Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

I lived in San Diego, CA for a year and the mexican influence there, with regard to cooking and eating out, is significant. Every place I ate a carna asada burrito was a home run. In NYC, mexican that good is not easily had, so im grading my burrito on a high quality of taste scale. Mind you, this was my 3rd time, two prior visits I ordered carnitas burritos, they were Legit! But today a coworker/ former SDer was buying carne asada burritos, so I got 2. It was SD style, no rice nor beans inside. Just plump cuts of seasoned meat busting the tortilla open on both ends. I've eaten at their North Charleston location, with the small grocery side attached, both locations bring be back to SD quality at warp speed.

Our first time here and it was average. Chips and salsa started out good. My wife had an enchilada and taco. I had the grilled chicken and tareso sausage. While my portion was huge hers was really small and her taco was not what she expected.

So glad we came across this Great local Mexican joint. Large platters, reasonably priced. Chips and salsa are good, love the guacamole starter... Comes with flautas.. We always leave stuffed. Our go-to Mexican spot!,

Excellent food and service. Also a clean restaurant. My husband, who doesn't care for Mexican food, loves to come here. He gets a chicken quesadilla and also raves about the salsa and chips. It is one of our favorite places.

I am a frequent visitor to the Bluffton area and found LaNortana by accident three visits ago. I don't consider myself an expert on Mexican cuisine by any means but am mystified by the sub-par reviews. This last visit (8 nights) I reserved 3 for La Nortana and can't wait for my next chance to visit. I have no objection to choosing my own seat and have found the service consistently prompt and friendly. The space is clean, the atmosphere casual and inviting. The food, ahh the food. Wow. I have only experienced similar food in San Antonio. Miguel makes a huge array of fresh salsas and sauces. The fish, the pork, the beef cheek, the beef tongue, the shrimp are absolutely outstanding. The tortillas are fresh and what a difference they make. Miguel does a fabulous job of fusing the wonderful array of flavors in Mexican cuisine. All of these flavors may come as a shock to your system if you are used to anglicized Mexican food. I suggest starting with assorted tacos to experience what La Nortana has to offer. Take the time to ask Miguel about the dishes, he is rightfully proud of his work and happy to take the time to visit. La Nortana ranks as one of my favorite restaurants anywhere. It is definitely worth giving a try to see if it could be one of yours!

I only rated this a one star because you had to choose something... Walked in the place and was told to sit wherever we wanted so we chose a seat. We sat there a good 5 minutes before menus were brought to us. The server brought our drinks and chips and salsa promptly and took our order. We sat there an hour before our food even came. Another waitress was kind enough to notice our empty chip basket and offered to get us more while we waited for our food. No one came to check on us or give us a status on our food. Finally my husband said something to the manager and/or owner, and a few minutes later out food finally arrived. We had eaten so many chips we were no longer hungry for our meal. My husbands meal description boasted about chicken, but he was disappointed to find it lacked much chicken and had no seasoning. It was mostly onions and peppers. The salad that came with my meal was super soggy and drinched with water. The rice was average and the steak in my fajita was chewy and not seasoned well at all. We only took a few bites and decided to leave. We spoke to the owner/manager and he took care if things. I don't think we will be returning.

Yes it is very authentic. In fact there were a lot of people of Hispanic origin eating there while we were there. The food was obviously freshly made. However, the food seemed very bland and nothing special. The service was very slow.

I am saying this place was okay based only on the food we ordered. The food came out literally 3 minutes after we placed our order - so pretty obvious everything is pre-made and they just assemble in the kitchen. The pork tostadas were pretty gross meat was rubbery, steak quesadilla was fantastic really yummy and meat was tender, refried beans and rice seamed like they were not made from scratch, Tres Leches cake was dry and too sweet and the chips and salsa were good. With that said there is so much stuff on the menu - I think this place is hit or miss. The workers are not very helpful on what they recommend so we were flying blind. This place has potential though and we will try it again since the quesadillas were so good there must be other awesome items on the menu.

Authentic, delicious Mexican. Ole!! Go in knowing that this is a small, local place. No water falls or bands... thank goodness. There is a tiny market area as you enter with beautiful, fresh avocados, tomatoes, etc. The service was great...glasses always full, helpful, friendly. Food was fast, but fresh and hot! Guacamole was fantastic (although I did add salt bc I looove salt). We had Carne Asade which was good, but the Chori-Pollo was a m a z i n g!! Chicken + chorizo + queso.... wowsers. All for $10-13 per entree. We were so happy to find this place!

Based on the previous review, and the rainstorm moving across our originally intended path, a friend and I rode our motorcycles over from Savannah and had lunch today. We were given the chips and salsa almost before we sat down. The menu is very extensive. Lots of fish dishes with tilapia or cod. Tortas, tacos, ceviche, soups, specialties, etc. Reasonably priced. Started with the queso fundido (melted cheese with chorizo added) which was great. I had a carnitas taco and a cabeza taco, which were served in the style of a flat corn tortilla with the meat topped with chopped onion and cilantro. One tortilla instead of two stacked. The carnitas had a red sauce and the cabeza had a tomatillo sauce. Both were fantastic. The taco selection ran about eight different toppings, including chorizo and lengua. I also had a mixed tostada with octopus and shrimp. The seafood was finely diced and piled high with two slices of avocado on top. Very good. My friend had the shrimp burrito. It was huge and wrapped in paper and cut in half. He said it was good. The wrapper would make it easy to take half with you. The service was prompt and friendly with the table being cleared of excess plates and used napkins about halfway through the meal. Nice touch. Looked at the meat and seafood case on the way out. Big variety with whole fresh tilapia and catfish. Some good-looking langostinos for $7.49 a pound. I assume if you order a tilapia dish in the restaurant you get a freshly cleaned fish. Can't wait to go back. Thanks for posting your review Edith B. I would never have found this place otherwise. BTW, it's La Nortena.

Had to come check it out based on the reviews. I got the carne asada. It was crazy good. Great flavor on the meat. Fresh toppings. The beans and rice are excellent, too. Margaritas were yummy. The only complaint is for my daughter. She's 11 and is 50 lbs. The kids menu didn't have a simple bean and cheese burrito so we paid $10 for an adult bean and cheese. There was language confusion and rice and mexican cheese was included in the burrito. We didn't complain. I would think they could create a simple kids size bean and cheese for us. Oh well. I will return. It was good. Just disappointed in the ability to help a simple request.

This place is AWESOME!! Their food is flavorful, but not overbearing. The menu explains what each dish is so you're not playing dare when you order. The bartender, waiters/waitresses are so polite and friendly. They don't laugh when you try out your high school Spanish. They have a full bar and specialize in margaritas which are insanely good. I don't usually go for tequila, but it was tasty in their margarita. The best part? There was a kid there playing live music. Probably midteens, but he was playing some classic rock songs and it was beautiful. Definitely going to be famous one day. When I'm concerned about food and drinks, I don't register the music until my stomach is satisfied, but this kid really stole the show. I highly recommend this place!! The pricing was awesome, especially for Bluffton!!

My sister just moved into the area and three of us wanted a break from unpacking. The reviews were very promising so we gave it a try. We were disappointed on every front. Our first impression has nothing to do with the food. It was way too cold in the restaurant and the server could not understand when we asked to turn down the air conditioning. It was early and there were no other customers to consider. The margaritas were tasteless - both the mango and regular. The main courses were equally tasteless - all three of us had different dishes (chicken fajitas, Carne asada, and steak mexicana) and each of us was disappointed. I don't think that we are particularly tough graders for "tex Mex" but this did not measure up.

At first i was a bit skeptical of this place because from the outside it looked like it might have been closed. I have high standards for Mexican food because coming from NY their are a lot of Mexican restaurants to choose from. One of my key rules for judging an authentic Mexican restaurant is " if theres Mexicans eating there then its good!" I hate places that serve mediocre food and are more interested in quantity over quality. This place is all about quality. The service was excellent, the owner was very attentive and kind. If you don't value the quality of your food and the experience that a restaurant has to offer then go to taco bell but if these things are important to you as they are to me then go to La Norteña, you will not be disappointed.

This was our first stop on our hilton head trip. We were going to go to Pour Richard's next door but the wait was too long! So we walk in and the waitress was very friendly and told us to sit anywhere. We picked a booth and waited for our drinks. Their chips and salsa were on point! Had a kick which I love. I ordered the the combo - 2 steak tacos and beef tamale. The food was very good!! Very authentic and tasty. There was like a bug crawling around the wall then came on our table...I guess that's the south for you!! There was a very very bad rainstorm so I can see why the bugs would come out.

I have being going to this restaurant since December of 2010. If you love Mexican Food and love Spanish Culture you will love this hidden gem located just off the Bluffton Parkway. They offer a full bar, great selection of dishes, great portion sizes. I always find the restaurant is consistently clean, awesome customer service and a very welcoming experience. I have traveled all over the world, being to many places all over the United States of America. This restaurant certainly lives up to my expectations of a great Mexican Restaurant. If you are on Hilton Head Island, Bluffton, Beaufort, Savannah and Charleston be sure to check out this awesome restaurant. I certainly will give it Five Stars and will be returning in the near future.

Very good food. Great service. If you are having a craving for Mexican food and have a big appetite, then this is the place to visit.

The chori-pollo is the way to go! The tacos are also great -- a hybrid between authentic Mexican and more American-ized. Not great for vegetarians though.

Came here because of the ratings found here. We have traveled from Ca to Florida and now headed up East Coast. This is one of the top 3 places we have had since leaving Ca. We've tried a lot of places. Very authentic food. Food and service was excellent. Margarita was good too.

We were drawn to this place as it shares a parking lot with Poor Richards. We opted for this place instead. I am happy we did. Great menus and drinks. The portions are large and the food is outstanding

Came across this gem while vacationing in Bluffton/Hilton Head. Service was a little slow but the food was delicious. Everything was made fresh. Try the fish tacos and have a frozen strawberry margarita!

Spelled La Nortena. The best AUTHENTIC Mexican food around. Unique menu with items not found at chain Mexican restaurants. I highly recommend the Carne Asada.

Went here for lunch today, we started with guacamole dip. Very fresh and very yummy. This place was very clean and new and decorated to the tee! He ordered me a margarita. (not overly made with sour mix). I ordered the shrimp fajita salad served with very fresh shrimp, tomatos, lettuce, fresh avocado, and feta. The service was very attentive and the atmosphere was very pleasing! Cannot wait to return again!
