Kaffir lime leaves and fish sauce permeate the Penang curry. Those two flavors, often abandoned when Thai food sells out for the American palate, have not been forgotten here. The details of the tuna roll including sesame seeds, good nori (with that slightly chewy texture) and fresh tuna (with that bounce when you bite followed by faint sweetness) made it remarkable. The fresh spring rolls were wimpy in size with scant shrimp and over abundant iceberg lettuce - skip them. Prices are a bit inflated compared to portion size. But overall, expect a nice dinner in a pretty atmosphere with great service. No wonder there was a packed house on a Tuesday night.

This place is so wonderful. The service is great and the food is phenomenal! Loved the volcano roll and the soft shell crab in chili sauce

First of all their menu, though tricky to find, is at thaielephantsrestaurant.… . The Harborview Roll is an absolute must; delicious and so interesting to look at. Our next favorite was the Rebel Yell Roll. Who would have thought of jalepenos and sirache? But it really works. And I always love a Salad Roll. Yum! Their Thai food is very good too! Yay for James Island!

We started with a squid appetizer that was spicy, yet fresh and awesome. I got two rolls of sushi and my girlfriend had a Thai crab dish that were simply amazing! If you like sushi, this is the place. We will definitely be back to try more of the menu

Love this place!!!! The best Tai in Charleston! I had the green curry soup with chicken, eggplant, red and green peppers, peas and basil in a green curry sauce! Everything came out piping hot and fresh. It came with a delicious bowl of jasmine rice that was done to perfection. I had questions about the gluten because I have a severe allergy and they were so careful with my food. The chef even came out to talk to me about the ingredients and preparation. I was very impressed and this meant a lot to me that they would take the time and the care.

I am super excited that more and more ethnic restaurants are popping up in Charleston and think as far as Thai food is concerned, Thai Elephants on James Island ranks high on the list. About half of the restaurant's menu is dedicated to sushi (including nigiri and sashimi) with the other half is composed of traditional curries, noodles, vegetable, seafood and meat dishes. I went last night for dinner and my friend and I both ordered off the sushi menu. Along with the miso soup which is always a must for me, I ordered the Octopus, Squid and Salmon Nigiri, which are priced around $5-7 for two pieces each. All were prepared super simply without any added sauces or spices, allowing the seafood to shine through. I do wish the nigiri didn't all come with wasabi already on it, as people usually like to put that on themselves due to how strong the flavor is. My friend ordered the "California Roll 1983", which came with 8 large pieces loaded with chunks of crab meat, avocado and cucumber and topped with masago (fish roe). In terms of sushi rolls, the menu is quite extensive all ranging from $5-14 with the option to add cream cheese or a quail egg (yes please) for $1 or deep-fry the entire roll for $2. I am eager to go back to this place and try one of their Thai dishes like their Penang Curry, Stir-Fried Crab or Drunken Noodles, all of which looked delicious at the tables around us (yes I always spy on food around me). As far as Thai food goes in Charleston, I would definitely recommend this place along with CO and Basil downtown. As for sushi, I would recommend this place as well, along with OKU downtown and Kanpaii (the best in my opinion) in Mount Pleasant.

FINALLY! After years and years of me saying JI needs a decent sushi place-WE GOT IT! The first thing to catch my eye upon walking in to this place was the impressive furniture. The tables are made of carved wood and have gorgeous elephant detailing under a glass top, complete with sturdy chairs that take some elbow grease to move. The staff was very friendly and the place was very clean. I tried the tempura crab roll and the avacado roll. These were both fresh and delicious-hit the spot! My husband tried one of the curries-thai hot-and was very impressed by all the flavors in his dish. We finished the meal by ordering the mango sticky rice for dessert. All of the above was perfectly fresh and delicious. I cannot wait to return, time and time again! So thankful to have this place right down the street!!

Amazing food! I went starving & left with a box. The green curry with chicken was 10x better than Basil's. And the volcano roll was the best sushi I have ever had! It had a yummy calamari salad on top! Bursting with flavor! I will definitely be back... Like tomorrow.

I ordered the Pinapple Fried Rice and it was excellent! Service is wonderful and the ambiance made me feel relaxed. As if you know you came to the right place to eat!

Very delicious. I went there on a Friday night a month or so ago sushi chef is super cool made us all kinds of delicious dishes. I want to go back but I sent some friends there on a Sunday night and they said it was terrible. I told them they probably should've left when the lady taking their order said she didn't work there and work there and the person who did work there said the chef quit or was not there that night. They said the miso soup tasted like syrup but it sounds like they didn't put any water to the mix. But enough of their experience my experience was really good and I liked everything I had and I am absolutely going back next chance I get to give my second try. My friend with me right now said he would definitely not go back oh well his loss I'll let you know...

My new favorite spot! And luckily only two minutes down the road! Went in this evening to place a take out order and the sushi chef helped me pick out my order! He was very personable, asked my name, and suggested I get some of the particularly fatty tuna he had in today. It was all delicious. Thai and sushi are two of my favorite cuisines, this place is Nirvana. Can't wait to bring all my visiting friends and family here!

Based on other reviews I guess my girlfriend and I went there on the wrong night. The service was terrible, had to repeat our order to three different employees because the first server "forgot" our order. Received the wrong drinks. Sushi was horrendous. I can truly say this was the first dining experience where I took a few bites of the food and quickly asked for the bill so I could leave as fast as possible. We were really excited to go here based on things we heard from people. Will never spend money there again.

Just opened and its pretty good. I had the Pad Thai with shrimp and it was, in my opinion, better than Basil or anywhere else around town. I also tried some sushi and it was very tasty and fresh. The staff is on top of things and the tables and chairs are impressive, seriously they probably spent a fortune on the tables and chairs. Tons of choices for vegetarians and large portions at dinner.

New favorite sushi place! Chef Yoshi is great. Very personable and experienced. We had a meal that was pretty much samples of various items that the chef gets to choose. It was a great date night. Chef Yoshi includes you in the process which made it fun. Service was great as well. The waitress didn't let my water glass get below half full. Prices are decent and food was wonderful. Plan on making this place a regular!

Great selection of the sushi, nigiri, and maki rolls. Super fresh. Loved! Best place for Sushi on JI.

Pretty good Thai place - seems like people mostly order the sushi however. We got the following: Tempura Crab with added cream cheese - this was okay - the crab meat was oddly chewy? Drunken noodles - a tad salty, but good. Not the best I've ever had. 3 Flavor Duck - awesome!! Loved the crispy skin on top! Would definitely return. The Happy Hour specials look good.

Thai Elephants has very tasty Thai dishes! They also have really really great sushi. The decor is great also. Each chair and table has ornate carvings in them. Service is great and people are friendly. They have Thai Tea as well. The menu is well made. I had the Massaman Chicken and a Rebel Yell Roll. My wife had Pad See Ew and a Panko Crab Roll. Her's was excellent and I would even consider getting Great place, I'll be back. Keep it up!

One of my friend's lives on James Island and had heard about this newer Thai place and wanted to check it out. The outside is an older strip mall. Nothing special. The inside decor is also a little older and feels a bit run down. However the tables and chairs are beautiful Thai wood carvings. The chairs are sooooo heavy that it's almost impossible to move them to even sit down. When we got there there was only one other table. We got there around 6PM on Labor Day Monday. Happy hour specials are from 4-7 so we got there at a good time to still get some discounted drinks. Wine and Sake are $5.50 during happy hour. Each of us got a different dish - and all were pretty good. Expect to spend about $15 per entree. They also have a whole sushi menu but we didn't get any. The waiter we had was nice but he didn't seem that sure of the menu (which isn't very big) and also fumbled a bit with the happy hour specials and prices. We got there at a good time because around 7 it started to get much busier. There was one other server besides ours. Between the two of them they seemed like they were having a hard time getting to everyone and dealing with the "rush." But by that time we had our checks.

Thai and sushi are becoming a very common part of the Charleston food portfolio. It is now beginning to be easier to differentiate the quality of the cuisine. Thai Elephant is nicely hidden just off of Folly Road between Walgreens and Sonic. What a combination. The first impressive thing is the tables. Wooden hand carved sculptures under the glass table. It is really really dookie impressive. I'm not sure if dookie is the right adjective or even a word, but when you see the tables, you will know what I mean. It is a small place so if busy, don't be afraid to sit by the sushi bar. It is very comfortable and easy to have a conversation. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Plus we got the first hand smells and close to the rest room. For some that is a big deciding factor. The spring rolls were very light and mouthwatering. You get two cut in half so it is a smaller portion, but a good way to start the evening. The sushi is excellent. Very tight rolls with a rich fresh combination of ingredients and choices. I had the coconut basil soup. It was not what I had expected. There was more of a lemongrass taste so the sweetness of coconut was minimized. Yet, I still thoroughly enjoyed the taste. If you are expecting the same sweet taste as the coconut soup as Basils, don't get this, but if you want a good strong soup, this is well prepared. The staff is very very friendly and constantly smiling. This is one of the better thai and sushi choices in Charleston.
