Let's start by saying we have a large family that was in town from everywhere in every direction. I called the brick house to make reservations for 16 that then turned into 10. They had no problem with that and set up a beautiful table on their front porch for all of our guests. The service was outstanding, the atmosphere fantastic, but most importantly the food was perfect. My fiance and I shared a bowl of Tile fish and crab chowder and the watermelon and feta salad that we're both beautiful and delicious for starters. Then we went our separate ways for the main course. I had the lemon basil seared ahi tuna with a side of fresh haricot verts. My handsome fella had the tile fish with fresh kale and spinach. we were lucky enough to go at a time when heirloom tomatoes I'm fresh and beautiful and the Chef gave them the proper justice. two thumbs up great time had by all. we would highly recommend this place.

Great food. Seafood was awesome. We were a party of eight and everyone loved their entrees. Good price-point for what you get. Service was excellent. And they have live music outside.

Very unprofessional. Would not recommend. I tried the dijon fried flounder and they might as well have called it dried flounder. Staff is not friendly whatsoever

Excellent spot to eat. Crab cakes were almost all crab meat. Aunt had dessert and they made an error. Left that dessert and gave us the correct one. Customer service excellent! Highly recommend.
(5)Andrea C.
They don't even deserve 1 star. The food was subpar and now that I heard that the staff is also racist I had to review. Disgusting.

Don't let the outside of this restaurant fool you. It is very welcoming inside and well worth the visit. My wife and I went here for the first time last night on a whim as we found an extremely long wait at another local restaurant . We started with the mussels as an appetizer and we could have devoured 3 more plates. For dinner she had the shrimp with angel hair pasta and I ordered the grilled tuna medium rare with perfectly cook asparagus. Both dishes were outstanding. We finished the night listening to a live band outside in front of an open fire. Very happy we stumbled upon this place and we will definitely go back.
(5)Philip A.
Very cool restaurant, bar, music venue, backyard kind of place. We had drinks and listen to live music outside. We didn't try the food, but hear it's good. This place had a hippy kind of vibe, which I am not usually into. That being said, I really enjoyed myself there. Just a great ultra casual hangout spot In the summer

It looks like it might be the set of a southern horror film but everyone is very personable. I had grilled shrimp with zucchini and brown rice which was good but not amazing. We were told that if we wanted to have dessert we needed to get up and follow the waitress because it was "visual." The visual was a glassdoor refrigerator near a painting of a black servant holding a pie.
(3)Chloe W.
Racist, unprofessional, proof of this family's blatant disregard for human rights. Staff is very rude and service is slow, I went here with my family and the service was slow and the wait is long. Absolutely do NOT recommend, will not be returning either.. not worth wasting your money
(1)J L.
Unprofessional, racist and ignorant. Might as well fork over your money to the KKK.
(1)August W.
Awfully customer service, employs and condones racists/racist behavior

Ate here on a Friday evening. I love the porch. The staff was friendly and helpful. I ordered the angel hair pasta with shrimp, feta, tomatoes and artichoke hearts. The food came out really quickly. Too quickly. There were also blueberries in the dish which was odd. I really tried to like it. But I couldn't. It was way too salty. I thought it was just saltiness from the feta but it couldn't be just that. It was also very garlicky. The shrimp were well cooked. The artichoke hearts were mushy and the pasta overcooked. It's hard to describe and maybe it's just me, but I didn't like it at all. My wife had linguini with a marinara sauce. It was better but it seemed like store bought sauce and there just wasn't much to it. There was no bread or side with the linguini (or for the table). I heard good things about their eggplant parmigiana but it wasn't on the menu when I was there.

The house is gorgeous and offers nice ambiance. We had a great family dinner sitting on the wide front porch. Great entree options and interesting & ample choices for sides. Phenomenal desserts to boot -- the orange cream cake is a can't miss!
(5)William A.
Great atmosphere with food to match. Sit outside with the live band. The weekly drum circle is sure to bring out Charleston's more eclectic residents.

My husband and I had seen this outside fence a few times when we were heading to Folly beach, but had never stopped. We decided to give it a shot for dinner and we very happy about our choice. The restaurant is an old brick home (hence the name) and it has character and charm in every corner you turn. The grounds are beautiful, complete with a wooden swing and outdoor bar and dining area. The inside of the restaurant is very cozy and is appropriate for an intimate dinner or a family dinner with children. I was totally smitten when I saw they had magazines out for their guests. Sipping sweet tea from an Eco-friendly cup while reading through a Martha Stewart Weddings is pretty spectacular. I had the salmon cakes with past salad and my husband had the bbq pot roast sandwich with grilled sweet potatoes. Everything was great and fresh, but I liked the grilled sweet potatoes more than pasta salad I had chosen. We finished off our dinner with a chocolate chip cheesecake and lemon buttercream cake. NOMZ, The cheesecake was so fresh and it had a thin cake layer for a crust. By the time our plates were clean the sun had set and my husband and I decided to walk around outside a little. A live band was setting outside and we only wish we would have had time to stay and watch them. They serve Lunch until 2:30pm then reopen for dinner at 5pm and do a Sunday Brunch. They even have an upcoming outdoor artisan market on the grounds. ***** I almost forgot THEY DON'T TAKE CREDIT CARDS! So make sure you take cash or check.

My hubby and I came back to Charleston for a visit this past fall. Of course Brick House was top of our list to dine! The buffalo shrimp are so good we had to ask for another order after inhaling the first. We ate at so many excellent restaurants and Brick House really holds its own with food and uniqueness of experience. Nothing pretentious or overly fancy, just comfortable, casual and awesome, awesome food. The desserts are so incredible! I would eat here all the time if I were local...seriously.

We passed by this restaurant several times on the way to Folly Beach from Charleston. We finally decided to stop and are so glad we did. It's a comfy, cozy brick house with homey seating. It would be a great place for a date. The food was good, but doesn't really stand out from our other meals in Charleston. We tried two pasta dishes that were yummy, but nothing special. We did get dessert and it was soooo good; I wanted to try their cheesecake but it wasn't on the menu the night we were in, so we got some kind of chocolately goodness in a bowl (with fresh whipped cream on the top). I forget the name now. They do have a super chill bar out back, and after we ate, we got a drink in the garage. Good beer selection. Love the outdoor seating, including a porch swing. Best of all, they DO accept credit cards now. A very cool place to check out.

I have never written a Yelp review, and was compelled to do so because of the quality of both the food and the service at Brick House Kitchen. We passed by Brick House on the way to another restaurant when visiting the Charleston area from Philadelphia, and upon finding the other place very crowded, decided to pop in here, without having read reviews about it. We sat outside at first, and enjoyed the peaceful and open outdoor area (we arrived around 5:30: we have a toddler, and a highchair and cup with lid and straw were brought to us by our server without having to ask). It started raining, then went inside, several staff members making sure all our food and belongings made it inside to a cozy corner table. What a wonderful atmosphere! Intimate, non-fussy, casual, yet warm. I had the grouper (amazing!) and my husband had the salmon (equally amazing!) We had dessert (hello, black bottom cake), and our daughter enjoyed grazing off our plates. This was an inviting, lovely, enjoyable dinner. I highly recommend Brick House Kitchen - for the quality of the atmosphere, service, and food. Well done, y'all! (Do I sound like a local? ;) )

Beautiful old brick house on folly road surrounded by makeshift fencing, a stage, bar areas, a tarped carport, run down furniture, etc. this place just needs to be a late night spot, and quit the restaurant business. The 'creamy crab soup' was warm milk and butter with minced (canned) crab meat in the bottom - worst I have ever had by far. Unnamed fish tortillas were anchored by brown rice (most entrees were) that was absolutely waterlogged. Food was very bad all around. Served water in plastic 'to go' cups, and service was unfamiliar with menu, and slow as well. We waited 20 minutes for a check, after asking twice. Go here to party and pass out in the gravel, just don't eat.

First, I've lived in Charleston for a little over 2 years, & have eaten at quite a few really good restaurants in that time. This was absolutely the worst restaurant I've eaten at in Charleston. I had the crab cake entree for $22. The 2 sad crab cakes were gray, watery, tepid, & tasted as if they were made with either old crab or canned crab. I chose the "braised" butternut squash side. The squash was cut into variously sized chunks; squares, rectangles, slivers. Well, it was definitely not braised. It was either microwaved or steamed, & was therefore watery, tasteless, & unevenly cooked. Some of it was crunchy & some soft. As a garnish, the cook tossed a few leaves of bagged baby spinach on the plate. I ordered a glass of cabernet to go with this sad excuse for a meal. Clearly the bottle had been open for quite some time since it had a distinctly oxidized taste. If I hadn't been with a large group of friends from our of town who chose this place, I wouldn't have paid for any of it.

How do you accurately describe eating at the Brick House Kitchen?! Well, it's a lot like breaking into a strange grandmother's charming old house, having a gourmet chef make you an amazing and fresh meal, eating it in granny's living room, and then hanging out in her huge back yard with your friends under the beautiful Spanish Moss covered oaks while a bartender serves you drinks from her garage. I went to see a concert, which was amazing and one of the coolest venues I've ever been to, and decided to eat before hand since I'd heard so many good things! I was not disappointed!!! When we walked up, there was an oyster boat parked out front still dripping dry from just being pulled out of the water. Needles to say, we started with a bucket of oysters! They were awesome! $8 got us a HUGE bucket of oysters we couldn't even finish! They were super fresh, perfectly salty, and steamed to perfection. They supplied us with a tray of crackers and condiments, some towels, and some shuckers and I was transported to mollusk heaven! Had the olive oil/shrimp/artichoke/feta angel hair pasta and was super happy with it! Very fresh and light despite being pasta. GF had a tomato bisque and pecan/apple/feta salad and loved it! Everything we ate was great! Only possible critique of the meal was that the staff was not too knowledgeable about the menu or the beer selections for the night. The vibe is pretty casual, so no biggie, but I'd like them to be able to tell me what's on draught and who brews them. They were all super friendly though, so no biggie. All payments done via iPad and Swipe too, which is pretty cool. Next, the show out back was AMAZING! The amazing band, Ordinary Men, covering Pink Floyd to perfection aside, there was an incredible light and laser show set up on a very large and professional stage you'd never expect. The whole concert area is canopied by live oaks and Spanish Moss so it's a super unique and sublimely southern place to see a show! If you can, do it!!! The outdoor bar is set up in a completely refurbished garage and they have all the beer/wine/liquor you can want. There's covered areas, a hot dog/bar food cart, and even a fire pit. It was one amazing evening and Brick House had everything covered perfectly start to finish! Super glad this place exists and I will definitely be back!!! If you've been on the fence or this is your first time learning about it, go! If you can take in a show too, it will blow your mind! You'll never expect the professional level of audio/lights/effects they pull off in a back yard! It's guaranteed to be one of the most unique food and entertainment experiences of your life...and you won't even have to wait for granny to leave town to sneak in!!!

The food and staff are outstanding at BHK, as is the uniqueness of this family owned establishment. While I've enjoyed many a meal there, I sought them out for another purpose...catering. Our team at a local decorative accessories store had inventory to do. BHK was more than accommodating, as they agreed (even though not typically open for lunch on a Monday) to cater some on/off menu food for us. The chicken salad was great (served 2 ways), as well as the modified sesame vegetable saute menu dish (served over small pasta shells vs. brown rice) to make it an abundant nice, healthy vegetable dish instead of a typical lettuce salad. In addition, we received outstanding chocolate granache and German chocolate cupcakes. Everything was packaged perfectly along with the accommodating plates/utensils. We highly recommend BHK whether for a nice quiet dinner in the dining room or a low key evening dining outside or in the bar, listening to a local or well known artist. It is very family friendly and pet friendly. Portions are amazing as is value pricing. BHK food rivals any fine dining establishment elsewhere.

This is BY FAR the most underrated restaurant in Charleston. We live on James Island and it hardly gets better in Charleston than sitting under the oaks having a dinner of local produce/fish made w/ love and a great band playing to you! It's is our favorite Friday night tradition. The food here is consistently amazing! Always local veggies that melt in your mouth. The BBQ Mahi Mahi is one of the most amazing dishes I have ever had. And you simply haven't lived until you dive straight in to the dessert fridge!!! All freshly made by the owner's family, and the best desserts I have ever had the pleasure of eating! Everything about this spot is positive vibes, from the service, to the ambience, to the beautiful music, and the food. LOVE the BHK!!!
(5)Charlalee S.
Food sensitively prepared...all absolutely fresh, not overlooked. Outside is like a return to the best part of the 60's, with live music that is not overwhelming. And a drumming group on Tuesday night to eat by.
(5)Tawni P.
Absolutely loved this place! Drove by several times while vacationing on Folly and finally stopped in for dinner on our next-to-last-day. Wish we had stopped in sooner so we could have eaten here a few more times! Charming and quirky setting...ate dinner outdoors while a great band played and a surfing video projected onto an old box truck. Bar is in the converted garage and is super cute. The dips are fabulous, and we had a shrimp-artichoke-basil pasta that was out of this world! Family owned-Grandma makes the desserts! Don't pass this one by!
(5)C. V.
It was fabulous. The husband's salmon was very fresh & so was my shrimp. It has lots of atmosphere. Just go...you will not regret it.

This restaurant is inside an actual brick house. The outdoor seating area is very charming with candles and lights strung over head. Our server was very polite and accommodating. She was happy to answer any questions we had about the menu, and was patient when telling us the off-menu daily specials. The menu isn't very big, they offered maybe 10 entree choices along with a few appetizers. I chose one of the daily specials, a scallop and spinach linguine with goat cheese. The scallops were nicely prepared and I loved the goat cheese. Everything they offer here is on the lighter/healthier side. They offer sides like kale and quinoa with their pan seared seafood selections. Which isn't a problem, just something to take note of. I felt it was a bit pricey, but I understand the cost of fresh seafood. Overall, the food was good but not the best I've had in town.

Delicious. I always get the angel hair pasta or whatever local seafood is in. The staff is always great and it is awesome to be able to choose to eat inside or outside. The music is always amazing!

Fabulous! Friday night we had the pleasure of dinning here. I came across this restaurant while looking for things to do on our weekend trip to Charleston. When I saw they had a live band on Friday night we decided to try it out. Not only was the band good, the staff super friendly, but the food was AMAZING! When we arrived we had to walk into the main building to request a table. There was a hostess stand outside near the gate leading to the outdoor seating but no one was at it. They had a small wait for outdoor seating. The employee suggested we go sit near the band while we waited for our table. So we did. The band was good! The employee notified us about our table being ready about 15 minutes later. She had already put some waters on the table for us. Our waitress was friendly. We had several questions about the menu. She was was happy to answer them all and even made suggestions. I was pleased that they were willing and able to make adjustments to entrees. We had crab cakes (which was pure crab no breading) and a angle hair pasta dish (I subbed chicken for shrimp). We also ordered dessert. I can not remember what type of cheesecake we got but we ate every piece! Every thing we tasted was delicious. The drinks were good as well. Strong enough but not too strong. This place is a local spot that is a step above mom and pop. Drinks are served in Mason jars and plastic cups. Outdoor tables are patio furniture with table clothes and candles on them. The extra seating (around the smaller band stage) were various chairs. I feel this gave the place a unique feel. But want to share this information so you are prepared. It is child friendly. There were couples there with their kids. One couple with an infant another with an elementary aged child. We will make sure to return the next time we're in Charleston.

Been to this place a couple times... Since I'm on vacation, I wanna keep it simple- this place rocks, very Awesome staff, and the Food is AMAZING using mostly local ingredients - Great Beer selection as well- what more can you ask for?
(5)Lisa F.
We love this place so much we come every Tuesday night. They have a wonderful community drum circle which anyone can participate. If we are lucky the beautiful women from a local African Dance troop will come and give a spectacular show. There is outdoor seating that is quite romantic and doesn't feel like your on top of each other. The staff is very accommodating and on several occasions has brought me my favorite cocktail on arrival. The food is a perfect combination of farm to table veges, and boat to table seafood. If you are vegetarian they are happy to combine any of their delicious sides with Jalapeno Jasmine Rice or something similar. Of Course we stay to hear Graham Whorley and friends.... you never know who will show up to jam on stage....maybe a harmonica player with a saxophone player to add some blues and jazz to your evening. Or maybe it's another talented guitar player and Gypsy Jazz wafts through those gorgeous trees. We love the fact that we can bring our furbaby puppy and they accommodate her as well with fresh water and plenty of love!
(5)Helen C.
Wonderful meal. Service was great. They had a band outside. It was hard to hear but fun. The shrimp pasta and seared salmon both rocked.
(4)Christine K.
Unprofessional. Zero stars if I could. I will not tolerate a business that hires a racist staff and does nothing about it when confronted
(1)Michelle S.
I live down the street from this restaurant and always forget to come here. But when I do, it is always an enjoyable meal. This was my first time sitting outside. There was live music and the outdoor space it's very eclectic and one-of-a-kind. It's a very laid-back environment and I love that they are so environmentally friendly! They also have the fattest cat ever. So, if you don't like animals greeting you at your table you should probably sit indoors.
(4)Justin J.
Awful customer service. Recently at a concert with horrendous parking. After contacting staff about be blocked in I was told to ask the band to announce for the car owner to move their car. Brickhouse took zero responsibility for their parking lot.
(1)Erica F.
Amazing customer service. We came in with a group of 16 and it started raining so they're created dining space for us outside on their porch underneath the roof. There were blankets for us because it became chilly, and the live music was amazing, along with the fire pit. The entire experience was incredibly authentic and the staff were so genuinely kind and intent upon ensuring a great experience for us, which as college students is greatly appreciated. The food was also high quality but I would come again regardless just for the atmosphere and sincerity of the owners + staff.
(5)Mark L.
The Brick House Kitchen is where Woodstock and Pleasantville left off and then merged together for a cohesive family entertainment and food stop. With outdoor music most evenings a stop at the Brick House is more than entertaining. On Tuesdays, there is a drum circle and holla hooping. Bring a drum for yourself, your child or your friends and join in. This is a truly spiritual place to relax, have a beer or a nice meal. You can dine inside or out and feel at home.

Wow the crab cakes were EPIC so great the staff super nice Great food the full of old James island And charleston SC

Near perfection - By far the best meal we had at Folly Beach this entire week. Great way to finish our vacation with an early dinner at the Brickhouse Kitchen. This was our first visit to this restaurant but certainly won't be our last!! The character, charm, and overall ambience of the restaurant were enticing and the evening just kept getting better. Our server Kristina was also charming, super efficient, and this was followed by the excellent entrees. The BBQ Mahi Mahi was excellent as were my wife's crab cakes. The desserts were also really good. The three of us all ordered different options and each of us was happy. The black bottom dessert was super, and the strawberry shortcake was also good, but my father-in-law's banana pudding may have won the best in show prize. Kind of wet outside but on a drier night the music would have been one more positive. If you are looking for something better than the other options at Folly Beach take the short drive down the road to James Island's Brickhouse Kitchen - You won't be disappointed!!!!
(5)Terri C.
We had a fabulous evening here! Great southern cuisine and a nice laid back atmosphere. They have live music most nights as well!
(5)David T.
Really good. The food and staff were first-rate. The outside, from the roadway into Folly is off putting. There is no fear here. We were early and the outside dining was odd as we were the only guests. No doubt we will be back, as it is only 4 minutes from home. I guess that is normal, that we all think nothing of traveling 30 minutes to a good restaurant but ignore the jewels near home! Go to this place. You will not be disappointed.
(4)Laura H.
They were obviously in the weeds when we arrived, but we gladly grabbed a drink to wait. The food was great! Pasta with shrimp and artichokes was the best! I had the Greek grouper and it was so fresh and light. Must try the buffalo fried shrimp. Interesting and delicious take on a classic recipe. By far the best flavor I've ever had with buffalo shrimp. Got dessert to go since we were both sporting food babies by the time we were done eating. Atmosphere is super casual and prices are good for the area. Could have done without the live music outside, but that may have just been that particular band. Go try! You won't regret!
(4)Ariella K.
We came here on a recent trip because it looked like a great venue and some of our party wanted to avoid the typical fried seafood places. We ate outside, which was lovely. The house itself and the wonderful old trees surrounding it make a perfect backdrop for an evening out. The did serve water and tea in disposable plastic cups, which is something of a pet peeve of mine (especially when the entrees are mostly $20+), but that might have only been because we were outside. The menu was mostly lighter entrees with a couple of pasta dishes thrown in. The sides read more like something from a vegetarian sandwich shop than a relatively pricey dinner place, but I thought perhaps they would elevate them. I got the seared local tuna with tomatoes and basil as a side. I ordered my tuna rare, as did one of my friends, but both pieces of fish came out decidedly beyond that. The tuna was fine, but not particularly well-seasoned. The tomatoes and basil were just that - unseasoned slices of tomatoes with a couple of basil leaves. Not bad, but I expected more from a $25 entree. There was no bread or anything else with the meal other than the random pieces of lettuce it was served on and I was still pretty hungry afterward. Apparently everyone else in my party was as well, because we all ordered and finished a dessert by ourselves. Dessert was probably the highlight of the meal, which is unfortunate, since I'm not really a dessert person and only ordered one because I knew I'd be starving before bed otherwise. If I came here again, I'd probably just grab a drink and check out the live music instead of spending that much on an unsatisfying entree.

I don't know why it took me so long to finally try this place, but I've been missing out on an awesome place to hang out. The "back yard" here is awesome. Huge patio and stage, plenty of shade and room to move around. I went on a Monday night for a show with a friend, and I instantly fell in love with the atmosphere. Theres a tiny little bar behind the stage, and the bartender was a cool dude. Any time I walk into a place and there's skate videos playing, put me on the regulars list. I haven't eaten here, but I definitely will be back to do so.
