A culinary experience. One of the best restaurants I have ever been to. They treated us like a King and Queen. 5 different people waited on us/did various things- what a team. I highly recommend the foie gras- it was like a dessert. I will definitely come back when I'm in town again...Don't miss this.

Eating my way through Charleston - Part 2 After dinner at Poe's Tavern it was time to head downtown and grab something sweet before calling it a night, so we jumped in the Volvo and set the GPS for Charleston Grill. I wasn't sure if we were going to be let in wearing street clothes so I made sure to put on some khaki's and a button-up before heading over. When we arrived we were greeted at the main entrance by a valet and escorted straight to the Charleston Grill (which is located inside the Five-Star Rated Charleston Place Hotel). We told them when we sat that we were only there for dessert and after a quick look at the menu I decided to go with the Peach and Pistachio Baked Alaskan with Honey Roasted Peach Ice Cream, Pistachio Cake, Poached Peach, a Lavender Peach Gastrique, and Sicilian Pistachios. I was only mildly disappointed that due to "safety reasons" they weren't able to light the Alaskan on fire at the table but after the first bite I forgot all about that. Every bite was smooth and the poached peaches paired perfectly with the honey roasted peach ice cream.

This is the best place in town, Visiting for a few days they made our anniversary dinner so special, I can not list the attention to detail they had. It is simply worth every penny. I don't think is $$$$ because I went to other places that were a bit less cost but a lot less quality over all. In few words whenever I go back I will be there for sure and if you visit the are you should. Ambiance and great as well. live nice classy music another plus!!

I was so very disappointed in my return trip after many years. My evening included plans to treat a friend to dinner in the bar - which the website states is welcomed as did my confirmation via phone. However, upon arriving and trying to order discovered that Chef Weaver has discontinued that "privilege" and apparently isn't particularly concerned that her website states otherwise. I got to see her berate a staff member in view of guests - backing up a bit of what F&B insiders sometimes say about her - a less than gracious sight. Food: bar menu choices were disappointing since we planned to have dinner - although for bar food it's a decent selection! Sadly our two crab cakes were lackluster and fell apart. They were also oddly different one from another and our fried oysters came out cold. Cheese plate mediocre. We were overrun by a group of poorly dressed, name tag wearing convention goers - one who literally fell out of his seat into mine and his wife hit the floor: no one on staff did anything to control this mess. We paid up for our nice champagne and left. It was sad for me since my Daddy and I had enjoyed this place years ago visiting from 'Bama and I wanted to be wowed by Chef Weaver - a Bama gal - now that I live in Charleston. Chef- you did this girl wrong on this particular night.... I hope to hear that I should give it another run.

We celebrated a bday here but this is an all occasion restaurant and a must for all visitors coming through town. Their unique menu was divided into understandable sections ie local, lush, etc. Or one can experiment with the tempting "sampling" menu. With four people at our table, we vowed to order unique dishes so we could share. I came for the foie gras and was not disappointed; I was lucky to get bites of the melt in your mouth rack of lamb, and the tasty duck duo. The scallops were fabulous. Each course was pleasantly interrupted with the chefs palate cleansing tasters. The wine menu is huge but a simpler wine menu adorns the front of the menu. The carrot cake bites unique but should have tried the creme brûlée instead. Staff was attentive. The live music alone is worth coming to this king street venue.
(5)Sherri M.
Great wines but I'm not crazy about the menu. It's broken down in to 4 categories and rack one has apps, entrees and dessert. It's probably great for foodies but I'm to basic for their menu.
(3)Gary E.
The class of the American South, to be certain. A "must" for discerning visitors and locals alike. Simply the best. Chef Michele continues with creativity and innovation. Three knowledgeable sommeliers. Look no further than here
(5)Rich B.
Killer wine list and knowledgeable staff in that regard. Upscale and grown-up vibe located in a hotel and next to a Gucci store. Please dress up when you come here. Lots of small plate options if you are at the bar. Octopus and the foie gras dish are highlights (although that foie gras dish, while stupendous is a bit sweet and you should probably save it for last).
(4)Kevin L.
This restaurant is amazing... from the staff to the pristine environment... from the overwhelming wine list to the ambiance... and let us not ever forget the most beautifully presented and succulent food in Charleston. 5 stars only because there aren't more!!! Thanks Taylor and Barbie (wait staff) for making our night special! You both were awesome!
(5)Tony K.
Absolutely great dining experience. The wait staff is very attentive to your needs plus they bring sampling from the kitchen as a welcome and a thank you. The food is very favorable and each side is a stand alone star. This dining experience is all about you and not turning tables like most restaurants focus on today. My wife chose the filet medallions and they will melt in your mouth, I chose the pork chop served with grits and red eye gravy, unreal! It was the first time I could not eat the whole plate. The portion size is very generous and when you think your done and your thinking about skipping dessert, don't! The pairing of dessert wine with our creme brûlée was perfection! You will be talking about your experience at the Charleston Grill for a very long time, we highly recommend this restaurant.

Closes at 10 not 10:30 pm as indicated on Yelp Ok, now that I cooled off, and they opened up... I had breakfast and dinner. service is great, they have Gluten-free options. The servers not only know what Gluten is, they are very attentive. The food is excellent and so is the service.

This is one of my favorites restaurants ever. My other favorite being Wolfgang Puck's Spago in Beverly Hills. I have been here twice before a few years ago. This time, I was in Charleston for the weekend and had only one fine dining meal that I could schedule. My fiance had read about Husk and wanted to go there, but luckily they were booked on that particular Sunday night and we went to Charleston Grill. (I've been to Husk and while it's cool and trendy, I was secretly happy it was booked.) We showed up for our 6:45 pm reservation and were seated immediately. The dining room wasn't too crowded or loud which it can get on prime nights. We had a two-server team that night and their service was exceptional. We looked over the menu and everything looked good. The menu is divided into food style subsections such as "Posh" or "Southern". We noticed that there was a 6-course tasting menu and asked our server about it. He told us basically we could tell him what things we liked and he would tell the sous chef (in charge that night), then they would put together a personalized tasting for us. We decided to go for it and added the middle-priced wine pairings. Best decision- no regrets at all. It was amazing. Every course was fresh, innovative, interesting and different. One of the courses was a scallop topped with some kind of meat (maybe blood pudding?) and they paired it with a Barolo. When I saw that scallop paired with the Barolo, I thought to myself "WTF!??". But it was perfect! Soooooo goooooood. OMG. It was so much food and so much wine and so tasty. I really want to go back as soon as I can. In addition to the amazing food, one of the things I love about Charleston Grill is the live music. Love, love, love. That night a duo played a lot of cover songs classical-style which was great. In summary, the sous chef, servers, somm, and musicians get high marks in my book. Thanks for a wonderful meal and experience. I'll be savoring it for years and years!
(5)John H.
We decided to try Chef Michelle Weaver's 6 course tasting menu. We added the lowest end wine pairings, which were actually quite high end and perfectly paired with the food. This was a real treat, with each dish being creative, delicious, and served at the prefect temperature. The service was impeccable - attentive but not intrusive. This was probably the best food and service I've ever had in a restaurant!
(5)Ned M.
Well... the food i must say was very good, they offered us a muse bouche (a tasting) which was unexpected and a nice surprise, the meal itself was exquisite and after the meal we were offered us complementary chocolate sweets and cookies. However, the service at such a fine dining establishment was lackluster, we were waiting alot for a waiter, when he came by he hardly smiled, I felt like we were inconveniencing him. Would not go back. I paid $44 a plate for 5 scallops without a side, the service at such an exclusive place should be outstanding. I've been to other places where the chair is pulled out for you, napkin placed on your lap, never a wait etc.
(2)Eve H.
Great experience. And, great food options.
(5)Jeremy C.
Simply put...phenomenal! Im not sure I have had a better dining experience in my entire life. From Chef Michelle's succulent creations all the way to Sommelier Rick Rubel's wine pairings I experienced nothing short of pure bliss. Get the 6 course tasting menu! Amazing!!!! Spring for the the top end wine pairings its certainly worth it! Sea scallops, Seared foie gras, perfect lamb chop, mango pickled shrimp, Grilled Kurobuta Pork Chop..all paired with out of this world wines. Chateau Y'quem, Corton, Romanee Conti, Shaefer Hillside Select, etc. The last time I had an experience like this evening was in Paris. Wow!

Yup the charleston Grill is as good as it gets! I have a thing for not giving five stars but this place is a five star restaurant hands down. The minute you enter the Grill you are happily greeter at the front desk. You know you are in for a pleasant experience. How many times have you not been greeted or it was an effort for the hostess or host to look up? Not happin here! The whole place screams fine dining. It's just not about food it's the experience. We had a drink at the bar and my wife ordered an old fashion which was the best she ever had. again the bartender was on his game and was pleasant and knowledgeable. We were seated and greeted by name by more than one staff member. Trust me the food does need need any extra explanation you'll be amazed at whatever comes out of that kitchen. We did have crab cakes that were the best I have ever tasted. Not sure these cakes ever touched bread crumbs nothing but crab! My pet peeve has always feeling ripped off by wine prices (ok I'm cheap) but I will say the wine list has affordable choices and the wine sommelier was helpful and informative without being condescending. You knew she enjoyed her job. We had the pork chop and fillet and both were cooked to perfection. I'm betting not too many plates ever get sent back to the kitchen. The scallops are again are like no other scallop dish you have had. When I go back and if I happen to have the same waiter Bryan I let him choose what to order. everyone of his suggestions was spot on. This is a classy place in a classy location. Definitely should be on your list to visit if you are living in or visiting Charleston.

This wonderful restaurant never disappoints me. The food is wonderful, and The service is top notch. Michelle Weaver produces an excellent dinner every Time. Mickey, makes everyone feel very special. Love the place!

I took my husband here from his 31st birthday. I was looking for a romantic setting when I was booking my reservation and this place seemed like what I was looking for. They have live jazz music and you can request to sit at booths that are close to the music. Which I did and we have a great seat! The music was smooth and a great addition to our dinner. There is dim lightening. The restaurant is very clean as well as the ladies rest room. The staff is very professional and friendly. They didn't mind taking pictures of us when we asked. They have coat service and they validate parking. There is an extensive wine list and they also have a cocktail list. The menu is sectioned off by region; however, you can order from any menu to mix and match. They offer a chef section where she prepares a special menu for you; if requested. All items are seasonal except the crab cake which is to die for! That was the best crab cake I have ever tasted. My husband order a shrimp appetizer that was also very flavorful. We both ordered the pork chop. It was good but not my favorite. I know I will be back for that crab cake though!
(5)Kimberly B.
The restaurant high end good excellent service. My steak was over cooked but it was whisked away and replaced in very short order. The waiter, Chip, did an incredible job of description and recommendation of menu options. There were also several "tastes from the chef " that were brought out to us. Very nice experience. $$$
(5)Elissa N.
Charleston Grill is one of the most consistently best restaurants in Charleston and I would say in the country. The service and food is phenomenal. Rick, the sommelier, is so well educated and approachable about wines and chooses the perfect paring for the tasting menu. The service is educated, smart and accommodating. The atmosphere is perfect, lighting, refined but not snooty. In addition, the background and bar music ads a touch of elegance. I have never had better crab cakes or foie gras in my life. Nothing that touched my lips at Charleston Grill disappoints, and it is worth every penny.
(5)Don P.
I had dinner there last night and was extremely happy. I had the 6 course tasting menu and the top flight wine pairing. The 6 courses are customized to each individual diner and all were excellently prepared and creatively constructed. The service is a team effort and exquisitely executed! They know how to be attentive without being intrusive, thank you Nicole. My meal service took about 3 hours which was well paced. The chef, Michelle, came out and gave me a little insight into her inspiration and vision, which was very much appreciated. Mitch the general manager was my sommelier for the evening. He made some very bold and and risky pairings that worked fantastically! If you're looking for a wonderful meal and are not adverse to spending a few shekels this is the place.

We dined here as part of our stay at the hotel and were expecting to be wowed, based on the excellent reviews. Indeed, wow was one word of many unprintable ones that came to mind later. Our server was excellent. The food was excellent. The employee who intruded on our experience to shush our young daughter and made her cry therefore ruined what would have otherwise been a very nice evening. Our reservation was at 530, in an almost empty restaurant, and she was making normal happy baby sounds. We were not informed when we made the reservation - and clearly mentioned her age to enquire about the suitability of bringing her - that children were as unwelcome as we discovered. We travel regularly and have had no prior issues bringing her to nice restaurants, as we take great pains to keep her happy and respect other diners. The man who came to our table without cause to shush her also touched her without our permission. He claimed later to be "playing with her," however we did not require a playmate to enjoy our dinner, and his very unplayful words as he stroked her cheek (to my horror) were "Shush." With his unfriendly demeanor and inappropriately intimate touching, of course our daughter became upset. And of course, we couldn't get back her back on track and had to leave shortly afterwards, leaving our 5 star dinner in doggie bags. We expect when dining with a child that an early departure may become necessary, but in this case we were clearly shown the door by the restaurant. This behavior was inappropriate, disruptive, and a not a little bit creepy. Our server again was wonderful, very sweet to our daughter and was apologetic when we informed him of what had transpired. Based on this unpleasant experience, however, we do not recommend Charleston Grill with or without young diners.

We went for a company dinner and this was extremely delicious with an upscale atmosphere. Think full table setting and white table cloths. I recommend the steak and the Brussels sprouts for the table!
(5)Jay J.
A troubled steak house. This was suppose to be a very nice night out, sadly it was just not good. We made reservations well in advance, and even though the restaurant was half empty we were set next to a dirty window in a very dark spot. Service was erratic we saw our server probably not more than three times. It took her assistant 4 trips to serve the main course for two people.... really?? We ordered a very expensive steak... Medium rare... Unfortunately it was served well done.... How can a steak house not know how to cook a steak. At one point, the manager stopped by to confirm "how delicious" our meal was, when we commented it was ok and we're about to complain he walked away. Charleston has several other steak houses, I recommend you avoid this one and try one of the others.
(2)Clare A.
To be honest, not worth the price tag! Don't get me wrong, the food was all fine/good-- potato gratin, tomato pie, and duck were among the best. But the rest was just very standard, served under fancy lighting with a high price to make you think it was better than it was. I will say though, service was absolutely excellent, and they made for an exquisite experience despite the subpar food.
(4)Clo K.
Wonderful all around. Music was great and it was a very relaxed atmosphere. Drinks and food was out of this world. Steak tartar and flounder was made to perfection. Service was excellent. Had a wonderful time.
(5)Julie L.
Amazing food and amazing service! The waiter brought us special things in addition that we only hinted at wanting and there were many surprise additions to our meal from the chef! How divine! Great service that was very attentive and professional. The wines and champagnes were delectable! I'll definitely be coming back here again!
(5)Barry B.
Fabulous menu, wine list, ambiance, service! Tripadvisor listed as #2 rated in Charleston with $$$. The #1 rated was listed as $$$$. We chose Charleston Grill both for location and for price and were surprised to find some entries and appetizers for over $100 each. Once we were there we decided to go for it and I have to say IT WAS WORTH IT! Execution was impeccable, portions huge and all was far above expectations.
(4)Caitlin M.
My husband and I went here on our honeymoon. I don't remember exactly what we ordered (sort of irrelevant since the menu has changed), but the food was delicious. Service was good but a little stuffy. I preferred Halls Chophouse for fine dining in Charleston, but Charleston Grill was certainly quieter.
(5)Diana M.
I have to say that I was a bit disappointed in Charleston Grill. I walked in with super-high expectations so maybe I was setting myself up for disappointment to begin with. The service was exceptional and the restaurant itself is lovely. My first sadness came when reviewing their menu, my choices were limited given that I don't care for seafood. I let my husband choose the restaurant that night so I let that go and didn't hold it against the restaurant. I chose the beef tenderloin and while the cut of meat was excellent the sauce they used didn't agree with my taste-buds. I ended up eating about half and my husband ate the other half. He did say that his meal was excellent, it was a fish but I can't recall what he ordered specifically. We also ordered a side of scalloped potatoes which were very good and then I decided to try dessert. I chose the Lemon Meringue dessert and it was also tasty but something was missing from the flavor. Overall I would say this place was 3-4 stars but a definite disappointment over what I had expected.
(3)David H.
It doesn't get much better than this. Fantastic service. The staff was quite attentive and used my name almost always when visiting the table. Great wine list and was reasonably priced as well. We ordered a bottle of 2008 Silver Oak Cab. For appetizers, I had the crab cake dressed with shrimp. For dinner, my customer and I both had the flounder with shrimp. All were savory delights. No room left for dessert.

Sadly this is a late review but I'm finally getting around to it. My wife and I celebrated our 1st year anniversary here (wife is from Charleston). The atmosphere, ambience and service was bar-none, the tops. Best I have ever experienced. Our waiters were attentive, professional, and personable. Couldn't have asked for better service. Sadly, however, our meals left much to be desired. I ordered the 22oz Prime Ribeye, medium rare. It came to me medium well (now I'm not the picky type, I'm a carnivore, so any dead animal in front of me regardless how it's cooked I'll eat it, I just won't be as happy if it isn't cooked medium rare). Shockingly there was absolutely no flavor to the cut. It was also wicked over salted. For the price I paid, I would expect it to be cooked to the exact specifications as ordered and more importantly be a flavorful cut and quality cut of beef. It absolutely was not remotely worth the price I paid for. The mushrooms placed atop were seasoned very well, but not enough to add any added flavor to the ribeye. They did have a pesto side to go with it, but was not impressed, and honestly was too little too late. My wife ordered the Sea bass which was very dry and the seasoning decent. I will say the potato gratin was fabulous. Superb cheese blend and perfectly cooked. Our appetizers were par, the crab cake was ok and the tuna was not fresh at all (being from New England I'm a seafood snob to begin with). However, the flourless chocolate cake was by far, the best dessert we have ever had! Not too sweet not too bitter, it was perfect. Both my wife and I could live off of that if we could. Overall the experience was great. Even though the food was disappointing (besides the potato gratin and flourless chocolate cake) that night, this will not stop us from coming back again. Granted it was my first time going, my wife's 3rd, I am not the one to knock and never return just because it was an ok experience (food wise). I like to give a place a few chances before saying "I'm coming here again going forward" or "Don't waste your time/money". Every place has an off night. I do recommend this place and look forward to trying it again.
(3)Esther K.
My husband and I celebrated our anniversary dinner here, and we both agreed that it ranks among the top 10 restaurants in America. The service and ambience was impeccable, and the food was perfect. We had the 6 course tasting, and it was exquisite. The jazz band and gracious host completed a memorable dinner
(5)Kevin R.
Absolutely fantastic food and wine, ambiance is above average but not great, service is amazing! It's pricey but save up for this one and you'll be glad you did!
(5)C O.
Wonderful dining experience! This is a very classy place with exceptional service. My husband had the tenderloin and I had the flounder with shrimp and grits. They were both delicious and prepared perfectly. The slight crispness of the tenderly sautéed flounder was really good and the flavor of the flounder with the shrimp and grits was like heaven! My husband's steak was amazingly tender and very flavorful. The live jazz was delightful - just the right volume so it stayed in the background while adding a very nice touch to the already classy ambiance. To top it off, the Cosmopolitan I had was perfectly prepared and they had a very nice selection of wines including half-bottle sizes. All in all, it was one of our better dining experiences in recent memory and we give it a whole-hearted 2 thumbs up.

We went her for Valentine's Day because I wanted to do something big. We were not disappointed. This might be the finest dining I've ever experienced. Atmosphere- Once we finally found the restaurant (inside the Charleston Place Hotel building), we walked into one of the best atmospheres we've experienced in Charleston. Had a very high class feel to it. I almost felt out of place without a jacket on, but fortunately there were others with just dress shirts as well. But I did see the occasional tuxedo... Live piano music played in the background but at just the right decibel. Top notch. Service- We were treated very well. We don't pamper ourselves like this much, and I am sure the waitress got that vibe from us. But she was very nice and attentive. We had a bit of a wait in between the initial sit down and the wine request, but after that everything was spot on. We were even visited by the manager (Mick?). We had a substantial conversation, which impressed me because I'm sure he was busy. Talking to him made us feel like home, and I really appreciated it. Food- If you didn't notice, this place is pricey. Be prepared to spend, but don't be prepared to be disappointed. The menu is split into 4 sections- Cosmopolitan (exotic), pure (simpler ingredients), southern, and lush (french-inspired). The vast array of options on the menu was a bit overwhelming so we went with the waitresses picks (filet and thai fish). Both were delicious! We had crab cakes for an appetizer and they were amazing! The neat part was that we declined dessert but they brought out some small treats anyway. Quite thoughtful of them. Overall- So far, only FIG has impressed us this much. If we could afford it, Charleston Grill might be a regular visit for us. While the food was expensive, we felt the quality and creativity deserved the price tag. The visit from the manager was a nice treat as well. i highly recommend it.

We chose this place for both menu and jazz music. There was a birthday to be celebrated and we splurged. There is a warmth and graciousness in this environment, reflected in the initial greeting as well as the service we received from Myka and Erin. Myka knew how to match wines with foods and she demonstrated a desire to make sure everything was "just so" for the birthday person. We were seated right by the jazz trio, and were waited on for several hours. I am Vegetarian and had no problem making choices from their quadruple menu. Everything we ordered was delicious and attractive.

First of all let me start off by saying that I'd stay at The Charleston Place Hotel even if they didn't have one of the best restaurants in Charleston. The Charleston Grill is exceptional, that's right I'm using my big girl words, exceptional. This is Charleston as its best. White table cloth dining, a three piece jazz band, superior service & oh yes let us not forget, most importantly, the food. Thankfully I dined with other foodies that had no problem with what I like to call, "Taste, Taste, Pass" that's right. Sharing is caring. We started with Crab cakes. Lobster was had. Lamb Chops were had. Dessert was had. The best thing about my dining experience is that at the end of the night all I had to do was push the button on the elevator. Nighty night! -Maria Taylor "What's new In New York"

Tonight was amazing. My mother and I are in town on a spur of the moment New Years trip so that we got reservations was lucky. We started with the seared foie gras and the crab cake. I had foie gras; it was prefect. It came from the lush menu and there really isn't a better description. It was lushious and extravagant and delicious. The apple pie paired with it complemented and enhanced it but the kicker was cinnamon mascarpone creme fraiche. The crab cake as far as I could tell was entirely comprised of a large pieces of fresh crab, no filler and the lime vinegrette was the prefect tart to sweet of the crab meat. We shared the beef tenderlion since my mom had recently had stomach surgery and couldn't eat a whole entree on her own. Not only did they split the entree they cooked the meat to two different temps. The meat was so tender it melted in the mouth. This care by the staff was seen in everything they did. My mom said it best"you felt cared for." Their staff's seemingly shared goal was to ensure that your meal was as enjoyable as possible. They were attentive without being intrusive. Dessert was the carrot cake fritters and a glass of the recommended dessert wine. The sweet raisin flavors of the wine and the carrot fritters, all I can say is that they weren't wrong.

Charleston Grill did a touchingly beautiful dinner for the two of us for our anniversary. Everyone was gracious and welcoming, the meal was exquisitely prepared (Chef Michelle Weaver is absolutely gifted at her art), seating was suitably private and service was perfect. The champagne suggested was a wonderful start to dinner, went perfectly with the crab cakes (which were better than in Baltimore) and the wine suggested paired wonderfully with beef tenderloin and the duck entree. The jazz group playing for dinner was just the right volume for conversation. Dessert included a "Happy Anniversary" chocolate dish. This is definitely fine dining for special occasions. Each dish was just right. For this glamorous dinner including generous alcohol and dessert we spent about $350.00. Worth every cent. We plan to be back soon.
(5)Dan D.
Excellent fine dining establishment. The food was great, they greeted us and referred to us by name, which was a nice touch. They have an extensive wine menu, and they seem to really cater to special occasions:anniversaries and the like. The menu is broken up into four different sections which was described to us by the waitress as being able to dine at four unique restaurants as each section was a different style of cooking. The crab cake was in a butter lemon sauce which was excellent, and the duck was great as well. My wife had the flounder, shrimp and grits, which was also excellent. She thought the golden crust on the fish was a little too salty, but I thought it was just right. Regardless of that the fish was great. I also recommend the "Bittersweet Pecan Mousse" dessert. It tasted as good as it looked. If you are looking for a great night out, don't hesitate to try Charleston Grill.

This place is amazing! Everything we ordered was excellent, and they have the most amazing Foie Gras! We also loved the service here!

This was by far the most amazing food experience I've ever had!! We visited on a Friday night and made reservations on Open Table, requesting a window seat and seating away from the band. We mentioned that we were celebrating our anniversary. The restaurant staff was amazing and accommodated all of our requests upon arrival. Our server took the time to personally wish us a happy anniversary, make recommendations on menu and greeted us with a card wishing us a happy anniversary as well!! We also received a complimentary dessert plate inscribed with happy anniversary, which was a nice touch! The manager even came over to our table to welcome us as well! The food was amazing and definitely the star of the show!! I enjoyed every bite of the seared flounder and my lady had the sea scallops. We were both very pleased with the presentation of the food and the taste! The staff was on it from refilling our water, offering bread and clearing the plates from the table in a timely manner. This was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The band was really a nice touch and a great compliment to a wonderful dinner. The music was not too loud and you could still have a conversation with your table while they played. definitely treat yourself and experience what five star dining is all about!!

This dinner now stands out as my all-time favorite from a total experience standpoint. The staff are outstanding. In a time where service seems secondary to most businesses, Charleston Grill staff work together as a seamless team to give customers a catered-to and impeccable experience. Mickey Bakst, Andrew and the rest of the staff (forgive me for not getting names) made this unforgettable. The food is difficult to put into words. Crab cakes - divine with bright and clear flavors. I had the rack of lamb and this dish was, in a word, exquisite. Simple components executed superbly. I have NEVER had lamb prepared so skillfully. So good, I had to sacrifice manners and picked it up like a lollipop to make sure I ate every last fragment of succulent goodness. Thankfully I did stop short of licking the plate (tempting, believe me!). Get staff recommendations as they know this food well. On the advice of one of the waitstaff (I'm sorry I did note get his name) desert was decadent cinnamon buns; piping hot with an icy apple cider granita. Hot and cold in one beautiful mouthful. Wonderful touches of palate prepping mouthfuls from the chefs before dinner and desert. You might think this review is excessively effusive, but just look at their overall ratings. There is a reason they are rated so well. This will be my permanent dinner destination for all future Charleston visits.

Such a great experience. The chef is excellent. Nothing overpowering let's the flavor of the food shine through. I had the venison with fois gras which was excellent. The pork chop that my friend had was excellent especially the sauce. The wine selection was very unique and dessert profiteroles were divine. They were knowledgeable about gluten free foods and options and made my wife feel at ease immediately. Andrew, our server and Femie were great! Would come back here in a heartbeat and would definitely recommend. Live music really added to the wonderful ambiance.

The Charleston Grill is a favorite of mine as well as a countless number of many other Charlestonians. It is probably the best restaurant in Charleston and maybe even the south. The first and second visit were both equally amazing, everyone was so hospitable, and the staff was extremely attentive and friendly. As soon as we were seated the details like, the napkins placed on our laps by the servers and the consistent refilling of our glasses, were appreciated and gave an elegant and sophisticated touch to the atmosphere. The servers, as well as having warm personalities, were extremely educated and knowledgeable in the menu, wine pairings, and food. All of us got the chefs tasting course in both of our visits there and never regretted it. Our courses which were compiled of their famous crab cakes, foie gras, filet mignon and much more were spectacular and divine. Everything there all molded together to give a formal feel and the manager as well as servers repeatedly came back to ensure everything was perfect. The chef of the night Miss Michelle Weaver, was unfortunately out on both nights so we didn't meet her but hopefully our next visit (In the near and distant future) will lead to getting to know the mastermind behind all of the food that always had a slight feminine touch to itself. You just cannot get any better southern/contemporary food in Charleston than from the Charleston Grill.

Many people complain about the pricey menu. Well, you get what you pay for here. Outstanding dinner with Chef Michelle's special menu surprises. Highly recommend for special occasions. Been in Charleston 22 yrs, and this is top 5 dining experiences. Fabulous.

It lived up to the hype. Friendly greeting at the door and then brought to a fabulous table right next to the jazz quartet. The service was non pretentious, friendly, non intrusive and attentive. The food was just perfection. Everything from the seared Fois gras, beet salad, lobster and pappardelle with a brown butter sauce and the beef tenderloin were cooked to perfection. My beef was by far the best I have ever had and I have enjoyed many great steaks. Our desserts were fun and decadent. I cannot say enough about the Charleston Grill. Sadly, we are just visiting so it may be a while before we get to experience this again.
(5)Emily M.
The Charleston Grill exceeded our expectations with the exquisite menu and exceptional service. The jazz band was delightful. We were seated in the most romantic, curved booth overlooking the courtyard. Definitely the best meal while we were in Charleston!

Femi is the best waiter ever! His recommendation of the crab cake was amazing...great night, great services and food!

Holy.Moly. This place is so good. Never had a bad meal here. I love the setting and the service is great to match the food. Solid.

Two words we all love to hear at the bar, "warm nuts". I'm not talking your average peanut and pretzel mix. I'm talking huge cashews, jumbo brazilians, gorgeous pecans, and whole, unbroken walnuts - this is fancy stuff, Peeps! Two more words I love, "Live Jazz", and this place has it. A quartet - lovely to accompany my drink, an Old Fashioned (with Whiskey, of course). What a perfect start to an evening. The Charleston Grill provided an experience that just might possibly be the BEST dining experience of my life. Charming, fine, lovely service, and AMAZING food. They feature an extensive wine list, beautiful furnishings, the lighting is perfect, and service is super pro and not stuffy whatsoever. I had a little of everything...from an appetizer, soup, main course, and dessert...all were beautifully prepared and served, truly, better could not be had. This place is quite expensive, so don't think of it as the replacement for Applebee's. Instead, save this for the most special of your occasions, or when you have a generous reimbursement policy when traveling on business! Perhaps, your Sugar Mama could take you. How did I pay for all of this? I'll never tell. The soup de jour was a Chilled Gazpacho. A nice size bowl was placed before me. Inside, diced chives atop a dollop of crème fraiche. My heart sunk. My eyes could pierce Ironman's suit. And, just before I could shout the words "You've got to be kidding, this is what you call soup?" over my right shoulder, the server had a medium-sized pitcher that was gently poured into the bowl. It was marvelous, and I felt foolish. The soup was gobbled, swashed about, and sopped up quickly. The bowl shined by my tongue. Perhaps the use of "warm nuts" and "tenderloin" is beyond the focus of this review, but in my case, it's not. I ordered the Prime Beef Tenderloin, which was taking a jacuzzi in a warm Bourguignon Sauce, and joined by a huge Baked Potato. This was supreme, eyes rolling back, took me to another place kind of steak. So tender. For dessert, Classic Crème Brûlée (a French Custard, made with the real deal Tahitian Vanilla Beans) -- perfection! Not eggy, just enough caramelized sugar atop. I shared, but reluctantly. Following the most enjoyable dinner was an evening walk down King Street. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!

My mother, sister and I went to Charleston Grill for dinner on our last night in the city. We can't say enough about the delicious food, quality of service, and lovely atmosphere. The brussel sprouts are a must-try as a side dish and the crab cake, which they said is their signature dish, is divine. I don't think you could go wrong with anything on the menu, however. We lingered for almost 3 hours and our waiter, Chip, was fantastic. We even got some free tastes of Moscato and an assortment of desserts. Sunday nights they have live music and it added to the whole ambiance. Definitely not to miss if in Charleston!

Hands down, best food and chef in Charleston! I LOVE this place. Chef Bob is so talented, Micky is always charming, the service is impecable, and the food is always excellent. I've had many memorable evenings here!
(5)Eric S.
Great Date night type of place. Even though it's located inside of a "mall like" area, you get transported into another world. The service and staff were fantastic. The food selection is large for such a fine dining restaurant. There is something for everybody here. Fish, meat, game birds, salads. It's all amazing. Make sure you have enough room on your credit card. 2 people with one glass of wine was around $200 The Music was 3 piece jazz band, their playing was superb, however they seemed to play 2-3 verses and then stop and leave for a 15 minute break and then come back to play for 15 minutes. Certainly it was because not many people were tipping and it was a Monday evening, but a little more consistency would have been appreciated.
(4)Dan O.
The Charleston Grill provides what I believe is the best, most high end service in Charleston. The service is consistently great every time. The food is great, but as many times as I've eaten there, nothing sticks out as a dish you "have to try because it is amazing". As a result I'll have to stick to 4 out of 5.
(4)Michael B.
I could write details or I could tell you go and you wont be let down. If you like fancy food with a very sophisticated southern approach and amazing service this is your place. Its all good, I've done the tasting menu with wine paring and we've ordered off the menu. The food is down right fab. Sure you're gonna drop a bunch of dough in this place but every time I leave here I say that's one of the best meals I've ever had. This is in my top 5 restaurants in the US
(5)Capote S.
Phenomenal. Don't miss the lobster pappardelle. Very ingenious menu- four "categories" of food that you can mix and match as you want. Make sure Mickey stops by your table at some point. You won't be disappointed.
(5)Happy L.
Best meal and dining experience we have had in we can't remember when.OMG total skirt flipper. Service fantastic, approachable and well timed. The meal, orgasmic,as in yowzaa the bomb. Asparagus with poached egg and Iberia ham,bib lettuce salad, the butter poached lobster with fava beans. I am talking foodie fine dining heaven. Three scoops of straight to bra fat heaven ice cream and great French press coffee. Poifect in all respects, thinking the rest just maybe posers.
(5)Andrew H.
As always, amazing. Mickey is by far one of the best restaurant personalities I've ever known. He truly makes you feel at home, no matter how often you dine at the Grill. We chose to sit at the bar and listen to the live music. Taylor, the bartender, was informative, gracious, and perfectly attentive. Exceptional wine choices. Escargot, Octopus Salad, Crab Cake...all perfect. Crab cake was one of the best I'd had in a while. Escargot was earthy, rich, and delicious. Grilled artichoke hearts. Yeah, I'll be back for a triple order of these. Damn. Tomato Pie...almost as good as mom's. Sorry, mom, but it was close! And my wife's tenderloin of beef...freshly shaved horseradish really put the dish over the edge. Tender, flavorful, and again, perfect. Why don't we come here more often? Easily the best dining experience in Charleston. Thank you for making date night an almost perfect evening...I have to thank my wife for that.

We had dinner recently at Charleston Grill as part of Restaurant week in Charleston. We've been there at least 6 or 7 times before. It falls into the category of almost special occasion because of the cost, but its generally worth it. My partner and I both ordered the same entrees--Shrimp and Grits, a new version of the dish for CG since Southern Living included chef Michelle Weavers version of it in a recent issue along with some other southern chefs' versions. I would rate most of the food as excellent. The appetizer I had--carpaccio-was superb. Subtle flavorings of grilled mushroos with arugla + beef made a stunning introduction to dinner. My partner got the oyster po-boy salad which she like very much. We disagreed on the shrimp and grits, although not at first. The first few bites were very good, but somehow the dish did not hold up for me--texture and presentation was fine, the shrimp was of good quality, but the whole thing grew bland pretty quickly. The other half of the table loved it, so there you go. I'm used to SNOB's shrimp and grits which has a larger palette of flavors--tomatoes, green onions, chorizo, etc.-- whereas Weaver's is heavily focused on the Madeira, creamy grits and Benton bacon. Desert was creme brûlée, nicely done. One part of the Charleston Grill experience is getting to be a bit off-putting is the constant round of waiters and other staff coming up and asking you how everything is. Must have happened 10 times during the meal. Actually, it was more than 10 times. My partner and I were in conversation when we weren't eating, and I enjoy chatting a bit with waiters, and I'm grateful they're checking, but this was officially annoying by the end of the meal. Part of it might have been that we were eating early--about 6 and the restaurant was almost empty when we arrived. But still.....that doesn't excuse constant interruptions.

Love the menu concept here. Just pick your style of food and the choices within that category go well together. The wine paring choices are also very good. Chef Michelle pays a lot of attention to a great presentation of uncommon menu choices. Everything was delicious.

Best meal I have had in quite awhile! Service was outstanding. I had the Charleston Crab Cakes as an appetizer and the lobster for dinner. Excellent!! Others in my party has the rib eye steak, oysters, pork chop and all loved their meal. A definite return spot for me. Try it, you'll love it. As a plus, had a 4 piece band that was great to listen to while enjoying dinner.

So let me tell you about one cold February night in Charleston, where I proceeded to have one of the greatest dining experience of my life. Grab a glass of scotch (cause I already have one), make sure the fireplace is roaring, and come on in close - because the amazing part of the experience wasn't even the food. I came to Charleston by myself, which in and of itself was already weird. Charleston is a romantic getaway - a beachy paradise, full of strolling couples on honeymoons or weekend escapes and families enjoying the South Carolina coastline. And then...there was me. A 2nd year grad student whose friends all decided that they'd rather stay in Nashville. So knowing my time in the south was limited, I packed a bag, booked a flight, and came on out solo. The first night I dined by myself at Magnolia and despite a superb meal I had never felt lonelier. Dining is a communal activity. At its core it's dinner with family. At its best, it's a romantic dinner for two. But dining solo is a respite for business travelers; not people on vacation. So the next night I had a reservation at the Charleston Grill, and expected the experience to be the same. But life has a way of surprising us. I arrived and the maitre'd looked up from the counter and said, "Are you Mr. XXX?" Props for already recognizing me...although being one of only a few Asian people in Charleston probably makes it easier - haha. I nod, and he asks me if I'd prefer sitting at the bar since I am by myself. Now this is a smart restaurant manager. If you're dining solo, a booth or table is just lonely. But a bar seat...that's just common sense. You're among other people, plus the bartenders can interact with you. He seats me and instructs the two bartenders to take care of me, which they definitely did. Besides advising me on the cocktails (including a delightful Dark N Stormy) and the food, they made it their priority to introduce me to fellow guests so I wouldn't be so isolated. Over the course of the next three hours, I wound up meeting: * a woman who owned a poster shop just down the block and her friend from Europe who was touring the U.S. * a couple on a date who were clearly about to go do it * a couple from Nashville who owned a wine bar (which I later visited) and whom were on their way to Hilton Head for a few days * and a guy who was in town visiting his son, who happened to provide an amazing career opportunity for me. This last man was an interesting guy. Upon finding out where I was planning to work, he proceeded to tell me about this bank in California, and he suggested I work there. I actually knew it well, as a former customer, and I politely pointed out that I didn't know anybody there. He mentioned the name of the CEO, and again I pointed out that I'd heard of the man but didn't know him. He slyly smiled at me, handed me his card, and said, "You call me. I know the CEO." It turns out he was the head of a publishing company in town for a board meeting, and in the weeks after I followed up with him, got connected through the CEO of the bank and wound up meeting one of the highest ranking members of the bank's executive team. And all of this happened because I went to the Charleston Grill. Oh, I failed to mention the sleek and relaxing music being played in the background, the gorgeous dark interior, and the fact that when my meal was done, both of the bartenders made of point of saying thank you and wished me well in my travels. And the maitre'd made sure my meal experience went well - which it certainly did. So here I am nine months after this happened, and I just recalled the details of this night onto Yelp for the first time. Why are all the details so vivid? Maybe it was just that epic of a night, filled with more stories than one typically gets in a year's worth of dinners. Or maybe the Charleston Grill is just the kind of place where these nights are the norm.

Most delicious veal chop I've ever had. Entire meal was outstanding and incredible. There's nothing more I could have asked for!

Nice restaurant.... Good food but a little bit on the expensive side

Ok, downtown Charleston is obvi a foodie town so, I was less than thrilled when my husband had made resies at CG- because it is connected to a hotel & I thought we'd get a stuffy, odd, hotel restaurant w/mediocre food. I was so wrong!! The staff is incredibly knowledgeable about all the food and they were so nice. If you have the time you MUST do the Chet's tasting. It takes about three hours (which we loved because there are so many tastings and they give you just the right amount of time to eat and digest before moving onto the next tasting). We were able to request things off the menu that we wanted to try! AND, the portions are very nice. We were so full by the end. This was one of the best and most memorable dining experiences we have ever had. After each tasting we would look at each other and exclaim that it was "the best food we've ever eaten." And we've been around ;)
(5)Oswaldo C.
Went there for lunch with family while visiting the city. The service and food were very nice, but not exceptional . The best thing about our experience was our waitress Lauren who made it the experience more memorable .
(3)Greg T.
Both the service and the food was beyond expectation. Absolutely perfect on a very important night.
(5)Paul H.
Food was great as usual. This is a staple for us when in Town. On this occasion, we decided to order room service instead of going to the restaurant since the dinner room service is from the grill anyway. The lobster was perfect. Wasn't overlooked due to travel time most places the lobster becomes over cooked. Everything was seasoned perfectly. I love the foie gras here.
(5)Mark K.
The steak melts in your mouth, literally in all sense of the word! In my precious encounters of such expression at other steak houses I thought it was just an expression, but this place has put a meaning into the phrase. Get the steak - you won't regret it. The potato side is also excellent.
(5)C J.
Had a really good meal here with great service. I had the foie which was delectable albeit small. I then had the shrimp & flounder over grits (wanted to stay with a regional dish ) and it was great. They had a small jazz band which added a great sound to the restaurant.

The best restaurant in South Carolina, and in the top ten in the US, no bones about it. The entire menu was amazingly versatile and tasty. The two separate nights my family ate here, we had a lot of the dishes that were on the menu between the four of us, and we were able to taste each other's - and honestly, nothing was bad. My sister's rabbit was the best I've ever had, the duck almost as good as neighboring restaurant Peninsula Grill, and the venison lacked the gamey nastiness that usually accompanies venison at other restaurants I've been to. Highest recommendation.
(5)Andrew C.
Always a special treat, from start to finish...first we are greeted with one of the most amazing personalities to oversee a dining room, Mickey Bakst and two attentive/personable hostess's. Upon final confirmation that our entire party had arrived we were sat and commented instantly on the beautiful lighting [all seated are professional artists] with glasses of Duval-Leroy Champagne to follow us. WOWZA the food, broken into four genre's [each recognizing a theme without detracting from what I considered a classical french core]...the Opa Ceviche and Escargot to start....AMAZING [one light, the other rich, both perfectly balanced!]. The wine pairings [and ya'll this spot has one of the most beautiful lists in Charleston] were spot on...either complimenting or contrasting our food brilliantly. The staff was ever ready without a hint of being overbearing. As the meal progressed tastes came out from the kitchen [full disclosure; michelle {head chef} was away on vacation and honestly I would not have thought for one moment her hands had not something to do with our dishes...awesome...truly the mark of a great kitchen in my book] and our entrees were spot on. Cappucinos and icewine closed the meal and in my opinion another notch was made on my top ten restaurants I have ever eaten at was created. RECOMMEND. One thing this is a bit pricey [all the attention does come at a price] and yet if you are looking for that special treat or are a serious foodie, check the grill out!
(5)Julia M.
The Charleston Grill is a bit on the pricey side, but it is very classy and elegant. It is not normally my first choice while I am in town, but for a special occasion, it is a nice splurge. The service is good, but not stuffy. The food and wine pairings are wonderful here!
(4)Don C.
We loved our experience at the Charleston Grill! We just celebrated our 11th anniversary with an amazing 6 course wine pairing. Each course was delicious. The wines were perfectly matched. The service was impeccable and the live jazz added a nice romantic touch. Chef Michelle deserves the rave reviews she has earned and we look forward to our next experience at the Charleston Grill.
(5)Annie S.
Golden. Went here to celebrate Mother's day as well as brother's graduation, so in addition to our amazing meal, they surprised us at the end with some dessert and moscato. YUM. moscato. They serve up a mix of French, Southern, and American options, which were all palette-pleasers. However, I will say that the bill can break the bank a bit...but we've all got to give in sometimes.

Great ingredients - just not assembled quite right. Being from the land of Disney World I am use to great chefs that have great recipes that end up being executed by folks that have not been properly trained. Several years ago I attended a cooking class with Chef Waggoner (former owner of Charleston Grill). He was absolutely amazing and the food was incredible. Unfortunately, tonight there was nothing special about the food.
(2)Jie S.
Hubster and I went for our anniversary. Everything about our dining experience there was amazing. When we walked in, the hostess greeted us, showed us to our table (very cozy) and gave us a "Happy Anniversary" card, from Charleston Grill. Our server was friendly, and anytime there's live jazz, I'm happy. I love jazz. I love live music. Enough said. Onto the food. I had the Grilled Peach Salad and my husband at the Antipasto Salad. Both were absolutely amazing - and the serving size was huge! For the main course, I had Lacquered Duck Breast and he had the Thai Fish. To this day, we still go back and forth on which one was better, but you really can't go wrong with either. Both are to die for. Overall, one of the best dining experiences we've had since moving to Charleston. We thought the price was more than fair too, at least compared to restaurants of the same calibre in other cities we've been to.
(5)Michelle L.
Went here for our anniversary last night, it was amazing! They were everything by the book for a shmancy restaurant. I know the guy below complained about the little tiny portions of free food, but they have that at almost all fancy restaurants I have ever been to, it is a staple almost. I had the beef tenderloin and it was perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked! (You know sometimes nice places don't season their meat enough?....this was PERFECT!) It was a very classy joint, and they were SO sweet for our anniversary, they brought us some delicious desserts, and almost everyone working there stopped by to say congratulations. If I could afford the $200 bill, we'd come here all the time!
(5)Robert P.
Great jazz, wine and a fantastic Madeira selection. Food is good and pricey. Go for drinks, jazz and desert.
(4)Jeff R.
The Charleston Grill was one of the best dining experiences I have had in a long time. The ambiance, jazz, food and service were all outstanding. The menu is unique with four different categories of food. From unique to traditional to classic southern fare, there is something for everyone, Nathan was our server and although I am rarely steered away from my first option, but he suggested the Colorado double cut lamb chops and I was not disappointed. The prepartion of the foie gras was one of the more unique offerings and well worth the caloric splurge. Considering the place has a pricey feel and some of the entrees are above $25, the trade-off in quality ingredients and good service far outweigh this perception. The one negative, if there was one, is that we went back the next night to hear some jazz in the lounge. The service in the lounge was not up to par with respect to equitable wine pours. This too was offset by Nathan spotting my wife and I in the bar and coming over to greet us again. We will definitely go back to CG and highly recommend this place for special occasions or just for a great meal.
(5)Rodney D.
Great ambiance, but a little stuffy. Foie Gras melted like butter in my mouth. My wife's Frogmore Stew was tasty, but it could barely feed a 4th grader. They need a fat folks menu! After we ate dinner and we were taking pictures in the mall. out waiter took pictures of my wife and I while he was off the clock. Great Service!
(4)Android I.
Bottom line: great food, VERY EXPENSIVE, great service, great music, but you have to be into extremely expensive dining to enjoy this probably. I would have been just as happy at Taco Mac. $200+ bill for two people - in case you want to know how expensive it is. Meat was not cooked to temperature (ordered medium well, received medium). At one point our waitress brought us a "salad" which was literally 1 ounce of sliced fruit in a thimble. Another point, cheesecake came out and it would have fit in a thimble. Soup came out in a large spoon - seriously. These were single mouthful samples. We laughed hysterically when our carefully trained waitress was not around at the small portions - but these were between course gratuities - not the actual things we ordered. Our portions were healthy enough and we were full nearing the end of the meal. The table we had was romantic on the side of the room side by side looking out at the room. Very nice for people watching and enjoying each other's company. The music was a guitar player who was very friendly. We enjoyed chatting with him between sets. He was very skilled and played some great numbers.
(3)Terri S.
This is a very pricey, upscale dining experience. We were impressed with the food. I had the lamb chops which were probably the best I ever had. My husband had a seafood stew type thing which was also very good. We rarely order dessert but we splurged and were happy we did. In addition to the lovely complimentary amuse-bouche, and the cookies you are given as a departing gift, our server apparently had some lattitude when it came to the alcohol. When she poured my glass of wine and there was not enough left in the bottle for another full glass, she left the bottle on the table for me to finish. And my husband ordered a grappa of which there was hardly any left so they poured what was in the bottle and didn't charge for it. There was a jazz quartet and as jazz fans we asked to sit near the music. This request was accommodated and the music in the background was pleasant. Now for the annoying part. The reservation was in my name, Terri "Smith" (not my real last name but you'll get the point). They immediately assumed the man with me was my husband (which was true but that was a BIG assumption on their part....) and immediately began to address him as Mr. "Smith". However, his last name and mine are different. We smiled the first couple of times but our server addressed him this way so many times that my husband finally said "My name is Ed". And, our server was very intrusive. Perhaps in an effort to provide great service she overdid it and was really annoying.
(4)Laura F.
We ate here for NYE. The food was excellent, especially the venison, filet, carrot risotto, and roasted cauliflower. The atmosphere and jazz music was very nice and swanky. A nice evening indeed.
(4)Chris R.
WOW WOW WOW Fantasic service, wine list, and of course food. I had the poached lobster, and while my better half was recovering from Jaw surgery, they went out of their wait to prepare a meal that would be easy for her to gum down that was off the menu. I cannot wait to return!
(5)Joe M.
Charleston Grill has been near the top of my list for local restaurants I wanted to try for some time. Their website touts Charleston Grill as the "top restaurant in Charleston, South Carolina" and even locals rave about the place as a fine dining mecca. Thanks to Charleston Restaurant Week I was finally able to see what all the fuss was about. The atmosphere at Charleston Grill is amazing. The dining area is upscale without feeling "stuffy" or "pretentious." Wonderful, live jazz is the soundtrack to your meal and everyone (from the hostess to the servers) was friendly, helpful and great. While all of those things are a big part of a dining experience, for me it's always more about the food. Dinner started very well with the arrival of the evening's amuse-bouche. The chef prepared an incredibly tasty Roasted, Golden Beet with Goat Cheese Mousse. The little, perfectly roasted bite packed a punch with flavor, initially spicy and giving way to incredible sweetness. It was so good I wished a larger version had been available for the first course. Next up was a Chilled Heirloom Tomato Soup with Goat Cheese Crouton and Basil. What could have been a great dish was a disappointment. The soup really needed heavy cream or something else to cut the acidity. The goat cheese covered crostini helped but was gone in four bites, leaving me with half a bowl of the overly acidic and peppery soup. The timing in the kitchen was really off here because it took an eternity for the main course to arrive. I had the Lowcountry Catfish Stew with Anson Mills Rice Grits, Basil and Lemon. Besides the amuse-bouche, this was the best thing I had to eat at Charleston Grill. The catfish was tender, vegetables were fresh and the broth was well flavored. The portion size was also impressive, which could not be said for my dinner companions' choice of the Prime Beef Tenderloin with Asparagus and Mashed Potatoes. My final course was the Bittersweet Chocolate Mousse with Peanut Butter, Strawberry Jam and Peanut Brittle. When I think of mousse, I imagine something airy and velvety in texture. What I received was something dense and flan like. The flavors did come together when all the ingredients were eaten at once but I was left longing for the alternate choice of a Poppy Seed Pound Cake with Lemon Curd, Crème Fraîche and Berries instead. Dessert was slightly saved with some of the best coffee I've ever had at a restaurant though. If restaurant week is an audition for establishments to show what they're all about and to leave you wanting to come back for more, Charleston Grill missed the mark. Some of the dishes were good but when my bill for two is over $170.00 (including dinner, wine and gratuity) the meal needs to have been great. To a person, none of my party felt their dinner was memorable or that another trip to Charleston Grill was in order. If you're only looking for a nice, upscale bar and lounge area to order some great wine and listen to live jazz, I can recommend Charleston Grill. If you're looking for truly great food, Charleston, South Carolina has much better options on and off the peninsula.

Ate here about 10 years ago it was very impressed. Couldn't wait to get back. Last night I had the opportunity to do it again and I wasn't disappointed. Sat at the bar since I was by myself. Bartender made me An excellent Martini and furnished me with a sampler that was outstanding. I was undecided as to what to order. I asked the bartender what was good. She suggested a red meat but I was in the mood for seafood so I took her suggestion for the Thai fish. Outstanding! Rare combination of ingredients. The spices were just right and the broth was out of this world. Not inexpensive, my meal was about $80 including two martinis plus a tip, but I was very satisfied. Highly recommend it.
(5)LovetoBfit ..
Fantastic! Especially if celebrating a special occasion like an engagement. Staff went out of their way to make us feel special. And food was absolutely delicious. Pork chop was best we've ever had. They make a fantastic mojito too! Highly recommend.
(5)Max G.
Impeccable service. The Thai grouper I had was wonderful. It was sweet and spicy. The crab cake appetizer was easily the best crab cake I have ever eaten.
(5)Nicole P.
Although I haven't gone to eat dinner there yet, I've been there on more than one occasion to watch their live music, which is fantastic. The service was fine, but the atmosphere is extremely "schmoozy". I don't mind being there, but I don't necessarily know if I could make a habit out of $16 cocktails.. although the musicians there do make it worthwhile. I'm hoping that I get a chance to eat dinner there soon; that's really what anyone should ever be doing there. ****UPDATE from 01/17/11 Woo, thank you Restaurant Week for your existence! I went here with a friend for their 3 for 30 deal last weekend-- they were fully booked that night, so we sat at the bar. It was great! As always, great music. The drinks were still obviously at New York prices. BUT the service was great (Taylor, I think his name was, is great! Very likable and detail-oriented.. We never had to ask for anything! Who knew they hired people with telepathic abilities...) and the food was amazing. Their red pea soup and veal cheeks were so much better than I could've imagined. I had their chocolate pots de créme with coconut and caramel, which was much richer than I was initially giving it credit for and probably shouldve gone for their lemon custard, which was really good (yep, stole a bite from my friend). Have I honestly gone all my life without having had eaten here? Well, all is well with the world now.

The Charleston Grill has a wonderful dining room, beautifully appointed and comfortable with an extremely high level of service. The night we were there (on a weekend), there was a small jazz band playing which added to the beautiful atmosphere. The menu is inspired and represents cosmopolitan options as well as local cuisine. Everything was cooked perfectly and presented beautifully. The only reason that I cannot give this rating a "5" is because the prices were extremely high. We had meals nearly as good for less than half the price, so I would have to say that it wasn't a good value for the price.

Loved the food, loved the ambiance! I had the sturgeon in curry sauce with a side of cauliflower - assume! I highly recommend this restaurant (pricey though).

This was probably one of the best dining experiences my husband and I have ever had. It was definitely on the pricey side, but well worth it. The ambiance, the decor, and most especially the food were exceptional. We had the tuna carpaccio appetizer and for entrees, my husband had the butter poached lobster and I had the duck. My duck was perfectly cooked and his lobster was divine. Everything was seasoned perfectly and every bite left me wanting more. We also shared a side of potato gratin which was cheesy and yummy! The best part was the dessert. We had the butter pecan mousse, and both my husband and I agree this was maybe the best dessert we have ever had (and we eat out a lot!. The mousse came with a coconut sorbet and a dulce de leche sauce and it was phenomenal! For drinks, I had their lemongrass mojito and the perro salado, both of which were very nice, and my husband had a pinot noire (the restaurant has a very impressive wine and liquor list). And I have to mention their amazing bread basket - fresh baked multigrain bed, sour dough rolls and mini corn muffins, all for the taking :) If I had one criticism to make, it would be that our server seemed a little overwhelmed with tables and our food was backed up, but it was definitely, definitely worth the wait. All in all, it was a wonderful way to celebrate our 6 year wedding anniversary in sophistication, and style and with impeccable food and warm service.

I have eaten here on multiple occasions. Always top notch in terms of service. The food is superb and there is a variety of options from low country to cosmopolitan. The desserts are a particular treat - I am never disappointed. Also benefits from having one of the best and most personable managers in North America - Mickey Bakst. He makes the meal even more special because of his interaction with you during the meal. Expensive but well worth it!

Stayed at Charleston Place July 9-12 and saved eating at the Charleston Grill for our last night. The food was very good, as we have come to expect in Charleston, however the price was above what is reasonable considering the fine dining within only a few blocks away. Glad we ate there, but will explore the many other options in the future.

A wonderful, classy place in a wonderful location. The food was very good. My wife had a place of steak medallions (I don't recall what it was called). She says it is the best steak meal she has ever had (Ruth's Chris was her previous favorite). I started out with the Sashimi salad which was quite tasty. I then took a gamble and tried the sturgeon in curry sauce. The curry was good though it lacked the spicy flavor of a traditional curry (to be expected of a haut cuisine but my philosophy is that is always better to refine a dish than "re-interpret" it). The sturgeon itself was very tasty but it was rather tough. Since I have never had sturgeon before I'll give the chef the benefit of the doubt. Still I was quite pleased. BTW, I take a bit of exception people listing this as "$$$" in terms of price. Though I guess it's theoretically possible to get out of there for less than $60 per person I challenge you to do so.

Mickey might be one of the kindest, generous gentleman my husband and I have ever come across. We wed in Charleston and had dinner reservations at the Charleston Grill for our reception. Our dinner reservations got slightly goofed (which wasn't that big of a deal, we had a large party and the restaurant is fairly small), Mickey (the GM) immediately called me to inform me they couldn't accommodate that many people at one table, but was more than happy to make other arrangements for us. He called another very nice restaurant in the area, High Cotton, (which we had called beforehand and they said they were completely booked), made all of our reservations for us and said to make sure my husband and I came to Charleston Grill the following night, for a private special dinner, complimentary of the restaurant for our "grief", and mishap on the reservations. Besides the food being out of this world, we got to enjoy things at Charleston Grill we more than likely wouldn't have got to with having such a large dinner party. Our service was beyond excellent, our food was delicious and everything and everyone there made out first night as a married couple magical. All Mickey asked of us was the "pay it forward" and make sure if we have the opportunity to do something extraordinary for someone else, to do it. Also to have a perfect life together. :)

Update: I received a note from the restaurant's manager via Yelp, who seemed sincerely apologetic about this issue. I have added an additional star because of their responsiveness.

Ok, let's move from downstairs, good jazz, horrible service, 25% chance of getting a decent meal, to having a lunch upstairs, outside, at the Spa. So for the tiny, miniscule, sum of $250 a month you can join the spa where you have a small gym, an ok pool, a steam, sauna, and some snotty little blondes at a desk who having attained the pinnacle of success--answering phones and booking pedicures--look down their noses at the guests. I signed up--do they review therapists here? Because obviously I am in need. So out on the patio with a menu, mmm tuna nicoise? That makes sense! Or it should have. I swear I stared at the plate for a while trying to figure it out. First off, they were riffing off some idea of making a sandwich, or rather two. But the bread was black. My mom used to do that and we'd go over to the sink and scrape the black stuff off with a knife. There are some small greens on the bread, what looks like a swipe of mayo on the bread, and two pieces of tuna. But to make an actual sandwich---some burnt bread is missing to do this. hmmm. mystery. I swear I looked at that plate like my dog watches tv sometimes---head cocking from side to side--what strange juju is happening here? There is a skewer with a two tomatoes on it. Ah ha! I think, they are going for a deconstructed tuna sandwich? No capers, no caper berries, no dressing, no nothing you would associate with tuna nicoise. But let's get to the tuna. There are two pieces. One is half an inch thick and cooked all the way through. Well done would be one way to say it, but destroyed would be more accurate. The other, is an inch and a half, rare. I guess they couldn't make up their minds. The server, thank god, was french, and I asked, hey, what is this? "nothing I can really recognize as tuna nicoise" was the answer, "And that bread is burnt!" I'm just saying, I had backup here. Can I have two beers and just forget this happened?

Talk about top notch food and service! I can't wait to go back the next time I'm in Charleston. My mom and I treated ourselves to a super dinner here. She had the succulent and perfectly cooked lobster for her main course and I had the tender and sweet scallops for mine. We both had the crispy shrimp for our appetizers. Everything was scrumptiliumptious. It was refreshing to have to have so many appetizers and entrees to choose from, since most fine dining restaurants, even the ones in nyc, have only a few dining options. The decor and ambience is intimate--geared toward couples, but some families were there. I left off a star because the place isn't the easiest to find. It's in some sort of shopping center. Also, the host/manager was a bit annoying as he went around the room asking each table how everything was. Ordinarily, I would have thought he was just trying to do a good job, but something about him was inappropriate and unpleasant. All in all, we enjoyed it and will be returning.

While visiting Charleston on business (a chef's convention), 5 of us went to the Charleston Grill for dinner. I know at least 2 of us were disappointed with the needless fancy-schmancy presentations and frankly, odd combinations of ingredients. In addition, every single thing we ate was over-salted, to the extent that when someone asked me what the main flavor of my dish was, I paused, thought, and said "Salt." Desserts looked yummy; I didn't have any but 2 others did. I'd say skip this place and go to Magnolia's or Anson's.

I have absolutely never had anything bad here. I've eaten here so many times that I can't even list everything I've eaten since the menu changes almost every week. Scallops and lobster risotto comes back every Fall. If you see it, get it. The scallops melt in your mouth and I mean lobster risotto? How can you go wrong? The pastry chef, Emily, is the best in town. For people that don't spend time in Charleston the service probably does seem lax. For those of us that live here, it's very Charleston; refined yet relaxed. Oh, and Jack B. definitely is making things up seeing as he said he's been for lunch. They aren't and never have been open for lunch. If for any reason you do have issues with the food or service, just ask to speak to Mickey, the manager. He will be more than happy to help you out. And an fyi, Chef Bob Waggoner has left and now Michelle Weaver is in charge. (She's been his sous chef for years.)

My wife and I had dinner here on a Friday night just before XMAS. I'll start with the only bad. We had to wait 40 minutes for our table even though we had a reservation. The good. The front end manager was well aware of our wait and comped us both a glass of wine. Nice touch. From there the evening was fantastic. I had the lobster app and the Ribeye. Both were out of this world. Wife had carpaccio app and scallop entree. They were both heavenly. We finished by sharing a cheese platter. Wow! The bartender made me a "Bumblebee", which is gin, honey & lemon. It was one of the tastiest and most refreshing drinks I have had. Overall, a 5-star experience. Thank you Chef Waggoner!!!
(5)Alex K.
One of the best meals of my life. Fried shrimp; heirloom tomatoes and ravioli for apps. Beef tenderloin and salmon for entrees. Red velvet Alaska (s'more on steroids) for dessert. Strong wine selection. Awesome live jazz. Wonderful seating and overall aesthetic ambience. Only reason this review isn't five stars is because while the service was solid, it was surprisingly a bit slow. There were a few times we commented we would have preferred that the gentleman refilling our water, who was significantly more attentive than our waiters (both of them), would have been our waiter. For such a wonderful restaurant, this incongruence was not easily overlooked; at this level, all touches should be extraordinary. Luckily, this can be fixed. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Amazing meal. Amazing service. I'm a vegetarian and was worried about finding good veggie options in the South. I had one of the best vegetarian meals of my life here. It was truly great. I would say more but I'd just be repeating myself.

I picked this from a list the B&B sent us that I compared to other reviews. This place was awesome. I was there for my birthday. We were seating at a banquette for two. Flowers were on the table. There were two main servers who called us by name a number of times. The hostesses wished me a Happy Birthday as we checked in. The food was stellar. We started with champagne and a mixed drink - yum!! Our appetizers were visually delicious as well as tastefully so. The chef sent out an avocado/salmon special to taste. Recently we have stopped ordering wines by the bottle - the choices of wine by the glass were great and we each enjoyed our selections. I had scallops that were so good I was tempted to lick the plate!! Partner had the Wrec fish that was outstanding. We were never rushed but were able to enjoy each course, the music and the ambiance. Partner ordered a port and they brought me a great dessert wine without me even ordering it! Then we ordered dessert which was just yummy and then they brought out a small selection with a candle. I can not think of a meal that I have had that was as good and as well executed as this dinner ! Congratulations to a great place!! To echo another reviewer WOWOWOWOW!!!

Foie and peaches. So yummy. Husband and I each ordered our own portion. We hate to share our foie. Had the lobster and it was equally good. Wish we lived here in Charleston, so we we could go back more often! Oh and the fact that everyone who served us knew our name and that it was our anniversary was a very nice touch.
(4)Jeff S.
Probably my best dining experience in Charleston to date. Great ambiance, service, live jazz, etc. Had a delicious steak with giant oyster mushrooms that was amazing. The foie gras and waffle app is a must have!

My wife and I went here on the first night of our honeymoon. The food was incredible (best cornbread I think I've ever had) and the service was great. Mickey recognized us from an earlier encounter in the hotel and was extremely gracious at dinner, including recommending and making us dinner reservations at two other fantastic restaurants in Charleston. A fabulous start to our honeymoon!

The attention to detail is what sets this restaurant apart from all other fine dining experiences I've had. My boyfriend and I decided to go to Charleston Grill for our anniversary on Friday night. When we walked in we were greeted warmly and the manager and two hosts who wished us a happy anniversary and took the time to make sure we were welcome. The atmosphere is incredible and romantic. Live jazz warms the mood and the leather seats are really comfortable! We were seated so we had a beautiful view of the garden and the extraordinary live jazz music, and we were close enough to hold hands. The wine the server suggested was superb. Our sparking water and wine were kept on ice and refilled like clockwork. The servers were polite, knowledgeable, and friendly. I have tricky dietary restrictions and it meant so much to my boyfriend and I that the chef whipped up two delicious dishes from scratch for me! They looked beautiful, and tasted great! The waiters were all very understanding about my specific dietary needs. They had the perfect balance -of politeness and maturity- and they never came across as pretentious or stuffy. My boyfriend got the catfish and fried ousters and loved them. He said the oysters were delicious and the catfish was perfectly seasoned and tender. For desert we had a phenomenal desert wine and my boyfriend got the fried bananas with peanut brittle. You have to try this dish! Throughout dinner it was the little things that truly made this experience one of the most memorable I've ever had. They even gave us a cute little "Happy Anniversary" second dessert! And took the time to explain the history of the wines to us! And took beautiful pictures for us! A truly romantic, memorable, unpretentious, and phenomenal experience in one of the classiest restaurants I have ever been to.

I've eaten at the Grill a few times and each time have been blown away by the food. I know several people who have worked either in the kitchen or in the FoH at the Grill and there are some extremely talented people working under Chef Waggoner and now Chef Weaver. I am not blowing smoke up their butts simply because I know them. I've tasted the food. The quality of the ingredients alone is worth 4 stars (dry aged beef, black truffle butter, fresh lamb, quail, desserts made daily by the pastry chef, Emily, who is a genius, seasonal fruits and veggies); add to that the perfect preparation combined with the creativity and spectacular service and I bump it up to 5 stars. I've never been disappointed when I've eaten here. I live in DC now, but I plan on saving money specially for a dinner at the Charleston Grill during my next trip to Charleston.

How Charleston Grill consistently lands on someone's best restaurant in Charleston list is beyond me. Lousy food in my opinion. Extremely small portions. Lousy service. Pretentious. Can you say OVERRATED loudly enough?

What an AWESOME place to eat! I was treated like a queen when I walked in the door. Ate at the bar, and they had reserved a seat just for me. Theresa my waitress was very informative, and gave me choices for non-alcoholic drinks. I had a sparkling pomegranate "champagne", and a red Merlot...very elegant and tasty. I asked Mouzon, the bartender what he recommended and he gave me GREAT suggestions which I took him up on! My appetizer was a taste of the south. Crab cakes with shrimp & a very light sauce, then seared scallops with a fennel salad on top and a black bean reduction sauce around the plate. Then creme brulee' for dessert. You could see the vanilla bean all through it. It may be expensive for some, but your getting beautiful ambiance, SUPERIOR food, and AMAZING service! I would highly recommend this to anyone. It would have been a perfect evening except the 3 women that were gabbing so loudly beside me that I couldn't hear the jazz band that was playing that night.

This is the.best.restaurant.in .Charleston.period. I've lived here for going on 6 years and I've been eating here for almost 10. I've tried just about every restaurant in town- fine dining and otherwise. This is a world class gem of a dining establishment. Your server(s) and the hostess greet and seat you by name, the menu is mesmorizing, and the food is earth shatteringly fantastic. The lamb chops are my all time favorite. I would also highly reccomend askig your server or the the sommelier to pair wines for you by the glass. It really adds to the experience and I've never had a glass that wasn't amazing. They have live jazz on weekends and the decor/ambiance of the restaurant (updated 2 years ago) is next to none. If you are looking for THE special dining experience in town- this is it. It will not disapoint. The only things to worry about would be how you'll decide what to order (so many amazing options) and how you'll leave room for dessert- which you had BETTER do. And in regards to those 1 and 2 star reviews posted- I've been eating at the Charleston Grill for 8 years now and whoever had the audacity to say that the food OR the service was less than spectacular just plain doesn't know food!!!

I was amazed by how unpolished the service was here. For such a highly rated and respected restaurant I wasn't at all impressed. We were there on the 4th of July so the place was slow and maybe we had the B team for servers.... We started with the crab cakes by our waiter suggestion which were great, almost all meat and no filling it had very fresh, tender meat. I went on to the Venison entree which I won't recommend. It was a dish with no outstanding taste of profile. The meat itself very mild. I switched over to my fianc's Sunchoked Ravioli's with Quail which were much better and much more unique. For dessert they did bring us a really well done chocolate dessert for our celebration which was a great suprise. Another nice touch was that our coffee was pressed at the table making for some wonderfully strong coffee. I wouldn't ever go back with what seems like so many other great otion to eat..... damn FIG for being closed!

Excellent restaurant nestled in The Charleston Place Hotel. We experienced superb service and fabulous food.

As a self proclaimed foodie, I did my research before my fiance and I went to Charleston. This particular restaurant was the most frequently mentioned as THE place to go in Charleston. I'd have to say that we were entirely disappointed. Don't get me wrong - nothing was bad per se - but very few things stood out (which is unfortunate because this was not an inexpensive meal). It was a 50/50 evening for the group as a whole and I lucked out to be on the upper half with great dishes. I would definitely recommend the crab cakes which were very fresh and meaty with little filler, the sunchoke ravioilis with a wild mushroom demi glace, and the pear bread pudding (my fiance's father and I decided to "share" - more like I ate it all before he even saw it set down!). Overall - fancy schmancy to be expected with very little WOW factor other than the emptiness of your wallet.

a great restaurant with excellent food, extensive wine list, and impeccable service! we came here for our one-year anniversary and were treated to an amazing meal. ordered a bottle of pinot noir from oregon on the waiter's recommendation - man, that waiter knows his stuff! we shared two appetizers, an entree, and a cheese course between the two of us. tuna and hamachi sashimi was sooo good and fragrant with lemongrass oil and crunchy with black/red salt - much more crudo-like that regular sashimi. roasted beet salad with creamy brillat savarin and sunchoke ravioli with seared quail were both also delicious. cheese course came with five different cheeses, the highlight of which was the blue cheese (forgot the name). got some extra free treats like a tiny tasting/amuse bouche, free glasses of dessert wine, and little chocolates to end the meal. and the dessert wine we got paired perfectly with the pungent blue cheese on the cheese course! thanks for a memorable anniversary meal, charleston grill!

Charleston Grill is FANTASTIC. Hands down the best, most consistent fine dining restaurant in the city. I lived in Charleston for a few years and recently moved to San Francisco, and I have nostalgia for this place. The majority of birthdays, anniversaries and Valentines Days were spent here and they were all spectacular. Fabulous service, sommelier, and food! I haven't had a bad or even mediocre experience here--everything is top notch. There is one little negative thing... the tuna appetizer (with the pomegranate) tastes like dish soap but everything else has been so great I can't take away stars for that. So, skip it and enjoy everything else that is pure deliciousness.
