The food is really good. The servers also feel real, they're not rude but kind of straight up. I like it. The food is very Irish and works well. I love that it's very gay friendly. It's nice to find a place in a sea of churches and republicans. But seriously here the focus is the food. If you've never been to Ireland come here and tell everyone you've been. Get the Irish country breakfast. It's delicious with Irish bacon and sausage. 3 slaps for food (gripped and fried) 1 slap for the gay atmosphere.

Ok it's time my Blue Rose review had a re-do. My previous low-ish rating was simply because I am not a fan of the brunch on Sundays. I don't like the whole pastries and muffins plate or fixed price thing. Having learned this after several visits, I simply don't go on Sundays. Problem solved. Before all else, I have to say that the pancakes at Blue Rose are angelic; basically, you might see God while in their presence. I love them that much. The weird part is that I'm not even normally a pancakes person, but here I am, stuffing my face every Saturday morning at Blue Rose. Maybe they sully them with addictive additives? Meh, I don't care. I can't turn back now. Breakfast at Blue Rose has become a regular stop for my husband and I. There aren't many places in Charleston that you can get a plain old breakfast without overpaying for a fancy experience/dish. Sometimes you just need to let breakfast be breakfast. Blue Rose has this idea nailed and I adore it. The folks that work there are incredibly nice, sarcastic at times (which may be my favorite quality) and as others have said, treat everyone like a regular no matter their status. Definitely my favorite breakfast stop in the low country.

One of the best breakfasts I've had in Charleston, pancakes were banging, and the employees make you feel right at home with a slight touch of humor

Breakfast at Bluerose Cafe is a must. It is a great price for a tasty breakfast. I have a great time everytime we go. They also do brunch on Sunday but breakfast Mon-Sat is way better. The pancakes are delish. They have a traditional irish breakfast and homemade scones and jam. The place feels homey and the coffee is good. It is hard to find a straight up breakfast joint in Charleston that isn't trendy or pricey and this is neither of those. Bluerose is a great value! The parking lot is small so that can be a drag but it is worth it....

Such a delightful place! Maybe it's because I'm Irish maybe it's because I love small local diner's but this place made me feel at home! You don't typically find a quaint diner that is also clean and has good value and good food. A good breakfast worth coming back for. I recommend the blueberry pancakes as they were delicious! The service was on point and everyone was happy and friendly. Definitely a great way to start your day.

Great breakfast/brunch place in W. Ashley. A very close to authentic Irish Breakfast says my Irish husband! Very catering to our 2 year old and English Bulldog as well!

The only reason it's not a 5 is atmosphere. Not crazy about the location or the inside, it's a neat little spot but could be decorated better. HOWEVER; the food and service and vibe are consistently AWESOME. :) This is a lunch spot. They may offer dinner sometimes and I know they offer brunch, though I've yet to experience it. (I would be surprised if it was not AWESOME.) The Food: There are some Irish inspired dishes on there to keep with the theme of the restaurant, i.e. the Sheppard's Pie is really, really good. Think: comfort food that isn't all southern-inspired... you've got soups and sandwiches, salads and meat and potato kind of dishes. Don't get me started on their desserts. The buttermilk pie is amazing and I didn't even know I liked buttermilk pie. I might not. Unless it's from Blue Rose. The Service: The owner is always there and serves his customer's, which I think is really cool. It means he takes care of his employees AND his customers. I like that. The staff is always super friendly and it's just a very pleasant place to be- one of those "make ya feel good" kind of places. I also love that it's local! Support local business! Especially in times like these! Oh- just agreed it's "Good for Kids" on the "additional tips"- they have paper table cloths and crayons. My niece and I had a blast with that one.

Me and my husband are eternally on a mission for good breakfast/brunch spots around Charleston and decided to give Bluerose Cafe a try after reading these reviews. We were majorly disappointed. The food was mediocre. We both ordered omelets, grits, home fries, toast, etc. The basics. They were standard, not bad, but nothing to write home about either. That wasn't the disappointment. That began immediately upon being seated when we were asked what we wanted to drink and 30 min later, after finally being served, we FINALLY got our cups of coffee after reminding them again. 5 min. after that we finally got the sugar. And then had to remind them 5 min. after that for them to bring cream. All ordered upon being seated 40 min. prior. We were already done w/ the omelet when I reminded the waiter that we had asked for ketchup and hot sauce when served. TERRIBLE SERVICE!!!! The table next to us was unoccupied for the entire meal and was still not cleared from the prior patrons. We spent half the meal chasing napkins and empty creamers that kept blowing off of it (we were seated outside). We sat for 15 more min. before chasing down another waiter and asking for the check to be told, "oh, you go to the front to check out and your waiter will ring you up." WELL, that would've been nice to know since we were in a hurry to get out of there after basically being abandoned!!! I have no doubt that they were understaffed and the wait staff was probably doing the best that they could, but that was unacceptable and they really should hire some more help during busy hours!

This food is not edible! I eat French fries like they are going out of style and left the entire pile of soggy, soft, greasy, flavorless fries on the plate and finished my garden burger.

One of our regular brunch spots. The food is fabulous and I love the plate of assorted breads they bring out. The owners are really nice. My boyfriend loves the Irish Breakfast and I usually get pancakes or crepes. I always look forward to Bluerose on the weekend!
(5)Sydney G.
No where else in Charleston can you get a traditional full Irish breakfast like at Bluerose. My parents like to stop here when they come into town, because we always have great service and delicious food. Try: full irish breakfast, corned beef hash, buttermilk pie, scones, baked brie, irish potato cakes If you get the chance to talk to the owner, Denis, definitely do. He's very personable and makes you feel like you're eating in his home as a guest.
(4)Christine B.
Definitely my favorite brunch place around here. I'm not really a BRUNCH type of guy - I don't like breakfast foods that much - but this place really is above average. They make a great omelette! Service is great and it isn't so unbelievable busy that you have to wait for 5 hours (but it is busy on the weekends). I love their irish scone muffin thing or whatever it's called!

Mmm..not feeling the Sunday Brunch menu. This Sunday was my first visit to Bluerose -- a small, mostly inexpensive, causal diner. Upon entering, the fella behind the counter was pleasant and the waitress working what look like all of the tables, was very friendly and social with everyone. Cant recall her name, but she was a delight. The Sunday Brunch menu includes a host of typical southern breakfast things, a cup of coffee or tea, and a variety of breads, all for $12.50. My gf ordered the shrimp and grits, which was good! I never order shrimp and grits out because the recipe is always unnecessarily overcomplicated, taking away from the old school, simple and delicious recipe that I grew up on. A nicely seasoned brown gravy, sautéed onions, thick creamy grits, and of course an abundance of shrimp. This recipe was just that, so that is a win. I ordered the western omelet, which I didnt like. It was overly stuffed with mince sized peppers and tomatoes along with some cheddar; and totally flavorless. The potatoes that came with it also lacked flavor and were kind of dry. The breads that came with the meal, a couple of blueberry muffins, some hard biscuit like thing which I think was a scone(?), and some other bread--anyway they were all just not a good addition to the meal. Store bought, hard, stale...just a few words to describe the breads that we were given. Im guessing because we came in at the tail end of the day, we got what was left for the day perhaps? Our waitress did say upon putting the plate of breads down that this is "what we have left". Im probably going to give this place another go because I like diners and the staff was warm and inviting, but I'll skip the Sunday brunch and try lunch or dinner.

I've only been here for breakfast. They always deliver when it comes to taste. IMO they have the best corned beef hash - try that with 2 eggs over easy and you'll be set. It's very casual, and can be tight if you go on the weekends, but if your looking for a quick bite, dinner style food and good service you can't go wrong. Ohh ... A quick tip use a credit card - They always seem to struggle breaking large bills and giving change.

My family and I went here because we would always pass it by going to and from downtown Charleston SC. This place is Awesome! They have a Great Menu selection. The Customer service is Just Enough and not bothersome. The food is always hot and delicious! They are not gonna rob your wallet. Just a great atmosphere for you rather it's breakfast, or brunch. I haven't attended for dinner but if it is anything like their breakfast and lunch....oh my! 1 last thing.....although it has an Irish feel to it, they did not forget where they are. They hold true to the Charleston SC taste and feel of great food and great hospitality. Thank You BlueRose!
(4)Frank G.
Have visited before for Sunday brunch, but thought you had to get their $12.00 special. Well, I've been educated, you don't. Good Irish food. Breakfast is good, and fresh. People are very nice. Try it, you'll like it. Frank G

We stopped here last Sunday for a quick breakfast after disappointingly learning the Livelihood Cafe was closed. It was a busy Sunday brunch with a crowd, but we were quickly seated. On Sundays, the Bluerose Cafe has a prix fixe menu for about $13 that includes an assortment of pastries, coffee and your meal. I notified the server we had to get to the airport and asked him to please bring our check shortly after the food was served. After he took our orders he came back to notify me the only healthy-ish option on their menu I had ordered had run out. I reluctantly ordered scrambled eggs and bacon. The food was fine - nothing exciting - pastries were a little dry. After I finished my breakfast, I still hadn't received my check, so I went to the counter to ask for it. I waited a few minutes and paid. Then I asked for a couple of to-go boxes. The server said he'd be to our table with them quickly. I waited and waited, then walked up to the server station to get them myself. I was rudely told, "I promise your server will bring them to you!" Finally, our server brought us two boxes, with an additional bill for $0.50 to pay for them! Never, ever have I had to pay for a to-go box - anywhere! I'll never go back. If you go, I wish you a better experience. I was disappointed, because I'm always looking for dog-friendly restaurants.

Here for breakfast... This place has a really cute atmosphere and is inexpensive. I got pancakes eggs and bacon. It was good but the pancakes were undercooked and I could taste and feel the batter that was still soft.... The eggs and bacon were great. The service was friendly and chatty... Great for a breakfast atmosphere! I would come back but probably would make an omelet instead,.. Or try lunch or dinner.

Food was ok, nothing to jump off a bridge for on a cold day. Hope you hydrated prior to coming here, this place should be called Desert Rose since water is non existent. the waiter never brought or offered water.

My husband and I both thought Bluerose Cafe was delicious, and we can't wait to go back. It's a neat little gem in West Ashley and off the beaten path. Mostly local come here, and it's a lot of older people. The staff reminded me of going home to eat at grandma's house or a small town. We were the youngest people in the restaurant, where most patrons were our parents' age- but the waitress was super sweet to us and treated us so nicely! We had lunch here, and he had the fish and chips, while I had the cajun shrimp, spinach, and cheese sandwich on 9 grain bread. My sandwich was delicious- the shrimp were not too spicy and the cheese and spinach were great on the sandwich (spinach was sauteed). I also got tomatoes added to it. His fish and chips were great- the fries were hand cut and homemade, not the kind of out of a bag, and the fish was fried but not super greasy. The cole slaw was pretty good as well. Hubs also really liked the tea and he's picky about sweet tea. There is a big chalkboard of daily specials in the restaurant, including the desserts of the day. They included buttermilk pie, red velvet cake, a chocolate brownie sundae, and pumpkin cafe... along with a few that were already sold out by 1 PM. We didn't have dessert, but almost everyone was ordering them and the desserts coming out looked delicious. The portions are good but you don't leave super stuffed or with leftovers, and the desserts are big enough to share. We plan to come back for desserts soon! I wish the specials were posted online somewhere, like Facebook, but you can call and find out. We had no complaints whatsoever and will definitely be back. They made us feel like regulars even on our first visit.

BEST.PLACE.EVER. If you are looking for a homey feeling, THIS IS THE PLACE. Really pretty, charming, Best service ever. Everyone from the waitress to the owner will come to you to make you feel welcome and make sure you are having the best service/food. Food is very good, ambiance perfect. One of the best things in Charleston!

Bluerose Cafe is one of my favorite breakfast spots in Charleston. I just love a good traditional Irish Breakfast, and Bluerose comes as close as it gets here in Charleston. Their traditional Irish Breakfast is so good with 2 eggs any way you want them, breakfast potatoes, rashers, bangers, black & white pudding, and grilled tomato; the only things missing are Heinz baked beans and sauteed mushrooms & onions. I've also tried a few of their other breakfast selections which also very good as well. And I've also dropped by for lunch a couple of times too and they have a pretty good selection sandwiches and some heavier dishes that I've got to try sometime. We did do dinner here on St. Patrick's Day and it was an awesome party to the usual get drunk, drink green beer, get lost in the crowd type of parties usually associated with St. Pat's. On this night they had live Irish music with a sit-down dinner where the customer could pick between several dishes such as Corned Beef & Cabbage, Sheppard's Pie, Seafood Stew, and Stuffed Chicken to name a few; all of which were served with an appetizer, dessert, and a cold beer (or tea, soda, coffee, etc). In addition to great food, the Bluerose has a great staff working here. They have always done an excellent job at taking care of there and making us feel at home. Everytime we've visited the Bluerose they have been packed out, so I know I'm not the only one that really likes this place. My advice is if you are in the mood for breakfast you will want t get here early and avoid waiting on a table.

Look, the food's fine. Nothing to write home about, and nothing to make it worth the hideous service, but fine. The service, on the other hand, clearly has a big hard-on for the regulars, and nothing but "jokes" and the cold shoulder for everyone else. I think our waiter was actually UPSET about my friend not using that much syrup for his pancakes, awkwardly standing by the table and examining our syrup container. Add on the fact that we had to ASK for said syrup, plus butter and water, and it was altogether one of the worst experiences I've had in any Charleston restaurant. When you get better service at the Burger King on Sam Rittenberg, you know a place is straight-up garbage.

What a great brunch. I had the ham and eggs with a piece of ham that was really thick and large.
(5)Mike M.
well bluerose did it again. we went tonight we were seated right away. ordered the fried scallops. wow! delicious, well prepared and lightly breaded. we ended the meal with apple pie, you have to try it! thanks Denis, well be back!

We popped in for a late Sunday brunch, with our tiny fluffy ridiculous "dog." The outdoor patio area was just what we needed. To call the host and server 'friendly' would be an understatement. We were sat quickly and taken care of like we were family. I mean it. They brought our fluff-ball a dish of water, chatted with us, offered plenty of suggestions. What's nice is that there is a flat rate for brunch, which includes coffee, drinks, muffins and bread with honey butter and your entree. Pretty damn good. We both got shrimp and grits. Grits were fluffy and light, portions were filling, but not wasteful. Really well seasoned, not overcooked or over-salted, which is easy to do. Cleaned the plate. Then the Irish chef (and owner, possibly?) Dennis came out, shook our hands and checked on our meal. We chatted with him for several minutes. Dennis had plenty of regulars to say 'hello' to, and that speaks for itself. The menu has several traditional Irish dishes that I look forward to trying. So glad we found our happy brunch place.

Went in for a late lunch, tried the fish and chips. The fish was flaky Cod that was moist and the batter was thin and well seasoned. The chips were hand cut fries that were spot on. Even the coleslaw was good, not too much mayo and nice and crispy. The desserts that were coming out looked great but I had little room after devouring my fish and chips. Service was fantastic with recommendations from the server helping us on our choices. I would recommend this place to a friend and my wife and I plan on going back soon.

Although I recently went here for the first time, this has become one of my favorite breakfast spots in Charleston. The staff is ridiculously friendly, and you are considered a "regular" from the moment you walk in the door. Their prices are very affordable and the food is very consistent - all that you could ask for in a breakfast place. They also have an outdoor patio for seating when the weather is nice. Protip: Order the pancakes. You will not regret it. Some of the best in town!
(5)Nicole R.
Wow! New year's brunch! This will be regular spot from now on. Amazing shrimp and grits and the staff hilarious and wonderful.
(5)Eugenia F.
Ordered the crab cake sandwich. Sandwich advertised as "hot" arrived cold. Additionally, the "crab" cake was mostly breading with just a little crab meat added in. The remoulade sauce served with it was definitely unremarkable. Will not return.
(1)Jennifer N.
For a $12 brunch, I got the crab/spinach omelette with cheese with homefries. And that's all I got. I'm sorry to say there was absolutely no flavor. Just crab from the can with cheese, in a beautifully done spinach omelette. Honey got corned beef and hash and liked it okay. Brunch comes with a variety pastry plate, of 5 options. Some were commercial, some were homemade. Service was spot on, and there seemed to be many happy visitors. With so many other places to go, we won't be back, but try it yourself, and prove me wrong.
(2)Andie C.
We went on a Sunday morning. I did not realize they had a special Sunday brunch menu that differed from their typical breakfast menu. I had a western omelet (made with egg whites) and the grits. It wasn't anything special. My husband had the irish potato cakes. They were delicious and he really enjoyed them. My aunt had the corned beef hash, and said it was the best they ever had. My uncle had the spinach and crab omelet. He didn't really say much about it. One thing the three of them had in common was the early morning potatoes as a side. Nobody liked them. They were greasy and flavorless. We recommend the grits as a side instead. They served us a plate of breads to start out with. Some were okay. It had small slices of a blueberry or cranberry bread, a scone, a blueberry muffin, and a danish. I am not sure if they are homemade. They tasted liked frozen ones from the store. Many of them were very dry, and didn't taste fresh. My uncle asked for wheat toast to go with his breakfast and they didn't have it. Seems like a mom and pop/family-owned kinda place. Our service was okay. Took her a little while to bring us things we asked for, and the place wasn't even packed. Overall, I am glad we tried it, but we will probably not return for brunch. We may try lunch or dinner sometime. I thought it was pretty pricey ($11.95/entree) for what you actually got.
(2)Nicole N.
The service got off to a slow start but once the waitress greeted us we were in good hands. The blueberry pancakes were excellent and the eggs cooked perfectly. I'd come back another time to try their dinner selections.
(4)Michael T.
Denis introduced me to Shepard's pie in college, and I'm very excited to see it as a featured menu item.
(5)Leonard M.
Went here with a friend for brunch and was very impressed. The food was reasonable priced, the service prompt, and the experience for my first time visiting was worthy of me returning again and again.
(4)M B.
The breads that were served came from Sysco food systems, prepacked too sweet, the Irish tea was just cheap Lipton rip off, the food was mediocre and over priced. Nothing memorable or good. Greasey, tasteless and poor quality products. The service was good and positive, but get a clue! Hardly Irish: basically cheap quality food served worse than I would at home. SKIP!!! this save your money and make your own food at home. Another SAD SAD excuse for a restraunt in a culinary capital.
(1)Cat C.
Comforting and old school. Breakfast is sweet. Shows up cold sometimes but the staff makes up for it. The breakfast breads are a little dry... but on whole lovely.

Been in lots of time for Breakfast. The West of Ashley is the BEST. W/ the sausage and potatoes. Best for the $.
