Stopped by for dinner. We vacation down here annually and added Sweeney's to our rotation last year. So this was our second visit. Food did not disappoint. Had the ravioli appetizer, which was good. For my entree I had the shrimp and angel hair pasta which I thoroughly enjoyed. The amount of shrimp in the dish was about double what I expected. I closed it out with an fantastic homemade peanut butter pie. Only knock was the waiter. The service was good but he seemed either distracted or new, couldn't tell. The owner, Jim Sweeney, was very visible and stopped by several times. Overall an excellent experience.

We stopped in at Sweeney's for a very solid brunch while in the area. The high points: A pancake the size of a dinner plate and as thick as a book (and to think we scoffed that it came with no sides! What fools we were), a very tasty burger, mimosas by the pitcher and a bloody mary bar where you can doctor your drink to your liking. The service was just fine. Nothing to complain about. It was all around a very pleasant experience, with one or two small missteps (someone said the grits were very sweet and off-putting) that kept it from achieving a 5. I definitely recommend you stop in if you're vacationing in the area, though.

Went for Sunday Brunch, nothing to tell mom about. Average food, service, so,so, sat outside, real nice, people friendly. There are better places, and worse places, so for a decent meal, go there. Nice bar area also. Frank G

Excellent food, staff was even better. We had the New York strip and the fish special. One of the best strips I've had, and I'm a steak guy. The fish was cooked just right, still moist yet firm. Too many times fish comes out dry. Good job to the chef and crew.

Stopped in for lunch after visiting the Angel Oak Tree Park. The BLT was the standout of the meal, the bacon is smoked in house and was amazing. The portion was huge, but every last bit was eaten because it was so incredibly good. The fried shrimp were fresh and the fries were addictive, super thin cut and perfectly prepared. The 24 hour pot roast special was amazing. Great little find with very reasonable prices.

We visited Sweeneys for the first time today, for Sunday Brunch. They had an amazing Bloody Mary bar with all the fixings and mimosas that looked divine. We started off with the Banana Bread and Charcuterie Plate, both of which were truly the best I've had. I had the BLT with shoestring French fries, very tasty! My hubs had the fried quail with pimento cheese grits and braised greens with bacon marmalade - YUM! Another friend had the Brisket Benedict which he polished off before I could ask for a bite, so it must have been good. Friendly staff, great outdoor patio - can't wait to go back!

Just stopped in for a late lunch today and have a wonderful time. Highly recommend the BLT or the daily taco special!

Food is very good & the Burger is Fantastic. I think they are a bit expensive & I'd like to see some difference between the lunch & dinner menu. Nice atmosphere & excellent service

Ate on the patio which was quaint and pretty. We had a burger, baked potato soup and braised ribs tacos. Everything was excellent and the service was awesome. Will come back. Would love to see the patio at night.

Such a memorable meal! Everything was artful, delicious and unique. The Bloody Mary bar was a wonderful compliment to the experience. We had a privileged tour of the super clean kitchen ( my friend is related to the chef ) to view the impeccably chosen and fresh produce. I would definitely go again!

We have a large extended family with grandchildren. We always feel welcome and the friendly staff helps us choose foods that the children like. Our favorite times are weekend lunch and especially Sunday brunch. The menu emphasizes local fresh products and recipes that are tasty and nutritious. Their shrimp and grits are my husband's favorite and I think their bacon cheese burger is the best I ever had. Their pig belly bowl is a real treat too. I recommend them all ages!

Living so close to Sweeney's, I really wanted to like it, but everything about our visit was off. We walked in at about 6:30 on a Tuesday and the place was nearly empty- which was fine with us because we appreciated the quiet and were glad we wouldn't feel rushed. Unfortunately, as another reviewer phrased it...service was...strange. Our server seemed to be a bit off and wasn't very friendly. He seemed annoyed when my friend tried to order her salad with an option she had seen on the online menu (not realizing it wasn't on the paper menu)- these things happen. She didn't make a fuss about it or anything. Under the shrimp and angel hair pasta it said there was a vegetarian option so I ordered that, being vegetarian. The server checked that I was not vegan, which I appreciated, though he added that it the pasta was cooked in chicken broth. He said he could see if they could cook with without the chicken broth, which was a nice gesture but he never returned to confirm or deny if that had been done/was possible, instead just bringing the dish. I decided not to press it, but the dish itself was fairly bland and unexciting. My friend got the beet and arugula salad with shrimp and the portion was pretty small. They had us in and out in just under an hour which was a little frustrating as it was empty and we felt a bit pushed along. I get that it was empty and the food came out extremely fast and service moved along quickly, due to having no one else to wait on, but as I said, everything just felt, off. I wouldn't return since both service and the food was unremarkable.

While going through all my checkins after a trip, I honestly could not remember what this place was to write the review. It was in between two stops on our long drive and we needed a bite to eat - the other options nearby not very appealing. Service was... strange. I couldn't tell if the guy was being an jerk on purpose or if this was his version of humor. Food took forever (the power surged, but I'm positive that had nothing to do with the delay). He ignored some things that obviously needed attention (empty drink glasses) yet tried to take my half-finished salad. Our table was wobbly and we asked if that could be fixed; personally I would've moved our party to another table but instead he crossed his arms in front of his chest and blinked his eyes (like a genie), huffed and puffed on his hands and knees (I moved far from the table so there was proper space between my lap and him!) and pretended his back was broken over the ordeal as he stood up, shrugged and yelled into the kitchen something about "that guy [himself] is being weird again". It really was weird though... More weird, there's a board that proclaims all the local ingredients and yet the corned beef on my sandwich was clearly processed, not fresh, and not even very good. The marble rye was good though. The lobster bique was more like tomato soup with the vague essence of lobster. I tried everyone's food - I honestly can't remember it. I do remember the strange person who sort of served us.

You have got to try the Mushroom Toast!! Without a doubt, just order it. The staff here is awesome, friendly, and on top of things. You can tell they enjoy working here. The menu has some really impressive options. My wife ordered the Mahi Mahi special. At the end of the meal, she said "I should have ordered the scallops." I had the shrimp and grits, which is my favorite meal. When the bowl came out it was loaded with shrimp; the most I've ever received. They were deveined and the whole shell was removed. However, the grits were a bit anticlimactic. All in all a very enjoyable experience.

Such an amazing atmosphere.. The staff is top notch and very attentive. The owners are also hands on and make sure your experience is one of a kind. The menu offers a various selection of items that will tantalize your palette and have you coming back for more including their delicious cocktails...The desserts are all made in house and offer variety of homemade items ranging from a slice of homemade pie to decadent cakes as well as an outstanding velvety creme brûlée that you could pair with a nice cup of French press coffee, cappuccino or espresso to finish off your meal..I come here anytime I visit Johns Island in Charleston SC because it's one of those places you will always remember for their food and your experience..

Stopped in to Sweeney's for a drink since it is close to my friend's house. The decor inside is really nice. It looks much more "upscale" than you might expect when you pull into the strip mall. The staff was very friendly. I didn't get a chance to peruse the menu because they took it right away when we said we were only drinking. The bar had a list of happy hour appetizers - none of which seemed that appealing. The first on the list was a brat.

Great little place we checked out on our way to the Angel Tree. No wait. Bloody mary bar is neat and they don't skimp on vodka. We tried the Roast beef with au jus. It was delicious. Fresh ingredients and a very unique menu at a very reasonable price.

Very enjoyable meal. We literally just moved to Johns Island that day and needed someplace to get a meal last minute. The wait was long even though not all the tables were taken, and our waiter seemed a bit flustered, but management kept checking in to make sure we were okay and apologize for the wait. The food was good pub style food. Nothing crazy different, but everything fresh and tasty. We will definitely be going back again.

This place is a hidden gem! For an out of towner, it seemed like it was way off the beaten path, but we really wanted to try it, and we were so glad that we did. There were five of us and every single dish was perfect. Every detail was thought of. My husband ordered the 24 beef roast and it simply melted in the mouth. The food was simply superb. The presentation was amazing and the service was impeccable. The decor was very elegant. The whole evening was wonderful. This will most definitely be on our list to go to every time we come to Kiawah/Charleston, SC. We even got to meet the chef and he was very gracious and welcoming.

Very delicious and unique food selection. Every person out of our party of 8 loved their dinner choices. The staff personable and friendly!

This place is great. Forgot the servers name but she has rocked it out twice now. The food is really good as well. Everyone in group for brunch said there meals were awesome as well. Will definitely be back to try some more dishes.

Could have given it a 5 if our server, Whitley, wasn't such a sourpuss. Never heard the specials - had to ask about the soup of the day and even then she didn't divulge the specials to us - only heard them because of a server telling another table after we had ordered. Anytime we needed anything, we had to ask for it twice - so I just can't give this five stars. Moving on to the food - we ordered the arugula and beet salad (we added shrimp), the shaved Brussels sprout and kale salad, and the salmon chowder soup on special. The food was on point! Good portions and I could have eaten two or three more bowls of that soup! Our other friends had the short rib tacos, the big belly bowl, and the Bloody Mary bar. They loved the tacos but thought that the portions were skimpy for the price - the big belly bowl needed more belly - large amount of potatoes but only three small pieces of pork belly. They did rave about the choices on the Bloody Mary bar - pickled veggies, clamato juice, stuffed olives! We come to charleston a lot so I will definitely be back to try the dinner menu!

When you walk in you receive a very nice welcome and attitude of gratitude that you choose to dine at their restaurant. Service was very attentive and pleasant. I had the short rib taco very tasty. One thing for sure they do a nice job on presentation you may want to also try the Oak syrup pie!

We went during Charleston Restaurant Week with fixed menus. Good food, decent service, but I'm not impressed. Nothing wrong - but nothing to write home about either. The highlight was the key lime pie. THAT was outstanding.
(3)Brian W.
The food was average and waiter, though attentive, not very knowlegeable and had to keep running back to find out information and could not recognize cappuccino from black coffee.

Place was a nice surprise! We were trying to go to another place for Sunday brunch and the wait was more than an hour... Then my friends said 'let's just go down the road... It didn't have any wait and I'm going to bet the good was just as good. Their eggs Benedict were done right, all gooey in the middle... This weeks topper was brisket...and yeah, it was that good. The blueberry pancake was awesome, think of a really good pancake and mate it with a deep dish pizza, that's how the pancake looked. It was delicious, and I'm. It a pancake fan. They had a Bloody Mary bar that was pretty complete and they also had mimosas that were pretty darn good. The service was great. Overall this place has almost been open a year and I'm looking forward to going there again!

Excellent hidden gem! My mom and I had lunch here and we fell in love with this spot! The owner Jim Sweeny is delightful. We had the pimento Mac and cheese , BLT and winter harvest salad. All three dishes were equally delicious!
(5)Susan B.
Googled this place on our way back home from the beach. They had a very nice brunch menu. We had the mimosas, lobster rolls and steak and eggs. Each plate was nicely prepared and it was delicious.
(5)Jonathan T.
Nice place. Outdoor seating was pleasant. Food was good. However, brunch quantities on the Benedict special were a little small. Chili was very good as were the cheeseburgers. Good beer selection. Would definitely return when we are in the area.

Definitely not recommended for large groups of eight or more people. He has the seating capacity to accommodate approximately 70 people but definitely not the expertise or experience in serving larger groups that show up as a group. We are a large group over 40 people and wanted to do lunch near the tea plantation. We called Mr Sweeney several weeks ahead of time and asked him if he could accommodate a group in excess of 40 persons. He said oh yes, no problem at all. Little did we know how wrong he was and that he has no idea how to handle any group over eight people that show up at the same time. Moreover, he does not even have adequate toilet facilities to support the size of his restaurant. There is one commode in the men's room and one in the ladies room, not even one urinal in the men's room, absolutely absurd for a place this large that sells both food and alcohol. Where does he expect a group over 40 people to relieve themselves? We called Mr Sweeney two days before our arrival to reconfirm that he was ready for us, and he assured us he was ready. When we walked in, the first impression was that this is really a small town bar and grill that in no way handles large tour groups on a regular basis, and what next happened proved our suspicions. There were two servers on duty, friendly, but obviously overwhelmed by our large group. It took them over 25 minutes, with Sweeney helping, just to write up all the orders. Then started the long wait for food. About a hour after the last order was taken, the first food started arriving. The single cook was swamped, even with Sweeney helping him. When the first ten people were just about finished eating, the rest of the orders started to arrive. It seemed to go like this, ten orders at a time, with fifteen minute breaks between each ten orders. When the final ten orders arrived, the other 30 members of our group were outside the restaurant walking around and waiting for us. The food was very average, definitely nothing special and absolutely not worth the aggravating long wait. The grilled chicken sandwich was bland, and the burgers were average. Everyone in our group agreed the food was very average, nothing special. I guess we burned up at least two hours or more of our day trying to eat lunch here at Sweeney's. Like I said, maybe Sweeney's is ok for singles and groups of two or three people, but in no way should you consider coming here with a group of more than eight people. The toilet facilities issue alone is wholly inadequate to support large groups, not to mention the lone cook on duty in a small kitchen. What always irks me is when an owner full well knows he is not experienced or capable of handling large groups, goes ahead and assures you he can easily serve large groups, when nothing is further from the truth. Based on our experience, I do not in any way recommend Sweeney's for large groups, and based on the quality of the food, you might want to also consider dining some where else. Most important of all, if you see the place is busy, don't start drinking too much, because with only one commode in the bathroom, you will have a long wait to relieve yourself.

Have been here twice, outrageously great food each time. Recently went for Sunday brunch, had the best meal I've had in Charleston so far. I had their ham, egg, and cheese sandwhich which was like a grilled cheese with ham, a fried egg on top, and cheese sauce drizzled over top. To die for!! Great cocktails, overall awesome place.
