I have been wanting to try this place for a very very long time, and we were finally able to get an afternoon where we could try it out. Since then, this has become my "go-to" place for Mexican. Its a bit of a drive for me - with it being on Daniels Island and all, but when you want fantabulous food, sometimes you have to travel to get there. First off, the atmosphere and ambiance is not like the usual cheesy mexi restaurants. Brightly lit, open seating, lots of windows to let the sun in. Up to date and really nice decor. The bar is really an interesting 'center piece' to the place. Prompt seating and service from the servers who are super friendly and great at recommending some really fabulous dishes. We ordered a pitcher of margaritas, which were delicious. Not a lot of alcohol in them, not sure if that is bc it was a pitcher on special, or if all of them are like that. Will update on that next time we go back. (Cause we are definitely going back). You get the usual salsa and chips to munch on, we also got an order of guacamole - which was wow - super delicious. I wanted to lick the bowl !! We were greatly intrigued while looking through the menu - so much to choose from, almost to the point of being overwhelmed with the choices. It was nice to see great authentic Mexican dishes that were not "order by number", we finally settled on our entrees of Shrimp Diablo and Seafood Enchiladas. We were both blown away with how fresh and flavorful everything was. The Shrimp Diablo was amazing! Not too spicy, not too bland. Perfect! The Seafood Enchilada was just as wonderful! Full of plump, fresh shrimp and scallops. Not drowned in cheese and sauce, everything was honestly just perfect. I posted pics on facebook of our dinner entrees, and had a bunch of people comment, asking where the mouth watering food was located because they wanted to try it out. So many, in fact that I have a 8-10 person dinner group going there this week to try it out!!

We were in town visiting family from Chicago, and had a great time. We had a party of 7 and no one left hungry. Definitely a benefit to dine during "happy hour", which was I think 4-8 pm. Margarita pitchers for $14, well worth it. Everything came with great portion size, so that was great. When we are back, we will be back for sure. Now for the reasoning for 3 stars. We waiting almost 10 minutes to be seated with only half of the restaurant occupied. Aside from the server taking our order and then bringing us our check, I think he made it to our table twice. Maybe it's just me, but you should never hear the slurp of the straw in a total empty glass. Service is almost just as important as the quality of the food.

I was pleasantly surprised with the quality and freshness of Agave's. I went for lunch and sat on the outside patio. The service was good. Lunch prices were around $8 and they had a nice variety but not the big book menu like at other Mexican restaurants. The food was fresh and worth the price. I would go back anytime!

Great Mexican food for Charleston. I was born and raised in Texas, so it's been hard for me to find a Texas-comparable Mexican restaurant in the area. I've had their fajitas, tamales, and street-style tacos and each dish was good. They also make yummy margaritas, if you have time to have a drink or three. The service is always wonderful and they are very quick with the refills on the chips and salsa (I eat two baskets of chips and two bowls of salsa to myself). If you're looking for decent Mexican food, which has otherwise been very hard to find in Charleston, you need to go here!

Agaves is an upped scale version of your normal Mexican place found all around the low country. My wife and I drove over for lunch a few days ago. Lets start with something almost all of these restaurants give you, chips and salsa. The salsa had a good taste, but our chips were a little on the stale side. I decided to go with the lunch fajitas, it gave me a good sampling of different things Agave's offers. I found the fajitas lacking a lot of seasoning. The chicken was fairly bland. The dish game with a guacamole salad. However, the guacamole was more like a chunk of avocado that tasted unripe. When everything was put together in a warm tortilla the flavors were not bad. Overall 3 starts for the food, not something I would drive all the way to Daniel Island for, but I have had worse. While the food was ok, the service was very lacking. It felt like we were put in a corner and just left there. After getting our orders and drinks we really were not checked on until we flagged the server down to get refills on salsa and drinks. Overall I think I would just stick to some Mexican restaurants closer to my house.

Agave is a vast ... vast ... improvement over the previous residents. I'm happy to write: Daniel Island now has a decent Mexican spot. Decor - very well done. If you happen to be a football fan, you'll definitely enjoy the televised games. Service - very good. Our waiter was attentive and managed a table of 9 with ease. Food - better than average. My steak burrito was tasty, but the rice was bland. I was there for lunch, and will happily return.

Having wanted to come here since they opened about a year ago, I was disappointed overall by our experience. For starters, the dining room of Agave's is designed in a very contemporary and interesting way (especially around the bar). I liked the feel of the place a lot. There was also some outdoor seating on the patio which was cool although we ended up sitting inside. The food, however, was a mixed bag. My dad, for instance, found his meal very bland (especially compared to a Mexican restaurant in West Ashley that is our typical go to for Mexican). The chips were ok (a little thicker than I prefer) but the salsa was extremely weak and uninteresting. I actually did like my Seafood Chimichanga (with grilled shrimp, scallops, green peppers, and onions). As sides for that, I ordered Choro Beans (awesome) and also Mexican potatoes (very bland - actually looked better on the plate than it actually was). My Horni Margarita (with Triple Sec, a splash of cranberry juice, and a few other ingredients) was really good as well. As far as our waiter goes, we haven't had someone as inattentive as him in a really long time. We eventually would get what we wanted (i.e. a refill, the check) but only after long periods of time had elapsed. He also seemed insincere and hurried. Admittedly, it didn't help that we were seated at one of the furthest tables around a corner but that shouldn't excuse the terrible service we received the entire time. All in all, I'm not sure if I'll ever go back there after tonight's disappointments.

Very good Mexican food. Great atmosphere and friendly service. Nice bar and an upbeat crowd. Decent prices and great selection. This is the only Mexican on DI but thats ok because it is great.

Probably one of the best mexican restaurants in the area. The restaurant is decorated beautifully with all the latest and greatest in decor. The service was perfect and the prices are great! You'll get an awesome margarita here and the chips and salsa are a winner. The Texanas Fajitas are the best I've had anywhere. It's a combo of shrimp, steak and chicken. A BIG WINNER. I'm just disappointed in the enchiladas and burritos - I feel they could be better. Defiantly worth the trip!

Agave's has quickly become my go to spot for Mexican food; after all it is the only Mexican restaurant on Daniel Island. The food at Agave's is comparable to most decent Mexican restaurants and the prices are decent, unlike other restaurants here on the island. So far I've tried their taco salad, steak fajitas, fajita quesadillas, and of course queso dip; my favorites being the queso dip and fajita quesadilla. Agave's has the best prices on the island when it comes to drinks; they make a decent margarita and have an OK selection of beer on tap and in the bottle. It's a great place for happy hour to grab a brew with chips, salsa, and queso with a group of friends. The service here is pretty good; the bartenders and servers have always been super friendly and helpful.

Agave does a truly fantastic job of not screwing up shrimp tacos. I really mean that. I don't know why it is such a challenge for restauranteurs to avoid over cooking them, but Agave's shrimp tacos are just this side of heaven. They did, however, overcook my kid's chicken, but promptly fixed that order, although he really did not give a damn - never does. Value. This place has it. Surprisingly cheap for a Daniel Island restaurant. Very respectable tequila menu including anejo varieties...I would like to see more cocktails offered. Finally, the chips are light and crispy. It is hard to find chips this good. I'll gripe for a moment on the lime that came with my meal. It was NOT juicy. If you are not slicing a wedge for a beverage, there is a better way....Realizing this is akin to complaining about a pickle spear, I'll just direct you to a site that explains how to slice limes for maximal juice: m.imgur.com/0bCG3

Better than average Mexican fare. Great margaritas, chips were a little stale. Guacamole was EXCELLENT. I had their poblano enchiladas which was one cheese, one chicken, and one beef enchilada covered with a mole sauce. This was actually VERY good. Last time I had one of their combo's and that was just OK. Wife had some beef fajitas or similar item both times and that was also only OK. Still looking for that GREAT mexican/tex-mex restaurant in the area. However, I will say, if I am back on DI for dinner I will try to come back here. But I will not come here from MTP just to eat here.

Daniel Island needed this. Less uppity than the restaurants around and just the right price for a decent place out here... that is if Subway, Quiznos or Public sandwiches isn't what you're wanting for a decent price. Fajitas were spot on. And Chips are easy to screw up, but they weren't here; hot, crispy and a hint of salt.

Awesome Mexican food. I stopped by Agave's while looking at properties on Daniel Island. I was very impressed by the friendly service and delicious fajitas. I'll definitely come here again... Probably next weekend. :)

Last night High-Maintenance and I went to a little social get together at Algarve. There were about 50 people there-- we were taken care right away with drinks and snacks. I have no idea how our waiter remembered who ordered what drink but even though my wife moved to the other side of the room we got what we ordered! No bill, right now he said-- no problem the server said-- we'll take care of it when you're done-- and at the end of the gathering they got it exactly right for everyone! We were so impressed with the service that we decided to stay for dinner. It was a great decision. They found a nice quiet table for us (one person has a hearing disability). One in the party is a squeamish eater-- our waiter made suggestions and explained the choices and options. High Maintenance and I had the Camarones A La Diablo-- perfectly spiced and a very generous amount of shrimps. Patty Cake had one of her 'favs'--Rib Eye Steak Rancheros-- well presented-- sizzling on an iron plate with a great side salad. John John had the Molcajete and loved every bite. The "Squeamish One" enjoyed the Algave Chicken Salad. Everything came out together-- with four waiters making a 'grand' presentation. The 'gals' reported Margaritaville was in good order and the 'guys' reported icy-cold Dos-Equis all around. When the bill came there was a nice surprise-- each entere was only $12.25 or less. Algarve is a 'Keeper' by every measure! The Service was Tops! The Food and Drink Great! Fun Atmosphere-- Just Go and Enjoy!

I am all about some Mexican food- so when I saw this was close by an event we were at, I knew I had to try it. The menu was small but had a lot of options! Everything seemed fairly cheap- which I am a-ok with! The chips and salsa you receive when you sit down- decent. I've had much better salsa, but it was still pretty good. The chips were super hot and fresh- yum. My husband had a burrito, I had a cheese & bean quesadilla and another guest in our party had the queso. The quesadilla was so delicious! The wrap itself tasted so fresh and I love that! My husband's burrito looked pretty fantastic, but he said the sauce was a bit bland. The queso was fantastic. (The queso was the most expensive thing on our bill and the smallest amount of food- but that's okay. I will never deny myself some queso!!) I might try this place again in the future for lunch, as it close to my office.

This place BLOWS! ONLY reason I even gave 2 stars is bc service was great. bartender was warm, friendly, and helpful. There's even a mariachi band ... and they sound good!!The menu, however, not so much. quality of the bar ingredients (mixers and house tequila) = gross...i had to pretend my strawberry margarita was cherry flavored in order to get it down. The shrimp I ordered were perfectly grilled; but then smothered in the most generic tasting sauce...and the chorizo was apparently chopped patty sausage -- also bland and completely lacking in chorizo salty deliciousness. I really wamted to give this place a better rating, but I can't. SEEK MEXICAN ELSEWHERE!

Service was extremely slow when I needed to pay my tab, waiter disappeared after taking my finished plate. Food was ok, carnitas were not marinated enough. The quesadilla rellenas were bland. The lunch menu is very limited. I would suggest Carmen y Juan's over them any day

A great new edition to Daniel Island! Agave's is an upscale Mexican restaurant with affordable prices. Just opened up on the 5th of November. It's colorfully decorated and has a nice bar area and plenty of seating. The bar area had 2 flat panel TVs with sporting events on. A great menu - my wife had a classic margarita and I had a Dos Equis on tap. The margarita had fresh ingredients and was excellent. They had about 4 beers on tap and a decent selection in bottles. My wife had a chicken quesadilla and I had the carnitas. Plenty of other delicious looking items on the menu as well. Service was very good - friendly staff. Looks like they'll also have an outdoor seating area although it's not completed yet. We'll be back!

This only is getting one star and it's because the food was delicious. The service here is totally non existent!!! It was just two of us on a Sunday evening. The restaurant was maybe half full... However no one at the hostess stand greeting guests. After 5 minutes and a line behind us we eyed down the bartender for assistance in getting the hostess. He was annoyed to say the least. Finally seated and brought out complementary chips and salsa by I think the only person actually working and showing care for the customers. So then we wait again for the waiter to greet us and take out order. 20 minutes. When he did finally show no apology, heck not even hi. It was just "are you ready to order"? The food did come quickly and both my meal of the burritos Mexicano and my boyfriends meal was great. However no drink refill offered. No check onus to see if the food was ok or if we needed anything. It took forever to get our bill once he did finally come by. Extremely disappointing dining experience.

Have been in search of good Mexican since I moved to Charleston...so me and my best bud... wandered into Agave for lunch today...they were fairly busy...we were seated quickly and our waiter was over the top GREAT!!! ( a sweet soul from Coumbia) the service was way better than the food... We both had Chicken fajitas ... they were fresh...portions were small...and it was not as good as I was hoping for...(bland) the refried beans were okay~ I will try again just to enjoy the waiter...

Agave's is a major upgrade from the mexi joint that formerly held this space, and they made some significant changes to the layout of the restaurant and the menu itself. The new space is really nice, with a big bar and dining area so there is tons of space for patrons. For the most part I am happy with the restaurant and they have the staple giant draft beers, chips and salsa, and other menu items that are often celebrated at these types of restaurants. I love Chili Colorado and always get it whenever offered at a Mexican restaurant. However, their version did not meet my expectations. For those who are not familiar, Chili Colorado is a traditional dish of beef cooked in a red chili sauce. The sauce is the star of the dish, but sadly what I received struck me more of a tomato based sauce and it was rather mild. My taste buds were seeking that strong chili flavor I love so much, but what I received fell very short of that expectation. I had a good time there, and most people would probably enjoy it very much. I'm just the kind of guy that goes for the traditional menu items over the standard hits like enchiladas, quesadillas and burritos and in that regard they did not do it for me.

The Agave team put on a great show tonight for Cinco De Mayo. It's was busy, as to be expected, but they had an outdoor tent and singers and bar. We sat inside, had beef tacos -- 3 for $10, Yummy in a awesome Taco Bell kind of way. tried Bud Light lime for the first time. Not bad. Good drink selection and a fun group to chat with. We'll go back on a night when it's not so busy and do a more thorough review. Gracios!

SO HAPPY AGAVE FINALLY OPENED. We are in dire need of new restaurants on Daniel Island and Agave fills the much needed Mexi gap. Overall, we were very pleased with Agave. The decor is upscale while still comfortable and family friendly. They have a great drink & food menu which is authentic and eclectic. I got the quesadilla fajita and my husband got a burrito. Both were delicious. Really solid. We both had 24 Karat margaritas which were also good. No gross fake mix. The only downside is the service. It was really slow. And our waiter, while nice, didn't know anything about the menu. They need to step up their game when it comes to speed of expediting. It seems like most tables where having problems getting their food in a timely manner. And I heard from a friend that she and her family tried to go last night and waited over a hour for food, had two children melting down, and had to leave without eating. Not good. Their service is going to make or break them. Their food is quality so if they can figure out the service issues they should do great. I'll be back very soon!

I'm a fan due to the chunky guacamole and that stuff is just addicting. The drinks are fast and done well. The food is a just a cut above your standard La Ha quality. The service can be hit or miss, having been here a few times, it's been a challenge working with a waitress with limited English language skills. That being said, we got our food with only a few things missing fast and she was still very attentive. I can't wait to get out on the back patio in the summer.

This is a great addition to Daniel Island. I ate there today with some friends for the first time. The food was for the most part your typical American-Mexican fare yet they had some different items. I had the Chorizo-Pollo which was a grilled chicken breast topped with chorizo in a cream sauce. It was served with typical re-fried beans and rice. It was delicious. The restaurant decor is very well done and the seating was comfortable. Would definitely return.

  • Gabe W.

The service was horrible! I understand that this restaurant just opened, but the staff is unorganized and slow. We waited 10 minutes for drinks (tea and waters) and 40 minutes for cheese dip (which was ordered at the same time as the drinks). Two entrees appeared at our table after 1 hour and 10 minutes, but they were not our meals. At this point, we asked for our check for the beverages and left. We overheared another table complaining about waiting for an hour and asked to have their food boxed from the kitchen. I will not be going back unless I have a night to kill. Management should be embarrassed for not properly staffing the kitchen and the floor for opening week.

We had a great time at Agaves Cantina, which just opened up this week. A wonderful addition to the Daniel Island and Charleston dining scene. Loved the atmosphere, good, and great margaritas. We'll be back!

Stopped in yesterday for a quick, light lunch. Enjoyed both service and food. I had the Taco Salad w/ chicken, which was very filling. It's a small salad but was plenty for lunch. The menu looks good with authentic Mexican dishes as well as some house specialties. Many choices whether you're in the mood for chicken, seafood, beef, pork, or veggies. Our waiter was very kind and fast.

Food is like all other local chain restaurants. Menu didn't have numbers but still hot from microwave. Marg's were mediocre at best. Service was like at most Mexican restaurants. Salsa tasted fresh and chips were nice.

I have now been to twice. Once for their opening night and 3 days later for lunch. Opening Night was chaotic as expected but the food was still great and the service was as good as could be expected on opening night. The lunch I had was delicious. I had the fajita quesadilla and my mom had the shrimp tacos. Both were great. There was a large amount of shrimp in the tacos and the presentation was excellent. The overall feel of the restaurant is awesome and it is nice to see a Mexican restaurant in charleston that is stylish and cool. It is very tastefully done. I will definitely be going back. Great experience.

This place wants to be great (food is some of the best Mexican I've had in Charleston) but service is lacking. For the most part the staff tends to stand around in a group watching soccer on the TV at the bar. Been here twice they were doing the same thing BOTH times. I think with a few changes to management and staffing could be great. Dunno if we will be back until that changes.

  • Christina L.

I want to like them and have given them several chances. BUT, the food is just okay and the margaritas are flavored water. Not that I'm looking to get drunk but after 3 medium margaritas I didn't even have a buzz.

Finally had the opportunity to try out Daniel Island's new Mexican restaurant, Agave's. What a fun, hip atmosphere! The margarita's were fabulous, which is uncommon at most Mexican restaurants in South Carolina. Chips and salsa were excellent as well. I ordered the vegetable fajitas, which were delicious, however the tortillas were not heated correctly, or are of poor quality, as they would split when folding them over. The service was good and I look forward to returning and sitting out on the patio when the weather improves. My fingers are crossed that the 'tortilla disappointment' gets worked out quickly.

It took so long to open, we were worried we would be disappointed. Thank goodness, it was worth the wait! Wonderful atmosphere, amazing service, and great food. Our waiter had twice as many tables as normal and he never missed a beat - he gave us even more than we asked for. It's a beautifully designed/decorated restaurant with a great feel - upscale and casual all at once. Perfect salsa, perfect guacamole, and the carne asada was perfectly seasoned! They have great lunch specials averaging $7-8 each. Definitely suggest stopping by!!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
