I've eaten both lunch and dinner at Leaf, and both were nice. I could taste the truffle on the fries, and the menu was uncluttered yet diverse. The courtyard was lovely except when one is seated near the front-door side, the other side of the hedge is where smokers congregate outside the front of the restaurant. The only negative was no Allagash on the menu, but nice local alternative choices. The service was well-done and our server was knowledgable. Leaf differentiates itself nicely in the amazing and sense Charleston dining scene. I would return again.

I gave Leaf 3 stars but it could easily have been just 2. Went with three others on a Saturday night and not one of us really enjoyed our meals. Everything was just OK, which is a bummer when you're in a town like Charleston with sure great restaurants. Our friends started with the Frickles which they said were underdone. The flavor was good, but a strange texture for fried pickles. We started with the clams and mussels which again were just OK. I get mussels a lot when dining out and these were no where near as good as others I've had, very little flavor. Ordered the Shrimp Po Boy which was basically six shrimp on a VERY large hoagie roll. I pulled half of the bread off. The shrimp had a great taste, but there was nothing to the sandwich. Two in my group ordered the fish and chips and both said it was just fish, bummer. A draft beer was $8, which was the same as my cocktail so we thought that was strange. Our waitress seemed new and apprehensive to serve us which made things feel a bit awkward and we waited a long time between appetizers and the entrée. Leaf wasn't bad so thats why I gave 3 stars, but we won't return and won't be recommending. There are so many places in Charleston that can be 10 times better.

When I originally made reservations for Leaf I was hoping to enjoy dining on their patio. The rain stopped me from doing that. Our party of six dined inside, and although there was a private function going on, an art auction, it did not distract from our dining experience. The calamari we shared as an appetizer was more than enough for all of us to taste. My husband & I shared a Greek salad, which was split in the kitchen. If we each had only half, I honestly don't see how one person could eat an entire salad alone. We all ordered different entrees and everyone was pleased with their meal. My highest compliment goes to our waiter, Chris E. He was attendant to our every need, checked on our table often, even though he had other diners to tend to. It was almost as though we were his only table. He had a wonderful personality and made each of us feel like he was truly happy to be at work and that he loved his job. Compliments to the chef, but twice as many to Chris. I'm sure the rest of the wait staff is equally pleasant, but three cheers for Chris E!

Came here for the Sunday brunch! The menu had a variety of options as well as a choice of either a mimosa or bloody mary with the meal. The outdoor seating and music was perfect for early March weather on "Second Sunday". I tried the crab cake eggs benedict and enjoyed it. It was good but not anything extraordinary. Typical crab cake, substituting ham, on your traditional eggs benedict. Accompanying this was some roasted breakfast potatoes which were great! Overall, I enjoyed the experience more so than the food. A great place to be taken for catch-ups and rendezvous.

Went on a Friday night to bar hop and try house drinks and an app. We walked in to an empty host stand, it wasn't set up well, so much so that we thought we walked in the wrong door. We decided to seat ourselves at the bar. The bartender saw us and ignored us for over 5 mins before he came over. He was not in a good mood and made that obvious, we almost thought we'd done something wrong. But we literally just sat down, how could we have been rude already? The other waiters were kinda meandering around, strange for there to be no urgency on a Friday night. We had the shepherd's pie. It was good! But we quickly finished that and one beer and left. Bartender said bye and possibly thanks, which was the most he said to us the whole time we were there. Left us with a really bad taste in our mouth. We won't be back. (2 stars simply for the yummy app, could have been 1 stars easily)

Incredible EVERYTHING!!!!!! Key Lime Pie with Roasted Pecans in the crust, roasted Romaine in our Ceasar Salad w/toasted Parmesan and tiny bits of delicious other secret seasonings!! The Lemon Chicken soup was so delightful with tons of chicken, spinach, tomato and Feta! My husband had the Beef Vegetable Stew and gives it 4.5 stars! The coffee was delicious but best of all was the Service by Eric and Chris, who treated us like Royalty. This place is a must for lunch on the Patio!!

Average written all over it. Very strange setup, sub-par food, and not too friendly of a staff. Will not be returning.

It has Leaf in the name... I couldn't really pass that one up for my own reasons. Name aside, the food and staff were average. We started with the meat & cheese plate which was nice. They even present a few of their appetizers on a wooden slab, this included the cheese plate. I'm really not into meat & cheese that much, but the atmosphere of the patio and how elegant it was waned to buying a fancy wooden cheese plate which was really nice. They also suggest some plates are better for sharing, so thumbs up to that. My problem with Leaf though is it's so refined it's missing "umf" so to speak. I remember the cheese board well, and it was great, but our entrees, a portobello burger, truffle fries, and there was another entree I can't even recall, but were all so-so and uninspired. I did, however, enjoy the truffle fries, sadly, they weren't anything special. What was nice about Leaf was the patio and space. We chose outside seating which is centered by a beautiful tree and enclosed by surrounding foliage, semi-garden esque. The bar area looked well lit and breezy too. Like others have noted, the wait staff was transparent and inattentive. I only say this as our waitress was MIA a decent amount and seated us to a table without silverware or napkins or... really anything, and even after we finally got someone's attention it wasn't til sometime after our entrees arrived that we received any silverware. It really wouldn't have been a problem if there actually hadn't been things we needed. I'd also ignore it if they were busy, it's lunch, things happen, but there were about five tables seated with lots open. In the end, I'd probably only recommend Leaf for the restaurant's ambience.

Great dinner here. I had the grilled salmon over grits and everything was cooked to perfection and the service was top notch. We sat in the back dining area and the atmosphere was sophisticated yet fun. The bar area is expansive and plenty of room to find "your" spot. Good mix of locals and tourists. Tried the mixed cocktails and they were strong but balanced.

Service is a bit aloof, but the food is pretty good. Wine list is as little limited, bit over priced. Atmosphere is nice, great patio. Casual, southern favs with a twist.

I think Leaf has the best patio in Charleston. I could sit there in the comfortable chairs all evening! The menu is interesting and the food is very good. They have a full range of premium cocktails--pretty much everything a person would need. Tonight I wasn't that impressed with the friendliness of my server, but that is just one evening's experience. I recommend Leaf as a very good restaurant.

  • M. C.

While the ambiance is lovely, the food was really abysmal. Sprouts with bacon inexplicably doused in beef gravy, a charcuterie board of flavorless meats, over salted brick chicken, overly-sweet collards, shell in the crab cakes, risotto with so much pepper it was too spicy to eat, and a pretty boring wine list. Possibly worth visiting for a drink, but when six girls trying to keep as positive as possible to give the bride a great bachelorette weekend can't keep their bad dishes to themselves, I wouldn't revisit the food.

Went here for Sunday brunch, and had a great experience. They have a nice outdoor area. We had a hard time choosing what to order because everything on the menu sounded so good, and to our expectations, all of the food we ordered was delicious! The staff was friendly and helpful. I am looking forward to going back and trying more.

Fabulous meal at Leaf. Ask for Katie! Great meal and great service! I can not say enough good things about Leaf. Ask for Cole the bartender.

Leaf for Mother's Day Brunch; and it was great. Have stopped here many times with friends for dinner because it's off the beaten path, and offers the private outside dining which is a huge draw. They offered their regular Sunday Brunch menu and coupled with a few Mimosa's and some really good coffee, we were all happy. The big surprise order was the fritata, which I never would have looked twice at, but my Mother saw something appealing in the menu description and our waitress recommended it, so she took a chance and it turned out to be fantastic, so much so that we all agreed that next time, we'd likely all order it!

Love the Sunday brunch! Veggie omelette is quite tasty! They were also very accommodating to my lactose intolerant friend!

Not a good experience. We ordered the "Frickles" and calamari appetizers, and we should have trusted our instincts about them and just asked for the check. They were drenched in oil, and both came with the same sauce that was runny, bland and too salty. My wife got the "Shell Bowl", which oddly did not come with bread. I ordered the "Southern Cobb Salad", and it was like something you'd get pre-made at a grocery store: generic mixed greens, mechanically-shredded cheddar from a bag, flavorless tomato, boring bacon, overripe avocado and a hard-boiled egg cut in half. My wife's fish and chips was unappetizing, dry, and flavorless. It came pre-drizzled with balsamic vinegar, and also had the same sauce that accompanied the appetizers. She sent it back, and the manager offered to make her something else. Based on the low quality of what we had been served thus far, it seemed pointless to try yet another dish. It doesn't reflect well on the restaurant's management that the fish and chips was still on the bill when it came time to pay. I wish we had paid more attention to the 3-star rating on Yelp and our early impressions based on the appetizers. With all the amazing food we've had on this trip, having our last dinner at Leaf was a real disappointment.

Went for lunch and ordered the Greek salad and added chicken. The salad was fine--nothing special--but was very expensive for how small it was (about $15). Someone else in our group ordered the Caesar, which apparently comes as a whole head of romaine with a little bit of dressing... Although to be fair, the menu pretty clearly states this. Basically the salads are meh... But it's a cool space with a big patio! The sandwich choices looked more appetizing and will probably go with that next time. Apparently the fries are pretty good but I didn't taste them myself. I will say, our waitress went out of her way to be accommodating to some requests from my party--5 stars to the staff!!

Ok, this review is just for the space/ bar. I only ordered a Sierra Nevada pale ale. The TVs were large and good to watch the Masters on. I loved the openness of the place, especially since the weather was gorgeous. Downside: the barstool felt like it was going to collapse. The chair was missing one of the wood pieces, and the chair had lost its padding. They could definitely use an upgrade. I finally found a wooden chair with a woven seat that was much sturdier and safer. I'd go back for a beer again.

We were hot and tired and wanted something good for lunch. We asked a local and they recommend Leaf. Glad they did! The location is beautiful with an outstanding outdoor dining area. I had a wonderful hamburger that was double stacked, and my wife had the Cuban sandwich. Equally as good. The waiter was very attentive and made the experience even better. You gotta check this place out!

Two stars for today. Sometimes it's better. Love that they have parking. Love the decor. Love the patio. The service is so uneven. Sometimes wonderful. Sometimes horrible. Same can be said for the kitchen. Sometimes good, sometimes not so much. Had brunch today and the waiter was terrible. What a bad attitude and bad at his job. We waited for 20 minutes without water, silverware or napkins, or getting our order taken. I saw the manager there, but he never came over. Fairly empty restaurant and the manager can't walk by and ask how is everything? Seriously, I have visited your restaurant over a dozen times when in Charleston. Say hello.

Great hidden gem downtown. Love the decor of the restaurant. Food is pretty good but a little over priced. Drinks are over priced but the atmosphere makes it somewhat worth it. Staff is great and friendly. Certainly recommend if you want to be downtown but off the grid a little bit. The courtyard is a great place to sit on a nice cool afternoon.

We were in town visiting and found this place from the concierge. We wanted to sit somewhere outside and actually went twice. Once for brunch and once for dinner. Both meals were really good, and I had some of the best calamari I've ever had here. The outdoor space is beautiful and welcoming.

I have had drinks at the bar a couple times but recently found myself there for something to eat. I was involved in an event taking place in the parking lot so I grabbed my food to go and ate outside. Timmy took my order at the bar and even brought it out to me when it was ready. A friend and I ordered a couple meals to share so we could get more of their lunch menu. We had the Fried Chicken Sandwich (add bacon) with Parmesan Truffle Fries and the Short Rib Grilled Cheese sandwich with a side of Frickles. Everything was great! The chicken was a hearty size breast of juicy fried chicken smothered in a creole aioli and you cant go wrong by adding truffle oil to fries. The Frickles were lightly battered with cornmeal instead of your typical heavy batter allowing you to taste the pickles a bit more. What stuck out the most as unique was the flavor in the Short Rib Grilled Cheese housing 2 different types of cheese and the most tender short ribs. I didn't see the dinner menu but the lunch prices were very reasonable. Leaf will definitely be on my lunch radar from now on.

Bottom line: Follow the advice of many other reviewers -- sit at the bar, order a drink, maybe an appetizer, then make like a tree and... They did have a good wine selection. That's all I have to say about that.

I used to love LEAF, and have eaten there regularly since it opened, but honestly, the quality of the food and the service has consistently gone down in recent months. I was there the 'night of the rat' posted about below. Only we did not see one rat but two. It was my last straw. The owner's assurances that they had 'killed 6 rats' in recent weeks and it 'just happens' was not really all that helpful either.

I went to this restaurant today for a late lunch with my best friend not realizing it had replaced Vickery's awhile ago. We had a lovely time sitting at one of the tables inside overlooking the patio. The bartender was very friendly and attentive. I ordered the leaf burger and ordered their frickles on the side. I found quite tasty while really enjoyed the "fall" Charleston weather. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a quiet little restaurant tucked away in the heart of the Peninsula!

Over rated in my book. It is a lot like a $$ Applebee's. The service is bad at times, with as few customers as they have at times you think it would be better. The manager/owner/host type who seats you gives poor body language and comes off as someone who you think would rather you go somewhere else. The last time we were there he spent 10 minutes shaking down an elderly couple over them not having their restaurant.com gift certificate printed out. Needless to say he charged them full fare for the Ruby Tuesday's meals he served them for about 50$. I would avoid this place.

We went to Leaf for New Years Eve and had the worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant. When I called to make the reservation, I made sure to ask if they would be serving off their regular menu as well as offering the pre fix menu which was $45 per person. I was told that they would be offering their regular menu which is why we made the reservation. When we arrived, we were greeted by a host (or maybe the manager) who was trying to smooth things over which a customer who was leaving who appeared to be dissatisfied with their meal. I told him our reservation and he said "just one minute" and then stepped outside and literally never came back. We stood at the host stand and eventually, another host/manger came by to seat us we were only given their $45pp menu. When I asked the server if they would be serving from their regular menu as well, she gave me such an attitude and was incredibly rude. We told her we needed more time to look at the menu and then I went up to the front and asked the host about it and he told me whoever i spoke to on the phone made an "errouneous" claim and that they in fact were only serving from the pre fix menu. His explanation was that the kitchen was only prepared for this special menu. Our original server ended up not coming back to our table because I'm assuming she gave our table away to another server (which was fine with me because the next server was much nicer). When the new server came to take our order, we were immediately told that they were out of the filet mignon and it was being substituted with a rib eye. Which in my opinion, is not even comparable. We proceeded to order and I ordered the risotto as one of my appetizer only to be told a few minutes later when the server came back that they had also run out of that. If the kitchen was only prepared for this "special" menu, then how were they out of everything? When my scallop entree arrived, I was shocked. I was served 1.5 scallops with small sides. I would hardly consider 1.5 scallops an entree. All in all, this was a terrible dining experience with the exception of our server who did her best to be accommodating and it was obvious she was embarrassed by the fact she continuously had to tell us they were out of food. We will never return to this restaurant.

Took kids with second family. Modern decor and presentation. Friendly staff. Wife and I had steak frites. Asked for medium rare, but came charred on outside. Fries were insanely salty! Frickles were fine. Can't say it was the best food.

Wow. Totally impressed. Made reservations for brunch and was pleasantly surprised. When you first walk in, there is a center bar area and then high tables lined around the walls. eek. This doesn't feel very cozy. The hostess walked us through that area and to the back....where the dinning room was. ahhhh..ok...this I like. Very pleasant atmosphere. We ordered and sat and enjoyed our complimentary mimosa while listening to our two person jazz band. So cool. People were chatting quietly and respectfully. It was like a yoga experience. Very relaxing. I loved the decor and the big floor the ceiling windows. Food was great and nice portion sizes. Service was prompt and friendly. Mimosa's and bloody mary's were only $3 after your first one. I would love to come back and sit outside. The outside patio looks amazing.

Just received the worst service ever here. Unfortunate because my food was great. But If I'm paying $25 for a meal, service definitely trumps food and I will NEVER be back. The waitress was spaced and after waiting 45 minutes, she never apologized or even came by the table. If I have to watch other tables that ordered after me get their food, the least I could get was a refill on my water. My friend payed $15 for a Greek salad that looked more like a side salad. So imagine our surprise to see the Greek salad that came to the table next to us ---it was a completely different salad. Then after paying, we decided to inform the manager of the horrible service we received, and a different waitress interrupted to say, "she thought it was grilled veggies instead of Greek veggies". Like really lady? That just proved how horrible this staff was..she was so clueless on rules of the service industry that she decided it was important to interrupt while we were speaking to her manager. We didn't ask to be comp'd and we didn't even give her a hard time. We merely wanted to let him know so he could address the situation. And to top it ALL off, the waitress came by and spat to our table "you should never come back". Oh the audacity. I'm too shocked for words. We even informed the manager of her nice little regards as we left, and he himself didn't even offer an apology. We were given a business card and told that he could take care of our next visit, but only if its a small party. Well thanks Pierre, but no thanks.

We sat outside for brunch on a nice breezy Sunday. The biggest problem I had with this place was they enclosed their patio with tall bushes and they totally cut off the breeze. It had to have been 15 degrees hotter on their patio than it was outside. It made the meal miserable.

Went twice in two days. A quiet, refined, comfortable, casual hidden gem off Kings Street bustling shopping. A garden patio with brick rooms on two sides, manicured hedges on the other two, with a glorious shade tree overtipping it all. Competent service and a staff that really wants you to LOVE your experience. The food was very good -- one day I had the chicken pita with the side of beets ( a contender for best beets ever). Great. The next day I had the salmon BLT, and it was good, not quite as good. My mistake, maybe; I was expecting a salmon filet, and I got something more lox-y. Still good, just not what I had expected. The wife had two great meals as well, and our grown daughters loved their grilled caesar salad (nice char) and their burger (double patties -- good for two meals). Get off Kings Street and head to Leaf for a great lunch.

Out of towers, got the recommendation from our front desk. We ended up here for an early Saturday lunch. Since it was early there were no problems with waits. We were seated at a great table straddling the indoor and outdoor seating areas. Food was very good!

I was slightly disappointed in Leaf. I had read fab reviews online and heard great things from friends, but wasn't too excited about my stop in. We made a reservation online and were promptly seated upon our arrival. The waitress was quickly took our drink orders and then took awhile to come back for our food order. While ordering, our waitress seemed very inconvenienced. She was not peppy, did not like to talk and was very short with her answers. I was upset as the restaurant did not have any mozzarella in the shop. How do you offer things on your menu with a pretty common cheese and not have any in the store? Our appetizer came out- delicious. We ordered the frickles. I absolutely love fried pickles and these have made the top of the list. They were fantastic. Probably the only thing I enjoyed about my visit to Leaf. I reveiewed their website and menu to decide what I'd like to order. When we were looking over the menu at the restaurant, it was different. I odered the short rib grilled cheese, still sounded delicious even though it was different from the online menu. I received my plate but was very confused. The fries were there, great flavor and there was plenty. My sandwich was a sad excuse for a grilled cheese. After seeing pictures online, I was very excited for it. There was one small slice of meat and barely any cheese. It was all bread. The guests at my table said their food was okay, but not great. When clearing out plates, the waitress did not ask if anyone wanted theirs wrapped up. One of my guests did and she seemed, again, inconvenienced, that we were asking for something. I usually like to give places a second chance, but I'm not sure Leaf will get that opportunity.

Came here for dinner and again for drinks while I was visiting last weekend. The patio makes for a lovely spot to meet up, and somehow it didn't feel ungodly hot out there even though the temp was in the 90s. I shared some small plates and salads with a few friends and enjoyed it all, and the Brie with berries and egg over asparagus were particularly delicious. Drinks were fine. Still, it feels like it was lacking just a little something from the overall experience. Completely enjoyable and reasonable prices.

Went there tonight for drinks at the bar. They were not busy at all, yet with two bartenders (who were busy chatting up a few people who I am gathering were "regulars" and putting away glasses), it took a ridiculously long time to get served as we were seated and an even longer time for them to collect our check to run our card. Ridiculous. Don't think I will ever go back. Charleston has set a high bar for service and this place does not cut it.

Had a great experience at Leaf! We had a larger group the weekend of the Cooper River Bridge run and were having a hard time finding reservations. Leaf was more than happy to make a time for us. The was very impressed with the friendliness of the staff and their flexibility with our group. Our food was also excellent. I had the crab cakes which were huge and filled with big chunks of crab. The rest of our group also had great comments about their food. I would love to go back when it's warmer so I can take advantage of their super cute patio. This location is great if you're looking for a downtown dining spot but don't want to be RIGHT in the middle of everything. I would love to go back and try out their brunch. Thanks to Leaf for a great dining experience!

I don't even know where to start! First off, we chose the place due to the menu they were offering for Charleston Restaurant Week. We made reservations for 8:30pm for 4 adults (this was on a Friday). The place was easy to find and convenient since we were doing a little shopping beforehand. So we walk in about 15 minutes before our reservation and there is no host/hostess in sight. We waited a good 5 minutes before one of the bartenders acknowledged us and said someone would be right with us. Finally, a flustered and sweaty guy came up to the stand and asked us if we've been helped. I said no and that we had a reservation at 8:30. He said we were early and that he'd seat us shortly (mind you it's already 8:20). So we sit at one of the tables near the bar and I order a few beers while we waited. So it's 8:45 and we haven't been seated yet. Another guy comes up to our table (possibly the owner) and we ask of we could just sit and eat where we were at. He said of course and that it wouldn't be a problem. So a server came and proceeded to take care of us. I forgot his name and although he never smiled, he was actually pretty nice! The one thing that was pretty upsetting was that they sold out of the dessert we wanted and the dessert was actually a big reason why we picked this place. But on to the rest of our dinner. We ordered mussels and calamari to start with and I must say that their calamari was horrible!!! It was so rubbery, but we were so hungry and tired to even complain. The mussels were actually pretty good. The restaurant week appetizers were good as well. We had the braised pork belly and scallop and vegetable risotto. For our main courses, I got the chicken marsala and the rest of my family got the steak frites and scottish salmon. My chicken was a bit dry and once I was half way through, I noticed that one side was completely burnt! At this point, I wasn't surprised. I simply just didn't eat the side that was burnt. The rest of the meals were pretty good. The best part of the entrees were actually the truffle fries! You can't go wrong with truffle fries :)! Lastly, we had our desserts. The chocolate lava cake was more like chocolate lava rock. It was dry and pretty hard, nothing lava about that. I actually enjoyed the brie cheese with honey, which was accompanied with bread and strawberries. Our total bill was $158, not including tip, and with the service we received and the quality of the food, I'd say it just wasn't worth it. We kind of wished we looked on here for reviews and picked another place. We're definitely not coming back and I hope management will actually read their reviews and make some changes to better their business.

A friend and I were in town visiting and had heard great things about this place. We stopped in around 1 pm and were seated right away. Our waitress was friendly, attentive and even gave us a list of other great places to check out in Charleston. My friend ordered the Portabello Mushroom sandwich and I ordered the Chicken Pita. We also ordered the Frickles. Outstanding on all accounts. We had such a great experience here, we came back for lunch the next day. This time we added the Trio of Dips to our meals. The lobster dip was DELICIOUS! This place gets a two thumbs up from me for lunch. Can't speak about dinner because we didn't try it, but the patio is great to sit on after walking and walking and walking. Very pleasant, relaxing and great lunch fare.

Great atmosphere and lovely outdoor seating area. We went for lunch and them again for cocktails before dinner! Service was attentive and friendly, meatloaf was excellent and my wife loved the grilled ceasar salad with shrimp. We will definitely return and would recommend to anyone!!

My family and I had the opportunity to eat here while on a culinary tour. By far the best restaurant we went to out of our four stops! Our three samples included Caesar salad, a prosciutto grilled sandwich with truffle fries, and pot roast with short ribs. All I cam say is WOW! Never thought to grill my lettuce for the salad but this is very yummy! The fries were the bomb and the pot roast is excellent. By far my favorite restaurant in Charleston (have tried several that are known to be great). My kids enjoyed the food too and would like to go back! Service experience was good but being on the tour may have made it different then an actual full dining experience. Decor was nice and very calming!

We were recommended this great cafe by friends whom are locals. The space is large and full of light. Plenty of room and 2 large TVs to watch the game. The Caesar Salad is the best that I have ever had. The grilled lettuce and marinated chicken make this dish a must. The burger is very tall and delicious, however very messy. The Parmesan Truffle fries were good in small doses. They very salty and I appreciate lots of salt. The trio dip is a great way to start off the experience. Pimento cheese dip and Boursin were the best of the three. All in all, a great laid back experience with the best Caesar Salad that Leaves you wanting a return trip tomorrow.

Love this place! Had lunch with a bunch of local photographers and everyone was very happy with their food. The service was friendly and efficient. Really good. I had a creamy onion soup and really fresh beet salad. The burgers looked awesome. Will try next time. Definitely will go back. Definitely will try outside dining when the weather breaks.

Mom & I went for a nice and not too expensive dinner. My boss had gone for lunch the day before, but I hadn't really heard anything about the space. For starters, if you were ever a patron of Vickery's (that was there before Leaf), the change is incredible. It went from dark and dreary (with the ever present "bar" smell) to light, airy and very pleasant. We were greeted by a gentleman who took us directly outside (he didn't ask, and I would rather have sat inside, but I found out Mom wanted outside anyway-and it was a beautiful night out). Our server was Johnny on the spot and was attentive but not a hoverer. We had the beet salad & mussels to start. The mussels were good-a nice size appetizer portion with three little bread slices. The beet salad was GREAT-red and golden beets with arugula and blue cheese. Mom's not a fan of golden beets, but I've always loved the taste-makes one feel so close to the earth! Mom was thinking about getting the catch (Mahi Mahi) but changed her mind after hearing the price ($19). It wasn't badly priced, she was just trying to budget a little! I had ordered the marinated chicken pita, and she opted for the same. We both got parmesan truffle fries (really-who can resist those), and they were great! The chicken was marinated in Mediterranean flavors (think cardamom), and served one a warm pita along cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce and sauce. Despite being full about halfway through, I finished almost every bite...just couldn't stop! I'm thrilled to see this space become something nice, and I'm pleased with my first dining experience. I saw two fellow "foodies" on my way out, and they seemed to be enjoying everything, too! I can't wait to go back for lunch.

Literally just joined yelp solely to review this place. Absolutely wonderful! Took a day drop to Charleston with some friends on Monday and ended up having lunch here. The food was incredible...the pita's are gluten free!! I had the smoked salmon sandwich on a pita. Sister had the portobello burger and friend had the marinated chicken wrap..both on pitas and both delicious! Parmesan and sweet potatoes are amazing too. Our server, Leslie, was soo kind and helpful. Overly helpful (in a good way) with gluten free and vegan advice and just sweet in general! If I find myself in Charleston again I know where I'm eating!

Me and some of my lady friends were vacationing on Edisto Island and decided to drive to Charleston for lunch and shopping. My friend's mother suggested Leaf Cafe. I had never heard of it, being a frequent to Charleston, and was excited to try! When I walked in I was taken back at how breath takingly beautiful the restaurant was with the large ceilings, sophisticated horse shoe bar, large oil painting across the room, and the drapery in the main dining room that separated the different sections. We started with the Frickles which were delicious! Wish it came with more dipping sauce on the side but it was overall delicious. For lunch, I ordered the mixed green salad with shrimp which was a proportionate size and good, 2 others ordered the crab cake sandwich with parmesan truffle fries and were pleased, and my other friend ordered the beet salad. This beet salad had soooooo many beets. You must love beets to get this salad. For the kitchen's sake, i think it's too many beets that will go to waste and you may be able to save cost in the future by cutting back but it was a beautiful presentation. I will definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone that is visiting Charleston because for the ambience, prices, and the visual aesthetic appeal of the restaurant it's a great place to go!

Another place I just don't 'GET' I'm a foodie. I love food. I love going to eat. I love talking about food. I love other people enjoying their food. I love to cook. I mean, food is it for me. We were given a GC for Leaf which is the only reason we tried it. A ton of friends and clients had gone and given it poor reviews so we just figured we would stay away. When we went to Leaf, we were again the only table in the restaurant. The chairs are falling apart, the pleather is ripping and peeling away and they've been open for like five minutes. WTF. We ordered the dip appetizer which was decent but nothing special. I had the Greek Pita which was.....your basic Greek Pita except it was executed so poorly that you could NOT pick it up and eat it. By the time this got figured out, I was covered in tomato, half of it was on the table and half of it was on the dish and nothing was in the pita. Sent it back. Flavor was fine, but required too much effort. The fries were good. My partners bocadillo was fabulous. He also liked the fries. The problem for me is that the food is just...mediocre. The service was horrible, the atmosphere is half decent, half run down. For all the money they spent getting the space ready, it's still terribly unfinished. And lord love a duck, that menu makes no damn sense. There is no flow to the menu at all. There are too many places to eat, quite honestly.

We arrived after the kitchen closed, and had a meat and cheese plate at the bar. It was simple but really good. The bartenders were super friendly. The crowd seemed nice and well-behaved. It was a great way to be introduced to Charleston on our first night in town.

Leaf was nothing to get excited about. Their menu seemed fairly boring. I ended up starting with the pita appetizer. It came with 3 different types of dips. I picked a roasted red pepper hummus, a feta dip, and a pimento cheese dip. The feta dip was quite nice and was the highlight of the meal. Then for dinner I ordered a couple of more apps. I got a large beat and goat cheese salad that was pretty bland and a meat, cheese and fruit tray which was also dull. The meat on the try was prosciutto which I love but this was pretty flavorless. My wife ended up getting a sandwich (potabella) which looked pretty decent. The service was okay. They were pretty busy and I'm fairly forgiving but I could see someone else being annoyed about not having waters refilled, etc. Also the atmosphere was pretty terrible. This could have been my fault for sitting in the bar during a playoff game but there were a fair amount of drunk guys yelling at the TV in the bar. It was weird because it's obviously not a sports bar but here were a small number of guys just yelling. And they all looked like giant d-bags to top it off. Think 30 year old frat boy, recently divorced.

We went for sunday brunch and it seems like they had a major issue - maybe 10 people didn't show up for work? We had a 1:00 reservation...sat down just before 2:00...food came out at 3:00. Food was mediocre, obviously not worth the 3 hours wasted on a beautiful 70 degree day in February. Customer service was ridiculous, they did try to make it up in a few rounds of drinks but still ridiculous!

Wasn't sure what to expect. Didn't think to call to make a reservation - However it didn't look too busy. The "hostess" tells us that since we don't have a reservation we will have to sit in the bar - which is a horrible space especially to eat. There are people standing everywhere - butts right in the faces of people trying to eat. After telling the 'hostess' we're not willing to eat in the bar she checked with the manager to see if there were any tables available in the dining room. Apparently they were TOTALLY booked with reservations but they happened to have ONE table available. We get back to the very empty dining room and it feels like a midscale cafeteria. I don't know how else to describe it - just uncomfortable. The floors are light wood, yet the doors to the patio are stained dark and there are french doors along one wall painted white (disjointed) There are enough lights on to do brain surgery right on your table - the chairs look like they came from the 1980's used furniture store (the faux leather is peeling and falling off) We ordered the Fried "Frickles" and the Mussels as appetizers. The fried pickles were "OKAY" the breading is weird - and the dipping sauce doesn't accent the pickles well. The Mussels were odorous - and awful. They were not edible at all and the chef responded with "we just got them today - and they're a stronger than normal mussel" They may have just gotten them but they had been sitting on a dock somewhere all day (the effects of the two mussels that were eaten are still being felt today) Main course - The Yellowfin Tuna Special - a huge "non sparkly" looking slab of fish layed over about 2 cups of Quinoa, and "the vegetable of the day" It was not appetizing to look at. I had the Meatloaf - due mainly to the fact that nothing else on the menu caught my attention. The Tuna was way over spiced, and Meh. The Meatloaf was flavorless...I guess they used all their spices on that piece of fish. Our waitress was very nice. It's one of those placed where you feel bad for the waiters...I look forward to the next restaurant that takes this space.

Went here for Easter brunch with my cousin and her boyfriend. Sat in the courtyard and had the most enjoyable brunch: mimosas, bloody Mary's, thier take on eggs bene with filet on brioche and the best ever potato wedges ever. The addition of the bowl of fruit made it all the better. Cleansing after the savory brunch. Service was good and the atmosphere was welcoming with live music. Definite recommend.

Arrived early for a 7:45 pm reservation and went to the bar to have a drink. At 7;45 pm we were told they were running about 10 minutes behind and we'd be seated shortly. At 8;15 pm still no table and the gentleman who was the host seemed to be disappearing so he wouldn't have face customers who had been waiting. Now it's 8;30 and the host hasn't been up front for 10 - 15 minutes so we look for him and can't find him. We complain to someone else and they tell us they will have our table ready shortly, so we packed up and left. We've eaten there before and it was very good but this time they just didn't seem to have their act together for restaurant week. So for this visit to leaf they would get 1 1/2 stars.

Working as a concierge in the area, I stopped by Leaf for a quick lunch and to check the place out. The highlight of the restaurant is definitely the patio area but it was a bit too cold for me so I opted to sit inside. I stood at the front host stand for about 30 seconds without any acknowledgement from the staff. The man who eventually came to seat me looked at me first as if I had two heads. Not a very warm welcome. It was also a bit awkward because I was alone and he didn't seem to want to seat me at any of the four tops, even though it was nearly 2 and the lunch rush was ending. My server was very blah but efficient. I started with the Wadmalaw Onion bisque which was delicious and ended with the beet salad which was tasty but had WAY too many beets and not enough greens. Overall, a pretty disapointing experience.

My husband and I first visited the leaf a month after they opened. We were visiting from the northeast and a woman from Banana Republic recommended the restaurant. We loved it immediately! We sat at the bar and received fabulous service. We loved the atomosphere and the food was great. We enjoyed it so much we went back two more times before leaving Charleston. Well, a year and a half later we moved to Charleston and the first place we ate was the Leaf. We sat at the bar and the bartender remembered us and where we were from. How often does that happen? It is two years later and it is still one of our favorite places to dine. We enjoy lunch and Sunday brunch. Although we have seen a turnover in the bar and wait staff, we have never had a bad experience at the Leaf. Our only disappointment came when we went downtown yesterday (4th of July) and they were closed. What's up with that?! I was starving and looking forward to a margarita, chicken pita and sweet potato fries. We ended up at the King Street Grille! Blah!!

Great patio as well as inside. Light and airy. We had some salads - grilled ceasar with shrimp and the caprese - which both were very good. I will definitel go back to try some entrees and the burger which looked awsome.

I'm definitely a fan of this fun new hang out spot! It's a great place for happy hour and love the decor and ambiance. I recently got married a few weeks ago and ALL of our guests were out-of-towners as we just moved here. I had a word of mouth/text "schedule" for the weekend where guests can go to meet up. This is what I choose for Friday night. Being my wedding weekend, I completely forgot to call and tell them that "oh, by the way, you will be getting 100+ people at your bar tonight". A bunch of us arrived after the rehearsal dinner and everyone else was already there. The bar was PACKED and the staff handled it so well and very professional. Thank you!! Oh, and I apologized the bar tender for not giving them a heads up and he bought me and my fiance a bottle of champagne!! So sweet. I love the southern hospitality. The reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is we had gone there once for dinner and it was just OK. My husband got some crab cakes, and they were pretty soggy. I got some soup, that was good, but very small quantity. I did like the sweet potato fries a lot and my mom loved her dinner, the market fish of the day.

This place was an absolute disappointment and one of the worst serving experiences I've ever had in Charleston. We went with a group for Restaurant Week this past Friday night. We were seated immediately since we had a reservation. Half of our party of 8 was running a couple of minutes behind so we decided to wait before ordering drinks or anything. When they did arrive, it was several minutes before anyone came back to inquire about drinks and many more minutes before taking our food order. Since we were all ordering off the particular r.w. menu, it didn't take us very long to figure our what we wanted. The appetizers were by far the best thing about this meal and the only reason that Leaf Cafe is getting a 2 star instead of a 1 star. Between the group we covered most of the appetizers: spring rolls, scallop risotto, grilled Caesar salad and braised pork belly. The pork belly with wilted spinach and egg was delicious. Unfortunately it all went down hill from there. Many people in our party ordered the steak frittes and the cooking preferences ranged from medium-rare to well done. The servers messed up all the steaks, which we found out after we had starting eating them, and the next few minutes was spent playing musical chairs with our steaks. As the sole person who ordered the medium-rare, I can say that my steak was closer to the far end of medium, yet still the least rare. The parmesan truffle frittes were tasty, but the quantity varied drastically per plate. Some plates had a heaping pile while others had a small handful. The other entrees of salmon and eggplant moussaka were well received without any complaint. When the waiter came back to ask how the food was I tried to tell him that our steaks were mixed up, but he walked away without any acknowledgment that I had even said something. That was the tone of the service throughout the night. The nicest thing I can say about the service is that they did a reasonable job at keeping our water glasses filled, though they spilled water and ice cubes several times on the table. After the main course our server came back to inform some people in our party that the desserts they had ordered were sold out. Seriously? It's freaking Restaurant Week in Charleston, and Friday night, AND not quite 9pm though we had placed our dessert order at 7:30 when we ordered our meals. There are only three desert options and you run out of one of them before 9pm? That is mismanagement and planning on their part. So, those members of our party both chose the "Cheese Plate" since everyone else ordered the Chocolate Lava Cake. About 20 minutes later our dessert course finally came...and it wasn't good. The chocolate lava cake was a total of 4 small bites and wasn't even that good. It was warm with what looked like a drizzle of melted cream on top. The cake itself was not gooey or creamy like lave cake normally is. It was actually grainy tasting and left a weird film in your mouth. Compared to the cheese plate, I think I was lucky. When someone lists a cheese plate as a menu option, a normal person would assume there are 2-4 pieces of artisan cheese with some accompanies garnish and toppings. These plates came out with the saddest little sliver of brie you've ever seen, one single berry, a tiny dollop of honey and two small slices of baguette. It wasn't even that great of brie! It was pathetic and I wish I had thought to take a picture of it to accompany this review. Maybe if I was paying for the 3 for $20, I would let this slide, but as 3 for $30 I expected a higher caliber of food and better service. My boyfriend and I still walked out of there with a $100+ bill (including a $32 bottle of wine) for horrible service, messed up steak and miniscule desserts. I've heard that if you only hang out at the bar that your experience will be better. This was so bad that I'm not willing to give them a second chance.

Very strange atmosphere. The decor is quite confusing. Black leather chairs that are all peeled and worn. Every time we have been here it has smelled like dirty bar rags. Food is not overly impressive. The marinated chicken pita had a weird taste to it, and I wouldn't get it again. The crabcake was tasty, but left me wanting more. The service was odd, and we could smell smoke wafting in from outside. We will not be returning. Better food, atmosphere, and service elsewhere in Charleston. Note: I was drinking water. The waitress filled my glass with club soda on accident. It wasn't until I pointed it out to her that my glass was fizzy. Her response was "oh yeah, I thought I might've given one of my customers water from the wrong pitcher." Not impressed AT ALL.

We went here for a group dinner. The decor was very nice, but the food was very disappointing. Decent appetizers but horrible entrees. Crab cakes were very small and full of bread crumbs. The "avocado" on the crab dish was brown old guacamole. The chicken on the salads was dry and hard. The arugula and beer salad was just a can of chopped up beets. Like I said, very disappointing.

Beautiful space with a lovely patio and generous bar. Clearly. Local favorite we were glad to get 10 minutes out of downtown and find ourselves in a neighborhood. Good service, good portion size and nice selection. Had the portabella grilled cheese and truffle fries, and of course the frickles.

Incredibly overrated. I was disappointed by everything we ordered, including the pita chips we were given to make up for pathetically small portions. Best part of my meal was the cocktail, and decent dessert. Menu is boring and the food matches.

Had dinner here with a great friend and his spouse. We had a reservation, but were seated immediately, even though we arrived 30 minutes early. The atmosphere was very nice. Quiet enough where we could talk without yelling (something lacking in many places today). Clean, with nice wood flooring and appropriate decor. No odors or cleanliness issues noted in other reviews. Our waitress was very helpful knew all the specials and menu items well, and was able to answer our wine and menu questions without hesitation.. We ordered a good Napa Valley Merlot, and the meats/cheeses appetizer. Both were excellent choices, with the Guiness infused cheddar leaving a lasting impression. The only complaint was our waitress seemed to have difficulty pouring the first round of wine, as she spilled more than expected onto the table on all three glasses. Future rounds went better. I had the Flounder stuffed with Lump Crab. It was excellent, and I uploaded a picture of it. My friend had the 14oz Angus Ribeye with the potatoes, and his wife had the fresh ingredients risotto w/ beef short rib. While I did not taste either of their dishes, they looked amazing, and both said they were excellent. I would definitely return here.

Tried Leaf for Sunday brunch, because it had heard good things about it and was in the mood for something with a salad (I figured, with the name...). They offer no salads at brunch, FYI. We were seated promptly without a reservation in the nice outside area, and our waiter brought over the mimosa that comes with your meal. We both took one sip and made a face. Cheap juice and cheap booze, not even worth drinking. The food itself was fine, just richer than what I was in the mood for, but that is not their fault. Excellent breakfast potatoes! The service was not impressive over all. Our waiter seemed very disinterested in being there. His greatest offense, though, was showing no concern that we had both eaten less than half of our meals and barely touched our drinks. I'm in no hurry to go back.

Started off at the bar. Bar tender was great. Nice wine, great service. Unfortunately same cannot be said once we sat down for dinner. Prices have gone up and portions got smaller since my last visit and it took forever to get food even though it wasn't that busy.

I had a couple of bloody Mary, the meat and cheese plate and the short ribbed grilled cheese. All of which were awesome, I'm picky in my bloody Mary's and these were totally up to par. The meat and cheese plate was surprisingly large.for having a small one. The service was hurried but.just fine and the place is. Beautiful. Nothing bad to say, they did seem a little shirt staffed though poor things.

I can't tell you about the food, only the rude staff and inefficient service. Had a reservation and waited for 15 minutes at the door, with no host in sight. My husband finally asked the bartender, who said, "I don't know, he's in the dining room, I don't know what he's doing." No kidding, that was sort of our point. (They weren't even remotely busy.) So we finally gave up and left.

Booked online via OpenTable. Arrived to find out it was not on their computer. Problem #1. Overlooked it as we were seated right away and the place was open with huge doors opening up into the garden area. Our waiter Carey Dennis was great and came to our rescue in the end. Ordered the Beet Salad and the Fried Calamari (so hoped to see the sauteed Calamari appetizer special that was posted online). To my dismay the calamari came to table as if it was present during the Gulf BP Oil spill... it was drenched in that much oil (it had its own carbon footprint). Sharon's beet salad was just that... sort of plain Jane. Problem #2. Entrees: My first choice was the Eggplant dish and it was out for the night. My second choice was the linguine with count them only 6 pieces of clams. My wife well she had the major issue. She ordered the home made meatloaf and the first time it came out is was RAW on the inside. The slice was essentially a whole loaf and while the exterior was cooked it was not "grilled" long enough to cook the inside. (never heard of grilling a meat loaf either). We asked Dennis to take it back to the kitchen and bring another. Problem #3. Our 2nd order of meat loaf now 10-minutes into dinner (as I had just finished my meal) came out RAW again... What? Something a-miss in the kitchen (as did Dennis echo with a plethora of apologies). Problem #4. Throwing our hands up we ordered the risotto to go. Dennis felt so bad he comped us both entrees and only charged us for the salad and calamari. We gave him a big tip for his efforts. Will we ever be back? Not sure, with all the choices Charleston and Mt. Plznt has to offer, it may be months and months before we light upon the door. They will have to do much better to win my approval lest they get another review like this. Into this for years with over 450 reviews on TripAdvisor and I hardly ever give POOR or TERRIBLE,, but this was justified. SaleebScore: Food: 2/10, Service 8.5/10, Overall 3/10

We just had our rehearsal brunch at Leaf and it could not gone better. The restaurant is beautiful with a wonderful courtyard, and the staff was attentive and took care of our party of 80 during a busy Memorial Day weekend with ease. They provided a custom menu which included a frittata, a choice of eggs Benedict (filet, salmon, or crab cakes), Cobb salad, or a southern fried chicken sandwich. Across the board the food got rave reviews and the event was a huge success. Great place for large groups. One of Leaf's owners, Pierre, coordinated the whole event and was great to work with. We will come back whenever we are in Charleston and would recommend anyone having an event to consider this place.

Was here for a private event, not regular dinner so this review may not be 100% accurate. It was a set menu with wine pairings. All courses were great (as were the wines!) The staff was great as well. Food was fresh and the desserts were delicious :)

This place is hit or miss. The truffle fries are great, the noodle bowl looked like slop and was served with a bunch raw vegetables, really terribly prepared. The grilled Caesar is only grilled sometimes. When made right, its the best. Nice bar though, if that's what you are looking for.

After suffering two truly mediocre meals this past weekend in Charleston, I was thrilled to sit down at leaf and enjoy some truly delicious food. My friend and I arrived late evening - 9:30 or so - and were quickly seated on their subdued yet bustling patio. I felt relaxed as soon as I sat down. The chairs were comfortable and just far enough away from other diners that you felt like you were all a part of a fun night out, but not close enough to hear their conversations. When the waiter arrived, we quickly ordered mojitos and looked over the menu. I have excellent eyesight and yet that menu was a challenge to read. Not sure what they are going for with the teensy-tiny little script font but it was a struggle to decipher. I eat gluten-free and my friend is a vegetarian and she summed up our initial impression quite nicely: "It is so nice to go to a restaurant where you have more than one option." So true! Both of us struggled to decide what we would eat - there really were a lot of fresh, flavorful, choices that used simple, natural ingredients - no hidden meat stock or sneaky breading. After enjoying our drinks (delicious!) we finally ordered. We decided to share the large golden beet and blue cheese salad - we asked the waiter if that would be a problem and he said that would be fine. Unfortunately, I wish he had told us that it would be better if we just paid a dollar more and each ordered our own small salads because he presented us with an enormous bowl of dressed beets, arugula, and blue cheese and another enormous empty bowl and had us split it messily ourselves. Truly ridiculous. Had I known, we would have made a different choice. For dinner, my friend ordered the portabello sandwich with sweet potato fries and I ordered the asparagus with a soft boiled egg. Wow. Both meals were incredible. The flavors were delicious, the presentation was beautiful but, again, the detraction was the service. While we were still eating our salads, the server dropped off our meals on the edge of the table. It was so odd and awkward and, since the table was pretty small, there really wasn't enough room for all of those plates. At the end of the evening, our total bill came to about 45 dollars. We double checked the receipt to make sure nothing was forgotten. The prices are incredibly reasonable, the food is extraordinary but the waitstaff leaves a lot to be desired. I would highly recommend this restaurant but be prepared for some interesting service...

The food here is great but like others said the service is lacking. We have been in a few times and have had a waitress named leslie. to say that she had the personality of a sewer rat would be putting it nicely. She forgets the check, never comes back and has no idea what is going on. I would have to say it has deterred us several times from coming. But if you do go, the grilled cheese boccadillo and french toast are great. You may just want to suggest sitting in a section other than hers.

This place was such a let down. It was such a struggle to get good service; we ate at 8 and the restaurant was not full. Our server kept disappearing, at one point 4 people were looking for her. The appetizers we ordered were decent, but the main meals were terrible. One of the diners in our party was lactose intolerant and the server continued to bring her meals with cheese on them after explaining "no cheese!". Charleston has too many great restaurants for you to waste your time and money here- go somewhere else.

I had my doubts about the place after having Sunday brunch several times. The Sunday brunch is $15.00 and is probably worth half that. You do get a bloody mary with your meal. I ordered the Traditional platter which consisted of eggs, bacon and potatoes. Never too impressed with their breakfast. It also comes with tiny serving of fruit. Always felt they could do a better job on menu and quality of food. I knew i was walking a tightrope coming here. I guess I kept coming back because it does have a nice atomosphere and the brunch is cheap. Most restaurants located in tourist cities pay too much attention to serving the high profit/low prep time items such as alcohol and pay little attention to the food. After all it's pretty hard to screw up fried eggs. Then it happened. I was served dirty eggs fried eggs for brunch. The fried eggs were covered in dirty foul smelling oil. It was disgusting. Not sure if the cook was angry at me for returning eggs initially served. The first attempt my over easy eggs were well done, dry as the Sahara desert. I sent it back. Got filthy eggs instead. The place has a very nice atomosphere but it's unfortunate the bruch is below average. Stick to the booze here and forget the food. Perhaps one day they will get better management and focus on the food.

Picked this because it looked good. Sat on barstools that were truly uncomfortable. In the bar and not the dining room. I am not sure why as we had a reservation. Noisy. The service was OK until the end. Then our server, Leslie MacDowell completely ruined the evening. She had already given us a large dose of attitude. Not quite rude, but close. We certainly didn't get any of that old southern hospitality. I gave her a credit card and she disappeared. I mean disappeared. 10 minutes later I spotted her chatting with a group of friends. Reluctantly she came back with check and we paid. So the service was really disappointing. What a shame for a restaurant with good food. I had Brussels sprouts as a starter and duck confit with lentils for a mains. Very good all around although the confit may have been a little too salty. My sister had a beet and arrugala salad that was very good (I tried it) and mussels. The mussel portion was much larger than expected and perfectly seasoned. I would go back, but avoid the bar and Leslie!

Worst service I have ever had at a restaurant in any city around the globe. On a Sunday night with only 5 other people at the bar, our party of 3 patiently waited for 2 servers at the bar to take our drink order. One bartender ignored us as he chatted with a friend at the end of the bar for at least 15 minutes. Another man at the bar never even looked in our direction for the entire time. Finally we asked if we could order some drinks- quite politely. We proceeded to be verbally attacked in the most venomous, rude way possible - how dare we ask for service ! huh??? We are in a bar aren't we??? Needless to say, we all walked out - the first time we have ever done that. Clearly the staff there did not want to be working and had some personal issues that they decided to take out on their customers. We left and had a fabulous meal down the road at a delightful Italian restaurant. Fortunately, Charleston is chock full of amazing restaurants with over the top friendly service (Hall's Chophouse springs to mind) , so there is no need for anyone to endure and support a restaurant like Leaf, which treats good polite customers with contempt.

Leaf is a definite dig for me. The food here makes me squeal with delight. The service though, not so much. They usually have some dece local brews on draught, too. All in all, a great little spot if you're not expecting an attentive wait staff - which I think is forgivable in their case because the location, the food and the interior are top notch... Oh, and I LOVE the huge open doors that let the breeze in during the fall. Swooooooon.

If you're visiting Charleston and looking for a nice place to eat while you're here - DO NOT eat here. If you live here and are looking to try something new, this is not it. I sat at the bar, and while the bartenders were extremely friendly and attentive, the food was considerably less than mediocre. I started off with a Caesar salad which was still attached to the root, which is fine, I've seen this done before. The Caesar dressing, however, had absolutely no flavor and the Romaine had been thrown on the grill for about 10 seconds. Again, this is fine, but I did not care for half warm/half cold lettuce in my mouth. Pick one. Also, the Caesar salad was so monstrous since it was basically an entire head of lettuce, it would have been nice to know that this specific salad could easily, and probably should be, shared for 2. My entree: I ordered the Salmon and asked for it to be served medium well. When it came out it was definitely still Medium, incredibly small in size (maybe 4.5 oz) and also incredibly fishy. The whole dish had a funny taste to it so I ate around the outside of the salmon avoiding the middle raw pieces. Also, at the price I was paying for salmon, 4.5 oz seems ridiculously small (especially considering how huge the salad was...I'm starting to see how they're cutting and making up for costs). Lastly, my creme brûlée. It was actually good except for the fact they wanted to go for aesthetics over practicality. The brûlée was almost 1/8 of an inch thick and cut into a triangle and stuck up right in the middle of the creme. My spoon couldn't make a crack in the brûlée it was so thick - so basically I ate creme wondering why on earth the brûlée would be served this way. It was impossible to eat! Sure enough, as soon as I left my stomach was in torrents. I spent the rest of the night on or over the toilet. I believe it was the salmon which tasted funny from the beginning. I will not be eating here again. The food was not only bad but it made me sick. My disappointment is furthered by reading the other comments and realizing that the owners have taken no strides towards redeeming their restaurant. I just wish I had read the reviews first so I could have taken my money elsewhere.

A Work In Progress... If you're like me you're probably wondering why a restaurant would call itself "Leaf". When you go there you will still not receive any clues. There is also no online presence. No website, facepage, twitter, menu posting, etc. I would suggest Leaf might think about enlisting Yoursocialmedia.com . A company that does a great job of driving businesses through tactical social media positioning. I know that they have helped me tremendously. OK, enough shamless promotion. Home of the former Vickery's Bar and Grill Leaf has undergone an extensive three month renovation. After a "soft opening" the weekend of the Cooper Bridge Run it has been open only for dinner ever since. Our bartender mentioned that they "hoped to open for lunch and Sunday brunch very soon". But even though we did have a bit of a conversation with him the reason why it was named Leaf remained somewhat of a mystery. The restaurant itself is cavernous. I had not been to Vickery's but apparently this light and airy restaurant is a far cry from what it was. High ceilings, long, expansive windows, 10'+ wide door frames ornament the restaurant. As we waited at the bar for our guests to arrive we overlooked the very popular patio area which was filled with Adirondack Chairs and tables. It really seemed like the place to be. Further sleuthing deduced that there are three principle partners in the business. One that was primarily in charge of the remodel, one that was in charge of the front of the house/restaurant and one that was in charge of the bar. Two of the three were on site the night we were there, quick to greet customers and say hello. Our friends soon arrived and we were seated in the dining room. I would be stunned if this restaurant were not a "work in progress". Construction was not complete and the restaurant itself was "stark" - no artwork, plants, décor, just plain walls. There were high end black leather chairs and not-so-high-end tables. Piped in music came and went. The acoustics were just so-so, and at times it was very hard to hear one another. And Pet Peeve #9 was in play. The table rocked the entire night. We tried to adjust the wobble stoppers but it continued to rock. We had our own 'Table Tsunami' going on as the beverages shifted two and fro. Can someone please write a checklist to open the restaurant and add this to it!! But it's on to the food, as in "food is the star". On a very high note for only being open barely two weeks the service was good. Our server was attentive, not intrusive and seemed to have a good understanding of the menu. We began by placing our beverage order. When we asked, "What kind of Cabernets do you have by the glass?" they only had one, which we ordered. The Stoli Cosmo that was delivered was wrong on many levels. It was the color of dark Hawaiian Punch and it tasted like something was spoiled. Perhaps that was the cherry in it. Who puts a cherry in a cosmo for God's sake? It was sent back and we stuck with good ol' H20 for awhile. We ordered three appetizers to share - Fried Frickles (which were pickles, and no, we did not have an idea why they were called Frickles), Fried Calamari and a Beet Salad. The Beet Salad was stellar. Red and Golden Beets lightly dressed served over arugula. Even our non-beet eating friend was coerced into trying it. The Fried Frickles were lightly battered and fried. Served with a very light aioli, these were also a hit. The Fried Calamari was also good but it was very pale versus golden brown batter that we're used to seeing. It was also served with aioli, which it needed as it was somewhat bland. Like clockwork, just as we were finishing our appetizers, our entrees were heading out from the kitchen. The speed of the food service continued to impress us. The homemade meatloaf was shaped like a strip steak and appeared to be pan seared. It sat atop a mound of mashed potatoes and was served with grilled asparagus. My friend said, "This is comfort food that is comforting." A grilled salmon sandwich on a light roll served with truffle oil fries also was a big win. The Beef Tenderloin although perfectly cooked seemed to be not a great cut of beef. On the up side, it was served with slices of sweet potatoes and grilled asparagus that were tasty. And now on to what I ordered. I seem to have a habit of always ordering the wrong thing. Although a tad full from the appetizers I ordered the Basil Leaf Capellini pasta dish that was served with Brie, basil and. I had asked if it was served cold as I could not understand how Brie could be mixed with pasta and not come out gummy. When in doubt... go with your gut as that's exactly how it was served - a gummy, glutinous pasta/Brie mix. The flavor of the Brie was so strong that it overpowered the dish. I had a bite or two and then rode out the rest of the dinner by moving it around my dish. Thank goodness for Frickles.

After having had a great experience here several years ago, we returned last night and were sorely disappointed. Our waiter was short with us as soon as we sat down and made it clear he didn't want us to be there all night. When we asked if we could get a full drink menu, another waitress told us, "the drink menu here sucks" and wouldn't give us one. Our food came out cold, bland, and overcooked and our waiter was not apologetic. We asked to speak to the manager who handled it better and comped us the meals that had come out wrong (6 out of 8). Still, the dining experience was pretty tense because of how our waiter was treating us. I love the patio there so I'm sad to not be retuning!

Let me first off by saying that I am being generous with the one star. This plAce deserved a negative star. My friends and I decided to try a new place several weeks ago and chose this place. When we arrived on a Sunday around 630 there was no hostess so we ended up just going and asking the bartender regarding our reservation. When our waiter came to the table he started off by stating they were out of most of the menu and it was easier for him to tell us what they had. Then after he completely messed up our drink order he never refilled our drinks and my friend actually had to go up the bar and get refills on all 8 of ours drinks. The bartender messed up my Pepsi with grenade after making it correct once. To keep it short there was hardly anyone in the restaurant yet our food took well over an hour to get. When we finAlly got the food, half our food was undercooked and all our food was cold. The truffle fries are just weird tasting worse than Burger King fries and the burger was horrible and I actually got sick from the burger. Overall horrible service and horrible overpriced food. I just wish I read the yelp reviews before trying. My advice is SKIP THIS PLACE!

I don't know where the poor reviews are coming from. We went on a Thursday afternoon after the lunch rush, so the restaurant was almost empty. Service was just fine. The beer and wine selection isn't extensive, but its good. My husband and I both couldn't pass up the short rib grilled cheese, which was absolutely amazing. His sweet potato fries were good, but my truffled fries were off the charts. Crispy, salty, truffle-y (yes I know it's probably not "real" truffle oil but whatever) and sprinkled with cheese (Manchego?) and chives. To die for! Outdoor seating on the patio was lovely. Their dinner menu looked good, too. Definitely going back!

Stopped here on a hunger whim and left a happy camper. Very creative menu, very fresh ingredients, great ambiance and friendly staff - the place does a lot very right.

Ok food. We stopped here first for our first meal on our weekend in Charleston. We had heard good things about it. It is good. Just good. Service is good. Relaxing outdoor dining. Inside was nice. Fried battered chicken was good. No complaints just not a dining experience unlike any other I have daily anywhere else. Ok if you want a bite that is ordinary and you are not at all adventurous about food.

Caprese was good, Asparagus w soft cook egg was excellent. We were there at 2 pm and it was not crowded. We were greeted immediately. Crab cakes had a bad fishy taste. Short rib sandwich was ok. Sweet potato fries excellent! I would not go back. Here is my feedback to owners: Review how your employees greet and treat patrons. I would give you a B-. In addition, the crab cakes were really bad. I did not complain, just wanted to eat the sweet potato fries and be done with it. The atmosphere was very nice.

Excellent atmosphere, loved the outdoor patio. The food was excellent -- I recommend the caprese salad and the portobello burger. Husband had the ribeye and really enjoyed it. Slightly on the pricey side but a lot of restaurants in Charleston seem to be overpriced just because tourists will pay. Edited to include: we used a restaurant.com $25 certificate with NO problems.

Beautiful clean, airy environment both inside and out. The Bloody Mary was very mediocre, but the waiter did not mind one bit that we sat and sipped for hours on the patio while blowing bubbles and growing more and more inappropriate.
