I've been to La Tabella for dinner and brunch and I can officially attest to the fact it's pretty darn tasty. I should also point out that dining options in James Island are pretty slim, so it's extra exciting to have good, classic Italian to choose from. Both times I've been we sat at the bar. It's a small cozy bar where you can quickly strike up a conversation with the other patrons. For dinner, I had the pasta alla vodka with shrimp. Hearty, heavy Italian with lots of shrimp. Forrest Gump would've approved and I had leftovers for lunch the next day. I was a little hesitant about an Italian restaurant for brunch. I mean the Olive Garden is a place you go for breadsticks not beignets, am I right or am I right? Seriously though, La Tabella's brunch did not disappoint. I get an omelet everywhere I go and always compare them to one another. The veggie omelet here was the bomb.com . Peppers, cremini mushrooms, artichoke hearts, and mozzarella. Sold. The mimosas were also the perfect ratio of OJ to champagne. La Tabella is the kind of place where you could go with parents, a date, friends, coworkers, really anyone. It's a nice but not pretentious classic Italian restaurant that's a real crowdpleaser for just about anyone.

Huge miss. I have been here before and was satisfied but tonight was a disappointment. At 5pm on Sunday we were told they were out of Ravioli and Manicotti. The service was good unfortunately the kitchen failed to meet expectations. How can you claim to be an Italian restaurant with out having the staples? It will be a while till we eat here again.

La Tabella is great if you know what to expect, so allow me to prepare you: Food: Very classic, very filling, tasty Italian. Think lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs, chicken parm. You are not going to find anything experimental, creative, or unusual in the way of Italian here. I've had the meatball slider appetizer (which was 6-8 sliders. HUGE!), various pasta dishes, pizza, and salads. Nothing disappointed. Ambiance: It's like something I would find in a small midwestern town for a nice meal out. The servers could be from said town. Friendly, down-to-earth, not a lot of fluff. You can tell there are regulars here and people know them and what they like. Older crowd overall. It's a little to bright to be considered an intimate, date night kind of restaurant, but hey - you can see everything on your plate. Price: Reasonable. It's not dirt cheap but it's less expensive than Mondo's Delite, Al Di La, Wild Olive, etc. They have happy hour, pretty sure they have lunch specials, and they have dinner specials every night. It's worth checking out but go into knowing what you know now that you have gotten to the end of my review. Fin.

A little out there from most areas, but worth the ride. Nice little restaurant in a strip mall. Makes you feel like you're in Italy when you walk in. Cozy is the word. Food is better than average, and nicely priced. People are very nice and really do care. Try everything, it's all good. Frank G

I've always wished that I could become a regular at a restaurant. I envy those people that come in and everyone knows them knows what they want to eat without even asking and treats them like family! I believe this is the place that can make my wish come true. My roommate and I came here to try restaurant week but decided that nothing struck our interest and we we're really wanting a pasta dish. The atmosphere here is on point! Dark and cozy and everyone treats you like family. The waitress was very nice and gave good suggestions. I ordered the penne vodka with shrimp and mushroom. The noodles were cooked perfectly but the sauce was just okay. It kinda tasted like it was out of the jar. Everything else was fabulous and I can't wait to come back!

La Tabella is tucked away in a shopping mall strip on the Harborview side of James Island. We have been here 4 times, always for dinner. We immediately got a positive first impression based on the group gathered at the front community table and bar who were clearly regulars. The restaurant is a nice balance of casual slightly-upscale American Italian. The menu is large and should have something for everyone. One night I was craving Italian but my husband was not. He decided on the Pastrami Burger and said it was one of the better burgers he's had in Charleston. I have no compliants on any of the entrees I've tried (lasanga, spag/meatballs, pasta alla vodka) and usually they are large enough portions for leftovers. I often had order envy watching tasty looking entrees walk by. Too bad we don't have the time or budget to dine here more often to try everything. The wait staff are always friendly. We personally prefer La Tabella over its main James Island Italian competition Mondos.

This place is consistently good! It's good traditional Italian. The bolognese, eggplant parm and meatball sliders are amazing! The food is always a 5, but the service at times could be better. Caroline, Chad and Bright are awesome though!

In a town not known for Italian, this was a refreshing discovery. Was it the greased back hair of the server or traditional Northern patrons or the polite service or the great food. It was all of the above. I have gone for brunch and for a reuben in the last few days and have been pleased both times. I have to say, the chefs are wonderful and the quality is amazing. It is hard to find at the corner of a strip mall with a large tree in front of it and Piggly Wiggly as a neighbor. There are daily lunch and dinner specials as well as a nice happy hour. Tuesday is $6.00 Reuben sandwiches and $2.00 Vodka all day as an example. Free wife too!!

Hidden gym off the beaten path on James Island. I live in downtown Charleston and almost strictly go to restaurants there just because of proximity. This place makes me want to venture off the peninsula more often. Great, Classic Italian food. No frills, good service.

Definitely the best restaurant on james Island. Probably the best value in the charleston area as well. I have had dinner here at least 6 or 7 times. The pork ossobucco is absolutely delicious. Can't go wrong with any of their fresh seafood specials either. Great wine selection and very friendly staff definitely worth a try you won't be disappointe

This is our "go to" restaurant on James Island, where we live. Prime Rib night is wonderful. The Ba Da Bing shrimp salad is huge Nd delicious. My husband rotates between the Italian dishes, and I will often have seafood. Service is good. Lunch is also great!

Food is decent but the service is one of the slowest around. Went there for my birthday a few months ago and again on this past Sunday. Any other locals that I've talked to say the same thing. There seem to be plenty of waitresses but no one is in a hurry to do anything.

Non-pretentious American-Italian (I mean that as a compliment). VERY large servings--you will have leftovers!

We enjoyed a good meal at La Tabella. Although the angel hair pasta was delicate and the dish was tasty, I felt that the pasta portion served with the shrimp picata was rather stingy and the presentation--the small cluster of shrimp next to a meager portion of pasta--was odd for a dish of this type. Also, the flavors of the sweet-potato ravioli did not work well. Salmon and risotto were nicely prepared. Good kids menu. The interior was nicely appointed, but there is little separation between the bar and front tables and a couple of loud bar patrons can really color the meal.

  • Rob C.

I'm a semi-regular of this place. I would probably go more if I didn't have two little kids. Bottom line, this is a great neighborhood joint - great Italian food, very respectable wine and liquor options, and a friendly staff. Try their antipasto. The ambiance in the little bar area is great. I would recommend they refresh the look of the dining area. Its in C- shape. Needs some love. But Whatever. There are 1001 other reasons to go to this unassuming gem...

Off the beaten path a little from Downtown Charleston, tucked away in a shopping center off Harborview Rd on good ole James Island, here lies an Italian restaurant the name LaTabella. Great service, friendly staff, and exceptional food. They always have great lunch and dinner specials so just make sure you call ahead for the daily deals!

  • Annie B.

Food is usually great, but every now and then you get a bad one. The service sucks, the restaurant is too small, not big enough for wheelchairs, etc. we don't go that often anymore.

  • Regina A.

The food is...okay. Linguini Stefani good because the sausage was good; alfredo not so much. Marsala so-so. Service was abysmal. The hostess tried hard and was friendly but it took forever to get a drink order, bread (which was tasty) and then an HOUR for food. Admittedly, it was crowded but restaurants are supposed to be prepared for that. Experience was even worse because the owner or manager (I think) was wandering around talking to his friends/patrons shmooshing other people out of the way and in general being rude. I understand, and love, neighborhood restaurants but this was just inconsiderate and took away, rather than added, to the experience. Charleston needs good italian, and I guess the competition to this is Mondo, which is better, and several cuts above are definitely Al Di La and Wild Olive. I'd definitely give this one a skip.

Last night was our first trip to this restaurant based on others ratings here on Yelp. My wife and I will definitely go back. First, our waiter, Chris, was outstanding! He was super friendly, very attentive, and his overall service was a pleasure. We started with the mussels appetizer and thought it was cooked perfectly and came in the butter, wine and garlic sauce with bread for dipping, oh so good. I had the veal parm which I thought was done exactly as I had hoped. The veal was super tender and the sauce was the right complement, not over powering the taste of the veal. My wife had the shrimp and scallops in a pesto sauce and loved her dish as well. The serving was too much to finish in one sitting so we had some leftovers to enjoy at a later time. I definitely want to try the seafood in spicy marinara next visit, along with some of the other very appealing appetizers we saw being served to others. Overall great experience and definitely recommend this place!

Great Italian on James Island! Knowledgable staff, tremendous food! Our new clubhouse for the past 6 months. Check it out for yourselves. Try the Chicken Picatta or the Eggplant Parm. If a restaurant can't make those well, it's not Italian. These are both out of the park!!

Stumbled into this place for a quick lunch on a week day. The place was decent and I would like to return for dinner sometime. There is a small bar of five stools for the single diner with two TV's, and overall the place is pretty small and at the end of a non-descript shopping plaza. We had a patty melt and a club sandwich, pretty standard fare, but tasted fresh and good. Had some really great looking sausage, pastrami and other various Italian type sandwiches on the menu, along with some great looking pastas. As I said, would love to come back and sample some pasta along with some wine. The place seemed like it had potential, but was more of a dinner spot.

Best thing to happen to James Island!!! Fantastic Italian cuisine and house specialties: whole crispy flounder, Osso Bucco, prime rib, seafood and pasta dishes, and the fried oysters are a must! Wine and happy hour specials and the service is impeccable! Have not tried the Sunday brunch but can only imagine that it's equally as good. This restaurant never disappoints and it's obvious that many James Islanders feel the same way. Who needs downtown?

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
