The place is small.reservations are recommended. We went for the outdoor seating which is really lovely and romantic. We had a party of four and there was an issue finding us a table outside because most of them had been reserved. Three out of the four of us ordered appetizers. I had the CAPRESE, which as seen in other reviews is the only appetizer that's really worth getting. the mozzarella was amazing, although one of my tomatoes was definitely not ripe enough. The other two appetizers were eggplant and the beet salad which were nothing special. The entrees are expensive too, I had the beef and pork ravioli and honestly there were 6 or maybe 7 in the plate and it was $19! They were okay. Two people in our party were vegetarians and one was lactose and gluten intolerant. They had plenty of choices for them and offered gluten free pasta. The pumpkin ravioli which was a special that day was decent and my husband ordered the risotto special which was also nothing special. Desserts were either tiramisu or a form of gelato or sorbet. no other options. Tiramisu was decent and my gelato was nothing special, tasty but ordinary. The most satisfying dessert at our table was the coconut sorbet. I don't think I would come here again if i were in the area because there are just so many other options around.

Stumbled across this place in December... literally spotted it while driving down a side street - and what a find! After several nights of fine dining a la low-country, 5-star Charleston foodie festival - we were ready for some Italian. Pane E Vino was a highlight of our trip - had to return, when we came back in April! We loved the fried mushroom appetizer and the calamari was the best I've ever had. Luscious, authentic pasta dishes and wonderful tiramisu. Charming outdoor dining area and live music - with the added perk of meeting the owner. Pane E Vino isn't the ONLY reason we're moving to Charleston... but it's a definite perk!!!

This place was recommended by the 208 kitchen owner. "Eat like one of the locals for the night and taste authentic Italian cuisine." This is a place to relax and enjoy a nice meal with family and friends. From appetizers to dessert, the food was delicious and the atmosphere is cozy. If you are lucky enough you might get to have a shot with your server. The limoncello is refreshing.

I was originally going to write a bad review for this restaurant, but after speaking with the owner, and seeing how kind he was I changed my mind. The first thing I noticed was how small the place was. We almost missed it driving by, but the Italian flag hanging outside have us a clue. We went inside and were greeted and seated. The ambiance is beautiful. A live band was playing and the entire outdoor area was decorated in vines, lanterns, and lights. I ordered the Ravioli alla Casalinga. When it was brought out I was shocked. 6 pieces of ravioli for $18. I ate it anyways and it was delicious, but I was still hungry. I started eating my friends Lasagna which was more filling for less $! I complained to the owner telling him he should at least write that there are only 6 pieces of ravioli for an "entree". He explained that this is the Italian style but he could understand and made it up to us by giving us a round of what seemed to be vodka and lemon. Nice guy. I would definitely come back but would be more careful about asking what the portion sizes are. Finito

Food: good, but definitely not the best in Charleston. Service: absolutely deplorable. Went with a party of eight (with reservations) to celebrate a birthday, and we were the waiter's only table. We saw the server twice the entire meal. Had to actually get up and look at the beer options on the bar ourselves because the waiter didn't know them, and later had to go flag down another server to get drinks refilled. I will never go back, and would strongly discourage anyone from going...unless having an empty wine glass while enjoying a somewhat cold $30 entrée is your kind of night out.

Best place in town! Food, atmosphere and the owner's awesome.. Can't believe a 3 star reviews was made by a vegetarian.... and gluten intolerant. Sure they should be able to come to an Italian or French restaurant but come on... don't come and share reviews about italian food. Also complaining that the ravioli portion was small... 6-7 raviolis are enough. The idea behind it is that you have an apetizer, then a main course then a dessert. You don't try to stuff yourself with one dish...

Great place, tucked off upper King Street. Nice indoor and outdoor seating. Service was ok. The menu wasn't large, but they had a wide variety so it made up for it. The food was excellent - eggplant starter, lasagna and penne with sausage. No beer on tap but good selection of bottled beer and great wines. Even with all the great choices downtown and new places opening all the time on upper King, we'll be back!

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, the atmosphere and the staff of this cozy restaurant that evokes feelings of actually being in Italy. The entire staff was friendly, attentive and helpful. The owner even helped us with parking! Our waiter (bearded gentleman who's name sadly, has been forgotten) was perfect, made excellent recommendations of food AND wine. He even brought out the bottle of house Pinot Grigio for me to take a photo of because I loved it! Caprese, Carbonara and salads were all delicious. The prices are surprisingly moderate for Charleston. I would definitely go back. The only weird thing was that they brought only two (delicious) rolls for 4 people...other than that great meal and ambiance.

Once again I took friends to this gem of a restaurant. The food was great as always. We ordered the house red wine, which I really did not care for. They must have changed it from the last time I was there. My only other issue was that they had the air conditioner on too low. It was a hot night. It could have been adjusted to allow for the heat. But once again, they did not let me down. Frankg

Loved, loved, loved the lasagna and the calamari. The other dishes I tried were actually not memorable - I went in November and can't remember what me, my husband or stepmom got. But I do remember feeling very strongly that a) the lasagna was the best thing I tried, and b) Al Di La is much better, especially when you consider the bang for your buck. The service was mediocre at best. We went early in the evening so it was pretty quiet - I'll definitely be going back for the live music on their patio on a weekend. Wine + calamari + music = happy Liz.

We never would have stumbled on to Pane E Vino if we were not staying at a hotel in the north part of the Charleston. While we were not very happy with the hotel, we were very happy to have found this restaurant. The restaurant is located in a quaint little building in a mixed business/residential area. I understand that they also have nice outdoor seating, but we were there on a cold and rainy evening, so I can't speak from experience. The service was top notch. There was one waiter and two waitresses working that evening. Our waiter was very attentive and helpful in making our dinner selections. The two waitresses also stepped in to help when needed, so the service was always smooth and efficient. The food was even better than the service. My wife claimed that her calamari appetizer, with a balsamic vinegar, honey and black pepper sauce was the best calamari she had ever had. It was a beautiful presentation with the calamari and a little salad, and it could have sufficed as a main course. I started with a puree of bean soup topped with truffle oil. It was delicious and warmed me up on a cold and damp evening. I used the bread to insure that I didn't leave any behind. For a main course, my wife had the Gnocchi alla Sorrentina, gnocchi in a bolognese sauce with buffalo mozzarella. The gnocchi tasted homemade and the bolognese sauce tasted fresh and delicious. My main course was Pappardelle con L'Anatra, a roasted duck leg (very much like duck confit) in a mushroom cream sauce. The duck and sauce were both delicious. The menu says the pappadelle pasta is homemade, it definitely has that homemade taste and was cooked perfectly. We drank a liter of the house red. It was young tasting, in the way that a Beaujolais Nouveau is young tasting, but was good and very drinkable. For dessert we shared three scoops of delicious Nutella gelato. The only caveat I have is that finding parking in the neighborhood is VERY difficult, so if you are driving, make sure to give yourself plenty of time to find a place to park.

Came here on a recommendation from our AirBNB host and was a bit disappointed. It was fairly expensive for what you got overall. My wife got a gnocchi dish and had spaghetti alla bolognese. It was just OK to both of us. We've had similar dishes at other places and the flavors were just not there for us here. I do not believe we'll be returning the next time were are in town. Staff was friendly and helpful however. We did manage to get reservations but were seated at the outdoor bar. There were 4 open tables behind us that no one sat at during our time there so that was a bit of a disappointment. Oh and my wife looked at the online menu prior to us making reservations and the are lower then what was on the actual menu in the restaurant.

Wonderful, special, and decidedly different Italian with some unique appetizers and salads. Checked Yelp after our hotel 's recommendation and decided to try this lovely, cozy family owned restaurant. There is just something about a satisfying plate of pasta and Pane E Vino provided that ...... Something. Sorry not to provide a photo, but we couldn't wait to eat !

great Italian place. Does not try to be pretentious. Great outside courtyard with live music. We had an awesome fun waitress and the food was very good. I would recommend the fungi fritt, calamari, and ravioli. Great date spot.

Pane E Vino is a family favorite. The first time I ate at PEV was on a first date with a guy looking to propose ASAP so I don't remember much of the meal other than trying to end it as soon as possible. The last two times I've gone with my Italian family. My dad, who makes his own Italian everything, RAVES about the spot. It's tucked romantically off the main road and has an awesome outdoor section. The Italian manager/owner is usually floating around checking in on guests and making recommendations. The wine list was great. Last time we got a few bottles of Travaglini Gattinara. A little pricey but just superb. Very worth it. Our service was fantastic. We started with caprese salad- the mozzarella was savory. Then, I got the creamy mushroom dish with sausage. Amazing. Amazing. AMAZING. absolutely delicious. I eat Italian out a lot and not many meals have compared to this dish. Everyone else in my party raved about their dishes as well. Will DEFINITELY be back!

This is a lovely, tucked-away restaurant just off of King Street. It's small, cozy and also happens to have some of the best Italian food in town. The service is top-notch and the owner is just an absolutely cool guy who clearly loves his restaurant. I hate that the location in Mt. Pleasant closed, but I preferred the atmosphere at the downtown location a little better. I've tried most of the menu and haven't found a weak spot...but I always go back to either the pesto or checca pastas. Their house made borrata is amazing; it's always there as a special and definitely worth trying. And when the weather is right, definitely sit on the outdoor patio!

Live a few blocks from here and always walked by it. Finally decided to try it, even though some of the Yelp reviews about iffy service made me nervous. Made a reservation for a patio table on a Friday night, showed up with two minutes to spare and was seated right away at a lovely table on the patio. Server was excellent, didn't hover but was always there to refill the wine and check in to make sure we were good. Three of us split two aps - mussels & carpaccio, both excellent - and had risotto special, gnocchi gorgonzola and chicken milanese respectively. Everything was perfectly on point and delicious, and the portions were great. We each tried a bit of the other's plates and loved everything. Between the three of us, our bill was 160 (2 aps, 4 glasses of wine, 3 entrees) and worth every penny. Glad I ignored the reviews and gave this place a shot. It was awesome!. I will definitely be back.

A great find, off the beaten path. Especially savored the Penne Alla (?) Maremmana, and found the caprese salad to be something special, too. The waiter's wine recommendation was spot-on. Service was attentive, personalized, and reasonably efficient. A bonus: we learned about "confederate jasmine"!

I must say, my girlfriends and I were so excited to experience this restaurant. I wish I could say it was just the food that lacked flavor. Unfortunately, the serving staff did, too. They were extremely sour and condescending. The only good thing was the ambience and the calamari. I will not be going back unless they learn how to season and smile. Hands down, worst servers I've ever experienced.

This place was greatly under staffed. Bread was rock hard, so hard it hurt my tooth. Main dish was okay. I would not go back here. The waitress was very nice is the only good thing I can say.

I was so pleasantly surprised with everything at Pane E Vino! Great service, greeted by the owner, food was outstanding! The building is unbelievably charming with both an inside and outside section complete with stringed lights and live music. I can't wait to go back!

This little Italian place is a gem! The food was great, I had the duck leg with parpadelle in mushroom sauce. Service was fantastic, the waiter was very well trained. The owner was super friendly and welcoming. They had live music which added even more to the already romantic atmosphere. Will definitely return!

One of the best meals in recent memory. We had the spaghetti alla checca and spaghetti al pesto. They were both simple and delicious. Superior service (and I'm a former waitress; I don't take waiting tables lightly). I am seriously considering making another visit here during our stay.

Good, quick service and great food. It was really hot outside so we chose to sit inside though I think the outdoor atmosphere would have been better as it gets very loud inside. The burrata special was the best burrata we've ever had. Split the gnocchi in bolagnese to start, quite tasty. Gnocchi was perfectly cooked. I had the lasagna which was quite good and boyfriend had salmon which was good too. Burrata was something special though. Definitely would recommend.

Wow, we were at a Yelp event at Indigo and Cotton and were planning on going out after. I yelped and found this place that I have been to in the past but always forget the name. I entered Italian and close by and it popped up. Had family in town and wanted some good Italian. I called directly from Yelp and found out they had available seating and they held it for us for 5 minutes till we got there. Liter of House Red Wine was perfect. we started with the calamari appetizer. Fantastic. I was jonesing for fresh pasta. I got the special with lamb and pasta. I was not disappointed one bit. The rest of the table got different pastas and everyone was quite pleased. Reminded them of Italy!! Ended the night with the Tiramisu. Wow, I don't think I have had this good a batch of that in a long time. May have been Italy. This place exceeded my expectations. Just wish I could remember the name of this place. Ugh! Thanks to Yelp I was able to figure it out.

They food was great! Atmosphere was some what peaceful and romantic. The waiters/waitresses were very polite when they checked in. There assists spent more time checking on us but overall it was a fun romantic night.

Delicious food! However, the service is pretty terrible. You become more acquainted with the "server assistants" than your actual waiter/waitress. First time I've left a tip less than 20% ever.. With that being said, it didn't ruin my meal.

  • Andie C.

Be sure to sit outside. Fresh flavors, similar to those I had when traveling through Italy. Great service. Local hidden gem. The caprese salad was perfect. Tomato soup was full of bold flavors. Save room for dessert...the tiramisu was delicious, creamy, and moist!

Best gnocchi I've ever had! The Gorgonzola sauce was creamy but not overly rich, perfectly accenting the fresh arugula tossed with it. Service was pleasant although at the beginning of the meal I ordered a salad which was never brought out - fine because I wasn't charged and the delicious gnocchi made up for my annoyance. Wine list was affordable and comprehensive. Atmosphere romantic and comfortable. Definitely not to be missed, better experience than some of the hyped up places nearby.

Always amazing! Love this restaurant, the owner and the atmosphere. Always feel welcome and at home here. The food is amazing, from the antipasto, bruschetta to Caprese salad you cannot go wrong. The smoked duck breast on flat bread is nothing short of amazing, and the Scamorza Grigliata fabulous! They have simply the best Cioppino I have ever had. I have gone with and taken friends and each time left with a great meal experience while having a great time. I would highly recommend. Too bad the Mt. Pleasant location is no longer in existence. It was much closer but this one is worth the drive!

Perfect little - hidden gem! You have to know it's there, but once you do, you will never forget it. Busy race weekend but was able to secure to seats at the bar. Scott the bartender did a great job! The outdoor dining area is very nice and the live music is a nice touch. The foods was amazing. Definitely give it a try.

We found this place on yelp while touring Charleston for the weekend. After our meal, we all agreed that it was some of the best italian we had ever had. I wish it were in my home town! The gnocci was the most delicious I had ever tasted! We walked in and they accommodated us with a table, but I would suggest getting a reservation because it seems like we got lucky. Our server was very knowledgeable and nice. I can't say much about the decor. Average I suppose.

We were looking for an unpretentious but good restaurant during our visit to Charleston. We found it here. The food was very good, the wines nice. I had the spinach ravioli and it was delicious. The tomatoes in our caprese salad were garden fresh. The tenderloin was nicely done as was the sautéed spinach. It was a hot night and the room got a little close but others enjoyed the outside dining and live music. Friendly and attentive staff, nice atmosphere...clearly a number of folks there with friends and families. We'd go again!

They were busy when we got there so we had a slow start. We sat at the bar and the excellent service from the bartender Scott and the phenomenal food made up for it. The Gnocchi with Bolognese sauce and Buffalo Mozzarella was incredible. We want to come back to sample other menu items.

This is a hidden gem in Charleston! The building is quaint or dated depending on your perspective. The service was OK, not the best I've had, but by no means the worst. I do want to say that the owner saw a potential problem (our table was crowded by a party at an adjacent table) immediae and positive action to correct things. The food was awesome! I and my daughter had the carbonara, my wife had the gnocchi, and both were terrific. The music on the patio was excellent! My daughter lives in the dorm across the street and she turned us on to this place. Its off the beaten path, but worth finding! We'll be back!

Food was great, service was to. Outside seating is a great option my only complaint was the hand written bill. I ask for a recheck and the sales tax was written as a percentage and not dollar amount. No adding machine tape or much of an explanation. felt a little unconforable .

I am Italian. I lived in New York, Boston, San Francisco and Europe. I love authentic Italian, but am highly critical. People love my kitchen. Since living in SC, i have developed the motto, no OPP, other peoples pasta. I hardly ever write a review. I was deeply impressed with Pane e Vino. Good wine list, not overly marked up. The sharcuterie was to die for. All top quality meats with no cheap fillers. Get the large portion. The pastas are made with fresh ingredients and al dente. Our server Civia, as well as all other staff, were knowledgeable and friendly. The dining room is a set back to the romantic Italian restaurants in Greenwich Village.

The service was terrible. Food fair at best. Would not go back. There were 6 of us. None of the dishes or drinks came out at same time. Gratuity added and fir one person a 40% amount.

Tucked away off King Street on Warren, this little gem of a place is rarely talked about among Charlestonians and I was eager to find out why. While it was hard for me to stray away from my two favorite Italian joints in the city, Trattoria Lucca and Indaco, someplace I have never been always deserves at least one trip in my opinion. Upon arriving, I couldn't believe how quaint and charming the intimate outdoor dining area was, adorned with lights and perfect for a date. I went with my friend and split a bottle of wine, the duck flatbread and ordered the Duck Pasta for my entrée. What can I say- I'm obsessed with Duck lately. Both dishes were disappointingly lacking in flavor, with my pasta doused in a soupy cream sauce that was way off texturally. It's hard for me to judge the food based off just one trip, but from what I have heard from friends, Pane E Vino is very hit or miss. Our service was ok but my friends have also told me that can be very hit or miss as well. And in a town like Charleston where better Italian joints are within walking distance- hit or miss doesn't warrant a trip back for me. If the prices were competitive a trip back may be worth it, but considering the appetizers were around $13 and pastas around $20, my recommendation is to spend a bit extra and have a great Italian meal at Trattoria Lucca or Indaco.

Good bar and great patio dining. Quiet, unassuming location very near King Street but away from bustle of the crowds. Food is good basic Italian fare with a complementary wine selection. Restaurant is conversation-friendly. One of the best value-for-money downtown dining spots. I always recommend it to friends visiting Charleston.

If the chef is from Italy he must have only been born there and certainly not raised there. The food is NOT authentic Italian whatsoever. Chicken Milanese was more like southern fried chicken...and it had no salad on it. Their "Ragu" is an overly sweet red sauce with whatever meat simply added to it as opposed to cooked in it for hours. Their homemade pappardelle was tasteless and had no texture. I just returned from a 2 week trip to Tuscany and thank God the food didn't taste like this. Will not return.

My friends and I dined here on Saturday night and were extremely disappointed, given the great reviews and the word of mouth this place gets. Unfortunately, I can't recommend the food or the service, not even the management. We made a reservation for 8:30pm, to sit on the patio. The reservation was for 5 people. We chose the restaurant because of the outdoor seating as well as the supposedly incredible food. We arrived at 8:28pm. When we arrived, the hostess told us she didn't have a table for us outside, did we want to sit inside. We explained that we chose this restaurant because we could get a table outside. She explained that an earlier party had showed up 1 hour late for their reservation, and so she seated them at our table (instead of explaining that they missed their reservation, as woudl have been proper protocol). She came back a few minutes later and told us she could seat us at a four top. Five people, at a table for four. We declined, because the four top tables actually don't even look comfortable for four people- we saw that most of them had just two diners at them. We asked if she could put two of the smaller tables together, since there were 4 open on the patio. But she said those were reserved for other parties. She then told us we could wait at the bar, that there were some seats open. But when we got to the bar, there were just two seats, at opposite ends of the bar. We asked to speak with the manager, and the hostess assured us she was the manager. After much eye-rolling and nasty looks as we stood at the bar waiting, she put two tables together and sat us. And then we waited for someone to serve us. And we waited, and waited. Finally, the same manager came over, and told us there wasn't a server available, they were short that evening. And then proceeded to tell us the specials... And then we waited and waited and waited some more. We asked for some bread, and received four rolls, for five people. When we finally got served, our appetizers came out at different times, waitresses came by with other tables' orders and tried to serve them to us... it was chaos. The patio itself is lovely and the weather was beautiful and the music was good, but it couldn't make up for the poor management. More disappointing still, was our food. We started with the BRUSCHETTA ALLA SICILIANA, which had no basil, oregano, salt, pepper, or garlic... We also got the CHEESE PLATE, served with no mention of what the cheeses were, and the CAPRESE salad, which was the only notable appetizer among the three. Nice sized portion, mozzarella was creamy, tomatoes were seasoned... We got a carafe of house wine, which was a chianti, and it was great. Delicious in fact. Two people in my party got pasta- PAPPARDELLE CON L'ANATRA and PAPPARDELLE ALL' ANTICA- the pasta is made fresh from a local shop, and my friends said it was good. Nice sized portions, meat cooked well, adequate sauce... Another person got the COTOLETTA ALLA MILANESE, and thought it was delicious. She got it with a side of pasta instead of the mashed potatoes. And then another friend and I split the CIOPPINO for two. It was not something I'd ever recommend. We ordered a side of pasta with it, and were SHOCKED to find that it cost $8. That is ludicris. It was boxed spaghetti with flavorless marinara. Total cost to cook- $0.65. The didn't even give us the fresh pasta... The Cioppino itself was the worst cioppino I have ever had. And, it was not two portions- my friend and I left the table still hungry. We had 3 scallops in the entire dish. THREE. Plus, it was flavorless. Not one hint of garlic or spice. It was boiled seafood. We were going to send it back, but there was no waiter or waitress in sight, and the manager was so hostile earlier, we didn't think she'd take it back. So we walked away hungry. We also didn't bother with dessert. The meal was so underwhelming, and the service was so subpar, we couldn't wait to leave. We truly wished we had gone to Indaco instead, which was another recommendation we were considering.

This place had the MOST AMAZING ravioli ever. I cannot remember the name of what I ordered but it had beef, pork, and raisins in the ravioli. It was to die for. Best pasta I have ever had hands down. If you are hungry I would suggest an appetizer as well. Portions are similar to other fine dining establishments and they serve bread before the meal as well. I cannot wait to visit this place again on my next trip to Charleston!

Delicious food, great service, very friendly. Accommodated large party very well. Eggplant appetizer was very good. Lasagna and chicken dinners were terrific. Good wine list with nice price ranges. Outdoor seating looked nice but sat inside due to potential storms - small and authentic italian. Don't miss this gem.

If you want the Italian atmosphere, Pane E Vino is a great place to be. The outdoor seating as well as the indoor seating is very peaceful. The ambiance is great. The food is also amazing. This place is definitely a hidden gem and a great place to go on a date.

Pane E Vino was an awesome Italian experience for me and my friends. I loved the intimate environment, as well as the beautiful outdoor seating arrangement! For an appetizer, I had the house-made burrata with arugula. This was the first time I had ever had burrata, so I am probably nostalgically biased, but it was so so SO creamy and good and is still the best burrata I have ever had. For a main course, I had the Papardelle Con L'Anatra which is a papardelle dish with duck and a mushroom sauce. This was the a phenomenal pasta dish and one of many reasons to revisit the beautiful city of Charleston. Up there with Giulia in Cambridge, MA, which won best restaurant of 2014 in Boston Magazine.

This place used to be hott, but it has gone waaay downhill. Poor service seems to have become standard in Charleston and this place certainly showed it: total disinterest in the customer. Pesto pasta tasted like it could have come from a frozen dinner package. We were seated outside and asked at one point, because it was warm and some ladies were getting bitten by bugs, if the fan by the unoccupied bar could be moved over near us. "Lemme check" and then nothing again about that. The fan continued to blow a nice breeze over the totally empty bar area (we were the only people on the entire patio) for our entire dinner. Just one example of the sorely lacking and unenthusiastic service.

Absolutely amazing. Alfredo is one of the most engaging genuine owners I have ever met. His heart is in every dish drink and experience. Bravo! My new go to spot! The calamari was crisp and flash fried to perfection followed by a rich and delightful seafood risotto special. Finished with a delicious limoncello and tiramisu. Great friends and food.

My boyfriends family and my family came here for dinner it was absolutely amazing. Great service, had live music, and the food was so amazing. The gnoochi was out of this world. And to top it all off the outdoor atmosphere was beautiful we loved it will definitely be back.

Consistently Incredible food. Met the owner. I know why everything is so good. He seems to have a hand in the quality of every dish. So flavorful. Two great things of Italian origin in Charleston. Spoleto festival and Alfredo Temelini of Pano e Vino. Also can eat paleo/primal/gluten free.

We have been going here for years...our fave restaurant that we alway recommend to out of town guests. No more. After about a year away we decided to have a nice and rare dinner date night. So excited and we started off well. The lobster bisque was fantastic. But the Funghi Fritti (deep fried mushrooms) were surprisingly flavorless. We politely expressed our concern to the waitress who offered no real solution or offered something else. We were told the specials (and being frequent patrons we knew the pasta prices were always VERY reasonable). We ordered the special mushroom risotto and another pasta, the carbonara (which as usual was delicious). The risotto was very disappointing..crunchy and lacking ANY flavor. It resembled a boxed five minute rice you'd buy at the store. It was terrible. We also ordered another wine with dinner when the food arrived and proceeded to watch our waitress stand and talk at another table for our ENTIRE entree meal and she never brought the wine. She said she had forgotten but in fact she was too busy socializing to come back to our table. Being frequent diners we were surprised too that she didn't return to offer fresh bread, fresh cracked pepper or even water... Finally we received the bill and were very shocked to find the mushroom risotto was $25!!!! If you are going to offer a mushroom risotto pasta special for 25 friggin' dollars you should give your patrons a heads up when you explain the specials. I could go a few blocks down to Lana and get a far superior risotto for half that price. We expressed or surprise to the waitress who responded 'Hey I don't make the prices'. She then retuned to our table with a nasty attitude and dumped the bill on our table and very curtly said, 'I took a glass off your bill' and quickly walked away. There must be some new management at this formerly charming and lovely spot because the food, service and prices were always spot on. What a disappointment after long anticipation to finally come back. I won't recommend it to anyone now. :(

I wanted to love this place. I really did. After my visit to Italy I would have loved to find an authentic Italian restaurant with Italian welcome and atmosphere. Unfortunately it is NOT at Pan E Vino. We have been three times now and each time, hoping to fall in love, we order in true Italian style: to enjoy the food, wine and company. Each time we are rushed out the door. Even with bills adding up to over $300 our welcome seems to be overstayed within an hour and a half. Either take less reservations or note that you will have a limited time to dine but don't make your customers feel unwelcome. Good luck Alfredo- we will be dining at your competitors from here out. Prego!

If you have last minute dinner plans and want the best italian meal in Charleston, this is the spot! The ambience in the court yard is wonderful and the owner is extremely friendly and will probably bring a limoncello shot on the house. Shockingly, there is rarely a wait, so this is a very convenient spot for last minute plans. The mozzarella in the caprese is out of this world!

I must say my wife and I are pretty picky about Italian food because she cooks authentic Italian so almost everywhere we go we end up being disappointed. But this little place is as authentic as it gets, the place is owned by a Sicilian, who is always there and makes the tiramisu and limoncello himself among other things. All of our food was great and service was outstanding. Can't wait to go back.

I hate to only give 3 stars, as this restaurant has been one of my Charleston Favorites for years. However, the service was so bad during my last visit, that I have to. First courses not delivered at the same time (2 salads came a good 5 to 10 minutes after others), my wine glass sat empty for 20 to 30 minutes until I finally flagged hime down to request another. When I finally received it and questioned what it was to my table mate, he shoved the bottle in front if my face to prove it was what I had been drinking. Rude. To top it off, my friend asked the manager for his card so she could email him about the service. He stood and badgered her until she voiced her grievances immediately. It was weird. The food was good, but overshadowed by slow, off-beat service and attention.

Great, old-school feel, in a random neighborhood off the beaten path. It's been there for a long time, has inside and outside seating, small bar, and real solid Italian food in a quaint atmosphere. If you are looking for classic Italian food, with a few twists, at an affordable price, then this is a great choice that shouldn't disappoint. We don't have many choices for Italian downtown, and this is a welcome spot. Great service and great for a date, family, or work engagement.

One of my best friends mentioned that she wanted Italian for her birthday dinner. After reading the reviews and speaking to our other friends, we were excited about choosing Pane e Vino for the celebration. I called on Thursday and made a reservation for 10 people for 7:30pm Saturday night. I called and reconfirmed on Friday and everything was good to go. When we arrived Saturday, I waited at least 5 min before a host/hostess came to the host table; no clue how long the couple in front of me had been waiting. Another 5 min after the couple was seated, the gentleman came back to the hostess table and I let him know I was there for our 7:30pm reservation......he had no clue what I was talking about, and this was the same guy that took my reservation or someone with a strikingly similar accent. He ran around for a while, doing who knows what, and then asked me to walk with him to the bar. There, he showed me his reservation book which did not have our group written anywhere in it. After another 10-15 min of trying to figure out what to do, he finally said he has a table outside. He led us outside, pass the empty tables near the heat warmers which could have accommodated 10 easily, to the tables in the back that happened to be just NOT close enough to the heaters to make a difference for us. After sitting there for a few minutes with the cold wind blowing, we decided that this was not going to be a comfortable meal. I let the gentleman know and he responded with a "Kanye" shrug, as if to say, "oh well, what do you want me to do". I didn't appreciate his lack of care or concern in his response. I gave them 2 stars bc the food smelled really amazing and I wish I had the opportunity to taste how that translated on the plate, but unfortunately, the mishandling of our situation has me leery of a return visit.

Excellent meal on the patio. Pane E Vino was a short walk from where we stayed. It was a homey type restaurant. It had a small interior, but a huge outdoor courtyard where all the action was. We sat out there and enjoyed the live music while we ate fresh papparedelle (4.5*'s) with mushrooms and duck leg confit, which seemed like an odd combo but was outstanding. The cioppino.was over cooked making some of the seafood rubbery but the broth was pretty good, 3 *'s. Nice wine list as well.

This restaurant offered the poorest level of service that I have experienced in Charleston. I called this restaurant and explained that I was leaving play nearby and wanted to know if they would be able to accommodate us as I was concerned that they closed in an hour. I explained that we would arrive in ten minutes and that there were only 2 people in my party. I was assured that time was not an issue and that the staff would be, as the person on the phone said, "expecting [us]". Within ten minutes I arrived and waited for 5 minutes before anyone acknowledged that we had arrived. I asked a server if we should seat ourselves and he replied that he would have to check to see if we could be seated. After an inspection of the dining room, there were two tables seated. The restaurant was otherwise empty. The server vanished for 5 minutes and re-appeared. He explained that we could be seated. Next a different server approached our table and asked if we would like anything to drink. I replied that we would like two camparis on the rocks with a splash of soda. For a restaurant that bills itself as authentic Italian, I would imagine that this would be a simple request, but it was an ordeal that took another 20 minutes for the staff to figure out. While three workers chatted and laughed behind the bar we waited and waited. We noticed that after 15 minutes our server appeared at the bar, poured our drinks, and then vanished. Our drinks sat at the bar for 5 minutes before they were brought to our table. After we received our drinks, we ordered our food. We ordered bruschetta. The bruschetta turned out to be soggy. It seemed as if it had been sitting around for a few hours before it was brought to our table. The entrees we ordered were perfect. Following the same pattern throughout the evening our server vanished after our entrees were brought out and we waited at least 30 minutes after we finished our entree to get our check. When we asked for our check the server made a snappy reply: "No desert? Quick and easy....just as I like." I didn't find the comment amusing. A day after my visit, I wrote the owner a letter and mailed it to the address published on the restaurant's website. I carefully explained that overall our food was excellent (with the exception of the appetizer). I also explained that I didn't think the service that they offered was a match with the price that they charge. I asked for phone call or a reply. It has been two months. I have received neither. The staff seems apathetic to any concerns their patrons may have. For a restaurant that claims to be award winning, the only award I can give is the poorest service ever award. If the level of service improved I would increase my rating.

I went there with a bunch of buddies while on summer vacay. I was circumspect that I might not have any vegetarian options, but I was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is on a quiet street and has a very interesting setting. Really enjoyed the food, and the hostess was terrific.

I've been here a couple times and can honestly say that my last time here sort of ruined it for me. A word on the pros: I really like the music that they have there live-- they bring in really talented musicians on a regular basis. The outdoor patio is also BEAUTIFUL! The bad side: When I came back again during the week not so long ago, it was completely empty, sans about 4 tables (between 2 servers, mind you), however our completely disinterested server had trouble with remembering to do basic things, like bringing us the wine we ordered. I was annoyed when he a) didn't offer salt or pepper with our dishes, b) when he never came back to ask us how our food was, and c) only brought the pepper I had asked for once my food was cold and I had only a bite left to eat. The SA (or other server? not sure) had to clear the table for him, while he wandered around aimlessly and seemed to completely avoid eye contact with us. He took forever to bring us back our check, which normally wouldn't have been a big deal if we had been drinking and enjoying our time there, but we were running late for a movie and needed to go. The food was fine, but I honestly don't see it worth the hassle of having a server as indifferent as the one we had. To sum it up: great music, okay good, absolutely terrible service.

Our visit was a mixture of good and bad experience. First of all to find parking starts you off a negative. It is a stressful process and you should allow ample time to accomplish this. We were seated right away in a most pleasant environment with a fantastic ambiance. We were served bread and water promptly and our waitress showed up in reasonable time. The food was very good although not to the quality I had expected based on reviews I had read. Even still it would have been a delightful evening if we had ever seen our waitress again. After taking our order she was inundated with more tables than she could handle. Thus we finished our meal, asked the bus person for our check and then went to the front desk and requested someone please process our payment. Overall, on a scale of 1-5, accessibility.2, food 4, ambiance 4, and service 2.

Easily one of the best Italian restaurants I have ever been to. I absolutely loved how they had actual Northern and Southern Italian food, instead of the standard American-Italian food. We had the Casoncelli All'alpina, Gnocchi Alla Sorrentina, and Bruschetta. The Casoncelli had such a variety of flavors and textures that flowed extremely well together for an exciting experience with every bite. Service was superb! They were all very friendly AND efficient. The ambiance was homey, like you were having dinner in someone's own home--which you are! Live jazz gives it an even more soothing feel along with the locals and owners speaking Italian to each other. Overall: INCREDIBLE! (and I'm VERY critical of Italian--it has to be done like in Italy!)

Had a terrible 8 hour drive into Charleston thanks to snow, rain, ice, hail and what ever else Winter-Storm Leon had to offer and asked my wife to pick out where ever she wanted to go to dinner at. Thankfully her love of Italian cuisine brought us to Pane e Vino and even more thankfully it was open despite the terrible conditions outside. I called beforehand to confirm them being open, as well as parking considerations and to see if there was a need for reservations; the young man who answered the phone had great manners and was extremely insightful recommending we walk from our bed and breakfast. The restaurant was empty except for one other couple dinning when arrived at 7pm, thanks in part to the storm no doubt. Despite this fact we were jovially greeted by the two wait staff there and promptly offered a table of our choosing. The interior is warm and welcoming with an american Italian decor and they had Frank Sinatra playing on the radio adding to the experience, sorry even though i'm 29 I still love some Frank!!! The wine list was a bit above average and fairly priced, and when the bottle we asked for was no longer available our waiter who was excellent (more to follow on that) easily suggested a substitute which both my wife and I enjoyed very much. Also i asked for a port for dessert and while they didn't have one I was offered the waiters preference for a substitute which I was afforded a sample prior to ordering and was very impressed! In the food department the menu was very traditional high end American Italian Cuisine, lots of pastas, standard appetizers, meat and fish dishes but still very diverse as there were about 4 different menu items that I was considering. My wife and I both ordered appetizers as we were famished from our long car ride, she got the bruschetta which she described as delicious, and I ordered a calamari appetizer which was surprisingly lightly breaded and had an exceptional balsamic vinaigrette reduction on it. For dinner my wife choose an eggplant dish which she said was fresh and done exceptionally well. I had a dish of braised lamb meat it in a marina rosemary sauce with flat noodles (forget the specific name), which was fantastic. The lamb was tendered and cooked to perfection and the rosemary in the sauce was a great compliment to the meat. For dessert my wife ordered a tiramisu which she refused to share do to it being so good. The staff was excellent, attentive and friendly my wife are in a our late 20s and as we were in the restaurant with only one other dinner we carried on conversations with the staff learning about Charleston through out our time there. They were well versed in the menu as well as wine pairings and gave great suggestions and were never one to rush us along. My ONLY complaint is the bread provided with dinner could be of higher quality that is all. If we are in Charleston again we will be coming back!

The food was decent and the waitress was nice but the service was INCREDIBLY slow. We had 8:15 reservations for a party of 12. They had two tables of 6 set up so we had to wait for them to put the two tables together. Also, I understand it takes time to serve and split up that many checks but we waited over an hour after we ordered for our food. And then another 45 minutes for our check. One of our party complained and they sent over complimentary sparkling wine which was nice but we were trying to leave at that point. After another 20 minutes of waiting, the same person complained to the owner and the owner was incredibly rude to her. He asked 'you're single aren't you? of course you are', said she was pissing him off, told her to sit down and shut up. She went to sit down and he said F-you as she was walking away. He said next time we come to Charleston we should eat at Carrabba's. I think that would have been a much better choice. Don't eat here and support this horrible man.

The Restuarant was recommended by a friend who said it had great ambience. We made reservatons but when we arrrived and asked for "Outside" we were told we should have requested to be outside and if we wanted to wait it would be 20 minutes. We sat inside and subsequently wathched all but one older couple escorted outside, Some being asked "inside or out". The lamb pasta was good but over seasoned. The pasta was fresh and well prepared. The fish "trio" was Ok. The salmon with pesto was exceptional but the scallops and local fish were not great.Service "inside" was slow and not attentive.

I was in Charleston for the Wine and Food Festival and we went to Pane e Vino. The ambiance was warm though slightly outdated. The salad came drenched in oil and the bruschetta was soggy. One person in our party ordered the cioppino as it is her favorite. This is where our meal went south. It was very fishy and she decided on sending it back. This is where it turned into an bad episode of Kitchen Nightmares. The owner came out angrily and said there was nothing wrong with it and said that he was not going to take it off the check. WE REFUSED AND THE GUY ACTUALLY KICKED US OUT OF THE RESTAURANT. My 9 year old niece who was with us said it best - "What does this guy want to do drive himself out of business?" Unbelievable. Well, I'd like to have a better story to get kicked out of the my first restaurant but all we did was not like one of this guys dishes.

Our party of five had a delightful meal in their courtyard. Everyone raved about their dishes. I enjoyed the RAVIOLI ALLA CASALINGA (Homemade Spinach/Ricotta ravioli, served in a light smoked prosciutto "Speck" and asparagus cream sauce) & the GNOCCHI ALLO ZOLA (Homemade potato dumplings in a creamy gorgonzola sauce, folded with fresh arugola) was reported to be the best in the US. The severe were laid back, but that did not detract from the delicious food.

On Warren but right off King, this place is great for delicious, fresh Italian food. Every dish I have tried is full of flavor. I have always had attentive service and never been disappointed! It's cozy inside and has a romantic patio. This is one of my favorite places to eat in Charleston, the crustini with fig and gorgonzola is awesome! I recommend this place to everyone I know who is looking for good quality food and service, reasonable prices for a nice place, and a wonderful dining experience!

Great Italian food that doesn't kill the bank. Alfredo, the owner, is very attentive and the ambiance is super romantic. Sit outside if the weather is nice to enjoy the live music and lights. Order the house wine - it's a great deal - and the mussels a diavola are the best mussels in town.....even better than Rue de Jean's. Can't say enough good things.....I have traveled to Italy many times and Pane e Vino does the genre justice.

We went to this restaurant with a family group of 17 people. We were there to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of my in-laws. Our hotel concierge had recommended the restaurant and we were excited that we were only 3 blocks away and within easy walking distance. My in-laws are Italian so we also thought the choice was appropriate. The food is very good, with everyone enjoying their meal. The calamari appetizer was a little chewy, but has an interesting balsamic sauce drizzled over the top. The grilled salmon with pesto special was excellent. Others in my party were pleased with the meat lasagna, pesto pasta, and the spinach ravioli. I would rate the food four stars and would not hesitate to go back for the delicious dishes. My rating gets knocked down by service, however. Our waiter seemed a bit smug and was not attentive during most of the meal. We ordered four appetizers (calimari and caprese salad) for the table, but we were not given individual plates to use. Our server did not check back with us during the appetizers or meal to see how we were doing. We were also disappointed that they did not have a special dessert for the anniversary couple even though the hotel concierge had tipped them off at the time of the reservation. We also reminded the waitstaff of the 50th anniversary when we arrived. Oh well, the waiter still got his automatic 18% due to the size of our party. Not bad on a $450-500 bill or whatever it was.

I went to Pane e Vino last Friday with my wife and six other friends. We had a perfect table outside on the grove patio while a man was playing acoustic guitar. Atmosphere & ambiance was excellent, service was slow but they we're really busy. Salads were great starters and the pasta dishes are the way to go. Reasonably priced and great times - highly recommend.

Atmosphere was A+. My wife and i sat outside in their covered courtyard. Tin roof, cool paintings, light strings around the place candles everywhere...its romantic. Everything else was less than average. Like some of the other reviews that speak of the dishes being tasteless that's what we experienced. The calamari is overshadowed by a huge bed of lettuce and is drizzled with balsamic vinegerette. I asked if they had marinara and the waitress said, "this is how they do it in Italy". Once we tried our ice cold bread I asked if they had hot bread and she said no it's room temp. It is what it is. Also, it should be noted that once we ordered our entrees we literally got them 3-4 min later. There's no way you can cook that fast without the micro (this was just our speculation) Atmosphere -A+ waitress food knowledge -D (she was in the clouds) Food- C (our entrees were hot and had some taste)

This place was amazing! Great ambiance...live music...nice waitresses...delicious food.... You have to try the gnocchi! Getting a reservation was abnormal - you have to call, leave a message, and then they'll call you back - but all in all, i will definitely add this to my list of restaurants!

My husband and I go here for date nights. The place is very intimate and the food is wonderful. We usually get a bottle of the house red and love it. The cheese plates are great and with the exception of a dish or two (the fish or the Gnocchi with gorgonzola), I have never been disappointed. I highly recommend the Ravioli in the cream sauce with asparagus.

What a cool, little hidden gem of a place. You could drive by it 100 times and not even notice it was there. My kind of place! Service was impeccable, never been waited on like that before. We got to sit outside in the courtyard, which was very nice, and it wasn't too hot. The street noise was a little annoying, but after a while didn't really notice it. The portions weren't as big as I would have liked, which brought it down to 4 stars, but the price was decent enough that it didn't really bother me. It's pretty much in line with what you pay at Carraba's or somewhere like that, but it's all local seafood and it's a local business, so it's worth it. I think the most expensive thing was around $25, but the majority was between $10-$17. Food was pretty good and fresh. They have a huge wine list, but I'm not much a wine drinker, so it didn't really matter to me. Definitely a great place for an intimate dinner with your special lady or man, which ever you prefer.

It's a small Italian wine bar where they know what they're doing. The food was very tasty and the wine list is decent. The dining room is tiny--there are nine tables and five seats at the bar. Not to worry though, they have outside seating as well. Their pappardelle al' antica, had a lot of interesting flavors in it (definitely not Italian-American), I liked it.

My wife and parents ate here recently. The food is fantastic and reminded us of our trip to Italy, with the house wine similar to the table wine you frequently get there. All combined, our group got a mix of appetizers, soups, salads, and meals. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals. The bruschetta and gnocchi were two of the notable highlights. If the weather is nice, the outdoor seating is very romantic. The service was friendly and attentive. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for an authentic Italian meal.

Authentic Italian food Ina great romantic setting. Terrific date spot, we sat outside on just a terrific setting and the wait staff was slow but charming. Have a glass of prosecco and relax. It's worth the wait. Make sure this is on your dining list in Charleston, i can't wait to go back.

Enjoyed dinner here very much - found myself comparing it favorably to some of my favorite Italian restaurants in NYC, noting the authenticity. None of the waiters I encountered speak a lick of Italian - a bit of a disappointment/red flag for me, but the chef certainly did through his mussels. Would have appreciated the Insalata Caprese without vinegar, and a bit more attentive on the service - but I realized immediately it's a place for locals and they didn't know me. Oh....but they will. Looking forward to returning! Mangia!

I was so excited to visit Pane e Vino at last. All it takes is an evening stroll past this adorable little ristorante, with its cinnamon-colored courtyard and tiny white lights everywhere, to prompt a visit. Unfortunately, my experience last night fell short of my admittedly high expectations. The atmosphere was everything I could have desired. A cool evening, swoony lighting, soft music. And the service was nearly impeccable (though I never got the S & P I so desperately needed). But my entree, the spaghetti ai gamberi (tomato sauce with crab and shrimp) was flat and boring, nearly tasteless. I needed some salt just to remind myself that I had tastebuds at all. Not all of the entrees were so lifeless, though; my friend got the spinach ravioli special with prosciutto and scallops. It teemed with flavor, layer upon layer, almost too much. And the arugula salad with a round of goat cheese topped with fig molasses delighted us all. But the eggplant appetizer was bland and rubbery, a little amateur. The mussels they brought my poor bivalve-loving friend were, in her words, "the size of raisins." Sorry, there's just no excuse for that. I really want this restaurant to be better, and I'll definitely be back, because they got so much right. But the food was a classic case of hit and miss.

Open on Sundays. Small and intimate. House wine is good choice. Special happened to be fresh grouper which was delicious and appetizer was calamari which was also very good. The most lacking part of the meal was the bread. For an Italian restaurant, the bread was disappointing. It lacked taste and texture.

Great food and a great atmosphere. I've been a good amount of times, and depending on the crowd size and the time of week the service can be really good or really bad.

The food was good, though a little underspiced for my taste (for the pasta we tried.) Prices are not bad for Charleston, and they have a good wine list. "Small plates" of sundried tomatoes with capers in spicy olive oil, and hummus with radishes were great. The wait staff were very friendly, and the ambiance of the restaurant is very good.

Came here one night for a late dinner. The food was great, but the service was slow. The waiter acknowledge his slowness and gave us our drinks for free...I didn't even have to complain about it. For apps we had the charcuterie and the bruschetta, both were excellent. I only wish I had more people with me so I could add more to the meat plate. They have a great selection of wines. I can't remember what we ordered for entrees, but they were very good. Parking is on the street. We easily found parking on the intersecting street at a meter. Prices are very reasonable.

Pane e Vino is a great place to go for a 50 dollar dinner that feels like a 100 dollar dinner. Atmosphere is awesome (side street). Seemed to be a favorite hidden secret with the locals. I have been to alot of restaurants so would say it would be impossible to say it was the best meal I ever had, but it gets 5 stars from me without a doubt when combining price, atmosphere, quality of meal and service.

This restaurant is a hidden treasure downtown. The food is excellent and the ambiance is even better. If you have a large group, you'll have to eat outdoors but the patio is very sweet and intimate just like the restaurant. This restaurant has it all: great atmosphere, fabulous service, and even better food.

My best friend and I have a love affair with Pane e Vino. Sure we know the owner and she did help decorate before it opened, but even if we didn't it would still be our go-to place for dinner out. The caprese is always fresh, and a great way to start your meal, and Masi will always come around with a good wine selection. The prices are good and even if you're on a tight budget the apps pretty filling. My favorite thing to order is one of their soups of the day (aparagus and arugla has been the best yet!!) and the smoked duck app. The duck comes in a sort of italian style quesadilla, with crisp flat bread and melted fontina; absolutley to die for!!! I love that Pane E Vino is tucked away on a quiet street in a building that you would never guess houses great authentic Italian. This place is such a gem, and if you can find it I recommend if nothing else stopping in for a glass of wine.

Finito

Frankg

Fantastic dining experience. A beautiful romantic place tucked right off King street on Warren Street. Great food, great service, great ambience and definitely great live music. Made me fall in love with my other half once again. Highly recommend!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
