Great place for the price. You get a lot of really good food. And it's well made. It only lacks the farmers market quality that some have. Will eat again and again. :-)

I must echo Iama C's opinion on the J. Peter's side salad, especially the hot bacon dressed version. I was stunned to find a chain restaurant serving a side salad prepared in-house instead of "dumped from a bag". Perhaps there is a future for western civilization. My wife had a sirloin she described as "very good" and such praise does not come easy from my ex-fiance'. I had the shrimp on a skewer. Well seasoned, generous count, and the chunky mashed completed the meal. I was completely pleased and surprised by J. Peters.

We brought my mother in law there tonight for Mothers Day we live in Greenville. There was a wait so they gave us a pager and then when it went off they told us they had paged the wrong number;(. When we were called again and seated we ordered. My husband and I both ordered baked potatoes as our sides. When the food was brought we had mashed potatoes we had to ask why to be told they were out of potatoes at 6:30????? You think they would have given is choices? Oh well 3 stars may be pushing it!

We were told we would be seated in 20 minutes but 30 minutes later we were still standing there. We had to speak with the manager that only offered free croissants. Croissants are free anyway! The restaurant is too loud. There isn't proper ventilation so we went home smelling like steak! The servers are friendly but can't get orders correctly. The steak was made as ordered. Nothing to brag about.

Best on the area options for dinner this one is great. Solid reliable restaurant with good service. Food was tasty. Menu had a variety of options for health conscious and those not so everyone can find something and be happy. Only place open on Sunday nights in downtown. They're a winner in my book!

Iama Critic Rating - J Peters Grill & Bar - 4 Stars 202 South Main Street, Anderson, SC Overall: Much the same menu as the other J Peters as well as the various Copper Grills, and this is not a bad thing as both restaurant chains provide awesome food for the price. It is hard to go wrong taking your guests to J Peters. Side Salad - 5 Stars Can somebody please tell me why every restaurant does not serve a J Peters style of garden side salad! Not only is it the best side salad, are you kidding me, it even comes with a croissant! It is the king of side salads! $7.49 - BBQ Chicken Nachos - 3 Stars Sadly all the toppings are on the top so chips on the bottom come out plain with no toppings at all. This makes the presentation great but the point of nachos is condiments on chips. $5.99 - She Crab Soup - 4 Stars Costs you a hefty $6.00. Thankfully it is very good. Not the best, but good, and not good for you either, as there is lots of fat in this silky smooth soup, but you should try it once. $16.99 - Fried Flounder Platter - 5 Stars Literally you should hear angels playing harps when you receive this J Peters flounder platter! Yes, the price is steep and maybe a dollar or two too much. But I ordered a free toasted optional bun so I could make a sandwich with my massive slab flounder fillets! And I ordered my entree with fabulous loaded mashed potatoes! The cocktail sauce was loaded with aromatic horseradish and the tarter sauce was chunky. Unless you are a downright glutton you should go home with at least one whole fillet. Wrap it in paper towels until you pop it in your oven at home for a fabulous dinner treat! The paper towels will keep you filet from getting soggy. Two 5 star meals for $17, how can you lose!

I've been here numerous times and while I will say they make a great burger, the food at their Downtown Anderson location continues to rise in prices and it's just not worth it anymore. I'd rather pay the same price for better food and service elsewhere.

Worst salmon ever!!! Taste like fatback! Swear to God. Service was good, but I've never tasted fish like that, it taste more like bar b q pork than fish. Still scratching my head?

  • Kirk S.

Will never eat here again. Food is over seasoned. Staff was not friendly at all. We had a major issue with our food and never saw a glimpse of a manager. Seems like a rip-off of California Dreaming or Copper River Grill. Only thing is, those restaurants are just better.

    (1)
  • Renna R.

    J. Peters is one of our family's go-to casual restaurants. They have fantastic salads and I really love their she-crab soup (having grown up on the coast, I've had a lot in my time). My husband always gets their burgers and really enjoys them. Overall, great service and really good food. The one drawback is that it can get pretty loud in there.

    (4)
  • Maria R.

Not a terrific place. The food is mediocre at best (my steak was overcooked an under-seasoned, and the side salad is nothing but iceberg lettuce doused in dressing with some almonds and bacon), and the service is slow (it took 5+ minutes for someone to initially come to the table to take our drink order, and the place wasn't even close to being busy). Frankly, just not worth the money.

The place is just fine for a casual meal. Decor is just fine for the type of place this is - old building - bar and grill... The staff was great - attentive and careful to check on us. Started with their house salad - it was excellent - it was huge! Ordered the bourbon salmon... Also huge. My wife got their mashed potatoes. which I thought were delicious. I had a baked potato - no complaints. The salmon was over seasoned for my taste, but I will admit that the waiter suggested that people either love it or not. He told us it was a very seasoned piece of fish. As everyone says the portions are huge. I suggest splitting the main course. We will be back - our neighbors suggest that the burgers are excellent.

Good food at a decent price.

    (3)
  • Carl Y.

Decent restaurant, excellent bartender, good service. The food was aggressively uninspiring, but entirely edible. Decor was a little on the loud side and yes, this is South Carolina so there is still smoking in the restaurant... shame really. And something encourages the patrons to wear jeans, hospital scrubs, and tee-shirts to an otherwise very nice venue in an emergent downtown scene. So... three stars because it may be the best of Anderson's options and is in no way bad. BUT, it does not warrant the overly effusive 4 or 5 star rating as it was just good. Not great... good. May go back... not sure.

The food is average. It's not delicious but its not awful. We were visiting family in Anderson for Christmas and this is one of their favorite restaurants so we came here for dinner one night. I would never crave a meal from here but I wouldn't shun a meal here either. It's ok and the prices are ok. I had the fried founder sandwich. I doused it with mustard to give it some flavor. The fries were soggy and the tartar sauce tasted like nothing (a waste of calories in my opinion).

Food is good but service is not so good. Second time I've been here and server didn't even know there was a table that had been sat in her section. When finally approached on the most recent visit, a girl said, have you not gotten your drinks yet? Nope, we haven't even been greeted by a server. She was nice enough to get us drinks but had to tell us she couldn't serve our table as she had already closed out for the night. When our server finally did come over, she was prompt, but it seemed like we were a hindrance to her.

J Peters Bar & Grille.....i ate at the bar, good variety of draft and bottle beer and had the j peters salad - mixed greens, egg, bacon and grilled chicken breast. the chicken was great!, cooked so it was moist, not all dried out and there was a lot of it. second time i have eaten here, both times very good. Note: smoking in the bar area/lounge is still allowed (it's SC, y'all) and if that will bother you the restaurant portion has no smoking allowed. happy trails.

The steaks are awesome. It's like they just melt in your mouth they're so tender. Good staff friendly service.

  • Michael A.

The food is good. But the rest is not good enough for what you pay. There is no place to wait for a table other than outside and then there is no where to sit. The service was mediocre. Asked if my son could get a cup of soup instead of fries with his grilled cheese and was told no, not let me check. I was willing to pay a difference if necessary but was not given an option. There were six of us at the table and we ordered a plate of five rolls and got five plates, one of which was dirty. No apology or offer of a sixth plate. My son then found a dead fly in his drink and the waitress took it without saying a word. She did say sorry when she came back, but it was too late in my opinion. Needless to say I will not be back.

This is the new place I take clients, as long as it is not during peak hours. It gets very loud when they are busy. The food is alright for the price, service is usually very good and the location is excellent. Think Applebees, but downtown. You aren't going to walk away impressed, but you'll be fed for a decent price with decent food.

Best prime rib sandwich in sc!! Highly recommend

    (5)
  • L T.

My family loves this place. My daughter and I split the ribs (by the way you get two racks of ribs, salad and side). Same type of salad you would get at California Dreaming which is awesome. We also love the barbecue chicken nachos appetizer and the brownie sunday which is plenty for 2 to share (3 of us share one).

    (5)
  • Heather K.

Ate here for a late lunch. I had the chicken salad wrap with fries and my husband had the chicken fingers appetizer. The chicken salad is easily one of the best chicken salads that I've ever had...not too sweet or overly "mayonnaised" perfect amount of almonds and red grapes. Fantastic fries too. We plan to bring other family back when we return next month. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because it's not smoke free. It is well ventilated, but maybe wait until after 9 pm to open the bar up for smoking.

  • Jeff B.

We were very pleasantly surprised when we came here with family that lives in town. After spending 10 days in Manhattan, constantly indulging in great food, that's a lot to be up against. Very cool space, but what stood out was the food. Some of the best prime rib we've ever had. All 7 of us, including 5 y.o., 12.y.o., and 18 y.o. had a great time.

    (4)
  • Charles C.

I have eaten at three of their locations. They are always great. The quality is excellent and the presentation good. Best of all they are always this way. Try the prime rib sandwich

  • Mark A.

I ate here when they first opened and I wasn't impressed at that time. I ate here tonight with four people and it was very good. I had the chicken salad wrap. It was exceptional. I also had steamed veg's and they were perfect.

  • Randy L.

The ribs up excelent. Special kudos to the buttered croissant. The bar is rather loud. The collard greens taste very good could be a little bit more cooked. Great service, very attentive and Prompt and courteous. Try the gigantic and succulent cinnamon apple crumb.

If you haven't eaten here... You haven't lived... Amazing food, huge portions, great prices, great service... If you don't mind fighting the crowd to get a seat, you're set... I've eaten a lot of ribs in my life, but none compare to J Peters'... From the endless number of amazing entrees, to J Peters' famous "house salad dressing"... This is a MUST TRY... I promise you won't be disappointed

The only reason I am giving a 4 star rather than a 5 is that for me the decor is very bland. On the other had, the food is great. My daughter and I stopped into the new location near the Regal Movie Theatre after a movie and I tried the JP Burger, delicious, it is better than the ones at the Copper River. I know I thought they were the best and most of you probably do, but, have you tried this one? Good food, Good service, good prices and near the movie theatre. What more can you ask for.

  • Nick W.

Every time we go downtown, the line outside to get in is long. This speaks to the quality of the food and the service, it is a comfortable place to hang out and unfortunately that hurts turning over tables. We return time and again because of great food and atmosphere. Looking forward to trying the newest addition in Seneca soon.

Food was ok, and the portions are huge. Food was good, but not great, I had flounder stuffed with clam and covered in a lobster cream sauce. I felt like the sauce overwhelmed the dish and it was all you could taste. It was good, but not great. I think next time I will try something simpler like the chicken fingers or one of the sandwiches. The deserts are served family style, with enough spoons for everyone. I am not on spit swapping relations with everyone I eat with so this was a little awkward. Felt like the music and food was turned up to eleven. They do not offer any place to wait to be seated so if its a hot July day, and they are busy, you will have to sweat outside. On the plus side, the side dining room had a great view of the courthouse square.

Comes down to personal taste. Here in Anderson, giant portions reign. I personally prefer burgers that don't taste like meatloaf and I can finish. I don't want to take another meal home, I want to continue my night out without carting around styrofoam. Perhaps J. Peter's is just not my atmosphere or style of restaurant.

    (3)
  • John P.

Good value for your food dollar and draft beer is $1.50 during Happy Hour.

    (4)
  • Fast F.

Huge portions of pre-made food. Salad by itself would be OK. The flounder was underdone and what sounded like good stuffing was completely missing. Although there were some nasty little shrimp like I see in cat food...

One of my favorite restaurants. I always come here with good friends & it's always a good time. Delicious food - not a restaurant for vegetarians. Personal favorite: baked potato soup!!! LOVE IT!

  • Drew R.

The main thing you need to know about J Peter's is that the portions they serve are roughly the size of a small continent if a small continent could fit on a plate. In other words, their portions are enormous. I went with Mom and Dad, and as we typically do when going to a new restaurant, we each ordered something different and then took a bite of each other's meal so we could tell what we think of the whole restaurant. Everything was delicious! Their salads are great, their bread is delectable, the food is terrific, and the desserts are resplendent! And their portions are enormous. The restaurant's atmosphere was also rather nice; something of a cross between Olive Garden and Texas Roadhouse. You'd be hard pressed to find friendlier service than what we had on our first visit; but on our second visit (admittedly, with a cast party consisting about about 60 rather noisey kids and high-schoolers, plus parents [long story]), the service was a little bit grumpier Our third visit (just parents and I, sans 60 kids and high-schoolers), the service was much more pleasant. That's no small feat, since their arms must get really tired carrying the trays of food...since their portions are enormous. But one flaw that I fell I must point out is that, after three visits, J Peter's seems to focus more an quantity than quality. That's not to say that their food is bad (quite the opposite) it's just that it not hard to find other restaurants in town that will offer a better version of J Peter's dishes. Yes their food is good, and there are plenty of enormous portions to go around, and it's worth the money, but if someone were ask me: "Hey, you look like a Yelper. Could you tell me where to find the best ribs in town?" I wouldn't say J Peter's. But hey, at least their portions are enormous.

This place is awesome! We met some friends here and had from the tuna to salads to burgers and all were exceptional including the service!!! Will definitely go here again. It is very hard to understand the negative reviews really. Clean, organized and not outrageously priced for the quality.

  • Sam S.

As many people have said, portions are huge but the food is just Ok.... The main issue tonight is sitting near the hostess area.. We could not even breath without someone being right on top of us... Sarah our waitress did a great job and apologized 2 to 3 times on every visit. She even fought the crowd each and every time she came to check or bring food to our table. Bottom line, management should not allow 26 people to stand in the very small area inside the main door.... Worst experience ever....

  • A F.

Awesome is the only word I can use to describe this place. We had the ribs, which were full of flavor, fall off the bone, and just plain good. The side salad that came with the meal was large enough to be an entree all on it's own. Service at the restaurant was superb. Our waitress was great at making recommendations on the food, always there with a refill and a great personality. This is approximately 20 minutes from I 85, but it is well worth going to.

I have eaten at three of their locations. They are always great. The quality is excellent and the presentation good. Best of all they are always this way. Try the prime rib sandwich

I ate here when they first opened and I wasn't impressed at that time. I ate here tonight with four people and it was very good. I had the chicken salad wrap. It was exceptional. I also had steamed veg's and they were perfect.
