I've patronized this place off and on for 30+ years. Its best attributes are its location, near Matunuck Beach, and the fact that it has a takeout. I think Capt Jack's has stayed open because it lacks competition. Some may like the food, but I think that they are just settling. Most don't. The takeout works for people who have kids. If you are in SoCo for vacation, I'd recommend that you head over to Monahan's Dock or Iggy's at Narragansett Pier for takeout. If you want a nice meal, Jim's Dock in Jerusalem, and the Matunuck Oyster Bar right across from Captain Jack's are much better.

Have been coming here for 30 years. Love the new menu items. The clam cakes have never been better. Light and filled with clams.

Myself being very picky about clam chowder, I have to say this place has by far the best chowder in the state.

I thought Captain Jack's was very typical RI seafood. It was nothing amazing but it wasn't bad either. I ordered a Lobster roll with sweet potato fries and I thought it was pretty good. All their pastries look good behind the counter that's for sure. I got a cupcake to go and I liked it. I just didn't care for the location and the service could have been better.

There's "other" restaurants in the neighborhood that cars and ppl line up for hours to get into on daily basis, but for my money and enjoyment I chose Cap'n Jacks every time, specifically the pub and raw bar. Initially Cap'n Jacks started as the only option, after hurricane Sandy we spend every weekend cleaning up and rebuilding after our cottage took on water and significant damage, Cap'n Jacks was always there, a place to eat and warm up. Food was always good and always consistent, but with the addition of the pub and raw bar this year, they took it to the next level. The pub has a big bar and high top tables looking out over the salt pond, the menu is great, lots of different options with sandwiches, pizzas, salads, dinners, and the raw bar with shrimp clams and most days they have at least 3 different varieties of local oysters. There's multiple flat screen tvs throughout the pub, the bartenders are friendly, the atmosphere is relaxed and you don't feel crowded or rushed. Its a great place to relax grab a meal, a drink, watch a game, or just look out at the water. The owners are also class acts and very helpful and supportive to the area and its residents and that goes a long way. Great place.

We recently visited Cap'n Jacks and were totally disappointed. I ordered the fried seafood platter ($24,00) and I asked if I could substitute the soup of the day for the chowder, the waitress returned to say that no they wouldn't allow the substitution. The platter contained 2 shrimp, 5 badly under cooked scallops, some small overcooked clams, a piece of fish and 3 clam cakes. The clam cakes were poor as well, with no taste and a batter that was entirely to light and was more like fried bread. The only reason for the 2 stars and not just one star was the fried fish. It wasn't great, but it wasn't bad. We are locals and there are definitely better places around southern Rhode Island for seafood. All five members of our party agreed that they wouldn't return.

Meh. No bar- really? Just a service bar? Lots of fried food. Could definitely use a facelift. The location is terrific and IMHO it's a shame that they don't do more with it.

I go to this restaurant for its lovely view of the harbor and to be near the ocean. Service is OK, with cranky waitresses with thick Rhode Island accents. However I have never had an amazing food experience. The chowder is too salty, the French fries somewhat mushy texture, and the clam cakes tasted good, with the right texture and not greasy, but not enough clams.

Great new pub environment! Now a choice of doing the tried and true Jack's or the new Salt Marsh Pub & Raw Bar. Had the calamari and it was tender and flavorful. The shrimp fra diablo had large shrimp and nice spicy flavor. If you are a desert person there are lots of choices but the chocolate layer cake can't be beat! We will definitely be back frequently especially as the weather is getting warmer and we can sit out on the patio.

Tried this place years ago after hearing about it on the radio and coming back from the Fools Regatta in Jamestown. We have made it a tradition to go back at least once per summer. Their baked stuff shrimp is my favorite and I love the desserts, but can never make up my mind, they all look delicious. Sitting outside overlooking the salt marsh is a bonus!

Other than the point that its near the beach there is nothing good about this place. Watery clam chowder bland calamari but the service was good. Place made me sick..should be called captain sh!t jacks instead.

I've been here twice now and enjoyed it both times. The stuffed fish was amazing and so rich. I also had the chowder which I thought was very good. Both times we had excellent service which is always important to me. The waitress came back several times and always made sure we had plenty to drink.

Not a bad place. Standard fried seafood. The portions are large though! The service was good even though it is usually packed around dinner time. Many tourists stop by here as it is on the "main" road to the beach. If you are going, go on the early or late side of dinner, or you will be waiting for over an hour. Also, this place is good for larger groups as they have a fairly large dining room.

I gave the restaurant the opportunity to respond to me by waiting three weeks to post this. Very disappointing. I was at your restaurant on July 7. I have been thinking about our experience since then and finally decided to write you. I have lived in South County most of my life and spent much of my childhood through early adulthood working in food service in many of the local establishments. My husband's early career was also in hospitality and food service as a professional. Over the years we have eaten at Captain Jack's. Many years ago we enjoyed the clam cakes and chowder, however, over the past 20 years I would say that our several experiences there were mediocre and we had not been back in at least 5. Recently, friends told us that the menu and facility had been updated so we thought we would give it a try. We had out of town friends visiting who were originally also from South County. They were dubious but game to try it. There were 9 people in the party, including one child in a wheel chair. The waitress was not well trained. She was extremely friendly but not attentive or helpful. Our appetizers arrived essentially at the same time as our food. I had the stuffed fish. When it was served it appeared wet and undercooked. After a bite I knew something was wrong and did not eat anymore. When the waitress reappeared I asked her to show it to the cook and maybe it was underdone? Meanwhile, everyone was served except one of our party who had ordered baked stuffed lobster. He was told that his lobster "was not quite done" but it would be right out. It arrived after everyone was done eating. It was so over cooked and dried out that the meat stuck to the claws and tail and had to be scraped off with the little fork. It was terrible. Meanwhile, my fish was brought back. It looked essentially the same. I tried another bite and it was inedible, still wet/slimy and with a tangy bad taste. When the waitress came back I told her it was really inedible. She said she was sorry. Later, I again told her that I believed she should make someone aware of it and she replied "I did". At this point we did not bother to mention the terrible lobster as clearly management did not care to even stop over and ask about the bad fish. Incredibly, we were charged for the inedible dish! The rest of the meal was mediocre at best. My real issue is not with the lousy service or the bad food. Any restaurant could have an off day. What was so reprehensible is management's lack of concern or commitment to providing a quality experience for their clients. The message we received was that it is ok to deliver spoiled food, bad food and with bad service and we don't care to even come discuss it or make it right. That is inexcusable.

I attempted to go here for ice cream today but when I left my car to get in my husband's and help with the kids, the manager proceeded to baracade my car like it was a police standoff to tell me I could not park here for the beach. I had two children in the car and told him that we were attempting to go for ice cream. He didn't "believe" me and then told me he would not serve me. We left and will never return. Very rude in front of children. Do not bring your kids here and do not waste your time!

Absolutely loved this place. It is certainly a place for tourists, and I'm perfectly okay with that, because it was your typical American food, and I did not have a single complaint about it. OH, and their drink menu was fabulous. Now if you're looking for great ambiance, tjhis probably isn't the place to go unless you request the deck to sit on ( Just make sure to bring some bug spray because it's on a marsh and the mosquitoes will eat you alive. ) I will say the Fish and Chips were extremely good, the piece of fish must have been the size of my forearm ( I don't care about size that much, but Damn it was a huge piece of fish!! ) Their homemade potato chips were also very good. Staff was extremely friendly, I'll definitely make a trip back here eventually if I'm craving fish and chips.

I have a love-hate relationship with this restaurant. It is located right next to East Matunick Beach and my family and myself usually visit at least once a year for an after the beach bite. Apparently, the Matunick Oyster Bar is amazing (or so I've heard) and is right down the road, but Captain Jack's is more for your average Joe seeking a casual and relatively quick bite. As a fried seafood lover, Captain Jacks has proven pretty yummy for such things, but do not try anything remotely fancy. It is your basic seafood and chowda type joint (sometimes even the lobster roll can be a stretch). My family loves to sit outside on the deck when available. As previous postings have mentioned, this is overlooking a marsh and the bugs can be quite harsh. This past season they have invested in some sort of noise machine that keeps the bugs and critters away. However, BEWARE if you have good(?) hearing, I sat down outside and after minutes of pestering my parents if they heard anything (with no luck), was about ready to scream at the kid on the side of me playing with his Nintendo DS (assuming this annoying humming noise had to be coming from his game). I eventually asked the waitress and she explained, but by the time our meals were finished I raced to the parking lot quite fast to escape the screeching. Also, from my experiences (and let me know if you have had any luck), they do not substitute ANYTHING, usually even for an additional charge they will not. They are sticklers and I can only imagine how tough it must be for people with certain allergies. So overall, Pros: Fried seafood, chowder, yummy frozen drinks, desserts Cons: Overpriced for what you get, certainly not gourmet, no substitutions, and that damn noise machine!

Cap'n Jacks is good for what it does. It is typical New England seafood faire, without any frills. Many people will try to unfairly compare it to Matunuck Oyster Bar down the street, but honestly that is apples and oranges. MOB is honestly a five star restaurant whereas Jack's is more around a 3. Jack's hasn't updated the interior of the restaurant in years, but honestly for what you are looking for here, there is really no need to. Now what Jack's does great is the desserts. They don't advertise them too much until you walk in and gaze into the dessert case to your left. Trust me, anything out of that case is one of the best things you have had. In terms of RI desserts, Jack's is close to Wright's Dairy Farm (Note: I said close Rhode Islanders..jeeze). If you are looking for chowder and some clam cakes, head on over to Jack's and you won't be disappointed. If you are looking for ambiance, top class food and a great eating experience, then I suggest heading to Matunuck Oyster Bar if you can get a seat.

Very disappointing visit to Captain Jack's. This restaurant has been open for as long as I remember. We had driven down to Matunuck to go to the Matunuck Oyster Bar but had a 2 hour wait so we decided to go to our old stand by, Captain Jacks. There was no wait on this Saturday night (which should have been a big red flag) Place looks the same as it did 30 years ago. Food was meh at best... Not worth the money at all. Sandy shellfish, overcooked, not much taste, mediocre service. For just a couple of dollars more I could have had a magnificent seafood dinner in Providence at Hemenways. Looks like my days at this place are over. Oyster bar is terrific, have eaten there before. Too bad (but good for them) the wait was so long......

I was really surprised when Mom and I ate here recently. The last time I'd eaten here it was standard Rhode Island tourist fare. We had lunch here a couple of times and boy were we surprised! I ordered the lunch fish and chips. I got a cup of chowder, 3 clam cakes, an HUGE portion of batter fried fish, a large amount of fries and a nice cup of coleslaw for under $11.00. It was *delicious*. Mom got a BLT nicely filled with bacon. We've also had the tuna melt (comfort food.) One thing that I don't remember that made me squeel like a child was the lobster cupcake that greeted me at the bakery case! It was adorable (god how I hate that word,) and I needed to get one for my Father to see how he would react. My Mother and I shared one after lunch. They are HUGE! They have turkey cupcakes too!

We dropped in while waiting for our family to get to the bay, decided to get a cocktail. We were told by the hostess we couldn't order drinks without ordering food. (Ummm, really?!) so we got a table outside on the patio, the view was great, the service &food were just okay. The waitress didn't know what drink I was ordering, said "maybe the bartender will know what that is." It was a vodka gimlet. Turned out he did. Hubby ordered bottle beer, and the look of relief was evident on the waitress's face. She returned with the drinks and asked what we wanted to eat, and since we were obliged, we order small appetizers. I ordered the Lobster bisque, hubby ordered the stuffie (stuffed clam). Both arrived and both were sub-par. I am giving the three stars based on location and view of the bay.

For the price, the food was very disappointing -- greasy fried food that can be found anywhere, usually better. I'd expect to get better seafood right on the water than I can get at home in the Jersey suburbs, but that's not what we found. The staff was friendly and attentive, and my kids did rave about the desserts that we got them there, as others here have noted.

We've been going to Captain Jacks for 15 years and are regulars each Summer going 6 or 7 times. The clam cakes, calamari, baked seafood platter, and fish and chips are among our favorites. Their chowder is the best we've had in RI and even the salads and steaks are great. The selection of homemade desserts is fantastic although we rarely indulge as the portions are so substantial we never have room. Great service and a location overlooking the water are bonuses..

Went here a few weeks back...I had my heart set on a lobster roll from the Matunuck Oyster Bar, but it was closed (complications from Hurricane Irene I'm guessing), so we went here instead. We were seated on the deck and the view was gorgeous! Service was prompt, and I enjoyed my glass of wine but that was it. I wanted to send my lobster roll back before I even tasted it! It looked disgusting...runny, watery lobster meat on a flimsy hotdog roll. My boyfriend was looking at it apprehensively as well. I took a teeny bite and it was rubbery and super fishy and just nothing like a lobster roll should be. There didn't even seem to be any seasoning on it, either...it's like they didn't even try. I sent it back and decided to play it safe and not order anything else. My boyfriend didn't like his French onion soup, but he said his bacon wrapped scallops were fine. Do yourself a favor and go across the street to Matunuck Oyster Bar instead.

Great nostalgic restaurant, but the food is okay. We started off with some chowda which was okay and then moved onto some clam cakes. The clam cakes were lacking enough clams to give it a proper RI clam cake taste. After the clam cakes we moved onto our fish and chips which were better than the other parts of the meal. There was a huge portion and it was perfectly fried. For dessert we had some cupcakes. My wife had the one that looked like a lobster. Once again, it looked great, but tasted average. All in all, you get a great view of the bay with decent food and a nostalgic feel. So if you are in the area, and are looking for some decent fish and chips, give this place a try.

Some context first: my wife and I both worked in the restaurant business. I'm a RI native and grew up going to East Matunuck beach and visiting the Seagull Restaurant which is now the popular Oyster Bar across the street. Captain Jack's has been around for at least 25 years and since then has had a mixed reputation with the locals. Now we live in Mass. and decided to visit E Matunuck beach this weekend and try Captain Jacks. Perhaps they have changed? Not a chance. After a ~60 minute wait (that's okay, it was busy and we asked to sit outside) we had a lousy meal. First, the busser never set silverware on the table. The waitress, although nice, did not notice we had no silverware - even as she served the appetizers. We had to ask for silverware.. We had clamcakes and the drunken clams - it was okay. The side dish they gave me was totally dirty... like the wait/busstaff didn't care - it was that obviously dirty. Upon her recommendation we had the house Bloody Mary which ended up being like a $9 drink and had very little alcohol. The drunken clams came way later than the clam cakes - the waitress immediately said "I don't know what's going on with the kitchen" and delivered them some 10 minutes after the clam cakes. The white chowder was the watered down with milk - like they were trying to stretch a batch. Far from RI's best chowder . Our entrees came much later. None of our plates were ever cleared... even as she delivered more drinks for us and the kids and the entrees, our table was littered with dirty plates. My kids had the shrimp basket and split a fish & chips - this was okay. My stuffed flounder was disgusting with raw baby shrimp inside. I lost my appetite and returned it. No "I'm sorry" from the waitress, just more throwing the kitchen under the bus... she did at the end offer a free dessert. Overall, I'm very much disappointed - in over 25 years they STILL can't get it right. The worst $135+ I ever spent.

Took my grandmother out for chowder here the other day and I have to say it was really disappointing. I've been here before, years ago, and I remember it being much better. The chowder was thin, heavy on the potatoes, and light on the clams. The flavor wasn't all too bad, but even Snow's canned chowder is better. Clamcakes were good, fried clam strips way too thin & crispy (in a "is there actually clam meat in here?" kind of way), and the lobster roll was flavorless. Pretty sure it was just meat and plain mayo, and I think a little celery or lemon would go a long way. (And butter on the roll, of course!) It's just a typical casual RI seafood restaurant, so I don't know how they could make everything so blah. On the upside, the service was good...friendly and prompt. However, with such crappy chowder on the menu, I definitely won't be going back. I'll head over to Aunt Carrie's or George's for my next clamcakes and chowder fix.

It's your basic R.I. seafood place, although the deep fat fryer is king here, some of the boiled and broiled dishes are worth trying. I like the bisque here a lot.

I found Captain Jack's to be an ideal location when spending the day at E. Matunuck Beach. The take out counter makes it easy if you are sandy and still in beach mode. The staff are friendly. I have not eaten in the dinning room. The fish sandwich was tasty and plenty big with lettuce and tomato.

Thanks for being so unacommodating and curt. My friends were here on the porch and invited me along after I was finished with something. Mind you when I arrived the indoor section, dead as a doornail. I ask a server if i may pull up a chair seeing as there were plenty. She said sure i dont see why not and was interrupted by a woman who said no i cant i have a wait. To this I asked if i could just pull up a chair since there were so many. I was told flat out no with no alternative, basically she didnt care. I was willing to spend money in your establishment and felt genuinely unwelcomed. Btw this was my first time here and last.

Happened to be in area and needed something quick to eat , knowing that they had take out we stopped here. I should have know by the girls when I first walked in that this was not going to be a great experience. The least friendly young girls . I don't think one of them put on a smile once. Needless to say the service was horrible and the food was even worst!!!! Threw every bit of it out. It was a waste of time and money. !!!!!!!! Horrible!

If 1) you can't get into the Matunuck Oyster House across the street or 2) You don't want to spend as much as you would across the street then this is a good option. They are very different actually but because they are close (& there isn't anything else here) I thought I would mention it. It's hit & miss here. If you want to just have cocktails & seafood & chill out appreciating the great view then the lounge is perfect. Strong cocktails. Nice beer options. Dinner? Be prepared to endure the typical wait. Highlights: super perfect beer batter cod fish & chips. Amazing tender & tasty clam cakes, the Stuffies had a fair amount of seafood & spice. The Fisherman's platter is excellent. They certainly don't skimp out- totally enough to share. Very fresh, good crunch, not oily, tender scallops, huge cod. Surprisingly the chicken parm was great. Tender cutlet, tangy sauce. Avoid: clam chowder is like lukewarm watery potato soup. No lobster or richness to the lobster bisque. Steak was sent back- over cooked, no cheddar bacon fondu sauce as the menu said. The ice burg wedge salad lacked pizzaz - dressing was scarce & it was comber some to eat. Service is pleasant. The kitchen has issues. Soups came out after our entrees, dishes did not come out as described on the menu, steak was not cooked med as ordered. Advice: stick to seafood only (except chowder/soup) & you should be right as rain!

Service was horrible! The kitchen does not care about customers. Everything we ask for was a flat out know, even offered to pay more. Had to ask the waiter for everything twice, left dirty plates in front of us. White chowder was just gross!

AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COST. I don't care if you're starving as my wife and I were were when we came for the Matunuck Oyster Bar and it was too packed with a long wait, either go somewhere else far far away or just kill yourself on the spot, but do not eat here. I did not see the kitchen, but I can guarantee that there are three things and only three things in there: a freezer, a microwave, and a big trash can for all the food that comes back.
(1)
Sujatha N.
Worst customer service, food just ok. Would never return. Waited on one hamburger for 40 min, after multiple inquiries it only came out when I insisted manager go back to check kitchen, then it magically appeared within minutes. Meanwhile the rest of our seafood had been ready and was now cold. Staff not at all apologetic. We feel manager should've offered a substitution or money off our bill but this idea seemed foreign to them. Granted hamburger not the best thing to order here but went for team dinner after tournament & not all kids like seafood. If it's on the takeout menu it should be something easily doable. Will never come back. The food is not worth the wait or the rudeness. If i could give zero stars I would.

This is a great restaurant! My friend raved that this place has the best clam cakes ever! They were absolutely delicious and you can certainly see the pieces of clams inside. There are cooked perfectly! Also, we ordered the lobster roll which I thought was delicious and it was not drenched in mayo, which is good! My friend thought the portion size was a little small but to me it made it easy to eat! We also got the fish tacos and they were delicious! This place also does 2 entrees and a bottle of wine for $39 which is a great deal! Only negative was that they weren't able to make me a cappuccino as they ran out, but I easily had a coffee instead. Service was good and a view by the water is great too! I'll certainly be coming back!

Ordered chowder and clam cakes! Became sad with my first taste of the chowder! Why would you serve spoiled chowder? We are right on the ocean ! I will never be back here in fear of food poisoning!

Very disappointing today. Service was poor from the get go, and when my fish n chips was soggy and undercooked the response was a literal shoulder shrug and "sorry about that" with no attempt at compensation. We will not be back - would rather spend the time waiting across the street at Matunuck Oyster Bar.

My boyfriend and I were thoroughly unimpressed with eating here. The two biggest complaints were that our waiter was miserable, not knowledgable about the menu, and not very attentive (the couple behind us wasn't addressed for almost 20 minutes and had to ask for a server!) and the food was extremely sub par. We ordered calamari which was bland, shrimp scampi which was way too loaded with wine, and shrimp Alfredo which tasted like boxed Alfredo sauce. Portions were also quite small for entrees that were $16-18. The only good thing we ate here was the clam chowder. We sat outside and the view was lovely, but that was about it for positive reviews. Many more seafood restaurants that outrank this one in the Ocean State.

This place was great! Service was very fast and courteous, and the food was very tasty! The calamari was cooked well and I did miss the spice but the black olives were a surprisingly good addition. The lobster bisque was creamy with lots of lobster and very big portions. The clam cakes were crispy with good flavor and not greasy and tasteless as they can be in other places. The lobster roll was cold which I didn't like as much, but it was not drenched in mayonnaise and had great chunks of very good lobster. The fish and chips were huge and nice and crispy, the New England boil was delicious! Nice wine selection too!

Great oysters! Mussels and lobster bacon mac n'cheese were perfectly portioned. Service was a little bit slower but not unexpected knowing it was Memorial Day Weekend and you're on the RI shoreline. Relax, slow down, and enjoy this nice place.

Stopped in after a long day on the water. It was my first time here and being a "beach restaurant" I had low expectations. I was however pleasantly surprised! The wait staff was very attentive. Our waiter Josh was great. I had the pub burger which I ordered well done and it was still juicy. Not dry at all. We also had an order of fish & chips which were light & fluffy, cooked to perfection. The atmosphere was a bit loud, but we were here at the peak time of day. Great location and parking was easier than any of the nearby resturants. I will definitely come back when I am in East Matunick again.

I am never ever ever going back to this place again! My husband hated his fried shrimp! They simply had no taste, they were chewy, and left a bad taste in his mouth. I told him to send them back but he just left them there. I had the fried seafood feast.... It was no feast. I've had better in Philly! It was a pile of bland fried frozen Mrs. Paul's! We wasted a lot of money that night

My son and I stopped here for a quick snack and a Narragansett Shandy on tap. He order a Lobster Bisque and I chose a RI Chowda. My Chowda was okay, not great and my son liked his bisque, it too was okay but we both agreed we have had better. The view from the new Pub and Raw Bar is great, just what you would expect from a side restaurant. Sitting next to me was a lady who had graduated Johnson and Wales and was the current Pastry Chef at the Cap'n's and had worked there for 35 years. We chatted about the biz for sometime until her break was over and she had to return to the kitchen. She stopped us in the parking lot and gave us a fancy creme cheese cupcake and large peanut butter brownie cookie. Folks for know other reason, stop by and pick up dessert at the separate takeout area, you will experience exceptionally flavored, wonderfully creative and not overly sweet desserts...this lady knows her business!!!

We dined in the bar area on a Sunday afternoon. It was a great lunch. I had the Thai Seafood which at first I thought it was a bit small for a main dish but it filled me up. The lobster bisque was very creamy and tasty although I didn't not see any lobster chunks as I normally prefer (but then again maybe my daughter ate it all). My mother had the lobster cocktail and she enjoyed every bite. My honey had the sunday special of 1 lb of wings and a glass of beer (some specific one) and the Oyster Sampler special of the day. Overall we had great service for Sunday football afternoon (2 pm) and the crowd was welcoming and not loud... Can you believe it?!! (we had lunch with our 4 year old). This was our first time here.

I wouldn't Yelp unless it was absolutely necessary. Had clam cakes and white chowder. As a Rhode Islander, I except much more when it comes to clam cakes and chowder. As you know, when they are done right they can be downright heavenly. The clam cakes here were tasteless, dry and very small. The chowder was also bland and not a thick consistency. It wasn't even all the same consistency, really. I though there might be something wrong with it. Expensive and disappointing. I wish I had chosen a better place to cap off a gorgeous beach day.

we are from out of town and tried to eat across the street but it was of course way too packed. We drove by Cap'n Jack's and were not too excited by looking at the outside. I did a quick google search and saw it got decent reviews, so we took a chance and went. Boy are we glad we did. We lucked out and got a place on the deck (please increase the size of the deck!!! would be so good for business!!!). I didn't know what a clam bake was, so I stupidly ordered a stuffie, plus the fish n chips which came with clam bakes AND chowder. Way too much food but it was all soooooooo good. Boyfriend had a salad and a lobster. Drinks were also very good and large. Waitress was amazing. We couldn't believe our luck finding a place like this. Don't understand how the reviews are so all over the place. Will definitely return next time we are in the area.

I used to love it here...used to. They used to serve the comfort food of the sea. They recently got a new menu. No, wait...let me correct that. They recently cut their menu down by two thirds "due to a new chef"...who ...what? Can't cook? The menu selection is pathetic. We were a party of four. All of our meals were burnt. Frankly, the restaurant had a handful of people so there is no excuse. The clam cakes were flat out doughy, uncooked-in-the-inside, burnt-on-the-outside, clam-less, oily balls of grossness. The whole belly clam roll was a burnt mix of strips, batter-bits, and a couple of whole bellied chewy so-not-worth-the-calories, also burnt clams. The fish and chips were oily, raw battered and the fish smelled fishy-bad. We were just told over and over again that there was a " new chef". Please get the old one back! Pay whatever the demand were! Seriously! Until that happens...for the rest of us...Skip it! Skip it! Skip it!

Had a great dinner out on the back patio. The special was very good and plentiful. Wine serving was generous. The prices were average for fresh seafood. I would go there again. The desserts and ice cream are decadent. Just order something and your taste buds will be pleased. There wasn't a wait like down the street. It was very good.

Had an awesome time. We walked to this restaurant from East Matunuck State Beach (about 1/2 mile). Had beers and salad outside on the patio with a breath taking view. We saw people either clam or oyster digging! Ended with an eclair which was ridiculously huge. Share it with a family... Don't get it for yourself. Don't remember the prices which to me tells me it was reasonably priced! Good eats, amazing view!!

Had lunch. Reasonably priced and large portions of good food. The oysters are good and the specials are the best. Even though it's a seafood restaurant the skirt steak is out of this world.

A tradition in South County, this restaurant overlook nice marshes in East Matunuck. They are known for their clamcakes and fried fish dishes. I ordered a Blackened Salmon Salad. It came with a fat free dressing. It was nice and spicy, a bit too oily for my taste. My BF got the Baked Scrod and he liked it a lot...the fries are nice and crispy. Overall a good meal, but it does come a dosage of oil/grease....

This restaurant has fallen down so hard it's just sad. Despite the flourishing Oyster Matunuck bar next door, where tons of people go and wait for hours, this place is never filled or busy. What does that tell you? I can tell you why- totally old inside and needs refurbishing. It smells damp. The servers don't seem to care unless they think you are a large party and they will be getting a good tip. Menu seemed ok, I heard the son (Chef) was from the CIA and do had brought in some items like butternut squash etc. Chowder was watery and tasteless and cool (blechhh). Clam cakes were large, oily and had 1 - small pieces of clam ins each one. Fish and chips- fish was very "fishy" tasting- something we had no desire to see again.. One had a chicken pesto wrap and it was all dried out chicken and the sauce was dripping everywhere. I opted for a hamburger which was ok, but it's a seafood restaurant. They had odd looking desserts- I finally figured out one was a "lobster shaped " cookie. we went for lunch and got there at noon. There was one other group of 4 there and by the time we left it was 1/3 full. Meanwhile the oyster bar had people backed up for miles. I 've been to the oyster bar a few times and its fresh and clean but pricey. But I expected that from the fresh oysters and clientele. Here they seem to be resting on 20 year old laurels. No marketing, no sales, no personality in the staff. Just another restaurant waiting for tourists, serving them mediocre food and then leaving the state. Ask a local is they go to Cap'n Jacks these days - No - Is usually the answer. I am now one of those people. It's sad because they used to be so good and now they just don't seem to care. Well then I don't care either. I'll just go somewhere else.

What a great restaurant I've been introduced to here in the Matunuck area! I think it was mentioned previously in another review but yes this is right across the way from Matunuck Oyster Bar which is always always packed. It's so packed that it prevents me from actually parking by this restaurant. But hey, I will skip right by this busy place where I may not ever see food and drive right down to this little (not really... actually it's quite big) great restaurant. Now I'm from California and I just recently discovered these things called Clam Cakes? Apparently they're a Rhode Island delicacy. Why is fried dough so awesome? I don't really have an answer to that but I can say that clam cakes are exceptionally mind blowing because there is shellfish all over these balls of heaven Before I get to the main course, you have to make sure you save room for dessert. I'll get to why later! They have all your great fried seafoods here with my favorite being the whole clam bellies. There are also clam strips, fish and chips, butterfly shrimp, etc. They actually taste fresh rather than something they pulled out of the freezer. They have other great non fried dishes that I would have been equally excited to have for dinner but I was looking for something unhealthy that night =) Ok, so what was I talking about earlier? Oh yes, the desserts here are quite spectacular! You would never have guessed that this place had a great bakery as well. You must order their cheesecake! It'll by far be the best cheesecake you've had around. They have 3 flavors that change. We had a white chocolate raspberry cheesecake which was hands down better than cheesecake factory (OMG, did I just say that?!)

I took a party of five to this place and the food was really bad. I am from the Northeast so I have had some of the best seafood available. Everyone was really disappointed. I got the fish and chips which came with clam chowder and crab cakes. It was chunks of potatoes in warm milk with no clams. The crab cakes were like fried greasy dough balls with no crab meat. The fried fish had so much greasy dough batter on it that it was not eatable. The bill was $200.00 and we basically ate nothing. I would strongly suggest trying somewhere else.

Years ago, Captain Jack's was a great restaurant. I went with my daughter after not having eaten there for three years. Perhaps they've improved, I thought. Yikes! First of all, when we walked in, there was an overwhelming smell of Pine Sol, you know the smell of the latrines you remember from summer camp? I should have left then. I ordered the chowder and clamcake combo. My daughter ordered the Rhode Island Style Calamari. My chowder, while decent, was barely warm. My clambakes were cold and heavy. Nary a clam in sight. The calamari was a swamp of oil with pepper rings and olives scattered on top. Wow! How do you screw up calamari? The squid rings were limp and soggy. The texture was not the tender bite of goodness we expected but had a tough, stringy consistency. At that point we decided not to order dinner. So we left after the disappointing appetizers. Warning. The place has nosedived! Don't pull into this parking lot. Instead, across the street you'll find a truly fabulous little gem of place called Matunuck Oyster Bar. There is usually a long wait, but, boy, is it worth it.

The BEST chowdahhhh!!! It's perfectly creamy without being too thick. The lobster salad roll is full of fresh salad and just enough mayo... Yummm!!! A great family place to sit and eat but it fills up quickly!! They also do take out, so you can grab some good eats to go!! Enjoy!

We've been eating here for years as the food here is always good. This weekend, we brought relatives with us from out of state who were dying for a good old fashioned new England seafood dinner. Well. Saturday night the food was not just good, it was phenomenal, best I have ever had in all the years we were eating there, they were definitely on their game that night! Must tries are the lobster bisque, chowder, clam cakes, fish and chips, or broiled scallops. I didn't have the steamers, but my guests who did said they were out of this world. Thank you Captain Jack's for helping us impress our guests!

First off, Im very glad my review will be at the top of this list. Having said that, I use yelp frequently to find great restaurants, but have never as of yet written a review...until now. I finally have a strong enough reason to write a review. I have dined here once before and remember thinking the food was average. Last night my mother and I decided to try it again, as we were going to a play and Matunuck Oyster bar was closed with no power from Irene (keep in mind Captain Jacks was fully operational on massive generators). If you don't know what Matunuck Oyster Bar is, look it up on yelp and compare this review to all the others from there. To have a 5 star AMAZING restaurant with innovative and talented chefs directly across the street from a one-star extremely mediocre restaurant is a shame. Gives a bad name to the area. First course was steamers. I love steamers and always expect the freshest and great preparation when enjoying them in the ocean state. To say they were bland would be an understatement. They do not cook them with any sort of vegetables or other ingredients, which I believe more than commonplace EVERYWHERE else. Second was white New England chowder...which should be hard to mess up...even at a tourist trap of a restaurant like this. The chowder has no white consistency to it. Instead it look like they mixed the clear with the white to make some grainy white tasteless concoction. It was so bad I sent it back for a salad. Third course was their 2 lb boiled lobster. How do you screw up boiling a lobster you ask? Simply undercook it and claim that it is cooked. I didn't even finish it it was so bad (and I have never before let lobster go to waste- a few bites in I actually thought I was going to be sick). My mother felt the same way about her meal (linguine with clam sauce- very sub par). We both agreed that maybe we had to give them the benefit of the doubt with them operating on generators. So on the way out, my mother stops to just leave a note of feedback with the manager and say that we did not enjoy our experience and were hoping that the lack of quality in the food could be attributed to the loss of power. The manager confirmed for us that everything was running as normal and no operations, food preparation, or food quality was affected that evening. He even confirmed for us that they do not cook their steamers in anything! They just plain boil them and put em' in a bowl! SO to conclude, I will never again be dining here and am saddened that a restaurant as frequented as this serves such poor quality and prepared foods as an example of Rhode Island and New England fare; especially to so many out-of-towners. Instead try Matunuck Oyster Bar (directly across the street) or La Scala pizza just a mile away for amazing New York style brick oven pizza.

Great oysters! Mussels and lobster bacon mac n'cheese were perfectly portioned. Service was a little bit slower but not unexpected knowing it was Memorial Day Weekend and you're on the RI shoreline. Relax, slow down, and enjoy this nice place.

Must tries are the lobster bisque, chowder, clam cakes, fish and chips, or broiled scallops. I didn't have the steamers, but my guests who did said they were out of this world. Thank you Captain Jack's for helping us impress our guests!

Myself being very picky about clam chowder, I have to say this place has by far the best chowder in the state.

It's your basic R.I. seafood place, although the deep fat fryer is king here, some of the boiled and broiled dishes are worth trying. I like the bisque here a lot.

(4)Susan V.
The lobster roll, clam chowder and stuffies were great. I have eaten there twice now and would definitely go back.
(4)Wendy F.
In my opinion the food was certainly not fresh and possibly bad. Got the whole bellies and couldn't eat more than two.

Always Great it is a yearly stop every-time we are out this way!!! The clam fritters are a must and the chowder is amazing.

(4)Spike P.
Food and service were very good.Good portions but the price is a bit on the high side.
(4)Kim P.
My husband and I love Captain Jacks. We have eaten there twice and been satisfied both times. He loves the fish and chips. I like their stuffed shrimp. Large portions. Friendly staff. Good selection of desserts. Highly recommend.
(5)Jenn D.
(3)Bg P.
(2)Andrew B.
(5)Lyd M.
(1)Douglas P.

(2)Deborah L.
My family has been coming to Captain Jack's for many, many years. It is a tradition to go at least twice each summer and we all love it. I enjoy sitting outside looking at the marshland while dining......very nice.
(4)Amy D.
The white chowda and clam cakes were just mediocre. Won't be back.
(3)Stan S.
It's your basic R.I. seafood place, although the deep fat fryer is king here, some of the boiled and broiled dishes are worth trying. I like the bisque here a lot.
(4)Kris D.
(3)Meghan H.

!!!!!!!! Horrible!
(1)Carleen D.
Very slow service, no silverware given, appetizers came out with the entree, clam chowder was very watery. The goat cheese for the spinach salad came out after i finished eating it, very poor experience. It's safe to say we will not be back
(1)Jeanne C.
No more kids section, now a nice pub complete with raw bar. Menu has changed also, no more peel and eat :-/ but we still dine here, now order the seafood tower.
(4)Debrin S.
(3)Keri S.
Went in with a group of 11. Everything we ordered was amazing. The steamers were so succulent, the pretzel with crab fondue was amazing. Definitely making this a regular stop!
(5)Paul R.
Service was horrible! The kitchen does not care about customers. Everything we ask for was a flat out know, even offered to pay more. Had to ask the waiter for everything twice, left dirty plates in front of us. White chowder was just gross!
(1)Michael C.
(1)Sujatha N.
(1)Dyanna D.
This is a Great bar with Great staff! The specials and sushi are a great change from the normal. BUT the view of the Marsh makes it even better! This is The SALT MARSH!!!
(4)Altena L.
(5)Sandy R.
Ordered chowder and clam cakes! Became sad with my first taste of the chowder! Why would you serve spoiled chowder? We are right on the ocean ! I will never be back here in fear of food poisoning!
(1)Laura L.
Very disappointing today. Service was poor from the get go, and when my fish n chips was soggy and undercooked the response was a literal shoulder shrug and "sorry about that" with no attempt at compensation. We will not be back - would rather spend the time waiting across the street at Matunuck Oyster Bar.
(1)John C.
If you can't get into the oyster place across the street, keep on driving! This place put the suck in Succotash!
(1)Azure G.
(2)D. H.
(4)Your M.
Great oysters! Mussels and lobster bacon mac n'cheese were perfectly portioned. Service was a little bit slower but not unexpected knowing it was Memorial Day Weekend and you're on the RI shoreline. Relax, slow down, and enjoy this nice place.
(5)Steve V.
(4)Mikki K.
(2)Don P.
(3)Rosa H.
(4)Sally K.
(2)Sarah W.
we are from out of town and tried to eat across the street but it was of course way too packed.
(4)Joie K.
Skip it! Skip it!
(1)Diana S.
(4)Marissa D.
(4)Ryan G.
Had lunch. Reasonably priced and large portions of good food. The oysters are good and the specials are the best. Even though it's a seafood restaurant the skirt steak is out of this world.
(5)Robert S.
(3)Wendy S.
(2)Eric C.

The place across the street was packed. Didnt want to wait so we tried this place. A little on the expensive side but the oysters were fresh and tasty.

Not bad in all respects...good family restaurant.

(1)Ana R.
Baked scrod was tasty, but the desserts stole the show. Try the chocolate chip with cookie dough cupcake!
(3)Rick M.
The Fish sandwich is still good, but the portion was cut down. I also needed two.

This is a Great bar with Great staff! The specials and sushi are a great change from the normal. BUT the view of the Marsh makes it even better! This is The SALT MARSH!!!

(1)Azure G.
(2)Your M.
Great oysters! Mussels and lobster bacon mac n'cheese were perfectly portioned. Service was a little bit slower but not unexpected knowing it was Memorial Day Weekend and you're on the RI shoreline. Relax, slow down, and enjoy this nice place.
(5)Meghan H.

(4)Diana S.
(4)dennis b.

(3)Keri S.
Went in with a group of 11. Everything we ordered was amazing. The steamers were so succulent, the pretzel with crab fondue was amazing. Definitely making this a regular stop!
(5)Steve V.
(4)Mikki K.
(2)Marissa D.
(4)Don P.
(3)Rosa H.
This was our first time here.

we are from out of town and tried to eat across the street but it was of course way too packed.
(4)Joie K.
Skip it! Skip it!

(1)Kara O.
(1)Paul R.
Service was horrible! The kitchen does not care about customers. Everything we ask for was a flat out know, even offered to pay more. Had to ask the waiter for everything twice, left dirty plates in front of us. White chowder was just gross!
(1)Michael C.
(1)Kris D.
(3)John K.
Myself being very picky about clam chowder, I have to say this place has by far the best chowder in the state.
(5)Chris D.
(4)K. L.

The lobster roll, clam chowder and stuffies were great. I have eaten there twice now and would definitely go back.

In my opinion the food was certainly not fresh and possibly bad. Got the whole bellies and couldn't eat more than two.

Always Great it is a yearly stop every-time we are out this way!!! The clam fritters are a must and the chowder is amazing.

It's your basic R.I. seafood place, although the deep fat fryer is king here, some of the boiled and broiled dishes are worth trying. I like the bisque here a lot.

(3)Bree G.
Other than the point that its near the beach there is nothing good about this place. Watery clam chowder bland calamari but the service was good. Place made me sick..should be called captain sh!t jacks instead.
(1)Shaun K.
I've been here twice now and enjoyed it both times. The stuffed fish was amazing and so rich. I also had the chowder which I thought was very good. Both times we had excellent service which is always important to me. The waitress came back several times and always made sure we had plenty to drink.
(5)Holly S.
Salmon..yummy and and just please have dessert......any of them!!
(5)Byron B.
(3)Dan H.
Food was good, but pretty expensive. Basic RI seafood fare.
(4)Spike P.
Food and service were very good.Good portions but the price is a bit on the high side.

My husband and I love Captain Jacks. We have eaten there twice and been satisfied both times. He loves the fish and chips. I like their stuffed shrimp. Large portions. Friendly staff. Good selection of desserts. Highly recommend.

Baked scrod was tasty, but the desserts stole the show. Try the chocolate chip with cookie dough cupcake!

The Fish sandwich is still good, but the portion was cut down. I also needed two.
