Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Am a rather big fan of this place. Spartan, fast service. No pomp or circumstance here... just decent food at a decent price. Carnitas any way you like em. I opted for the Quesadillas version. Local crowd and a great escape from the rat race outside. SaleebScore: Food: 8.5/10; Service: 9/10; Value: 10/10. If there was a way to give this place a 4.5 star rating I would.

I'm definitely a fan. I loved their spicy chicken tortilla soup, although I'd ad a bit of a kick next time b/c it really wasn't spicy, but it was VERY tasty. Margarita's were very tasty, nice size, made of fresh ingredients and very reasonably priced. Between my husband and I we tried 5 different tacos and loved everyone of them. Grilled shrimp was my favorite. The tacos were very fresh and much more packed than any other taco I've had in the area. Their free salsa and chips were also some of the best. Both very fresh and the salsa had a nice kick to it. We were a little surprised by the set up. You go to the bar to order, no table service, and food will be delivered. It didn't quite make sense b/c there were so many people working, but no biggie. We will definitely be going back on a regular basis!

Always Fresh! You can taste every handmade morsel from the salsa to the margarita salt. There is genuine art in this amazing tex Mex. I wake up crazing it some days. Interesting concept unless you sit at or in the bar area. You place your order at the bar and they bring it to you. A little unique but it works. Probably keeps you from having to many yet margaritas. Try peach mango. Shrimp nachos are my go to. Piled high with fresh sautéed shrimp retried beans pico and cream and Guacamole. Enough to share.

I'm sorry to be saying this but Zia has been slipping. Only reason I am at (3) stars is due to the strength of their quesadillas. Not much else worth getting here. Often, you'll see a line nearly out the door. But for what? The last few experiences I have had were more on the (2) star level. Most recently I ordered one of their tortas and it was terrible. Their rendition of pastor, if that is even what I received, was a joke - especially at the $10 price tag. I couldn't even tell if it was pork or something else. Plop that on a loaf of bead with bagged shredded iceberg and tomato and I call that a sorry excuse for a torta. They still put together a nice quesadilla as well as chips/dips but I have to express my current disappointment.

Cute. Great location but terrible attitude, decent food but don't ever look in the kitchen if you like this place. You won't ever go back . Filthy. Try Crust next door. Clean and friendly , unlike Zias
(2)Katie K.
The food is great. Drinks and drink specials are good. Service is less than mediocre. We asked for salsa multiple times. We also asked if some tables could be cleared so we could sit down on the patio, and the response was "I am sure they will get to it when they can". It took them about 30 to 40 minutes to clear off those dirty tables. This was all around 2:30pm. Maybe they are under staffed?
(3)Lily H.
Zia Taqueria is a good standard place for a quick meal. Prices are standard. I've been here a couple times. This time I had the pastor nachos. The chips were individual piled with meat and cheese (instead of being in one big hill of stuff) with a cup of sour cream and scoop of guac to add yourself. Pretty good!

Ate here for the first time this weekend, even though I've lived in Charleston for 7+ years. Can't believe I waited so long! I really enjoyed my meal - the enchilada platter with red and green chile sauce and rice and black beans on the side. Everything was very fresh and the portion sizes were just right. The chile sauces were flawless: the green sauce started out with the familiar tangy-ness of Hatch chiles and finished with that unmistakable sinus-clearing heat, and the red sauce had a more understated, smooth, smoky flavor that was a nice contrast to the green. I spent a few days in southern New Mexico earlier this summer, and my meal at Zia brought back some very fond memories of meals in Las Cruces, Hatch, and Truth or Consequences. So glad there's a place here in Charleston that will satisfy my cravings for good Tex Mex/New Mexican style food!

Came here with boyfriend and 3 kiddos after a water festival at the JICP. That being said - I was a little leery when we walked up to the restaurant. The seating outside seems to be smacked jammed together. They even have a few tables on the SIDE of the building, between another building. There is NO view there. Just the parking lot. wish now I had taken a pic of it, cause it was weird. anyhoo.... inside, there are tables in one area, and then there is the bar area. Its a little confusing as to how to get 1) service and 2) food at this place. We sat at the hightops in the bar area (there are 2-3 tables in this area), one of the servers told us its the only place besides the actual bar seating that will come and take your order and serve you. ???? DO what now??? Yes the bartender is also the server (not unusual) but only for 3 tables and the bar. But if you sit anywhere else - you have to go to the bar and order your food. You are then given a number and they will wither call it out, or deliver it to your table. There doesnt seem to be a lot of consistency on how they want to do this..... again a little confusing, but like always .... lets get to the FOOD AND DRINKS !!!! Ok. hands down - the best screwdriver slushie I have ever had. That is the Sunday special. Wow. Bf and I loved it so much, we had 2!! and wowzers are they a little teensy bit on the strong side - so beware!!! The do have a kids menu - which was great - they have a really good mix of stuff to choose from on there as well. And the portions were generous for a kids plate. Definitely happiness and smiles there. The rest of us ordered from the regular menu, which was a little overwhelming with all the awesome choices!! We had the steak tacos and the enchiladas. Its hard to please the picky eaters in the group - but even they were all over it, and loved every bite!!!
(4)Becky T.
Has potential quality seemed good but seasoning was VERY lacking. Tried the torta portobella no seasoning on the mushroom. Maybe with meat would have been better. Green hatch chili stew bland just corn and pepper. Black beans are just that zero seasoning. Pork and beef enchiladas were ok pork was the better of the two. Tres leches looked like a piece of sheet cake from Costco they dipped the bottom of in some watered down condensed milk. We dropped $60 for lunch for that kind of price I expect way better. Doubt we'll be back.
(2)Veronica S.
The food is good. The service subpar. Who wants to go to a restaurant and be ignored,Place your order at the bar, told to goto the counter for refills, and be told that crema and sour cream are not the same? News flash , ill informed cashier, it's the same dang thing!!! I'm Hispanic, I would know. Self service may be ok for the hipsters but for the adults it's just annoying. If I'm forking out the Mula ( slang for $$$ in Español) I want the service. Otherwise I'd go to a taco truck! Here is my tip since I didn't leave one, use those dudes walking around delivering the food as actual full functional waiters. In conclusion, service goes a long way.- Will not return. I can make my own tacos at home and service myself
(3)Meredith V.
It actually took me a while to warm up to Zia. The boyfriend is a huge fan of the enchiladas & always orders one smothered with salsa verde and the other with New Mexico red chile sauce. I took his lead and ordered the same once & couldn't cope with the level of spicy, but I am definitely a self-admitted wuss when it comes to spiciness. Over the next few visits with friends, I tried a few other dishes, still not finding the perfect entree to call me back. And then I finally did. Now I get a portabella mushroom taco with delicious crema and the amazingly flavorful shrimp taco. Man, is it good! The shrimp sauteed in white wine really kicks the flavor up a notch. Having found my perfect match, I can't wait to go back.
(4)Jackie S.
The shrimp tacos are awesome. The grilled fish tacos are good and have just enough heat. Try a bottle of Ocukt also... Very refreshing with a hint of agave.
(3)C.D H.
Always happy at Zia. Food is always amazing. Our Sunday ritual are frozen screwdrivers and hip hop bbq radio here!!
(5)Perry F.
Great food. Great drinks. Service is usually spot on if you are sitting in the bar or bar tables. Highly recommend this place to others.
(5)Francesca D.
Perfect place for a quick, easy and delicious meal. I've never had a bad meal here! Tacos are small but allows for you to try two. Portobello quesadilla is so delicious, get the extra guacamole. And my new favorite is the salad believe it or not. It rocks with the fish or shrimp and the balsamic pepper dressing.. Killer and a healthier option. I love the palapa mas but during holidays the cider margarita is a must! The only reason why it didn't get 5 stars is because you can't have a server close out a tab and sometimes it's so loud you can't hear the conversation at your table. But, for yummy consistent food and service you can't beat it!
(4)Harold W.
This is one of the best places outside of LA to get fish tacos. I usually get The baja fish taco on flour tortilla. You do get the option of grilled or fried. Another one of my favorites is the beef boracca torts sandwich. Expect to either share with someone or take home leftovers. The staff here is friendly as always but there is anew odd rule they have that has always baffled me. There are 3 tall tables and the bar where you can get full service. All the other tables you have to order at the bar and pay at the bar but they do bring out your food. They are very strict about this rule. Oh, don't try to hold a table while someone else is paying. I've been called out for doing just that when they were busy. Otherwise once I got over this odd rule it was an enjoyable pace to go for lunch or dinner.

Been to Zia 3 times now in the last few weeks and thanks to a Yelp review I saw found out about their Monday night $2.50 Fish Tacos. So the wife and I stopped by this week for a Mexican beer, their FREE chips and salsa, and 2 Fish Tacos each. Barely missed happy hour on the beer but still a cold beer with fresh chips and salsa was a must. Their salsa is just fantastic. We love it more each time. Obviously homemade as it is not always the same but always good. We had both kinds of fish tacos and I really expected to like the breaded fish ones better with slaw but I have to say that the other one had lettuce and some special sauce which I am now just addicted to. It was divine! I can't wait for next Monday! Hoping to make this a regular stop. Cypress Mondays used to be our favorite deal night but I think this is better and less of a crowd. $5 for 2 tacos, a $3 beer and FREE chips and salsa. Hard to beat that deal. Don't know if you can tell but I like Free chips and salsa and have stopped frequenting any establishment that dares to charge for this. So, thanks Zia, will be back and often!
(5)Jessica M.
Best place ever! Staff are like nowhere else in town there's like your best friends and hanging there is like hanging in your living room!
(5)Dave C.
Zia, I'm sorry. I have a confession to make. Last night I cheated on you. I know Mondays are supposed to be OUR day...but I thought I wanted a change...something different. I was wrong. SO WRONG. I will never stray from you (or $2.50 fish taco Mondays) ever again. I've learned my lesson and I hope you forgive me. See you next week? I'll make it up to you I swear. Now that THAT'S off my chest, I have to say that I have been coming to Zia pretty consistently on Mondays for about two years. They have yet to disappoint me. The staff is awesome and I really enjoy looking forward to their delicious fish tacos to start my weeks off right. Even though I have to drive a few extra miles to get there, I'm always happy to do it. Protip: For the grilled fish tacos, they have some serious hidden spice that doesn't hit you right away but might later in the evening or early the next morning. I can eat one and be just fine, but if I get two I pay the price. For that reason, I usually get two Baja and one grilled. You have been warned.
(5)Tyler S.
I'm becoming a bigger fan of Zia every time I visit. It's easy to reach and is just a short drive from the peninsula. Parking can be a little tricky on busy nights, but trust me. It's worth it. I've tried a few different tacos, but my favorite is definitely the sautéed shrimp taco. This baby is savory with a touch of sweetness, but still light and refreshing. I love the contrast between the hot and tender shrimp and the cool crisp red cabbage, and that sauce is banging! I also have no complaints about the salsa. Zia also has one of the best things to cool down on hot days. You will be hard put to find a more refreshing beverage than their fresh mint lemonade. I could drink a gallon of that stuff. It looks like I need to start making it out on Mondays for that two-fiddy-taco deal. See you soon Zia.
(5)Michelle S.
The salsa is like crack, I just can't get enough of it! I am not a margarita fan but I hear they are some of the best here. I enjoy the dos equis on tap. They have a salad that is delish and I also love the enchiladas. The line can get long when ordering but luckily when someone comes around to refill your salsa they will also bring you another drink on your tab. So tip a little extra for this nice occurrences.
(5)Kelly B.
Delish! This place is a fast, easy, walk up to order Mexican option. It's not so pleasant when it's busy, because it's a smaller place and can get very loud and crowded feeling, but otherwise it's a wonderful experience. You must try the portabella mushroom taco or quesadilla-it is by far the most savory treat they offer and I have been many times. They also offer free chips and salsa, and the staff is always very helpful and friendly. Enjoy!
(4)Joe M.
Zia Taqueria Pork or Chicken taco's are the best I have ever eaten. Try the corn tortillas because they are wonderful. I have been here (3) times and the taco's are so excellent, I can't seem to bring myself to order something else. I tried the fish taco's but I have had better in Las Vegas and San Diego but they are very good. The price is definitely right! Don't miss this tremendous fare.
(5)Eric M.
Had the chorizo and egg tacos, which were mucho mucho bien. The place is a little small cause the line actually can take up 20% off the indoor room. The sidewalk is nice if you're lucky enough. The bar is the best bet since you get bar service and a seat with some room. The food is good, location is good, just need more comgirt room.
(4)Casey W.
Great food, good service. I'm a vegetarian and it has been a long time since I have found a good vegetarian torta. The seating is not the most convenient, especially with children. It feels cramped and crowded And the space is awkward. I would recommend going during non peak times
(4)Molly M.
FINALLYYYYYY!!!! I was honestly considering moving back to Ca for the lack of good Mexican food in Charleston. This place is soooooooo good. Sorry, Taco boy and Santis. Those were my old go-to's until I found Zia. Fish tacos- amazing. Just order them. Don't ask questions. Guac- fresh and zesty. Great salsa! Oh and they made me a Modelo with a margarita floater. Love this spot and the service is great!!!
(5)Georgia R.
Best salsa ever! The food is a little pricey, but flavor is definitely there. Outdoor space is my favorite spot to enjoy it.
(4)Jessica S.
I love trying out different places! Went here with my friend after leaving the beach, and she recommend this place. Although it was my first time going here, I really feel this restaurant is probably the best Mexican restaurant around that area. The Baja fish taco which I order with fried and it was the perfect! Great and very friendly staff here. Overall it was another great experience in Charleston! I'll be back!
(4)Christi T.
I was a bit taken aback by the price after order 2 iced teas, guacamole, and two tortas but the fresh guacamole and salsa alone eased my mind! The tortas as great as well! I had the chicken while my husband had the carne asada and while both were prepared well and very flavorful I think I will be ordering the carne asada next time! The meat was seasoned so well and was so tender I'll have to have one of my own! Great place! Service was fast and friendly as well.
(4)Tracy G.
Charleston isn't a place that is known for great Mexican food but I'm happy to say that I'm discovering more and more places that are doing it right, Zia Taqueria being one of them! Located in the same strip mall area as the Terrace Theater I expect that they can get pretty busy. We were there on a Sunday morning when they first opened up so there were plenty of seating options. You order at the bar and then find a table. There isn't much to the decor but what they do have is tasteful and interesting, especially some cool wall art. There were 4 of us so we each opted to get 4 different things so we could share. I had a carnitas taco and an al pastor taco with a side of their pinto beans. The taco's were street style, just the way I like them, but with a little flair. I was very pleased that neither taco came out exceptionally greasy which seems to be the norm in places around here. Al pastor had a bit of pineapple in it and was very good but I preferred the very traditional carnitas taco a little more. The beans were AWESOME! Whole pinto beans with onion, garlic, pork and cilantro---I could eat these beans all day. My companions had: a carne asada torta (a steak sandwich), a carne asada quesadilla, a cheese enchilada and a cup of tortilla soup. Everything was super tasty but the standouts were the tortilla soup and the enchilada sauce. We also ordered a side of queso to go along with our chips and salsa. It was unique in the fact that it had what tasted like sweet chili's in it. Definitely different than most places but I can see it not being a favorite for all. Have I mentioned how good the beans were? They were so good! I might have a new favorite spot on James Island now.
(4)Sarah J.
Love Zia! Awesome margaritas. The fish and al pastor tacos are the best in town.
(4)Cassie S.
I'm laying in bed and can't sleep because all I can think about is the fact that I'll be able to have Zia Taqueria in less than 1 week! I moved to MD a little over a year ago and I miss this spot more than anything! There grilled fish tacos are unlike any fish taco I've ever had (and believe me I've tried a wide assortment) with just the right amount of heat. I adore spicy. I can't find the words to describe my love for this taco. If spicy isn't your thing, go for the Baja fish which has an incredible sweeter sauce. The salsa brings tears to my eyes, from the fresh taste to the bursting spicy flavor. I cannot get enough. Want more for your dipping pleasure, opt for the guacamole! Tastes like they just cut open the avocado to order. The quesadillas: perfectly proportioned with a unique blend of pickled veggies on the side. The nachos: individually prepared into the ultimate bites, each and every one. Oh man, the enchiladas! If your starving go for the platter and you will be more than satisfied. Going healthy? Their salads will surprise you! The food here is amazing, no matter what you order...and it doesn't stop there. Try out their margaritas! The atmosphere is casual with live music at certain times. Great friendly neighborhood restaurant that I wish I could still take advantage of! If your in the Charleston area, don't miss out!
(5)Nay B.
Yummy! We eat here at least once a week. Grilled fish tacos are the bomb.com when they are not too spicy. Also can't go wrong with a margarita and enchiladas with the salsa verde and a side of the rice. They also do a great job with tortas, but the al pastor recipe could could some help. Best salsa in Charleston. The staff is always friendly and on point.
(5)Cesar L.
Folks, if you want to try authentic Mexican food, you then need to try this place. Outstanding!!
(5)Amy L.
So, I will preface this by admitting I have only been here once. However, it was so good I consider that a serious fault on my part to be remedied ASAP. Now on to the good stuff... Okay, so when you walk into a Mexican restaurant, sandwiches probably aren't on your radar. Nor are portobello mushrooms. In fact, you are probably not in the mood for either. Disregard this inclination! The portobello torta (sandwich) was so delicious! It was very full and hard to pick up and eat, but well worth the inability to look dainty. Plus, the side of tradional roasted corn was so flavorful it was a shame they don't provide two. Or ten. If you've never had it with the sauce and (I believe cheese?) its a must try. And our service as prompt and the server happily refilled our salsa upon request. Its not fancy, but it is delicious. Give the torta a chance the woman taking orders recommended them over everything on the menu and I have no doubt she steered us in the right direction. My dining companion was a little put out they don't have burritos on the menu, but I found the sandwiches a fair trade for the lack of burritos. You can find a burrito anywhere. A torta? A rare gem!
(5)Jenny A.
Great mexican food...the chips and salsa are my favorite in town. We really like to sit at the bar seats so we can relax with table service. Happy hour margaritas are a great deal!
(5)Keith H.
I have patronized this establishment MANY times, and it is excellent. Aside from the food (which is great), the way the service is setup is very cool, it allows you to order and pay first, then take off whenever you are done. It is very laid back, and you never really have to wait for a server or wait for a check at the end of the meal; just get up and go (although, you will probably want to just stay and keep eating). Along this same line, you can get up and get your own water, hot sauce, silverware, etc. whenever you want/need; no hassle. The food is very tasty and I have never had a bad meal there. Torta's are great, but tons of bread. Taco's are very good as well, and you order a la carte style - so you can choose as many different tacos as you like. The platter's are HUGE - so bring an APPETITE if you're going to tackle that. The "Nachos" are not traditional American fare. They are a single layer of 10-15 chips, and each chips is covered in the listed ingredients. They are NOT like a piled mound of chips and toppings like you find at a sports bar. VALENTINA is one of the best parts of ZIA. If you haven't had it, it's a game-changer. Valentina is a salsa picante, or Mexican hot sauce from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico (Western Mexico). Very unique and amazing, and they just have bottles out for you to use! In conclusion, this is a great, laid back Mexi-merican experience. It is a GREAT option to stop before/after the Terrace Theater, Pour House, or on your way to/from the beach. Also, great for after a good workout or run; replace those salts!
(4)Chris Raymond H.
Great local Mexican place to grab a quick bite. I would say this place is worth a shot. Try the Carne Asada!
(4)Ryan M.
Pretty cool spot to hang out and get a drink. It's very casual. Servers do not come to your table, rather you make your order at the bar and it gets delivered to you. As a vegetarian I got the portobello torta. It was pretty tasty, and I would've loved it if I liked mushrooms more. The bread was excellent!
(3)Owen L.
I wish I had more time to write a raving review of this place. The ingredients are fresh. The guacamole is perfect. The tacos are the best I've had in this city and the way they run the restaurant is a breath of fresh air. Instead of having a single waiter, we ordered our food up front and got it from other servers. Overall we were helped by 3 different people. Because of this setup, it took no time at all to get our food. No one was competing for our tips since you pay at the counter. The atmosphere is alive with music and it fits right in with crust, terrace theatre, and the wine bar. This place is worth a visit. Maybe several if you're here for a while.

Amazing. I've only been in town a week and have eaten there 5 times!! I love mexican food and try it everywhere I go since there isn't really any good mexican food where I live in Virginia. I didn't see any Mexicans working at Zia, but the food is as good as what you'd get in southern California or Texas (which is greatly above average on the east coast!). Margaritas: Excellent. Not too sweet; tastes like fresh sour mix. Generous with the tequila. Salsa: Excellent. Wish I could get a 55 gallon drum to take home with me Chips: Good, but it's hard to mess that up I've really only had a few variations of the same entree: the plato mexicano. Basically a meat of your choice with tortillas and all the fixings and two sides. Rice is really good. Meatwise, the carne asada is good and and the grilled fish is excellent. Don't let the self service fool you. You have to order your food at the bar, but aside from that it's full service....better service than many places I've been I might add. Nice outdoor space. I sat there on 90+ degree days and didn't even feel hot with the fans and my margarita.
(5)Raquel H.
Love this place. Fresh, fast and flavorful. Order at the counter and your food is brought to your table. My family recently moved to Mt. Pleasant and it's well worth the drive! Definitely our "go to" Mexican restaurant. I always order the chicken enchiladas and they are consistently delicious! My husband usually orders soft tacos and is equally pleased. Now I just need them to open a second location in Mt. Pleasant!
(5)Michael T.
Visited recently and I think they have dropped a level in my opinion. Not very flavorful or tasty. Kind of bland. Fun place for drinks though.
(2)Ali L.
Obsessed. $3 margaritas during happy hour and $2.50 fish tacos on Monday nights. Best taco in town. You can sit at the bar or the three tables next to the bar for full service, or you can get counter and some table service anywhere else. Super friendly staff, free chips, awesome food and drinks. Also a nice patio.
(5)Mark L.
Hip Mexican with a nice blend of hipsters, families and friends. This is restaurant and bar that has character. The bar staff and wait staff all have unique looks and personalities and they are very welcoming. The food is quality. If you want a slightly upper quality Mexican food and drink experience with great people watching, this is the place. There is outdoor seating for the pet lover in all of us. Come for a drink, chips and queso or a taco.
(4)Justin F.
This place is hands down the best Mexican food west of the Ashley. My wife and I frequent Zia's when we just don't feel like going downtown for a bite. Tacos are delicious and always freshly made. Salsa has just the right amount of heat. Great for gluten sensitive individuals as corn and flour options exist. I'm the type that can't eat corn, we're so rare that we don't even have a name yet (other than weird). They even fry up some flour tortillas for me for the chips and salsa...amazing and should be added to the menu. Margaritas are some of the best in Chs. Right up there with Santis and others. I would consider this a more local spot rather than touristy...always a great thing in the summer when you're craving a margarita and don't want to deal with tourists.
(5)Lisa S.
Delicious, fresh Mexican food. Nachos are my favorite but I know the fish tacos are quite popular. Very clean restaurant with friendly staff. Oh, and they have the best margaritas!!
(5)Andrea M.
I don't know why I don't come here more often! The food is worth the frustration of parking there. We sat at the bar this time. Love the atmosphere! Margaritas are good, and the guy next to us had chicken nachos which looked delicious! That will be my next choice
(4)Judy S.
Never once have I left Zia without feeling satisfied on every dining experience level. They do what they do without pretense, and it shows. Asking me to decide if I like their tortas or tacos better is an impossible task... normally I decide based on how hungry I am, because the torta is enormous. Split a torta with a friend and get a taco on the side. You don't want to leave this place without trying those savory sandwiches heaped with stewed meat, slices of fresh avocado, and layer upon layer of deliciously spicy flavors. The grilled corn, if you still have room, should not be overlooked because it adds a crunchy texture to the sandwich that really completes the story. Monday nights they have $2.50 fish tacos (choose grilled or fried), which is a ridiculous deal because these things are legendary. Don't make the mistake I usually do of wolfing down chips and salsa before the main meal arrives. They have wonderful table salsa that your waiter will happily replenish as you bottom out the serving dish time and time again... I make sure to have some ready for when my food comes, because I douse everything in that salsa and I would take a bath in it later if I could. Speaking of the waiters, I have always enjoyed my interactions with all the staff at Zia. Considering that you pay and tip at the register, management must be treating them right! They always seem happy, hardworking, and attentive even though they aren't expecting any extra gratuity, although by the end of my meal I am definitely inclined to leave some.

For starters - the guacamole was fresh and quite flavorful. It is served with tortilla chips and was amazing. I orders the grilled fish plate. It comes with 3 tortillas ( corn or flour) and 2 sides. I chose the slaw and rice. Ehh - they were okay. Nothing to write home about with the sides. However, the fish was quite tasty. Bold flavor. This meal along with a cold Dos Equis made my tummy very happy. Sat outside and enjoyed the breeze! Cool atmosphere. Nice and friendly staff. When you go inside you order your meal or drinks at the bar and then they will bring the meal out to your table.

Solid fresh Mexican food. We wanted a family friendly and affordable dinner for our vacation. You need to order at the bar and then you will get a number and will be served at your table. We ordered a variety of tacos...chicken, carne asada, fish and barbacoa. Everything was fresh and good. One of our kids found the chicken to be spicy, but was happy with the barbacoa. Guacamole was fresh and simply prepared. Oh and you can't beat $5 margaritas....after all the $10 cocktails we saw around town, it was refreshing to save some cash.

Second time this week for us. Grilled fish tacos and the off menu chicken tacos. Pollo verde. Sit at bar table for best service. Note to owners....serve local craft beers.
(5)Drew E.
Very good tacos! Gets busy on weekend nights due to its location and proximity to The Terrace but solid food!
(4)Anh-Chi R.
The food was decent, but our server (Katherine) was horrible. If you're at your place of work, then please do a good job. Your customers don't need to hear that you've been up since 5:30 am as an excuse for the poor service. She didn't get our order right, she was socializing for long periods of time with another table while all of our drinks were empty, and she was very unapologetic about the delays. She came to the table to take our order, then said, "oh be right back" right as we were ordering, and disappeared to serve another table. Unprofessional and discourteous. We won't be back.

Best taqueria style taco's in all of Charleston hands down. Trust me, I've tried them all and ZIA pretty much blows the rest away. On top of that the house salsa is freaking ridiculously good, it's absurd. I told my wife I'd be willing to get a part time job here just for their salsa and Barbacoa recipe. The best taco's and XX Amber on draft, you can't go wrong.

I've got a serious Zia addiction going on right now. It's hard not to give most mexican joints a good review because the food is almost universally appealing to omnivores and vegetarians alike. Zia really steps up the non-meat options though, which is a plus even though I am not a vegetarian. I really love that they offer tortas! It is my favorite thing to get at taco carts where you usually get really authentic options. The atmosphere is very chill and you order at the register and they bring the food out to you. I think this helps keep the service snappy. A word of warning, Zia is next to the Terrace independent theatre and it can get packed before an evening showing on the weekend, so pretty much every weekend its a bit of a wait even to get to the register to order, not to mention snagging a table. The bartenders are really knowledgeable and efficient. Try a margarita with a GranMa floater, it is excellente! Prices are a little on the steep side and we never get out of there for less than $30 for two people (not including drinks), but I am willing to pay for great, fresh, quality food.

Just a little heads-up that this place barely garnered a 'B' rating at their last inspection by the Department of Health. I ate lunch buffet there one time (pretty bad) and then came across their health department rating. Hopefully they'll get their score back up into the mid-90's--and find a new manager and foodservice professional.

So, I've had this yelp account for about 7 years now and never dared to review any of the many places I venture to shove food into my mouth UNTIL ZIA'S TONIGHT. Ay dios mio you guys, I really cannot even with this place. Flavor explosions of the rare kind took place in my mouth. First of all, the salsa. Second of all, the queso. Third of all, the "pastor" and the grilled fish tacos. You might be tempted to order the "baja" by your friend who frequents the joint and thinks it's "dank", but please resist this urge. Go with the grilled fish and thank me when you have sweet dreams of the cilantro jalapeño sauce. That's all.
(5)Chelle R.
I haven't eaten there, but I did have a pretty good Screwdriver there. I'm a fan because what I saw look like authentic Mexican food. The East coast does not do Mexican food very well.
(4)Rhonada W.
Mmm... who doesn't love Mexican food? Zia has a cool atmosphere with consistently great food. Their queso is so yummy. The tacos are delicious. The only down side is the way that they handle orders. You have to walk up and order, and then pray a table is available, unless you sit at the bar or surrounding tables. Sometimes can be really busy and you have to stand to eat! Other than that... gold star.

This place. Jesus Christ. This place. I normally hate Mexican. It's full of cheese and fat, usually involving cat meat and beans as well, and damn, after I eat Mexican, I usually have a Mexican hangover that lasts a day where I have the most unpleasant bowel movements, the kind that really burn and make your stomach growl beforehand with hot gas. Not pleasant. I'll leave it at that. But then I went to Zia's and it was like that changed, like meeting a girl that's pleasant, charming and fun to be around when your last girlfriend spent the majority of her time whining about things that don't really matter. There are a few reasons why I like Zia's so much. Hear me out. First, they have the best salsa in charleston as voted on by me, and it's absolutely free, which should get the juices flowing of any AMERICAN. Second, all their servers wear plaid and have beards, which means they must serve PBR, the best beer, on top of their wonderful margaritas. And finally, garbacho beans. Zia's gets my coveted 5 star rating, usually reserved for places like Cookout, because of all the things above. Go there over all Mexican places in town if you want to avoid Mexican hangovers. If you like the hangover feeling, then god bless you. But I find my taste is best, so whoever reads this, just go with it and stop asking questions.

It took me an hour to go the last two miles of my trip. Welcome to Charleston! A gigantic margarita (frozen, with salt) for $5 on Zia's patio with one of my closest friends was exactly what I needed to melt the tension away. The chips were hot and the salsa was pico de gallo style, brought to your table after placing your order at the counter. My salad was not particularly Tex/Mex, but it was fresh and big, served with some yummy roasted corn and several large, plump shrimp. If in Charleston again, I hope to skip the traffic, but I won't skip a margarita at Zia.
(4)Ashton G.
Zia is a welcome relief from your standard Mexican restaurant. From the tortas to the tacos, everything on the menu is good. My favorite meat options are the pastor and the pollo verde (not on the menu but they always have it), which are both always phenomenal. The portabello is also great, if you're looking for a vegetarian option. Not a big fan of their fish tacos, but other than that most everything on the menu is good. The borracho beans and street corn make for delicious sides that keep me coming back.

I've been here several times and the food is very good. I'm a big fan of their tortas. Ambience inside is nice. Not a very big place but definitely nicer than your typical Mexican place. Margaritas are excellent and they don't skimp on the tequila. My one big qualm with this place, the reason I'm giving them 3 stars and not 4, is the way their service is set up. They don't do waiter service outside of the small area next to the bar. You place your order and they give you a number to put on your table and they bring the food out to you. That by itself is fine. The problem is, they don't have a hostess stand or any stand where you order food or pick up take-out. Everything is done at the bar, which is relatively small. This means that the bartenders are responsible for taking all of the food orders from outside the small bar area, serving drink refills to people who are dining in (if you're not in the waiter service area, you have to walk to the bar and get drinks yourself), ringing out take out orders, AND working the bar at the same time. People like to sit at the bar and eat meals there so it'll often be full. There are only 2 bartenders behind the bar, and at the narrow end of the bar there is a register. This is where everything gets done. You're dining in and need more drinks? You go here. Getting take out? You go here. Placing a food order? You go here. So all of these people get stuck in one line together. The line has been almost out the door several times I've been there and it's just very frustrating. I can't imagine who decided that it would be a good idea to run everything through through the narrow face of the bar with only 2 people working behind it. It's just a really stupid way to operate.

Great little restaurant. My husband and I stopped in to get a quick bite and we're we pleasantly surprised. I order 2 carne asada tacos and my husband ordered the barbacoa platter. Both were extremely tasty and spicy. We will definitely be back. The only drawbacks for us was the lighting, which was way to dark that we had to use our phone flashlight to read it (we weren't the only ones) and the background music was so loud we almost had to yell at each other.
(4)Grace N.
My go-to James Island and Mexican restaurant. Great for a drink or food. My favorites are the chicken enchilada, tortilla soup, pastor tacos, taquitos, nachos and chicken or portabello quesadilla. The corn and borracho beans are awesome sides. Yummy margaritas and frozen screwdrivers on Sunday.
(5)E. B.
LOVE this place! Casual atmosphere with really really great food!
(5)Kats T.
Everything we had was great, but the fish tacos were particularly outstanding. The only thing I'd change is to add a bit more heat to the guacamole. Good margaritas too.
(4)Doug W.
Man, this place has gone down hill. I hadn't been there in over a year. Just went back. Terrible food and drinks. Save money and go to Barberito's across the street!
(2)Lawrence C.
The fish taco was spot on but they brought me a beef taco that was bland and kinda dry.
(2)Glenn V.
My work has me scurrying around to different locations, yet James Island is not normally on the list for the most part. But when I am inn the area of and its anywhere near the lunch/dinner hour, I head to Zia Taqueria. This cute little restaurant has great margaritas and very traditional TexMex style of preparing the dishes and if you.msit at the bar, you can peer in the kitchen a bit. Erin was the bartender there when I was more frequent with my visits, as she was great, DENVER, YOU ALL ARE LUCKY TO HAVE HER. The homemade sauces are great, carne asada is my favorite, but you just cant miss with a poor choice here at Zia.' The nachos are loaded with black beans and a Mexican Monterey Jack cheese, yummy. There is outside eating area, not much to see other than a parking lot, but the inside is very cozy and charming. Great Food at very reasonable prices.
(4)Colleen J.
$2.50 Fish tacos on Mondays are my weakness. Otherwise, I'm not in love with their prices on plates and whatnot - but it's fresh and delish so I'll pay. Always great service. Love Zia's bigtime. nom, Colleen
(4)Jerry S.
If youre looking for a good fish taco, Zia is a very competent restaurant. The fish tacos are quite good, and you have a voice of fried or grilled. Need to back to try other things.
(4)Andrew S.
I have been here on several occasions, whether it be to visit to the poor house or friends living down the street. The food is definitely not what you would typically think of as Mexican, nor do I think that's what they are going for. It's more like Cali-Mex with a hint of Southern Mexico. I will tell you this, the Portobello mushrooms are a must, especially on the nachos where they individually place each component to make every bite rock your face. Another tip is that on Monday's they offer $2.50 fish tacos, if I'm not mistaken. There are two types and both are very tasty. Definitely give the tempura battered fish a try, it's well worth it as well. From what I understand there are good specials most days, worth giving them a call or checking out online before you get there.

It was the kind of meal you know you should stop eating, but it's so good you just can't... A friend of ours who has never steered us wrong on restaurants (Dean Rommes, Charleston Security Systems), mentioned that Zia Taqueria is the place to go for great Mexican Food, so off we went. It was past lunch hour (after 2:00 p.m.), on a rainy Saturday afternoon. I have always believed that a good way to test the mettle of a restaurant is to go there when it's slow. During the busy lunch/dinner periods, things usually go well, since the restaurant is usually in a rhythm. But when it's slow - fewer employees, people are beginning to think about the end of the shift and starting to clean up, then things can slip. When we entered the restaurant we were a little confused about what to do. Do we wait for a hostess? Do we seat ourselves? And then we looked up and saw a small wall menu adjacent to the bar and a sign that told us to order there. There were seats at the bar open and we decided to sit there. It was still confusing. Was someone going to wait on us? We glanced around the restaurant, still uncertain. Small, not overly themed, with about 30 - 40 seats, plus the bar and an outside patio, light music played in the background.A very quiet atmosphere, but then again, we were hitting it at a rather slow time. The bartender came to take our order. It surprised me that there were no sparkling bottled water options, so I made due with soda water. I would normally have tried a margarita but we were heading to a Christmas party later that night. We started with a Chile con Queso. Before we could just about blink it was in front of us along with fresh salsa and chips. That was fast! The Queso was made with pepper jack cheese, red bell pepper, garlic and white wine (I'm stealing this from the menu, as I would never have remembered everything.) We could not wait to dig in. It was by far one of the best Queso dishes I have ever had (I lived in Dallas for many years and there are many great Mexican restaurants there...). Warm, smooth, colorful and it had a light kick to it. Nice. The only downside of our appetizer was our service at the bar. We never received any silverware, plates, napkins, etc. from our bartender. At this point I was still a little confused as to whether it was self serve or full service at the bar. The lack of service put me off a bit. We rustled up plates, etc. from a nearby condiment station. The service style continued to be confusing. I finally realized that if you place your order at the register you received a number and your lunch would be brought out to you. If you were seated at one of the high tops in the bar area or at the bar, the bartender would wait on you. No prob, we were too busy enjoying our appetizer. Although the bartender seemed to know some regulars, she became animated only when she spoke to her colleague that this was the last day-shift (thankfully), that she had until a week from Tuesday. We did ask her how long the restaurant had been opened, (2 yrs.), if she was one of the original hires (yes, there is very little front of the house turnover), and how business was (good, we're pretty busy, especially during the holidays), but otherwise, she didn't speak to us. Isn't she supposed to be paid for her wit and charm?? Guess I'm used to a bit more interaction from bartenders. Our lunch included a 10+++, super star, unbelievable, can't-say-enough-about-it sandwich and another item. Here's the scoop. But first, we had to ask for silverware to begin eating. Urgh. We ordered the Carne Asada (thinly sliced beef) Tortas Mexicanas. The menu description hardly does this sandwich any justice. It was served on fresh baked telera bread that had been toasted. It is topped with black beans, caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, avocado and cilantro jalapeno spread (again, a direct steal). PLUS... it is served with a small, grilled corn on the cob topped with melted butter and sprinkled with fresh, grated cheese. The sandwich is massive, easily the size of a small dinner plate. By the time I went to ask to try the corn, it was gone. All I kept hearing was, "Wow, this is something." Now, on to what I ordered for lunch. The carnitas quesadilla's presentation was just lovely, (ut oh, that's like telling someone they are about to go on a first date with they have a nice personality...), overstuffed and served on a fajita-like cast iron skillet. It was accompanied by "cream" (similar to sour cream only thinner), homemade guacamole and a very spicy jalapeno relish. It looked sensational. But alas, the pork inside the quesadilla was dry and not very warm. The cheese had melted nicely, but having the carnitas just luke warm took away from the meal, especially since it tasted great. It was however, the type of meal that you know you should stop eating, but just can't. I only ate 1/2 of my quesadilla, but it wasn't for lack of trying. We'll be back soon!

I like this place. It wasn't the best place in the world, but definitely satisfied me. We went for dinner and drinks and both were good. The frozen screwdriver was delicious. They seemed to have a heavy hand with us and pour our drinks decently strong, which was a plus. I got the nachos with carnitas. It was an interesting concept. They essentially make little tostadas. Each chip has meat and cheese on it. Its not a huge pile of chips with cheese and meat on top. But you do only end up with around thirteen chips. So its not huge, but its great to not have a dry chip. I loved the atmosphere and everyone was really nice. I would definitely return.

Well, according to Yelp, I'm some kind of 'bot who gives out too many five star ratings. But I don't really care! I can't give Zia's anything other than the highest rating one can give. First, the $5.00 house Margarita is DELICIOUS and out of this world. It's fresh, tasty and they don't skimp on the tequila. Also, their homemade lemonade (when it's too early for a Margarita . . .wait. . .did I just say "too early for a Margarita?) Chips are delicious and plentiful and the salsa is out of this world. I think *some* improvement can be made to the guac, though I'm not sure what it is. I usually end up squeezing a lime over it and adding a teeny more salt. . .but that's just my personal preference and probably barely worth mentioning! The tacos and tortas are all generously portioned and delicious. My go to lunch/dinner, however, has to be the nachos! Rather than a giant pile of chips that you have to struggle with to get a scoop of all of the ingredients on, these nachos are each individually portioned out with the toppings. So, if you order the chicken nacho, every, single, chip has the ingredients on it. For people used to the traditional "PILE O' NACHOS" from your local sports bar, it will, at first, appear to be a very skimpy portion. Halfway through, though, with your stomach getting fuller by the second, you realize that the serving couldn't be more perfect. I've never had bad service. Even with the odd (but AWESOME, in my opinion) way that one orders their food, the service is still great. The staff cruises by the tables, checking on chips and drink levels. My glass is never empty and my chip basket is always refilled if it needs to be. I love this place and can't say good enough things about it!
(5)Sam H.
Being a Texas boy, I am a self- admitted TexMex snob. Add to that 4 years in Phoenix with 24-hour homemade Sonoran style Mexican joints on every corner, and I'm tough customer when it comes to Mexican food. I've been in Charleston for 5 months and finally found a place that will definitely suffice to get me by until I can get home to DFW. Zia has a really interesting mix of some of the things I love about TexMex (individually made nachos, queso, grilled meats) and some of the great traditional Mexican touches (Pastor, street tacos, etc.). You won't find homemade tortillas or great salsa here, but everything we had was tasty and generously proportioned. You also can't beat their beer prices and margarita selection (though I didn't put those to the test yet).
(4)Trey S.
My second time here. Wanted to like it. But, the food just wasn't that good. Got two tacos (one steak & one pork). The pork was dry and flavorless. The steak was just not tasty. Maybe we'll come back sometime, but there are plenty of other places to try first.
(2)Nobody M.
Carne asada was not carne asada at all. (Carne asada is either grilled or cooked with dry heat.) Instead I received beef that had been sauteed in a tomato-based sauce. It looked good and, having lived in CA (and eaten plenty of times in Mexico), figured the good ol' boys from SC just had a different way of doing things. Unfortunately sometimes 'different' does not always mean 'improvement', as was the case here. Either that or they just don't know what Carne Asada is. Beans and slaw were decent, but the beef itself was inedible on its own.
(2)Mara H.
Got the Chicken Quesadilla. Was good but hoped for more flavor. A salsa/toppings bar-cilantro, onions, sauces, etc would make this place the best! They have good salsa and make good strong Margaritas. I will visit again and I am going to try one of their tortas and some queso dip. Good atmosphere, order at bar then sit down type deal. Cute place.
(3)Claire P.
I love Zia Taqueria. Kevin knows his stuff and it never seems to close. Don't miss the Barbacoa Nachos, the Pastor taco, or the pollo verde taco. Also, they typically have live music on Wednesdays. Great place to hang, yummy food.
(4)sara j.
Love the food. However, I JUST this evening had such a RUDE encounter with the bartender and another patron, that I'm not sure I can return. A girlfriend and I stopped in to get some chips and queso--something quick. My girlfriend very politely enquired of the bartender whether her daughter could sit on her lap at the bar while we got a quick snack. He was taken aback, responded curtly and then HAD THE NERVE to ask another bar patron what he thought? As if it was ANY of this patrons business. The patron responded negatively as well, so we left. The restaurant was packed and all we wanted was a quick snack for ourselves and her daughter. The nasty response was UNBELIEVABLE. IT was 630 pm, not an unreasonable time to look to feed a child in a public place. The patron, drunk and obviously and flagrantly "over involved", started mouthing off about how if we didn't like the answer we shouldn't have asked. At least we were aware that we should politely enquire, and this question had NOTHING to do with another patron, so why involve him at all? BAD PR, friends. I refer people to this place very frequently, and myself enjoy the food and atmosphere. Even IF it was an issue, it was EXTREMELY rudely handled for 2 people who just wanted to stop in for a quick carryover snack.
(1)J H.
Good stuff. Great break from the normal Mexican joint. Variety of different meats for tacos, mix and match. Great enchiladas and sauce as well. Picked jalapenos, yum.
(4)Amela R.
Zia's is open just about all the time, which is especially nice, since it's convenient to go there after a movie at the Terrace. My current favorite is the Fish salad (I like the buttermilk dressing) but all the tacos and quesidillas I've had have been tasty too, and all is reasonably priced. Good guac, and I like the freebie chips/salsa. Service is quick, inexpensive (unless you're getting to-go, then I was surprised to have a "catering fee" tacked on to my meal.) Indoor or outdoor seating. My carnivore friends like their pork dishes as well. If you don't want beer or soda or tea, try the lemonade.
(4)George B.
There was not anything in particular that blew me away at Zia's, but rather a culmination of all great things that made for an awesome and relaxing experience. Charleston's mexican scene is honestly a bit weak, with choices mainly being either the bit bland La Hacienda style dining, or the "hip" and over-priced "white-people-trying-to-make-tacos" setup of Taco Boy. Zia's stands out because of the relaxing atmosphere (you'd think sitting out by a crowded parking lot wouldn't be relaxing, but it works!), great food, tasty margaritas (albeit a little on the weak side), and pay-at-the-bar dining. I've already been here about 4 times this month and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon! P.S. Hey Zia's, I think that your Portabello Mushroom Taco is great, though strangely different, but it would be great if you could add a second, more traditional vegetarian taco option? Edit (6/5/13): I have honestly fallen in love with this place. Everything that I have tried on this menu has been delicious! And I HAVE to retract my statement about the margaritas, because the frozen margaritas are killer!
(5)Peonia E.
I like this place for their margaritas and their chips and salsa. I am not crazy that sometimes it's crowded and I have to wait in line, but what the hey, the people and staff are so nice. Ivy and Katrina are great bartenders and everyone is friendly and efficient. If I do get something to eat, it is almost ALWAYS a black bean quesa dia (did i spell that right?) They laugh at me because it is almost always the same thing but my friend Peter who goes there a lot always gets that and he's got me hooked. Damn Peter! Taco boy or Zia? Both are so similar but I think Zia is fresher and the owner and chef, can't think of his name but super cool guy, he's always there. That makes a difference.
(4)Michael M.
Yumm, catfish tacos were out of this world! The margaritas were tasty! and everything was real cheap! Go!
(4)Dorothy E.
WOW. I'm super impressed with this place. I've eaten here 3 times in 5 days and tried something new every time...only to be continually impressed. Every. Single. Time. The queso with chorizo (made in house)...best queso I've EVER had. Ive lived in TX for years so I've had my fair share of Mexican food. Guac is delicious too. Shrimp taco, barbacoa quesadilla and the soup...incredible. The torta was huge but I couldn't stop eating it. Don't skip the frozen screwdriver on Sundays. And the chorizo/egg taco...my friend is still trying to devise a way to ship them. :) do yourself a favor and go. I'll be dreaming about this food for months to come. And to top it off... Awesome tunes and ambiance.

I was skeptical about trying the Mexican fare in Charleston, being that I moved here from San Antonio. That being said, not only the best Mexican spot in Charleston, probably one of the best Mexican restaurants I have ever ate at. The food was amazing, the environment is chill and very relaxing, and the staff is great. My only negative would be the ordering system (you have to order at the bar) and it is a little on the small side. I went on a Monday, I wouldn't dare try it on a weekend. Rather than that, if you are in Charleston and want the best Mexican food in town check this place out. One of my top 5 in the city.
(4)Rebecca G.
Zia has the same kinds of tacos as another local joint, Taco Boy, but larger and with a bit less atmosphere. It's not the best Mexican food in town by any means (I still greatly prefer Taco Boy), but it's worth checking out if you're waiting for a movie at the Terrace (the food comes out quick). My family's favorites: fish taco and Mexican corn. As I said before, the atmosphere leaves a lot to be desired. There is a small "table service" section but Zia's overall ambiance is that of a take-out joint...the kind you would find in a college town. Unfortunately, on the day I went here, this place seemed to be the local meet-up point for bum parents in their 20s to talk and drink alcohol while they let their kids run all over the restaurant, out the door, and under the tables. It's not the restaurant's fault, I know, but it was very irritating to be surrounded by noisy kids. Tip: parking is very hard to find in the evenings because of the movie theater. Get there very early and be prepared not to find a place to park on Friday/Saturday night.
(3)Morgan S.
Went to Zia a couple weekends ago for the first time - don't know what I expected but this wasn't it. I get the concept - provide cheap, quality mexican and offset typical restaurant scene by ordering at the counter to cut down on waiter service. It works for the most part but it definitely gets crowded, which gets annoying, which affects your overall experience. Maybe that will pass once it isn't so "new" to people. Food itself was good but not great in my opinion. The salsa was a stand out for me but nothing else was. Margs are standard and my quesadilla was status quo. Based on the reputation being good - I'll give Zia another chance. Maybe go on a week night to avoid the crazy crowds getting a pre movie meal.
(3)Laura A.
I guess you could say I'm addicted. Perhaps it's the combination of paying at the counter, the very tasty salsa, and the respectable margaritas. No doubt the reasonable prices and large portions play a part. Whatever it is, I can't stop eating here! Twice in a week sometimes. My favorites are the enchilada with red sauce and the quesadilla, served with a trio of delicious add-ons including great guac, crema, and some kind of jalapeno relish that is making my mouth water right now. You may recognize the decor from short-lived Fez. Zia kept all the chic Moorish touches like stained glass lanterns and cutout wooden doorways, but added some festive Mexican paint colors and chotchke for good measure. It works! Service can be a little forgetful but is always accommodating. On a recent Friday night, my large party didn't count on Zia being quite so popular yet. We were awkwardly sharing a four-top until a kind waiter brought in an extra table and chairs for us from outside. As the line curling out the door can testify, Charleston needs more of these mid-price, great quality spots! If they flop, it won't be for lack of my dollars.
(4)Jerry L.
Love the food but the way service is set up is ridiculous. If you are sitting at a table you should have a server, not this ridiculous system where you order your drinks and food from the end of the bar and then pay for everything then. We were there on Friday night and it was very busy. After waiting in line to order food, getting our drinks and paying our bill we sat down with our group of nine, which we had to scavenge and put tables together ourselves to accommodate us, the food runners were just too busy. Our food came out in a reasonable amount of time and was really delicious. No problem with the food at all. We had finished out drinks and were ready for another round but since we had already paid out we had to order from the counter again. Fortunately there were two people working the counter that night so I didn't have to wait in the massive line again and was able to walk up to the other end of the bar and order and pay again. I mentioned this to one of our friends and she informed me that if you are planning on having more than one drink to let the counter person know and they will leave your tab open. This would have been very helpful as I would have been tipping after completing our experience instead of before we had even gotten anything. I really love the food here and it would be one of my favorites if they would just switch up the way they handle service. It may not keep me away from there completely but after seeing what it is like when it is really busy I will never plan on going with a group and will probably just make it an occasional lunch spot instead of going there for food and drinks. I would hope after all of the other complaints that the owners would consider changing the way service is handled but based on what I saw Friday it doesn't seem to scare people away so they probably will not.

1000X BETTER THAN TACO BOY! From the tacos to nachos, quesadillas to the tortilla soup, salads, platos and tortas, Zia is the real deal. Reviews of the counter service clearly do not understand that in Mexico, taco cantina's have counter service. The tables at near the bar are full service if you cannot walk 10 feet. The atmosphere is interesting and lively - often local musicans are playing. The staff is great and seems to have a low turn over rate. I've see all the same employees in there for the past 2 years or so. The food is awesome though. Kevin, the owner, does not cheapen his menu with low quality anything. Everything is precise and executed to a delicious degree. My personal favorite 2 dinners are: Baha Fish Taco, Rice, Tortilla Soup or the Portabella Mushroom Quesadilla with the awesome Creama, Guacamole and pickled carrots, garlic and onions (YUM.) Even the bar has the same execution as the food menu. The rim on the Bloody Mary is unmatched. The Zia Rita and the Grand Gold Margaritas are by far the best in all of Charleston. My personal favorite is the Mint Lemonade with a splash of soda water and vodka. Sunday's have frozen Screw Drivers. Needless to say, Zia is apart of my monthly food budget and I cannot live without it.

I experienced this restaurant yesterday around 12 noon as I joined several friends in the Charleston area. This was my first experience and over all it was a pleasant one. The restaurant is an excellent location on Maybank hwy and is easy to get to and leave from. The restaurant is located in a shopping center and there seemed to be plenty of parking in front of the shopping center. We ate together around noon and despite it being the peak of the lunch period there were not that many people in the restaurant. I am not sure if this is normal or not but it was nice that the restaurant was not packed which gave the atmosphere a less hectic feel. The restaurant was clean and the background music was in the background and not overbearing. One thing that I found a little bit irritating is that you order at the front counter and then you are expected to know that the getting of your utensils and condiments and drink refills. I was unsure of exactly what to order and the person behind the counter was polite and professional but I got the impression that he was a tad bit irritated with my inability to come to a quick decision. It was almost as if he expected me to make up my mind and order immediately. The person taking the order never inquired if I had ever been there either. Luckily for me one of the people in our party that was eating there gave me a heads up about the self serve routine. The food was excellent and I was highly pleased with it. Over all I had a good experience here and I will go back and recommend it to others.

Went on a limb and decided to patronize this joint. Must say, the salsa was absolutely incredible with hints of various types of habanero peppers. I furthered ventured on a ledge and got the catfish tacos (because I had never heard of such). The tacos were actually very tasty as cooked well. Service was decent but I'll definitely go back.

Wonderful - the best - texmex food! Try to come back as often as I can for the quesadilla and guacamole. Very friendly staff. Best for lunch or a laid back dinner.

absolutely love the mex food here! The best quesadilla I have ever had and everything else has been great too. Perfect guacamole as well!

Located on James Island this restaurant undoubtedly has one of the best locations in Charleston situated in the same shopping center as the venerable Terrace Theater, the coolest place to see art and indie films. Walking distance is Riverland Terrace, Charleston's oldest planned neighborhood that prides itself on a funk factor not found many other places. And across the street is The Pour House, highlighting local and national recording artists. Decor for this neighborhood hot spot spans between authentic Mexican and Moroccan (light fixtures are a holdover from the previous restaurant). But the food is simply put, spot on. The menu is not large, but there are options for all foodies. The Portabella mushroom does not stay in the dark here, it shows up beautifully in tacos and a quesadilla. The nachos are not a huge sticky mess to be battled with, they are neat, orderly and delicious. Arranged so precisely on the plate you might expect this appetizer to march in formation. Served with fresh jalapenos and carrots, house-pickled and a side of sauza crema and guacamole. Fish tacos are served a variety of styles, tempura and grilled. Tortilla soup is a nice alternative for those watching something other than the well-mixed crowd coming in. Patio dining is dog-friendly. Order at the bar and your food is delivered to you. Happy hour specials happen Monday through Friday, Fish tacos are the feature on Monday. A late night menu takes care of the munchies Thursday through Saturday. But Sunday funday might be the best time to visit, when you can order a Frozen Screwdriver (only day they commit the margarita machine to this delightful concoction), it is sublime. Excellent beer selection, and it is all cold. Fun margaritas. You will not be disappointed.

Zia, symbolizing the Sun, has definitely spread a huge ray of sunshine across the faces of many satisfied Charlestonians. Thank you Kevin, for putting so much time and energy into perfecting South Western Tex Mex cuisine-your menu rocks!!! I have yet to experience an item that doesn't leave me drooling for more.......just to name a few of my favorite bites.......the nachos are amazing(each individually prepared to perfection-I thoroughly enjoy them topped with either Pastor, Carnitas, Portabella Mushroom OR Beef Barbacoa-you can't go wrong with any of theses choices) I also absolutely love every single taco on the menu-Both of the fish tacos are heavenly-you could seriously drown in the baja sauce and die happy! If you enjoy preparing your own combo I highly suggest the Platos- they come with your choice of meat and a lil bit of all the fixins--hint hint--The guac is out of this world! Now, that I am completely starving and drowning in jealousy, since I don't live right around the corner anymore-I'm going to grab a margarita (& I highly doubt that it will come anywhere close to comparing to your deliciously fresh Zia Rita!) Much Love Zia can't wait for my next visit to Chucktown!

Always a favorite! I love that we can have a cheap dinner-and-a-movie date night here or dinner out with the kids. The guys running the place are always very attentive and truly want you to have a good meal. It's since grown in popularity--we went at 8:30 on a Thursday night--the place was hopping and can get loud--not great sound design leftover from Fez.. The fish tacos make me happy.

Sadly, I didn't get a chance to eat here so I can't comment on the food. I went in on a Saturday night around 6pm to meet a friend for dinner. I walked in and was told to sit where ever (it's kind of like Andolini's in that you order at the counter and then take a seat). Since my friend hadn't arrived, I went ahead and sat down at a table for 2 to wait for him. After a minute or so a server came over and asked me if I was waiting for someone - I said yes. The server proceeded to "warn me" (his words, not mine) that I could not hold a table and that if I didn't order something then I would have to get up if someone else wanted my table. Keep in mind there were 4 or 5 open tables and I had been sitting there approximately 4-5 minutes. I'm a 30-something female professional- I don't take kindly to being "warned" before dinner. I didn't feel the need to spend my money to support that kind of service and I called my friend who met me across the street at El Bohio for dinner. I will not be going back to Zia.
