5 spice pork is AMAZING! Only been in Charleston a week and have already been here twice. Staff were super friendly as well!

Best Happy Hour in Town! Hands down! It's short and only once a week - Fridays 5-7 (I think, maybe 4-7). It is a very small spot, so it's GREAT carry out food or, if there is space (there are about 9 seats), its just fine to eat inside too. Great food at affordable prices. A great beer selection for such a tiny place with hardly any cooler space. They have 5 options for proteins and then you can build them 1 of 3 ways - banh mi sandwich, taco, or salad. Each iteration has slightly different ingredients, but all are super awesome. This is one of my favorite experiences in town - swing by on Friday for a few tacos and a Westbrook White Thai and the weekend is off to an AMAZING start.

THREE STAR REVIEW 6/11/2015: I'm not a huge fan of banh mis, so I can't be a great judge of this place, but here's why I gave three stars: I think if Bon Banh Mi really had great flavor combinations, my opinion on bahn mis could have changed. Therefore, I didn't want to give 5 stars. Also, their place was a bit small, which brought the stars down to 3. It was crowded when my friend and I went, and although they took our order, we had a hard time finding seats and had to stand for a bit with our food before we could sit down. I believe parking is also strictly street parking if I remember correctly. The reason why I kept the stars at 3 instead of knocking down the rating to 2 stars is because they seem to use pretty fresh ingredients. I didn't see any browning or yellowing vegetation. So... take this review with a grain of salt, but I won't be going back or recommending it to any of my friends. UPDATE 6/16/2015: I upped the review to four stars simply because Jason, one of the owners, contacted me with regards to the review I'd posted above. He was extremely professional and courteous, and encouraged me to try Bon Bahn Mi again. He mentioned that there IS parking behind the restaurant (yay!), and that they were in the process of finding a bigger place. I will be going back in the future to give this place a second chance (and to write a real updated review) because Jason showed me that the owners really care about their customers' experiences and are willing to improve.

Easily one of if not the best lunch joint in charleston proper and surrounding. Quality, flavorful, interesting Vietnamese/French infusion keeps me coming back at least 3 times a week. Still I'm not their top regular! Friendly service is important to me and it comes in spades here ;) the icing on the cake is after a great lunch walk away with the absolute best iced Vietnamese coffee this side of the ho chi mein trail!

Banh Mi in Charleston? Even my friend from the Bay Area was surprised when I checked in here. As I was touting a party of 10 around South Carolina, we needed a place where we could all eat and get full for lunch. And can I say, planning for that many people is tough! So (un)luckily, I was planner of all the places that we were going to visit and eat. I decided because of this many people that this spot would be place to visit after our walk around Patriots Point. I was craving some banh mi at the time. So this banh mi shop was a side street shop. It was small, but luckily we came during an off time. We took up all the seating, but it was a definite take out order type of place. I would come here all the time if I lived near there. Walk in, place your order, and they make it right in front of your eyes. They had fresh ingredients and multiple types of sandwiches. The price was a little high for banh mi, but hey, that was the only (sort of) bad thing. Each sandwich was under $10. One thing that did catch my eye was that I saw fellow Charlotteans working there, so that was nice to see. What gave it away? It was the Charlotte hornets hat. He responded that he knew that I was from Charlotte too with my UNCC bag. If I'm ever in a banh mi mood, I'll be back here if I'm in town.

You'll be hard pressed to find light, healthy, fulfilling and reasonably priced lunches in downtown Charleston, but Bon Bahn Mi nailed it. The 2 tacos I had on Monday blew my mind. I freakin inhaled those things, they were so good. Upon entering, the bougie (boo-she) customers there at the time were funking up the place with their funky elitist attitudes (off topic), which threw me off a bit, but the fella behind the counter quelled my creeping second thoughts. I ordered the red curry tofu taco...phenomenal. Nice firm and well seasoned tofu, fresh ingredients, the unexpected sweet bite from the picked carrots and radish, and the cilantro! Oh the fresh abundant cilantro...so amazing. My second taco had the lemongrass chicken. Also wonderful, nicely seasoned, moist and flavorful. If driving here, be mindful of the ongoing heavy construction happening right on the block this spot is on. Thankfully I work within walking distance! If your lucky, you can snag a seat and eat in, but plan on togo as there are only 10 chairs. Maybe more/less, I can't quite remember off hand, but more than a handful of people there at one time, and it is suck in and ease by small.

I've ordered delivery from here now about three times, and everything is always superb. I really enjoy the lemongrass chicken (on anything) the most, but the five spice pork is also very yummy! My coworker raves about their tofu. I usually get the sandwich - their tacos are great, but just not my thing. I've never eaten the salad, but I have tasted their ginger dressing which is to die for! My order is always made correctly, and the food is always hot, so kudos to the staffers. I LOVE Bon Banh Mi for lunch and can't wait to go and visit their storefront to see the people behind this awesome food.

First time visit with my fussy hubby. We loved it! Hubby ordered the egg & ham sandwich & I the lemongrass chicken sandwich. He gobbled down his sandwich & ate half of my salad. He also ordered the Double Chocolate Stout, which was way too stout for me, but he enjoyed it. Food was served fresh & promptly. Always like it when I can watch my food prepared, too. I'd give it a 5 except that seating is VERY limited. We'll be back!

Very nice calm and laid back place. Nice people, nice food, all is good. My lunch was flavorful and fresh, you can tell when a salad is actually fresh or not and mine was definitively a crunchy good salad. I have to say that the food is maybe a bit too flavorful! The combination of spices, simmering .. and whatever else magic, makes the food almost unrecognizable. It is a good taste, but for my personal preference I still like to distinguish the taste of what's composing the meal. Good lunch joint

I had the traditional banh mi and found it to be a bit odd. I'm not sure if it was the time I went to eat (afternoon so not really a mealtime) or what I ordered, but I wasn't as enthused as most reviewers. I wouldn't say the sandwich was bad, but it wasn't amazing. My lunch companion ordered a salad and I wouldn't recommend that based on what I saw her eating. It was a pre-portioned mix of lettuce (perhaps iceberg) and a glop of meat on top. Not very appetizing looking, but she did say she enjoyed the touch of cilantro. In essence, stick to the sandwich and it'll be good, but perhaps not the bestest in your life.

Can't believe it took me this long to check this place out. So yummy! Sandwiches are huge.

Five stars. Amazing little sandwich place. The food is a nice viet American fusion. Sandwiches are tasty and are just the right size. Must try the lemongrass chicken sandwich. There is limited seating inside and the place is packed at lunch hour. But the food is great and makes it worth the wait. I will be back shortly to try more of the menu.

Went one month ago for the first time and have been back twice now. Location is good although seems tougher to get to than it is. Near Med U on Spring St. The enthusiasm of the staff the first time was enough to get us to come back. The two girls behind the counter were so great at helping us rookies order and obviously they drink the Kool-Aid. And after our second visit I think we do to. My wife and I have been 2 times together, the second time was on their Friday 5-7 Happy hour where basically all their sandwiches and tacos except for the Curry Beef is half off. I now have had the Country Pate in the sandwich and Taco form. Both delicious but thinking that the fresh toasted baguette was too good so might have to go with that in the future. Full price is good but the HH deal made it even better. Right now some sidewalk construction that makes it a little more difficult to find a spot but some parking in rear that is tight with the construction but probably done soon. We have gotten "Doris Day Parking" both times and gotten a spot right out front! We sit in the window and watch the traffic and people go by and listen to the great staff. Good selection of beers as well. I am sold and see you every Friday that I am available.

Fantastic little Vietnamese sandwich shop just off of 17 right downtown. I ordered the Five-Spice Pork sandwich, and it was a treat. (First, having "five-spice" in the name of the sandwich doesn't necessarily mean spicy...this sandwich is not spicy in the least.) The bread was cooked perfectly, pork bits cooked perfectly, and the added FRESH cucumber, carrots, (lemongrass/parsley..I haven't looked at the menu to see what's in it) all make for a phenomenal sandwich! Absolutely a fresh tasting sandwich that is well thought-out and worked. The shop is very small...a handful of window stools at a long table/bar, and a handful of seats at the "counter". Great setup inside though. For as many people as it seats, there is no real crowded feeling. There is a cooler full of craft beer for those "long working lunches" too. The service was great-absolutely nothing to complain about. The two working took my name (even though I was one of two that dropped by) and were very friendly. The shop was very small, so I could see it working to your advantage to open the place to get in quicker and ensure yourself a seat (I took mine to go...which was all of about 5 minutes or so to wait). Parking is the only downside here, as I didn't see any noticeable lots or garages, so you might prepare to park on the street. Keep up the good work guys!

The lemongrass chicken salad with lime vinaigrette is everything! It makes eating a healthy salad for lunch taste like a delicious splurge. I've only ever ordered delivery while at work DT and the online order option is easy, the delivery service is FAST! I look forward to meeting these geniuses of cuisine in person soon for dine in service!

This was an amazing find. My parents and I vacation along the east coast every Christmas, and we were overjoyed when this place popped up during a search for Vietnamese food that wasn't boutique and overpriced. For me, I was thrilled to be in a Vietnamese eatery that was so adorably decorated; for my parents, they were thrilled to be in an affordable Vietnamese place in Charleston. We of course ordered banh mi sandwiches and 33 beer, a popular Vietnamese beer that is super hard to find where we're from in the South. The people working there were so pleasant and thrilled that the food had my parents approval. It made for a memorable dining experience.

Hands down the best Friday happy hour in Charleston. I always start my weekend off the right way-- with a half-price Five Spice Pork banh mi and a Westbrook White Thai. The super-friendly staff know my name and usual order by now (bless you, Lauren)! Whatever sandwich you choose, BBM has delicious, aromatic flavors that you can't get anywhere else. The tofu is probably the best vegan sandwich you'll ever have. The beer selection is perfect-- they've made sure to provide only the brews that will compliment their food. And the soundtrack! Who doesn't love old Modest Mouse? Add it all up, and this is the one place I make sure to bring new visitors to the city.

I had no idea about this place until my trendy friend introduced me. It was like any other awkward first time introduction. Not much was said and the handshake was a little weird. I went in for a hug and Bon Banh Mi did this weird handshake half hug thing. Once that was out of the way, it was clear sailing! Bon Banh Mi is fantastic! It is a great spot for a quick lunch. Seating is limited and it is an adorably small set up. Their Vietnamese sandwiches are so fresh and delicious. I wanted to try every sandwich option they had! But since I am watching my boyish figure, I only had one. I went for the ginger lemongrass chicken and it was perfect. Learn from me... Bon Banh Mi isn't much of a huger. Just go for the handshake.

Ate here as the one meal I had with friends that were in town. All four of us got food poisoning that lasted a week, including one member of our group requiring a trip to the ER as symptoms got worse. The food poisoning was even worse than episode my fiance experienced in Vietnam. I know this is where we contracted the illness, as stated prior, this was the only food we all ate together. I really wanted to like this restaurant. This was my first visit. Can't go back unfortunately.

Seating was limited, but still cozy. Staff was friendly and conversational. I love a banh mi sandwich and enjoyed the one from here, but not my favorite yet. I would go back & try everything at least once because the food was fresh & delicious nonetheless. Happy hour seems like a great time to enjoy the menu at a super reasonable cost.

I haven't found anything that I don't love about this place. They don't have a ton of options but they stick to what they know. For the record, what they know is delicious. It's one of those places you always have a hard time ordering because you want one of everything. The tacos are probably my go to item because I love being able to get a variety of meat combinations. It's not the easiest place to find and the parking is an atrocity but, it's all worth it once you get inside. The atmosphere is kind-of grab-and-go but stick around and dine at the bar stools. They staff is great and up for a good conversation when it's not crazy busy. They have an creative craft beer bottle and can selection as well. Perfect for a deliciously fresh meal with a great brew on the side.

Hot damn I love this place. I believe I have tried every single banh mi in Charleston except for the Hero something stand at the farmers market, and Bon Banh Mi's are the best by far. My favorite is the 5 spice pork but the red curry beef is awesome too. I just found out they have $4 sandwiches from 5-7 on Friday, YES!!!!!! What a deal. We order from here for large groups at my office and I'd recommend that for anyone else doing office lunches too. The portions are smaller than what you get at the shop, so be mindful of that.

Stopped in today for a late lunch. Its been on my Yelp Bookmark queue for over 6 months now, and I'm happy I finally got a chance to stop in. It is a pretty small place inside with only about 8 counter seats. The menu seems small, but there is actually a good variety of options. There are three things you can get: a Banh Mi sandwich, a salad, or some tacos. Then there are fillings, of which there are many. We opted for the ginger lemongrass chicken with my friend trying the banh mi and me going for the salad. I was really impressed with the flavor of the chicken. I was a little worried the lemongrass would be overpowering, but it was relatively mild, but not by any means bland. The veggies in my salad are basically the same as what you get in the sandwich, just with lettuce added and no bun. I left pretty stuffed, which is sometimes hard to do when you get a salad. I have to say also, that if you are vegan or vegetarian, you can eat here, albeit your options are a bit limited, they are still delicious. There is limited parking, but they do offer free delivery and anywhere on the peninsula, so that's awesome! Make sure to tip your driver though!

Really low key place with a little Otis redding playing. Food is good, simple. Service is good and friendly. Tried the tacos so I could try different meets -- tried the tofu and the chicken. Both were very good.

Incredible! I had read a lot of great reviews about this place and finally had the opportunity to head downtown and check it out. It sure did not disappoint! Every bite was packed with flavor, and accompanied by the beautiful sound of a perfectly cooked roll crunching. The toppings were extremely fresh and took the sandwich to a whole new level. We got the Red Curry Beef and the Five Spice Pork. Both were extremely savory, but I have to give the win to the beef. We will definitely be back for more, and the Tamarind Shrimp has my eye. Yet another gem of Charleston!

Behold!!! The Five Spice Pork Sandwich!! BBM makes the best sandwich in town. This is not my opinion, this is fact.. The Five Spice Pork on a fresh baked roll. It's glorious.

This place is within walking distance of the hospital and had Vietnamese tacos so I figured I would give it a shot. The space is very intimate and laid back, perfect for a quick lunch. You eat at this bar with stools that overlooks the street and there are napkins and a collection of hot sauces lining the windows, really cool vibe. The staff are kind albeit a little spacey. I had the five spice pork tacos and had an out-of-body experience while I was checking my twitter. The tacos are loaded to the point of overflowing, but they knew that was going to happen so they bring you a fork. The meat is delicious and then they put all of this awesome stuff on top. Would go back. Oh, it was also super affordable. Drop what you are doing and eat at this place.

Absolutely fantastic little place for lunch or dinner! You can find street parking nearby or park behind (kind of hidden). It's hidden away from the touristy areas, but it's one of the best meals you can find in this city! The prices are higher than you'd pay at Subway, but you get a Banh Mi with quality, delicious ingredients, and plenty of it... You won't leave hungry! I work across the street and come here for lunch all the time. Every sandwich on the menu is delicious, but the five spice pork is my favorite, but followed closely by the Wednesday shrimp special!

I've heard great things about this place but parking has always been an issue so when I was able to find a parking spot, I ran in for a quick bite. I was disappointed that they didn't have any type of noddles. I tried their shrimp taco special which was soooo yummy. I'm glad the didn't have noodles because it made me try something else.

As soon as you walk in the door, the aroma is nostalgic. Food is good. Tried the curry beef. It had a hint of curry in it but still pretty tasty. They make the sandwiches fresh. The cashier was really nice and friendly.

Tried this on a whim tonight while looking for something quick to pick up for dinner. All I have to say is WOW! I had a lemongrass chicken taco and a curry beef taco. Both were out of this world delicious. I think I liked the chicken the best, but I would order either again. The sweetened, iced jasmine tea was also delicious, and service was very quick and friendly. Only qualm I have is I wish they had more options for sides other than just regular chips. Definitely will be going back, and looking forward to trying out the awesome Friday happy hour deal! (Can't beat half off sandwiches and beers!) Also good to know for, they have a parking lot behind the building.

Really good fusion sandwiches. I tried the pork, red curry beef and the lemongrass chicken and they were all great. I think the best form is the tacos, I really enjoyed them

I drove around for a good 20-30 minutes trying to find parking near this place, and ended up parking on Doughty street near MUSC and just taking a 5-10 minute walk to get here. Don't let the Spring St location turn you off. It may not be the fanciest part of town, but inside it's very clean and modern, with great service. Basically you pick your vehicle (banh mi, which is a sandwich and my personal favorite, or you have the option for tacos or a salad). Next you choose the filling. I went with the five spice pork and highly recommend that! They also have chicken, tofu, beef, etc. They gave me a side of sriracha for my sandwich so that it wouldn't get soggy, as I was taking it to go. The bread was fresh, cucumbers and carrots were crunchy, cilantro and basil added the perfect kick, and I'm now in love. Please open a location in Columbia, we are banh-mi-less!

  • Shelby B.

For lunch it's great. Not really a sit down and eat place-go for take out or delivery. The tacos are too small but the bahn mi red curry beef is amazing.

    (4)
  • Julian W.

Went here based on the raving Yelp reviews. The best way is really to simply walk over from MUSC instead of finding a parking spot. I definitely liked the interior - cool, modern, down to earth but still chic. Very friendly staff. Basically a perfect location for lunch. But I wasn't too impressed with the food. I got the 5 Spice Pork sandwich which I considered a safe option based on the reviews. Although I do like my cilantro, this sandwich had way too little meat on it and the cilantro flavor was overpowering. I would also expect a bouquet of flavors in a sandwich called 5 Spice Pork but it was just a blur. Very nice concept but I would not go again and remain hungry after a 9$ sandwich.

I don't write many reviews (this is my first on Yelp!) but I have to scribble something down for Bon Banh Mi. We were getting ready to start our drive back to Miami Saturday and my wife happened to catch a glimpse of their storefront as we were just about to jump on the highway. A quick look-up on Yelp ensured that I made a quick right turn to drive around the block and stop for a quick lunch. We got there right after the lunch rush so there were about 5 employees in a small, 20x15-ish space behind the counter ready to take our order. As soon as we walked in, I knew by the wonderful smells that I was going to be walking out happy and full. Bon Banh Mi didn't disappoint. Being first-timers, we didn't know what to order but were helped by some local patrons as well as the employees and decided on the Five-Spice Pork sandwich for me, the Red Curry Beef sandwich for our son and the Ginger Lemongrass Chicken salad for my wife. My nine-year old had a bit of a hard time with the sandwich (it's big) so we ended up also ordering a Five-Spice Pork taco for him that he was able to handle. Overall, our lunch was fantastic. Fresh ingredients, quick service and great overall experience. Now my only problem is that it's 600 miles away and I'm already craving another one.

Bon Bang Mi is definitely a favorite place of mine. This isn't necessarily the place you would go if you want to dine in with a large group of people because they have limited counter seating but that's not something you count against this type of business. You come here for lunch when you are working nearby or for to go orders. Their menu is limited buy for what they do they do it really well. I would easily recommend the five spice pork. The five spice pork is cooked well and seasoned to perfection. They do the simple toppings that you can either get as a sandwich, salad or a taco. They have a great compliment of hot sauces and assorted sauces for all those people familiar with Vietnamese food(fish sauce and nuoc mam). They have a nice assortment of random sodas that are worth trying. Its a very casual place and the service has always been friendly and timely. They do daily specials and at the time of this review I am munching on a Tameron shrimp sandwich which is great. The portions are filling and the average cost is about 8.75 for a sandwich. This isn't subway, this is amazing food at a low cost. If you go there you will give this place a 4 or 5 review for the food. For a quick lunch place or Togo place I would not knock this place for its low key charm. Amazing Vietnamese sandwiches is in Charleston and its spelt Bon Banh Mi, stay classy Charleston and check this place out. For 5 stars I wish there was

I never knew tacos were a Vietnamese thing, but I am definitely not complaining! In fact, the tacos are so fresh and delicious that they are the only menu items I have ever actually tried here. I once initially ordered a baguette (which I'm sure would have been excellent), but then changed my order in a panic to three tacos. Phew. I was very glad I did so, though I do hope to try that baguette someday in the future... First off, let's talk about the layout. The shop is very small and cozy, and located in a semi-random spot on Spring Street. There is seating along the bar area (where the food is prepared) and at the front windows that face Spring Street (this is the clutch seating where you get beamed on by sun rays and get to watch peeps walking down the street). Counter and table tops are adorned with hot sauces, soy sauces, and most importantly, huge industrial sized bottles of Sriracha. The menu is simple as it features only three types of dishes: tacos, banh mi (the baguette), and salads. Possible fillings for your choice of dish include ginger lemongrass chicken, five spice tofu, five spice pork, red curry beef, and a couple other choices. The bottom line is the menu is simple but delicious. As for the tacos (again, the only dish that I've had here), they are packed to the brim and mouthwateringly good! They are so packed that they come wrapped in not one, but two corn tortillas. Inside of the soft corn shelled goodness, your filling of choice is bathed in basil, cilantro, shallots, and a sriracha lime cream sauce. The ingredients are clearly fresh and it shows in the taste. Aside from the small size of this joint (which functions as both a positive and a negative), another more true negative is the fact that the food is somewhat pricey. I think three tacos run you something like $10.75 which is a bit steep. However, they are packed and definitely leave you full. All in all, this is definitely a great spot to grab a quick bite for lunch or dinner. Added bonuses also include a very friendly staff and a decent (albeit small) selection of craft beers and ciders.

Been here 2x now. Got the lemongrass chicken salad both times. The first time, I loved it! The second time it had way, way too much cilantro in it and not enough chicken. I was not a fan. My boyfriend's five spice pork banh mi was amazing though. That's definitely what I'll get next time. If you're not a big fan of cilantro, be sure to tell them when you order!

Lemongrass chicken tacos were divine. Limited seating (stools), so I was glad that we were staying nearby - just don't forget the rooster sauce!

This place is great! The lemongrass chicken is my favorite - as a sandwich or a salad! I also love that they deliver above the crosstown. Other places should be as kind. The owners are super awesome and have a passion for anything they do. We've been supporting them since the idea started as just a vendor at the Farmer's Market. The attention to detail and level of deliciousness is just the same now as it was then - and that's a great thing! Keep up the good work!

One of the BEST tacos I've ever had! I know - its a Banh Mi place... BUT! The pulled beer taco -- the soft warm embrace of the shell, around a heaping portion of beef, sauce, fresh herbs............. I went once when I first arrived in the area. I went back TWICE MORE in two days, just to get tacos. Seriously. Do your mouth and your tummy a favor and stop in!

  • Taylor N.

This place is horrible. First of all, they ran out of the meat we wanted so we had to limit the amount of banh mi (a blessing in disguise), and the wait was so long. It took them forever to make the banh mi. It was hard to determine which was which. There was no flavor, except salt. It was really salty!! On top of that, it was $9 each, which is really pricey. By far the worst banh mi ever!!!

My girlfriend and I love this place. We always get ours delivered (they have free delivery on the peninsula through QuickFoxes). I always get the spiced pork Bahn Mi and it is consistently good. I'll occasionally get a taco or two and they're equally good. The tacos are always satisfyingly packed to the brim with fillings. My girlfriend gets the chicken Bahn Mi and loves it. It's one of the few restaurants I can get her to eat ate a couple of times a month. This place is 5 stars.

We had their salad topped with Ginger Chicken and it was flavorful and delicious. We didn't want a sandwich but next time will go for the tacos. Always love the fresh, bright flavors of Vietnamese food and enjoyed this clean, bright, tiny spot.

I like eating something I can feel good about. Bon banh mi serves delicious culturally intriguing healthy food that does not dissapoint, neither in size or quality. This is a great place to spend under $10 & get a ton of veggies and meat. What a value for the money over all! The staff is also so friendly. The truck or the restaurant hosts smiling helpful sweet young people. They even will let you sample something if your unsure & they let my puppy sleep on the window sill inside. So laid back! This is a must try!

We are on a foodie trip to Charleston and this was our fist stop. Parking is horrible, but everything is fantastic! We ate dinner on a Sunday and the very nice guy at the counter said parking is not really enforced on Sunday. We parked on the street, but he said you can pull into the alley next to the building and find some parking behind. Enough about parking...the food...yummmmm!! We got the five spice tofu sandwich and the lemongrass chicken salad with the garlic ginger dressing. Both were wonderful, flavorful, freshly made masterpieces! We decided to go ahead and try two of the tacos, red curry shortrib and five spice pork. Also great! They have changed their hours and now close at 5 on Sunday. We arrived around 4:30 and people continued to trickle in. The employees were very nice and accommodating to the last minute arrivals. Simple menu, fresh food, wonderful flavors, reasonable prices....what more can you ask for?!

I really, really like Bon Bahn Mi. There are plenty of places in Charleston serving bahn mi, but they've really nailed (a version) of it here. BBM is a tiny restaurant on Spring Street, down the road from Xia Bao Biscuit, and near the Crosstown. There are a few counters where you can sit, but it isn't really designed to eat in. You can order your choice of protein (pork, chicken, tofu, pate) on a sandwich, taco, or salad. I always get the sandwich, and I've tried the chicken and the pork. Both are tremendous - the chicken is moist and flavorful, and the pork is ground up and seasoned with five spice - it is literally exploding with flavor. The sandwich is topped with shallot, basil, pickled carrots, and pickled daikon radish. Served on excellent toasty French bread, this sandwich is killer. I find it adequate for a meal and a half, or a pretty substantial lunch. BBM doesn't serve anything other than Bahn Mi, so no sides here. You know the history of Bahn Mi, right? Like curry, it is the ultimate food of European imperialism: when the French came to southeast Asia, in addition to all the many bad things they did, through a combination of French and southeast Asian cultures, they produced this sandwich. The traditional way to eat it is with pate - theirs is a thick country pate, not the ground up spreadable stuff. I'll try that next time.

Bon Banh Mi has quickly become my favorite lunch spot. The tacos are made with delicious and fresh ingredients. I get a beef, chicken and pork taco every time. The atmosphere is comfortable and fun with simply decor and a big open window to people watch while you eat.

Very tasty Banh Mi. I love the fact that they offer it in 3 formats (traditional sandwich, salad, and taco) and with 5 types of "meats" (including tofu). Tried both the salad and sandwich, both with pork (asked for chicken with the salad, but I guess my wish was not granted). The bread was soft and delicious if a little unexpected. All of the veggies were awesome. I might have given more stars if my order was correct.

Very cute. Awesome service. Delicious food. What more could I really ask for?

Small menu, big flavor. I had the ginger lemongrass chicken banh mi and it was very very delicious. My friends had the tofu tacos, red curry beef tacos, and pate and canadian ham bahn mi and said they were all amazing. If you like a little more spice with your sandwich/tacos then be sure to try their variety of hot sauces. The shop only has a few chairs/tables inside so I would recommend getting your food to go. They also have craft beers and a variety of non-alcoholic drinks available.

  • Uday G.

Delicious, fresh "fast" food. I had the pork banh mi and it was perfectly seasoned...I liked the option of being able to add more nuoc mum and sriracha. My wife and one kid loved the tacos. My other daughter enjoyed the lemongrass chicken on a salad. And finally my youngest had the red curry tofu on bread and he was happy. We will be back!

Wow! So hard to beat this incredibly delightful small spot outside of downtown Charleston. We were driving by with our 3 kids after arriving from the airport and thanks to Yelp stopped and met Jason one of the owners. We had the freshest roll from a local bakery filled with crunchy carrots, cucumbers. daikon and anise scented basil and bright cilantro. Top with your choice of pate and ham, five spice pork or red beef curry. Our 10 year old almost fell out of his seat after taking a bite he was so happy. The 5 types of hot sauce (our favorite Shark Sciracha) and amazing selection of craft beers (try the local WestBrook Thai white) were the icing on top. Sit on the stools overlooking the making. If you are on a carb diet try the same thing over a salad.

  • Erin S.

Love this place. The red curry beef is my favorite. Tried the tacos recently, and they were a great change from the usual sandwich. Two tacos was plenty filling and with a good beer (Dogfishhead IPA) I was quite happy.

In Seattle, banh mi sandwiches are about $3, so this place was a little pricier than normal for me. But it was the PERFECT post-plane ride food, fresh and flavorful. Great tofu as well. If you're done with Southern food, guide yourself here!

When the farmers market is happening downtown these guys set up shop and serve up deliciousness. Glad to see they are available year round when I need a fix :)

Worst Bon Mi I've ever had anywhere. I've had ok ones in NY, good ones in SF, DC, NO and Hanoi, but this one had no resemblance to any I've had anywhere. Tasted awful and had few of the essential ingredients of a Banh Mi. Seemed almost fraudulent. What are all these positive Yelp reviews about? A fixed game? Embarrassing!

  • Amanda W.

My husband and I ate lunch here. I ordered the 5 spice pork sandwich. The sandwich was plentiful, but it was mostly vegetables. The pickled carrots was probably my favorite component. I didn't care for the flavor of the pork. My husband ordered the red curry beef tacos, which is devoured before I could grab a bite. Overall, it was a fun experience.

It's been years since I lived in Charleston, but I come back to visit a lot, and I'm always thrilled to see new restaurants. This was an especially exciting find because there have been so few good ethnic/non-European options in Charleston. The Bahn Mi here are excellent. Great place for a quick lunch. I recommend the red curry beef tacos. Perfect combination of flavors.

    (5)
  • Jennifer B.

Charleston really needs more diversity, so I appreciate anyone who goes out on a limb to serve something other than low country cuisine. We tried the pork and lemongrass chicken banh mis. If I had one recommendation, it would be to find a sturdier bread/baguette, as our sandwich got a little soggy in the last bites. Next time I'm going to try their taco version of the banh mi.

    (4)
  • RACHNA P.

This place is a really cool small chilled place for lunch. The sandwiches are tasty. I got the red curry tofu and my husband got the lemongrass chicken. They both very good. I like the bread too. I just needed a little bit more flavor. But if I'm in the area, I would definitely go back.

  • Ann C.

Bon Banh Mi is the American-fusion take on traditional Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwiches. Anyone familiar with Banh Mi sandwiches from the west coast or major cities might find these sandwiches ridiculously overpriced and the meat choices less-than traditional. I'm able to get a traditional pork banh mi sandwich in Houston for around $3. I had sticker shock seeing a $9 Banh Mi. That being said, I really enjoyed the pork sandwich. They also offer taco and salad options, which are great for the carbophobes and I look forward to trying. Since there aren't many (or any?) other Banh Mi options in Charleston, I'll definitely be back when I get a Banh Mi craving.

    (4)
  • Dan O.

Best Bahn Mi in town. The five spiced pork is my favorite. Hopefully they'll expand the menu with future delicious creations!

  • Pres P.

A quality and consistent spot! It really does not get any better than Bon Banh Mi. I go at least 1-2 times per week and this spot always delivers! My favorite meat is the pork but they are all very good. They have a great selection of local craft beers to boot. Definitely a go-to on the peninsula!

New York Times just labeled 2012 the year of Asian Hipster Cuisine, and with Banh Mi Sandwiches (those Vietnamese sandwiches) proliferating like polos on King Street, (there are at least 5 places with it on the menu now, even Blind Tiger Pub).. this is not a surprise. But this place is awesome! If you're looking for something more traditional, get the pate and ham one, otherwise you'll be surprised if you're looking for something you've seen before. Not super-cheap, but high quality, high energy spot. Go here on off hours to find it less busy (or call ahead, which alot of people seem to do!)

    (4)
  • Wesley C.

The subway of the Banh Mi sandwich, pick your own meat! This is a small place down the street from MUSC, not much seating, but the staff and other patrons were all really friendly. I had the red curry beef with my Banh Mi. The bread had a great crunch to it, but was still soft and easy eat. All the flavor of the pickled veggies and cilantro mixed perfectly with the curry beef and the chili mayo. I wish it was a touch spicier and there are probably places that get closer to the traditional Banh Mi, but for 9 bucks on a hot summer day with a friend, it was awesome!

  • Kathy S.

It's hard to find good ethnic cuisine in a town like Charleston, however this place is where I go when I need Vietnamese flavors. I used to live near a Vietnamese community and I LIKED the banh mi I had there, but I LOVE this. They have daily specials but I always come back for the banh mi. I have to say, it is a little odd to have good quality Asian food served to me by non-Asians, but they do it so well.

    (5)
  • Nikesh P.

I love this place! Been here a few times, am lucky enough to live within walking distance. Have tried multiple items on their menu, and love every single one of them! They have great daily specials, and all of the ones I have tried have all been delicious. Most recently I got the tamarind shrimp which was so good. They make a great banh mi sandwich here, and for that alone I would recommend it, but they also have tacos which are very tasty. And they have a nice selection of beers and other unique drinks. Overall, their menu is not very extensive but everything they do make, they make very well. I highly recommend this place!

Bar none the three sandwiches I had were fantastic! 5 spice pork was a must have. The ginger lemon grass chick was so flavorful. And the egg and Canadian ham would hit any brunch craving.

I discovered banh mi sandwiches years ago during my travel for work and have been enjoying them across the country. I was absolutely thrilled to find Bon Banh Mi one afternoon on my drive through downtown. The restaurant is clean, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the food is FANTASTIC! I usually get a Five Spice Pork Banh Mi with the delicious jasmine tea for lunch or dinner but have recently forced myself to try other things and can say that the Red Curry Beef sandwich is incredible, too. They offer specials on drinks - they have a nice beer selection. For my friends downtown, they even offer delivery. Because the space in the restaurant is limited, I frequently call in my order and pick it up but whether you're eating in or taking out, it's a fantastic light meal.

    (5)
  • Mike M.

Small hole in the wall sandwich place with amazing food. I had the pate sandwich and my wife had the lemon grass sandwich. Both were amazing. My only real complaint is the price. I know its downtown and all, but $9 for a sandwich is a bit much.

    (5)
  • Rich G.

Just ordered to-go and the person who answered the phone was very courteous and not in a rush to close at 9 pm. Add on... I ate the best Banh Mi sandwich I have eaten anywhere. I ordered the five spice pork. The spice on the pork was great and not overwhelming. The sandwich was layered perfectly with fresh ingredients of cucumber, cilantro, carrots, asian veggies, pork and a collection of 3 sauces you can get from there. Great little sandwich shop. Can't wait to return.

    (5)
  • Britton Y.

On a rainy day like this, they already had my vote since they offered delivery to my office downtown. I ordered 2 tacos which was a better price than a sandwich and my main reason for going with the tacos. The red curry beef was delicious! I highly recommend that one. The tacos were packed full of veggies and flavor. The other one I got was the five spiced pork. It was my least favorite of the two. It wasn't bad, but the ground pork wasn't what I had pictured. Overall, I will definitely order from here again!

It's always a treat to find a tasty vegetarian Bahn Mi and Bon Banh Mi specializes in them. It was our first night visiting Charleston and we were hungry. Bon Banh Mi hit the spot and seriously impressed us. We will be back!

OMG! Yummy yummy sandwiches! And we just happened to stumble on the place during HAPPY HOUR on a Friday between 5-7pm when SANDWICHES ARE $4 AND TACOS ARE $2!!! We split a 5-spice pork sandwich by staff recommendation and she was spot on! Fresh crunchy veggies paired with flavorful, savory ground pork. My only complaint was that it took a long time to make a simple sandwich. (10 min?) Cashier was friendly. Great view of . . . well, traffic . . . but my toddler LOVED watching buses and trucks go by from enormous window. It's a tiny place with just bar-style seating. I highly recommend trying it out!

Just got in to town for business - checked in to the hotel nearby - checked in to Yelp to see what's great nearby - and found this gem! I couldn't choose which meat - so ended up with the pick 3 tacos and enjoyed one each - lemongrass chicken, five spice pork and red curry beef. AMAZING! Can't wait to go back for lunch tomorrow!

After arriving late in Charleston from the northeast, this is the first place my wife and I went for food. The tofu Banh Mi's were delicious. They absolutely hit the spot. Highly recommended for a quick, easy, and delicious dinner.

Ive never had Bahn Mi. I wanted to try something different today and I'm glad I did. I had the 5 spice pork sandwich... sooo fresh tasting, the baguette was perfect. I liked it. I also tried the summer rolls and black jasmine sweet tea. The tea packs a lot of flavor. Be prepared. It seams like it would be a refreshing treat on a really hot, muggy Charleston summer day all on its own, but it was a bit much to wash my sandwich down with. As for the summer roll, my first impression was WOW that is really fresh tasting. Good to cleanse the palate. Portions were good, I would have been perfectly full with just a sandwich. It was a little pricey so it wont be an every day thing but I will def. be back. My tab was 17 and change for a sandwich, app and tea. The staff was really friendly, helpful and the place was really clean... cleanliness is a big one for me.

Visiting Charleston for work and we stopped by for a quick lunch. Great good, very inventive menu, the combination of Vietnamese and Mexican really melds well. The sky's the limit for this place.

When I told my friend that since moving to Charleston I have missed Vietnamese food and she responded, "oh, I know a great Vietnamese taco place" I thought: this is not right. But I was wrong. It's so SO right. I can only speak to the vegetarian food, but I have spent nights awake thinking about their tofu soft tacos. They also have the traditional sandwiches, but give the tacos a try. Amazing, incredible, go eat one right now! That's really all I have to say about it. Oh, and it would be nice if they'd open another location with some table seating.

    (5)
  • Roger Y.

I am addicted to the pate and ham banh mi. The bread makes the sandwich. Not much seating and the street parking can be a challenge, but get it to-go or delivered.

  • Nicole P.

I loooove Bon Banh Mi. The place itself is sweet, small and clean, and the food is badass. The 5 Spice Tofu/Pork salad or sandwich are my absolute favorite (the salads are generously sized, too!) and their Vietnamese style tacos are great if you are looking for something a little more dainty in size and price. The staff is friendly and the location is perfect for anyone living in the Cannonborough area. The only downfall to this place is that they are not open on Sundays... But alas, distance makes the heart grow fonder, right? This might be one of the few places where I am likely always in the mood to go for lunch. Thanks BBM!!!

We had the five spice pork and red curry beef sandwiches. Both were great. We went for lunch on a Sunday afternoon and it was not crowded, so we had no trouble getting a seat. I could see them getting busy on a weekday in which case you want to prepare for takeout. I wish we were locals, because this place would be one of our regulars.

    (5)
  • Michael O.

Awesome. Huge portion size AND full flavored! We have not been satisfied (taste-wise) with any other banh mi sandwiches in Charleston until visiting here. So not only is the flavor exceeding our expectations, but the sandwich was way bigger than I was ready for! My ONLY recommendation for banh mi sandwiches in Charleston. (Parking is tricky...)

  • Shonda M.

Let's just talk about their food truck! AWESOME! You should probably stalk it at the next food truck rodeo. The pulled pork sandwich is so good. It's the freshest bbq I've ever had. Crunchy vegetables on it too. Yum.

One of my favorite lunch places in Charleston, which says a lot since the options are many. Great food, very courteous staff and owner and always appreciated by the out of town guests I invite there. Personally, I always get 2 of their tacos, mixing it up based on craving (they're all great, you can't go wrong), and order their homemade iced tea. Wednesdays they serve shrimp tacos, which are pretty amazing.

What a wonderful little sandwich shop! We stopped into this place while visiting Charleston in May and were very impressed with their handcrafted sandwiches and salads. The owner shared how the 5 spice pork is made which I've duplicated with some wild boar meat and it turned out fantastic! Thanks for putting love into what you do!

Awesome sandwiches and really nice staff. Enough of a selection on the menu to have options but not so much that you're overwhelmed. Will definitely go here again when I'm back in charleston.

Excellent sandwich shop. Grabbed a beef banh mi this weekend for lunch and was impressed by the freshness of the bread and the toppings. Excellent prices and service. Need to come back for some tacos!

  • Ashley P.

Is this truly proper Vietnamese? No. Is it the best Banh Mi in Charleston. Yes, by a long shot! The sandwiches are delicious and the five spice pork is a great protein! Everything is super fresh and well balanced in flavor. We saw these guys start out at the Farmers Market, and it's great to see them open up the brick and mortar. Great little spot and a welcome addition to the food scene in Cannonborough.

Stopped by on the way out of town and picked up two tacos - lemon grass chicken and a beef. Inexpensive and delicious topped with cilantro and lots of crunchy Asian vegetables! Despite being packed, my takeout was ready very quickly! The fellow taking orders was so polite, but have to say one of the cooks was a bit of an ass to me. Whatever, the food was worth the attitude!

If you're seeking a place with a delicious and creative spin on vietnamese banh mi and more; a place populated with friendly, funny and erudite staff, this be the place! the food and home brewed black jasmine semi-sweet tea are f#@*ing addictive! other patrons are likewise interesting and engaging at this cool spot boasting impressive windows revealing a spring st scene reminiscent of a bukowski verse. Oh, and a pretty nice craft bottle selection, too. I hate to admit i eat here as often as i do and i been around; i seen things, ya know!

Absolutely the best banh mi that I have ever had. Try the red curry short rib with a fried egg on top, or if you are in a healthy mood, get the awesome salad with vietnamese pate or ginger lemongrass chicken.

Fun and hip variation on the traditional Vietnamese sandwich. We had the Red Curry Beef and Five Spice Pork sandwiches; they are full of flavor and loaded with meat. This place is perfect for a quick light lunch. A bit pricey for banh mi, but still would recommend.

Bon Banh Mi is one of the most incredible and overlooked restaurants in Charleston. Luckily I live on Spring Street so I'm able to walk just down the street to get the most incredible sandwich or tacos. I love everything about their banh mi and everyone in the restaurant is fun and friendly. The space is small but cozy and they deliver downtown which is great. Bottom line Bon Banh Mi is the best place to go when you want to eat something fresh and delicious.

oh snap, I love this place and am so excited they're in the neighborhood. The place was sparkling clean, fast and very friendly. I had the 5 spice tofu salad which was giganzorz. And a former meat eater, I miss the taste and meaty textures sometimes. The tofu hit the spot. Their viet-tacos looked freaking rad and the price was great. Killer place for gluten free people like yours truly, with lots and lots of choices. Iced tea was very tasty too. Good job guys, you'll be seeing lots of folks from notso hostel next door!

Clean, simple and fresh. Thanks for a great banh mi. Good vibes when you walk in, regardless if you have to walk in, pick up or eat in, you'll enjoy the easy meal. Cheers

The folks from Street Hero have finally opened up a brick and mortar location just off King Street and we are so glad they did. If you have had the pleasure of enjoying one of their Banh Mi's at the Charleston Farmer's Market, you now have the good fortune to enjoy these any day of the week (except Monday). The store is clean and bright and the staff was on top of it when we joined them for dinner. Everyone was engaging and passionate about what they were doing and it came through in the finished product. There is beer and wine available as well if you want to stay a while. This little sandwich bar makes it simple to enjoy the Vietnamese specialty of Banh Mi. Their menu is straight forward - choose a vehicle for delivery of amazing flavor and then choose what it will be filled/topped with. They offer salads, but we opted to sample a variety of their tacos and traditional sandwiches. The tacos are double wrapped corn tortillas griddled to a nice exterior texture. They were good, but we both felt that the corn flavor from the tortillas was a bit too prominent in the dish, robbing a little from the otherwise delicious filling. But the bread....oh man the bread. According to the owner, their rolls are baked by someone local who shall remain nameless. I would compare the rolls to the texture of a Cuban bread, thin crusty exterior and a pillowy-soft interior. I noticed when Jason was assembling our sandwiches he even pulled out the center of the roll, an often overlooked step that is so important. Both incarnations came with the same array of fresh condiments, including pickled carrots and radishes, lots of fresh cilantro and basil, spicy mayo, and a crunchy topping of fried onions. We tried their 'fillins' of country pate and ham, five spice pork, red curry beef shortrib, and ginger lemongrass chicken. The flavors of each were unique and bold, and it's nice that they offer such a range because each of these really provides a totally different experience texturally. The beef shortrib was so rich and tender, I wanted a bowl of it. The pork was very nicely spiced, but it is a ground meat so we didn't love this one as much due to the lack of structure in the sandwich. The chicken was juicy and had a great flavor, bright with lemon and ginger, but lacked the richness we love so much in a Banh Mi. Which leads us to the winner - the pate and Vietnamese ham combo was our favorite as a cohesive sandwich. This was truly a perfect Banh Mi in the classic way. If you have never had one before, I would start here to get the baseline of what this sandwich is supposed to be. All of the other variations are done very well and it is well worth your time to sample the whole gamut.

If you expect the banh mi likes Lee's sandwiches chain, you will see it is different here. The banh mi style in Bon Banh Mi is the northern Vietnamese banh mi. It tastes great but you may need to eat 2 banh mi to get full. The taco is great as well.

Have become a big fan of Banh Mi sandwiches and was very excited when my husband read about a new Charleston spot in The City Paper. After being greeted with enthusiasm, I noticed the simple menu (which I love about a place; this to me means they are focused and passionate on making that one thing great) and decided on the Five Spice Pork Banh Mi. Everything about this sandwich was great! We sat at the counter in front of the big window and enjoyed the people watching while eating our lunch. Before leaving, we had to order the Red Curry Beef Short Rib to enjoy later...boy am I glad we did! Run...don't walk and make this place a regular spot when you're looking for something DELISH and made with love!! Will def be back!!!

  • Frances N.

Awesome sandwich! I was torn between the tacos, salad, and a sandwich and I'm really glad I picked the five spice pork sandwich because the bread was delicious. I'm not a fan of corn tortillas so I would have been sad if I had picked the tacos because they're on corn tortillas. Just my personal preference. The pork has a great flavor to it and the toppings plus assortment of sauces are a perfect complement. I'm new to Bahn Mi and this was a great experience.

I first visited three weeks ago and have looked for an opportunity to return ever since. I stopped in today for Tamarind Shrimp special on Wednesday and was again blown away. If you're not a fan of sandwiches with a lot of bread (like a po'boy), don't be deterred. The banh mi rolls at this spot are perfectly soft and don't take away from the flavor of the meat. My fiance had the lemongrass chicken and was equally impressed. Quite honestly, this is a top 3 sandwich spot in Charleston. I've yet to try the tacos or salads, but I may have a hard time ever pulling myself away from their signature banh mis.

  • Robert S.

$10 dollars for a sandwich may seem a bit pricey at first but for what you get it will seem more than worth it. The sandwich is the perfect size for lunch along with a beer or tea. The ingredients meld well together, with the fresh cilantro giving it a refreshing taste.
