Great Hot and Sour Soup. Love this place.

Sashimi was very fresh! We also had a couple of their popular rolls and the rest of the party really enjoyed them. Great service and great presentation of food.

I visit this place every time we visit Charleston. The food and service are solid, but today, the service was beyond anything we have ever seen. Simply outstanding! Our server was Will, again did I say phenomenal? My family including two kids were impressed with him. We ordered Tuna Dumplings and Shrimp Tempura as appetizers. We also ordered grilled shrimp with a delicious sauce and asparagus, Treasure Island roll, West Ashley roll and Crab Sticks. The food was simply amazing. Now, here is the sour note of the evening. Shortly after we ordered our meal, a waitress brought us a hand roll, we immediately told her it wasn't for us, she explained why it was for us and I indicated that we ordered meals with Will two minutes prior. She again insisted it was for us, a bit rude, however this time slightly more aggressive, so my wife got a bit upset and politely told her we didn't ordered that to talent away. She of course went away furious and confronted our server Will, who I can see from a distance telling her it was for another table. The waitress came back to our table, apologized and stated it was for table 5! Anyway, I requested to see a Manager before leaving the restaurant to convey our gratitude and feedback for such a fine service provided by Will. And guess what? That persistent waitress turned out to be the Manager. So here is my suggestion, be careful Manager, that bit of attitude could ruin a client's dinning experience and not return once/twice per month to drop between $80-$100 each visit. Especially visiting from Miami and having so many choices to eat around Charleston, the jewel of culinary art in the U.S. None of less, I will be back. Top 3 service ever. You rock Will.

Husband and I have eaten here a couple of times. The customer service is usually very good! Servers are friendly and helpful and the restaurant is clean. They are REALLY into soy paper rolls here which I was a bit surprised by but overall, every roll we've tried here has been amazing! We especially love the West Ashley roll! Also if you go with a large group and order a massive amount of rolls I've heard they style your choices into some cool or interested sushi architecture pieces. Generally speaking though, plating of the rolls is always interesting even if you only order one or two. Overall, even though it's nowhere near where we live or work, we definitely always plan to return! Great food, great service, great place!

BFF lunch here was great. We had the 2 rolls deal from their lunch specials, which were very affordable and had such a variety of choices as well. We were served a very delicious salad before our rolls came. Our sushi rolls were exquisitely rolled, none of my sushi fell out, so it was rolled tightly. The fish tasted and looked fresh. It was quite filling! The service in this place is impeccable. As soon as we walked in the door we were greeted and seated. The server was informative about what type of breading they used for the spicy crunchy tuna rolls. She was very attentive. I recommend visiting this place if you're in West Ashley.

Zen never disappoints! Don't let the looks deceive you. On the outside, it looks like an old Hardees or Pizza Hut or some other depressingly designed establishment, but the inside is nice and the sushi is the bomb dot com. I've been here multiple times for dinner and once for lunch (three rolls plus salad for 11.95? yes please.) The service is great, the drinks are fun, and this is always my first place for sushi! And as for appz, the Tuna Dumplings are a must. The Tuna-tini is good, but HUGE, and a little messy to eat. Tuna Dumplings win out if you are debating between the two.

My boyfriend and I loved this place! Went here the other day for lunch. No wait and great service. He got the spicy steak stir fry (not sure if that is the actual name) and loved it. Had a lot of meat. I got the house salad. The dressing was delicious is was a ginger dressing and it was wonderful. The salad was great too had just the right kind of toppings. For my lunch I had the trio rolls lunch special. Got the yellowtail scallion roll which was okay. The spicy salmon roll which in my opinion had too much tempura in it. And our favorite was the spicy crab roll. I really like this place:)
(5)Amanda H.
Zen never disappoints. I have now been here twice and both times it was phenomenal. The staff is always very friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the menu. My first visit in I had the Mongolian Beef - scrumptious! The second time I ordered Crab Rangoon and Teriyaki Chicken. The Crab Rangoon - OH. EM. GEE. It was incredible. I would definitely make the trip just for those little pockets of goodness alone. The chicken was also very good, but that Crab Rangoon stole the show. My friends ordered a variety of sushi (or rolls, I don't know all of the lingo there) and they were very pleased! Although the place was hoppin', the staff always came and checked on us, and I never found my glass near empty. Definitely worth a visit!

Treating a friend to lunch for her Birthday, three of us headed to West Ashley for sushi at Zen. We got there a couple minutes before noon and the place was packed! I'd never been for lunch and really wasn't expected a crowd so I was really happy for them because I've been a fan of Zen for some time now. The lunch specials are a great deal. You can get one of the warm dishes for $8.95 including rice and soup or salad. The sushi specials all ranged from $8.95 to $16.95 and also come with a soup or salad. Two of us decided to order the sushi lunch, 5 pieces of sushi (Chef's choice of the day) and a California roll. My other friend ordered the eel and avocado and tuna and avocado rolls. I was looking forward to the element of surprise and thought I was going to be treated with 5 different fun and creative sushi rolls. Instead, we got what I thought was sashimi. You know, the raw cut of fish on top of a ball of sticky rice? That's what I've always called sashimi!!. Anyway, it was tasty but not what I was anticipating. The salmon was by far the best bite of the meal for me. The quality of the food here has always been stellar and even with how busy it was the service was timely. I can't wait to head back and get the King's Speech specialty roll. It is by far my favorite!

Had to wait at the door for several minutes before being seated. The hostess had a stank look on her face when seating us and looking at my wife (my wife's hot) and we both thought it was just intimidation. The menu was small and very overpriced. We sat there for about ten minutes and no one came to even get our drink orders, they weren't busy and had open tables. We ended up leaving before anyone even noticed that we were there. Id recommend you get your Asian fix somewhere else.
(1)A L.
Good sushi but we are spoiled by Oriental Garden in Mt P...after going there the portions at Zen seem tiny and exorbitantly priced. What is this, sushi for ants? Just kidding. But it's just a bit dismaying when you open your to-go boxes that you spent $32 on and it's basically a snack - six bite-sized pieces of sushi.
(3)Timothy A.
Came here for lunch while working. Was able to get in and out with time to get back to the office. Great selection of sushi / sashimi and Asian food. I'll be back quite a bit I'm sure. Could be a good location for a date night with the wife.
(4)Blake P.
This place is really good. Order from here about twice a week or so and its always exceptional. The manager even waited like 20 mins after closing for me to make it up there for my to go order. That sort of thing doesn't go unnoticed. If you're in west ash.....this is one of the best spots to eat. The curries and sushi are all excellent. Highly recommend.
(4)Peonia E.
Had brunch here with some friends, we were in the mood for Chinese and I get so tired of Osaka (3stars). The food is always fresh, tasty and artfully prepared and the staff is always very accommodating. I like that they serve BOTH very delicious Chinese and Japanese and their sushi always satisfies. The only limiting factor for not dishing out 5 stars is I feel some of the dishes are "dated," as in its so eighties? to serve bright green and yellow sauces on top of a lovely peppered seared tuna appetizer, a little unappetizing:-) 15+ meals here and never once disappointed.
(4)Melody D.
The atmosphere is great. The food is great! And the service is great! I ordered the Sushi which was so fresh and delicious, and the house special lo mein which was also delicious. If you love Asian food, thus place is a must. I will be back.
(5)Andie C.
We were very underwhelmed by the food, atmosphere, and service. Food was overpriced for what we received, and not memorable at all. Service was VERY slow. We often had to wait 10 minutes (or more) just for a refill on our beverages. We sat in a booth in the bar area, which was a BIG mistake. It was so noisy that we couldn't enjoy our own conversation. We had to hear the annoying/inappropriate conversations of the large group standing in the bar area. The group was invading our space, and all intimacy of quiet/quaint dinner out was lost. We could not wait to get out of there, but the slow service held us up. I practically ran out before my husband was even done paying the bill! We will not be in a hurry to return after this experience. Many more options in the Charleston area for this type of cuisine.
(1)Andrew A.
Arguably one of this best places in the Charleston area for sushi. And the fired rice offerings are scrumptious. Ok, so like try this place - you'll be a fan too.
(5)J K.
Don't be fooled by the outside appearance, the inside is cool, calm and casual. Sushi for days and the appetizer shrimp will keep you coming back for more. Belly up to the bar and enjoy a quiet meal or sit a table and enjoy the ambience.
(4)Phoebe H.
I had no idea that we have a sushi gem in our backyard! I didn't think that it was going to be that fancy judging from outside, but when we stepped in we were pleasantly surprised at the upscale deco and furniture. The atmosphere was romantic and trendy. I loved all the sushi and was torn in my decision to get hibachi. Everything was delicious. We will be back often.
(5)Ashley B.
I don't usually eat raw sushi, I tend to go for the shrimp or crab sushi. I was really surprised and enjoyed their selections and the service was amazing. I had the rainbow sushi plate and it melted in my mouth. I loved every bite. I will defiantly be back for more!
(5)Gina M.
Never had a bad meal there. Always excellent. My brother even had his wedding reception there.
(5)Summer M.
It's nicer on the inside than I imagined it would be. Service was quick and friendly. I got the West Ashley roll on a suggestion from my friend and it was soooo good. I was actually craving it again the next day! I will definitely go back to try other things.

Best sushi in town. Don't let the location, proximity to shitty restaurants, or oriental massage sounding name throw you off. This place is a hidden gem. We've lived in Avondale for about 6 months now, and this place has become one of our favorite places to eat, even though we're a block from Triangle, Pearlz, Nirlep, and some other great choices. The sushi and specialty rolls are the best in town. My favorite thing on the menu is the Chirashi, but everything else I've had is good too. If you are more into rolls, get the West Ashley roll. The only hot food I've had is some of my girlfriend's Pad Thai and a chicken wings app. My girlfriend loves the Pad Thai. The chicken wings look like plain fried chicken, but there's something magical inside of them. They are absolutely delicious. If only they could toss them in buffalo sauce... Only bad thing is that they have an awful beer selection, but that's typically the case at most asian inspired restaurants. Anyways, check this place out. It's definitely worth the trip down 17. It's about the only thing worth doing that far down the hwy -- well that and getting on 26 -- but you won't be disappointed. If you're feeling a little crazy after dinner, you can check out one the many strip mall bars that this part of West Ashley has to offer. There has to be something interesting going on in some of these places or at least some entertaining people to watch inside the bar. Sorry, this really has nothing to do with Asian Fusion Zen, I just remember passing by a handful of strip mall bars on my way home. I mean a bar next to Bi-Lo? Sounds like a great business plan...
(5)Kelsey F.
The service is usually sub-par with empty glasses. Today no one checked on our meal until we were done with it. Be warned that nothing noted as spicy on the entrees menu is actually spicy - you have to ask for hot chili oil and season your meal yourself, even if you order it spicy!
(3)Derek D.
Great sushi, great service. We were passing through town and got tipped off to this spot. We were glad we did. Try the holy moly roll.
(5)Anthony E.
Easily the best sushi in town. Special rolls are all original and great! Even the presentation of the sushi is perfect. Take out orders are always done super fast. Don't try to go on Friday because the wait is usually an hour but any other day of the week I've been seated right away. Very friendly staff too. Will return often!
(5)Ashley W.
Great service wonderful food great atmosphere! Their chicken fried rice is some of the best I have ever had. Black Angel Roll is to die for!
(4)Ruby G.
The sushi at Zen may be some of the best in town. The honey wasabi is a delicious touch. Treasure Island Roll and Sex in The City Roll are a must! We love the Asian fusion menu that allows us to order sushi, Japanese, Thai, whatever we're in the mood for. Service is always great and the decor is beautiful inside.
(5)Victoria N.
Excellent sushi! We really enjoyed the rock n' roll. It was one of the best rolls we've ever had. We can't wait to go back and try other rolls. Service was also excellent and we really liked the atmosphere too.
(5)Michael B.
Zen Asian Fusion has some of the best sushi I've had in Charleston. The other night I had some old college friends in town and we decided to meet up at Zen for dinner and drinks. When we arrived we had a drink at the bar. The bartender was a great conversationalist, he was friendly and outgoing; making our party comfortable and setting the mood for a great dinner to come. After a drink we went to our table where our server came out and greeted us with a friendly and pleasant attitude. He could tell we were not in a hurry to order so he took our drink order and occasionally checking back with us to make sure we were good on drinks and if we were ready to order. We ordered some spicy chicken lettuce wraps and dumplings to start. The wraps were great with fresh lettuce and a slightly spicy chicken to top. The dumplings were great as well, cooked just right. For dinner I ordered the West Ashley roll and it was the bomb! Shrimp Tempura, Spicy Crunchy Crab inside, topped with White Tuna, Salmon, Yellowtail tuna, & Avocado in Spicy Mayo, Eel Sauce & Garlic Cream Sauce. Overall our party had a great experience having dinner at Zen. I personally can't wait to go back and try another roll.
(4)Erin R.
I ordered carry out here since I was staying just down the road in a hotel. The order was ready in 15 as promised which was a welcome change from the 45-60 wait I get in DC. I ordered the spicy crunch tuna roll and pork gyoza. The gyoza were steamed, which I found pleasantly surprising and were otherwise standard gyoza fare. My sushi was lacking - I didn't taste or feel the crunch at all and it wasn't very spicy. What WAS surprisingly spicy was their Pad Thai that my friend ordered. Not spicy in my normal sense of the word, but it did have a kick to it, which was an unwelcome surprise for my friend. I enjoyed it, so I surmise it depends on your opinion of le spice.
(3)Julia C.
We went for sushi... If you like imitation crab salad you'll love this place, if not you're in for a way overpriced disappointment. Only place I've been to that was so disappointing in Charleston yet. We also tried the calamari which was not only too rubbery (overcooked), but bland as well. It was possibly frozen, so that would explain that. We did ask for the spring rolls instead- still bland. The sushi was not bad per se, just not good. I'd rather eat sushi from harris teeter down the road. There wasn't crab salad in the menu description, but both rolls came with copious amounts of it. Ew. However, they have good reviews... Just don't understand why. Also our service was slow and the guy was uncaring- which is fine. I can get over bad service if the food is good, but if neither one works you got nothing. I wish I had not gone, seriously.
(1)Saba S.
Mike our waiter was great and gave good recommendations. The seaweed salad and West Ashley roll was delicious! The red Sangria was tasty also. Why the hell are the rolls so big? Make them smaller!!!!
(4)B B.
Delicious sushi and staff that is eager to serve. Only thing is no children menu. Other than that, try this place out.
(5)Sydney G.
Hands down, my favorite sushi in Charleston. I know it looks kind of like a craphole from the outside, but inside you'll find a classy, trendy sushi bar featuring chinese, japanese, and malaysian inspired food and decor. My favorite rolls are: King's Speech, Holy Moley, Rock and Roll, Treasure Island, West Ashley. I also love the House salad with apple-ginger dressing (so good!) and the Tuna Tini. They're also really accommodating if you're allergic to shellfish or have any other dietary restrictions. I highly recommend sitting at the sushi bar if you can. It's really cool to watch them make the sushi.
(5)Jim A.
I have eaten at Zen a number of times, and have been meaning to submit a review. It is one of my local favorites. I enjoy to quality and variety of the food, others I've dined with have praised the sushi, but I'm not a sushi eater so I haven't tried it -- my loss. The other dishes and specials I've had have all been great. The rick shrimp tempura starter is an always order for me and my friends. Always good service, even when busy, and good ambiance. PS - they have a nice room that you can reserve for larger parties, we've had a couple of birthday dinners there.
(4)Allan H.
Good sushi, quickly prepared. There was a very large crowd tonight which to me indicates they have been doing good food long enough to garner a good reputation. Helpful staff.
(4)Ketan S.
Very good food. Would recommend the lettuce wraps as an appetizer. Everything is good here, i like their red curry and pad thai. Ambience is very good. Trendy and modern setting with lighting / bamboo trees etc. Service is good. Again, one of my favorite places in Charleston.
(4)Jeff J.
Excellent service. Excellent food. Doesn't disappoint! My wife had a traditional Chinese fish and I enjoyed the Malaysian chicken (spicy!). I also had the salmon wraps for an appetizer upon the recommendation of our waiter; they were excellent. Overall excellent experience. We will be going back soon!
(5)Kelly F.
This place is fantastic and deserves 5 stars simply because their staff was so great. We got a waiter who went out of his way to make sure we didn't have gluten in our food. Decor is nice, great atmosphere. Food is pricey but that's what you expect at any decent sushi place.
(5)Kirston M.
This is my husband and my favorite sushi spot in Charleston and we have eaten many sushi places down town and MtP too. It's by far the best for quality and price. The rolls are large and very good. They have new rolls in the specials all the time which is nice and the presentation is spot on out of all the sushi places I'v been. The sushi chefs keep everything at the sushi bar (our normal seat) clean and give tastings too. It's nice that they recognize us and we feel a nice welcome every time we come in too.
(5)Brandon H.
After a long hiatus from Zen, I returned with a coworker for a well deserved long lunch. Like many of my other reviews, I will begin by wondering WHY I don't eat here more often. Zen has a pretty odd name. I mean an Asian Fusion Lounge? What IS that? Well, apparently it is an upscale Asian themed restaurant that serves a menu of Thai/Chinese/Japanese food and makes some pretty sweet sushi. Lets talk lunch specials, because that's the only time I've ever hit up this place. For under 12 bucks you can have your choice of a pretty expansive menu of entrees and a soup or salad.. I'd put it at around 30 options, ranging from Amazing Sauce (an epic stir fry) to Pad Thai to Sushi combos that are so pretty you almost feel ashamed eating them. I'd recommend this as a great spot for pretty much any occasion. Lunch runs from 11-3, and they have a big party room for groups which makes a business meeting longing for raw fish in a great position should they end up here. Smaller groups will find the seating comfortable, spacious, and still private enough to maintain an intimate conversation. I love the chicken Pad Thai. It can be a little saucy, but it has some great flavors going on and just a hint of spice that works perfectly for me. I also enjoy any sushi you put in front of me, and the presentation here is second to none. This is for the guys, but still I feel is worth nothing as anything positive about a men's bathroom deserver to make it into a Yelp review. During lunch, they fill all the urinalswith ice. This makes for a pretty awesome game of ice blaster if you feel the urge during your visit.
(5)M K.
Love this place. The sushi is awesome! Great atmosphere! Clean place. Friendly staff!
(5)Amy Lauren S.
A group of new friends and I went to Zen Asian Fusion yesterday and it was delicious. It has a great atmosphere (the bar is lit!), friendly staff, and an amazing, big lunch menu. You can get a lunch special, which comes with your entree, brown or white rice, and soup or salad. Or, you can get sushi- they had some interesting sushi selections that I haven't seen in other restaurants, too (sweet potato sushi, anyone?). Most of us ended up getting tofu- which can be tricky, but Zen does it right. A couple of us are vegetarians/vegans but even some of the meat eaters liked the tofu and said it was great. I personally had the sambal sauce (yellow curry) tofu, which wasn't super spicy but had enough kick for me. I also liked the salad (tasty dressing!) and the brown rice. The server recommended it and it didn't disappoint. In fact, if you're a vegetarian or vegan, the restaurant happily substitutes tofu for any meat-containing entree on the lunch menu, for the same price. Can we say options galore? If you like meat, you can get them with chicken, beef, or shrimp, so tons of combinations there too. It's a great spot for a quick lunch in West Ashley or to hang out, we will definitely be going back.
(5)Jeremy P.
Awful pop radio music played way too loud. BUT it won't keep us away because the service and food is always great. But man oh man they could do a lot for the atmosphere by changing the station. Ug.
(5)Renee O.
I was really hesitant because the outside of this place looks a little drab, but the inside is much nicer! The lunch specials are great prices and you get an entree plus a salad. Every shrimp dish is amazing and this place actually made me love tofu! The teriyaki tofu is so good!!
(4)Larla B.
Holy crap this place is delicious. Had the tuna tini appetizer and holy moly roll. The tuna tini was a great surprise. Heaping portion of spicy tuna on top a crab and seaweed salad, topped with spicy mayo, eel sauce, wasabi dressing (not too spicy though), with lots of tempura flakes, served in a martini glass. The holy moly roll was was as delicious as it sounds on the menu. Left feeling very full. Must try this place! Can't wait to come back.
(5)Amy Yvonne H.
I have yet to have a bad experience here. Impeccable service, beautiful food, delicious sushi! I had the twister with cream cheese & the black angel. Both were mouthgasmic. I'd pick the black angel first though. We also drank the creamy rum martini & it was good but not to die for. Over all, I'd say this is the place to go to delight your eyes & palate on some sush. Bonus: the mints are like Asian jolley ranchers! #mouthwatering. Great date spot. 1 roll is enough per person!
(5)Joy G.
They do have great food but very expensive...I had a house salad, 2 NON specialty rolls and my friend had a chicken and broccoli...hot tea and a coffee...50.00.....
(2)Brittany C.
II live very close to Zen. I can be there in less than 5 minutes. Ok, well that really depends on those pesky traffic lights....but that's a different story! Aaaanyways, it took me a while to give Zen a shot. I, shamefully I might add, judged Zen a little bit by it's 'cover.' The building looks aged, not run down, not dingy, just like it's been there a while and could use a fresh coat of paint. But I would drive by in the evenings and the parking lot would be packed! I finally decided it was time to try Zen. My SO and I went on a Friday night. It was busy, but the atmosphere is very chic and intimate. Though there were many people, it was not loud, and it was very easy to zone out into your own little world...I guess the name is quite fitting, huh? Anyways, I wasn't sure what I should order.Their menu is a good size. They have a large variety of sushi (both raw and cooked), your usual chicken, pork, and beef entrees (sesame, general taos, sweet and sour, etc), and a number of noodle dishes (udon, pad thai, etc). I have tried at least one from every category and it is ALL delicious. The have Thai, Chinese, and Japanese dishes. My personal favorite, and my usual whenever we go, is the pad thai. It's absolutely spectacular! Perfect amount of sweet, spicy, and savory! I'm not good with very spicy foods so when I ordered it the first couple of times I asked for it mild (yes, you can customize the heat level on any of the dishes!) Then, I forgot to ask, and when I dove in it was better than I could have imagined! Not too spicy, just the perfect amount of heat for me. My SO like very spicy dishes so he asks for his extra spicy and then we're both happy =). Yum yum yum! You honestly can't go wrong with whatever you order here.
(5)Crystal R.
New to SC and have tried a couple of places so far this is the best one. Interior of restaurant chic and clean. Staff friendly and courteous. Sushi is fresh and looks great tried the white garlic sauce with my sushi and my god it's delicious! Haven't tried all the rolls yet but I'll be here for a while and I will definitely try all. Keep up the good work!
(5)Daniel H.
Excelent sushi. Highly recommended. The restaurant is more than what you would expect by looking at it from the outside.
(5)Renard E.
I went to this restaurant yesterday and the staff were very nice and the food was great also.
(3)Tiffany R.
Make sure your order is correct ... They mess things up on us a few times ... Downtown sushi places are better... The restaurant inside is nice ...
(3)Jacqueline J.
Second time visiting this restaurant and I must say I'm still a fan. The Food came out quickly and the presentation is one to be envied by the Food Network. I love this restaurant and whenever I'm in town I will try to visit. Next visit I will be perusing the Sushi Menu. The Gyoza, Chicken Satay and General Tsao Chicken topped my list this go round.
(4)Kelly G.
Zen is a hidden gem in West Ashley. Hidden by its mediocre exterior building that makes it look like just another Chinese buffet.....but no, my friends, it truly is what is on the inside that counts at Zen. Step inside to find a trendy, upscale atmosphere with a "zen" ambiance. The bar is eye-catching and awesome. Dimly lit so everyone looks good, the bar itself is like a golden lit rock(lol). The staff is very friendly and most of them were faithful customers before becoming employees. The food is very good here. I really like the themed rolls like the "Sam Rittenberg" or "West Ashley" roll. I recommend the rock shrimp for appetizer. Leave the kids at home and enjoy some adult time at Zen!!
(4)Bianca B.
I really like there spicy crab rolls the only thing I didn't like was the lettuce inside their shrimp rolls. The atmosphere is really nice and the waiter are awesome as well.
(3)Kathryn P.
Delicious sushi! Very cool atmosphere and great drink menu. Definitely need to try the lunch specials: my favorite rolls are the Sweetie rolls and Salmon avocado rolls. The appetizers are my favorite! A great selection of fried and not fried apps. Call ahead for reservations for a table of five or more also parking can be tight but its worth it!
(5)Maria S.
We were a group of 13, with adults and kids celebrating 4 birthday's for a night out at Zen. We chose Zen because they have the best Red Dragon Sushi Roll and Tres Leches Cake in town. All of the food was amazing and the service was very attentive. Part of our party had been there before but the majority had not. We traveled from South Charlotte (30 minutes) and it was worth the drive. The servers were very friendly and did a great job accommodating our large party. Everyone in our party enjoyed their meal. Zen is a quaint and cozy restaurant tucked away off of East Boulevard serving Spanish food, great tapas and delicious sushi. Great for a date night or a family celebration. Don't miss a chance to enjoy a great meal here.
(5)Selphyne B.
It seems like every time we come here the food tastes better than before and is played differently, but in a much prettier way! This may be the only place I truly miss when we leave SC! We tried a new roll this time around: The Paradise Roll, soybean wrapped shrimp tempura, banana tempura, lobster salad with a mango sauce....unsettling at first because it is just so odd to me to have a sweet dinner roll but, oh man!!! The flavor is just so undeniably sexy when meeting with my palate! I'm not a fan of lobster, but the lobster salad was not powerful or overwhelming despite the very present nature if it( you could clearly see large chunks of lobster meat in this filling), both tempura components were done perfectly, and the soy wrapper (my first time eating this ingredient) was quite refreshing and complimentary to the flavor profile. We also stayed true to what we come here for: our beloved coconut shrimp and usual hand rolls, as well as some pan fried vegetable gyoza. The shrimp was completely the star of the meal! The largest shrimp I've gotten arrived at our table and was cooked to perfection: lightly battered and fried, dressed in a silky coconut sauce and plated so beautifully with beet shavings, fresh strawberries, strawberry and mango sauce and a side of PERFECTLY Al steamed broccoli, nice bite not under or over cooked. This dish just cried out DONT EAT ME! It is always so hard to destroy a gorgeous meal!
(5)Carolyn D.
Wow were we impressed!! Unique flavors, combinations and presentation!! We had the specialty rolls: Rock and Roll, Sex in the City and Kings Speech, wow awesome!! Thank you for a wonderful dining experience

I normally do not like Asian food but today my cousin recommended this restaurant. So we went there for lunch and they were so friendly and the food was so delicious. I had the orange chicken and it was amazingly good. The portion size was so huge but still well worth it. I most definitely will recommend this restaurant to people. & I myself will be back.

Gluten Free Friendly! First, don't let the ouside of this place put you off. If you have a gluten allergy or sensitivy they have gluten-free soy sauce. A good portion of the menu can be altered to meet your needs. I ate there with no reaction. Everything was delicious and the service was great.

Very good restaurant! The food was fresh and served beautifully. The place was decorated nicely. The staff was nice. I wanted to hug the chefs- best rangoons I've ever had in my life and I got a cherry on top of my seaweed salad?! Amazing! Will definitely be back!!
(5)Chuck H.
Very good!!! Tuna avocado rolls and spicy crunchy crab rolls were fantastic. I also had general tsos with pineapple...that was good as well...nice clean place...
(5)Deb B.
The food was average. The atmosphere and design was quite nice. I did not try to sushi portion of the menu. As for dishes, I found them to be small and bland. Nothing to write home about.

Love this place! Staff is always friendly and food is always, always wonderful. The crab Rangoon is the best I've ever had!

We ate here twice while vacationing in Charleston. It's now my favorite restaurant. The outside is very lovely and inside it is very comfortable. Casual is fine. The service was excellent, the food was the best and the restaurant was absolutely spotless...

This is a tough review for me to write. Went for lunch and choose from the $8.95 lunch specials. First off this is a remarkable space redesigned after being a golf shop. The interior wreaks of a high priced first rate design team. I loved the feel. The staff is well trained and right on point. The quality and preparation of my shrimp were outstanding. Where they fell down was the bland and uninspiring peppers, lemon grass and what I thought were zucchini along with a bowl of rice that tried to compliment the shrimp. Everything was a 5 but the dish itself.

While at Toyota, decided to try them for lunch. Have eaten here three times now. Each time have had sushi. Presentation is awesome. Wow factor. Sushi has been the best we have had and has always been fresh. The house salad with house dressing is better than C Dreaming. Waiters have always made sure the glasses are full.

The sushi at Zen is delicious! I have been twice in the past few weeks and have been very pleased with the sushi. The cocktails are also delicious! I would like to see more specials and more reasonable prices. I think their prices are slightly high. Otherwise, I love the ambience and the sushi!
(4)Christi T.
It was good but I personally believe I've had better elsewhere. Nothing really stood out here. The cashew chicken was good, the shrimp shumai was good, to sushi was good, but nothing was great. They also didn't have any happy hour specials for regular customer on Monday...
(3)Anthony G.
We love Zen! They have some of the best sushi in Charleston. Their take on classic Chinese foods are delicious not mention the Asian fusion dishes. You can not beat their lunch specials as well. The staff are always friendly and attentive.
(5)Daniel B.
This is perhaps West Ashley's best kept secret. I visit this place at least once a week and I am never disappointed. The sushi selection is incredible and a lunch meal runs as little as $10. Everything at Zen is literally bursting with flavor. A personal favorite for me is the Iron Man Roll. All their sushi has a freshness that is incomparable. Service is always quick, friendly, and eager to make suggestions. Zen is truly one of my all time favorite places and I look forward to continuing to support them for years to come.

It is a nice restaurant but it is defiantly not in the $$ price range. It was not what I expected but still it was clean the food looked good and the atmosphere was very nice.

My entourage and I were out of town and starving for some good food. Most of us were Asian so we wanted something familiar to our taste buds when we worked up quite an appetite from the beach. Zen Fusion came up as the closest one to us and it had 4 stars and pretty good prices. The DECOR was very nice, modern, and chic. I was pleasantly surprised when we stepped inside because the exterior was not very impressive. The SERVICE was nothing to complain about it and the waiters complied with most of our needs. The FOOD is where it all went south. When they say ZEN ASIAN FUSION the fusion stands for we do all types of Asian food mediocre or badly. Plus, we'll change the names to make it sound hip and over charge the crap out of you. I don't mind the high prices, in fact, I was ecstatic to see them because we were hungry and expecting a great meal to end our vacation. First of all, Asian Fusion means you combine different types of Asian foods into one dish so for ex; a hybrid dish of Japanese/Vietnamese or even western food with Asian flavors is considered Asian Fusion. In this case, this just means "we serve Thai food, Sushi, and Chinese and we don't specialize or do any of them WELL." The Zen Triple Delight @ $24.95; Combination of beef, shrimps, and scallops stir fried with Hoisin Sauce. You can get this at almost any decent take-out Chinese food and they would do it better at half the cost! I wouldn't say it's terrible but very bland and offers no memorable taste. It's a very typical AMERICAN Chinese dish. House Fried Rice @$13.95; combination of shrimp, chicken, beef in a fried rice. Again, NO FLAVORS. Incredibly bland and under-seasoned. The rice was also completely white so there were no sauce added to it. Very forgetful. Thai Calamari @ $6.95; Let's just not call it Thai Calamari and just call it fried Calamari ok? 5 pieces, sauce from a bottle you can get at any Asian grocery. Here is when it goes downhill even further Peking Duck @$23.95. Incredibly small portions not even one halve of one. NOT MADE FRESH. It was made, frozen, and microwaved/baked over again. You can tell from the lack of moisture in the meat and Duck meat is suppose to be very tender and juicy because of it's fat content. It was dry and again, just typical Hoisin Sauce just slathered on it. I'm assuming this place is run by Chinese people by the Chinese management and sushi chefs so this shocking to fuck up. As an Asian, this pissed me off so much I wanted to punch a baby. We ordered 2 HOUSE SPECIAL PAD THAI. Which came with large shrimps, beef, and chicken. WTFFFF. This thing was legit gross. Pad Thai is suppose to be fairly dry noodles, sweet, and peanut-y in flavor. This was a mess. It was soggy and the noodles were over due! It was mushy and the after taste was horrid. You can definitely tell the noodles were sitting around too long and they decided to use it anyway. We each tried a bite and we left a whole dish and 1/2 left when we left, no doggy bag. TL:DR ; Good decor, food is overpriced that you can get at any decent take out restaurant. And by Asian fusion, it means they do many types of Asian foods, Thai, Sushi, Chinese, and etc. but THEY WILL NOT DO THEM WELL. The food is not going to be original.

Clean, fresh, cuurent yet uses basic ingredients and old school favorite dishes with current flavors

Ok I LOVE THIS PLACE! Ambiance was awesome! The decor is and lighting is great! Servers were super friendly. We got a few rolls and unfortunately didn't like one of them. They took it graciously and replaced it with another choice of ours. All of the rolls we had were delicious although I can't remember which we had! Stop in though everything was extremely fresh!
(4)Lana S.
Good place, I love the ambiance, sort of trendy :) the sushi is delish and fresh, had some other asian dishes - they were good too. Unfortunately they need to train their servers better - they are friendly and knowledgable but sort of sloppy and dont check back on you often.
(4)Ryan H.
mothers day we went and had a fantastic afternoon. same bartender as before who was more than helpful! half price apps and $5 saki will get me back again along with the good service. there are a couple apps not on the menu that you have to ask about. wontons with tuna is one of them. yum. the wings were not the best but everything else was great. I really enjoyed my lettuce wraps and the dumplings. My wife wants us to start going every Sunday. Not sure that will happen but the quality and price at happy hour are hard to beat.
(4)Liz L.
Awesome lunch special and the exterior makes you delightfully surprised when you see how nice it is inside. Food is always fresh and the people that work there are super friendly. What's not to like?
(5)Traci A.
This place is amazing. Some of the most beautiful sushi I've ever eaten. The specialty rolls are a little pricey but the portion is large. Great service too which is hard to come by these days!
(4)Stephanie V.
Had the shrimp w/garlic sauce lunch special (8.49) it was ok.. Little tangy/sweet had about 6 jumbo shrimp.. Didn't eat all the veg.
(5)John S.
The best Asian in Charleston, by far - maybe all of South Carolina. Like the other reviews, I was skeptical when we drove up, but on Christmas night not a lot of choices out there. My lucky day, because this place is fantastic. The interior is very nice and cozy, roomy and inviting - I hate places that have the tables stacked on top of each other. Our server, Kevin, was most helpful. We started with the Guacamole Tuna appetizer - fantastic.!! She had the Rittenburg Roll, I had the Flavor of Malaysia - both were very tasty - nice portions. Excellent Kirin beer with dinner - we will most definitely be back!!!
(5)Josh S.
What a gem! Outside you will be like WTF??? Inside, D-Y-N-O-M-I-T-E;) Great Ambiance, Awesome Food, ask for the Kracken. Its a very laid back great chill spot with great food.. Note: Late on a tuesday is not necessarily a good time to bring a group in but it was my birthday. Late service and long wait....only knock.
(4)Evan T.
This is by far my favorite sushi spot in the Charleston area. The rolls are very tasty and creative adding local favorites such as sweet potato and fried chicken to them. The presentation is great, and makes each plate feel as if a great deal of emphasis was put on it. The staff is great, from the hosts and hostesses to the wait staff, bartenders and chefs. Every interaction I have had has been more than pleasant. I plan on continuing to be a regular at this place and would recommend the same to friends and family. Keep up the great work guys!
(5)Corene P.
This was the first time I tried sushi and it was great! Fantastic service and great atmosphere. I will come back.
(4)Lara B.
Mostly just eaten sushi here, but it's awesome & they have a wide variety of choices. I have also gotten the veggie terriyaki lunch plate & it was awesome. I've never had that many veggies in a plate. The service is awesome & always willing to make a suggestion (trust them, they know what they're talking about!!! I moved away from West Ashley, but drive here for the sushi!

This place is AMAZING! I wish it was down here in Central FL. I went there with my husband and found it just by looking at places close to our hotel and based again totally on Yelp reviews. Thank you Yelpers!! I do have to say that once we got there we were a little apprehensive. The look outside doesn't say much and based on that only we probably would've left, and the parking lot was pretty empty. Also the sign outside says "Zen Asian Fusion Lounge" or something like that, but the word "lounge" worried me. We still decided to go in because the reviews were so good and some people had mention the not so great look outside. Once inside the place actually looks very nice and everybody was great, fantastic service. Everything we had here was delicious starting with the spring rolls, yum! pure goodness. Then we had the chicken fried rice and were in heaven when we saw they had brown rice as an option, yes!!! Any place that serves brown rice has a special place on our hearts. This was a really big portion and I didn't want to stop eating it, it was so good. We finished with the ice cream tempura and I'm glad we picked that, it was delicious. We left full, happy and with leftovers :-D (Why not 5 stars? I never give out 5 stars because there might be a place even better out there *wink, *wink)
(4)Amanda B.
Very expensive with LOW quality fish. Terrible. Their garden salad was very overpriced and was sitting in a puddle of water, the salad dressing tasted like only mayo. Chirashi is the worst I've ever seen, I did not touch it, sent it back and left the restaurant. I instantly felt sick within 5 minutes of leaving. I will not return.
(1)Eric D.
Awesome environment, good sushi, calamari is average. Overall B+
(4)Xavier B.
All around great service and very tasty food. I recommend the cold unfiltered saki and you must try the West Ashley Roll, it's amazing! All the reviews are on point so just go if your looking for a tasty Asian Fusion experience.
(4)Alireza S.
Low quality food. I couldn't taste anything fresh. I really don't understand when business owners would finally understand what people want in a restaurant. I can care less that you have 1500 dishes, (and every sane person knows that any place with that much variety has no quality food) and I can care less about fancy decoration. I speak on behalf of all intelligent people when I say what everyone want is this: A really clean place, with fresh food. Their plates were dirty and smelled bad, and looked from WWII. The glasses smelled and were greasy. The food was all frozen, nothing fresh. Sauces were all canned. I would pay a lot more if these idiots had some fresh food that I could come back to, and clean plates and glasses so I would be sure I am not drinking the saliva of the last person... Come on damit. I hate to ruin a local business, but I rather eat at Panda Express!! )
(1)Doug W.
Not impressive at all. Typical Chinese food, but ours was served cold. I had high hopes for this place. Still haven't found a decent Chinese restaurant in Charleston...
(1)Glenda K.
Great food. Work in the area and often visit for lunch. Fast service
(4)Colleen J.
Don't be fooled by the appearance, this place is much better looking on the inside! This place has great ambiance and I have had great service each time I have gone. I am a pretty loyal sushi addict, so I hate to say that besides the soups and tempura I have not branched out much. Their sushi here is great, not overly priced, and cut small enough that you don't have to unhinge your jaw to eat a single piece. I definitely recommend this place!

Rainy Sunday night, after a 5 hour drive home from Atlanta, we pulled into Zen's parking lot to check the place out. Staff was great welcoming us on this maiden visit. Our waiter gave us a good rundown of the sushi specialty rolls, which so intrigued us we didn't even investigate the rest of the menu. We had an amazing appetizer with salmon and other deliciousness that had me wanting to drink the remaining sauce. Only reason I didn't was because I had a delicious something-or-other with gin, st Germaine, and lime juice waiting to be sampled. We ended up ordering the Twister and the West Ashley rolls, both of which were among the tastiest sushi we've had of late. Definitely fancy rolls, though, but fresh and flavorful. We'll come back to try the regular sushi, or perhaps for lunch sometime, saving supper for special occasions. Happy to expand our repertoire for good lowcountry sushi, even if it does mean going off the peninsula.
(4)Zheng C.
The Asian says - yes! I had the $8.75 sushi combo where i got to pick two different rolls. I got the eel avocado and salmon avocado roll. Can't really complain much. it was good. Good company. Good sushi. Good ambience. That's kinda all you need in life! (Not really, just sometimes, especially on Wednesdays) Happy eating guys!

I used to go to Zen a fair amount, based on a recommendation. I have had sushi everywhere in Charleston and many NYC locations, so I have a good idea what I think is quality. Zen worried me as I drove up to the lot and saw the location, it had that Chineese buffet look from outside, yet turned up my collar and proceeded inside.I must admit, I just was not feeling as though this was going to be any particularly enjoyable eatery, recommendation or no recommendation. The saying Don't Judge a Book By its Cover, fits well here--insert here-- Very unique decor and service that made you most welcome upon entrance. Once seated, I had a few different servers, none were very experienced, but they made up for it in attention and never abandoning us even for a moment. Water always filled, always within a eyes hot of us for any need we may have had, they really were attentive. The food is outstanding, colorful, creative, prepared to perfection and just delicious in taste. A symphony with every mouthful and the fish is as if it was just plucked from the ocean-meaty, good texture and just has that all around high end sushi delight. I dropped $80.00 on brunch there, one time, not sure how that happened but when the bill came due, I had no issue-myself and my company had a wonderful time and the bill was higher than anticipated, but when the product is excellent, it really matters not.
(5)Kate M.
My favorite Asian restaurant in Charleston, hands down. They are very accommodating of special orders and have many vegetarian options and a wonderful wine list. Large portions, reasonable prices, VERY good service. I used to be a regular at another local Asian restaurant, but I've switched my loyalty to Zen. Keep up the good work!
(5)Edi R.
It was a surprise to walk in and see the beautifully decorated restaurant. great ambiance, background music, bar area and sushi bar. We kept looking around at the decor - they did a gorgeous job. Sushi lunch was great - very fresh, not too much rice, fresh fish and veggies. The service was excellent as well. We want to go back for dinner/ cocktails because the food was so good and the atmosphere was fabulous. Don't let the location fool you- if you like sushi and Japanese, along with some thai dishes, you have to give it a try. It is worth a trip to see the decor, and the food will win you over. They have a private curtained room if you have a group or family.
(4)Cara F.
Best sushi in West Ashley. Hands down. The stir fry dishes, especially the black bean sauce, are awesome too!
(5)Iris M.
Great, fresh sushi, sashimi, and appetizers. Presentation was amazing and the service impeccible. Best Japanese in town!
(5)Aneesha S.
sake tini time! Happy hour at the bar with a girlfriend - very fresh sushi and cool ambiance.

We consider ourselves regulars.....can't go too often because many dishes have different names but almost taste the same....but always decent....But our last visit my wife ordered Udon noodles, she's had it before so didn't foresee any problem....I finished my usual and saw she left half the food....They had spiced it up and she could not eat anymore....She likes the place, so she didn't want to say anything...but I did...they offered my wife some ice cream....I took that as an insult and they won't see me there again......
(2)Jamie B.
I have mixed reviews on this one. To begin with, the decor reminded me of a joint in DC- modern/artsy. However, I couldn't get out of mind that Piggly Wiggly was next door amidst a strange shopping center that includes a CeCe's Pizza, Taco Bell, and liquor store. I really liked the presentation of this place, but I felt the food was lacking in taste. We ordered edemame, sushi, and some vegetarian noodles. It was pretty late at night, dead slow, yet our food took forever to come out. Usually edemame comes out first, but it came with our meal. I was also served the sushi 15 minutes before the noodles. The sushi was decent, but I do like Osaka's sushi much more. The edenema was pretty good, and the noodles were average- lacking in flavor. I felt like this restaurant was trying to sell itself on appearances which is fine in cities like DC and NYC. It's great to take pride in a modern establishment just make sure that quality of the food can back it up.
(3)Loren K.
Better than any other sushi I have had in Charleston. Unexpected to see very cool decor inside. Clean.
(5)Dave K.
I either came on a bad evening, or this was business as usual for them. Our sushi took 45 minutes from time of order to the time to reach the table. Upon receipt of my sushi, several pieces of the sushi was warm. Making the sushi taste just aweful. So I asked the server to take it away. When I received, the bill I was charged full price. I asked her to reduce the price since I wasnt able to finish my aweful meal. Her reply was, "but you ate several pieces". (Really? I thought... how do you think I knew the sushi was bad?) So I told her they still need to take something off. They took off 15%. Even though I only ate about 15%. I do not recommend this restaurant, and if you go... buyer beware. I love sushi, and consider myself a sushi snob. Good sushi, this was not!
(1)Stephen M.
I should have read the reviews before I ordered, but I went after the thai calamari and sambali sauce with yellow curry and shrimp, instead of having sushi. The seafood was fresh and the preparations tasty, but not 'woo-hoo'. Our server was inexperienced and seemed anxious to take our plates away, but then couldn't be found when we really wanted something. The ambience was a surprise . . .

I have to admit that I had my doubts about Zen Asian Fusion at first. After all, it was built into what used to be a golf shop. But when we entered the restaurant, I was pleasantly surprised. The decor is really cool and actually makes the place look like a high-end downtown restaurant. When I looked at the menu, I was a little shocked at the prices. Then I realized that I was looking at the specialty rolls, which ranged from about $11 to $20. I found the regular sushi listings toward the back of the menu and felt relieved that the prices were comparable with other sushi restaurants. This place doesn't just serve sushi, hence the "asian fusion" part of the name. There are also traditional Thai and Chinese dishes, including things like papaya salad and the requisite beef and broccoli. I had the Maki B combo, which included spicy salmon, tuna, and crab rolls. The sushi was great, but really no better than the other sushi restaurants I frequent. What was amazingly good was the seaweed salad I had as an appetizer. It was seasoned really well and had the nice little extra surprise of a cherry sauce on the side (and even a cherry on top). I was a little confused at first, but it was an unexpectedly yummy combo. The rest of my party enjoyed their food as well, and the service was top-notch. The waitstaff and host were very friendly. They also have live music on Tuesdays from 6-9pm, and happy hour from 4-7pm Monday through Saturday. I'd definitely recommend Zen Asian Fusion to anyone who wants a great Asian fusion experience with the ambience of a hip downtown restaurant, but doesn't want to fight the crowds or wait an hour for a table.
(4)Henry C.
We ordered 5 types of Sushi and the Gen Tso's Chicken. All together it was pretty good and very taste. I would recommend to anyone.
(5)Shannon M.
So yummy. Best sushi I've ever had. We were visiting family here and this was their suggestion after I asked for sushi. Wow!! The sake was great, salad was to die for, and sushi was incredibly fresh and so creative! Service was a bit slow, but it was a very busy Friday night and they were packed so that was to be expected. Our waitress was awesome! Too bad we aren't anywhere near SC because this would be our new regular spot!
(5)Celena S.
This place is a little pricey for the food and cheesy decor, but if you're gonna go get the house or beef mei fun Singapore style. It's a spicy and delicious.
(3)Jimmie B.
Love this place! I make it a point to go there every time I'm in Charleston. I love the ambiance and THE best sushi ever! Food presentation is 110%. Food is fairly priced, and they have great lunch specials. Sit at the sushi bar. The chefs there may make samples for you. Have tried both the sushi and the traditional menu that has Chinese and Thai choices. Have eaten there about 5 times, and have never been disappointed. Service is fast, helpful, and friendly!
(5)Ayn M.
I had heard that this would be a good place for lunch, so my friend and I dropped in hungry. The menu was disappointing from the start. There were only a few choices. Nothing special, chicken, chicken, and beef and broccoli (shrimp could be added also). I got beef broccoli and my friend got orange chicken. There were only 2 people to wait tables so we had to wait to order. When the meal came---shucks--my beef was so tough I could not swallow it, it came with a small bowl of lettuce and some dry brown rice. My friends orange chicken was soggy and tasted as if the sauce, what there was of it, was bitter. I will never go there again. It did seem as if the main offering there was sushi. If you really like sushi and want it for lunch this may be a good place, but don't go for regular Asian food.
(1)Kate K.
Amazing sushi! I eat here all too often!
(4)Kelly O.
The food here is great, which is a shame b/c the service is so poor my husband and I vowed to never eat there again. Every server we've ever had here is bizarre, during our last visit there the waitress stared into the pitcher for 2 minutes commenting on how square the ice cubes were. Zen employs the most socially awkward servers we have ever dealt with. Not only are they strange, but it is par for the course for them to forget your order and not return to the table once you have your food. Sad to say...we will not be back.
(2)Aura E.
Excellent food (sushi is fantastic), nice decoration, great service. Highly recommended!
(5)Ashlee R.
Great Asian restaurant! It has a great blend of traditional Chinese food, Thai and Sushi (may be the best Shusi I've ever had). Don't be fooled by the exterior, the interior is very stylish and eclectic with a great ambiance. The bar was very pretty too - the actual bar top lights up.
