So let's get the 5 star rating out of the way. Is this what I'd call a 5 star dining establishment? No. But it is the best cheesesteak I've had outside of Philly (well close to Philly). Out of the "top two" ie Pat's and Geno's in Philly, I'm quite frankly not a fan of either. Geno's steak reminds me of lunch meat and Pat's is cut too thick and too fatty for my liking. I don't really care for the "new kid on the block" Tony Luke's either. The best cheesesteak around Philly imo is Ray's in Lansdale. The meat is of very high quality, cut thin, dry texture but moist meat, and sliced thin. Everything I love about Ray's can be found at Very's. I like my cheesesteak like I like my pulled pork. Cut/shredded thinly so it wilts nicely to give it a drier texture. A high quality meat has to be used for this to be successful and not have dried meat. Once you actually bite into the meat, the trapped juice is exposed and melts in your mouth. Very's succeeds in every sense in the right meat for a cheesesteak. The steak is of great quality and cooked perfectly on the flattop. Another key to Very's being great is their use of very little oil. The steak is not greasy at all, and any juices comes from the meat itself. That is their philosophy with all of the food though. Even their fries are oven baked, not deep fried. I don't think they even have a deep frier on the premises. Ok, so that's one of the three essential components of a cheesesteak. Let's talk about the next two: the roll & the cheese. The rolls are imported Amoroso rolls from Philly and are perfect for a cheesesteak. They are soft and hold up well to the steak. The next is the cheese. They do not offer the "authentic" cheese whiz (thankfully as I hate the dreaded stuff), and instead top the sandwich by default with provolone, though I'm sure they'd be happy to put on whatever cheese they have. My only complaint about the provolone is it's not very sharp, but I like a strong cheese. By default the sandwich comes plain (as it should be eaten imo), but you can add onions, mushrooms, peppers or even make it a pizza cheesesteak by adding mozzarella and sauce (all at no additional cost). As far as sides, I won't bother going into too much detail. The fries are great, though as I said, oven baked. The vegetables are all fresh and the salads are actually pretty decent. I plan on trying a couple of the hoagies and definitely the pizza at some point. Bottom line, if you're looking for a cheesesteak in Columbia, this is THE place to go.

We went for the cheesesteaks. They were delish! Next time I would definitely get mine all the way - I had only mushrooms this time and when the server took my order - I noticed she seemed to pause and ask only mushrooms? as if that was unusual. As some other reviewers pointed out - the place could use a good deep cleaning but other than that - bathrooms clean, service good, cheesesteaks awesome. Thank you Yelp* reviewers!

Everything is just as described by Michael T. I can just taste the sandwich by reading his review. My father loves cheese steak, and he even gets desperate enough to eat Subway's concoction. This restaurant is the standard from which he rates other cheese steaks.

Philly Cheesesteak Extraordinaire! Cheesesteak with peppers, onions, mayo, and Cheese Whiz! That's the way, aha, aha, I like it! This is one good sandwich! Just perfect! The place is nothing fancy, seems clean and tidy though. I got carry out- service was fast, didn't have to wait long at all. You can see into the open kitchen and hear the clackity clack as they chopity chop your beef. All in all, one good sandwich, if your in the neighborhood stop in, you won't be disappointed.

Wife and son both had cheese steaks (which I sampled :). Excellent! Now, this is not truly a Philly cheese steak since they don't use a cheese-whiz type product, which I abhor anyway. I'll take provolone any day. Get the full size sandwich, which is a full meal, with grilled onions, lettuce, and tomato. Almost forgot - the roll is slightly steamed and thus soft, not crusty - outstanding! Oven fries were crisp and well seasoned, but ultimately not necessary due to the large sandwiches. I could not decide between the BBQ chicken pizza and the "supreme", so my waitress suggested I wait 10 minutes for the buffet to begin - what a call, I tried every variety hot out of the oven! The BBQ chicken pizza was the best, covered with big chunks of white meat and not overpowering sauce. The supreme and veggie pizzas were very fresh tasting, as you'd like. Thin crust was really very good, a nice change from the ubiquitous cardboard just about everywhere else in town. Note that the pizza buffet is Saturday dinnertime only. hope to try all-can-eat spaghetti (tuesday-wednesday) next time. Orange cake with orange icing was nice to finish, definitely a throwback to the 70's for me. Don't worry about the neighborhood; this place is in a small shopping center on a major road (US route 1). No more or less crime than anywhere else. The county sheriff HQ is a mile down the road if you are truly paranoid. I haven't been to Very's in many years although I live nearby - my loss! I will be back regularly now.

I really wasn't quite sure what rating to give this place. The food is absolutely great and the service is good as well. The thing that makes me give this restuarant less than a 5 star rating is the roach problem me and my family encountered the last time we went there. We would love to go back there to eat but because of this, we are reluctant.

I live up in Charlotte but I am in Columbia for a work assignment. There is a Talk thread there about how we don't have a good cheesesteak place in the Queen City, so I searched Yelp (of course!) and found Michael's review. Everything I know about Philly cheesesteaks I have learned from reading it. Smart man, he clearly knows what he's talking about. So I made the half hour trip from the Harbison area down to Very's and I can say that it was well worth the trip. The cheesesteak was excellent. Not greasy, not too wet, and on a nice soft roll with lovely melted cheese on top. I scarfed down the "large" with a Bud Light (it seemed appropriate). Service could have been better, but that's just a small ding. I waited ten minutes for the girl to take my check before I asked and found that I should be paying up front. And in doing so, it gave me the opportunity to give my compliments directly to the chef. (He's apparently here from Philly specifically to cook these wonderful sandwiches.)

Ok it was Tuesday but we got seated quickly , waited on fast and food was VERY hot and it was good. Reasonable priced, waiters was AWESOME. It was all you can spaghetti night but we decided to go with the Philly cheesesteaks. Again it was hot off the grill. The sandwiches were huge and you picked what you wanted on them. We will be back.

Verys is a NE hideaway with very affordable and delicious food. Here are my top ten reasons it's awesome: 10- baked spaghetti, crispy cheese on the side of the dish, excellent meatballs, yum OR baked lasagna, same rocking idea, but layers of yum 9- specials daily so you don't have to make up your mind, just go and eat whatever is on special. 8- baked, seasoned fried 7- experienced service, they've all been there 20 years 6- salad bar! Few places still have this diy item, this is always fresh and clean 5- free cake! They have a giant yellow cake for everyone at lunch on Fridays 4-philly cheesesteak, it's where these people came from, duh 3-pizza in your face, thick, fresh, excellent toppings....so good 2- manicotti cheesy extravaganza, seriously, if you like cheese and being dang happy, this is your dish 1- hometown fab, the decor is 90s, the strip mall is sketchy, but if you miss this joint you're not experiencing Columbia.

All I can say is that year after year this place pumps out pizza that I like ! I get the thin crust pizza and take it home and sprinkle yellow Jamaican curry powder on it, which makes it even better and pop in Star Wars or some great classic that's on and enjoy my PIZZA.....

I tried this place for lunch based on some of the Yelp reviews and they all got it right! The outside of this establishment is very underwhelming and a tad bit scary. It could do with some maintenance....especially their sign, which slowly chipping away. The inside was better. I appeared to be clean, but a little outdated in furniture and decor. Kind of a mix between those creepy cafeteria type restaurants in retirement communities and something you would find in your tacky great aunt's house. But fear not! For the food is delicious! I ordered my food to go, so I can't tell you much about the sit down service. However, the lady that took my order at the register was very polite and I received my meal relatively quickly. I had the Mushroom Cheesesteak, all the way (lettuce, tomatoes, and grilled onions) with a side of their seasoned fries. The fries are very reminiscent of the Arby's Curly Fries without the Curly. If you like those, then you will love Very's fries! The cheesesteak was also great. It was a lot of meaty, juicy flavor in every bite! The only thing I didn't like was that you had to add the fries for an extra charge. I'm a big fan of meals and deals, so I don't take too kindly to all the separate little dishes. That being said, the price wasn't awful. It was around $10. I'll have to go back and try their pizza some time! I've read a lot of reviews of how wonderful it is! I'll let you know when I do.

This place is awesome. Stopped in for a lunch on Friday around 1:30. It was packed, but I was seated promptly. The menu is rather large, but I finally decided on a personal pepperoni lovers pizza and a trip to the salad bar. The salad bar was pretty good, everything was cold and the dressing all appeared to be homemade (the house Italian is amazing by the way). The pizza came out hot and fresh with stretchy mozzarella and nice large slices of pepperoni (I got thin crust). The food tasted fabulous and the service was awesome. I was in and out within 45 minutes. I will definitely be back.

The food taste good but this place has a SERIOUS ROACH PROBLEM and it seems this is ignored by the proprietors. I cannot understand why a landmark dining establishment would pretend this)problem does not exist. TOOOOOO MANY ROACHES. I see them way to often.

I decided that it was time for my husband and I to try something new. We always have our favorite places to go whenever we have appointments or things to do in other towns. I looked on Yelp for something new and I came across Very's. I'm not a sandwich person but my husband could eat cheesesteak sandwiches all day if I would let him so I took one for the team and we visited right when they opened one Wednesday afternoon. This place is amazing. The prices are fair and the decor is outdated but the place is clean. The waitstaff is friendly and can remember orders well without writing anything down. The salad bar is basic but fresh and tasty. We both got a cheesesteak and they were the best my husband has ever had. To be honest, I liked it! The only downside to the sandwich was how soggy it was from the meat. I know that's a Philly thing so who am I to judge? I did try a piece of their cheesecake with a sour cream topping. It sort of tastes like a yogurt...It's really good! We had a really good experience here. I'm glad that we gave it a shot. We will definitely be back.

Thank you, Very's, for serving a Philly cheese steak authentic enough for my Philly native husband. This is no small feat. His best friend growing up lived above a corner bar the friend's family owned. Their cheese steaks were to die for. In fact, two of their cheese steaks nearly cost us our lives on a return flight from Philly to Dallas - we narrowly avoided a stampede by the other passengers to discover the source of the tantalizing aromas emanating from the foil-wrapped cheesy goodness in the overhead bins, but I digress. We have lived all over the country the past thirty years and have never found one to rival the originals until now. Although we are about an hour away, we are already planning a return trip to Very's to try the pizzas everyone says are so good.

Went to Verys for the first time in about a year & the wonderful sweet staff still remembered my mother and I and our orders! We have been going to Verys for almost 7 years and hadn't been recently since we moved. We love their food! Their chicken broccoli is on point and top it off with their fresh and cold salad bar!

Had the great opportunity to try Very's for the first time over this past weekend. With my wife and my inlaws all ordering something different I had the chance to sample the Hot Italian sandwich, the Special Lasagna, and their Philly cheesesteak. All three were very good but for me the Hot Italian sandwich was the winner. It had the right amount of heat, a nice portion of sausage and some delicious peppers and onions complimenting the meat just right. The bun was soft and not overwhelmingly bready like some sandwich buns. Reasonable prices, good service and very good to excellent food will keep be coming back for more. Dont let the dingy exterior and the dated interior fool you, this place serves up some awesome food.

Ok so we were visiting Columbia and looking for food. Of course, I consult my magical Yelp app for assistance. I see the rave reviews posted by my trusted fellow yelpers, like Paul B. I say "forward to yonder cheese steak deliciousness, husband". I often speak to him like this. He is used to it. I was slightly on edge by the mention of roaches in one review. I am extremely wary of cleanliness issues but I press on. We arrived, were greeted and seated promptly. I am pleased, but looking for evidence of aforementioned crawling things... I see none, but I do see thick black crusty buildup on the ceiling fans and a/c vents. I remain on edge...so I resort to my ultimate "do I stay or do I go now" test. (test = I visit the restroom....if nasty and/or no soap is available, I make a pass by our table, grab husband by the collar and make a break for the exit with haste....if clean and properly supplied with soap I return to table, sit down and proceed to look over the menu) Husband is used to this too. The restroom is spotless and well supplied for hand washing. I am again pleased. I decide that a chance for a good cheese steak is worth overlooking the overall need for a deep cleaning. The sandwiches were excellent. All that was mentioned in the prior reviews, and then some. A neighboring table was served a pizza and it looked and smelled great. Husband and I decided to try pizza next time we visit. A good cleaning and this place would have gotten the five stars from me too!

I love the veggie lasagna! It's the only place I will eat lasagna at too. My husband loves the special lasagna.
