This place does not look like much on the outside but don't let that scare you away! The food is amazing for such a cheap price. Best fried seafood I've had in a long time.

I've been dying to check out this place for quite some time since hole-in-the-wall spots serving dangerously good food are my favorite. Nana's Seafood is exactly that- a Charleston Institution. The place is more of a take-out spot than order in- with only a few small tables for seating. I opted for the $5 blue crab claws which come doused in a heavenly butter-garlic sauce. The $2 Fried Whiting and $3.75 Fried Chicken Livers were also excellent in all their greasy glory. The most popular item on the menu- the $15 box of Garlic Crabs are a STEAL for how much you get- with the ability to feed three people easily. My only complaint was that I had to wait around 45 minutes for my order so if you do decide to go here, best to place your order ahead of time on the phone. I no doubt will be back soon as I am already craving an order of Garlic Crabs, and it's only 10 a.m.

Yes yes yes! Great great authentic soul food! Not much seating at all, so takeout is a great option. Get lots of napkins ready (preferably cloth) and use your hands to dig in! Specials change daily so follow them on Instagram to get up-to-date info! They try to use local ingredients when possible/available (a lot from Crosby's seafood, which utilize local fishing grounds and resources). Close pretty early (7-8PM) so be mindful of time.

This is simply the best. Best quality seafood for the best price. It's a small establishment and it takes a bit of time to get the food out. Highly recommend fried lobster tail and garlic crab legs. Your welcome!

OMG how can such a small spot serve great food!!! Food is cooked fresh when ordered so be prepared to wait well worth it though. I ordered fried shrimp scallops dinner which was served with salad and fries. I'm so glad I traveled downtown well worth it!!!! I will be back. No air conditioning but who cares

I'm in big trouble. I recently visited Nana's and I was in fried shrimp and chicken wing heaven. After eating all that fried goodness, I immediately went in to a food coma. LOL!! This is a really great little place to grab a bite to eat. If you need it on the go, please phone in your order. Everything is made to order, so it takes a little longer to get your food. Nana's is going to be my guilty pleasure spot. It's within walking distance of my apartment so I've got to be careful. The staff is friendly and don't forget to get some of the crumble.

I love this place! The food is great and it's always hot and quick. I always take family each time they're in town. They all look forward to it.

Yay I'm a fan. I've only had takeout haven't dined in but I have to say the garlic crabs (I had snow crab and blue crab) are the best I've ever had. I had a friend with me from out of the country and she enjoyed them just as much. Haven't been back but have been craving it since. Can't wait to have some more. I have told many people about this place.

I've been living in New York for the last year. But when I come to Charleston for visits I always try to eat lunch here. One of the things I look forward to as I prepare to move back is Nana's. I love the whiting. The portions are large and the breading is consistent every time. It's cooked pretty crispy and that's the way I like it. The special "Nana" sauce is great on the whiting. I also like the french fries. I usually don't enjoy seasoning on fries but these are good. I also use the Nana's sauce on the fries instead of ketchup. They don't always have them but they make an awesome cookie bar (they call them something like "goody bar" I think).

I had walked in the insane heat for 5 blocks to "Dave's" for their fried seafood. I got there before they were scheduled to close and it was closed anyway without even a note apologizing to their customers for choosing to close before their scheduled close time. I contemplated returning at 5pm when they were scheduled to re-open, but hell no! I have too much pride. I don't care about how amazing your food is supposed to be, because if you do not treat your customers with some semblance of respect; forget it! So I returned home and began looking for another location that sold soul food and seafood. I learned that Nana's fit the bill and it was only around the corner. Sure, the reviews were only okay and not as amazing as Dave's, but there was little said about the actual food. So I grabbed my bag and made my way over. When I arrived at the restaurant, it looked quite small, but I have learned that some of the best food comes out of the "hole in the wall" kinda places. I walked in and noticed approximately 6 tables with 2 chairs each. There was a small counter, a washroom, and a TV on the top right-hand corner playing the news. They also had 2 chairs against the wall where you could sit and wait for your order if you were getting it to go. They have the menu on wall on the right-hand side and several pamphlets with the menu on the counter where you make your order. The restaurant was full with patrons, but they were not eating, so I am not sure if they were just hanging out or waiting for their orders (more on this later). Probably the former. I looked at the menu and I was disappointed to see that they did not have rice, mac and cheese or collard greens. They had lots of seafood options, but the sides consisted of mainly fries and a salad. But I asked anyway about their sides. It turns out that they did have many other sides available, but they were not listed anywhere. I decided to order fried shrimps, scallops with a side of yellow rice and mac & cheese (they did not have collard greens. I love collard greens so that made me sad) for $11.50. The gentleman that took my order told me that it would take about 20 to 25 minutes to receive my order. I thanked him and went over to sit on one of the chairs against the wall. I really wanted to take a picture of the restaurant, but it is so tiny and it was so full that I was embarrassed. Sorry. Within 15 minutes I was called over to the counter and was given my order. I was little confused as to why I received my order before everyone else that was there before me. Hence why I am not sure if the patrons there were hanging out or waiting for their food. Nevertheless, they were very polite and I thanked the chef and left. When I got home I opened the food and was pleased with what I saw. I got half an order of rice and mac & cheese, and a good portion of shrimps and scallops. I did find the batter to be a little salty, but I removed the batter from the scallops because they were just so good on their own. Wow, they were so juicy and just the perfect size. All in all it was a great meal! I did add fried plantains to my meal (I love sweet plantains and you can get a massive side order for under $3 at Fuel located a couple of blocks south) and I do think that the plantains balanced out the saltiness of the batter. I am Canadian, so maybe I am just not used to the salt...? And that dipping sauce. So good! True, maybe after the drama with Dave's it made me a softy, but I do highly recommend Nana's. **If you want something else that is not on the menu, ask them! You will be surprised by all the other options they have. :)

Everything here is delicious! Best fried oysters I've had in town. And definitely make sure to get the cornbread.

Nana's is a nice little 'seafood-soul' spot near downtown Charleston. I heard quite a bit of buzz about them while visiting the area for Thanksgiving and of course I had to give them a try. This is a small restaurant embedded in a neighborhood which means they do mostly takeout.....but there are 4 or 5 tables and a television if you want to eat in. They offer fish, shrimp, garlic or fried crabs, oysters, scallops, wings, and daily specials that may include seafood lasagna, ribs, pigs feet, lima beans over rice, pork chops, meatloaf, turkey wings, shark steak, collard greens, fried cabbage, chicken prioleau, red rice, seafood salad, mac n cheese, seafood stuffing, potato salad, bread pudding, salad, fries, and cornbread. With all that exciting food, I walked away less than excited as my fried whiting, seafood salad, chicken prioleau, and bread pudding were not as spectacular as I was hoping. I would love to give them more stars on my next trip and hopefully the seafood lasagna and fried greens will do just that......
