Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

Candygram for Mondo... This was some of the best italian I've had. The ONLY reason I don't give it five stars is due to ambience...and I may just be a miserable prick for being that particular. It was dark, suggesting an intimate setting, but much too loud. The walls were fairly bare, not to mention the tile floor, no table coverings and wide open setting let the noise bounce around like blame on a poorly implemented gov't IT project. However...do NOT let this sway you from eating here next time you're in Charleston, SC. I had the house salad, salmon special over risotto topped with olives, finished with chocolate and hazelnut gelato...the wife had mozzarella caprese, some chicken gorgonzola pasta mess that was unbelectable and choc/hazel gelato, my folks had salads, artichoke hearts, eggplant parm and pasta aglio el oil-o, or whatever...I tried it all, except the eggplant. I just can't get myself to ingest something purple on the outside. The service was good...good enough, or maybe it sucked, but I wouldn't know it because the food made up for it. It's location is not the best, in a strip mall and tucked in a corner. There are very positive ratings so far, and I'm happy to add another.

This place is tucked back in a shopping center so it is not visible from the main road. We went on a Saturday night and walked right in and were seated immediately. I had the chicken pasta with pesto and it was pretty flavorless other than the obvious pesto. It was straight up pesto too, so not a creamy sauce or anything like that. My partner had another pasta dish and really liked it. The ambiance is dark and has a romantic feel but we took our 4yr old son and he did great. Our server was good, but for what you get the prices are a little high.

Excellent find on James Island tucked away in a plaza. The food was outstanding and the service was on point. Highly recommend the dinner choices along with a bottle of wine. Looking forward to experiencing their lunch menu!

I really love this little local's italian spot on James Island. Always busy but small enough that it's not usually deafeningly loud. Great, friendly staff. Simple decor but has a nice, homey feel to it and has nice subdued lighting. My latest visit I had the seared sirloin over sweet potato gnocchi with a gorgonzola cream sauce with roasted red pepper and asparagus. The steak was cooked perfectly, tender, and flavorful. The asparagus was sweet and perfectly cooked. The only fault was with the gnocchi, which I found rather leaden, lacking any sort of sweet potato flavor, and INCREDIBLY salty (and I LIKE salt). The dish would have been better without it. My date had the eggplant parmesan which was AMAZING. Perfectly fried and not greasy, with lots of cheese and a nicely sweet sauce that counterbalanced the slight inherent bitterness of the eggplant wonderfully. I'll be having this on my next visit! All in all a great experience. Highly recommend you try it if you haven't already. Just avoid the gnocchi. :)

Don't even think about a take out on the weekend.. Called and the answer was we are really busy and not accepting take out orders. One hour later stopped and wanted take out and waitress said she would check with kitchen... Wait time 45-60..go figure....guess those take out parking signs in front of place are just for show..good food...poor management....went to Papa Murphy's next door and got a super sized pizza for a lot less $$$ and in 10 minute. Wish they had meatballs....!

Mondo's continues to shine and is always consistent. The nightly specials are always creative and fantastic and you can't go wrong with the usual items on the menu. Eggplant Parm is delicious and the Shrimp Picatta over pasta is one of the best. Reasonable and good wine and salads are simple but fresh. Not the best decor, but keeps the prices down and always clean and nice service.

Ran into this place by accident about 5 years ago while looking for an ice cream shop. Marisa swore she smelled marinara sauce, so we ducked in to take a look. Excellent Italian Cuisine, I always end up getting the pasta dishes, Marisa likes the seafood, clams, or mussel dishes that are featured on the nightly specials. Last week, I tried one of their signature dishes, which by the way was excellent. I had the Chicken Gorgonzola, which is thinly sliced chicken breast sauteed with garlic, onions, walnuts over rigatoni in a creamy gorgonzola sauce with diced roma tomatoes. Marisa opted for the steam mussels with roasted garlic cream over spinach fettucine. The foccacia bread, dipped in olive oil is out of this world with a bottle of wine. It's not much to look at from the outside. Mondo's is located on the end of a shopping mall. But the inside is very warm, perfectly dimmed lights, and just enough tables. I would rank Mondo's as one of our favorite top 3 Italian cuisine restaurants in the Charleston area.

most awsome restaurant i've ever eaten, anyone with a complaint is crazy or miserable. keep on keeping on chris!

Absolutely Awesome. For my money this is the best Chicken Parm in town. The food is fresh tasting exactly what Italian food should taste like. While esthetically lacking they have some great food for a fair price.

After a number of excellent meals we were disappointed in both the food and the service yesterday.....our waiter was busy talking to a couple at another table, actually was holding our drinks while he was talking to them....the main course was lukewarm, the sauce had no taste....will think twice before going back......unpleasant to spend money and not enjoy a good meal.....

One, if not the best restaurants in James Island. Their foccacia bread (made in house daily) is so delicious I'd like to just eat that and have a bottle of red wine. Rustic Italian cuisine. Good pastas, salads, and foccacia sandwiches. I always get one of their nightly specials. You can sit outside, but the Sonic drive thru is your scenery. Inside atmosphere is dimly lite with the right amount of commotion and noise. Wines are very reasonably priced. As is the food!

Oh Mondo's...How I loved thee...Let me count the ways... 1) GLUTEN FREE friendly!! Oh, thank the heavens. 2) They will make it however you need/want it! We ordered the Roasted Garlic and Parmesan Cream Pasta changing ALMOST EVERYTHING about it besides the sauce partially due to dietary constrictions and my love of veggies. Haha. We subbed the fettuccine with risotto and added grilled chicken, onions, and peppers. What's lovely is that they were MORE than happy to accommodate! 3) It. tasted. AMAZING. 4) Affordable and shareable at that! PLENTY for 2 to split a meal, which my husband and I love to do. GF or not, you gotta go. Now. Like, right now. And take me with you.

Went there for lunch the other day and was pleasantly surprised! Good selection of menu items and drinks. Great food, had the eggplant parm sandwich was really yummy! Also, great portions for great prices! They give you a little bit of bread and oil, like many Italian restaurants do, and it was excellent! Great flavor on the bread and is probably baked in-house. The service was good and the interior/decor is spacious, airy and makes you feel welcome. I will eat here again, that's for sure. I'll also recommend it to many! Got a great tasting and big lunch sandwich and some bread with a glass of water, and it was $9.50 - great!

Picked this place on vacation because of the great reviews. We were a little worried they wouldn't have vegan options but our server Paul was excellent and picked up on the dietary restrictions in the group and made sure it all worked out. Very reasonable prices and excellent food - I'd recommend the spaghetti with asparagus!

I already know this is going to be delicious the minute I sat down to Olive oil and shredded parm. And ciabatta bread. You walk in and it's dimly lit and comfortable atmosphere but loud. I can handle the loud conversations since it just turns into into white noise. Don't be in a hurry since it may take some time for your food to get to you. I was expecting this to take awhile. I got the Pesto Penne with meatballs. it was delicious and flavor balance with pesto, garlic and parm. The pasta was well done al dente and not over cooked in the slightest. Meatballs had a nice flavor to it I can definitely tell it was homemade and fresh. This place is seriously hidden away behind Walgreens and next to Sonic on Folly Road. Take a visit and enjoy the fresh change of pace and atmosphere similar to but not in downtown this is definitely the place to go.

So happy to have found this gem on James Island! Yes, it is in a strip mall. Yes, your GPS will take you into a neighborhood behind said strip mall. Just forget all of that, and go for dinner. Tonight. Just coming back from a trip to Boston, I wasn't so sure about finding a good Italian place here in Charleston. A local Italian invited us out to eat here, and we are SO HAPPY he did. They have a wide range of different pasta dishes available with your choice of proteins to add. I had the Pan Seared Salmon with Pasta Penne (penne in a garlic cream sauce with proscuitto and asparagus) and was immediately in heaven. The salmon was cooked perfectly (medium) which is not easy to do. The pasta complimented the salmon wonderfully, with the proscuitto adding a bit of salt to the dish. Just perfect. Didn't have dessert, but I can comment on the wine lis- mostly Italian or Californian wines, but a very good selection. Whoever put together this list knows their wines! We can't wait to come back and try dinner on the patio sometime!

Always searching for a decent Italian restaurant seems to be my second career anymore. At least now I can stop searching in Charleston. Had to motor over to James Island to find this restaurant. My lovely, but spicy, Italian wife, who hails from South Philly is always complaining that nobody makes Italian sauces like her Momma did. I loved that woman - she would often spend an entire day preparing and cooking sauce for the evening pasta feast. Finding a good Italian restaurant that serves lunch in Charleston or anywhere in the South is like catching Mayor Riley on a bad day - it's just not gonna happen. Okay, enough of that. Now for the food at Mondo's Delite. I had the pomodoro pasta with sweet Italian sausage. Delightful!! I let Sophia try it. Big mistake. I had to wrestle my plate back from her. She said it was one of the best Italian dishes she had tasted south of where she grew up. The sausage looked more like a steak than the usual tiny slivers most Italian restaurants give you. The sauce was so good we asked them to give us some in a small cup to take home with our leftovers. Yes, leftovers. The prices here are very reasonable and the servings are more than one person should have in the middle of the day. Sophia had the meatball parmigiano on a hoagie roll. Loved it. Later that night she commandeered what was left from my lunch and vacuumed it up. We've gotta go back now. Why can't Mt. Pleasant have a place like this! Non e giusto!

Been here many times. Instead of my review, and wasting your time, just read all the rest. I agree 100%. One of the best Italian places around. Try it... You'll like it ! Frank G

Let's be honest... finding quality Italian food in Charleston is like finding a good movie that Drew Barrymore appears in. Yeah, it's very difficult. But Mondo's Delite is that rare unicorn! Yes, it's located in a strip mall but don't let that deter you. There is magic in this kitchen. The food is fresh and delicious. I have not had a bad meal here and don't foresee that ever happening. Dear Mondo's, don't ever change. Keep doing what you're doing.
(5)Sarah J.
I love this place and can't wait to go back! Awesome dishes with reasonable prices. The mussels in garlic cream sauce were outstanding and I will definitely look forward to ordering them again.
(5)Mandy Y.
Hands down best restaurant on James Island. The service is always fantastic and the food never disappoints. We've been to Mondo's numerous times and I haven't had one thing that I didn't like. The spinach salad and bruschetta are among our favorites and I especially love the Vodka sauce, Manicotti, and Pomodoro. Not to mention, they have the best Sangria and Canoli I've ever had. When there is a wait, they have a quaint patio with a bar and a great wine selection. A definite 'must go' for anyone in the Charleston area.

As much as I hate to say it, I feel like this place is going down hill. Over the past few years the quality of food and the flavors have gone from delicious to why did I put that in my mouth and spend so much money. Over the past year and a half we consistently end our meal with immediate regret of choosing this place. We continued to dine here with the hope that the food would be as good as it was when we first started dining here. It's just not the same which is unfortunate, as there are not too many good restaurants on James Island. At this point I do not think we will be back. This time...our last time...our waitress was nice and all. I asked her about the gluten free options she told me all the salads were gluten free and if they had gluten ingredients they could be removed. I ordered the Gorgonzola salad and it showed up with a crouton....ok...great now my salad has been cross contaminated....I wonder what else is in this restaurant... If you have celiacs I'd be concerned about eating here. My husband ordered the blackened chicken penne prosciutto. He commented that it was incredibly salty and didn't even want to take home the left overs!! That's bad if you know my man...he either finishes it or takes it home. As for me, I had the Parmesan risotto and added chicken. This dish had no flavor at all! I could not even taste the parmesan and the "grilled chicken" was dry and appear to be microwaved. The description sounded good, it just lacked that "umph this is so good" feeling when you take your first bite. The server never came to ask us about our salad or the meal after they arrived so we didn't have the opportunity to let her know it was not great and there was a crouton in the "gluten free" salad. I am not totally against this place as I really enjoy their wine selection and patio. Their food is just way to over priced and their severs need some training.

I LOVE this place. I have loved it since I was a mere teenager going for date night! They have great food and I have always had friendly servers. The wait is long occasionally but now that they have outdoor seating with a bar it is much better. Don't be afraid of the it being in a strip mall! You won't be disappointed!
(5)Amanda R.
My boyfriend and I went to Mondo's last night for dinner. We had been to Mondo's before...but last night was exceptionally good all around. Once we sat down, it wasn't but a few seconds later that our sever was at our table introducing herself. If I can remember correctly, her name was Aven. She was great. She gave us recommendations and was extremely personable. We got a salmon special and chicken gorgonzola pasta. YOU. MUST. TRY. BOTH. Trust me on this. They were both perfectly cooked. Throughout our meals, our server made sure we were never running low on drinks. She checked on us just enough for us to feel that we mattered...but not too much to the point of annoyance. We will definitely be back to Mondos! Great service and great food. Can't beat that!
(5)Drew E.
Best Italian place on JI!! We had the prosciutto-wrapped artichoke hearts as a starter and they were very solid! Great selection of pastas and big serving sizes!! It's a small restaurant and they don't take reservations for smaller parties so if you have 4 or less people you may have to wait for a table. There's a nice little bar and patio outside to wait though.

Great little spot with a very affordable menu. We were very pleased with our dinners. It is very apparent that the chef actually *prepares* your meal, not just slap it on a plate. The green salad was a work of art comprised of nothing but the freshest vegetables. I had the eggplant parm and it was delicious. However, I find it odd that it was already paired with a green salad. Our waitress was honest enough to let me know that when I had already indicated I wanted the soup, "the eggplant comes with a salad, do you still want the soup?" (I did get the soup and it was very good). Maybe it's an italian thing? I'm irish so it's lost on me. Seems odd to mandate an app with an entree. The eggplant also didn't come with anything except eggplant. I assumed there would be some sort of pasta but apparently not. Lastly, dining was wide open so it was kind of loud. Some booths along the wall may be a worthwhile consideration and would probably increase the seating capacity. We will be back to see what else they have to offer. The chef has our compliments!

YUM YUM YUM!!! Went here last night for my moms birthday and thank god we did. I live about 5 minutes away so that's a plus. We first ordered drinks- Mom got white wine and I got the White Peach Sangria Special. Absolutely delicious and thank god they put it in a decent size glass. One of my pet peeves with restaurants is that they charge you $8 or so for a little glass that will be gone in 3 swallows. Then we proceeded with appetizers. We got the portabella stuffed with crab meat which was fabulous. Had a good amount of meat and it laid in a bed of marina sauce!! We also got the fruit special bruschetta can't remember what exactly was on it but my mouth sure liked it. Mom got risotto for her entrée which was okay to me but she loved it! I on the other hand got the mushroom and spinach ravioli! OH MY GOD! No lie I could eat it every single day. The sauce that it bathed in was out of this world. I recommend this place to anyone who likes good service, atmosphere and FOOD!
(5)Margie W.
Excellent fresh food! Location is a bit bizarre...In a strip mall next to Sonic. Don't let this fool you. Also an outdoor patio that sits directly in the parking lot. Strange but it works. Eggplant parm is extraordinary, as was the bruschetta as an appetizer. Penne with asparagus and vodka sauce was tasty. Highly recommend this restaurant.
(5)Nicole K.
We decided on Italian and found Mondos. The bruschetta was out of this world. The Grecian salad was excellent. We had the bread with oil and herbs. We ordered meatballs, chicken parm and pomodoro with breaded chicken. Everything was so delicious. If you are in the mood for Italian come here. They are right in Foley Road behind walgreens.
(4)Rob K.
Best restaurant on James Island bar none. Mondos is a hidden gem and always serves up an excellent meal in a relaxed, quiet atmosphere. One of our favorites for sure.
(5)Ryan H.
Todd was our waiter and he handled us well. We brought our own wine and paid the corkage fee. Started with a good Malbec from Wine Awesomeness. The fresh bread before the meal was fantastic. Followed by my spaghetti with garlic and olive oil. Scrumptious. My lovely wife got the eggplant parm and we shared. They complimented each other wonderfully. We sat around and had the bottle of Prosecco that finished it off nicely. Been too long since I have been here and will not let it go that long again.
(4)Tom P.
I've had lunch and dinner here many times and always been happy with service and quality. The staff is good and the owner is the main chief and you can tell he cares. The have good outside seating too.
(4)Rhonada W.
A diamond in the rough... such a gem. Authentic Italian food at its best. Service is on point, always! Nicest people ever. The food is someting you crave. Flavorful and true Italian. My husband and I get so excited when we are able to dine here!
(5)Cindy F.
This is our new favorite upscale Italian place. Wow, everything is so good. Every time we go, we order the mushroom risotto. This is hands down the best risotto that I've ever had. We had pesto tonight and chose the whole wheat pasta. It was incredible. Great bread, olive oil, good wine selection, great service, perfect. Also had the mussel in garlic cream sauce for appetizer. It was awesome. We ate 2 servings of bread dipping in the incredible sauce. The prices are so much better here than the other Italian places we like to go. Definitely recommend it. We've gone back twice this week because we've been craving Italian!
(5)Alex K.
Waiter was awesome and very kind. The bread was absolutely delicious and served with some olive oil dip. I ordered the chicken parm and the chicken itself was great and the sauce was also very tasty. The problem I had with the dish was the pasta that was served with it. It was hard and overall not that great. But that's not what I got the dish for. So ultimately I really enjoyed the place.
(4)Liz G.
Very consistent and tasty. It is a little pricey for a lunch spot but not too bad.
(4)Kate Q.
I am shocked that this place doesn't have more reviews. Come on locals! Support your food! Mondos is delicious. Fresh, simple, clean. Genuine Italian in a casual, comfortable atmosphere. I usually overindulge, next time I've got to keep it simple! I would suggest offering two portions of pasta, though.
(5)Laura B.
This sweet spot came highly recommended as a Must Dine for our Charleston trip and WOW, so glad we fit it in. We arrived mins before lunch ended; they graciously sat us w/a :) realizing we went out of our way to get there on time. Moments after relaxing at our table, homemade focaccia bread w/o.o. Arrived... oh yum! :) We then shared two "sumer specials": Chicken caprese sandwich & Summer Salad w/wild grilled salmon Heaven in my mouth good :) Sandwich came on a delicious focaccia bread w/moz., basil, tomato & our side of choose was cucumber salad (also tasty) Summer salad: oh wow! Order this while it lasts! :) Bed of mixed greens w/heirloom tomatoes, sunflower seeds, strawberries, melon, feta in a lovely, delicious, light citrus vinegarett topped w/perfectly cooked grilled Wild Salmon Price: just under $30 for both dishes Including tip & completely worth it :) We didn't stay for dessert, however we heard they're divine too :) Highly recommend :)

Truly a James Island hidden treasure. My family used to own a place on Folly and we always made a trip to Mondo's. So sad to see how commercial the island has become, but glad local places like this have stayed around. Must try the Prosciutto Wrapped Artichoke Hearts and Chicken Gorgonzola. Also have a glass (or 2) of the seasonal sangria!
