1837 B&B accommodations and staff exceeded our expectations in every way. My wife and I spent 5 days here for our honeymoon and we enjoyed every minute of our stay. Key things to know: * Every staff member, including the owner, was exceptionally helpful and provided stellar customer service * Our room was picturesque * Breakfast and afternoon tea included amazing homemade dishes and pastries -- we never had anything we didn't like * The location is ideal, steps away from historic buildings and King Street * I was able to park a full sized SUV, but most parking spaces are for sedans or compact cars Going above and beyond: * Samantha ordered flowers and made dinner reservations for my wife's birthday--she took care of everything and it was perfect! * Leigh offered great suggestions for food, drinks, and places to see! * When meat was included in the main course, the manager made a special vegetarian omelet for my wife * The staff provided recipes of our favorite dishes to take home * If we needed a wine glass, bottle opener, extra towels, food recommendations, sightseeing advice, or a microwave, the staff quickly gave us whatever we needed with a smile We will definitely come back here again!

1837 was everything we had hoped for and more. My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights as part of our honeymoon and loved it. The building was charming and our room was very clean. 1837's staff paid great attention to detail and gladly accommodated all of our requests. The location of 1837 was the favorite part of our stay. In the heart of the historic district, the B&B is walking distance to most tourist destinations. Just a heads up: -The parking situation is extremely tight so plan accordingly (though the B&B staff always offer to help assist in parking). -The shower door didn't seal well so we were often cleaning up puddles of water after showering. -Don't be surprised if you are visited by the resident friendly ghost (a quick google search can fill you in). My wife claims to have been woken up on multiple nights by him, but surprisingly wasn't scared. Normally I would expect to be checking out the following morning, so he truly must be friendly! And he may or may not have stolen my sandwich. 1837 made our honeymoon extra special. We loved our stay and had nothing negative to say about our experience. We would recommend this B&B to anyone vacationing in Charleston.

Was looking for a more reasonably priced stay but still close to Market/King streets and this was a great pick! So clean, very private, great staff, wonderful breakfast! Met a great group of couples on our final night and shared drinks & stories with them on the front porch after dinner and then were able to enjoy breakfast with them the next day! If we're ever back in Charleston, this is a definite must. It really adds to the Charleston vibe and was a great treat!

We found 1837 on the Internet and were very pleased with our stay. In addition to the clean room and great breakfast we met four great couples on the porch when we returned from dinner. We broke out wine and beer and had a party. Our concierge Mary Claire Higgins was professional and delightful. We would stay again.

Ownership and Staff are here to comfort you....... Our trip to South Carolina was carefully planned as we had only a week to tour Charleston, Beaufort, and Savannah. Our B & B had to be in the heart of the historic district as we would not require the use of a car until the second leg of our trip, driving into Beaufort, SC. The 1837 B & B met all of our requirements, and then some, delighting us with personalized, transparent services, having us feel like family from the minute we arrived. We knew, within a short period of time, that this was going to be something special! We booked Room 2-2, located on the second floor of the Inn. This particular building, not unlike others, is situated sideways on it's plot. Historically, the tax rate was predicated upon the frontage of your building. By positioning the Inn with it's narrow dimension facing the street, the taxes were significantly lower. Following our trek up the stairs to the second floor, we came upon a very long porch which overlooked a series of palmetto trees as well as lush foliage reaching up and over our balcony. Our room was a delight. Furnished with a Queen-sized bed and a mattress to live on, needless to say, we slept very well. A full dresser and combo closet was more than adequate for storing our clothes. A comfy wing back chair as well as a short sofa-like ottoman completed the seating. The dresser/closet also housed a wide screen TV. The bath room was very adequate in size and featured stone surround with a well functioning shower head; water pressure was found to be very acceptable as well as the temperature. Night time brought us silence as we heard nothing from other guests. Black out draperies could be lowered for privacy in the evening. All other fixtures and furnishings functioned well. Sunlight streamed through our windows each morning. Housekeeping was fantastic. Breakfast time is always special to us. It's what a B & B is all about and the Inn did not fail on that count! Creative dishes were provided to us each morning, freshly baked including fruit cups and a special bread or breakfast cake. Coffee, juice, tea, lemonade were always available. We remember the super chocolate squares put out one afternoon; they melted in your mouth!! The Inn's manager Erin, met us for breakfast each morning and made us feel very comfortable as well as the Hakimian's, who oversaw everything in a very discrete manner. It must be pointed out that Erin prepared a coffee pot for our room, ready to plug-in, so that we could brew it either in the PM, or in the AM, a sweet touch. Erin also was very helpful with directions for dining and sightseeing. Not to be forgotten, Mary Claire, a staff member, personally assisted us with directions and was a delight to talk with regarding our tour of Charleston. (Erin also helped to coordinate the positioning of our rental vehicle within their parking area, back of the Inn. Thanks Erin and Mary Claire!) We highly recommend the 1837 B & B when touring Charleston. It's old world southern charm will captivate you as soon as you enter the Inn.

This charming B&B makes its home in a 200-year-old property a few short blocks from King St. and the heart of Charleston's historic downtown. The room my wife and I stayed in was exceptionally comfortable and clean, the perfect setting for a romantic weekend away. We'll be returning to Charleston often, and 1837 will always be our first choice for home base!

1837 was absolutely charming. The entire staff was attentive and helpful, and the breakfasts were delicious. They accommodated by husband's vegetarian diet, and were overall just great people. The location is perfect for walking downtown, and everything was clean and private. We will definitely stay there again if we make it back to Charleston, and recommend you check it out!

My husband and I stayed at the 1837 in early April and were very pleased with our choice. The location of the B&B is in the center of everything, just a few blocks away from King St and in the center of the College of Charleston campus. Although you are within the campus community we hardly noticed it. Overall an excellent location if you enjoy walking to shops, restaurants, and bars, and exploring a city. The proprietors of the B&B were very friendly and accommodating. The breakfasts and afternoon snacks were delicious and they were attentive to making alternative breakfast options for my husband. Our room, 2-1, was spacious and decorated to fit the period of the home. Overall if you are looking for a place to stay while in Charleston, pick a Bed and Breakfast so you can have the opportunity to stay in a beautiful period home. We loved our stay at the 1837 B&B and would recommend it to anyone who wants an affordable option while still being in the middle of it all.

LOVED IT! It was the perfect Charleston B&B experience. Really affordable, excellent location in the Historic District, on site parking, beautifully furnished room. I couldn't have been happier with our stay. I would definitely plan to stay here again if we return to Charleston. It was great. And the cake at breakfast doesn't hurt either!

As a result of a new owner and his message to me, I'll be optimistic and I'll upgrade to 3 stars: This is to inform you that the BB has changed ownership and I agree with you on the subject of check requirement for reservation deposit. We have changed this policy and reservation can now be guaranteed with credit card via a deposit policy at the time of reservation. Please refer to our website for details. We hope that you choose us again if your plans bring you to Charleston. The current owner

My (now) husband and I stayed here. We got an excellent deal on our quaint room in the carriage house- it was super cute, comfortable, not overly kitchy, and located very close to downtown. The food is THE BEST! Breakfast is perfect, served at a large communal table and cooked fresh in the kitchen. Please take a break from your site seeing and return for the afternoon tea, we had the best ever strawberry cake!! Only after returning home did I discover why our carriage room was so cheap- it was featured as one of the most haunted places in Charleston- too bad we didn't see any ghosts!

One of the best experiences I've ever had with any form of lodging ever. The exceptional stay started before we even checked in as we received a call from the staff the morning of our check in to inform us of the hazardous weather (tropical storm Leon) coming into the area and that if we couldn't make it there we wouldn't be charged or penalized. When we arrived a little later then projected, check in was seamless and the staff was genuinely relieved we had made it there safe from the weather. Parking was provided and easy! After settling into our gorgeous 3rd floor room, My wife and I went to the common area to meet the other patrons that were down there for afternoon tea. The building while being some 200 years old is in great shape and is charming and even though we were in the smallest room in the place we had more than enough room to feel right at home. The common area includes a large kitchen and dinning room table that has tea, coffee and cake for guests throughout the evening, there is also an adjacent sitting/reading room which I would assume has a lovely view of the street if it were icing and dreary out . After some suggestions for dinner from the down stairs staff we bid our farewells and were left to our own. The house is in a great location right in the middle of the university only a few minutes walk from dinning, shopping and bars, once again I can only imagine how beautiful the area is when it is not in the middle of an Ice Storm. Breakfast was amazing and cooked by the staff in the kitchen the next morning. When we found out that city was shutdown and I could not pick up my car from the port the staff had no issues with extending our stay an extra day. The on staff attendant even cooked my wife some eggs in the afternoon as she was having issues finding something to eat with all the shops being shut down. Top Marks to this B and B, will stay again

We had a great stay in Charleston at this B&B - charming, clean, comfortable, affordable, with tasty breakfasts and afternoon teas. The B&B is walking distance to the historic district and even has parking onsite. It is managed by very friendly people who go out of their way to make you feel welcome.

This hotel is everything you could want from a charming yet affordable bed and breakfast. Our room in the carriage house was quiet and comfortable. My parents found it small, but really, you have to expect some sort of tradeoff for your charming yet affordable bed and breakfast experience, and I certainly wasn't tripping over my suitcase or lacking for space to hang my clothes. The standouts here were twofold: the lovely common room overlooking a spacious veranda - perfect for enjoying the balmy Charleston fall weather - and the tea. The manager brews an outstanding pot of tea, which you should definitely check out, ether with breakfast or for afternoon tea on the veranda. The staff were uniformly friendly, efficient and helpful - especially Jane, the manager - and did not steer us wrong when it came to restaurants and sightseeing. The location isn't in the heart of the historic district, but I found conveniently central to everything. Overall, an excellent value, and I'd definitely stay here again.
