tasted about the same as Ragu primavera sauce and some frozen shrimp heated up and poured over some pasta. It's a little pricey too, for the quality of food. And I guess since we had 5 adults and one child in our party, they added 20% to the check for a tip. The waitress (who was very friendly) would have gotten that from us anyway, but I'm not a fan of places where they automatically add the tip like that.

The food taste like plastic. I would not recommend this place. The server was really good but I really wanted some good seafood.

Food was good but not excellent. Disappointed by the lack of service from our waitress. The fried oysters and hush puppies were the best choices in our triple combos.

The food was just ok. Slow service. Pricey bill at the end. Not worth the price of the menu.

The waterfront was open on a Monday for lunch, which was great. Unfortunately, the food was not that delicious. I had the salad bar with grilled shrimp as an add on. The shrimp was almost $5 and included 7 shrimp, which was quite small. The salad bar was fine and had a lot of different topping options. My fiancé had the crab cake sandwich which he did not enjoy at all. We will not be coming back here during this or any stay on Edisto island.

Listen, if you're looking for fine dining on Edisto Island you might be on the wrong island. If you're looking for an old school southern fried food seafood expedition with some newer decorations on the walls this might be just the place. Let's face it, you're probably only going out to eat when you're on Edisto after you've cooked four or five meals by yourself. You're not looking for a restaurant that wows you with fine linen tablecloths and house made sorfito sauce. No, you're looking for the biggest most succulent fried seafood items you can possibly shove into your mouth. And that is a worthy cause my friend. Enter The Waterfront. Be enchanted by the miniature lighthouse out front. Be wowed by the longest wheel chair accessible ramp you ever seen outside of a major metropolitan city. Take solace in the safety that the cinderblock walls provide for you. Reminisce about high school assemblies with the wonderful stackable chairs in the non booth sections. And lastly gaze at the, not one but two, cascading water elements that enhance this room's ambiance like a crown of jewels. If you've ever been to a seafood restaurant in the south you're familiar with this place's menu. There are a variety of different ways to get fresh and delicious seafood into your face whether it be in the form of pasta, po boys, or everyone's favorite breaded and deep fried! We ordered a variety of different items from the menu. I stuck with the classic seafood platter with the fried oysters, fried shrimp, and broiled scallops. My wife went with the shrimp and grits. Our entrées were served extremely quickly, like impressively fast. We had salads to start with and as soon as we were done the entrées arrived at the table. I want to take a moment here to commend our fantastic server Belle. She was seriously a delight. Truly just the sweetest thing and so happy to be serving my wonderful family. We were all quite touched. My wife's shrimp and grits was huge. Seriously. Wow! That's a lot of food. She shared it around the table and it didn't look like anyone even made a dent. My seafood platter was quite pleasant as well. The veggie today was green beans with a delightful Asian ginger sort of glaze on them. The real star of the show though was the fried oysters. Giant savory soft yet crispy amazing nuggets of seafood bliss. I honestly looked on my plate and wish that I had gotten nothing but fried oysters. The broiled scallops were an incredible disappointment. Bitter, and not flavorful. However the awesomeness of the oysters definitely made up for their shortcomings. In all truth this meal was a four-star experience for me. However Belle's service earned an extra star. Towards the end of the meal I asked for the craziest favor I've asked any server at any time. 24 sheets of plain white printer paper. Belle didn't even blink. Within a minute she was back with my request. She informed me that the manager would need $2.00 for the paper. That was a bit of a shock, but I was in great need of 24 sheets of plain white paper so I was willing to ignore the fact that the running cost for 500 sheets of 16 lb paper is about 10 bucks. I was fine with the roughly 400% markup. A man has to do what a man has to do when he really needs 24 sheets of white printer paper. I gladly handed over the cash. But not more than two minutes later Belle returned with my money, informing me that the manager realized how silly the whole situation was. Silly maybe, dire yes. I'm glad the manager had a change of heart. I would have paid $3.00. I'm glad I didn't though. I'm glad Belle was our server, and I look forward to diving in to a plate of The Waterfront's fried oysters on my next trip to Edisto.

Ate lunch here with the family and food, service, and prices were all very good. We ordered a shrimp po boy (large portion), the pimento cheese burger (really good!) an order of hushpuppies (just as good as other reviewers say) and two kids meals. Would definitely recommend and return!

This restaurant usually stays open the latest on Edisto Island. The food is always good and last time I was there they had a guitarist playing music while sitting at the bar.

This review is only pertaining to service, not food. We arrived during lunch hours, waking in right after another couple and were refused service because they were "closed". The couple that walked in right before us was sitting in a booth reviewing the menu, but we were not even allowed to sit down. Lunch hours run until 3:00 PM. After arguing with the hostess about not being served we walked out of the restaurant at 2:50 PM, so I'd guess we arrived between 2:40 and 2:45 as we were not promptly greeted and had time to wander around the gift shop. We've enjoyed their food in the past, but service like this sure doesn't make you want to open your wallet when there are other fresh seafood options on the island with friendly service. With all the bad service reviews on yelp maybe take a hint and hire employees that work for you, not against you.

Went for the Sunday brunch with 5 adults but 3 of us decided to order seafood from the menu since there wasn't any on the buffet. The 2 who had ayce buffet really enjoyed it and those who had ordered seafood were happy with their food. We had ordered grilled shrimp and sweet potato fries but that plate came with fried shrimp and regular fries but waitress apologized and reordered the correct plate. She left the wrong plate on our table so we nibbled on it. Waitress was very nice and treated us with respect. We would eat there again due to good food and good quiet atmosphere.

We visited on a Saturday night and had a great experience. I'll admit I was a little reluctant based on some of the reviews but we left very satisfied and happy. Huge portions of seafood, our table had a mix of both fried and grilled, both equally tasty. Hushpuppies were a tasty treat, made with real corn. Even the dinner salad was fresh and well prepared. I will definitely keep this on my list for next time and tell any Edisto visiting friends.

Ok food, lousy service. Ordered a $17 low country stir fry. Got three shrimp, five thin slices of sausage, a few tiny pieces of chicken and LOTS of cabbage and rice. Others at table ordered all you can eat crab legs and waited and waited and waited. Not worth the "low country" price. Would not recommend!!!

We ate there twice when we were at Edisto last week - the prices are the best in the area and the food is very good. I had the broiled flounder (2 large pieces), which was delicious. My mom had a HUGE crabcake (the appetizer portion) and a side of slaw, and my sister loved the fried oysters. Good place!

Decent restaurant, nothing special, slow service. My family vacations in Edisto a lot, and when this place first opened we jumped at a chance to visit. Lots of seafood which is expected, and it is not really bad at all. Though for the price, I would go elsewhere or get some fresh fish from one of the many places around to cook ourselves.

The Waterfront Restaurant was actually a pleasant surprise during our trip. The restaurant has a very laid back atmosphere. We stopped in twice during our week-long vacation at Edisto Beach. Both times we thoroughly enjoyed the food. The hush puppies are a MUST. They are simply excellent. The price was right too. And it's a great respite from the punishing South Carolina summer heat. I took a star away because the service seemed a little iffy, even when were were the only ones in there. But they were still very friendly and did good enough that I'd definitely recommend this place to anybody that is vacationing on the island.

I like to call myself a realistic foodie. I think that to understand the quality of a restaurant you have to take into consideration the surrounding environment. Past experience and comparing food items to those at other restaurants will always be part of my reviews. But to do it justice, I will try to review a restaurant based on my whole experience in the context of its environment ie I don't expect a filet mignon at a roadside burger joint but I do expect a good burger at a decent price. The Waterfront Restaurant: This restaurant is probably one of the most popular restaurants on the island and one of the most traditional in appearance. It is a fair sized restaurant with its own large parking lot. This place will pack out for dinner. I would recommend either eating an earlier dinner or trying to wait it out and eat once you notice the crowd starting to die down. This has been my strategy for group of 6 or less and we've always been seated promptly. The service here is fine for what it is, most of the servers are college age kids who have been around the island for years; they are very nice and eager to help. They will do whatever they can to make your meal enjoyable but at times it can be unnecessarily slow and they will tend to miss a few things here and there. But if you were looking for 5 star service you'd probably not come here anyway. The Waterfront runs two menus; lunch and dinner. The lunch menu is only missing a few items that are featured on the dinner menu. I try eating there when the dinner menu is an option; there are more items that I like to choose from rather than settling to eat something off the lunch menu. Like most of the island restaurants this place is great for carry out, you will want to call your order in before arriving to save time, but then again you're at the beach why be in such a hurry? Each day of the week they will feature an all you can eat buffet which changes things up from time to time. I would recommend going for it if they are featuring something you like. On the weekends they will run a breakfast and lunch buffet together, you will have choose which one you want (pieces of both are not available without buying 2 buffet meals). The buffets are alright but I wish they featured more seafood options. I will say the fried chicken on the buffet is great!! And if they have bread pudding going I would choose the buffet just for that. On to the food: This place is a prime example of understanding where you are in the world and what other options there are on the island. Having said that, I've not had a bad meal here but I tend not to be adventurous in my ordering when on the island. The grilled or fried shrimp have to be the best item they serve here; they come with fries or a bake potato and a salad. You can't go wrong going either way. It won't sound like a lot of food but they give more than you think. The problem I have is that it's so good I want to keep eating. If you want to be more adventurous and are very much starving from a long day in the sun on the beach --then go with the shrimp and grits. These grits are "cheese grits" accompanied by a handful of fresh grilled shrimp and Andouille sausage for a little kick. If you skipped breakfast at the Sea Cow this is what you order for dinner to make up for it. Anything fried here will be good, sometimes it will come with a twist and that just makes the meal more fun and exciting than just having yet another friend seafood item. They will normally have a special every night and it might be worth of try if it something you might enjoy. Otherwise I would stick to what you know already. Dessert: I don't know what it is about pie and Edisto but these are my second best I've ever had. They come from the King's Market. They won't have a huge selection like the Sea Cow but you can have a slice or two here and then on your way home stop at kings market and get a whole pie to enjoy later. My favorites include the Apple Pear Pie and the Pecan Pie. In closing, this is a pretty good place for a larger more traditional, Carolina Seafood meal while you're on the island and is worth giving it a try.

I've now been to this restaurant twice, once last summer and once today. Today's service was better than last year--we dubbed it "The World's Slowest Restaurant" last year due to the crazy slow service we received. We were there nearly two hours at lunch--and it wasn't even very busy--last year. This year we were in and out in 45 minutes, and today's lunch is what I'm referring to below. My boyfriend was a bit disappointed in their beer selection. He liked the flounder sandwich he ordered, though. I found my hamburger to be quite tasty. We were reluctant to try the lunch buffet. If you're going for great food, you'll be disappointed; if you're going for okay food, this place is fine.

Casual atmosphere. Great food and service even though they appeared to be short staffed. Food came out fast. Had the all you can eat Low Country Boil (Monday Nights). Server let me take some with me which is rare for all you can eat dishes.

This is a decent family restaurant with a run of the mill menu. Went there our first night in Edisto. Food was not bad but after eating at a few other places on the Island there is nothing pulling me back to this one. Decent value but nothing to write home about.

Casual restaurant that's a good choice for dinner after a day on the beach. I saw some complaints about service on other reviews but our service was great. The fried oysters were some of the best I've ever had--really fresh and not greasy at all. The fried green tomatoes were fantastic. And the Key LIme pie was also great. Crab soup was ok. Stir fry dishes are huge servings--too much for one person.

At the height of the season, this restaurant accommodated our large party of 17. It did require a bit of a wait, but we were fed nonetheless. The seafood is obviously their bread-and-butter. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything special. People in my party ate fried and broiled flounder, fried shrimp, a flounder sandwich, ribeye steak, and smothered chicken. I had the blackened tuna, and I felt that it was prepared and cooked well. The pricing is a bit much in comparison to the decor (cinderblock walls with kitschy decorations). The service was average. Granted, it is difficult to serve a large party, but we were required to ask multiple times for needed items.

This place did nothing to offend me. But nothing to impress me either. The food is fit for a cafeteria line. (the scallop entree was a tin of pale, flavorless scallops-seriously no butter, sauce, or even a hint of carmelization from the heat, w/ a giant side of yellow squash and zuchini-equally as flavorless, though there was evidence of the use of heat on at least them. There was, what should be an illegal amount of, mrs dash seasoning salt dumped atop everything, in what i can only assume was an attempt to garnish. I am not allergic to shell fish;however, i am allergic to chemically packaged scallops-the chemical they are packed in- for this reason i only order what are supposed to be fresh scallops. This is an island, i had no reason to doubt they were fresh. I gad my normal (not fatal obviously, just annoying) allergic reaction to these. The service was vanilla. The building was vanilla. I wont even remember this place soon. Sorry.

Atmosphere is so-so and service is not the greatest. They seem to have a different "all you can eat" special every day. We went for Easter brunch and the food was amazing! Best clam chowder ever AND bread pudding ever! Recommend for food alone.

We visitied the Waterfront Restaurant while on vacation at Edisto. We were camping and managed to get halfway presentable to go for dinner. After driving around the island a couple of times we decided that this looked to be the our best bet. The restaurant is located above a related (how I can't recall) business, and can't seat more than 75 people if that. There is a small bar in the back for the smokers and a nice view of a marsh area that leads to the ocean. We ordered a bottle of wine (decent list, affordable and paired with entrees) and some scallops and shrimp. The portions were ample and everything tasted very fresh as most seafood comes right to the restaurants from the boats along the coast. The server was friendly enough and we met a very nice couple from Scotland who were traveling around the area as well. After a good meal and a nice bottle of wine (which we ended up sharing with that couple as we got the last bottle - this started what we be a pleasant and lengthy conversation). A bit on the pricey side, especially if you're camping, but worth it. One thing I've noticed about places like this on the coast is that the food is usually pretty good and the ambience ok, but the prices will usually hover in the upper teens. I suppose this is due to the fact that they have a captive audience, especially on the islands.
