To find it, you have to know where it is. You don't just drive by it. The thing to get here is the Cheeseburger steak. It was actually highlighted on ESPN. It's just your little local greasy dinner type place, nothing super duper special, just a lot of Clemson history here. If you're a Clemson fan, you must stop here and sit a spell. Service was fast, folks were nice, no real complaints about it.

This little diner is set in Clemson, and its major appeal is obviously to be that go-to, mom-and-pop shop for the locals. It provides that really down-home feel... but once you look beyond that, the food is just so-so. The people are what make the experience, so if you do not have nice people, then why eat here? That is sort of how I felt. You walk into this off-the-beaten-path joint and plop down on one of their 12 counter seats. The menu is limited, and the ordering is simple. You tell your server what you want. My server did not say "You're welcome" once during my meal. I went with a standard cheeseburger and onion rings. My friend went with a BBQ plate with fries and an orange soda. The damage? $13. Not bad... but the people do not make it worth it. My cheeseburger was pretty mediocre. The meat was dry, and my buns were smothered in mayonnaise. The onion rings salvaged the meal. They were fresh out of the fryer and super crisp. Thank goodness. I usually dig into my friends' meals, but in this case, the sloppy Joe-esque BBQ looked unappetizing. It was sitting in a very bright orange sauce. Yikes... clearly not real BBQ. People continue viewing this as a Clemson dive because famous people have come, and I think this place has "tenure", per se. Nothing more. Brian Dawkins has been here... but I am a Cowboys fan, so that is not very appealing. I would definitely not return time and time again, even if I was a local.

Mac's is quickly becoming a place I will have stop at every time I'm in Clemson! Tonight was my second time there. Getting right to the stuff that matters: I consider myself a foodie and have a pretty sensitive palate. I'm picky over the food I eat and definitely wouldn't waste calories at a diner if it wasn't totally worth it! Mac's, once again, won me over. I repeated the same order I had the first time... A cheeseburger plate w/ onion rings and a salad. After all, it IS a diner! The bun was fresh, not soggy with mayonnaise at all - as I read in someone else's review. The meat was the perfect portion and the flavor was delicious! It simply let the natural flavor of the tasty beef shine through. The cheese, tomato and lettuce perfected this all-American meal! The onion rings... Yum. my!! Oh my lawd, perfectly crisp and the flavor rocked my taste buds! Probably the best I've ever had. Even the simple salad of iceberg lettuce, and what tasted like homegrown tomatoes was delish. The service was quick and efficient- even following a big game. Another reviewer wrote that they didn't say 'you're welcome'. Big deal! They're busy getting great food prepared to feed the revolving door of hungry patrons. Again, this is a diner; and the people, food, decor and two tv's playing football games makes it one of my favorites!

I recently went to Mac's for the first time and was rather disappointed. I have heard great stories of Mac's in the past and was looking forward to eating there before I graduate. Like one of the other reviews said, concession type of menu and greasy frozen food. Seeing the Clemson memorabilia was really cool but it could use some updating. It was a cool atmosphere, couldn't complain about the service, but I have had better burgers and fries for less.

Maybe it was the time of night (9:30), maybe it was the "In the Heat of the Night" locale, but our visit was a little like parachuting tandem- all I can say is ," I did it." 8 orange bar stools that where last upholstered at the grand opening greet customers with a concession style menu board behind the counter. Sit and they will get to your order in South Carolina time. The food was concession quality at best, our drink glass were scooped into the ice, and the folks were clearly not interested in making friends with strangers. Saw two cops (who the owner did not charge for dinner- worth a star) and some good ole boys there but not very engaging. However, if you are a Clemson Tiger, I can see how this is a must for students and alumni alike. The "wall funk" is a picture history of Clemson sports. Cool indeed. Worth a visit just to say you ate there next time it is highlighted in ESPN game day.

One of the worst experiences I have ever had. Once our waitress brought our food to us she didn't come back. The food is still good but I can't eat where customer service is that bad.

I have been going to Mac's for over 40 years now, and I have been through a lot of temporary, part-time help who come and go. For the most part, I have liked every one who worked there because they were young and energetic and had a good attitude in general. We ate at Mac's this past Friday night (a week ago...02/02/13), and the girl who was working behind the counter was the rudest server we have ever encountered there. She rushed us for our order, was very cold and detached when bringing our food, and was impatient and rude again at the register as my wife searched for change to pay the bill...(Mac's doesn't take cards and my wife had left her checkbook at the office by mistake) I don't know her name, but I hope this gets back to Pat and he does something about it. There is no sense in having a snitty little teenager representing your business like that. I almost told him that night, but I thought better of it. I guess I didn't want to get her in trouble in case she was just having a bad night. But my wife and I have gone back over it and she wasn't just having a bad night...she was being inexcusably rude. I don't your name, little girl...but if you plan to ever work in a real job where customer service really matters, you might consider putting on your big girl panties and adjusting your attitude, because I can tell you this with full conviction...if I were your employer and I saw this rating and commentary posted on Yelp by one of my most dedicated customers, you would be summarily dismissed without so much as a warning.

Mac's scores big for being a local spot to park your carcass. But, aside from the homegrown tomatoes and yummy gravy, the food doesn't distinguish itself. My thin burger patty disappeared in the bun and, despite mayonaise application, it was all just a little too dry. I think Mac's strength lies in comradery, onion rings and cheesy gravy fries so try for those things if you ever stop by.

The first real drive-in I've ever been to! You belly up to the bar and we had a quick lunch. It was cheap and easy and all three of us enjoyed what we ordered.

Right on target. The vinyl stools at the counter are Clemson Tiger orange and the walls are covered with sports pix but I came for dinner not the show. The hamburger & fries at the lunch counter were absolutely right on. Sitting side by side with the families and travellers it was great. If you want white table clothes, or cuisine, keep driving. If you want hamburgers and milkshakes in a classic lunch counter atmo you wouldn't go wrong by stopping here. Cheers...Todd

Mac's is a Clemson tradition. The burgers are great. The fries wonderful. The Clemson sport history that lines the walls is legendary. Get a place at the counter and have a true Clemson experience.
