Grits and groceries is in the middle of no where, in a older convince store, across from a goat farm. Grits and groceries is one of the best places I have eaten. Not just here in this area but ANYWHERE! I can't tell enough people about this place. I am not sure how many times I have been here but it is always great. The staff is friendly and fun, Heidi the owner is awesome. Always order off the daily special menu and always get dessert! Everything is homemade even the ice cream. The desserts are amazing. I'm not sure what the other poster (George B) on here was talking about when he said his food was burnt and expensive???? I can not speak high enough about this place. This is where I take out of towners even co-workers from other countries to and they all love it. My favorite thing there is the fish cakes followed very close by the hog wings. If you are in the area of this place GO! You will not be disappointed.

I am glad I made it out here before I left SC. G&G is definitely a local institution, and it was packed out the patio when I showed up at 11:30AM on a Saturday. I was seated on the communal picnic table in the front, and I really enjoyed chatting with my fellow Southern travelers. Also, service is quick and attentive I sat down and got to checking out the offerings. The menu is fairly straight forward, but there is certainly something to satisfy everyone. Prices are a little steeper than most country diners, but they take care with the products they put out. The famous tomato pie was pretty awesome. It was a bit soggier than I would have liked, but the cheese flavor was perfect with the fresh slices of tomato in the middle. The crust was also buttery as a biscuit, but still a bit crisp. It was my introduction to Southern tomato pie, and it was solid. My shrimp and grits was definitely different than expected. The grits were runny and swimming in a soup-like gravy, and there was not a touch of cheese in the dish. The shrimp were nice and plump, and there was plenty of country ham to go around. The best part was the gravy itself: rich and savory. This will soon be on a TV food show, and the line will be never ending everyday up to closing time, so I would go SOON and check this local joint out. It is definitely a nice country drive, so make it a whole day event and enjoy what this area has to offer. Farm land, animals, and lots of country roads to get lost on.

At the intersection of nowhere and lost lies a gem of a diner. Grits and Groceries inhabits an old general store. The owner and his wife are chefs from New Orleans where he was pastry chef for ten years at Emeril Lagasse's world-famous French Quarter restaurant, Nola. This breakfast dive is worth the trip wherever you are from. I ordered the Bigun Breakfast Sandwich and it was wonderful as well as being more food than I could eat in one sitting. I also tried the bread pudding, equally as good. I HIGHLY recommend Grits and Groceries.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this place. I have to come here every time I visit greenville and I must say it is my favorite place. I always get the shrimp and grits and have tried their tomato pie (AMAZING!), crab cakes, & praline bacon). Service is great. Wait can be sort of long on Saturdays, so either you should get in earlier or be flexible on where you want to sit or if you are willing to share a table.

Grits and Groceries is the cats meow!! My family and I love to eat there especially on Saturday brunches and each time we have friends or relatives from out of town come in we always schedule a day for G&G. The desserts are like no other and the servings are always a heaping full. They even have summer supper clubs and the turn out is fascinating! Oyster roasts or pig roasts, cowboy suppers or bbq nites. I always try to get praline bacon and sweet waffle or french toast. the crab cakes are wonderful and the fries are hand cut! super friendly service and you are well taken care of!!! Not to mention its all fresh and the atmosphere is so inviting!

After hearing of Grits and Groceries from my father-in-law for a while now I finally had the pleasure to try for myself. We drove over for Saturday brunch and arrived around 11:00 am. After a short wait, we were asked if we minded sitting with others as there were 2 of us as well as them. No problem. After all, enjoying good food with perfect strangers could only add to the experience. And what an experience! On this venture we enjoyed She Crab soup, praline bacon, and tomato pie for appetizer, followed by the entree of grits, eggs, fried chicken breast, and a biscuit. Desert we enjoyed chocolate Coca-Cola cake. To truly describe the food would involve a string of adjectives, so I'll just leave it at amazing. The atmosphere is unique, the staff is excellent, and the price is reasonable for what you are privileged to. Bring cash as credit is not accepted. As mentioned above, you may be asked to join another party due to limited space and the demand. In this instance, we enjoyed the additional company. And no matter how full you may be, get desert. None in particular, just close your eyes and point! One thing is for sure, if I lived anywhere close to this gem I would undoubtedly gain many pounds and be lighter in the wallet...but I would love every minute of it! I will be back as often as possible....but not soon enough.

Food was really good and fun atmosphere! We had tomato pie, the praline bacon, and much more. We loved the cute goats across the street, too. One HUGE thing to note, they take CASH ONLY!! I was so upset to discover this as we had taken a client there and since there were 5 of us and we had apps, entrees and dessert, it was over $100. My client ended up having cash on him thank goodness but next time I will know better!

Not only is this the closest restaurant to my house, it happens to be the best breakfast I've had in SC. They have specialty breakfast plates; however, I haven't tried them. Honestly, after eating their traditional breakfast plates, I don't want to take a chance on ruining a visit there. I will say, I've heard they are phenomenal as well. Their cured ham is the best I've had, outside of my late grandmothers (who just happened to make the best country breakfast known to mankind). Their homemade sausage is a must, gravy as well. I will say their freshly grated, hi made hash browns are the best I've had...anywhere. I literally have cravings for their hash browns. I have finally tried their hamburger, it's ok. Their tomato pie is good and their praline bacon should be illegal it's so good. The negatives are the relatively small dining area, long lines (because their food is so good), they are not open at night or in certain days, and THEY DO NOT ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS!

Very delicious and tasty food in the middle of nowhere. Obviously this is not a place you just come across, so given the full room, there are a lot of people that seek out the delicious offerings from G&G. Today we had the meatloaf special, the red rooster special and the palmetto burger. All were great; moist meatloaf, perfectly fried chicken, flavorful grass-fed beef. We wrapped up the meal with some Lemon Fig cake and the Bourbon Praline Bread Pudding, the latter of which was covered in carmel sauce. Needless to say, there wasn't a bite of food left and four satisfied people who will definitely return again.

Came for the Saturday brunch. Upon arriving we were asked to sit at the outdoor pic-nick table. We politely declined and the hostess told us that it would be a long wait. We were fine with this as long as we were able to sit inside. 20 minutes or so passed and she told us we would be sitting in the outdoor section. We again kindly declined and she told us that no more indoor seating would open. So we decided to buckle down and eat outside. After we sat down, the entire meal we repeatedly saw families walking inside to dine, with no problem. Not sure why this happened the way it did, but the food was expensive and not exactly the best breakfast food I have ever tasted. There were also lots of wasps flying around the outdoor area while we are. This combined with the smell of the accompanying barn next to the restaurant made for an all around unpleasant dining experience. This place has a local following for some reason but I wouldn't suggest bringing your family here if you plan on just dropping by. If you decide to make sure you get a seat inside.

I've heard a TON about this place and finally was able to find some time to head on out and check it out. We arrived around 10:30 on a Sat and were seated intimidate. Our drink and meal order was taken in no time flat. So kudos to the amazingly quick and fast service, for this they easily get 5 stars. We ordered for starters the Praline Bacon ($5) which was basically meat candy at it's finest. For the meal we ordered the Carolina Shrimp Gravy and Grits ($11.50) Described as Shrimp in low country ham gravy, served with grits and homemade biscuit. While I am pretty sure I'm bias on my shrimp and grits, living on the Gulf coast of MS and Louisiana so I know it's not really fair of me to judge these shrimp and grits. But with that said, they were OK. I wasn't thrilled with them but I'm sure it's just because I'm expecting something totally different from a different area. The ham gravy was a bit to watery for my liking which in turned made the grits underneath it all into a soup. My fiance ordered the Eggs Elizabeth ($10.50) French bread slats, topped with ham, poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. Eggs were cooked to perfection, french bread perfectly toasted and plenty of hollandaise sauce. All and all it was a good meal. I can't say that I would hype the place up as highly as many have to me. I do like the small town feel, the cozy environment and the locally sourced ingredients. But to me the food was just sort of middle of the road and not mind blowing.

Food is top notch. Inside is small, but there's outdoor seating. The praline bacon? Gotta try it. It is out of the way, and they are cash only. Something to remember. No atm anywhere close, as far as I know. Their menu is on their website, as well as their hours. They are short.

Had a piece of fried chicken the size of my head with breakfast - great atmosphere, wonderful southern food, friendly staff. An all around great experience. Will be back!

This place is awesome! Great food and great service! We came for Saturday breakfast and really enjoyed it. Don't worry about the wait; line moves fast and the food is quick too.

Visiting SC from Mass...family took us here for lunch. Atmosphere is pure southern charm. Service was great, food was definitely southern and delicous. The ham balls were to die for. We also had praline bacon for an appetizer which was delicious! Wish we lived closer because we would frequent this unique roadside restaurant again and again.

There is only one down-side to the gem of a restaurant - it's in the middle of nowhere. However, make it a destination trip some Friday or Saturday. The food is worth it.

This place is highly overrated. I got a burger and fries, and the burger was uninspiring and overpriced, with wilted lettuce. The service was mediocre as well. After all the stuff I'd read I was hoping for better.

Grits & Groceries is the true definition of what a quaint restaurant in the South should be. The food is excellent, the atmosphere is unique and the people are extraordinary. The menu features various staples of Southern cuisine and doesn't disappoint. They are known for their tomato pie and praline bacon, but you need to make sure you try the pimento cheese burger. The burger is very tasty and a meal in itself. The fries are just average, but doesn't ruin the meal. Make sure to end your visit with some fresh made ice cream. The best flavor to try is banana bread with chocolate chunks. The hospitality from the entire staff is second to none. At times it feels like you are at a five star restaurant because multiple people help service your table and everyone is very friendly. They even bring you free food off the menu to make sure you leave with a full stomach. Make sure to bring cash, but don't worry if you forget to do so because you can pay through an IOU. This place is definitely a throw back to a simpler time and a little slice of heaven off the beaten path. If you are passing through South Carolina on I-85, make sure to budget some extra time to visit this hidden gem.

I'm obsessed with Grits and Groceries! I've seriously considered downgrading all of my reviews so Grits and Groceries remains as my only five star rating; that's how strongly I feel about this place. Please don't make me do that just to prove how much I love it! I spent a few months in Greenville last year and made the trip to Saylors Crossing as many times as possible. Believe me, the super sweet servers started to recognize our family. EVERY SINGLE THING we ordered was incredible. If you have the chance, I highly recommend the Saturday brunch! Again, you absolutely can't miss dessert!! Order several and take them home for later! I feel sorry for anyone I meet with any connections to South Carolina! I can't contain myself and immediately launch into my spiel about Grits and Groceries and how they HAVE to go as soon as possible and tell their friends and family to go. Oh yes, all of our family received Grits and Groceries cookbooks for Christmas!

Oh yeah! One of very few restaurants in the Clemson area worth returning to over and over again. I went for Saturday brunch with a group of friends and every food item ordered from the small but interesting menu was on point and attractively presented. My fried chicken was shatteringly crisp and the perfect counterpoint to rich grits, eggs and silky country gravy. The waitress kept our glasses full of lemonade and real watermelon juice. And the portions were right...I was in the middle of ordering dessert when I realized with dismay that I was so full, I wouldn't be able to eat a single bite of it. Maybe next time, G&G.

After many references from others we made our way to G&G for lunch on Tuesday and were not disappointed. A couple of us had the New Orleans Chicken and Sausage Jamablya, one had the BLT and one had the open roast beef sandwich. Everything we had could be considered really good country cooking and the portions were plentiful. You do need to get there early most days to avoid waiting. We will certainly be returning.

We were invited by friends to join them on a day trip motorcycle ride which also included breakfast at this restaurant. YUM is all I can say! There were 6 of us and we were immediately seated inside. The ambiance is great! The service was great.....they took our order immediately and our food was brought to the table piping hot and fresh. We loved all of the "out of the ordinary" choices, along with traditional breakfast choices. The Praline Bacon is very tasty.....it's a must have. I would recommend trying this restaurant......you won't be sorry :) :) OH...and I must not forget to mention the wide array of homemade desserts, pie's and other sweet treats...just looking at them will tantalize your taste buds. I loved it. We will definitely be returning to this fine, fun and friendly establishment.

I went for breakfast and was optimistic considering the fact that there was a 30 minute wait if you wanted a table inside the restaurant. Since I was in a hurry, I ordered my food to go. Once I got my food, I decided to eat at one of the picnic tables outside that do not require a wait to be seated. I ordered the Bigen breakfast sandwich with scrambled eggs, bacon, and cheese on Texas Toast, side of hash browns and lemonade to drink. My friend got a bacon biscuit. For me, the eggs needed a little more seasoning and the cheese seemed to be mild that it lost all flavor when melted. The sandwich's redeeming factor was that there was a lot of bacon in it. The bacon strips were cooked just right and had little fat on them. The hashbrowns were also tasty. They consisted of shredded potatoes mixed with onions and fried until crispy. I also ordered lemonade, but was a little disappointed because it tasted like it was watered down. It tasted more like lemon water and I paid $2 for that. My friend said her biscuit was dry but had a lot of bacon in it. In retrospect, I should have skipped the eggs and cheese and just ordered side of hashbrowns and the praline bacon. I have heard from others that was very good. If you want a sit down breakfast and you are passing by, stop and eat. The atmosphere is cozy and it is the only restaurant for miles. The price was not too expensive especially when I compared it with other breakfast restaurants. My breakfast sandwich cost $4, but it was a lot of food. I could order something similar from IHOP, pay more for it, and get less food. The service staff was nice and give the impression that everything on the menu is, in their words, "awesomely delicious". It was so-so for me though.

Ever since our son moved to this area, we always make sure we visit G&G. As a Yankee, it's the first place I've ever had shrimp and grits and I was not disappointed. The food is fantastic. The praline bacon is to die for. We have never been disappointed with breakfast or lunch and we will continue to visit G&G anytime we visit the area. If you visit this part of the state, you need to make at least one visit to G&G.

Not sure if this deserve a 3 or 4 star rating. I'll give it a 4 for time being and that is because the praline bacon was so wonderful. I went with my mom and the food was good, but a little overpriced. I had she crab soup (which was very watered down) and a breakfast entree and it was $20. I think that's kind of crazy for breakfast. But anyways, I wanted to experience this restaurant after hearing so many people talk about it. I'm pretty sure it was the owner that was cooking and we sat at the bar to have breakfast and she kept looking at my mom and I but never said hey are thanks for stopping by. Thought that was kind of rude, but I'll chalk it up to her being busy. (not really a way to run a restaurant in this economy though, esp when I'm giving you $20 for breakfast)
