Went for breakfast on a recent weekend and I have to say that the crepes weren't that great. They were actually kind of gooey in texture---and not fluffy or light like other crepes. Nice staff, but nothing really popped or jumped and food could have been a bit better. Next time I'd try something like waffles versus the crepe.

Really tasty breakfast- I was surprised that it wasn't more crowded! Tasty waffles & crêpes all around & the best cappuccino I've had in months! We'll definitely be back again (& again!). Had some yummy looking lunch options as well... I can't wait to go back!

The Van Ghent Cafe is our go-to breakfast (and occasionally lunch) spot). It is an adorable, quaint little place with fun, eclectic decorations. The food and service is always top-notch. It is always fresh and prepared to order. The owner, Ebba, puts her heart and soul into her work and it shows. Kathy always provides friendly service and is attentive to our needs. When her time in the kitchen permits, Ebba stops by the table to make sure we are satisfied with everything and we chat a bit and get to know her a bit on a personal level. I highly recommend the VGC (as we'll call it).

If you're looking for something different then this is a good choice. The food is all made fresh and everything I've had was delicious. Crepes, waffles and Dutch sandwiches (Broodjes). Try it, you'll like it.

This gem feels like it should have bicycles parked I. Front as though in Amsterdam or Brussels. IG is unique here and is an amazing taste of the old world. We had the omlets with home made French cheese. Well priced and delicious. Yay!!

I really enjoy visiting this cafe when I visit Westerly, RI. The staff is very pleasant and the menu is very light and refreshing. Everything is fresh and tastes wonderful and the price is right! The atmosphere is welcoming and charming right in the heart of town!

Where should I start? Breakfast! The omelets are flavorful with a good variety to choose from, I ordered the ham & cheese with rye. My cappuccino was the best, hands down. Latte milk with cinnamon, mocha and enough to enjoy throughout your meal. Ma & V ordered the Belgian waffles, delicious. Fresh fruit, whipped cream, amazing taste. Last feature of this amazing meal was the van Ghent Crepes, wow! This is a beautiful spot that transports you to a fine Belgian cafe and it's right here in Westerly. Definitely a great place for breakfast/lunch when you don't want the usual and you can't get to Europe.

Eclectic atmosphere. Home cooking feeling. Best crepes of my life. Will be back ASAP!

My family and I have been vacationing in the Westerly area for 20 years and have tried pretty much every restaurant under the sun. We discovered Van Ghent 10+ years ago, and now it has become tradition when we vacation in Rhode Island. I can recall the original, Belgian owners, but we have a great relationship with the current owner, Ebba. I look forward to seeing her every year! The cafe is small, but quaint, and you can see Ebba cooking right in the kitchen. My go to meal is the signature Crepes Van Ghent and it is probably the most delicious item I've ever consumed. Prices are reasonable and portions are super filling- it's definitely a place you need to visit for breakfast or lunch. Thanks, Van Ghent, for making my vacation each year a little sweeter!

Very charming; evokes a European ambiance with its decor and laid back, friendly service. Very authentic Belgian items on the menu and the prices are very reasonable. Just bring cash as they do not accept debit or credit cards. To me, that is not an issue. In my opinion this is a must-visit if you're in the Westerly area.

All delicious, very cozy dining area, very friendly staff. I love places where the cook checks to see if you enjoyed your meal. I'm a huge fan of their crepes! Cash only, nicely priced, you'll not drain your wallet. :) YUM

A completely inauthentic Belgian "restaurant", if you can even call it that. The owners were extremely rude. My friends and I went in on a Saturday to a completely empty place with no food selection. I've never been so insulted at a food establishment and will not be going back. I recommend NOT going to this place. There are many other eateries in the area where you will find a much better experience.

Anyone giving this place a high rating must've gone on a good day. This cafe is known for its unfriendly staff and horrible customer service. I cannot even put into words how impolite the owners/managers were. Not to mention the place was empty on a Saturday. It smelled funny and had little to offer. There are much better places in the area!!!

At first it seems so small that you are afraid claustrophobia will set in but as you take a deep breath it hits you with cozy charm. Lots of nick knacks and ketchy charm. This is THE place for brunch in westerly. Great waffles and so much more. All tasty. *edit- I've been back since my first review and the service seemed to not be what it once was and the food took a long time. Also they have been cash only forever...shouldn't they TRY to get with the times? Dropping them a star level.

Service was sooooo slow and very indifferent. The food wasn't worth the wait. Coffee refills at breakfast required flagging down the waiter. A few of us had waffles--the "very berry" special had cut-up cantaloupe, honeydew and a few strawberries dumped on it. The waffles had an interesting tang to them, but they were tough and difficult to cut. The crepes were okay, but we won't be going back.

Quaint, cute, and great little joint for breakfast (I hear the sandwiches at lunch are good, too). Belgium flair with crepes and waffles as their specialty. If you want a traditional bacon and eggs breakfast then this is NOT the place for you. But, if you want something a little different and delicious--like chocolate banana crepes or strawberry rhubarb waffles--then this is the place for you! Very small (so there may be a wait) but cheap. IMPORTANT!!! They ONLY take cash so be sure to hit the ATM before you go!

An absolutely cute little Belgian sandwich place. Right on the river that is the border between CT and RI. The menu is varied, and I had a hard time picking what to eat - I wanted it all. I went with a croque madam - it was perfection - a ham and cheese grilled sandwich on rye, with a fried egg on top, a small salad as a side, as well as applesauce, and some chips. Having never been to Ghent, nor Belgium, I don't know if apple products, applesauce in particular, are popular there, but it was a nice addition to the meal. If I had had room, I was going to get one of the crepes for dessert. A few went by me as we ate, that looked delicious. The waffles did as well, and quite a few people were eating them while we were there. Karin had a sliced pork and hard-boiled egg sandwich which looked hearty and tasted great. Same sides for her. The waffles won "best waffles of RI" in 2005, so that is something too. The decor is awesome - tons of pictures of Ghent from years gone past. The tables are colorful, and it generally has the feel of a European cafe. It is warm and inviting. The crew that was working Sunday - not sure if they were the owners or not - were nice, welcoming and friendly. Be warned - they take cash only - but the prices are so reasonable, that CAN'T be a problem. The main branch of the Washington Trust Bank is across the street, so an ATM is close by. The hours reflect the relaxed European attitude also.

The food is good, but for the price could be better. I was not overly impressed with the crepe my son ordered, it seemed difficult to cut and really had nothing to make it stand out. I have made crepes before and for $6.00 a crepe should be more than butter and brown sugar.
